It was a hard and rough time for Makarov, who after decades of searching had finally been reunited with his son Lucius again, yet at a terrible cost, for he had not been prepared for the news which his son Lucius had to tell him. All this made it that Makarov decided to train and exercise again, to strengthen his body and mind for the task ahead of him and for this he needed the help of the Saljuk Order, not to mention the help of his old friend Master Moot, who incidentally would be the man overseeing the old Makarov's training, while at the same time keep an eye on the healing progress of Makarov's son Lucius.

"With these aching muscles of mine," Makarov sighed as he fell onto his bed after a long day of training. "I would be able to sleep for an entire day...may Saljuk bless my training with his infinite wisdom...or something that would at least help."

His eyes closed rapidly, his mind wandering off into the mental shapes of the dreamworlds, a realm fairly the same as those astral realms used for the improvement of battle and exercises. This was the world of dreams.

"Heh," A shrill voice suddenly chuckled, forcing Makarov to awake in the world of dreams. "I see it worked, I entered the world of dreams of an old man."

Makarov was surprised that this was even possible, but why did he hear the voice of some shrill thing. Her looked around, until he saw a thin, little being with a big head and hat, who seemed to be smiling gleefully at the old man.

"I know you Makarov," The little thing said, yet again with the same shrill voice. " I know you want to get stronger very fast, but you didn't forget the strength of the mind did you? No ofcourse you didn't, that's why I'm here, to offer you a chance of becoming both smart and mentally prepared for the new experiences you will have old man."

"I dont get it," Makarov replied rapidly, still quite confused how somebody was even able to enter his own mind, his world of dreams, if this all wasn't an illusion, a figment of his own vivid imagination. "So, what and how is it possible you're here?"

The tiny being could only smile again, winking a few times, before taking off his hat and suddenly, as if it were magic, the little thing had a typerwriter in front of him and a chair it was sitting on.

"Let's see," The little being said while starting to type faster than any secretary could do on a simple keyboard but at light's speed. "Who I am is simple; I'm the great wise man. Why I'm here is simple too, to help you ofcourse, young man. As for how I got inside your mind, that's obviously by telepathy and years and years of training the mind."

Suddenly, he conjured up a big shiny board with questions on it, while at the same time, he started to laugh loudly.

"You see this board?" The tiny being laughed, while in an instant and one single fingersnap, Makarov found himself bonded with rope and tied to a hard metal chair, while he could see himself hanging above a large barrel filled with acid. "There are three riddles on this board, the only thing to survive...is to solve these riddles. Need I tell them to you, old man?"

Makarov tried to watch the riddles, but his position was all except for a comfortable reading position.

"Maybe that's for the best," Makarov said, while figuring out wether or not the little being was stupid or brilliant. "Let's get this over with shall we?"

"Ofcourse, ofcourse, here comes the first riddle," The tiny man said, while flipping a small sheet on the board. "First riddle...What is there when ignored, but when it is mentioned it is not there?"

Makarov all of a sudden started to laugh, irritating the little man to no ends. It seemed Makarov didn't fear the acid, but was amused by something.

"What?" The little man with the big head and hat yelled loudly. "What's so funny."

"The answer," Makarov chuckled and cackled. "I already have the answer of your first childish riddle, it's Silence."

The tiny man with the big head and large hat couldn't think straight after he had been powned by the old man Makarov, but he wasn't going to let his fun be ruined so easily by the old man's sarcasm and cynical remarks.

"You just wait and see, old man," The small being said with a newfound hope and arrogance. He started to gniffle again, his shrill voice penetrating even the best barriers of sarcasm Makarov had made for himself. "I'll just make you think a bit harder with this second question, this second riddle. What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?"

Again it seemed that the tiny being had struck the wrong chord with the old man, as the old man was yet again laughing and screaming of joy. He had yet again found the answer way to soon, disturbing and ruining the tiny being's fun again, while at the same time ridiculing the small man's intelligence yet again.

"That's a simple one," Makarov laughed, while still hanging above a barrel of highly corrosive acid. "That's a towel, since we used it to dry of the water on our skin, but it itself gets wet from absorbing all that water."

His laughter enraged the little fellow with the big head and the large hat, frustrating the guy to no end.

"Yeah...well,fine," The little man said, though this time his rage subsided and he regained his calm somewhat pesky composure again. "Last one is the toughest one, fail to solve the riddle and you'll die, because I'll drop you in that barrel of acid."

"I though you couldn't die in your own dream?" Makarov said a bit worried, this time he had been strucken right in his heart. "You can't kill me in my own dream, can you?"

"I'm always open for suggestions or do you want to try it out, hihi," The little man pestered Makarov, knowing now where to strike in case of emergency. "You can always try to escape...I think, hahaha."

Makarov watched as the tiny specimen with the large head and big hat seemed to be having fun, laughing with its own tasteless jokes, which made the small being look like a seriously deranged madman rather than an intelligent being, as the little thing seemed to portray itself.

"Allright," Makarov sighed deeply, his eyes closing for a moment, preparing himself for something he yet again thought to be a simple and easy riddle. "Let me hear that final riddle of yours, I'm prepared for any of the concequences, but dont test my patience to long, I dont think my position; hanging above this barrel of acid is good for my health and skin...I'm not in the mood for some kind of sunburn...without the sun."

The little man looked at the old man hanging above the barrel of acid and smiled, a creepy smile which irritated Makarov greatly.

"Allright, I will appease your wish, old man," The small being said with that same awkward and creepy smile on its ridiculously large face. "Here it comes: I am weightless, but you can see me. Put me in a bucket, and I'll make it lighter. What am I?"

This time Makarov didn't broke down in laughter, for the small thing was right, the third riddle was indeed more tricky than his other two. The old man really had to use his mind to get to the bottom of that riddle.

His expression showed how deeply he was thinking, considering all the options he had, before even trying to give a decent answer, but everytime he wanted to give an answer, he started rethinking it, doubting his mind over and over again.

"Hmm, this isn't as easy as those two others," Makarov mumbled softly. "This one is tricky indeed."

"I told you," The creepy being said with a loud cackle. "My riddles are always hard to solve...well most of them anyway...I mean some of them...I mean, oh just answer the darn riddle old man, or you will burn in acid."

Makarov was still thinking deeply about the answer to the riddle given to him by the being Xer, the little freak had managed to put the old man in a stalemate, a position in which it was hard to escape from. How was it possible that he was trapped in his own mind, bound to a chair and hanging dangerously above a barrel of acid?

"But, that's it," Makarov sighed softly, hoping he did not get heard by Xer; the annoying and creepy tyiny being that had been pestering him with those riddles from the moment he went to sleep. "ahem, mister Xer?"

The tiny being turned around, stopping his eternal cackle to take a look at his victim.

"What is it old man?" Xer asked, but just as his eyes caught on to Makarov, they widened greatly, for suddenly it seemed that Xer was bound to a chair and hanging above a barrel of acid, while Makarov was just floating in the void like he was doing seconds earlier. "What, how, how is that possible?"

Makarov could only smile and give an occasional chuckle. He walked towards the tiny being and pointed towards the small thing with his index finger.

"You simply made one mistake a bit earlier," The old man said with a pleasant grin on his face. "You said this was my mind, which means, even when you're such a good telepath, I am virtually still in control of what happens here. So I think considering your position, you would really wish that I answer the riddle correctly, haha."

Xer seemed to swallow his pride, but his fear and surprise seemed to remain, as he started to sweat like a boar, hoping that the old man was smarter than he looked, because otherwise it wasn't Makarov but Xer who would have some pain.

"Allright, allright," Xer stuttered, wriggling on his chair, trying to get out of the bonding ropes. "You're smart, please dont make a to hasty answer, I beg you."

Makarov laughed, but not for long, because he knew that he really wanted to solve the riddle, on his own strength and with his own intelligence.

"Hmm," Makarov whispered, while thinking deeply. "This riddle has really dug a hole in my brain, as if I understand the whole picture of the riddle, but not the hole in the middle...oh."

As if he had just gotten an epifany, Makarov started to cheer and shout, dancing and prancing around like a wasted drunk.

"The answer to your riddle, Xer," Makarov laughed loudly. "Is it: a hole?"

The bonding ropes and the acid vanished, forcing the small being to let out a wheezing sigh, as he noticed he was free again and unharmed.

"Yes, yes it is," Xer laughed, a bit more controlled this time, pleased with the result. "When you wake up, you will have forgotten all of this, but you will be smarter and stronger than before...I bid you farewell."

Before Makarov could react, he woke up in his bed, well rested and surprisingly fit compared to the day before.

"What do you know," He yawned. "This little nap of mine did give me a lot of energy."
