Kularian gave a grunt as he went over the basic training regimen with Roshi again. Though Kular had been spending much of his training with Kami over the last few weeks, Roshi had asked him to stop by to show some of the new folks that he had how training was supposed to go. Apparently some of the guys he had with him now weren’t exactly the most dedicated, and he wanted Kularian to show them up.

However, while he had been on his way, Kular had heard some rumor of a fellow that used a boxing-like style, and was much more about melee fighting than energy… and that was right up Kular’s style. So he’d left a challenge for him, to seek him out on Roshi’s island if he was up for a sparring match. To be honest, Kular found his spars with Kenpachi to be the most refreshing, as both Sai and Rem tended to move away from him and assault him from energy blasts, whereas Kenpachi fought him straight-up.

“Hm, who’s that?” Roshi asked, and Kularian blinked, turning around to face the opposite way. He felt an energy approaching. “You having Rem or Sai come too?” the old timer asked, and Kular shook his head.

“Nah. Just a possible sparring partner.”

Tony had received his strange missive while training at the gym. It appeared to be a challenge from another puncher who was also a student of Master Roshi, the turtle hermit. Ever since he had put his flyers up all over, he had been meeting some of the most interesting fighters and combatants. The thought of a battle with a fellow boxer filled him with excitement. Hardly pausing to reset the machine he had been using, Tony ran out the door and down the road, following the well-trod path to Roshi’s Island.

The swim passed in no time at all, and soon he was standing on the pristine beach of the small island. Master Roshi was talking to another man. The sense of power coming off of his opponent was palpable, and Tony swallowed in anticipation.

"Hey, Roshi!" Tony yelled, "I'm guessing this is the guy who sent me that challenge? Cool. I'm Tony Driesen. I'm really looking forward to this." He extended his hand to the other man, grinning like a kid in a candy store. This guy looks pretty powerful, he thought, This is going to be fun!

Tony stood there, shaking the water off of him and waiting for the terms of the spar. Whatever they were going to be, this was going to be his first match with a superhuman who was a puncher like him. Tony couldn't wait.

Kularian smirked. “All right, you mooks, gather around!” he called out to the various folks that were gathered about, who Kularian was supposed to be showing how Roshi trained, and to do a good job while there. However, the chance to spar came up, and Kular wasn't about to turn that chance down. As the fellow introduced himself, Kular took a few steps forward, taking the man's hand as he tested the other's strength. 'Not bad. This should be interesting,' Kularian thought to himself as he glanced about the area.

“Well Tony, it's good to meet you. I'm Kularian Arieus, and yeah, I am as well. Most of my sparring partners like to toss ki around and play the damn keep-away game. But from what I hear, you fight like I do, only a bit more civilized,” he smirked, as he leaned over, snatching up a stick from the ground, beginning to draw lines in the dirt. “I know you box, and while I fight with my bare hands too, I'm a little more of a brawler, to be honest,” he spoke, drawing what appeared to be a square. “So we'll sorta hybridize the rules a bit.”

The box was twenty feet on a side, which was about the size professional boxers used, as far as Kular remembered. Stepping out of the box was a disqualification, as it represented the 'ring.' But rather than rounds, they'd just go all out until one of them couldn't fight anymore. “All right, let's get it started; let's see what you can do!” Kular called out, settling into his personal favorite stance.

Tony waited for his opponent to finish the ring, describe the rules, and say the match was beginning. One Kularian said that they could start, it seemed like time slowed down. All Tony could hear was the beating of his heart, and all he could see were the unwavering eyes of his opponent. Whoa, man, he though, Calm it down. This fight is just like all the rest. Breathe in, breathe out. Stay inside, stay low. Remember the opponent’s blind spots, don’t forget to work the jab. Tony’s particular inner fighting voice tended to yell at him like some stereotypical boxing coach from a fight movie, like Lee Long’s Way of the Fist Dragon Flame.

However the interior monologue worked the effect was the same. Tony’s vision straightened out, his hands stopped shaking, and he regained the ability to hear his surroundings. Finally getting his own smile back, Tony slipped into his peek-a-boo stance and decided to try his opponent out.

Stepping in to close the distance, Tony threw a series of one-two’s. A nice, simple combo, the one-two was the backbone of any good boxer’s move set. It began with a left jab and followed with a quick right straight. Basic, but in a good way. Tony would throw a one-two, then weave left. He’d throw another, then weave right. After three sets, he disengaged, gaining some distance. Tony was bouncing on the balls of his feet, and felt the adrenaline rush of boxing filling his veins. This opponent wasn’t going to break down the walls of his gym. This guy wasn’t going to fly around, or try to back flip his way to victory. This was going to be a straight slugfest, with the winner being the one with more stamina.

Tony didn’t know how he compared to his opponent in stamina, but he was going to give it his all. He hadn’t fought a fight to be ashamed of yet, and he wasn’t going to start now.

Kularian smirked as he watched his opponent look a little green under the gills. He didn’t really blame him; answering the fight to a challenge from an opponent you’d never met before wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to do. But Kular was fine with that; he wanted to see what this other brawler could do, as he met so few of them. He let his opponent go first, who bobbed in, guarding his lower jaw with his gloves before he lashed out with a quick set of jabs.

Blinking in surprise, Kular leaned back away from them, the straight nearly striking his nose before Driesen flowed to Kular’s right, launching another set of the quick punches, which, even with Kular’s supposed advantage, nearly struck him again. The weave to his left caught him a bit unexpected though, as he had figured he’d be seeing another right weave, and though he moved out of range of the jab, the right straight caught him in the jaw.

The punch landed, and Kularian gave a nod, rubbing it slowly. “Not bad; you’ve got quite an arm on you. Hey Roshi! Keep an eye on this one!” he called out before he turned his attention back to the fight, before he took his turn, now, darting inward and releasing a single right hook of his own. He didn’t go all out, as he wanted to measure this guy, see what he could do. The most fun of a sparring match was seeing exactly what your opponent could react to. And, given Driesen’s more technical skill, Kular was curious what would come next from the fighter.

Tony couldn't remember the last time he felt satisfied in anything resembling a boxing match. Most superhuman fighters considered boxing a waste of time, and going toe-to-toe with someone insane. They preferred to stay back, firing energy blasts and only getting close when they wanted to throw a quick combo. It was a frustrating style for Tony to face, so he had to learn some of those moves to compensate.

Driesen didn't worry about having to use any of those techniques here, and focused only on the sweet science. The first few combos seemed to surprise Kularian, but didn't do any significant damage. Tony hadn't really expected them to, but it was still a bit of a blow to the ego.

Kularian suddenly closed the distance and fired off a right hook. Tony guessed that this was a ploy to test him, and Tony didn't want to disappoint. Tony stepped in on the punch and raised his left forearm, absorbing a good deal of the force of the blow. While this was going on, he threw two body uppercuts at Kularian's midsection.

That exchange over, Tony thought about what his next move would be. His opponent was fast and powerful, and clearly not afraid of taking a couple blows.

Kularian had seemed to take the body shots without any noticeable damage, but the positioning had changed so now the edge of the ring was behind him. Tony decided that this was an opportunity that had to be taken advantage of to gain a definite edge in the fight.

Stepping inside, even closer to his opponent, Tony began the Dempsey Roll. The roll was a technique where the boxer began to weave his upper body in a figure eight pattern, building up speed and momentum. Then, as momentum was at it's max, the boxer would begin to throw incredibly powerful hooks using the motion of their body to add to the punch's force. The act of rolling made sure that not only was the upper body harder to hit, but that a series of hooks could be thrown that would be, one after another, a metronome effect of attacks.

Like clockwork, Tony began shooting hooks at his opponent's head. Roll, lean, twist, throw. Roll, lean, twist, throw. The rhythm was easy to get into, if you had practiced it.

The Dempsey Roll couldn't be kept up for too long, so Tony stopped after six hooks, breaking off and gaining some distance to catch his breath. Now it was time to see what happened.

Tony stepped forward, to continue his attack. The shots from the Dempsey roll Kularian had taken with excellent chin, but Tony knew that he needed to press any advantage.

Pushing off with his back foot, Tony lunged forward, pushing his body behind a vicious straight. He opened up the channels to his reserves of energy, and felt the rush of ki to his fist. This was the single strongest punch Tony could do, and it was the summation of all of his boxing training. The Blast Punch, the attack that blended physical strength with ki in an explosion of power.

"STOP!" The yell came from Master Roshi. Tony froze, ending the Blast Punch mid-swing. He looked over at Roshi. "What is it?" he said. "Kularian has disqualified himself," the turtle hermit said, "One of his feet slid over the line. This match is over." Tony looked down to double-check.

With a strange silence, the boxer walked out of the ring. He knew that fight hadn't been everything it could have been. Tony leapt into the water without speaking, and began the long swim back to civilization.

(( I'm really sorry, man. Work kicked my ass this week; I haven't really been on the board at all this whole week. We'll have to set up another spar at some point when I'm not getting screwed over. >.>; ))

Kularian watched his opponent going at it with a full steam. He had good reflexes, and that was good. Yet Kularian couldn't help but want to see everything that this man could do. After the hook he'd thrown, he merely waited out his opponent's blows, curious to see what kind of power could come from the man's body. He was strong, Kular had to give him that, but as far as technique went, that would yet to be seen. The hook was blocked, and instantly, Kular felt two strikes hit his sternum; he hadn't seen them coming, honestly.

He took a few steps backward then, and that was when Dreisen began to tuck and weave, building up an amount of momentum. Though Kular wasn't really sure of this purpose, he waited, watching to see what his foe would do. However then the first hook came, catching the man off guard. He realized then, that the force of the weaving was actually amplifying the speed and the power of his blows, something that he hadn't expected, and he took a few steps back under the onslaught.

He blinked then, seeing Dreisen coming at him with a powerful punch, and he was ready to take it when Roshi called for them to stop. Upon hearing the explanation, Kular glanced down and noticed the back half of his foot was indeed outside of the line. When had that happened? He looked up, to see if the other wanted to give it another go, but he could tell that Dreisen was not exactly pleased by this outcome. “Hm. Next time I'll have to pay more attention to my surroundings...” he murmured, a bit shocked he had lost...but appreciative of his foe's style, at the same time.
