The feast to celebrate Zorn’s passing of the Grandmaster’s Challenge had concluded, but it was now late in the evening, according to the primitive sand clocks of the Hidden Temple. The feast had been a very gracious one, with a hearty meal and great speech by the Grandmaster himself, giving great praise and his blessing to Zorn in front of the rest of the inhabitants of the Hidden Temple. He was then given the Saljuk Mastery Sash, which was bestowed upon him to signify that he was now a master of the great powers of the mind. It was a great honor for Zorn to be presented with this token of symbolism. He took it with pride and honor, bowing before the Grandmaster and his other peers that showed up to celebrate this great accomplishment. It was the strangest party Zorn had ever been in attendance to, however. Or at least the quietest celebration he had ever attended in his life time. The feast was great and there was much talking going on, but it was all done telepathically. The voices of the Kanassans telepathically were calm and soothing in tone, making it very easy to converse with them. Very different than the tones of audible speaking, but Zorn enjoyed his time as he wore a smile most of the time. But finally, just before midnight, the party wound down and the inhabitants of the Hidden Temple retreated to their dwellings for the night. When Zorn thought it appropriate, he took his leave from the temple and exited through the large front doors, going back out into the Forest of Illusion. He was mentally drained not only from his tasks during the Grandmaster’s Challenge, but also from the party to celebrate, which taxed his telepathic powers. He slowly pressed his fingers to his temples and massaged them to ease the tension while closing his eyes gently. The slow massage helped to ease the aching in his head, but his few moments of rest would quickly come to an end. ”Zorn….I hear that you did extremely well in the Grandmaster’s Challenge. Congratulations! But I must tell you, there is one more thing that you must learn before leaving the Forest of Illusion. It might be a very useful ability that you should not pass up. Please, return to my location so that we may complete your training.” Ru’ketal said telepathically. Zorn rolled his eyes and sighed, as he was already taxed beyond belief and all he wanted to do was sleep. But now it seemed that that would have to wait for a later time. ”Can I catch a nap before we begin,” Zorn asked politely in response to Ru’ketal. ”There is no time, as your future duties are quickly coming to affront. You need to complete your training and be on your way as soon as possible.” Zorn narrowed his eyes in a determined fashion and searched deep in his soul for the motivation he needed to persevere. He then took off running, back in the direction of Ru’ketal’s sanctuary. ”I will be right there, Master.” Zorn sprinted through the Forest of Illusions as fast as he could, he heart beating a hundred miles an hour as he weaved in and out of trees, using his telepathic and telekinetic abilities to guide him through the ever encroaching darkness that presented itself as he got deeper and deeper into the forest. It wouldn’t be long and he would arrive at Ru’ketal’s dwelling and sanctuary which was buried deep inside the Forest of Illusion. His training would commence immediately upon his arrival. ------------------------------------------------- WC=600 TWC=600 |

Zorn wisped his way through the Forest of Illusions, ignoring the mental images that the forest projected on the large bodied Saiyan. These were the images that gave the forest its name in the first place, but Zorn was smart enough and experienced enough to ignore them like they were mere mirages, even if the very real like images were descriptive premonitions of the near future. Zorn had no time to dawdle with them, but rather had to focus on the final chapter of his mental training with Ru’ketal. It was only a matter of time until Zorn reached Ru’ketal’s sanctuary and found the very old Kanassan sitting, waiting on Zorn to arrive, practically in the same spot that Zorn had left him over a day ago. Zorn skidded to a stop, breathing heavily as he put his hands on his knees while heaving deeply in an attempt to catch his breath. All of the mental training had kept the battle hardened Saiyan from continuing his physical training in the manner he previously had before arriving on Kanassa with his friends. But his days of brutally punishing his body had been gone for some time. How he longed for those days to return. ”The time will soon come when you will be able to train your body once more. You will have at least a week long trip to train aboard your ship when the time comes. But for now, you need to focus on your mind. I have one important thing to teach you and this will be very important, as one day you could run into another being that also is equipped with strong mental capabilities that rival your own. While you have become comfortable with allowing access of your mind to my fellow Kanassans as good natured beings, this can lead to a weakness of not protecting your mind as solidly as you should. Now it is time to rectify this habit,” Ru’ketal explained telepathically. Zorn finally caught his breath and nodded in agreement and lowered himself to the ground, folding his legs so they crossed and resting his forearms on the tops of his knees. He stared at his master and concentrated on his deep, dark eyes as they searched Zorn’s soul and mind. What happened next, Zorn was totally unprepared for. A screeching pain shot through Zorn’s skull that twisted his body contorted him as he clenched his head between his large hands. He couldn’t bear the pain as it made his teeth clench. There was nothing he could truly tell that was causing this pain until he snuck a quick peek at Ru’ketal, who still sat calmly but with a slightly menacing grin on his scaly face. Zorn grunted loudly as the pain continued to pulse through his mind and inflict real physical pain upon him. Then it stopped and Zorn was completely resolved of the infliction of pain. ”See how easily someone who is trained in the mental arts can infiltrate your mind and bring agonizing pain upon you? Think about being bogged down by that in battle while your opponent or one of his allies beat you down physically while you are completely paralyzed by a mental attack. That could mean the difference between a win and a loss. Life and death. Let’s begin showing you how to protect yourself from that type of attack.” Zorn nodded his head as he rubbed his sore temples. He felt Ru’ketal enter his head once more, but this time it was in a peaceful sense meant to teach Zorn about the weakness and how to mask it and turn it into a useful defensive tactic. ”We need to teach you how to have a slippery mind, how to have mental attacks slide right off the most important thoughts and memories of your mind so that they cannot be used against you to cause you anguish.” ”Is that what you were doing to me, master? Attacking me using my own memories and thoughts?” Zorn asked. ”Yes, Zorn, I was. But you could not tell because I was doing it so fast that all your memories, thoughts, and my attacks were jumbled into one large lump sum. That is what created the immense pain that you felt. I am probably a little better at this tactic than any of your opponents might be, but if you can defend your mind against me, you can defend your mind against anyone in the universe. I have the utmost confidence in that statement. Now what we need to do is show you how to build a maze in your head that will first slow down your enemy. Focus on your brain as an environment, like you are going to the astral realm,” Ru’ketal instructed. Zorn closed his eyes and focused on his mind, transporting his astral being to his mind. It appeared to him as a large white room with rows and rows of black filing cabinets. Zorn looked around carefully as he saw Ru’ketal, for the first time in a standing position. Even the floor of his mind was white, which he found strange. But Zorn was there to learn. Ru’ketal explained to Zorn that each person’s mind was different. Constructed differently as well as maintained differently. Each person had a different system for maintaining their thoughts and memories, so it would always take some time for an attacker to figure out that system. That would give Zorn, in this instance, the chance to construct a defense around his mind before the attacker could get his attack mounted in a timely fashion. This would allow Zorn the time he needed to be successful against another telepathic being on the battlefield. Ru’ketal showed Zorn several ways to defend himself, from turning out the lights in his mind and leaving his attack in the dark to building walls or locking the drawers of the file cabinets that contained his memories and thoughts. His master also showed him how to disperse his most important thoughts and memories throughout his mind instead of having them all lumped together in one are like most beings did, simply because it was easier to keep tabs on them. But it also worked against them and Zorn could not afford this mistake. The Kanassan master explained that Zorn would have to work hard not only on his physical and mental abilities, but he would also have to go through the hardships of sifting through his memories and working towards not allowing those affect him as much as they do. Zorn knew that would be difficult, especially with the underlying dreams and thoughts that weighed heavily on Zorn’s heart and soul. It would be a long and daunting task in ensuring these thoughts and memories would never be his downfall. Ru’ketal gave Zorn some time to be alone in his mind and rearrange his thoughts and memories in a more efficient way that would allow him to both retain them as easily but keep them away from any opponent that would enter his mind. Zorn worked hard rearranging everything in his mind in a way that he would understand but no one else would. It took finesse and cunning work to do it, but after grueling hours of working hard, Zorn was finally done and had formulated a plan to keep any mental assassin off guard. He slowly opened his eyes and looked at his master who was starring at the young, able bodied Saiyan. ”I am ready, master. I have done everything that you told me to do,” Zorn said softly. ”I shall be the judge of how well you actually got the job done,” Ru’ketal retorted in a hoarse voice. Both of them settled back into their meditative position and closed their eyes, making their ways back into Zorn’s mind. They stood side by side, looking around the inside of Zorn’s mind. It had not changed in appearance one bit, which seemed to disappoint Ru’ketal a little bit, but Zorn grinned fiendishly as he looked into his master’s eyes. Zorn’s whole master plan was to make his mind appear as though it was extremely simple, but underneath the camouflage it was actually very complex. ”Well Zorn, it doesn’t look like you made too many changes, so let’s hope that your methodology behind defending your mind has improved in the time I gave you to work on it. Hopefully your Saiyan pride has not blinded you from the help that I am trying to give you. It would truly be a shame if you let this opportunity go to waste,” Ru’ketal said very skeptically to Zorn. Zorn narrowed his eyes with a bit of anger and rage flaring in his eyes as adrenaline flowed through his veins. ”Would I be here if I was not going to heed your advice, Ru’ketal? Remember who you are talking to…soothsayer. You have read my mind and read my thoughts. You know my past, present, and future better than any other being in the universe, perhaps even better than I know myself. You know my true intentions. How dare you question my pride and work ethic!” Zorn snapped back harshly. Ru’ketal raised his hands slightly with his palms open, indicating that he was half surrendering and half calming the situation. ”Forgive me, Zorn. I did not mean to attack you. I only wish the best for you in your future, otherwise I would not be wasting my time training you. Now, let’s get down to business and test out what exactly you have accomplished in the time that I gave you.” --------------------------------------------------------- WC=1,600 TWC=2,200 |

Ru’ketal began to walk forward towards the numerous lines of black filing cabinets that made up both Zorn’s most important and obscure thoughts and memories throughout his lifetime. Ru’ketal was about to go on an all-out offensive on Zorn’s mind, attacking his most important thoughts and tearing his mind to shreds before his very eyes. It was Zorn’s job to protect his mind and keep Ru’ketal, the Kanassan Master, from wreaking havoc on his brain. Zorn had a game plan, however. One that he hoped would be very useful in warding off his master. As his master turned his back on him, Zorn smiled devilishly as he was ready to unleash his game plan and let his master attempt to work through the various obstacles he would uncork in the coming moments. Just as Ru’ketal was about to step into the rows of the filing cabinets, Zorn unleashed the first obstacle, raising ten foot high walls from the floor that surrounded the black filing cabinets, acting as a barrier from Ru’ketal. ”Good…that’s a start,” Ru’ketal said without turning around. But the task would not be that simple, as Zorn expect, Ru’ketal continued his search trek to break Zorn’s mind once more. His Kanassan Master squatted slightly, hands clasped behind his back and jumped into the air slowly and not explosively. Zorn quickly lifted his hands, swiping them downward quickly, whooshing through the air in front of him. Without any notice otherwise, a huge ceiling that covered the entire area with the erected walls, dropped from the whiteness above and slammed down atop the walls. Ru’ketal was caught off guard by this, as he was slammed harshly in the head by the falling ceiling and shoved back to the ground where he now laid on his back breathing quite heavily. Zorn looked on cautiously, still able to see Ru’ketal who was now on the outside of the walls and ceiling that enclosed the filing cabinets on the inside. Zorn believed that he was holding his own very well, but knew that he had to keep it up. ”How are you, master?” Zorn asked from a distance. Ru’ketal said nothing, but slowly got to his feet and brushed himself off, even though there was no dirt to speak of in Zorn’s mind. It was simply a gesture from the outside world that he had carried over to the astral realm inside Zorn’s head. There were small openings that would still allow Ru’ketal into the room full of filing cabinets containing thoughts and memories. Zorn smiled again, wanting Ru’ketal to test him and test the barriers that were set in front of him. Zorn knew that he was well prepared and would outwit his skillful master, but it would take time for it all to play out. Zorn took to the air, hovering above the enclosed barriers that wrapped around the rows of black filing cabinets. Zorn lifted the roof off of the room that he had created to barricade off the cabinets so that he could watch his master move about. But to ensure that his master could not easily navigate over the walls for the next line of defense, Zorn raised the walls another twenty feet, making them a total of thirty feet in all. Ru’ketal was swiftly making his way towards the first bank of filing cabinets when Zorn extended his arms straight and flattened his palms, readying himself to once again shift the make-up of his mind. Zorn focused sternly on the task at hand and created more walls right in front of his master’s face. Ru’ketal turned slightly to look up at Zorn with a slight glare. ”Walls alone will not hold me for long, Zorn. You had better come up with something better than that, Saiyan,” Ru’ketal yelled out to Zorn floating overhead. Zorn snickered at the thought of his master successfully getting through all the obstacles that he had planned for him. Ru’ketal began to move about the room trying to find another successful route to the filing cabinets containing those millions of thoughts and memories that he could use to torture and disturb Zorn with until his undoing came. As his master moved around from area to area, Zorn was right there to stop him, shifting or lifting more walls into place until the entire area became one giant maze that Master Ru’ketal was trapped in, unable to find a way out or to the filing cabinets. As Zorn watched Ru’ketal wander around aimlessly in the maze forged by Zorn and his skills. Ru’ketal once again shot a glare up at Zorn but then smirked like he knew something Zorn didn’t account for. Ru’ketal lifted both of his arms up and flattened his hands to the wall in front of him, facing the middle of the room where the filing cabinets still stood untouched. Zorn thought that his master was simply trying to use his telekinetic powers to shift the walls himself, but that was clearly not the case based on what Zorn saw next. From the flattened palms of the Kanassan Master, Zorn watched as light blue ki emanated and purged the walls of Zorn’s maze forcefully, blowing through one after the other until it reached the center of the room. Ru’ketal now had a clear path to the black filing cabinets, giving Zorn another shoddy glance as if saying he had been defeated by the more adequate skills of his master. Zorn, with an air of confidence still surrounding him only nodded slightly as he wore a smug grin on his handsomely chiseled face. Zorn watched meticulously as Ru’ketal made his way through the freshly blasted holes in the maze, making haste towards Zorn’s filing cabinets. His Kanassan master believed himself to have won the game, but Zorn had more yet in store for him. Zorn lowered himself down, closer to the ground and the filing cabinets so that he would have a good vantage point for the next round of traps that lay in wait for his testy master. Once Ru’ketal had reached the interior room of Zorn’s mind, he stopped short of the filing cabinets and turned towards the hovering Saiyan. ”It was a good showing, Zorn. But you need more time to refine your skills. Remember that everything that can be done in the real world can be done sevenfold here in the mind. Even a sickly powered Kanassan as myself can power through the walls of a maze like that with very little difficulty,” Ru’ketal said in a victorious tone before turning towards the filing cabinets and taking stride to them, surely to wreak havoc on Zorn’s brain. ”A job well done, my master. But by now I would have defeated my opponent in the real world while he squandered his fighting time trying to crack my skull and defeat me from the inside out,” Zorn responded, still wearing a smug grin on his face as Ru’ketal had no idea what was in order for him. ”How little credit you give the abilities of your opponent. The time we have spent here is not equal to the time we spend outside the body. So your comment is misconstrued, Zorn,” Ru’ketal continued to say as he approached the black filing cabinets. As Ru’ketal confronted the black filing cabinets, Zorn narrowed his eyes slightly, watching Ru’ketal extend his right hand out towards the first drawer of the filing cabinet in front of him. A matter of inches from the filing cabinet handle, blue static ki could be seen in a protective barrier around the filing cabinets. The protective barrier shocked Ru’ketal, quickly enveloping his body and stunning him slightly as it threw him backwards against the wall, where he struck and slid down the wall into a heap of hurt and anguish. Slow to get up, Ru’ketal was. But when he did, he walked directly forward, this time with a telepathic barrier shielding his body. Ru’ketal shot him another glance, shaking his head slightly in disapproval as if saying, “Good try, but not good enough, sonny.” With the newly enveloped barrier protecting him, Ru’ketal was able to break right through Zorn’s static electric barrier and open the first drawer successfully. Taking a file out of the cabinet, the Kanassan master opened it and read it carefully, but with a large grin on his face as he bared his yellowed teeth through his scaly lips. Zorn knew immediately that the file contained nothing but a vague memory that held very little meaning to Zorn and his life, so it could not be used against him. Ru’ketal threw the file to the ground taking several steps back. Looking around at all of the filing cabinets around him, Ru’ketal spread his lengthy arms wide out to his sides, softly closing his eyes to concentrate. Zorn watched on with a serious expression on his face, but there was nothing he could do at the moment, just simply allow Ru’ketal to take his actions and then spring the next defensive trap on him. But at this moment, Zorn was a little perplexed at what was about to happen, but he knew it would be impressive nonetheless. Suddenly, with a loud clanging noise that jarred Zorn’s skeleton, all the drawers of all the black filing cabinets slid wide open, ready to be accessed at any time. Zorn’s jaw dropped open slightly in amazement by the ability of Ru’ketal to open all of the filing cabinets in one shot. The Kanassan Master grinned as he walked back over to the filing cabinets, fully prepared to start sifting through more pertinent information in which he would agonize Zorn with. But the crafty Saiyan was not quite finished yet as he watched Ru’ketal saunter over with a victorious manner. The elder Kanassan was in for big surprise when he reached the filing cabinets expecting to easily go through Zorn’s mind. ---------------------------------------------------------------- WC=1,650 TWC=3,850 |

With a slight puff of white smoke and a flash of light from every drawer of every filing cabinet, an explosion of white confetti was shot into the air, turning Zorn’s mind into a very bland type of snow globe. It was as if it were snowing in Zorn’s mind, as the little flakes of white paper fell and rested in Zorn’s spiky black hair. A smile widened on the Saiyan’s face as he watched the little flakes flutter down to the floor, watching Ru’ketal watch the paper flakes float down in front of him. ”It will take more than a little flare and some paper flakes to distract me from getting into the files, Zorn. Is this all you have for me? Not very impressive, Saiyan. I had higher expectations,” Ru’ketal retorted as he reached into the closest filing cabinet drawer. The expression of Ru’ketal’s face when his hand entered the filing cabinet, was one of utter surprise. He quickly shifted to peer inside the drawer, only to find nothing inside. He slammed the drawer closed and looked in the next one, finding the same result. Nothing. He repeated this action until that whole filing cabinet was found to be empty. Ru’ketal frantically moved from filing cabinet to filing cabinet, searching the drawers but coming up completely empty with every search. Zorn could clearly see the frustration on his master’s face, which gave Zorn a slightly audible chuckle. ”Haha…something the matter, sir?” Zorn asked haughtily. Ru’ketal was frantic and then it looked like he was going to go into a full panic as he snapped his head up to Zorn, his chest heaving heavily. ”Zorn! What have you done?! Did you erase your entire memory?!” Ru’ketal yelled loudly. Zorn couldn’t help himself when his master asked these questions. Even though it was a serious matter, the line of questioning called for a slightly humorous response. ”Who are you? Where are we?” Zorn asked, acting as if he had completely lost his memory. Ru’ketal covered his hands with his large, scaly hands as he shook his head back and forth. Muttering inaudibly under his breath, Ru’ketal could not even look at his student who he clearly thought in an attempt to keep enemies out, had erased his entire memory. Zorn meanwhile, watched overhead, a wide spread smile spanning his cheeks. His muscular body began to shake immensely as laughter was coming over him. He could no longer hold it in. ”Baaaahhhhaaaa! Sorry Ru’ketal! I simply could not resist the chance to make the joke. You left the door wide open, master.” Ru’ketal looked relieved instantly, but his look of worry turned directly to one of anger and seriousness. Zorn noticed and quickly straightened out his smile, shrinking a little at the disapproving look coming from his master. But as soon as Zorn was ready to continue, Ru’ketal disappeared from sight, leaving Zorn’s mind. Zorn quickly cleaned up his mind and returned it to just the black filing cabinets, sitting soundly in their rows as they were before Ru’ketal’s test had commenced. Then Zorn drifted from sight and left his own mind, returning to Ru’ketal’s sanctuary. As his eyes opened, Zorn could see Ru’ketal staring at him tensely, awaiting Zorn’s return to their realm inside the Forest of Illusion. Zorn sat up straight, not showing any weakness, but only pride to the disapproving look coming from his master. Zorn was a Saiyan and no matter how much Ru’ketal would surely lecture him about the joking he displayed, Zorn knew he had passed the test and that was all that really mattered. ”That was a foolish joke to pull, Zorn. Erasing your memory is a very serious issue that could easily happen if you are not in full control of your abilities. It appears that you have caught on very quickly. Very few of my students have ever caught on to the ability to protect their mind as quickly as you and the other Saiyan not too long ago have…” Ru’ketal started. ”….Jorlece….” Zorn mumbled softly. ”…But I am warning you, Zorn. Be extremely cautious and try to stay serious when you are in battle. Small lapses in judgment like the one you just had in joking around about losing your memory. Small little things like that can lead to disaster. Please, Zorn, keep working on your focus. Not only will it make you mentally stronger, but it will make you a better warrior. More focused on the task at hand,” Ru’ketal finished. Zorn nodded understandingly and bowed his head slightly to his Kanassan Master, thanking him for the advice. Ru’ketal nodded his head back in acknowledgement of Zorn. The elderly Kanassan sat still, watching the muscular Saiyan for a moment while Zorn peered back at him, awaiting the next line of training. But with a big grin, Ru’ketal shut his eyes softly. ”Your training is complete, my young friend. You are truly a mentally strong warrior capable of great things. But do not abuse your powers. And remember, your near future holds a very important event that will invariably affect you in some way. You will need your entire wit and a level head while remaining focused on the task at hand. I wish you good luck, young Saiyan.” ”Thank you, Ru’ketal. Your knowledge has been most appreciated and will be used wisely in the future,” Zorn said as he quickly jumped to his feet and stretched his stiff legs after sitting for so long. Zorn turned and began to leave Ru’ketal’s sanctuary when the scratchy voice of the elderly Kanassan caught his attention. Zorn stopped, smiled and turned his head slightly so that he could just barely see the still sitting Kanassan out of the corner of his right eye. ”Before you go, Zorn, would you mind telling me how exactly you defended yourself so well? Where were your thoughts and memories?” Ru’ketal asked. Zorn’s smile grew even bigger. ”It was quite simple. You, along with other opponents I may face in the future, think of the mind as a single plain. But, I figured out that it is not. There was a hiding spot right where no one would think to look. The real files of my thoughts and memories were in their real filing cabinets underneath the false ones that you were looking through and dealing with. But no one thinks to look underneath what is already there. Everything else was just a ruse to keep you off balance and focused on other things, eventually frustrating you into giving up. That simple,” Zorn explained. Ru’ketal smiled widely and nodded, clapping his scaly hands together softly. Zorn turned his head back forward and began his march back towards the entrance of the Forest of Illusions. As he walked into the darkness and away from the light emanating from Ru’ketal’s sanctuary, he could hear the old Kanassan chuckling softly and still clapping. It seemed that Zorn had been able to show his own master something new and to that, Ru’ketal showed his respect by applauding his pupil. Zorn didn’t stop smiling for quite some time. By the time Zorn passed the Hidden Temple and made his way to the hidden entrance of the forest, he was barely walking a comfortable pace. But instead, he drug his now heavy feet as he struggled to keep his eye lids from closing and bringing sleep to his body. It had been days since he had slept with his numerous visits to Ru’ketal and the Grandmaster’s Challenge and proceeding feast. But it had all been completely worth it. Now Zorn was well equipped for whatever challenges presented themselves to him. But first Zorn would need to get back to the Kanassan village and get some much needed rest. As Ru’ketal had foretold the strong willed Saiyan, he would stay on Kanassa until a very important task made its calling for him. Zorn had seen the vision through Ru’ketal’s mind and knew what somewhat of what he would be facing in the future. But his conscious would tell him when it was time to leave. In the meantime, the preparations for departure and physical training would need to commence once he returned to the village and got some rest. He would also need to say goodbye to the people that had welcomed him and gave him refuge during his stay on their planet. There was so much to do in so little time, as Zorn knew not how long he would have until the call came to jump into action. He only knew that it would involve Hoxi and he knew he needed to be ready for anything that would come up in order to keep the love of his life safe and alive. His own life and well-being relied on it greatly. --------------------------------------------------------------- WC=1,468 TWC=5,318 |
