”Damn this rock has gotten boring.” Karas groaned as he kicked a stone, hunched over with his hands in the pockets of his black jeans. He had originally come to Kanassa in search of one of the Black Star Dragon Balls, already in possession of one he found back on Kelioux. The intrusion of the half Saiyan Jordan and the battle between the three warriors had set things off course. Jordan further prevented the hybrid and his officer from searching by taking Karas out on some long winded dragon hunt and once more when he picked another fight with the demonic Saiyan for not assisting him on a follow-up mission after the matter of the dragon incident. ”Damned peace loving, no fighting psychic fish people. Not even anything close to decent looking women for a good one night stand. No bars either.” He continued to complain before collapsing onto a large rock. Neither he nor Ahnk had bothered with the Kanassian villages since he had assisted Jordan on his hunt for the dragon thing that was now a jewel in his pocket. The Saiyan Phoenix had even managed to obtain a new ship from an intergalactic auction just the other day but it was virtually useless without a rejuvenation center or some sort of gravitron to help his training. Unfortunately he was too lazy to buy one at the moment. ”Now I understand why hardly anyone comes to this backwater planet. There’s absolutely nothing to do.” ”Ya know boss, we can get back to finding that Dragon Ball then get off this rock.” Ahnk suggested. The alien was still pissed with the fact that he had been virtually destroyed in the battle against Jordan. Still he wanted to prove his power and still he had to be saved by his boss. ”That’s right. I got sidetracked from the real reason we came here.” Karas admitted before removing the radar from his jacket pocket and turned it on. Instantly a dot appeared dead center of the device, this one indicating the Dragon Ball currently possessed by the hybrid while an arrow showed up along the edge. It looked like the Dragon Ball was off in the direction of the Forest of Illusions. Karas had heard the occasional mention of the forest through Jordan’s conversations with his crew and the Saiyan Kamatayan. Karas didn’t care about the Saiyan any more than he cared about Karas, and Karas could tell he didn’t give even a second thought about Karas. ”Looks like we’re heading off into the forest. Guess it’d be smart if we got some more info on the place first.” Karas said while pocketing the radar and turning in the direction of the closest village. A village that just so happened to be a stone’s throw away for the two of them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WC: 470 |

Dirt clouds swirled into the air around Karas’ feet with each step he took towards the temple. Standing in front of him, easily over a millennia old, stood the decaying ruins of a stone temple. The temple had become overgrown with moss and vines all along the front side of the stone structure. From his vantage point Karas could tell there were a few holes in the ceiling of the building as well. ”Well, this is a fine place to hide a Dragon Ball.” Karas mused. FLASH BACK ”So gramps, feel like telling me more about this forest you people have been talking to me about?” Karas asked the Kanassian village elder, Ahnk stood outside the door as a kind of guard while his boss “talked shop” as it were. “Ah yes, The Forest of Illusion.” The elder mused from his fish-like mouth. “Many legends exist about the forest yet none have been proven yet. All that we Kanassians know for sure is that the forest has become a location used to test our superior mental abilities. There is, however, a legend about a mystical object hidden deep within the Forest Temple.” Karas looked at his Dragon Radar that he held in his hand once again. The arrow at the edge of the screen pointed in the direction just behind him. ”Out of curiosity gramps, where is this forest?” Karas asked as he looked up from the device in his hand. “The forest is off in that direction,” The elder pointed past Karas, “There should be an exit from the village that way that will bring you closer to the forest. The temple itself sits in the very center of the forest. But I warn you, if you go and try to find the temple the forest shall test your mind. Rely on your mind’s eye rather than your sense of sight and you shall find your way without problem.” Walking out of the elder’s home Ahnk fell in line behind his boss, listening as he filled him in on what would be happening. ”I’m going off to the Forest of Illusion, the elder said there’s a temple there that houses a hidden mystical object. You’re staying with the ship and keeping communications with me open at all times. If something actually does happen to me then you’re going to come in with blazing guns.” Karas delivered Ahnk’s orders before he could even open his mouth to offer his assistance in the searching of the temple. ”I guess if that’s what you want then I’ve got no grounds to go against your orders Boss.” Ahnk responded, slightly agitated by the fact that he was going to be sitting on the sidelines once again. END FLASH BACK The heavy stone doors swung open as Karas pushed them aside to enter. Inside was virtually pitch black, this just made Karas wonder exactly how long the temple had existed and when the forest began to cast such shadows over it. The hybrid walked along down a corridor, his boots pressing against a heavily dusted carpet decorated like something one would find in a royal palace. Royal reds and golds now faded and ripped from years long since unused. Karas paused and knelt down to inspect the carpet. ”If this place hasn’t even seen a single being in decades why is it so torn up?” He asked nobody in particular while rising back to his full height. Something was off here, the elder had told him most Kanassians and visitors learning the arts of telepathy and telekinesis that entered the forest simply had to find the temple, never enter it. And from as far as he could tell there weren’t any sort of creatures dwelling in the forest. Yeah, something was definitely off as far as this whole thing went. Still the hybrid didn’t falter, he pressed on deeper and deeper into the depths of the ruins. The hybrid’s ears twitched, noises like those of insects scurrying away caught his attention. Something was here indeed. Suddenly he leapt backwards, a large object dropping down from the pitch black ceiling. When the dust that Karas had kicked up settled he saw what was now blocking his path. It was a large spider like creature hanging down from a thread of webbing. It’s back, the side that was facing him, was covered by a bone-like substance with appearance of a skull. Karas didn’t even bat an eyelid as he charged forward, his fist shooting out to make contact with the center of the skull. The spider sung backwards, not even a tiny crack forming on the area where Karas had struck it, then it swung forward. The skull struck Karas head-on and knocked him back onto his ass. ”Damnit, a rookie move. I shouldn’t have let my guard down.” Still Karas didn’t know what this spider’s skull was made of. Even the strongest bones broke under the force of his punches. Karas got an idea, perhaps if his punches wouldn’t work then maybe he could shatter the spider’s shield with one of his famous earth-shattering heel-drops. But the issue now was that the spider was still hanging by its thread. The ring on Karas’ right ring finger lit up in orange flames, flames that were injected into the orange box on his belt. In one instant his hand was empty but the next he was holding the blade of the legendary Saiyan hero, soft orange flames illuminated the blade like most of his stored box weapons did. Karas released the grip on his blade, his mind allowing it to float freely in the air in front of him. Using his newly acquired telekinesis Karas made his sword float over to the web suspending the spider and cut it. The spider hit the ground with a cluster of dirt and dust as Karas’ sword returned to his hand. Leaping into the air Karas lifted his right leg up over his head, bringing it crashing down with him on top of the spider-creature. The kick was probably about as effective as Karas’ punch had been. He didn’t understand, a humanoid’s legs were three times stronger than their arms on average. If his fist could deal the amount of force needed then his foot should have been able to do it with no problem. Leaning over onto its front legs the creature shot another web up to the ceiling and pulled itself back into its previous position as a living wall. ”Nothing is invincible, that’s a natural law of the universe. A simple spider shouldn’t be able to withstand my attacks like this, it’s just not possible. Everything has a weak point.” Karas growled under his breath. He had to step back and look at it logically. If he continued to try to punch or kick the spider’s skull he’d be dealing himself more damage than the creature. ”Wait, the skull. That skull is like a shield and it’s the only section it’s been showing me. That must mean its underside is highly vulnerable. That’s it! I just need to get one good hit in at its belly.” Karas felt accomplished now that he had figured out the solution. Now it would be a simple matter to end it. Jumping forward Karas cut the web allowing the creature to hang once again, kicking forward as it began to fall and pushing its head backwards. The spider hit the ground once again, this time skull side first. Turning his sword over in his hand the flames switched from their soft glow to a blazing and deep orange as he drove it downwards. He had been right, the stomach was exposed and not a single section of it was armored. The tip of his blade entered the creature’s thorax, gravity having taken effect and pushed the blade deeper in. Karas could hear the skull on the other side cracking, apparently it was only so strong on one side and any form of external force from within would cause it to break. Just like it was doing now. The spider burst into a cloud of black smoke, leaving Karas on a single knee and holding his blade against the tapestry on the floor. Rising to stand again the hybrid swept his blade through the air before it turned into a stream of orange flames that re-entered the small storage box on his belt. ”If that’s just in the hallways I can’t wait to see what’s guarding the Dragon Ball.” Karas grinned. Dark forgotten temples, spider creatures with virtually unbreakable bone shields and who knows what else hiding around the next corner, this was all starting to get the hybrid’s blood pumping. His heart was beginning to race at the aspect of something possibly stronger than the creature he had just slain. ”Yeah, this is going to be a fun exploration.” He said to himself with a grin before withdrawing his Dragon Radar once more to see what direction he would need to head in next. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WC: 1,503 TWC: 1,973 |

Karas continued down the same corridor as he had started out on when he entered. The introduction of the spider creature had delayed his progress and put him behind schedule, having originally thought he would be able to make this a simple “get in, get the Dragon Ball and get out” moment. It wasn’t even just the spider it was the fact that the temple was far more spacious on the inside than it had appeared from the exterior. The infinite passageway finally came to a dead end. No other doors decorated the remaining seven walls of the room and the wall behind him slid down and closed his escape route behind him. Karas noticed the lack of tiles or stones or carpet in the room. Now he stood on simple soft dirt. Off towards the center of the room the dirt began to tremble slightly and shift. Soon enough it began to bubble up like a spring of water as something started to rise up from the depths of the soil. A gold and turquoise helmet rusted over in several spots rose first, followed by a skull with glowing red eye sockets and bleached white over time. Up came the shoulders covered by armor matching the helmet connected to a bleached white rib cage and spinal column. The creature continued to rise until it was a full skeleton of bleached white bones with fur lined and rusted gold and turquoise armor along its forearms, lower legs and pelvis. In its right hand it held a dulled, chipped and rusted sword and in its left a rusted and damaged shield matching the rest of its armor. The burning red lights that now acted as the beings eyes homed in on the hybrid warrior. Karas smirked. ”I’m beginning to wonder if this is supposed to be a temple to train or if it’s supposed to be an over-sized haunted house.” He spoke to himself, yet somehow he could feel that the skeletal warrior in front of him understood what he was saying. Karas figured he’d meet the creature in the same form of combat that it rose with and summoned his sword from the orange storage box on his belt. ”Well then, come at me ya Halloween reject.” Karas taunted. The creature didn’t seem to register the insult but still lifted his blade and moved forward. Weapons clashed as Karas and his undead opponent brought their blades through the air, the skeleton striking at Karas and the hybrid swinging to parry the strike. Pressing his blade forward Karas knocked his opponent’s arm up behind his head and created an opening to strike from his foe’s right, Karas did just that but rather than cutting through the ribs and spine of his enemy Karas’ blade ended up slicing through the skeleton’s shield and part of its left arm. The shield clattered against the soil under their feet. With a new opening Karas slashed through his foe’s remaining arm. The sword dropped to the floor just as the shield before it did and now completely offered Karas all the openings he could hope for. Slashing his blade downwards once more Karas sliced the creature’s skull completely in half, the red lights in its eyes dimmed until they were filled with nothing but shadows once again just before each side hit the dirt floor. ”I thought undead warriors were supposed to be unyielding and are actually supposed to be able to put up a good fight.” Karas scoffed while resting his sword across his shoulders. In the center of the room, right in front of him rose an old wooden treasure chest in the same manner as the skeletal warrior had and behind it a portion of the wall directly across from him opened to reveal a wooden door with an old iron handle. Figuring the chest held something that might be a requirement to gain access further into the temple Karas made that his first priority and approached it only to slide his sword through the crack where the lid met the body and used the tip to open the trunk. Karas found the object that had been hidden away inside to be something he wouldn’t consider worth hiding away and guarding with a reanimated skeleton. Reaching in Karas withdrew a simple wooden bow with a few arrows. Karas wondered what he’d do with them; it wasn’t like he didn’t already have his Flame Arrow box weapon. In a flash of red flames Karas’ Flame Arrow was strapped to his arm. ”What the? I didn’t bring this out myself.” In another flash the bow and arrows had vanished from his hand and his Flame Arrow had taken a new form. It literally had become a bow made of bone with the drawstring coated by the red flames that were normally expelled by the blaster. ”Now this I don’t have any problems with.” He smiled as the weapon was returned to its box along with his Hero’s Sword. Even though he had obtained a new way of using one of his weapons that didn’t mean he was any closer to finding the Dragon Ball. At least he wasn’t getting any closer if he continued to sit in an otherwise empty chamber. Having had enough of being in the same old boring room Karas made his way to the door that had appeared when he had beaten the skeletal guardian. The other side of the door led to the same corridor that Karas had arrived through. ”What the hell?” Karas asked himself as he began to walk along the corridor. As the warrior continued he noticed that this corridor was actually warped around, completely flipped upside down the further he walked along it. Sure enough the corridor ended at another door, this one large and golden decorated with various markings. Chained to the door was a large golden lock, a lock that didn’t bother Karas much. No instead he simply ripped the metal from the door and watched as it swung open. ”I’m home!” He called out into the room beyond the door. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WC: 1,018 TWC: 2,991 |

Behind the large golden door was more darkness. ”Darkness again. Didn’t anyone decide to throw a light bulb or two in this place?” Karas groaned as he stepped inside the room. Inside was larger than the previous room but still held the same shape for the most part. Rather than an upturned dirt floor this one was still completely made of stones with a flight of stairs spiraling up to a raised level ringed by a thick rope tied to several spiked posts. Karas climbed the stairs slowly, taking in the paintings on every wall. Each painting was the same, a road leading to a castle under dark skies. ”Someone’s got an unoriginal taste in art.” He commented while approaching the center of the room. Over on the other side of the platform was another opening like the one he had arrived through. Both of the entrances suddenly closed as sets of three spikes rose up from the floor. A tapping sound came from behind the hybrid as well as an animal’s faint breathing. Karas turned to meet the beast face to face, what met him was more than just a beast. A black horse covered in thick black armor stared at him with glowing red eyes. Mounted on the horse’s back was a man, maybe as tall as Karas if not a few inches taller. The rider wore brown leather and black armor around his chest, shoulders and knees. Hiding the man’s face was a skeletal mask with three glowing red eyes and a pair of long and sharp horns. Clutched in the horseman’s right hand was a long lance with one blade on the end pointed behind him and three blades pointed at Karas. “I am the Phantom King and this is my palace. What business do you have with it?” The now named enemy introduced himself. ”My name’s Karas, I’m here looking for a magical item called a Dragon Ball. Hand it over now and I’ll leave you to your business.” Karas told him in a matter-of-fact way, holding his hand open towards the masked rider as if expecting him to simply hand over the object he was looking for. “The legendary jewel you say? Forgive me but that’s not something I can hand over so easily.” The rider lifted his lance to the level of Karas’ throat. “Perhaps I’ll reward you with what you seek if you best me in combat.” ”Heh, that works just fine for me.” Karas smirked before stepping back and drawing his sword and Flame Arrow. Behind the King opened up a portal of darkness, right in front of one of the paintings. The King and his mount seemed to float backwards into it. “Strike me down if you are able to young one.” The Phantom’s voice seemed to travel as he vanished into the portal. As the portal vanished Karas took notice that the Phantom King and his mount were riding off towards the castle in the painting. How the hell was Karas supposed to hit him if he was inside the painting. As the rider vanished into the castle in the painting Karas could only wonder why there was more than one painting if the warrior fought from inside the painting. ”They must be connected.” He muttered under his breath. If he was right then his opponent would be coming out from… ”Right behind me!” He called out as he spun around, bow raised to the picture with another portal swirling in front of it. As soon as Karas saw the red eyes of his foe’s mount his bow launched an arrow of red flames that struck dead-on. The horse whinnied and faded backwards into the portal but its rider was shot forward, lance raised above his head in an attempt to drop it down on his target. Karas deflected the blow with the edge of his blade, slicing through the section of the shaft that connected the blades to the rest of the pole arm. In the same movement he brought his arm with the bow still mounted up and aimed it dead center of his opponent’s chest. The flaming string pulled itself backwards before shooting forward, a large arrow of pure red flames spiraled out and struck its target dead-on. Blood splattered from both the exit and entrance of the wound, Karas’ face was sprinkled with the substance as his beaten foe hell to the floor in front of him. His weapons were stored away once more. “Very well, I see I was wrong to underestimate you. Perhaps my time has passed after all. The relic you seek shall be gifted to you as promised.” The Phantom King chuckled before crumbling into dust. The floor under Karas began to glow as it opened up. In the center rose a pedestal with the Dragon Ball resting on a royal red plush pillow. Karas approached the object while removing his scouter and placing it on his face. ”Job’s done Ahnk, bring the ship to my location and we’ll get off this rock.” Karas said while reaching out and picking up the object he had just battled for. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WC: 857 TWC: 3,848 |
