The Fool of ADBZ

"Evening, Jean," a tall, older Avalanian man said as he walked into the guard office. Another Avalanian sitting at the desk looked away from the monitor and up to the newcomer at the mention of his name. With a smile, he gratefully took the coffee the man held forth. "Evening, Aiden. Thanks for the coffee, I need it. This duty is just so damned boring," Jean replied, taking a sip from the still steaming coffee and wincing at the heat. He put it down on the desk and continued to stare at the single prisoner he was tasked to watch over. Aiden came further in and sat down in the chair next to his friend, looking at the screen. "Well, I'll be damned, he hasn't moved all day, has he?" he asked, looking at the motionless prisoner. Jean snorted in laughter. "No, he hasn't. In fact, the bastard may as well be a statue for all the life I've seen out of him. I'm beginning to wonder if all the worry and stories are even true about the guy," he stated, leaning back in the chair. Next to him, Aiden leaned back as well, sighing loudly. "Yup, and we were soooo excited to get this duty. You'd think we'd get something to look at, maybe even a story or two. But no, he just sits there, meditating. Big war hero my ass," and with that stated, he let out another sigh, eliciting another snort of laughter from his partner. Suddenly, though, a voice came over the radio installed next to the monitor. "Officer Havermere, this is Warden Blackrock. We are coming down." Jean raised an eyebrow and quickly picked up the radio's speaker. "This is Officer Havermere, thank you for the warning," he replied. He looked over at Aiden, and the man shrugged. "I guess they finally reached a verdict." Jean stood up, took another sip of the coffee and exited the office. Already, he could see the middle-aged Warden and two Master Paladins on the other side of the two jail doors. He slid a card key on his side and touched his hand to a pad at the same time as the Warden, allowing the trio to enter into their section of the cell block. "Anything happen, Havermere?" the Warden asked, returning the quick salute Jean gave him. "Nope. Prisoner's done nothing, literally. Not even a spike of power level from waking up or going to sleep," he replied, walking with the Warden into the office as the two Master Paladins took up position in the hallway, facing the thick, black metal door. "Still? It's been four days, and you're telling me he still hasn't moved?" Blackrock questioned, looking at the monitor. Aiden sat up straight and waved leisurely at his old friend, eliciting a raised eyebrow from the Warden. Ignoring the older guard, he looked again at Jean. "Yeah, and we've checked the camera feed and regularly checked up on him. He seriously doesn't move," the guard said. "Well, doesn't matter. The verdict was reached today, and it is time." Nodding at Aiden finally, Warden Blackrock walked out of the office and straight to the black metal door with the two Paladins. Using the master key card he held, he opened it up, shining light into the dark cell. Within, a single prisoner sat cross-legged on the ground. Slowly, the alien's dark green eyes opened and looked up at the three men. "Are you ready for your execution, Tapion?" ------------------------------------------- Word Count: 582 Word of Tapion: 582 |

-------------------------------- Six months prior -------------------------------- "So, where are we heading next, Tapion?" Tier asked from the navigation chair as she lounged in it. Nearby, Zariel looked at her with a raised eyebrow before looking up at Tapion expectantly. "We're going to Avalon," he stated in a succinct manner. Both of them looked rather surprised. The duo looked at each other before Zariel turned back to the man they had started calling a friend. "Tapion, why there? They're the ones that issued that bounty for you and have been generally showing you as a villain akin to the Cosmic Empire. What could possibly be on Avalon that'd attract you?" the Avalanian asked, worry for the alien's sanity showing itself in his tone. Tier nodded in agreement, her face showing the same concern. "My brother was charged with crimes against the peoples of the Protectorate, and my actions on Damaskia and Earth have earned me intense pressure to give myself up from the last three empires that had some inkling of trust towards me. This is the longest I have been active in the galaxy in centuries. Last time I was this active, the Great Saiyan Empire collapsed," the ashen warrior said quietly, his eyes receiving both of theirs with a soft smile. "Do not concern yourself over the outcome, I already know what is going to happen. What I need you guys to do is take the radar from my room and go to Avalon quietly. Zariel, you should be fine going anywhere you want, but Tier is going to have to be careful. Something is coming at the end of this year, I can feel it," he continued, staring off into the distance as if seeing something dark rushing towards them. Shaking his head, Tapion turned back to the two again. "So, no matter what happens in the coming months, I need you two to promise me that you won't do anything to save my life. What is going to happen has to, or else the galaxy won't move forward. Do you understand me?" he questioned, his dark green eyes hardening. Tier nodded after a moment, but Zariel was slower to give his assent. He looked away from the lone hero, and mumbled his agreement, loath to say that he would let his friend die. "Good. Now, we're about to enter Avalon's system. Once we do, I need both of you to leave the ship in one of the converted troop carriers and fly down to the surface. You'll have all the codes for the Selenis in your possession for later, but I suggest you plan to not come back to this vessel for months. Go now and get ready," Tapion stated, waving them away to their appointed duties. As the two left, he once again stared out the viewport of the bridge, watching the warp undulating outside. May my fears be unfounded. ------------------------------------------- Word Count: 486 Word of Tapion: 1,068 |

-------------------------------- Present Time -------------------------------- Tapion looked at the Warden with cold green eyes, and the Avalanian shivered. He could swear the alien was looking right through his exterior and into the very depths of his soul. After what seemed like an eternity for the old man, he felt those eyes look away. A sigh revealed that he had been holding his breath the entire time, stuck between fear and some other unknown emotion. There was something frightening about the alien, something off about the way he looked at them. "My apologies, Warden. You are a good man, but the coming months will be trying," he stated as he rose. Immediately, the two Master Paladins came forward and slapped ki manacles onto his wrists and ankles. The room around them was already a dampening field for ki, but once they left, those manacles would be necessary. "You have no place to apologize. Your life is already over, we're just escorting you to the final door," Blackrock stated as he recomposed himself. Motioning for the two Paladins to grab the prisoner, he turned and walked down the hall towards the jail doors. Jean stepped up again, opening the door for the group and saluting the Warden as he left. Slowly, the group moved down the hall, and into the main cell block. All around, prisoners were roaring, screaming for blood. Some of them knew Tapion, knew him for the deeds he had performed throughout the galaxy, and they roared all the louder for his life to end. In the past five years, everything he had done had earned him the enmity of criminals everywhere, the kind that never disappeared. How ironic. Those who obey the law and those who break it, both want my blood spilled, he briefly mused, ignoring the jeers and hatred. They knew his punishment as well as he did, and it was going to be the product of their dreams for months to come. It almost made him laugh, such was the dark humor in it all. Finally, though, the group reached the end of death row, standing before a pair of heavy steel doors. Made to withstand attacks from the powerful, the doors, and the building itself, had been erected just last year in response to the war on the warriors of the galaxy that had happened. The warden looked at the lonely alien, no sympathy in his eyes for what he saw to be the most heinous of criminals. "Here we are. Just beyond these doors, your punishment awaits you, and I hope it takes a very long time," Blackrock stated, hatred in his eyes as dark as the criminals before. For the first time that day, Tapion looked at someone, truly looked at someone, his dark green eyes falling on the old Avalanian. You don't know how prophetic your words are, he thought, watching the warden almost shy away from his gaze. He looked away to the doors as they opened, light spilling in from outside. It was time. ------------------------------------------- Word Count: 507 Word of Tapion: 1,575 |

-------------------------------- Three Months Prior -------------------------------- Tapion sat before the judge and jury that Avalon had appointed to bring him justice. He could tell already that there was no hope. The people on the jury looked upon him with disdain, and the judge was barely hiding his loathing for the alien in the room. Death was in his future, as he had predicted. The only thing he could control was which death and what he said until then. "Tapion of...Konats, you have been charged with numerous heinous crimes and stand trial in this hall of justice for them. Before we begin, how do you plead?" the judge stated, staring at him with those hateful eyes. The ashen warrior stared back, his dark green eyes cool and calm as the ocean of Arieso. "My plea will be given after you ask your inevitable questions, your honor. Avalon will get the answers they are looking for," he stated, eliciting some noise among the gathered crowd. The judge smacked the gavel down, forcing silence as he once again glared at the criminal. "Fair enough, Tapion. We will turn the proceedings over to the Chairman of the Elder Council, Darts Ritn'lien. He will act as the attorney of the state." With that said, a middle-aged Avalanian nobleman rose up. He walked slowly to the floor, knowledgeable in his presence. His eyes, though, were intelligent and full of a vibrant energy not seen in his movement. Darts Ritn'lien was smart, amazingly smart, and it was time to show that more than ever. "Tapion, the Protectorate once harbored you and gave you sanctuary when you had need of it. Yet, you have betrayed the trust our people put in you when revelations were made of your life story. We of the council have questions of you before your verdict is passed. Will you answer all questions honestly?" he stated quietly, but with that hint of authority only found in those who held their power in check. Slowly, Tapion nodded and motioned for the chairman to continue. "Very well. Our first question is simple enough to say, but I imagine the answer is long; what happened in West City?" Darts asked. A moment passed, silent as death, before the accused spoke. "No, Chairman, the answer is not long. I hated. It is as simple as that dark emotion," he answered calmly. "You...hated? That is not a clear answer, Tapion," the chairman replied quickly. "Oh, but it is the most clear of answers. I let my emotions go so very briefly, and the consequence was half of West City and thousands of lives. I had thought myself stronger than that, but what else could you expect from a man bereft of his wife?" he countered, eliciting a slight murmur of surprise from the crowd. No one had known why he had been in West City that day. Could he really have been there for love? How could a monster love, anyways? Those were questions he could hear among the noise. "Silence, please," the Chairman commanded, even if his tone was polite. The room immediately grew quiet. "So, you were there in that complex for your wife? But no other bodies have been found in over a year. How can we believe such a statement?" he continued, staring at the accused with those intelligent eyes. "I have no reason to lie, Chairman. My wife was taken from me more than two and a half years ago by the Changeling known as Chill and murdered by that same man. You saw the remnants of his experiments in that complex, I was finishing what I had begun so long ago," Tapion replied, still as cool and calm as ever, but a fire burned in his dark eyes. "Well then. On we go. Next, we want to know another simple question's answer; how old are you, Tapion?" "My age? Even simpler than the last. I am one thousand and fo-...no, I am one thousand and thirty-nine years old. The passage of time is so confusing to me now, that I forget my age at times. Obviously, I age well," the ashen warrior stated. Many people looked at him with disbelief. No one could live that long except a god or a demon. What manner of creature sat before them? "One thousand and thirty-nine. That is...quite remarkable, if not unbelievable. What proof is there of this?" Darts questioned. "Well, since I can see that I have already damned myself, I'll tell you a little bit of history. Eight hundred and fifty years ago, I appeared on a gas giant from my home world Konats. Still hold a special love for that world. Eight hundred years ago found me watching the rise of the Great Saiyan Empire. Five hundred, I created the Maelstrom, had to fix it recently thanks to an unavoidable crash. Four hundred, a man of ash and fire brought down the Great Saiyan Empire, and that was quite the chaotic few decades. Two hundred, I lead the Damaskians away from Avalon and to their current home. I would have lead them farther away, but pressing issues brought me back into this region of space. Is that satisfactory?" he answered, returning the stare. Avalanians all around looked upon him with even more anger than before. My, they truly hate the Damaskians. I see two hundred years of peace can be ruined by two short wars, he mused, ignoring the hurled insults. Once again, Darts held up a hand, quieting the anger. "Well, I guess we must add another charge; aiding and abedding the Damaskians in their escape from justice," the Chairman stated calmly. Tapion smiled that empty smile. "Oh, it is but a drop in the charges you have placed against me. Now, please, ask your next question, Chairman," he said quietly. "Very well. Tapion, we wish to know what that black demon that appeared on Earth four years ago was. Daison Ramsey seemed to know, but he took the secret to his grave," Darts asked. "That was the Adjudicator, Chairman. It is a monster that you should never cross paths, nor swords, with. Even if you kill it, it will come back, more powerful than before. Don't bother looking for any stories about it, only one culture would know and you're a millennium too late to ask them," he replied. Darts looked at him with a raised eyebrow before continuing. "Only one culture? Who would those be? And what story did they have of the monster?" "The Tuffles, of course. No one else was advanced enough at the time to notice except them. The story is, more or less, the stuff of nightmares. According to them, they detected a massive energy surge in South Galaxy before finding that, over the course of seven years, the ki of the planets changed violently. It followed in the path of the massive energy, and they found that all life was exterminated by that energy. That dark entity you saw on Earth was what they saw and detected, Chairman," Tapion stated, feeling the disbelief of the crowd rise even more. There he was, revealing to all who watched the truth of some of the universe's darkest mysteries, and he could tell that they did not believe him. "Are you really trying to say that one...thing...killed billions upon billions of lives, Tapion? Even with the powers that exist in this galaxy, that is hard to take," the Chairman replied, a hint of disgust in his voice. "I speak but the truth. The Adjudicator is a monster not to be taken lightly, if it should appear again. In fact, war is when it is most likely to arise. Any more questions, Chairman?" the ashen warrior asked again, smiling that empty smile again. "Y...there is more to ask. The council wishes to know what happened to Quon of the Paladin Order on Earth the day West City was destroyed," Darts questioned. "That's easy, Quon died. Ag'nul Zon, a mad god your people sealed away, was resurrected and he killed your Paladin. I have no idea where the mad god went after that, but I'd watch out for that thing," Tapion replied quickly. The Chairman of the Elder Council nodded, finally hearing an answer that was believable. "The last question the council has for you, Tapion, is why? Why did you do all this and why did you turn yourself in? Simply put, why?" The crowd nodded, and the jury and judge leaned forward for the answer. "Chairman and people of Avalon, I turned myself in because what happens in the coming months must happen. A shadow is stretching over this galaxy, but it is not one I could prevent by living and hiding. By coming here, I will have given the galaxy just a couple more months to breath, not much, but something. And why do I act this way? Because old age has made me like this. I have seen so much over the centuries, and caused so much change that I just can't help but interfere. Now, I have but one favor of you before I state my plea," he said, looking around at everyone present. An uproar almost started, but Darts stopped it before it began. "What do you ask?" "I ask that you dismiss the charges you place against my brother. My people were peaceful, and so is he. Their only mar was me, and that came with age and solitude, not genetics. So, with that favor, I plea guilty to all charges against me." The courtroom erupted into a roar at his plea, and the judge was slamming the gavel constantly, trying to restore order. Eventually, Darts was able to get it by raising both hands and he turned expectantly to the judge and jury. Briefly, the judge looked at the jury, who all nodded towards him, and he turned back to the accused. "Tapion, for your crimes against all the peoples of this galaxy, you are hereby found guilty and sentenced to the Wheel three months from today." The courtroom was awash with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow, but the latter was only a faint buzz against the former. ------------------------------------------- Word Count: 1,705 Word of Tapion: 3,280 |

The Fool of ADBZ
|
-------------------------------- Present Time -------------------------------- The doors opened, light flooding in from the bright morning sky outside. Tapion blinked a couple of times before taking his first steps outside since he had let himself be captured almost half a year ago. There, waiting patiently for him, were eight Master Paladins and their leader; Orson Harrowfield. Quickly, they placed four different chains of dark metal onto his body at different locations. They quickly began to glow silver, draining his ki and sealing it to an almost mortal level. Good thing I have no intentions of escaping, he briefly thought as he examined the chains with his peripheral vision. They were strong, probably some alloy of obsidium and steel, and they drained his energy much more efficiently than anything else they had used. The Avalanians had learned from their previous mistakes and successes and were very prepared for what was to come in the next few months. With a slight tug, the ashen warrior was forced to shamble his way forward, surrounded by the powerful Paladins. Step after small step brought him ever closer to his doom, and somewhere deep inside, he felt that twinge of fear. Something so cruel, and it was made only more cruel by his own body. As he stepped onto the platform, he stared at the object before him. The design was like a water wheel, as much as a hurricane was like a summer breeze. Leather straps adorned it, made to hold him to the structure as it turned and spikes sharpened to nano-precision awaited his flesh and muscle. The wood of the Wheel glistened a dark red, much like old blood, and he knew it would drain him of his power with arcane artes as old as him. Such a monstrous contraption had been banned for decades by the Avalanians, but they had brought it back for one more use; to kill him. It was only at that moment that he had gazed upon the instrument of his doom that Tapion noticed the crowds that had gathered. Just like the prisoners inside, the gathered aliens from all over the galaxy cried for his blood. There were some who stood silent, possibly even in mourning for what would come next, but their silence could never have held against such noise. This is how I will die now? To thunderous applause? I wonder if that will keep when they realize how long it will take, the lonely alien thought, looking over the crowd as Orson stepped forward to him. "Tapion of Konats, you have been found guilty of mass murder, mass destruction, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, endangering of civilians, and accessory to all previous charges. You have been found guilty of these charges and hereby sentenced to death by the Wheel. Any last words before your sentence is carried out?" the Paladin leader asked, staring into Tapion's dark green eyes without fear. For a moment, they met wills, finding each other's mettle before Tapion looked away to the crowd. “A lion, a tiger, a dragon, a boar and an ape have awoken and these monsters will destroy each other. Save the people from them, Orson, save as many people as you can,” he stated aloud, save for the last, which he whispered to Orson with the hint of a plea in his voice. The middle-aged Avalanian frowned briefly before nodding. "He has spoken his last words. Let the execution commence." With the words uttered, the Master Paladins came forward and strapped Tapion onto the Wheel. As the last buckle was cinched, another Master Paladin released a lever, lowering the Wheel into the running water below and beginning the turning that would mark his doom. Already, though, he had droplets of red blood from his palms trailing down his bare arms. It was going to be a long week. ------------------------------------------- Word Count: 643 Word of Tapion: 3,923 |
