“So…” Said the female Kanassan, turning to face Gohan. “You’re my new student?”

“Yep.”

“My name is—”

“Ja’rel, I know.”
There was a shocked pause.

“How…” Ja’rel began. “How do you know my name?”

“Well, I just knew,” Gohan replied.

‘This one is interesting indeed,’ Ja’rel thought. ‘Most people are unable to read my thoughts!’ Gohan heard this, too, and smiled. He sure as hell wasn’t most people, but whatever. Ja’rel was worried to think how Gohan was able to overpower her mind so easily, but she let it slip.

“Anyway, new student,” she said, slowly smiling. “Today I am going to teach you the way of a telepathic warrior. And first, I shall teach you of the Astral Realm.”

“The Astral Realm?” Gohan smiled. “I know all about that place.” He reached into his pocket, retrieving his sapphire gem. “I can use this to fight people in it.”

“Ah, yes. Telepathy gems. Creations by people who understood psychic power, trying to assist those who didn’t. They only give a simply understanding of the realm, enough to access it temporarily. Yet true psychic beings are able to harness the astral realm’s power without needing a gem.”

“Cool.”

“Cool indeed. Let’s begin.”

Ten minutes later, Gohan sat on the carpeted floor in a meditation position, attempting to enter the Astral Realm.

“How much longer should it take?” He asked.

“There’s no specific amount of time. Skilled people learn to enter the realm at will in a second or less, whereas newer psychics may take an hour just to enter the realm for a few seconds. You, on the other hand, may have some trouble. You just moved now, so whatever progress you had made is rendered nill.”

“Fuck.”

“And again.”

Over the next hour, Gohan proved unable to sit still for more than ten minutes. Ja’rel knew that this wasn’t just due to his saiyan instincts, but as she tapped into his mind and read about his life, she realised why. It was very early in his adventure that Gohan had been taught the power of Instant Transmission.

It had been a technique he literally picked up after finding a scroll containing it on the side of a road once. It was a technique of the planet Yaidrat, and how it had gotten there was unknown. Gohan had used the scroll to learn the technique, becoming able to teleport wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

It was this that was getting in his way now. Where other people would have to spend time entertaining themselves on a ship, Gohan would simply go wherever he wanted immediately, and he was used to constantly being on an adventure. So sitting still, trying not to think and waiting to get into the Astral Realm was a bit beyond him.

“Alright, that’s enough,” Ja’rel said. Gohan immediately stood up. “This isn’t going to get us anywhere.”

“Are you proposing we give up?” Gohan replied, hopeful.

“No.”

“Damn.”

“But instead, I have an alternative way to get into the Astral Realm.”

“And you avoided telling me this beforehand, because…?”

“It’s dangerous.”

“Not a problem.”

“So…” Gohan said, arms folded. “This is the place?”

He and Ja’rel were standing at the edge of a massive lake, full of glowing blue water.

“Yes, Gohan. This is called the Spirit Lake. It is unknown how it is formed, but I use it as an option for those of my students who are unable to enter the Astral Realm through conventional means.”

“How does it work?”

“It’s very simple, in reality. All you do is leap into the lake. It will transport you into the Astral Realm.”

“…What’s the catch?”

“It might kill you.”

“Huh.”

Ja’rel turned to face the fearless half saiyan.

“Seriously, Gohan, I’d like you to think about this before just diving in. Your body won’t understand the sudden transition to the Astral Realm and will stop functioning properly, possibly shutting down. Your mind won’t know what it’s doing and you, unable to comprehend the situation, will visualise the fight with your head as a physical battle. If you win, you will control the realm. If you lose…”

“Right. I won’t lose. I’m sorry, Ja’rel, but I really want to try this,” Gohan said, smiling and approaching the lake. “Seeya.”

“Alright, fine, in you go,” Ja’rel replied.

Without another thought, Gohan shot into the air, blasting upwards with his ki. In seconds he was a hundred metres up in the air, and he cut off his ki, stopping his ascension to suddenly enter freefall.

He fell back towards the water in a diving position. He had done this whole trick show instead of just leaping in because he was like that. He took looking cool over actually being practical. Nevertheless, he shot straight through the water, into the glowing blue below.

Almost as soon as he did so, he lost all of his senses. Everything went black. Three seconds later, Gohan was aware of being conscious. Not in a physical manner, but in his head, as if he was in a lucid dream.

He then realised he was falling again, and below he could see a glowing blue. But nothing but blackness surrounded it. Gohan found that he couldn’t flip himself around to dive in, and so he hit the water feet first.

Well, he had thought it was water. It was instead a small patch of land, a hovering disk of blue in this black abyss.

There was no pain in his landing, as he had somehow been slowed down before hitting the ground. No complaints there.

Gohan walked to the edge of the planet, about a metre in diameter. Cautiously, he put his foot over the edge, moving it under the platform. As his foot was level with the platform, however, another blue circle appeared under it.

Gohan drew his foot back over the small space between the new circle and the original platform, and found that, not only did the circle stay, but the empty area between the two platforms filled in with blue as his foot went over it.

It seemed that, wherever Gohan stood, platform would appear to stop him from falling below. He began to walk, and then run, and found that, as he turned around, there were a trail of blue circles behind him. It seemed that they formed into circles instead of the actual shape of his foot, most likely because circles were easier to stand on.

He also noticed that, even after about thirty seconds of running, he wasn’t even slightly fatigued, whereas surely he would’ve at least needed to take a decent breath after this distance. Wait a second…

Gohan stopped abruptly, standing still on one place. The blue around his feet slowly formed together, making a bigger circle. So this stuff grew if he didn’t move. But the real reason Gohan had stopped was to check his breathing. He tried to breathe through his nose, but nothing happened. He opened his mouth, trying to suck in a big gasp, but still nothing.

There was no air here! How strange. Gohan suddenly realised what was happening. He remembered everything at once. Ja’rel, the lake, the Astral Realm. He had forgotten everything. So this was the Astral Realm?

“So, you made it in?” Said a voice. Gohan turned around to see Ja’rel, hovering in mid-air behind him.

“Yeah, am I still in danger?”

“Nope. Once you’re in, you’re in. And now that your body has experienced the Astral Realm, it should only take you a minute or two to get back in.”

“Wow, this thing really speeds up the training, hey?”

“Yep. I just jumped in, the conventional way, to see how you were doing.”

Ja’rel began to explain to Gohan the ways of the Astral Realm. A gem of telepathy would get you into the realm, and out again, but you would have no command of it. Using your own power to get into the realm meant you were relying yourself, so you could change what you saw.

Gohan hadn’t realised he was in a realm he had controlled, which was why his area of the realm was so basic. He hadn’t made air to breathe, but he hadn’t made it necessary to breathe either, which is why that hadn’t be a problem. The circles forming under his feet had been done by him, a subconscious action to allow himself to explore safely.

“So what’s next?” Gohan asked.

“Now we leave,” Ja’rel replied.

Suddenly, Gohan was back in the physical world, being blasted out of the river and back onto the bank by an unknown force. Ja’rel reappeared beside him in a flash of light.

“Hello.”

Now that he could easily access the Astral Realm, Gohan’s real training began. Every day he and Ja’rel would enter the Astral Realm, and every day she would have a new challenge for him.

Today, it was another fighter. Not a real person, but an image she had produced to fight Gohan. It looked just like him, and they charged each other, trying to read the other’s mind and know their tactics.

They slid across the battlefield like water, attacking each other smoothly without limitations such as gravity. They were constantly searching each other’s minds, looking for a hole in their mental defence instead of physical. And suddenly, there it was!

Gohan saw, in the other Gohan’s mind, an opening. A weakness. His opponent had left his mental guard down. And without hesitation, he stopped the physical fight and took it to a mental level.

The other Gohan realised what was happening and fought back. The two half saiyans were now standing opposite each other, having a fight similar to a ki struggle but with no ki between them. Their minds were locked in the struggle, and Ja’rel watched with anticipation.

She had made the other Gohan physically stronger but mentally weaker than the real one, which would teach the half saiyan that sometimes psychic powers were more important than physical abilities. And finally, Gohan was in. He could sense the other Gohan’s movements, and from there the fight was a joke.

Everything the fake Gohan did, everything he tried, Gohan defended himself effortlessly and returned another attack. This continued until finally, Gohan landed the killing blow. The other Gohan collapsed and vanished, and once again Ja’rel and Gohan left the realm.

Gohan, like most professionals, could now access the realm at will in a second. His training was going shockingly fast because of his time in the lake, and he had no regrets. It was awesome to finally be doing something he wanted to do, not just spending his life protecting the galaxy.

He decided he would spend a while here. He liked this temple a lot. Screw being a hero.
