“So, I can project my spirit outside my body?” Yume hesitantly asked the elderly female Kanassan who had been assigned as his teacher, Ja’rel. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the taller woman, but the fact remained that projecting one’s soul outside of their body sounded like a very dangerous idea. Let alone the whole metaphysical concept of being able to consciously exist outside one’s own body…

“How is that even supposed to work? Wouldn’t my own body stop functioning after I leave it? I’m pretty sure my body would shut down if my soul wasn’t around to help it keep everything going. Don’t you have a book or something that describes just how this is meant to work scientifically?”

In response to the human’s question, the Kanassan opened her mouth as if to speak, only to close it before abruptly making a series of movements with her left hand. She then pressed her index finger against Yume’s forehead, causing the youth to hear a monotonous female voice in his head.

“There are in fact two ways to perform this technique. One of which does indeed cause death if maintained for too long. The method of spirit walking affects your conscious mind only. It isn’t really your spirit being projected, but your consciousness.“

“Okay then, so how does the process work?”
responded Yume mentally, not bothering with verbal communication.

”The method is similar to how we use telepathy. You know that by using telepathy, we are able to detect and even observe the surface thoughts of individuals around us. By extending our conscious minds into the waves of telepathic energy that we emit, our minds can interpret and manipulate the waves of telepathic energy into an image that produces sight within the mind. Essentially allowing you to see and feel things for yourself far clearer without needing to be there physically.”

”How large can the field be?”

“Typically, you would want the field to be as compatible to your mind as possible, so as wide as your usual field of visual perception. Although if your mind is capable enough of sustaining more complex images, you could provide yourself with an absolute field of vision. Are you ready to give it a try?”
At this, Yume nodded, as unnecessary as the motion was with master and student’s minds still interwoven.

”Very well then. There are three steps to successfully spirit walking. I will tell you them now. The first step is to be able to increase your control with your mental energies to the point where you can feel your own mind’s ability to reach out around you. Secondly, you must be able to allow your brain to manipulate these waves into something you can recognize. Finally, you must be able to allow your conscious mind to traverse these energies and manipulate them. Any questions?”

Yume had immediately realized a few potential manipulations of the technique in mind, only for Ja’Rel’s mental voice to cut in.

”The first idea you have, while feasible, is not very useful. While it can be used for you to be able to completely observe everything around your physical being, you will be completely immobile and unable to consciously function. Also, from what others tell me, your ability to detect energy as well as the mental energies of other beings should be more than enough without a visual support to aid you.”

“Your second idea however is feasible,” continued Ja’Rel. “However, you would either require a lot of training or a natural separate set of minds in order to be able to visualize more than one place at once. A previous student of mine had the ability to split his physical being into two, yet he himself did not consider this idea. Yet I feel you do not share this ability. It is interesting to see how your mind works, Yume. This is as far as I can instruct you. Only you can develop your own path.”

With that, Ja’Rel removed her finger and gave a weak smile before closing her eyes and returning into a meditative state.

”I will ensure your spirit does not stray too far from your body, good luck” Ja’Rel sent telepathically.

Yume’s eyes slowly opened, the youth letting out a sigh as he did so.

It had been six hours since he’d started attempting to project his spirit outside his body. Although he had easily managed to feel the field that embodied his own mental limits, he found himself unable to project his conscious mind into the field around him, never mind the other applications of the technique he had come up with. The worst part was he was beginning to realize why he wasn’t able to apply the finishing part of the new technique.

”You can’t consciously think of a reason for you to need to do so.” Ja’Rel’s mental voice softly echoing in his mind only solidified the troublesome thoughts he had been having. While he had recognized the usefulness of being able to see anywhere he wanted without needing to look there for himself, his mind simply couldn’t find a way to apply the technique during combat. As useful as the ability to see all around him was on paper, it was rendered almost completely useless due to the side-effect of being immobile and defenceless while doing so.

Yume had always believed in only needing his ability to sense energy along with his other basic senses to track and defend himself. Being able to observe from every angle was comparable to a rare maniac’s item. It was a priceless and rare commodity, yet completely useless in reality, no matter what obscure benefits it could provide.

“This probably would’ve gone better if I had learned to separate my consciousness before coming here. Or just knowing if there was any use for separating my consciousness from my body in an actual fight.”

”Besides being intangible and unaffected by ki attacks? Your consciousness does retain all your spiritual energies. You will still have access to your mental abilities, as well as half your strength at any time,” responded Ja’Rel.
“Wait, I can use my mental abilities as a consciousness? That makes sense I suppose, but how do I retain half my power as a conscious? Wouldn’t it all be in my body?”

”Your energy is a combination of your physical body and your mental spirit. Since your consciousness embodies the latter, it provides your consciousness with half of your potential.”

“But I don’t have a body to generate the ki with, wouldn’t I have to worry about running out?”

”Your ki is limitless in the projected state.”

Now that got Yume’s attention.

“I think I heard you wrong…”
”You heard me correctly,” Ja’Rel’s voice interrupted whatever Yume had been about to say. ”Although perhaps ‘limitless’ was the wrong word to use. You are bound by your mind’s perception of your maximum. Also, before you say anything regarding your Kaioken technique, that skill boosts your body’s natural limits, not your mind’s. Without a body to channel the Kaioken through, your consciousness will receive no benefits and only the mental strain the technique provides.” Having destroyed that potential idea before it could even take root, Ja’Rel continued.

”When I said ‘limitless’ I meant that as long as your mind continues to perceive yourself as such, you can never run out of ki to use in the projected state. In that form, how exhausted you are literally becomes naught but a state of mind. Is that enough of a potential base for you to apply into your fights?”

In response, Yume’s eyes glinted with an eerie green light, only for them to widen in pain a moment later as he fell to the ground clutching his head as though he’d been struck in the forehead by a mallet. Ja’Rel’s face adopted a similar expression a moment later.

”How far did you try to project yourself just then?” Ja’Rel’s mental voice sounded strained as it resounded through Yume’s pounding skull.

“Well, I wasn’t sure what a safe distance was, so I figured I’d start with halfway from the edge of my field.” This statement actually caused Ja’Rel’s eyes to shoot open in shock, only for them to glaze over in anger.

“Do you have…any idea just how far your mental field reaches?” rasped Ja’Rel, age having taken a toll over her ability to speak. She managed to regain her composure before closing her eyes once more in order to facilitate mental communication.

”The entire village we’re in takes up less than one percent of your field. It would’ve taken you hours to come back, maybe even days! You would’ve died by then due to starvation.”

“Really?” Yume closed his eyes, focusing hard on his field only to discover in shock that he had completely missed the village he was standing in that now seemed so infinitely small in comparison…

”You have great mental potential. It comes with the enormous physical reserves you possess. But developing mental energies at this point meant that your mental potential is truly terrifying if it required this much of your physical strength to manifest in order to sustain it. As you can see however, while it offers you limitless vision, the sheer amount of mental energy you have is uncontrolled and bleeds everywhere. Essentially, unless a strong signature is near you, you’d never consciously notice them because your mental aura simply is too wide for you to be sensitive to.”

”I know you have near-perfect control of your own body’s energies, but telekinetic manipulation requires a level of control far beyond that of what you currently possess,” continued Ja’Rel.
”Knowing that, will you still continue the training?”

Yume’s response was to close his eyes before wincing in pain again, simultaneously with Ja’Rel. The youth’s eyes squinted open a moment later.

“Well, it wasn’t as bad that time...” stated Yume to himself, only to be toppled over face first by a blow to the back of the head. He shot up from the ground an instant later, looking for whatever had struck him, only to find a floating rock hovering in the air.

”Next time give some warning before you try that sort of thing again!” Ja’Rel’s voice angrily rippled through the youth’s skull as he immediately found himself falling to his knees, apologizing profusely. It was one thing to have a scorned woman after you. It was another thing entirely to have a scorned, elderly woman with the ability to flay you limb from limb with her mind alone after you.

”Alright then, it seems you’re getting a better handle on where you want to project your consciousness. We’ll use that for developing your control and awareness over your mental field. Start by projecting into the immediate area around you before trying for further distances.”

“Okay,” responded Yume resolutely as he closed his eyes, ready to finally take the next step in his training.
