Once again, with the assistance of the telepathy gem, Rubic once again sought out an opponent to test his newly learned skills against. Training with Master Roshi, King Kai, and finally Kami had expanded his combat library many, many degrees and magnitudes, allowing Rubic to be far more efficient, effective, and advanced whilst in combat scenarios. Even now, Rubic was running through the vast archive of techniques and fighting styles he had witnessed used (or used personally) in order to prepare himself for his next challenge. Usually, opponents found with the telepathy gems were sometimes random, but Rubic seemed drawn in particular to a few individuals the most, particularly if memories of those individuals had passed through his processors recently. Regardless, now that he was in the aether, he searched for his opponent.

The battlefield was that of mountain. Rubic had been materialized near the very precipice thereof, the chilling winds whipping across the surface of the mountain amidst a perpetuating snow storm. Visibility was limited to a degree, but with Rubic’s seismic, sonar, and thermal sensors, navigating the path towards the top of the mountain proved no challenge. Perhaps the environment was supposed to challenge organic beings rather than those built of metal and spark. Regardless, Rubic continued forward, looking for his unknown opponent.

The gem was as small as the dysfunctional energy sapping nodes in his palms. And yet the properties were apparently fantastical. It could transport one’s mind into another realm, and it would typically be used to establish communications with others, no matter where they were located in the universe. Or so they say, but at least it sounded better than Skype. If this object had been presented to him during the early stages of reactivation, #19 would most likely had shrugged the power of the jewel off as an impossible feat. And yet, with all the experience that he had gathered thus far, it was more and more likely that this object would actually work. Either that, or he truly was ripped off.

One question that the pale machine had initially posed was if the gem worked as advertised, would it be compatible with mechanical beings. Organics had “minds” to speak of, but what of androids? He never got around to figuring that question out since his purchase, but with the spaceship hurtling through the dark void, there was little that Android #19 could do. Perhaps this would be an ideal time to experiment with the gem.

-----

#19 looked up.

He was not in the spaceship any longer. Immediately, he detected a noticeable temperature difference as blinding white snow assaulted the android. The winds were strong, nearly sending the heavy droid off the nearby cliff if he had not righted himself in time.

Where was he?

Amidst the howling blizzard, his audio sensors picked up the sounds of snow bring crunched underfoot. The noises were faint, but grew stronger with each passing moment. Someone was here, and was approaching closer and closer to his position.

The android attempted to measure any energy signature, but all attempts proved fruitless. There were only so many explanations for this phenomenon, and none seemed more likelier than the rest. Diving behind a relatively large boulder protruding from the snowstorm, #19 narrowed his eyes and gazed at the general direction of the source. The heavy footsteps grew louder and louder, but at this point, his vision was unable to make out even a silhouette.

Snow began to accumulate on the tall android's form. Over six and a half feet tall, the stark white painted android looked around at the landscape, quite disinterested in the natural beauty of it--according to some accounts by organics--and more focused on tracking down his target. The telepathy gems always had a way of making sure one could find a willing opponent, regardless of the circumstances. Even then, however, the search for the opponent was almost as challenging as the actual battle.

Regardless, Rubic continued forward, searching through the passes around the mountain as it ascended upwards towards its peak. Now, Rubic came upon a ledge near the top, large enough for individuals to do battle--so a respectable distance--almost as if fate itself had carved the rock of the mountain for that expressed purpose. As Rubic panned his head around the region, he noticed indentations in the snow accumulating in the mountains and a lingering heat from them that was soon fading away with the arctic cold. It was all Rubic could do to keep his joints and components from freezing or malfunctioning due to the cold while exploring the area.

Rubic bent down to examine the footprint, the outline quickly becoming obscured by the wind and snow storm that was apparently quite pervasive on this mountain, limiting visibility drastically. It appeared someone had been here recently, likely Rubic's opponent. With that, Rubic checked his scanners again, looking out for any other sign of life on this desolate, snow-covered peak. Finding none, Rubic stood up to his full height again and began to traverse along the path, noting that the tracks had already become too obscured to track effectively. Then again, Rubic was not designed for tracking but for war. As such, he possessed no subroutines to accomplish the task of tracking down his target. His processor defaulted to following the trail again, looking up towards the peak to see if his opponent waited there.

Someone was definitely approaching. #19 remained as concealed as he could behind his makeshift cover, peeking just a little over the top. His gaze concentrated on what seemed to be a humanoid form making its way towards him in the blinding blazing blizzard. The android attempted to measure the figure’s energy signature, but once again, none was measured. Whoever this individual was, the two most likely scenarios would be that either the person was an expert at ki suppression, or they were completely synthetic, like him. Of course, if what they said about the gem was true, and that his “mind” was in some alternate dimension, the possibility that his ability to detect any power level became nonexistent had some form of merit. But still, the identity of the other being was unclear, even at this close of a distance. His visual sensors did not pick up much, and the furious snow around him did not allow a clear view at all.

However, despite such a setback, he was able to guess when movement had stopped, and it appeared that the individual was crouching down for some reason. Android #19’s eyes narrowed, as he slid further back. What little noise he made was lost in the raging storm above. Now thoroughly smothered in snow, the android did notice when his internal temperature continued to plummet. At this rate, his systems would fail as he froze in this strange area. He needed to initiate movement again, to generate some internal heat. As for the stranger that was starting to walk again, there was no data on their combat ability. A distraction would suffice for now; it’ll provide ample intelligence on their reaction, and would provide enough time for him to increase the distance. Two beams out of his eyes shot out, aiming at the ground behind the trudging giant. As he expected an inevitable explosion, #19 began to move backwards from his hiding spot, making his way to the other side of the cliff.

The snow was beginning to be highly debilitating at this point. The android continued to pan around for his intended opponent, but no signatures were showing up, which was slightly disturbing, to be perfectly honest. Perhaps his opponent had a method of optical camouflage, and the possibility existed of said individual being able to hide their signature from Rubic's advanced sensor suites. Even then, the android continued to move about, generating heat as often as possible to ensure his metallic and synthetic joints and components did not freeze up.

However, at that moment, his thermal sensors detected an energy source behind him, the blasts impacting the ground at Rubic's feet. The android performed a combat roll, his body rolling forward into the snowy ground before lowering himself into a combat stance facing the direction the energy came from. While not quite quick enough to perhaps avoid the attack were it to be aimed at his back, Rubic had reacted as quickly as one could expect from a combat android. Regardless, now that Rubic had an idea of where his opponent was at, Rubic slowly moved in that direction, panning around as he only caught a glimpse of movement from a rather round figure. Unfortunately, the image was too obscured to perform a physical match with any other perceived entity in the Rubic's databanks. For now, Rubic would have to be cautious.

The android continued to move up towards where he saw the motion, still looking out for his opponent in the blinding white snow. Rubic amplified his sensors' sensitivity to maximum, hoping to detect some kind of trace of his target...

A small explosion erupted where the two beams struck the ground. Large chunks of snow filled the immediate vicinity, although visibly there seemed to be no difference; the blizzard showed no signs of stopping anytime soon, and the weather only seemed to worsen as time went on. The falling snowflakes only continued to blur Android #19’s vision. At this rate, he would be completely blind. He had no geographical data regarding this location, nor could he detect any form of power level from the figure ahead. Ideally, there would be at least some reaction, but after the eye beams hit their mark, his opponent only changed their position slightly, nothing more. There was no sign of retaliation, nor did his internal scouter measure any sort of ki signature.

And now, he had given his position completely away; of course, he could always escape this situation by flying off of the mountain, but that would only be a temporary solution. Without any shelter, he was doomed to shut down on this lifeless piece of rock. An alternate option would be to finally engage the enemy--wait, when did he deem the individual before him as a threat? There was absolutely no data to support that claim. The freezing temperatures must be affecting his judgment in some way. In fact, he was the one that attacked first, without even making a solid effort to identify who it was. This was a critical error, indeed. The next step would have to consist of him initiating some form of gesture. Whoever it was, if they were friendly, then all he had to do was to feign ignorance at the eye beams, or come up with some form of reasonable argument. If they were indeed hostile, then he would have concrete evidence supporting that notion, and can react accordingly.

Yelling would be almost futile in this storm, however; his voice box was not suited for transmitting high magnitudes of decibels. Visual contact would have to be made. Holding his hands up, hopefully where the other can see them, he silently began to approach the individual as well.

Rubic’s sensors were beginning to deteriorate rapidly, or perhaps the storm was getting that much worse. Even now, inches were accumulating on the mountain side rapidly, snow beginning to pile up on the android’s form as he proceeded slowly back the way he came, where those blasts had come from. Even then, visibility was beginning to get worse and worse. However, as if by some miracle, Rubic could see the shape of his opponent, his silhouette just barely visible amongst the snow and clouds. Rubic proceeded forward cautiously, preparing to strike at his opponent once he had far better visual confirmation.

As Rubic approached, warnings of temperature malfunctions were scrolling past his vision, indicating that the cold was beginning to significantly debilitate his systems. He would have to end this spar quickly in order to leave. It was then that Rubic saw the individual with his hands raised in a typical surrender fashion, the rotund android soon coming into view.

“Identified. Subject is Android Number Nineteen,” Rubic said aloud, just barely loud enough for his opponent to hear him. Rubic relaxed his stance a little bit before nodding to his would be opponent. “Assessment: This environment is not conducive to combat. We should leave.”
