The Dragon of Valhalla
|
The small ancient room was filled with orange firelight. It cast shadows on the wall, embellishing everything and making them obscure. The air with thick with heat and steam from the ancient secret brew that sat in the pot over the flames. Nearby, a young hybrid tossed and turned in his sleep, fighting off terrors. The Kanassan blend was supposed to help calm ones mind and promote peace. Never the less the saiyan suffered fitful sleep, unable to get true rest. He had not told Ja'vei about his inability to put off the demons, yet he was sure she was aware of the fact. He cried out, calling a name that did not seem natural. His chest rumbled and his body cringed. Despite all of his training his mind was still a hurricane of doubt and emotion. It was not entirely his fault though, he was under assault from those that sought to control him and harm him. The ones that claimed to have connection to him. Strega was well aware of the fact that he was still suffering though he had no idea just how evident it was on the outside as well. If he had not been in a remote part of the forest, no one would be able to sleep. He screamed and shot up from bed, grasping his sheets. His body was covered in cold sweat and his chest heaved, trying to gasp as much air as possible. He was thankful for his distance from the rest of the order. If he had to admit to everyone that he had nightmares that kept him up at night he would have felt like a child. He had always had issues with nightmares since he was a boy, but these ones were different. It had always been witnessing the murder of his father, but then it was only occasionally. These dreams were of another time, another place. He could never remember all of it and it never seemed to make sense when he did. Instead of happening on occasion these came to him every night and plagued his dreams. They tore at his sanity to the point that he was sure he had lost his mind. He slowed his breathing and did his best to clear his mind. He laid back down on the bed roll and prayed for sleep without the nightmares. He felt the fatigue pulling at him and drawing him down into sleep again. He was exhausted, from the training and from his lack of good sleep. His eye lids drooped and he felt his eyes roll back. His breathing became deeper and he once again entered the realm of his own personal hell. --------------------------------------- WC: 591 TWC: 591/3700 |

The Dragon of Valhalla

Strega stood in the middle of a clearing in a dark forest. A thick dark fog covered everything. The fog was thicker close to the ground, like something out of a horror movie. He looked around, trying to gain some kind of semblance of where he was. He felt that he had seen the place in his past, but he couldnt remember where from. He walked deeper into the woods, moving slowly so that he could see where he was going. The air was bitter cold and crisp. The only light came from a blood red full moon high in the sky, so big that it seemed to threaten to overtake everything. A thin layer of snow covered the ground in patches, the trees offering some shelter from the weather. No matter how he moved there was never any more or less light. Everything was mired in darkness. Strega's other senses seemed heightened in the silent darkness. He was sure that they were when he heard a small sob, barely audible, come from a tree to his right. He stepped around the tree and saw a young boy sitting in the crook of a trees roots, cuddling against the natural cradle. The boy looked familiar and he was unsure what it was that made him think that. When he noticed Strega the boy flinched away in fear, retreating towards the tree more. "Wh...who are you?" the boy asked. Strega looked him in the eyes and found that he was unable to speak. Strega could feel that he was looking into the eyes of someone that meant something to him. "Get away! Leave me alone!" the boy cried out. Strega stammered and took a step back away from the boy. "You're just like all the rest! You're a bastard! I don't care about you! Get away from me! I don't need your help!" "My help?" Strega thought to himself. His question was answered though when he heard a low growl emanate from behind him. He spun around to see a wolf the size of a horse standing before him. Its eyes were menacing and intelligent. He could tell that this was no ordinary beast. Before he could react it threw its head back and let out a high pitched howl that filled the night with its song. In an instant four more wolves appeared around the clearing, making a semi circle around them and pinning the boy where he was against the tree. The boy! Strega knew that he had to do something to defend him. At the very least he had to draw off the wolves. He readied himself for battle, prepared to die if thats what it took. The center wolf let out a low pitched bark, giving the signal to attack. Strega braces himself for impact with the massive thing, knowing it had to weigh a ton. When it leaped into the air straight for him he brought up a leg and dropped his heel towards its collar bone. He expected to feel the shock of flesh on flesh, but instead his leg whiffed through nothingness. He turned on his heel and saw the beast lunging forward. It had passed right through him as if he didn't exist at all. The beasts closed in on the child and the boy let out a tortured scream. They swarmed around him, all gnashing their teeth and trying to devour him. Strega tried burg there was nothing he could do. He was unable to touch any of them. He was forced to watch and listen as the boy screamed. Suddenly, the screaming reached a peak and with a loud cry a massive pressure forced the beasts away. They flew an amazing distance before coming to a halt where they hit the ground. Strega looked toward the source and saw the boy still cowering in fear. Somehow all he had on him were a few minor scrapes and cuts. He had survive their assault with little to show for it. Strega was amazed that his young child might be able to survive the attack. He had no idea how the hold managed to throw them solar, especially considering each was at least fifteen hundred pounds. But yet they were all in tangled heaps around him. The wolves started to get to their feet, obviously shaken. They approached cautiously, staying back approximately twenty feet each. They seemed to be calculating what had happened and the odds it might happen again. Strega gasped when he saw that they might not be waiting like he thought. Each wolf's mouth and teeth started to glow a bright yellow. They looked toward each other before opening their maws and letting out a loud howl. When their mouths opened a beam of energy Sgt forth, all converging on the boy. The tree he was standing in front of exploded and splintered, sending shrapnel and wood pulp flying in all directions. Strega shouted. There was no way the child would survive that. He could feel the heat ad he power that came from it. But then just as he was certain all hope was lost e sensed a massive power from within the blast. It was an incredible power and climbing rapidly. Slowly he saw something start to rise from the ashes. The blast cleared and there before them floated the boy, although he looked different. His eyes were slits and a pair of feathered black wing protruded from his back. It was obvious the boy was not in control anymore as something darker had taken over. The power was scary strong and the boys eyes held a feral look. The demon child looked between the wolves with a sadistic smile. He raised one hand and splayed his fingers, moving it across their line. After he pointe at each one he turned his palm up and closed his fiat hand, as if crushing something within. The wolves each let out a painful howl before disappearing once more. The boy then turned to Strega, pointing one finger at him and getting another smile. Before he could scream he get himself fade away. ------------------ WC: 1019 TWC: 1616/3700 |

Strega shot up from his sleep for the second time that night. Flashes of his nightmare shot through his head once more. He tried to make sense of it but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't ind an explanation. One thing he was ire of though was that this dream was no dream, and it had happened. There was something about the boy, about the wolves. It all seemed too familiar, as if he had seen it all before. He knew that the dream was not one that had come to him before, it was his first time getting to be privy to this. He was unsure on where it was he would have recognized the scene from, but It seemed so real. He knew that there was no getting back to sleep and sun rise was only a short while off. He stood and made himself decent before stepping into the chilled night air. He took a deep breath and tightened his sash before deciding to take a walk. He walked without thinking, letting his feet take him wherever they would go. He headed deeper into the forest, toward where he had last met with Ja'rel. He wasn't really aware of where it was that he was headed since his mind was so burdened with thoughts of the nightmare he had just experienced. He needed to know what it was that was so familiar about the place and why he felt such a strong connection to that boy. He imagined that all parties involved must have been demons. It would explain the wolves and the childs ability to survive their attacks. But also the boy was not the type of demon he was used to seeing, as if he was unaware that he was a demon as well. Strega came to an abrubt stop and looked up. He found himself in one of the thicker parts of the forest of illusion. A massive tree lay on its side, broken off from the stump. It seemed as if the tree had been felled long ago in some ancient storm. It had grown over with moss and its bark appeared to be petrified with time. It was not so much the tree that drew his attention but the figure that sat upon it. He could recognize the form of Ja'rel, sitting in meditation. The massive size of the tree meant that there was plenty of room for someone to sit and have enough space for a friend. She sat in the middle and her eyes were closed, palms hanging limp. Strega stared for a moment before he heard her voice in his head. "It's rude to stare." Strega averted his eyes immediately, embarassed that he had been caught being rude. "Forgive me Master, I was merely surprised to see you." He responded back with his mind. "All is forgiven. Come child, sit. I can sense that much troubles you." Strega did as he was told, mounting the titanic vegetation by leaping up and landing next to his master. Once he sat he closed his eyes and allowed himself to open his mind. "Now, lets see just what it is that plagues you." He could feel her enter his mind and knew that she had accessed his memory and witnessed his nightmare. "This has been happening for a long time hasnt it?" Strega nodded the affirmative, allowing her to continue. "I see, and yet you still managed to calm your mind and master spirit walking. Impressive. Do not worry all will be answered in time I am sure, things have a way of working themselves out." The master left his memory and returned to the surface. "I had not planned to do this yet but since you are already up and I do not plan to sleep, let us see just how much you have learned." He could sense the enjoyment in her voice and he wondered at what it was that she had planned. Never the less he followed instruction and projected himself onto the astral plane. ------------------------------------ WC: 667 TWC: 2,283/3,700 |

Strega calmed his mind and slowed his breathing. He shut out all outside influences, focusing only on the internal. He could feel the blood flowing through his veins. He could feel every beat of his heart, hear the air filling his lungs. He felt the ki inside of him. He thought about how much it had grown since he first began his journey on Valhalla so long ago. It did not take long or him to find the familiar place that his spirit resided. He let it resonate with him before pushing up and out as he had been taught. He felt his spirit separate and leave his body. In a moment he was looking back at himself sitting next to the Kanassan and looking around at the spirit world. He looked around the spirit realm and realized that Ja'rel was nowhere to be found. He could see where the old crone was meditating so she should have been close but there was no sign of her. Strega wondered if perhaps she were hiding somewhere so that she could ambush him. He was unaware if there was a method of hiding oneself in the spirit realm hit of there was he was sure that she would know it. He started to search the former, moving slowly, always alert. He was sure that something was fishy about the whole situation. It was unlike the master to ask something and then my be there to observe. She had a tendency to ask obscure questions but each time it was intended to teach a lesson. Perhaps this instance was another chance for her to prove a point. Strega continued on through the forest, searching high an low, expecting an attack at any moment. He was determined not to be caught off guard. He would make his master proud and be prepared for anything. What he found though he was not quite ready for. He came upon a grove of trees tightly grown. They seemed to form a natural wall, almost no space between their trunks. One of the trees though had grown in such a way that an archway appeared to allow entrance. The sight gave him a bad feeling and he sensed a strange energy about it. He approach cautiously, not sure what would happen next. He entered the natural building and found that it was almost entirely dark within. The only light was that which managed to make its way through the canopy of leaves above. He looked around to see the room was barely more than an eight foot round cell. In the center laid a young Kanassan woman. At his entrance the woman lifted her head an a look of relief overcame her. Her bright blue eyes looked up into his own darker ones. "Greetings, I am Ja'rel. Pleasure to meet you." ------/---/-------- WC:473 TWC: 2757 |

The Dragon of Valhalla
|
Strega stared at the young alien, trying to make sense of the master's words. She stared at him with innocent eyes that told him she was entirely serious. "Master Ja'rel? It's me Strega." She merely smiled at him. "Greetings Strega, I don't believe we have met before. And why are you calling me Master? I am merely an apprentice. Are you also a member of the order?" There had to be something more to this and he was determined to find out what. "Yes, can I ask why it is you are here?" As soon as the words were out of his mouth he saw the girls demeanor change. She looked around anxiously an fear came to her eyes. She looked back up at him and put a finger up. "Shh, you must not speak of them. They can hear your thoughts!" Strega looked at her quizzically. "Who can hear your....." He trailed off. His sentence was cut short by a low growl outside. Ja'rels eyes shot wide open and she ran to cower against the wall. She curled into the fetal position and started to murmur. "No, I didn't say it. I didn't do anything. I'm a good girl. Please. No." Strega watched the young girl, wondering what had happened to her. Se was so much different than the woman he knew. He snapped his head towards the door, waiting to see if he could find out what he was up against. "There you are," a voice came in his mind. "We've been waiting for you." The voice was mockingly song like. "Come out come out little one. We want to play." The voice menaced. Strega steeled himself, squaring his shoulders and walking out of the cell. When he stepped IBO the light he stopped. Before him stood a wolf just like the one that had been in his nightmare. One by one the other four came and surrounded him. "We'll now, you've grown haven't you. It's been far too long since we last saw you." Strega studied the creatures. Their fur was black as smoke and he coul see that their fangs were far larger than any wolf he had ever seen. Ther eyes were blood red and menacing. Their ears perked up and around, listening to everything. "Who are you?" Strega asked. "If you must call us anything I suppose we would be called the Fangori. But that doesn't matter now that we have found you. We have hunted you for quite some time. You've given us a hard time but that doesn't matter. You will trouble is no more." Suddenly the dream made sense to Strega. The boy had been him. He was their target. They we apart of the nether realms army, assassins. They had sought him out to kill him and now Ja'rel had been dragged into it as well. "We'll jut see about that." Strega said. He launched a preemptive strike, throwing two beams out and striking at the beasts. He went to take to the air but another of them leaped and knocked him down. "Hah! You think that you are the only one that can read minds? We have been at it for years. You've got no chance." He flipped to his feet again and readied himself. He would have to find a way to win this battle without knowing what he was going to do. The wolves charged up beam like they had in the dream, Strega had no chance to dodge, they would intercept him. The beams unleashed and Strega shouted, releasing his ki and disappating the attacks. "You've learned some new tricks. But we won't fail this time!" They leaped at Strega and each time he dodged one another would be just where he managed to move. It took all he had just to avoid them. "You're going to be destroyed Strega. And if we destroy your spirit your body is just a husk." One chided. Yeah knew it was true. They had attacked him where he was most vulnerable. He had been lured here. He wondered how long they had controlled Ja'rel. the thought of his master infuriated him. He needed to think without thinking. There had to be a way. A thought came to him as he immediately dismissed it, hoping I had not been picked up on by the wolves. Strega allowed himself to disconnect just enough. He felt the side that had been a part of him for so long ad that had given him trouble in achieving the spirit walk. He let that part of him rise up and separate. Because of this he was able to have a front of fake thoughts. He smiled a initiated his plan to turn the tables. He thought of a physical strike to the head of the nearest wolf as he dodged but he actually summoned forth a beam of energy aimed at the base of the skull. He shot it like a bullet from his finger a the beast slumped over. The others stopped in their tracks. They had grown so accustomed to knowing what was going on that they weren't sure how to read a not al opponent. They were fighting blind. Now it was stew gas turn to go on the offensive. The next beasts mind was like a book when he planned to tear out Strega throat. He launched a perfect spear strike to the creatures throat, crushing it. The rest all came at once in anger. Part of Strega's mind thought a kick bit then he unleashed a nuclear shock wave, enveloping all but the leader. The monster turned and growled. "You think you won but there are more of us. I'll be back for you. You mark my words!" And with that the beast disappeared. Strega calmed himself, drawing in the rest of his being and becoming one again. He stood, looking around as the massive Fangori faded out of existence, their bodies turning to an and blowing away. He became aware of a wan standing next to him, ancient and wise. She had a bright smile on her face. "Congratulations my student. You have just completed your training. -------------- WC: 1019 TWC: 3776/3700 QUEST COMPLETE! |
