Jared sat in the middle of the forest in front of a fire. It was a few hours since they came through here, him and Freed. It had been a long day of training and meditation. The two were ready for rest. Their campsite was similar to that of the typical camper’s. Jared had even set up a tent. He looked around. The darkness was ominous but hardly scared Jared. He stretched his arms and yawned.

“I am so ready for sleep. Tomorrow I want to try and find the Poseidon stone.”

Giving a nod, Freed proceeded to withdraw himself to Jared’s gem of telepathy. After that, Jared doused the flames of his campfire and crawled into the tent. As he slipped into his sleeping bag, Jared thought about his parents on Earth. He was really beginning to miss home. He had even left in the middle of his father’s recovery. That in alone didn’t sit right with him. The K-Pack was also off on mission as directed by Shana. At some point he’d have to keep his promise to Shana and Razor. He’d return to Cactaylisma. Tomorrow was another day. It would present the opportunity he was looking for. This was his final thought before drifting to sleep.

For several hours, peace blanketed Jared’s campsite. This was until a mysterious figure decided to creep around. His strange giggle was the one bit of sound that he did emit. As he crept around the forest, he was drawn to the campsite, sensing Jared’s presence. He peered down on the campsite from a tree branch. His eyes were glowing. Using psychic power, he was able to visibly witness Jared sleeping inside his tent. Again the figure began to giggle as he began to contemplate what he would do. He jumped down to the campsite and edged closer to the tent. As he was doing so, his senses caught onto the force of something else. With his eyes he could see it, the glow of something small that lay next to Jared, the gem of telepathy.

Inside the astral realm sat Freed. As a spirit, sleep was not something he needed. Again he contemplated on his known memories. This time he was focused on Aurkus. As far as he could tell, all of his memories of Aurkus dealt with some sort of battle on the planet of Avalon. Frustrated with that being all he could recall, the spirit opened his eyes.

It’s no good. I know I lost the battle and ended up like this, but I still know nothing about how or why it started in the first place.

Suddenly Freed got the feeling he was being watched and turned. In his presence was a young looking alien creature with glowing blue eyes. Freed was astounded. The figure’s giggle filled his ears just then.

What are you doing?

The alien figure’s eyes began to glow even brighter just before a loud scream from Freed filled the area.

Mind Games! The Challenge to release Freed

Jared was sound asleep. In this state, he was unaware of the confrontation that Freed was dealing with. While he slept, he didn’t notice the vibrant glowing of the gem of telepathy beside him. When it started to glow brighter, the boy rolled over noticing the increase in brightness. He could barely see when he did.

“What’s going on!?” he went.

The light overtook him and he could feel his body being lifted as he sat unable to see. When he was able to see again he saw a familiar stairway. The gem of telepathy had placed him inside of Freed’s mind. He was at the bottom of the stairway.

“This is Freed’s…”

JARED!

Jared was alarmed to hear Freed’s scream and turned. To his horror, Jared found Freed trapped in some sort blue energy ball. Jared raced to him.

“Freed!”

Jared, I’m trapped!

“How did this happen?” Jared asked.

Jared punched the energy ball. It rippled and then sent a backlash shock into Jared’s body. The boy was forced back onto the ground sharply and fell. Freed scowled as he pressed against the wall. Jared sat up.

“Damn! I can’t break it! How did this happen?”

As Jared was asking this, someone appeared to him from behind. Sitting up he turned his head back.

I believe you can thank me for that.

Jared stood up and scowled in the face of his new adversary.

“Who are you!? What did you do to him?”

The alien giggled again. His eyes glowed causing the energy ball Freed was trapped in to start glowing. Jared turned around. He could hear Freed grunting in pain.

“What are you doing to him!? Stop it!”

The energy ball containing Freed grew brighter and then eventually vanished.

“FREED!”

He turned around to see the alien had vanished as well.

“Come back here! Give me back my friend!”

Jared bolted for the stairs and began climbing. There was no place else to go but up either way.

Freed, wait for me! I’m coming to save you!

As he climbed the steep stairs, Jared had his glance upward to see where he was going. He climbed two flights before coming to a barrier.

“What!? No!” he shouted as he punched the barrier.

“Open up! Damn it! Open up!”

He heard a giggling behind him and turned. The alien that appeared before had reappeared.

You won’t open it that way I’m afraid.

“Bastard, give me back my friend! Where is he?”

The alien giggled again. He’s safe. But I’m afraid in order to make your way to him you’ll have to use more than your force!

“I’ll show you! HAAAAAH!”

Jared lunged at the alien with a weighted straight punch. He passed right through the alien and slammed the wall instead. He fell backwards. The alien was amused by Jared’s failure. Jared stood up with anger visible on his face.

I’ll let you make it to your friend and release him. But as I said it will take more than your brute force. This barrier will only break when you answer the puzzle I will place in front of you.

“Puzzle?”

Jared…

“Freed! Where are you?”

Jared, listen to me. This young man is a telepath. The barriers were placed here by him. You’ll need to break them by solving his puzzles. It is the only way.

Jared was frozen for the moment. Freed sounded ok for the time being. It seemed to be the last time he’d hear from Freed till this was over though. Jared glared at the telepath and settled his growing rage.

“Fine, I’ll make you regret taking Freed by mowing you down in your own twisted game!”

The telepath smiled. He was hoping Jared would accept.

It flies but has no wings. It’s watched often but never seen. It causes fear when short, but boredom when long.

Jared’s eyes widened at the telepath’s words. It was a genuine riddle. Jared looked up the stairs with his mind still focused on saving Freed. But it was still fact that Jared’s physical abilities would not see him through this. So now he had the task of breaking apart the riddle. It was then that the training from the Yaidratian Elder snapped into his mind. Instead of focusing on handling the issue with force, Jared would rely on his training to solve the riddle. Suddenly frustration disappeared from his faced and the boy sat down on the ground to think as the telepath’s riddle echoed through his head.

Think, Jared. Think about the riddle’s inner meaning. It flies but has no wings…

Jared’s mind pondered that first sentence. The telepath waited patiently for Jared to draw a conclusion. He was amused watching Jared attempt it.

Flying without wings. There are several things that can do that. Balloons can do that! Filled with helium they gain the ability to float into the air. Kites maybe? No Kites have to be designed to be aero dynamic and essentially have wings.

Jared’s breathing slowed as he concentrated.

I won’t come to the answer on just that one piece of the riddle. What’s the second part again? Often watched but never seen…

There was silence for a few moments.

’Watch your back.’ That’s a phrase often used. But in a mirror at the right angle you can see that. The air maybe? That almost makes sense! Air can travel without wings thus flying. You can watch air move around trees and stuff but can’t actually see the air itself. But then the last part of the riddle makes no sense. Sure when there is a short supply of air you become fearful of drowning but too much wouldn’t cause boredom.

Jared opened his eyes again looking at the ground. His frustration was growing again.

Ugh! I don’t have time for this!

After that thought, Jared looked as if he’d came to something. He had!

“I got it you little weasel! The answer is Time! Time flies when you’re having fun! Time is often watched especially in a hurry but you can’t actually see it! When time is short you become fearful of it running out! When time runs long you become bored! There’s the answer to your riddle! It’s time!”

The telepath had on a broad smile. The barrier behind Jared was suddenly lifted freeing the way up the stairs.

Very good! Proceed!

Jared hurried up the stairs, knowing Freed was at the top of the stairwell. Three flights further he came across another barrier and was forced to stop once again. The moment he did, the telepath appeared to him once again.

Congratulations on getting passed the first puzzle. But the second is sure to stop you here. Try your luck with this.

Jared shook his head.

I am essential to life itself and can speak without words. I am powerful but cannot always handle the challenge. Within me one can find what it needs, but used too much I can cause disaster.

Jared’s mind began working to break apart the riddle.

There are several things essential to life. Food & water are both number one. But food doesn’t speak to me. Nor does water.

Jared’s mind continued to push.

I am powerful but cannot always handle the challenge. Deep within one can find what it needs but used too much I can cause disaster…

Jared brain was beginning to hurt. A certain detective would have been nice to have around about now. But he was neither here nor there. Jared continued to contemplate. He needed to get this.

Essential to life itself, powerful but cannot always handle the challenge…you can look within to find what’s needed but used too much can cause disaster. Hmm, now that I think about it…there’s one thing I can say fits all that.

“Alright, here’s my answer!”

Jared pressed a hand against his upper right chest.

“My heart has gotten me into quite a bit of trouble at times! All living beings have a heart as it essential to life. The heart is powerful and drives me to take on any challenge but it alone cannot always do the job and when times are toughest I can look inside my heart for strength! But when I allow it to drive all my emotions the results are disastrous!”

The telepath smiled again. The barrier before him came down allowing him the chance to pass.

Onward to your last challenge!

Jared sprinted up the stairs when the telepath vanished again. Feeling the end of the challenge near, Jared picked up the pace. Up three more flights he went. Another laid before him. That’s when he saw it. It was a light shaped like a doorway. Jared rushed up to the top of the stairs. Once he was there he began walking toward the door. As expected it was impregnable and soon the telepath appeared once more.

Through this door lies your friend. The challenge is near its end. Answer this last one and you may have him returned to you.

“Freed, hang on!”

Pronounced as one letter and written with three. Two letters there are but only two within me. I’m double. I’m single. I’m black, blue, and gray. I’m read from both ends and the same either way. What am I?

Jared smirked immediately with that one.

“An eye!”

The telepath was astounded.

How did you get that one so quickly?!

“Pronounced as one letter and written with three. That letter is “I”. But there is a word that sounds exactly the same; eye. There is one other word and letter I can think of that fits the same description; you! But you don’t have two of them within your body ie me! I have two eyes! Single as the sole part of the body responsible for sight, can be black blue and gray depending on genetics. You can read a person through their eyes but they do not change either way. Truth be told the other two were harder than this one.”

The telepath couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. But a deal was a deal. Jared had passed the final challenge.

I will as promised release your friend!

The telepath’s eyes grew wide, glowing as a light started to expand and engulf them both. Covered by this light, Jared went blind. But as soon as he could see again, he found himself back in the tent. He was still sitting within his sleeping bag.

“I’m back! How did…?”

He gasped and looked around. “Freed! Freed are you there?”

Suddenly there came a glow from his gem of telepathy. After that Freed appeared to him once more. Jared gave a relieved sigh.

“Freed, are you ok?”

Thanks to you, I am. That was very impressive, Jared.

Jared shook his head.

“Thanks. But don’t get a big head over it. I only saved you because we need to find the rest of your memories. Next time, you should be more careful about the situations you get yourself into!”

Freed sighed. Just as they were settling, a ray of light pushed through the trees. Noticing it, Jared came out of the tent. It was a ray of sunlight. Dawn had arrived during their endeavor. Looking up through the trees, Jared could see the morning sky. Freed looked up as well. It seemed their telepath visitor had fled. So Jared and Freed looked back to each other.

“I guess we’ll never find out who that guy was.”

Perhaps!

Shrugging, Jared turned back to his tent.

“Let’s pack up and get out of here. We still have to find that stone.”

Freed nodded. Jared began to pack up not realizing off in the distance with a gleam of intrigue in his eyes was the telepath. Silently he watched. It seemed he would be keeping an eye on Jared for now.
