[Saiyan Gains]

Pan's stay in the temple was almost done. She'd been slowly absorbing the secrets of the flame and could manage and control it just a little bit better now. But there was something on her mind. In all the touchy-feely crap that had happened in their last meeting, she hadn't actually gotten the chance to spar. Just trading feelings and things was great for crying hour, but it didn't help her or Minosha get any stronger. She concentrated on her surroundings and melded herself with the astral realm. It had gotten so much easier to manipulate around her than when she first entered it.

She started with a world of infinite white and pulled a beautiful blue sky above them. The ground beneath her formed into a healthy green grassy field, like the ones found on either Earth or Vegeta-sei. Stopping for a moment there, she sat down and pulled off her boots. There were few things she enjoyed more than fresh grass between her toes. That wasn't what she was here for, of course. She was here for Minosha. Beyond the field that she currently inhabited, a forest filled the area, giving them a clearing to fight in and a covering canopy beyond it.

She summoned Minosha and waited patiently for him to arrive. Once he did, he would receive no real greeting other than, "Arm yourself." Following that, she charged at him and blurred her speed, completely destroying the space between them and unsheathing her axe at the same time. She started with a diagonal slice that would graze his chest if hit, and followed it by jamming the head of her axe against his abdomen. She spun around for a horizontal strike to compliment the diagonal one and followed it up with a hard headbutt from seemingly nowhere.

Rather than complete her assault with another brutal couple of hits, she stepped back and waited to see what Minosha could bring to this particular fight. There was no sign that she remembered their last encounter, or if she did, that she cared.

Minosha sat on the couch, staring at the gem that rested on the coffee table in front of him. It glowed. Someone called to him from the astral realm. By now, he had learned to tell the difference between the level of brightness on the jewel. A dim glow meant it was a stranger, randomly reaching out. A bright glow meant it was somebody he knew, had a deeper connection with. The Konatsu wrestled with his choice. The only person that he had regularly sparred with was Pan, and he wasn’t quite sure he was ready to face her yet. Not with everything that had happened last time. He felt foolish, how he had acted, like a child with a temper, and he was better than that. And she had comforted him as best she could, when she so clearly had reservations about it before.

In the end, he knew he had to go. He reached out, and clutched the gem in his palm, and after a brief blurring of surroundings found himself standing in a clearing.

"Arm yourself."

Minosha didn’t even get a chance. She was on him before he could speak, before he could think. He cried out as her axe bit into his chest, clearing the armor and slicing a superficial gash in the tender flesh beneath. No sooner did he feel the pain of the blade than did the blunt end of the weapon barrel into his stomach. Somehow in the frenzy of the onslaught did he manage to summon his power pole and raise it to block the axe that threatened to cleave his skull in two. It didn’t matter. What was one blocked attack? She gave him no mercy even then as her head bashed against his with resounding force.

The alien boy stumbled back, the ground around him rocking in a splinter of hazy images. He bent over, the pole forgotten on the floor as he clutched his stomach and chest, trying not to throw up or fall down. Minosha looked up at her, sad and confused, tears threatening to spill out. She looked back at him coldly, eyes like flint, no feeling in those dark depths. She shut him out, utterly and completely.

First Tapion... and now Pan...

He took a breath, and clenched his jaw, hardening his expression. He nodded, trying to come to terms with it. At first, Minosha reached down to grab the power pole, and then he remembered who had given it to him. So instead, he kicked it away and assumed a barehanded fighting stance. If she cut him to ribbons, it wasn’t real anyway.

He lashed his hand out and fired an impossibly fast beam, one that she would have no choice but to contend with. Then he charged, blurring from sight at the last second just as she had done previously. He was learning, and he was learning quickly. The Konatsu reappeared above her from behind, and he brought his foot down towards the top of her head. Then he dropped down, flipped backwards, formed a Sokidan, and launched it at her exposed back.

Because one knife in the back deserved another.

"You're going to fight me barehanded? Really, little bean?" Pan looked on in disbelief as the warrior attacked her. It smashed into her armor and left a little burn mark. She looked down at it then looked back at the warrior only to notice that he was gone. A sharp crack occurred as he smashed into her from behind, and she turned just in time to see him firing off another blast of ki energy. This one, like the previous one, smashed against her and caused a burn in her armor. "This again?" She asked.

"Honestly, little bean, if you can't fight against me with a cool head what makes you think you can fight against people who actually want you dead?" This was it. After weeks of remaining calm, this was going to spark her rage like nothing had before. Her power level started to spike even more, rising above its maximum. Her hair threatened to stand on end but fell at the last moment, though there was a red crackling to her pure white aura. In a flash of speed she was in his face. She grabbed his armor and spoke right into his face, leaving little to no space between them, which she likely wouldn't do with an older warrior, "I'm your friend, you stupid little shit. You can't keep coming at me with this muddled head of yours."

"You want to fight me like I'm him? Keep going for it. I'll kill you every time we meet. I'll never stop. Otherwise, calm the fuck down, quit acting like the world is against you, and fight me." She blurred her speed once more and took a battle stance, sheathing her weapon just before she did. "It's your choice, Minosha. We do this one way or another." Her aura was blazing and crackling with pure power but she was looking much more calm now that she'd gotten this out of her system. She waited carefully for her opponent to make his move.

Come on, little bean...

He was so confused. The Pan he had first met was stiff, but considerate. She even offered to help him on the battlefield if he needed it. Over a short period of time, she softened, if only a little. That little had been enough to latch onto. Then she went cold, right after Tapion did the same, right after he needed her to be steady the most. And now she switched gears on him again by suddenly reverting back to the Pan he was more familiar with.

When she grabbed Minosha by the armor, when she got right in his face, so close that she couldn’t be ignored, all ferocity and insistence, it scared him. Her unabashed candidness chastised him into silence and stillness. She called him a friend. He didn’t know if that meant she acknowledged his declaration of her as a friend, or if she actually considered herself to be his friend and thereby believed him to be hers as well. Either way, it was upon those words that he was truly reminded why he was here, at this moment, at this time, in the first place. It was because he was a bad friend. It was because he regretted their last encounter, and had ultimately answered her call in order to rectify it. And here he was, still, throwing another tantrum. She hadn’t asked for any of this; he had seen her struggle, and he had selfishly ignored it.

Pan reset her battle position, and he stood unmoving, mutely contemplating for what felt like a long time. His heart heavy, he knew what he had to do, and he couldn’t bring himself to look at her, and instead focused on a spot of dirt in the grass. Then, he spoke, his voice quiet and solemn.

“I’m sorry,” he began earnestly. “I should never have burdened you with my problems. It wasn’t fair to you. It also wasn’t fair of me to take out my frustrations on you. I haven’t known you very long and I’ve placed a great deal of expectations on you that you shouldn’t have to be responsible for. I am not a saiyan so I do not fully understand your ways and your culture, but that doesn’t give me the right to substitute them for my own. So I’ll make things easier for you. You...” He stopped abruptly, took a steady, even breath, and forced himself to finish. “You once told me that saiyans kill. That your race was made to kill.”

Slowly, deliberately, Minosha reached down to his sides, and unclipped the bindings on his breastplate, then lifted it over his head and threw it on the ground. He pulled off his gloves, and kicked off his boots. Except for his bloodied tunic and trousers, he was left entirely without armor, without protection. There was no possible way Pan could mistake his intentions. To drive it home, he lifted his head. His eyes looked at her, but stared right on through. He spoke again, a deliberate edge of provocation in his tone.

“So go ahead and do it.”

Then he moved, charged head on, not bothering to mask his attacks. He didn’t even attempt an energy blast this time. He assaulted her fast and hard, throwing out a quick one-two jab aimed for the stomach, another pair of swift punches towards the face, and then cranked his arm back in preparation for a solid right haymaker to land it right square on her head.

This way, Pan could feel that moment, the one she told him about, when you were in that instance of being a heartbeat away from life and death. Only the battle would matter. That’s what she’d said. And then she could forget about Minosha, and she wouldn’t have to be his friend anymore. The astral realm would dissolve, any bodily damage would be undone, and they could go back to life before they met. He wouldn’t cause her pain, or make her feel sorry for him. And he couldn’t get her involved with the sudden dangers presented by Tapion. If he kept hanging around her, eventually she would be, and he couldn’t bear the thought of something terrible befalling her resting on conscience. Minosha would be by himself again, but maybe that was for the best.

Maybe it was simply his fate to walk the path alone.

After a few moments Pan dropped her stance and shook her head, "You still don't get it. That's what we we evolved for. That's what we do best. That's not all that we live for." She dropped her stance and walked up to him. "We're not bestial creatures that can't control our urges and have to kill once every fortnight. Believe it or not there are Saiyan scientists. Saiyan scholars. And I've decided that I'm not just going to fight you and kill you. You and me?" She placed her hand on his shoulder, "We're going to get stronger together." She replayed her match with Tapion in her mind. This was the only real solution, this was the only way to help him without taking him by the hand and leading him like a child. That's what he was now, but he wouldn't remain that way. That wasn't her goal, either. She wanted him to grow up. She wanted to help him grow strong. She wanted, when she thought about it, for him to get to the moment that he didn't need her.

And that wasn't now.

"Besides," She dropped her hand from his shoulder, "I'm not going to kill you because you request it. There's no honor in that. I'm going to make you earn it, little bean. I'll see you again, same time next week. Get stronger, maybe I'll show you the ace up my sleeve." She started to walk away from the battlefield and eventually faded away from the astral realm altogether.

She opened her eyes in the Fire Temple and paused for a second. She couldn't have waited around to give him chance to rebute. The words needed to sink in. It couldn't be arguable that she was going to be there for him. Just as she'd been stubborn in refusing his friendship, now that she'd taken on Tapion's role as a guardian sibling, she was going to remain just as stubborn about that.

Circumstances.
