It hadn’t taken Yume very long to find what appeared to be the training grounds deep within the aptly named Forest of Illusion. Anyone who wasn’t capable of either telepathy or the ability to sense energy would’ve found themselves lost forever in the seemingly endless rows of trees. There was no way to determine which way led out of the forest once you had entered more than a few hundred metres in. Even if someone had entered the forest and planned to merely walk in a straight line, the sheer growth of plants and trees made it nearly impossible to walk more than a few metres in a straight line. Of course Yume had been repeatedly warned by the local Kanassan trader he had been working with in his spare time (zeni didn’t grow on trees after all) regarding the forest, which had brought him to his first question regarding the inordinate amount of time he’d apparently have to spend to find the training ground. “Why couldn’t I just fly over the forest until I was where I needed to be?” Granted, the Kanassan didn’t know that he was capable of simply materializing himself within the city and its blindingly obvious energy readings. But the youth did have a policy of never materializing anywhere he wasn’t recognized. He’d made that mistake once and it had cost him… Then again, if it hadn’t been the male’s side of the hot springs he’d appeared within the last time he tried, he probably would’ve been tempted to try again. But that incident aside, the youth wasn’t all that keen on instantly materializing in a City full of individuals more than capable of mind-raping him. All of that aside however, the Kanassan’s response had been to point towards what appeared to be a large mountain range, abundant with trees that Yume took to be the forest. It was only after he had tried to reach the City from directly above the next day that he discovered that there was no supposed mountain. The trees just happened to be that tall. Also, considering the sheer strength and width of a trunk that would be needed to support such a structure, it meant that the canopy itself would be more than likely crisscrossed with a sheer barricade of ‘branches’…. Yes, Yume had even made quotation marks with his fingers to himself in frustration upon discovering that said ‘branches’ were more like the trunks of massive redwoods themselves. Now he understood King Yemma’s obsession with the mahogany from Malachor V. If those trees were even bigger than the ones here on Kanassa, he was never going to try looking for anything in that forest. Especially since the mahogany trees there were apparently ki-resistant as well…. So he had been forced to trek through the forest on foot. The one good thing that had come about as a result of this was that the forest floor was relatively even. Had the human warrior been forced to also climb uphill as he originally thought he was going to have to do, he doubted he’d have been as calm about the entire ordeal. In any case, all had been said and done and he’d finally reached the city of the Saljuk. It had been laughably easy for him to reach said location, despite the aptly named Forest of Illusion. The youth was surprised that the forest was as undamaged as it was, especially considering the far lesser-tempered individuals he had seen demonstrating an ability with telepathy. Then again, telepathy itself wasn’t a rare skill. Uncommon, but not impossible to find in someone that didn’t have the natural aptitude for the ability. Yume had simply picked up on the possibility of himself having such aptitude and manifested it on his own. However, he lacked the knowledge to use it for anything other than to either communicate telepathically or gain a deeper perception of his opponent’s actions and possible attacks in combat. Which was why he had ventured to his intended location deep within the forest. Or at least he would’ve, had he not sensed a presence a few feet above him. Apparently the presence knew they’d been detected as well, as they made themselves known to him a moment later by gracefully descending onto the grass in front of him. Before the Kanassan could even say a word however, Yume raised a hand in interruption. “Okay, Mr. NPC. Yes I am aware of the risks that whatever trials I am going to undertake will test me to my very soul and I’m not going to back out. Especially considering I’ve spent the better part of a day traversing this forest just to get here. Then again, I keep forgetting I can just instantly get myself out of the forest. The downsides of having a technique that grants the user almost Godlike omnipotence I suppose, that I keep forgetting I have it. So…anything I missed?” The Kanassan blinked twice slowly before Yume almost felt the alien’s brainwaves go haywire in an attempt to make sense of anything he had just said. ”Maybe I should’ve just gone with the quiet PC approach and nodded to everything? It probably wouldn’t have taken as long to get started…” By the time the elderly Kanassan had gotten his head straight again, Yume had already been in the midst of counting the number of leaves on the third lowest branch on the tree closest to him. Shaking his head, he interrupted Yume’s absentmindedness with the equivalent of a mental poke. Or he tried to. For the moment the Kanassan’s mental finger had prodded towards the youth, what could only be described as a sheer sphere of mental force shimmered into existence around his mind, as if it had been always there. Just by probing the barrier, he could tell that it was probably harder than even the strongest obsidian as it didn’t even shimmer. It merely remained in a blank and opaque manner. If the youth’s combat abilities reflected his mental abilities in anyway, it was going to be a terror trying to land a blow on him. The fact that his mental prod didn’t even stir the human youth from his counting added to the mystery of who this strange, potential student was. Forcing more energy into his prod, the Kanassan threw the equivalent of a mental spear towards the wall surrounding Yume’s mind, only to visibly recoil as the energies rebounded like water upon rock, knocking him back. Fortunately however, it had managed to draw Yume’s attention as he blinked owlishly at the recovering Kanassan. “Sorry, did you say something?” Unsure of whether or not to be relieved that he caught the human’s attention or frustrated that his extreme efforts had garnered such a weak response, he settled for a mixture of both. “I did try to get your attention…telepathically,” ground out the elder Kanassan in as polite a manner as he was able to manage at the time. Yume blinked in return that time. “Wouldn’t it have been easier to like…you know, just call out with your voice or something?” This time, the elder Kanassan did give in to his frustration and palmed his face heavily, wondering why it felt like he was the one undergoing the trials each time and not the students that came along. It took another few seconds for the Kanassan to regain his composure enough to begin explaining the testing process to Yume. “Alright newcomer. In order to gain access to the temple and truly master your mind, there are three trials you must first overcome. They are the Trial of Patience, Trial of Wisdom and Trial of Courage. Now, in order to…” The Kanassan let out a sigh as Yume raised his hand in a manner akin to a pre-adolescent Kanassan child. “Yes, newcomer?” “Well…this temple is here to teach me to master my abilities with my mind right?” The Kanassan nodded in reply. “Well…what would courage and wisdom have to do with training to use one’s mind? I’m not even sure patience is a valuable attribute to test for with regards to evaluating one’s potential to learn the mental arts.” The Kanassan found himself clenching his jaw tightly, even if one of the youth’s answered happened to be the answer to the trial of Wisdom, as harshly worded as it was. In truth, the Trial of Courage was merely a test to see if the potential student possessed enough resolve and bravery to be willing to risk training their mind. It wasn’t really a trial at all. Which was the heart of the purpose of the Trial of Wisdom, to question one’s self and all that there was, including the nature of the trials themselves and whether or not they were all indeed designed to test the mind’s potential. However, no one had ever simply dismissed the trials entirely at all. It made the Kanassan furious that some inferior human would dare to tell a studied master of the mental arts such as himself that their methods of determining potential students was flawed. Even if the youth had what had to be the most powerful mental defences he’d ever encountered, it didn’t mean the youth had any other abilities with his mind. He would make that very clear. ----------------------------------------- WC: 1,551 |

“Oh? You presume that these trials are not an adequate measure of one’s mental potential?” asked the elder haughtily. Yume sighed in response before reaching up to his visor, slowly lowering it so that his closed eyelids came into view. “There is only one thing that should ever be questioned when it comes to how far someone can go with their mind. Things like patience, wisdom and courage are just aspects of what one truly needs to unlock their potential. Just because someone has those traits doesn’t necessarily make them worthy. Not having those traits doesn’t make anyone less worthy.” The elder allowed a wry grin to form on his face, noting that the youth’s eyes were still closed. As disrespectful as this youth was, he seemed to indeed possess wisdom in great measure. Even if he was wrong about the trials being meaningless, he was clearly a valid candidate to be accepted into the Order. “So what is this one thing you claim is all that one requires to unlock their mental powers?” asked the elder. The air seemed to ripple before a psychic pressure slammed down onto the Kanassan’s shoulders as Yume opened his eyes, revealing red orbs that rippled with a silver, fiery sheen. “Resolve. The resolve that I can and will make these strange sensations in my mind my own. That I can and will control this power, and I will go as far as I can with whatever potential I possess within myself.” ”Incredible, this isn’t focused telekinesis. It’s merely passive force from his mental focus! If he were to learn to focus this energy….” thought the elder, even as he began to breathe haggardly under the increasing telekinetic force Yume was applying subconsciously around him. “You…you have passed the trials.” Just like magic, the crushing pressure disappeared and Yume’s glinting eyes had been obscured by his metallic visor once more, obscuring the resolute orbs of emotion behind it. “Great. So what am I going to be learning first?” ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMPLETE WC: 334 Total: 1,885 |
