[Saiyan Gains] The Saiyan Chishan was walking slowly through the market of East City. He had been to this market many times before and, he imagined, many times after this. It was one of his favorite places on the planet; a great place to just stroll through and observe real human nature. His eyes scanned over the many bobbing heads that moved through the streets, feeling more at peace than he had in awhile. He had a prior engagement to get to; Hercule had finally taken some time off and contacted him, looking for a friendly sparring match. Chishan had been thrilled to accept, finally glad to see one of his friends again. At least he knew where Hercule had been... Levana... His thoughts scoured to the woman he had considered his friend. He still hadn't been able to locate her and it was beginning to worry him. This action was unusual for her, even in the short time he knew her. And to be quite honest, he missed her... His mind was so wrapped up in its own thoughts that he didn't notice the scuffle happening in the alleyway just to his left. A bunch of kids were beating on a smaller one, insults and shouts of violence bouncing off the brick walls. Others would most likely walk by and just think it was 'kids being kids'. But his loss of attention didn't last long and not a moment later, Chishan's eyes turned to the miniature brawl happening feet away from him. He recognized unfair advantages and when one fighter was being targeted by many. "Hey!" His hard voice pierced the air. The gang of children's ears popped up and heads turned away from their prey to the much taller, clearly older adult. Panicking, the children stopped attacking and ran down the other side of the alley, worried of their chances of getting in trouble. They left the smaller child in a heap, curled up to protect himself. He was about the age of nine and Chishan could hear the sound of angry tears streaming out of the boy's covered face. There was no point in chasing down the gang of kids at this point; they would be nearly impossible to find with their low power levels. But this kid...Chishan could sense untapped power in this kid that surprised him. Is this some sort of training? Letting kids beat him so he can get stronger, wondered the Amnesiac Saiyan, his head cocked to the side. Deciding to not make assumptions, he bent down and put his right hand on the boy's shoulder. "Hey, you alright?" WC: 434 |

It was a sad sight to behold, but many onlookers merely walked by as the youngster was pummelled. For all they knew, he could have been within an inch of his life. Luckily for him, he was not, though that wasn't to say that it didn't hurt, because it did...a lot. Having grown up in somewhat of a rough place, Goten was kind of used to it, but still the tears streamed down his face as he was left helpless, with multiple fists reigning down on him, with a number of swift kicks adding insult to injury. On a number of occasions, the young boy felt as though he wanted to lash out, taking the building rage out on the bullies that surrounded him. But, as ever, nothing really materialised. Though he wanted to fight back...the simple fact was that he didn't know how, and he knew it would only incur yet more wrath. That was until Goten heard something... "Hey!" The loud bellowing voice seemed to come from nearby. He wasn't sure why, but the surrounding kids scattered in all directions upon looking up to see who was stupid enough to try and stop them. Whoever or whatever they had seen had produced enough fear in them to not linger, as the sprinted off. Goten relished in the relief of the constant pain beginning to subside. He still felt battered and bruised, but at least the hard part was over. The young boy sniffed as he poked and prodded his stomach and ribs to check if there was anything broken. It didn't seem to be, but there were a hefty number of raw areas and bruises, which over time would probably get worse before they got better. A large hand grasped the boy's shoulder. It shocked him a little at first, but it wasn't long before he realised that it wasn't going to result in yet another savage attack. "Hey, you alright?" The voice spoke again. Goten sniffed again, as he tried to pick himself up and sit up against the wall. It was then that he got his first glimpse at his saviour. Who knows where he would have ended up had the man not spoken up when he had. "...Yeah, not too bad," Goten finally replied, as he wiped the blood from his face and brushed it off against his clothes, which were already quite dirty. "N-Nothing I can't handle," He tried to joke. "But thanks, mister...who are you anyway? I don't think I've seen you around here before," WC: 425 |

The boy righted himself upon realizing Chishan was not another attacker, cleaning himself off in an attempt to seem tough. He didn't look like someone who was well off in life, more resembling the bums of the streets. To most people, this would make them shy away in disgust and move on. But for the pleasantly unaware Chishan, this was not the case. This kid has clearly been dealing with this kind of beat-down for quite some time, he thought as the boy played down the attack. That's when he raised his eyes and asked the taller Saiyan who he was. "My name is Chishan." He said softly, resting his hands on his knees as he remained squatting. "You seem to be alright, couple sore spots and cuts." He said, observing the boy's bruised face. "But why did you let those other kids just beat you like that? Why not defend yourself..." He cut off, fumbling through his brain. "Sorry, I must have missed your name. You are...?" WC: 168 |

"My name is Chishan," Goten's savior began, still squatting in front of the young boy. "You seem to be alright, couple sore spots and cuts. But why did you let those other kids just beat you like that? Why not defend yourself..." He cut off, fumbling through his brain. "Sorry, I must have missed your name. You are...?" The youngster picked himself up off of the ground, dusting off his filthy clothes, but still only standing as tall as the squatted man. "I'm Goten," The little orphan began. "Nice to meet you," He extended his hand to shake Chishan's hand before he continued. "Well, I'm kind of used to it by now..." Goten wiped the tears from his eyes. They were noticeably red, having been rubbed a lot. "Besides, I don't really know how. I mean, I watch the world tournaments each year, but I don't really have any money for training, since I'm just an orphan," Goten looked up at the man, he could see that Chishan was wearing some type of armour that he hadn't seen before. On one of the chest plates, there was an insignia inscribed. But what was most noticeable, was that Goten could see that Chishan looked strong. "Erm...you look pretty strong...do you...do you think that could help me?" WC: 218 TWC: 643 |

Chishan clasped the boy's hand softly, shaking it like he would any other man's. The boy was not tall, that was for sure as he stood at the same height as Chishan crouched. But behind his tear-stricken, puffy eyes, he saw a spirit that surprised him. Though it was evident this nine year old had a hard-knock life, most likely suffering attacks like this once or twice a day, there was a glimmer of hope in him. He observed this as Goten explained about watching the world tournaments on television. What caught his attention was his words of having no money for training and being an orphan. This is where he interjected. "Sounds like you're in a rough spot, my friend. You and I...we have some things in common. We both don't know who our parents are and we both have a desire to get better than we are now. I can see your power, Goten...you're a lot stronger than perhaps you know." He said, smiling softly. He didn't see any reason to talk down to the boy for Chishan had no belief that just because you're younger, you're weaker. In fact, it was nearer the truth to say the Amnesiac Saiyan believed the young could use power better than adults, with their hearts still freed of greedy inhibitions. Maybe that was Master Roshi rubbing off on him. Maybe because he had seen what his friend Minosha could do. Who really knows.
Chishan nodded in response. "I'd be glad to help you. Though I don't consider myself a master, I can teach you some things that you can use to defend yourself. But I don't want you running off and abusing what I teach you; you've got a lot of spirit so you have to keep a level head, understand?" The Saiyan rose to his full height. "Now...hit me." A few things, which Chishan had said had resonated with Goten. The first of which being that he was apparently a lot stronger than he realised. This had been a re-occurring theme in Goten's short life. Many times resulting in unintentionally hurting others, without even realising it. His hidden strength only really seemed to appear during times of great duress or anger. But having Chishan directly say it to him, and not in a way that filled him with dread, gave the young boy hope. The second thing were two words in particular..."hit me," Goten had never really struck out of his own accord before, and the last time it had happened had resulted in disastrous consequences. Close to a year ago, upon yet another violent attack he was forced to endure, the young boy had acted completely out of instinct, lashing out on another orphan, and had hospitalized the young teen. Since that day, Goten had never really wanted to let his anger get the better of him, given that it could result in such destruction. "Uhh..." The boy stuttered, still deciding whether hitting a grown man was really the best course of action. However, across the road, Goten caught a slight glimpse of a poster advertising the next World Martial Arts tournament. It was then that the young orphan realised that he had no choice but to do what Chishan said. After all, he had asked for help, and if this was the only way he was going to get it, then he'd have to give it his best shot. The youngster nodded and focused his gaze towards the man that had saved him. He took a nice, deep breath as he clenched his fist. Goten didn't exactly know much about punching technique, apart from that which he had seen on TV, but he instinctively parted his feet, sticking the left foot slight in front and pulled his arm back, before throwing it straight forwards, towards the man's abdomen. The boy moved his feet in preparation for his attack, falling into an untrained battle stance. Very much like the one I used to have, he recalled as he thought of his few weeks on Damaskia. This wasn't so much a bout to Chishan as it was a test to see this boy's strength. Senses only did so much; you don't truly know power until you feel it for yourself. And that's when the strike came; a crudely formed front punch that sunk hard into the armor of his gut. It resonated quickly throughout the rest of his body, traveling through his sternum to his brain in bright colored letters reading *PAIN*. The raw, untrained force was not the strongest he had felt, but it rivaled his own when he had first started out. And dammit, did it hurt. His jaw clenched tightly and his hands instinctively wrapped around his abs, in a futile attempt to heal the soreness. But as his muscles tensed up and his stomach flipped angrily, a chuckle escaped his lips. It wasn't mocking in tone but one of clear...amazement. "Goten..." He said, the word riding out on the painful exhale. "That was...a hell of a blow." His chuckle continued as the pain began to die down. He looked down at the boy, who looked terrified. Either it was the pain he had just inflicted or his own power, Chishan couldn't know. But he bent down on his right knee and laid his hand on the boy's shoulder. "Now that was called a front punch. It's the basic type of punch and can be extremely effective if used correctly...very much like how you did." He said, rubbing his armor. He also noted the boy didn't seem to feel any pain from punching the padded plate. He brought his other hand up, clenched tightly into a fist. He turned it, as if he was holding a mug. "This is a thrust punch. It works similar to your attack, aimed mostly for the torso while the front punch can be used for any other body part." He reached for the boy's arm and held it up in front of him. "Those are strikes. I think what might help you more is learning to block and dodge. Now say if I were to throw a punch at you, blocking is simply moving that attack out of the way." He demonstrated, slowly throwing his right fist forward and using the boy's arm to knock it out of the way. "This works with both arms. Now say if someone is coming at you with a haymaker, a stronger punch, you can't simply block it with one arm. It could hurt you a lot. What you do then is cross your arms in front of you, making an 'X', thus doubling your defensive strength." He said, moving Goten's arms in front of himself to make the aforementioned blocking shape. "Now with all that said, how about I throw an attack and you try and block it?" WC: 504 TWC (For Starrk): 1426 |

Goten focused as the man explained various types of strikes to him, and their effects. Obviously, with the tournament coming up, this was going to be useful, even if he felt completely unprepared to attempt them, himself. It was as if all of the information was being stored inside, but he was finding it difficult to register it at point blank value. "Now with all that said, how about I throw an attack and you try and block it?" The other man finally finished. He stared at the young boy, waiting for a response, but Goten's mouth just went dry and his eyes widened. He had just taken a pretty hefty beating, and although the pain had already begun to subside, he didn't really fancy taking a few hits from someone who appeared far stronger. "Erm...I-I could try I guess," Goten finally replied, after taking a deep breath, in an attempt to relax. He hadn't really been very proficient in escaping the numerous blows that had been thrown his way in the past...but maybe today was different? Goten took another deep breath and took a couple of steps back to get some distance between the two of them, whilst falling into the usual martial arts stance that he had seen on TV. The announcer had always gone on about how this was to give the fighters the best chance to react both offensively and defensively to any action, and boy did Goten need that now. "Okay, I'm ready," The youngster announced, though in reality he felt anything but. WC: 260 TWC: 1,235 |

The trepidation in the boy's voice was obvious. Chishan had to bite back a laugh, knowing full well what the boy had heard when Chishan had spoke. He thinks I'm going to maliciously attack him. I shouldn't be so surprised, considering the nature...he thought solemnly, very much aware of the boy's predicament. A momentary flash of worry filled him and he thought twice about his suggestion, wondering if this was the best way to approach the child's self defenses. But the more thought he put into it, the more belief he had in his methods. Trying to protect him from danger would be moot; his life was full of pain and suffering already so he couldn't blind the boy to that. But he didn't want to shy him away from self-preservation either. He has such a spark in him...a potential for great power. I can't let anyone take that away, he thought frowning, a tinge of anger rising as he thought of all that had come before him and hurt Goten. I will not be like them. The boy had fallen into a martial arts stance, one that was chock full of mistakes and openings. But for a boy of nine with no previous training, it was actually astounding how his mimic had mirrored the fighters he had seen. Chishan openly smiled, showing the boy he was impressed. He spoke again, citing his readiness though the undertone still spoke volumes against it. This boy needs self confidence. He deserves it. Balling his right hand into a fist, he thrust out a punch to the boy's sternum. It was much weaker than anything he had ever thrown, with just enough power to not be considered flimsy. Also, because the boy had stepped back, Chishan didn't move into the punch, so no matter what, the fist wouldn't connect with the young lad's chest anyway. It would stop right before it if Goten proved truly unprepared. But Chishan had faith that the boy would at least take a chance in defending himself. WC: 339 TWC (For Starrk): 1,765 |

The fist of the Saiyan flew towards the young boy. In reality, it wasn't even that fast. Though the pace exceeded what Goten was used to, although that wasn't necessarily difficult given that he was only ever struck by other orphans, which were neither strong in the big picture, nor fast. Before the fist reached half way distance between Chishan and himself, Goten had a sudden flashback. His mind raced back to three years ago, and more specifically, himself watching the last World Tournament. The youngster was sat in the communal area of the orphanage, with many of the other orphans, gathered to watch the upcoming matches of the day. In particular, his memory was showing him a match between a fighter known as 'The Wolf man' and another warrior, known simply as 'Som' (Which most thought was quite an unusual name). The match begun with the larger combatant, The Wolf man, sprinting towards his Indian opponent. Som looked as though he was struck with crippling fear, barely able to move, until the vital moment, in which Som grabbed the huge fist and leaped into the air, thrusting himself forwards over the large arm and forcing his knee into his foe's awe-struck face. In that moment, Goten re-awoke in reality, the fist of the man that had saved him still forcing its way towards him, but suddenly, out of sheer instinct, the little boy grabbed the fist, and as if his body had been trained for years, he copied Som's technique and hopped up into the air and over Chishan's arm, launching his knee towards the man's face. What a chance Goten took. As Chishan's fist barreled in, intent on just testing the boy's reflexes, the youngster burst into action. He elegantly grabbed the Saiyan's fist and leapt over it, with the grace of a gazelle. He had a second of respect and admiration for the boy; for he defended and moved as fluidly as Chishan had been trained to do so. But he had little time to bask in it, as the boy's knee came forward and connected true with Chishan's forehead. The blow was surprising as well as shockingly strong, literally setting the older of the two a step or two backwards. His hands came up to the sore part of his face, his jaw clenching in pain. He stood there for a moment, letting the pain sink in to a dull soreness. After settling, he removed his hands and locked eyes with Goten, who was staring back at him in surprise. Chishan smiled. "Now that was brilliant. Great job, Goten." He said, giving his forehead bump a final rub. "You've got a lot more potential in yourself then you let on." He bent down again, to get to eye level with the boy and laid a supportive hand on his shoulder. "As long as you believe in yourself, I bet you can accomplish anything you want. Now I think you've earned yourself a little compensation." He let his brown pack slide down his right shoulder before catching it and opening it up. Fumbling around inside, he searched for the exact prize he had in mind. Finally, his hand fell upon the cloth stack buried down deep. With a wry smile, he pulled it through all his other objects inside until it broke the aperture of the brown sack. His hands had wrapped around a bright orange gi, with black lining around the neck and wrists. A thin black sash was tied around it, meant for the waist. On the breast pocket was the sigil for Turtle; Master Roshi's sign. Chishan had been given the tunic by Roshi as a reward for their training. Unfortunately, Roshi only had a child size and gifted it to him more as a "memorabilia trophy". As luck would have it, he had found a very suitable use for it. "I noticed your clothes aren't in the best shape. You deserve better than that." He took hold of the boy's hand and planted the gi in his hands. A thought came out of the darkness of his mind and he reached down and grasped his communicator as well, the one Rubic had given him. He was sure his android buddy wouldn't mind giving him another one. "There's a business card in the pocket of that gi for a Master Roshi. And I want you to have this. If you ever need my help, all you have to do is turn this on and press the large yellow button. It alerts all communicators, letting me know that you need me, alright? If you need a ride to Master Roshi's, let me know." He said, displaying how to use the little black box and then placing it on top of the tunic in his hand. He smiled softly at the boy before tussling his hair. "You did well, Goten. You're going to be a great warrior someday. I hope we see each other soon." And his bukujutsu pulled him from the ground, his body sailing into the sky as he shot a wave off to the bewildered child. WC: 585 TWC (For Starrk): 2350 |
