Base Powerlevel: 135,954 The sound of leather soles slapping against cold tile echoed off of the confined walls, making thinking difficult. Two men hastily walked down the long corridor, adorned in military attire. A myriad of medals and ribbons coated their shirts: each one telling an epic tale of bravery and perseverance. "So Kakarot's son hasn't been admitted into the ranks?" the one on the right asked, his pace never wavering. "He hasn't shown an iota of potential," the other hissed back defensively. Upon hearing this the man immediately stopped walking and turned to face his comrade. "Are you telling me," he began, "that the son of one of the most powerful warriors in the galaxy doesn't have potential? Is it not your job to bring out that potential? Make it happen soldier. Dismissed." The ostensible higher ranking officer left the premises, leaving the one in charge of training to contemplate what had just transpired. This kid had made him look bad in front of his supervisor... an example would need to be made of him. With a satisfied smirk on his face, the man walked into Gohan's room and found the lone Saiyan staring at the wall, shuffling some cards. "Listen here runt," his voice boomed. "You may have passed that little test, but I'm not impressed. As far as I'm concerned you're still a useless maggot, feeding off the accomplishments of your superiors. It's time to earn your keep, or be shipped to some godforsaken moon. Understood?" "I hope I don't have to fight you," Gohan cooly responded. This made the Elite laugh. "You're damn right! It wouldn't be much of a test if you died though." "I meant for your sake," the Saiyan whispered, just quiet enough so that the crazy Lieutenant couldn't hear. The two exited what had been the young Saiyan's home for four years and left the entire complex, all the while not exchanging a single word, until they came across a large, open space outside. It was a patch of dirt with white chalk marking what appeared to be boundaries in the shape of a rectangle. But he was alone. "Who's my opponent?" The Lieutenant laughed once more, enjoying every opportunity to mock Gohan. "Not so sure of yourself anymore, huh? Well she should be here any minute..." "She?"

“Yes, she,” a voice called out. If one were to look in the direction thereof, they could see a woman approaching the outlined battlefield. Her armor and outfit spoke volumes about her station, and the way she carried herself spoke volumes concerning her power and skill. Grey eyes looked upon the youth before her, Saiyan boots lightly patting across the dirt that would act as their sole judge. Adorning her body, she wore a traditional Saiyan Empire uniform, armor covering her torso. Her robe-like cloak danced around her in the light wind, marking her station as that of a Scholar—an instructor and a keeper of Stories, the histories of the Saiyan Empire. “I am First Class Cress, Scholar of the Story Holds,” she said, introducing herself to the young one, her eyes keenly examining them as if they could stare straight through one’s soul. Her eyes narrowed, perhaps in thought or perhaps in judgement, as she stepped into her side of the battlefield. “I am told you have shown promise—provided you could ever be bothered to show it. I am here to see just how strong you really are and see if you are worthy enough to enter the ranks of the Empire’s military,” she said, using only one hand to remove the cloak from her person, tossing it onto a nearby boulder. Her physique seemed to flex for a moment, as if working the muscles in preparation for the battle. Normally, she would not have bothered to test such a young warrior, a low-class soldier, so thoroughly, but his was a very… special case. Her scouter beeped faintly, her left eye appraising his power level with the device’s assistance. So far, she was not completely impressed, though he did show more promise than some of the other young ones that were to be taught and raised to be warriors. “Your lack of ambition and passion in this regard will not be tolerated,” she said, casting the Scouter aside. She blinked away the red haze for a moment, sliding her form down into the more traditional Saiyan stance—the three battles stance. All the while, she held no humor upon her expression as she weighed her opponent in her mind. So much talent… let us see if you are worthy of such a place in society. Without warning, she sped towards him, her legs propelling him towards him almost like a lightning bolt, her spin and raised leg betraying the kick that came quickly thereafter, lashing out towards his jaw—an attack more meant to jar his senses to a more alerted state rather than truly injure him. That was the last concession she would allow him, however—from here on out, she would refuse to hold back against the youth. Without hesitation, her booted foot came down opening her stance towards him and allowing her to strike with both of her fists in rapid succession before she stepped forward with the opposite foot, putting him directly to her left, where she would assault him with a powerful elbow strike to his neck. Her body then twisted towards him, her long, straight hair dancing around her form as she lashed out with her opposite arm, intent on slamming into the Saiyan youth with her dagger-chop strike towards the back of his head. If he could not avoid such an obvious ploy to incapacitate him early, he was surely not fit to be in the Empire’s military—but she had to ensure he knew the basics anyway, to see if he had truly learned something while training under hers or others’ tutelage. All the while she was silent, her eyes carefully watching how his body moved and reacted—she was not necessarily looking for weaknesses in his style, but rather, looking for the aforementioned fundamentals. She refused to allow a warrior to enter the ranks of the military if they were not properly instructed on combat. WC: 657 ========

Gohan nearly knelt over breathless when he saw who belonged to that voice. Immediately blood began to flock to his cheeks and his eyes lowered when the realization that his opponent was a woman came to him- was he allowed to hit a woman? Was this just one big test, to see if he had honor and pride? That was always a big thing here, and the man in charge would love to see Gohan flunked for a technicality. Still, the way she spoke with such unwavering authority in her voice told him that this may have been the real deal.
The young Saiyan sheepishly nodded in acknowledgement and respect, but was too nervous to utter any actual words. She spoke more, revealing what he already knew- this was to test him, and to see if he was worthy of joining the ranks. This was his only opportunity to leave Vegeta and to see the universe.... and maybe if he was good enough, he'd be able to train on Valhalla and become a Saiyan Vanguard! Of course, these were just the silly aspirations of a child. For now, there was only one task: trying to see if this was real or not. A warning flashed across his mind like a bolt of lighting, but Cress was quicker than Gohan had expected. Before his mind could transmit the signal to get the heck out of there, pain shot throughout his entire body. One second later, the Saiyan found himself rubbing his chin with not a frown, but a smile. "You're fast," he admitted. The kick didn't even hurt all that bad, and without a scouter, Gohan assumed her power level was very low. The possibility of his opponent holding back didn't even occur to him! Cress threw a fist at the Saiyan, who responded by nonchalantly catching it in his hand. Of course this punch carried much more force with it than the previous kick, allowing Cress the perfect opportunity for another attack to connect. More punches slammed into the young Saiyan's body, causing more pain to spread across his entire figure. His smile turned into a scowl, and just as another attack came, he decided he had taken enough and ducked, evading the assault completely. Luckily she had aimed at a high point of his body, or else that maneuver likely wouldn't have worked. Again the woman came, and again he weaved his way underneath her arm, placing him underneath her- the benefit of being smaller, he guessed. Gohan stretched his arms out and placed them to his foe's stomach, careful not to touch her breasts, and used his knees to hopefully throw her a few feet away. Without a second to think, this match would surely be over before it even began! Dust filled the air due to all of the sudden movement, and the arena was silent. Finally Gohan had a moment to collect his thoughts and form a rudimentary game plan... whatever happened, he had to distance himself between this graceful warrior. "You said you were a Scholar?" he suddenly asked, the nervousness in his aura fading. "After this is over, I wouldn't mind hearing stories from you, if it's all the same. But until then..." his voice trailed off. "Until then, you're still my enemy!" Gohan locked onto his target and tore his fist through the air, sending a respectable ball of energy out of his closed hand.

His forceful push to throw her a few feet was only a temporary reprieve, it seemed. Before landing upon the ground, she tucked in her legs, rolling onto her back with the force of the throw before nimbly coming back to her feet, as if the throw had been nothing more than a drill for her. She had been thrown around often enough as a youth to know how to roll with the attack, though his strength was much higher than she had guessed. Perhaps he had some power to him after all… At that moment, she noticed his face filled slightly with red, as if embarrassed to be facing off against a woman, perhaps. Or perhaps there was something else on his mind. An eyebrow arched up in suspicion, but the glimpse was only enough for her to notice it before he lashed out with an energy attack, a ball of energy closing in on her. She let out a scoff, raising a hand towards the projectile. When it impacted against her hand, the muscles in her arms bulged slightly, her other hand bracing the one blocking the attack. A small explosion erupted, sending more dust in all directions, but not enough to obscure that she was still standing, small puffs of steam rising from her armored hand. “I hope that is not your best attack, youngling,” she said, practically ignoring his comment about telling him a story. He should not be entertaining thoughts like that while in a battle, after all. Especially if he seemed so flustered about battling against a woman. She contemplating stripping off her armor right then and there, more to teach him the lesson about paying no heed to what an opponent wore—if anything—but she decided against it. This was not the time for lessons, but rather, the time for testing. So far, he seemed to possess at least the basics in combat, but he did not seem all that… motivated to utilize them. Instead, a bit more irritation showed on her expression as she leveled a hand towards him. “You had best take this battle a lot more seriously! Let me show you how it’s done!” She said before firing off a beam of golden energy towards the youth—significantly more powerful than the one that he used against her. Once her beam was finished, she rushed towards him, regardless of the success of her attack, and lashed out with one of her fists towards his torso, more to disorient him as she turned in place, her tail lashing out towards his jawline before she followed up the attack with a far more powerful kick than previous! She wanted a fight? Fine. Gohan pushed both arms in front of his body and caught the incoming missile, similar to how Cress caught his own attack. However, instead of blocking the momentum of the beam, he instead accelerated it by spinning in a complete circle. The ions began to separate under the sudden burst in speed, diffusing across the artificial centrifugal force. Golden sparks rained down from above and coated Gohan's skin. "Maybe I'll be the one to show you a thing or two," the young Saiyan tried to spit out with as much suave as possible. Instead it sounded more like "Moarmphgah!" Gohan doubled over in pain, trying his best to snicker at Cress's attempt to hurt him. Even though it succeeded, of course, it was part of his plan. His very painful plan, sure, but the fact that he could even form a plan under all this pressure was something to be proud of; not bad for a kid rejected from the Saiyan training program. A hairy banana interrupted his train of thought, but only for a second, as Cress decided to kick Gohan until his guts imploded. Surely, by now she had noticed why he made no attempt to dodge these strikes. "Not every technique is meant to kill someone ya know," he pointed out in reference to his flame shield. The embers surrounding it were beginning to fade, but it would last for at least one or two good attacks. And that's all the opening he needed. "But...." he began, regaining his composure. A blue light began to flicker on and off inside of his closed hand, and Gohan's tail began to sway back and forth playfully. "The ones that are meant to kill somebody are the funnest! With no room for error, with your opponent's life on the line, the look in their eye tells you if they're going to find a way out, or die. And if they do find a way out, then it's your turn to outwit them again! It really is like a game of cards, and I'm great at cards." The beam finally had enough substance, the blue light begging to escape through the cracks in his hands, but Gohan wouldn't allow it to escape. Not yet anyway. With a sudden burst of speed he zoomed around Cress and once at her side, before he found himself behind her, the Saiyan released his proud beam- a beam that was stronger than her last one. No doubt she'd find a way to deal with it, though. She was clever. Gohan had just fired it out of spite, and to buy some time for the real trick. Soon the palms of both his hands lit up with a golden hue, and dozens of compact balls fired into the sky. Gohan didn't stop until the entire arena was littered with these miniscule energy blasts- and the peculiar thing was that they didn't move. They simply hovered in midair as if they were fully sentient beings, stalking their prey. The Saiyan's hand was still raised. "If you move," he suddenly called out to Cress, "They hit you." Kakarot's favorite son (sorry Goten) was panting at this point, but it was worth it to look into his foe's eyes and see what she would do.

The pursuit of knowledge was not necessarily an interesting one. The more you learned, the more repetitive nonsense you had to wade through in order to truly discover something new. More and more, you had to see the same things again and again in order to truly pick out a new pattern, a new clue, or a new fact. Much like training, the mind only grew sharper the more one utilized it, and she liked to think she used hers quite a bit. The situation before her was an interesting one—his opening attack a powerful energy wave headed straight towards her. She had not seen such a brilliant, blue beam like that before, obviously lending to the boy’s natural talent and power in regards to combat. His movements were similarly quite potent impressive as well, his speed something she had not been expecting. Perhaps she had underestimated him, but she was prepared nevertheless. The beam rushed for her, forcing her to curl her right hand into a fist, lashing out towards the once it was close enough. He fist crossed her abdomen, impacting the force of the beam as strong as she could, knocking it in a direction opposite to her—over the boy’s head—and off into the sky where it would eventually dissipate. Her hands throbbed with pain, her eyes dilating for a brief moment, as she silently coped with the pain. The regular flex of her fingers were the only other sign that the attack had been more powerful than she had expected, her mouth curling into a smirk. Now she was bringing out that potential in him—she had just needed a reason to make him care enough to use it. With the proper motivation, she could turn many students into brave warriors, so there was hope for him yet. She was about to speak until he leaped into action once again, miniscule bulbs of energy surrounding the air around her. Her eyes narrowed in thought and concentration, looking at the hovering orbs as if trying to examine how they would attack. By the looks of things, it seemed like he could still control them at this distance, bringing all that energy onto a singular target, causing an explosion of ki. Another technique she had never seen before—overly flashy and required a lot of time to use, but she could not help but admire it. How crafty of him. “Oh, please,” she said, sneering towards him. “Don’t hold back on my account,” she said. She then made her move, spreading her arms out to each side of her, the air around her rippling for a moment, as if distorted, before hardening in a translucent shell. She would test her power against his, just to see how far the both of them could go. Exciting! He was interesting her by the moment, utilizing such powers as he had—more to figure out how they worked than anything else. Regardless, the orbs rushed towards her, spurned on by her movement. The orb of energy surrounding her began to soak up the impact, the first series of blasts against the shield warded off easily, though sweat started to drip down the side of her face, her smirk never leaving her expression. Regardless of the rigidity of her technique, it still required concentration and discipline to maintain—something she at least had over him. However, the punishing barrage continued, forcing her to keep up her focus on the shield—but once again, she underestimated his power, a few of the orbs crashing against her flesh as they managed to pierce through her shield. She grunted in pain, barely letting any kind of sound from her lips as she stood rigid, refusing to let the increasing pain of the leaked attacks force her down. Smoke and dust was thrown in all direction as she defended against his punishing barrage, and when it was over, only a cloud remained of where she was. Obscured by the dust, her only recourse was to stretch out her senses and find his location—using his power level as her anchor. Rather than wait for the smoke to clear, she leaped up into the air, one palm stretched outwards to him as an blast of energy gathered therein. “Impressive!” She declared, obviously impressed with his capabilities. “Try this one on for size, then!” She said, unleashing the blast towards the pupil, wishing to see how he dealt with this particular attack as well! RP Award goes to Cress. But just barely. This is some stupendous writing you two. The character development and interaction is really strong and the roleplaying of techniques/defenses is very impressive. Keep up the good work. |

Gohan stared at the ball of energy, which seemed to increase in size the closer it came. Or perhaps that was just the Saiyan's nervousness. Unlike the previous technique he had used to diffuse the attack, the one he had in mind this time required a larger amount of Ki used in the aforementioned attack. And that meant the attack had to be stronger- bigger- capable of incapacitating or even killing its target. Given that precaution, none of Gohan's friends would ever help him test it. "Well, it's too late to back down now," he silently noted. Gohan placed his left foot behind his right and dug both into the soil for support. The trademark Big Bang Attack made contact and immediately burned through the first layer of his flesh, but his stance didn't waiver. One inch... two inches.... now three inches deep into the ground, his feet began to stop moving. The sphere or Cress's Ki had run out of steam, and now it belonged to Gohan. Slowly but surely it began to shrink in size until it was no bigger than a bean.... and, like a bean, Gohan tossed it into his mouth and ate it. "Got anything else?" he asked in a condescending tone. "I'm still hungry." Granted, his opponent wasn't defeated yet, so he should have been attacking. But as he held the upper hand, there was nothing more to prove. And so he waited to see if the tides would change.

Normally, she would be quite irritated by his lack of offense during such a battle, but as he took the sheer ferocity of her attack, barely a scratch upon his person, she held nothing but a pleased smirk upon her features. He had proven his strength in this test of trials, fearlessly facing against adversity while proving his Saiyan heritage and combat prowess. To say she was impressed was not quite spot on—she was satisfied that he knew what it meant to be a Saiyan, that he was powerful enough to prove his worth to the Empire—but she was not disappointed either. In a way, she remarked upon his abilities, and only if he had been older and of higher rank—or possessed a rank at all—she might have entertained him more as a guest to her quarters. She let out a low chuckle, barely audible as she descended from on high. Her knee-high boots touched upon the dirt that was their judge, nodding towards the Saiyan in approval. “You have shown me your strength and capabilities, young one,” she said, her voice wavering just a bare hint at her lament to his young age. Surely, he would not have the… skill… to entertain her in other ways. “You have earned your rank of Third Class within the Saiyan Empire. Bear your rank with pride, for yours marks a transition from a mere child to an adult and warrior of our great tradition,” she said before picking up her cloak and throwing it around her shoulders, once again taking on the mantle of her station. “Maybe I will regale you with a tale or two in the future—but for now, see to the one that put you up to this trial. View him no longer as your superior, but now as your equal. Do with that as you will,” she said, a knowing smirk upon her features. She knew how hard the handlers were upon the trainees, and if the boy wished revenge against him, so be it. That was the Saiyan way. WC: 353

Gohan noticed a small, golden coin on the ground after Cress had left. He looked at it, looked at her, and then looked around to make sure nobody was looking. Of course a few were gazing at him, but he didn't really care. With as much finesse as a gay, drunk donkey, Gohan picked up the coin and slid it into his pocket, walking away shortly after with the biggest grin.
