Deep within the forest of illusion, a battle was being waged. Rushing clouds of smoke pushed through the tops of the trees where the battle was taking place. Beneath the tree tops were the combatants themselves, a highly aggressive Kanassan and the young upcoming fighter Jared Miruzuki. “Agh!” he shouted as his body was flung through a tree. He hit the ground back first. Quickly he opened his eyes trying to get his senses in order. The Kanassan he was facing projected his mental abilities upon the tree in question, influencing its inevitable fall toward Jared. Jared rolled to the left, got to his feet and then lunged sideways just as the tree slammed down, impacting the dirt. He landed upon the ground again. The Kanassan went on the attack once more, pulling pieces of the bark from the tree up with telekinesis. They were now wood shards. Jared jerked backwards in fear as he saw the floating shards turning toward him. “Take your best shot!” Jared shouted. The Kanassan grinned, “As you wish!” Forcing his hand forward, the warrior unleashed the wood shards toward Jared like flying spikes. Jared prepared himself. Panic was the first thing that came to mind as Freed watched Jared stand firm. Jared, what are you doing? Dodge! Jared drew a staff and began rapidly twirling it in front of him. Shards began running into his staff. The ones that were caught by the staff shattered instantly. Jared winced however when he felt one cut against his right leg and left face cheek. When all the shards had finished being dispensed of, Jared rested his arms and looked toward the Kanassan with a grin. The warrior landed on the ground and stared back. He smirked when he saw blood starting to trickle down Jared’s face cheek from the cut. Jared gave a bit of a scowl the moment he felt the blood slipping down his face. “Well, he can be damaged! Good to know.” the warrior spoke. Jared put on a bit of a defiant smirk. “Stupid jerk actually managed to catch me not once but twice.” Floating over to him, Freed shook his head. Why didn’t you DODGE!!?? Freed went. “Why are you shouting at me?” Not sure. It seemed right for the moment. However, in all seriousness you should have dodged. “Tch! Dodging probably wouldn’t have helped. He used his telekinesis to throw those at me. He could have just used it again to make them home in after me,” said Jared. Suddenly he smirked again. “But it’s exciting. Finally I get to fight a real life battle.” Your training in the astral plain seems to have conditioned your mind for battle. That’s good. The Kanassan warrior was actually someone Jared had found in the forest on his way out to explore the land. Shortly after their meeting, Jared had challenged him to a battle to test the training he’d endured. Jared felt he was in top form at the moment. But since his opponent had managed to have him draw blood, it was not the time to celebrate. “We shouldn’t sit too long. Our adrenaline will settle down. Let’s continue young one.” Jared nodded. He took his stance and was preparing to continue the battle when suddenly black mist started to rise out of the floor around him. The three of them present gasped at this appearing mist. “What is this black stuff?!” Jared shouted. The Kanassan seemed to fear for his life the moment it appeared. “It’s appeared!” he shouted as he took off in the other direction. Jared extended his hand toward the warrior. “HEY WAIT!” Jared, look out! Freed shouted. But it had been too late. The black mist turned into a large wave and swallowed the two of them. The mist soon vanished after that with nothing but the echoing sounds of Jared and Freed’s screaming and an ominous laughter. Enter the Shadow Realm! Duel with the Dark Master Jared and Freed floated in blackness. Jared’s body felt strangely cold suddenly upon entering this place. He regained his senses quickly enough but could see nothing around him. “What…what just happened?” Freed look at his body and could see it being more solid. ’Solid vision…we must be in another astral realm. But how and why?’ “Freed! Pay attention!” Judging from the appearance of my body I’d say we’re in another dimension. That mist brought us here. “Someone wants us here.” Clearly, but I question the purpose. Jared was about to say something when suddenly strong winds started to blow around the pair. Along with the wind was the return of the ominous laughter that gave him more chills. The pair looked back and forth trying to see where the laughter might be coming from. But a voice spoke out to them. “You’re wasting your time! You won’t see me that way!” “Show yourself!” Jared shouted. “Hehehe! In due time. Welcome to your final resting place victims.” So you brought us here! Who are you and where is this? The pair felt their bodies descending rapidly now, putting the pair on edge. All the while the ominous voice continued to laugh. “I couldn’t tell you all that right now! It wouldn’t be fun. I’ll tell you that you’re in the Shadow Realm though. This world is much like the astral plain you have been in, but you’ll soon learn of its quirks. Survive long enough to find me and maybe you’ll have a chance to get out!” The pair felt themselves touch ground. Their world began to spin quickly. It was enough to disorientate someone. They were unable to react as the world around them began to take shape into a forest of dead trees and nightly darkness around them. There was a final rush of wind and the pair was left to fend for themselves just after some final words. “Hope you can survive in your new environment! Hehehehe!” Jared was still in a world of confusion while Freed floated in place with his arms folded gritting his teeth. To him this wreaked of Aurkus’s doing. It was similar magic that placed him trapped within the astral plain to begin with. In the midst of his looking around, Jared spotted something. “Freed, do you have anything against visiting a castle?” he asked. Not really. Why? Freed then turned in the direction Jared was facing. Off in the distance was a giant castle. Jared scowled as he saw the castle. “Because I’m thinking that’s where we should go.” That castle! Our kidnapper could be residing within it. “Exactly! Let’s find him, make him sorry and get out of here.” Freed needed to say nothing more. He agreed heartedly with Jared’s thoughts and began following him through the dead woods toward the path leading to the castle. Words: 1,136 |

All was dark. Not a trace of light could be seen anywhere. And for a while it was silent. But then there was the sound of heavy breathing. The breathing was followed by the rapid sound of heavy footsteps on the ground. Someone was running. Then there was the trace of a figure, one very familiar. It looked like Jared running just then. Suddenly the footsteps stopped. The person fell to their knees and was breathing heavily. "Gotta...keep...going..." came the voice. It was Jared's. "Run all you like. You'll never escape the darkness. Embrace it!" came one from behind. The figure that was Jared would then stand up and face the source of the voice in the dark. Jared's face showed a scowl. Someone was there. He could see that. But he couldn't tell who it was. "Follow...follow me." Suddenly, Jared's scowl would become an expression of entrancing peace. The figure would vanish into the dark and then as it wanted, Jared would follow walking slowly. Then he too would vanish into the darkness. And then... His eyes would open, having that same entranced look about his face. He was laying on the ground. Above him, Freed floated looking about restlessly, staring ahead as if something were there. Jared sat up and looked around. He was entirely confused. Strange...I could have sworn I was running toward a castle. How’d I end up on the ground like this. As he sat there pondering his change in position, he continued looking at Freed. Freed didn’t seem to notice him at first. Bizarre! What was the spirit looking at ahead of him? [You’ve awaken from your sleep, Jared! Jared didn't respond. He just stood there, still staring at Freed in confusion. Freed looked at him with a curious expression. Jared? Suddenly Jared would start to move, standing up again. Freed floated closer to him. Curiosity was plastered upon his face still. Jared, are you ok? Jared didn't answer again. Suddenly Jared lunged up to one of the trees and assumed a crouching position on the branch. His eyes narrowed and Freed suddenly began to become nervous. What are you doing, Jared? Suddenly Jared lunged forward and began crossing the trees at accelerating speed. Freed's face was of sheer disbelief. Jared had just taken off without saying a word. Jared had done this before out of ignorance toward Freed but something felt different about this. Quickly Freed followed after the speedy boy all the while shouting Jared's name again. Jared reached a clearing and jumped from the trees, landing on the ground ignoring Freed still and bolted toward the other side of the clearing. Freed tried to make sense of Jared’s actions. Where was he going? It made no sense. JARED STOP! COME BACK! he shouted. Jared kept going reaching the end of the clearing first. He then stopped and was looking at the trees. Freed was coming up from behind. JARED, WAIT! Freed shouted. He was just reaching Jared when suddenly Jared lunged upward onto the side of a tree, then swung himself into the tree tops by jumping to a branch and exercising some simple gymnastics. Freed couldn't believe what he was seeing. He had to chase after him on the ground. So further into the forest he went. I‘ve never seen Jared act like this before. It's like he's sleep-running! He entered into yet another clearing. There was no sign of Jared anywhere. Freed looked around. All he had was moonlight in the sky. Frustration boiled upon his face as he looked around. ’Damn it! It's too dark here to see him!’ JARED, WHERE ARE YOU!? JAR...WAH! Jared tackled him just then, sending the pair into a roll. Somehow Freed was able to throw him off and went into a crouching stance. Jared landed on his hands and feet easily. Jared what are you doing!? Huh? Freed got a good look at his face just then. Jared had an enraged expression on his face but his eyes were empty. He was in a trance! Jared was in a fighting stance. Freed was completely befuddled. He's in some kind of trance. But what caused it and how do I snap him out of it? Jared wake up! It's me...Freed! This seemed to make Jared even angrier and he lunged at Freed. Freed tried to jump back but Jared took hold of his leg. Freed gasped at the fact Jared was able to physically touch him. Of course! In this dimension Freed was a solid being. It made sense that Jared could touch him then. With both hands on the foot now, Jared threw himself and Freed into a spin, where he let go and sent Freed flying backwards about four feet. Freed went into a back hand spring to get back onto his feet. But Jared was coming. He sent a roundhouse kick toward Freed's chest. Freed was able to block it with his forearms but now he was staring directly into Jared's face. Jared placed a little more force into his current kick, causing a guard break which sent Freed stumbling. Come on Jared! Wake up!! Jared threw his weight into a lunge punch which Freed was able to spin around and avoid. Freed's palms thrust forward into Jared's upper back causing him to stumble while Freed distanced himself. I don't know what to do. Jared's literally trying to beat me like an enemy. As Freed was thinking, Jared would turn just then, looking Freed in the eyes. He seemed to be huffing and puffing. Freed, at first staring at him with the greatest of unease, suddenly took on an aggressive look. I guess there's no way around it. I'm gonna have to fight him seriously and wake him up myself! Alright let's do this! Freed's face expression changed for a brief moment, showing his sleepiness. But if he was going to wake Jared up he couldn't give into it right now. Besides, Jared was coming in rather quickly. Freed was surprised as how swiftly Jared could move. Jared was shifting side to side by jumping as he came in. Freed threw himself into a forward roll while Jared went into a high jump. Jared came down while Freed went up. They got to a point where they directly across from each other in midair. Jared's eyes shifted to Freed at that very moment and it was like a brief pause in the air between them. This was followed by Jared spinning around for a high kick which met nothing but air as Freed arced his body backwards slightly. As he landed, Freed was off balance and staggered back into place while Jared seemed perfectly balanced as he landed into a crouch. This is crazy! He's quicker than me, more agile and I felt he was a bit stronger too. Has his power increased that much with his recent training? Jared rushed again into Freed. He threw another punch which Freed was able to weave around. But Jared's knee shot up into Freed's stomach causing him to curve forward and right into a punch to the face which caused Freed to completely be forced back against a tree. Jared was coming again with a kick ready to be thrust. Freed looked up at the tree branch. Jared's kick came fast and Freed jumped up, bringing his legs above the kick as he grasped the branch with both hands. Then finally both feet thrust directly into Jared's face, causing him to fall backwards. Freed looked at Jared, seeing nothing but a will to fight in his face. Freed's hesitation left him and he looked up at the tree branch. He planted his feet against the side of the tree, held the branch with one hand and used the right hand to slice through it. At the same time he severed the branch, Freed's feet pushed off of the side of the tree so he could jump instead of fall. Jared stepped backwards and avoided a swing of the branch. This is for your own good Jared! GRR! Freed gave a cross slash. Jared dodged it by jumping back. Freed thrust the branch and Jared deflected it with a palm slap. Freed swung again and completely missed. He did it again...missed. He jumped toward Jared who then side stepped him. Finally Freed raised the branch high above his head spinning it as fast as he could. Then turning around he brought it across in such a manner he was able to catch Jared directly on left side of his face with the thick end. Jared took this hit and fell down. Freed stayed there ready to swing the branch again if he needed to. Jared started to sit up, his face in pain. Then suddenly he gave a slight yell of pain. "AGH! My face feels like it was hit with a brick!" Jared shouted. Freed's eyes widened in shock. Jared? Jared looked up and saw Freed with the branch. "You hit me with a branch!? What the heck you do that for??" Freed stared for a moment. Then he just dropped to the floor. Moments after Freed finally explained what had happened. "You're joking right...?" Jared asked. No, I'm not joking! You just up and jumped out of the window like you were possessed. Jared sat down. There was a shocked expression on his face. "I have no idea why I'd do something like that!" he claimed. His face just showed revelation at that moment and looked to Freed. "Wait...I remember having a strange daydream as we were heading toward the castle." Freed looked to him as if to say, "I'm listening." "I was running in this dark void...and someone was telling me I couldn't escape the darkness. Then I turned around..."
"After that I don't know what happened." So somehow that dream was the trigger for your strange behavior. Freed deduced. “Wait didn’t that strange voice say something before it vanished?” Jared asked.
Of course! The properties of this Shadow Realm must have some effect on your mind. Jared we have to get to the castle and find this guy quickly! Jared nodded and started running. The castle was still a distance away even at the speed he was moving. Freed was deeply concerned. Not sure how, but his mind is being influenced by this plain. If he goes into another trance like that again it will severely hinder us. Some time passed and the pair reached another clearing. This time Jared seemed clear headed and was looking around. He stopped at the center of the clearing as Freed came up behind him. Are you ok? “Yeah I am. Now all we have to do is make it to the castle and…UGH!” Suddenly he felt a sensation in his heart and his words stopped cold. Freed turned to Jared once more. Jared? Silence. Jared didn’t respond to him. Not again! Jared! JARED! Jared suddenly turned around. He thrust his hands into Freed, letting out a forceful push of energy, sending the spirit flying backwards. Then he took off into the trees again following the sounds of a voice in his ears. Come to me Jared! Come! Freed sat up again. No! He’s been entranced again. The chase continued with Freed following Jared as best as possible. They quickly reached the edge of the forest. Jared bolted out first and stopped at a long draw bridge. In front of him was the castle. Jared started to take footsteps towards the castle. That’s when Freed appeared. He grabbed Jared by the arm. Jared turned to Freed, having that entranced expression on his face. Freed was shocked then but not half as shocked as he'd become. Jared gave an angry look just before Freed received a punch to the face that threw him backwards and onto the floor. Freed put a finger to his nose only to find blood on his finger. Blood? He drew blood? Is this realm…making me mortal again? He got up quickly and followed Jared into the castle. The moment they did, the draw bridge went up and the doors to the castle shut behind them. Freed turned around and saw they were trapped. Jared seemed to be coming out of his trance at the same time. Freed then noticed a strange symbol on the ground. Jared saw it as well and raised a brow. “Is that…Ugh...what's going on....?" He said. He looked around. The chamber was lit with torches that hung on the wall. The floor was nothing but dirt. Drawn on the dirt was an enlarged version of the Wdjat symbol. He looked at it. What is this symbol? What does it mean? Freed asked. "The Wdjat symbol...but that...!" "Hello my friend..." came a voice. Jared shook his head and looked over to the shadowy opening of a doorway. Someone was there. "It seems you heard my call. Welcome to the shadow realm! I hope you’re ready for your shadow game" Jared had a skeptical expression on his face. "You're joking right? The shadow games are just a myth. They don’t really exist!" He'd answer. The person soon stepped out of the shadows, revealing himself to be a man with a black mask that covered his eyes. He had a black top hat, wearing all black for a jacket pants and shoes. There was a pyramid pendant with the same symbol displayed on the floor. "Not joking at all. Prepare yourself...memory shard hunter Jared!" Jared's eyes widened just then, hearing the man pronounce his name. Just who was this guy? How in the hell does he know my name?? Freed scowled. This man must be…a servant of Aurkus! Jared stood fearless in the face of this new adversary. The man had a grin upon his face as he stepped closer to Jared. Jared began to take a stance. "I'm warning you. Stay back or I'll give you a taste of some Gokou Jr. Fist Fury." The man raised a brow. Jared's body was of course glowing with energy. He was serious. Freed was beside him. Clearly Freed had trust that Jared would not fall victim to mental plague again. Jared, this man must be a servant of Aurkus! "Correct you are, Koaru! I see you and the boy have come a long way." Jared growled. "Who are you? Are you responsible for my transes?" The figure laughed, further pushing Jared's anger. "I can see your eagerness pushing to be compulsive. It was indeed entertaining to observe between you and the spirit." Do you mean to say you've been watching us? "For quite some time. From the moment you reached the Saljuk Temple, eyes were laid upon you. I observed your abilities, learned of your attitude and was thoroughly entertained by your Spiritken which saw you through many of the challenges. But I'm afraid all of that stops here. Aurkus wishes to see you stopped here and now." The figure removed his formal clothing, revealing a black cloak and hood over his thin material pants and shirt. Suddenly the ground within the circle began to rise. They were on a platform. Freed and Jared looked around. The man smiled evilly at them. "We are now being taken to the stage where our battle will begin. Prepare yourself. This time battle will be one not fought with fists but something far more strategic. Observe!" The figure raised his left arm. Jared watched as energy gathered toward the wrist and began to take form. Freed and Jared were not sure what was happening. But what appeared on the man's arm was some sort of attachment to his wrist. It had a flat panel that lined itself parrallel to his arm. He lowered it to his chest and Jared could see something on the hub. It was some sort of display. Jared also saw a holder on the edge and a slot closer to the man's chest upon the hub of the attachment. On the holder there appeared to be...a deck of cards!? "In the spirit of true shadow games we shall engage ourselves in a battle of duel monsters!" Jared's eyes widened in shock. Duel Monsters!? He was actually being challenged to a game of duel monsters! Jared, what is duel monsters? Jared was perplexed. "Back on Earth, Duel Monsters is a game played mostly by people my age and slightly older. It involves cards that simulate creatures and magic. But why a children's card game to settle something like this?" I see! He must lack actual physical strength. Nonetheless, unless we defeat him in his game we may not safely return back to the living realm. Jared, engage him in this duel monsters! "How do you expect me to fight you in a game to which I have none of the tools to play?" Jared asked. "Tch! In this realm you beckon the cards with your mind!" Essentially, his host had told him to create his own deck and panel attachment. "So I can create a duel disk and deck with just will. Fine then! Since you say that I will! Be it in a kids card game or fists of fury, I'll make you wish you never brought us here." Let's go, Jared! Jared and Freed thrust their adjacent arm into the sky. Focus on the deck you wish to create, Jared and it shall come to pass. Freed thought. "All light power, gather to me and create the tools I need to engage this fight." shouted Jared and Freed. As they shouted, the energy light they gathered produced a duel disk. The disk itself had a blue design and folded out to create the play panel on Jared's arm. Jared extended another hand out as power gathered at the center of his palm. The energy created his deck for the battle. "Duel deck, set! Duel Disk set! I'm gonna kick your ass to kingdom come and then you'll send us back." "Then come at me! The shadows hunger for our duel!" This is coming off as a badly written anime plot about now but I'll take it! He's gonna be sorry! Jared thought. He took his stance placing the deck in the holder. There was a digital display on their hubs. It displayed the number 5,000. "Our life will be represented by the number you see now! 5,000! I am Serik, and this is our duel." "Whatever! Game on! Time to get serious." *DUEL!* they shouted. Jared, good luck The stage was set. They were now ready to begin. Both Jared and Serik held a hand of five cards. Freed was set to observe. Serik was first to go. “I’ll take the first move! DRAW!” He shouted as he pulled a card from the top of his deck. Jared couldn’t believe he was doing this. But waited to see what would come of the first turn. With the card he drew now in his hand, Serik took a quick look at it. He gave a sinister smile to Jared. Then Jared got to watch him plant the card onto his panel. “Come, Haste Goblin!” Flames spewed up from the ground as if a gate to hell had opened up. Then Jared watched the goblin rise from the flames and take a position on the battle circle. Freed took note of the number that popped up; 1,200. What does that number mean? “He just summoned a creature. That number represents its stats. It’s in battle position! So it has 1200 points of attack power. If it were not the first turn, he’d be able to attack me with it and subtract 1200 points from my total life.” So by going first, he gives us a sneak peak of his strategy to come. Jared nodded. Serik pointed ahead with two fingers from his right hand. “Battle! Haste Goblin, DIRECT ATTACK!” Jared was shocked and angered. “You’re cheating already! You can’t declare a battle on the first turn of the game!” I may not have played this in a while but I’m not stupid! I still know the rules! He can’t attack with a monster if he starts the game! Serik smirked. “Haste Goblin’s effect allows it to declare a battle in the first turn of the game! Hence the name, Haste Goblin!” “You’re lying!” The goblin was on the move swiftly toward Jared. “If you don’t believe me, let my monster show you. HASTE BURNING!!!” The creature jumped into the air and spewed flames from its own mouth engulfing Jared and Freed at the same time with them. The two felt real heat and from the flames and screamed in pain as the flames hit them. Jared and Freed hit the ground from the blow. The two laid on the ground. Jared was completely terror stricken as his breathing pace heightened. “That…that hit just now…” “You’re in the Shadow Realm! Everything you feel here is real. You lost life points. Time for you to feel something else.” Jared felt a pulsation in his brain. It staggered him from moving. Freed got up. Jared, are you ok? Jared rose to his hands and knees. Freed went to help him up. As he reached his hand out, Freed was shocked to see Jared smack his hand away. Jared looked up at Freed just then. Freed got to see anger. Jared was angrily staring back at Freed in a way he hadn’t stared at him in some time now. “i…didn’t ask for your help! This guy is my opponent! Don’t butt in!” Jared stood up on his feet and turned around, walking toward his place in the circle again. The Goblin had returned to Serik’s side of the field. Freed was shocked. Jared’s behavior… He flashed back to earlier when they were just starting to know each other. It was just like back then. Jared… “Good, you’re back on your feet. It wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying if you keeled over just like that,” said Serik. “That hit was pure luck! I’ll pay it back on my turn,” Jared said. “If you can! For now I’ll lay these down and let you go!” Jared and Freed looked on. Two face down cards appeared at Serik’s feet. Face down? Jared turned to Freed. “Yeah, in this game you can conceal your support cards. Face down horizontal is for the magic and trap cards.” Trap cards? “You’ll see. Watch closely.”
“My turn! Draw!” Jared went as he drew his first card of the game. Of all the absurdity; playing a children’s card game to get outta this place. But I have to win it to get Freed and I out of this place. Jared thought. ’Jared seems to be ok again. But that expression from earlier…could have somehow been connected to when he lost life points?’ “Alright, let’s begin! Magic card – Medallion of the Ice Barrier! Simple card I’m playing now! It lets me add an Ice Barrier monster to my hand.” As he called out the card, he let it be enlarged and displayed in front of him. Then he looked down where the deck was being held. I created this deck with the will of my mind. A card that lets me search the deck helps me see what I have inside of it. Jared reached for the deck and pulled it from the holder. He looked at the deck’s cards until he came across one that suited him. He pulled it from the deck and placed it back, letting the duel disk’s auto-shuffle function shuffle the deck for him. With his new card added to his hand, Jared pulled another from it and horizontally placed it face up on his disk panel. “Defend me, Defender of the Ice Barrier!” Rising out of the ground were large crystals of ice. All blossomed together, they shattered as a fox exerted its power from inside. The tail had icicles seemingly attached to it and around its neck was a elegant band with ice like extensions pointing out of it. The fox creature galloped around once and then took a defensive crouch in front of Jared, displaying the number 1600 for a brief moment. “A defense monster?” went Serik. You placed the creature in defense position, so it’s displaying its defense power? “Right. Since it has higher defense points than Haste Goblin’s attack points, it can’t pass to my life points easily.” You should summon more monsters to make sure! “Well I can only normal summon once per turn. But you have the right idea.” Jared pulled another card from his hand. “Special Summon, Prior of the Ice Barrier!” He laid it horizontally next to his Defender. A thick ice tomb rose out of the ground and shattered apart as a man, appearing to be some sort of a priest or preacher, broke loose skillfully twirling his wand above his head before getting down on one knee and assuming defensive posture. Jared then pointed at his Defender, which was now glowing. “Defender’s effect now activates since I have another Ice Barrier creature on the field! Now monsters you control cannot declare an attack if they’re attack power is higher than Defender’s defense points.” “Heh, I think you’re missing a fundamental piece of information! My Haste Goblin’s attack power is lower than your Defender’s defense points!” He’s right Jared. He can still attack your Prior and disperse of Defender’s ability. Jared’s eyes narrowed. “I prepared for that.” Jared pulled two more cards from his hand and slid them into slots beneath his creatures on the panel. They projected in front of him but behind the monsters themselves. “I play two cards down. Your turn!” Serik smirked. “Your strategy is defense! I’ll shatter it apart.” Freed looked down at the two face down cards on Jared’s side of the field. ’Jared also concealed two cards. Jared said Magic and Trap cards go there. Could Trap cards be cards that trigger against an opponent’s action and give backlash to the opponent?’ Serik pulled a card from his deck. He glanced at it then smiled again. “In return for Haste Goblin’s preemptive strike, I am unable to perform battle on this turn. So I hope your set cards weren’t in anticipation for an attack.” Jared scowled in response. “Still I’ll have you taste more pain! First I’ll open one of my facedown cards. Permanent Trap open! Soul Cannon!” Jared and Freed watched as the left most card on Serik’s field stood up, revealing a card with a red background around the picture. What is that!? “Not just a trap card, but a permanent one! Usually after use you get rid of them but this one stays on the field to be used continuously.” “Soul Cannon is a permanent trap card I can use during the end phase of my turn. It lets me release one monster I have on the field that has not battled. Then half of its attack points bore down on you as damage!” That means he can inflict damage even if he doesn’t battle! “Is this the start of his combo?” Jared asked. “I’m just getting started! Goblin Archer appear!” He shouted as he placed the card down. First a sack of arrows appeared, then out of rising flames came the goblin that would be armed with them. He took a ready stance with his bow in hand as the number 1200 appeared before him for a brief moment. Serik then pointed at his new Goblin. “Goblin Archer’s effect! Once per turn, he can inflict 300 points of damage for each ‘Goblin’ creature I have on the field! There are two goblins on the field, so this effect will deal you 600 points of damage! Go, Archer! Burning Arrow!” The creature was formidable with the bow, flawless in stance and quick with the draw. He launched an arrow quickly into Jared’s chest. The arrow didn’t pierce him as it was not entirely real, but he felt the burning impact and staggered backward. Jared! Again, Jared felt a sharp pulse in his brain. He dropped to his knees. Serik laughed. “How does it feel getting to taste the fury of the goblin’s arrow? Now I’ll set a card and let my Soul Cannon activate. Since neither of my monsters battled I have a choice! Haste Goblin RELEASE!” Jared staggered as he looked up in time to see the creature’s body become a formless piece of energy absorbed into the permanent trap card. Jared and Freed’s eyes widened in horror. “SOUL CANNON FIRE!!!!” JARED! The beam of energy was fired from the card. Jared was frozen in place. The beam of energy crossed the field and hit Jared head on. There was an explosion of energy as Freed was knocked back. He looked up and saw nothing but a dome of white. JARED!! “How’s that eh? This should be fine to continue along! I’ll whittle away your life points slowly just like this and tell Aurkus how beautifully you suffered before you died! HEHEHEHE! HAH HAHAHAHAHAHA!” Jared laid upon the ground motionless. Freed was horrified. Jared! Stand up! JARED! Standing between him now was a floored Jared and his creatures and the increasingly insane Serik that had brought them there. If Jared didn’t stand up, their journey was over. Words: 2,607 / 6,173 |

The advantage was Serik’s as he dealt Jared a combination of harsh blows from just two of his turns. Freed was only able to hope and encourage Jared to keep on. Jared seemed unconscious however. It was not looking good.
“This is coming along nicely. Maybe I’ll just strip you of the shards you’ve collected now and toss your souls out to be at the mercy of the shadows. Aurkus would enjoy that I’m sure! Hah hah hah!” “What are you cackling about?” came Jared’s voice. Serik stopped. Freed staggered. Jared’s body began to show movement. He stood up on one knee, with his arms wresting across it at first. He was facing Freed but had his head down so his hair was covering his face. He looked as if he was breathing heavily. He stood up on his feet once more after a moment. Freed could see one of Jared’s eyes peering onto the spirit. Jared looked weary at first but then turned around again. “If you were a real threat, you’d fight me with your hands. That’s fine if you need a card game to show your strength. I’ll just break you with the same means. My power is transferable and now I know your combo. You just ended your turn.” Jared placed a hand on his deck. His damage combo allows him to inflict damage to me whether he battles or not. Ice can be used for defense but it can also give one hell of an attack! “Here I come, DRAW!” Jared’s back on his feet! Good! He still has a chance. Jared looked at the card he drew. Yes, I drew it! He slapped the card down onto the panel “Come, Dance Princess of the Ice Barrier!” A rushing breeze of cold winds started to spread from the ground as an elegant woman with icy blue hair dressed in fitted winter gear and holding two giant circular tools that resembled snowflakes appeared. She spun gracefully as she raised her right leg and held it out straight. After three spins she stopped and took a graceful pose as the number 1700 appeared momentarily before her. “Dance Princess’s effect; I can reveal any number of ‘ice barrier’ monsters I have in my hand. For each one I show, one of your set magic/trap cards returns to your hand. Hope that set card wasn’t protection. I reveal a card in my hand.” Jared turned a card facing Serik between his fingers. “General Grunard of the Ice Barrier! Now Dance Princess, return his set card! Dancing Ice Hurricane!” Jared sent his dance princess onto the move. He watched as the woman lunged into the air and threw herself into a wild spin. A sharp hurricane wind appeared below the set card belong to Serik. It was sent up into the air still concealed. To that same effect, Serik was forced to return his card back to his hand. “With the set card dispersed of, it’s time for the counter attack. Reveal my face down card, Gift of the Ice Barrier.” Jared allowed the card to face his opponent glowing. “This magic card is simple! It lets me draw a card for each Ice Barrier monster I have on the field. Dance Princess, Defender and Prior make three! So that’s cards one…” he drew a card, “…two…” he drew another, “ and three.” He drew his last card. “Now reveal other face down card!” Jared’s second card revealed itself. Serik was shocked to see it was also not a trap. “You set two magic cards?” “Yeah! I had nothing to defend myself! You’d have actually been better off attacking that last turn! This card is Magic Triangle of the Ice Barrier! By revealing three different Ice barrier monsters in my hand I can destroy one card on the opponent’s side of the field.” Jared’s counter attack is coming! Go Jared! Jared looked to Freed curiously. “Who are you?” What do you mean, Jared? Jared shook his head. “Eh not that it matters anyway.” Jared turned back to Serik. He pulled three cards from his hand and showed them to Serik. “Role call! General Grunard, Royal Knight, & Cryomancer of the Ice Barrier!” The creatures as he called them appeared strategically on the field around Serik’s field. “What’s going on here!?” “I’m winning! Alright, Ice Barrier Triangle on the Goblin Archer now!” Each of the creatures he called fired an energy beam from their right palm. The beams simultaneously hit the Goblin Archer. Jared grinned as he listened to it squeal in agony before dying. “Now there’s more, I get to special summon an Ice Barrier monster after destroying your card! Grunard, front and center!” The ice barrier general took the stage. As he did, the others gave him a bow of respect. The general had the number 2800 appear before him for a moment. “I’m wide open!” Serik shouted. “This is over! My Defender is a tuner! I’ll show you something great! I’m tuning my Level 3 Defender, Level 2 Prior and my level four Princess of the Ice Barrier!” Tuning!? Defender’s jumped into the air becoming a triple gateway of three green rings. Following behind him was the dance princess and the Prior of the Ice Barrier holding hands as they passed through, reducing their forms to what totaled seven bright energy stars. “Summoned arctic winds blow across the land, jingling the ice crystal as the call to the avatar of the winter solstice!” A beam of green energy shot through the gateway, struck the platform and let loose a roar of fury. Freed and Serik watched in shock “SYNCHRO SUMMON! Winter’s Fury, Trishula DRAGON OF THE ICE BARRIER!!” Soaring from the light was a dragon with three heads, glistening like a shining ice crystal in the sky. Its roar sent forth an arctic wind toward Serik as the number 2,700 appeared for a moment. A combined power of 2,800 and 2,700! This is Jared’s victory! “I DON’T BELIEVE THIS!” “Believe it! Trishula, direct attack! TRI-ICE BEAM!” The creature’s furious cry was followed by a forceful charging of energy between its three heads. They sent down an ice beam each and struck down on the terror stricken Serik, knocking him backwards. Next the general was on the move, swiftly crossing the field. “It’s your turn General, Ice Fury Punch!” The General lunged up, spun around, allowing his fist to pick up cold ice energy and momentum. Then it was forced into Serik with all his might and sent him plunging into the wall of the castle terrace. With the final attack struck, the game was ended. Jared took one look at the general and the dragon before him. With a bow he gave his thanks just before they vanished. Freed appeared beside Jared once more. Jared, that was incredible. Jared was about to speak to Freed once more when Serik staggered up before them. The pair was set to continue the struggle. But Serik shook his head. “I see! So that’s your power. Well the worst is yet to come. Aurkus awaits in the shadows for you both.” Serik aimed a palm ahead and used his power to produce a portal. “Go and remember, this was just the beginning!” A weary Jared turned and walked past Freed, heading into the portal. Freed followed after him and the pair vanished inside. Meanwhile, inside the Forest of Illusion, the warrior that Jared was fighting with returned with Ja’rel. “He was swallowed up here.” “Then we must get him out of there. Huh?” The pair was surprised when black energy reappeared in the form of a swirling doorway. The warrior stood in front of Ja’rel to protect her. But what happened next was that Jared and Freed spilled out of the portal onto the ground. Then the black energy disappeared. Immediately the warrior and Ja’rel rushed to Jared’s side to help him up. “Good lord, child, are you alright?” “I haven’t seen anyone return from the shadow realm before! This is amazing.” Jared looked down at his left arm. The duel disk he had was gone. He stood up on his feet and dusted himself off. “Hey. Sorry to worry you. We got interrupted. Now, about that fight! I believe I was winning,” Jared said as he smirked at the warrior. Freed was perplexed by Jared’s attitude. He seemed unaffected by his trip to the shadow realm and wanted to continue as usual. Freed however, was not. He now knew that Aurkus was aware of their presence and their search for the memory shards. This meant that Jared would face him very soon. Freed was heavily concerned with where the wizard was hiding now and when he would appeared to the pair. Words: 1,467 / 7,640 |
