Hiiragi Labs Dr. Hiiragi had an open briefcase. Little by little he was stacking papers into it. The doctor had a very focused expression upon his face and seemed ready to deal with whatever lied ahead for him that day. As he was preparing his briefcase, one of his researchers came into the office and approached his desk. He had a folder in his hands. “The documents are ready, Dr. Hiiragi.” “Good. Thank you.” He placed the folder into the briefcase. The researcher watched him. In the midst of this, he happened to glance over to the picture on his desk. It was a picture of Dr. Hiiragi with his teenage son, Junior. Dr. Hiiragi was still packing his briefcase. “He’s been gone a long time, sir.” Dr. Hiiragi looked at the picture for a moment, knowing who he was referring to. Yes, Junior had been gone for some time. But isn’t this what he’d have eventually had to deal with if his son were a normal boy? Dr. Hiiragi had a brief daydream of sending Junior off for college at that moment. It wasn’t much different than this. All children eventually leave the nest. This thought allowed him to reassure himself. He nodded and closed his briefcase. The researcher stepped back. Dr. Hiiragi rose off his chair. “Tell me, do you have children?” The researcher stiffened up a bit but nodded. “Yes sir. Two boys.” Dr. Hiiragi started past him for the door. As he passed he said, “Make sure they know of your love every day. Please lock my office when you leave.” “Y-Yes sir!” Dr. Hiiragi exited into the hall and was walking for the elevator. His eyes were intense, not even glancing at the people in the hall walking by him. Although he heard their hellos clear enough! He reached the elevator. It wasn’t a long wait. A female and another man exited the elevator. Two females entered with him. He pushed the button for the lobby. They were in basement level C. After the doors closed, the elevator went up. Dr. Hiiragi stared intensely at the door. The two females in there with him were dressed in white jackets. They worked in the experimental labs themselves. “Doctor, you’re leaving?” “Yes! I’ll be gone for a few days. So you know who is in charge.” “Right. Well I wanted to be sure to let you know our testing is going smoothly and we should expect to have all the issues with the apotoxins ironed out before we start the next phase.” “Very good. Otsukaresama desu!” Dr. Hiiragi had a slight flashback after saying that phrase.
Dr. Hiiragi had a sweat drop and a nervous expression on his face. He went a little too hard there. The elevator stopped. The door opened and Dr. Hiiragi exited the elevator. He started walking for the front entrance and passed the reception desk. The receptionist immediately called out to him. “Have a safe trip, Dr. Hiiragi!” Dr. Hiiragi exited the building while waving at his receptionist. She smiled and watched him leave. As she did, one of the other female workers came up to her, saw her expression and then looked over to the departing Dr. Hiiragi. “You have it bad for him, huh?” The receptionist turned to her, “Don’t you have something to do?” Dr. Hiiragi reached the parking lot and found his car. He placed the briefcase in the passenger seat of his car. Getting in he started the engine. He adjusted the mirrors and sighed. “Long drive to West City. But the fresh air will be worth it.” He was driving some important documentation to West City personally it seemed. As he began to pull out, he didn’t notice a pair of guys in a car a few spots away. As soon as he cleared the parking lot, they began to follow. Dr. Hiiragi proceeded on without awareness of the car following behind. Words: 1,080 |

Outside the city, a man treaded the ground on foot. He was leaving the city. He had a backpack on, wearing a fedora, some cargo pants and a jacket as it was breezy. The man seemed to be talking on his cell phone. The expression on his face was leisurely. He was enjoying the walk. It was a nice enough day for it. But this man seemed to be on a journey. “You should be out here with me, Sandra. The weather is beautiful!” He said. “Victor, you’re really too foot loose sometimes. How are you just going off on a trip for days as you like?” “It’s training for me. After my time in the hospital…” “You should be taking better care of yourself!” Victor was in a bit of a dog house. Sandra being his wife, he was being chastised for packing his bag and walking out of town for a while. But he’d been doing this off and on for a while. He smiled though as he looked at the pendant hanging from his neck. He opened it up, looking at the picture inside of her smiling face. There was another face in the picture. A young blonde haired boy with a big grin on his face: it was his son. The man named Victor smiled and closed the pendant up. “Ok, compromise. I’ll only go to a nearby small town for some training then I’ll be back tomorrow.” “Sigh! I guess it can’t be helped. Just be safe,” “Promise! See you later!” Victor hung up his phone and held up his left arm. The fingers were crossed. Bad boy, Victor. Bad boy! But as he uncrossed them, he reached down and looked at his pendant again. His eyes focused on the boy in the photo. He had a proud expression looking down at his family photo. “Jared…”
“To think he’d become this strong. I can’t sit idly by while he becomes even stronger.” Victor continued down the road. The look of determination on his face was unshakeable. He was eager to keep up with his own son. Words: 1,009 |

Dr. Hiiragi’s car continued down traveling across the city. He was looking for the quickest route to the freeway so he could begin leaving the city limits. A four hour drive would get him to west city. The train was actually longer which would give him an opportunity to rest. But that train had a habit of falling into security issues. At least on the road if he got into trouble he had the freedom to move around. It was a nice day for a drive anyway. Dr. Hiiragi looked over to his passenger seat where his briefcase was. He returned his glance back to the road when suddenly he heard a voice. “Oto-sama!” Dr. Hiiragi looked again at his passenger seat and saw the briefcase. But when he turned to look at the road again, the voice called out to him one more time. He looked over to the seat again and there was Junior 11 years old. It surprised him. He was having a day dream alright. But Junior was sitting there buckled up to the seat looking with wanting eyes. “Oto-sama!”
He was indeed missing his son. This was the fourth flashback he’d had today. He needed to focus on getting to West City. As he made the turn at the next corner, his eyes glanced into the rear view mirror taking notice of a car that made the same turn. A convenient store was up ahead. Dr. Hiiragi pulled his car into the parking lot and parked directly in front of the store. As he did, his eyes shifted up to the top rear view mirror. The car he noticed was pulling into the lot and took a distant parking space. The doctor’s brows shifted down a bit. But he got out of the car anyway and went into the store. He was going to need some snacks for the trip anyway. While rummaging the aisles for what he saw fit, he noticed nobody came into the store in the last few minutes. He walked up to the counter with his couple of sodas, a large bottle of water, 2 boxes of crackers and some beef jerky. He looked at this stuff, silently glad that Junior was not around to see him ordering this junk food. Then he glanced out the window where he could see the car parked. A glare came over his glasses as he noticed that two people, the driver and a passenger, were still in the car. Followed. Not even on the road yet and he had enemies. Quickly paying for his stuff he started for the door. Then he looked at the counter again. He walked over to the man at the counter and had a sly grin on his face. “Excuse me. But I was wondering if you were interested in making a few extra zeni?” Some moments later, the two people in the car found themselves, surrounded by a group of the store’s personnel. Each were holding a bucket and squeegee. “What the hell is this?” went the driver. “You’re our 1,000th person to use this parking lot! As such you’ve earned yourself a free window wash!” “I don’t need my windows cleaned!” Soapy water was sprayed on the front windows suddenly. The driver tried to get out of the car but the man on his side pushed him back into the car. “Please remain in the vehicle! We do not want you to get wet!” “You son of a bitches! I said stop!” One of the other store workers sprayed soapy water on the windows on both sides. Watching the shenanigans from the store, Dr. Hiiragi smiled and handed the cashier an extra 1,000 zeni. “Be sure they all get a fair share. Thanks.” Dr. Hiiragi exited the store, got in his car and hastily lefty the parking lot. Disaster averted for now. Dr. Hiiragi continued on the road at a heightened pace now that he knew someone was attempting to follow him. He was just getting to the street leading to the free way when he suddenly saw the car that was following him come barreling around a corner. It was time to take action. Dr. Hiiragi slammed his foot down on the gas and took off for the freeway. The angry driver had his sights set on catching up to him. He raced up onto the highway ramp and began weaving around the traffic. “Damn it! To think they’d find me this quickly!” The chase took them out of the city. The car had caught up to the point where he began to knock against Dr. Hiiragi’s rear bumper. The doctor continued his valiant efforts to try and stay ahead. But as the chasing vehicle continued to grind against the back of his car, the doctor soon found himself sliding off the road. His car took a sharp crash into a nearby ditch where all movement ceased quickly. Amazingly, Dr. Hiiragi had not lost consciousness. But he couldn’t get the car to move. The men chasing him by now had time to stop their car and start walking out to his. “That was a nice try, Doctor. But I think you underestimated us. You’d be smart to just hand over the briefcase. Maybe you’ll walk away alive now.” Dr. Hiiragi felt shook up. Luckily the airbags popped out. The determined man stepped outside of the car, thinking only of his livelihood and his son. The briefcase stayed inside the car. He faced the two men, both of which had a gun aimed at him now. It figured they’d be armed. He was surprised they didn’t fire at him during the chase. “Hate to say it boys, but you know I can’t just hand this over. Besides, who are you and what do you want with it?” “That’s information you don’t need to know.” Dr. Hiiragi smirked. “Then I don’t see a reason to comply!” Trigger pulled. The man on the left fired a gun shot that missed the doctor’s ear by an inch and hit his car window. Dr. Hiiragi’s smirk clearly disappeared. “Do you have a reason now?” Dr. Hiiragi was clearly in a corner at this point. With his life threatened it seemed like it was time to comply. But as he was getting ready to open the car door and retrieve the briefcase, a rock smacked into the back of the head. The guy on the left had been hit with the rock and was know rubbing the back of his head. Dr. Hiiragi was surprised at first. “What the hell was that?” The gunman on the right turned in time to catch one in the cheek. Standing there was the one who threw it, a man Doctor Hiiragi had never seen before. “I don’t know what’s going on here. But if I learned anything in my travels it’s this: two people holding a gun at one is never good.” Who is this guy? Thought the doctor. Whoever it was, he should thank his lucky stars the man was coming to his aide. He merely waited for things to play out and decide if his rescuer was a friend or foe. Words: 1,309 / 2,389 |

Victor’s walk down the road continued to be leisurely. That is until he heard some kind of metal clanging sound from behind him. The man stopped and turned. He could see two cars in the distance. He quickly noticed how fast they were approaching. “Crazy jerks! They have to be doing well over the speed limit like that. I’m glad my son isn’t a reckless driver. Though I don’t even think he’s old enough to drive yet.” Victor stepped off the road so he wouldn’t become road kill by these speedy cars. But that’s when he heard the metal clashing sound again. Victor’s brows peaked and he became a bit shocked. The cars had just shot past him when the one in front went veering off the road into a ditch with a crash. Victor was shocked to watch the accident happen in front of him. The car behind it stopped instantly. From here, the man knew nothing good could be going on here. The two men in the stopped vehicle came out and he noticed the guns quickly. Victor ran up behind the car and ducked down. He waited for them to go into the ditch. He looked into the car first to see if he could spot signs that these could be undercover cops. “These guys aren’t cops. So I wonder who they are.” He ducked down and crawled around the back of the car. He was within ear shot when he heard one of them speak. “That was a nice try, Doctor. But I think you underestimated us. You’d be smart to just hand over the briefcase. Maybe you’ll walk away alive now.” This sounds like an action movie right now. But they’re definitely not acting. Victor looked around and could see a man had stepped out of the car to face his assailants. “Hate to say it boys, but you know I can’t just hand this over. Besides, who are you and what do you want with it?” “That’s information you don’t need to know.” “Then I don’t see a reason to comply!” Suddenly he heard a gunshot fired and was now stifling a gasp. Luckily the gun shot hadn’t hit the man known as ‘Doctor’. But that was all Victor needed to see. The man reached for two rocks. Now he needed to be swift. “Do you have a reason now?” The man was clearly in a corner at this point. With his life threatened it seemed like it was time to comply. But as he was getting ready to open the car door and retrieve the briefcase, a rock smacked into the back of the head. The guy on the left had been hit with the rock and was know rubbing the back of his head. “What the hell was that?” The gunman on the right turned in time to catch one in the cheek. Standing there was the one who threw it, Victor himself. “I don’t know what’s going on here. But if I learned anything in my travels it’s this: two people holding a gun at one is never good.” “People who stick their noses where they don’t belong also is never good! You’re a dead man!” The one on the right aimed his gun and went to fire. But Victor was swift and jumped into the air to avoid the gun shot. The second gun man fired at him while he was in the air. Victor managed to shift his body in mid air to dodge the bullet. He dropped down on the man who fired first with a drop kick. As he landed out of the kick, Victor scooped up some dirt and stood up quickly. The man who fired at him in the air was trying to take aim when Victor smacked him in the eyes with the dirt clod. Then he rushed the man. Placing his right hand into the man’s torso, the other against his chest, Victor gave the man a hefty toss over the victim’s car. He turned to see the other man reaching for his gun. Victor quickly kicked it out of reach and slammed his elbow down on the gun man’s spine. The man let out a pained yell before Victor picked him up and tossed him over the side of the car. Victor turned to the man he rescued. “Get in the car.” “What?” “I said get in the car!” The man quickly got in the car. “Does it start?” The man tried the keys. Engine fired up perfectly. This was good. “Now I’m gonna push you out. Step on the gas!” “You sure you can do that?” “STEP ON THE GAS AND LET ME PUSH!” Victor hated to be demanding but there was nothing worse than a victim not following orders during a rescue. Victor pushed against the back of the car with his strength while the driver put the car in drive and began turning the wheels. The car began to move so Victor guided it out of the ditch and back on to the road. He looked back. The assailants were barely able to move. Once back on the road, Victor looked at the man who was now sticking his head out. “Ok! Wait there!” Victor went running over to the assailants’ car and pulled the keys out of the ignition. The stupid fools left their keys in the ignition. This was good for them though. Victor took the keys and began running for the rescued man’s car. He hopped into the passenger seat knocking the briefcase off the seat carelessly. “Hey, that briefcase is important!” “Clearly! It’s got people running you off roads and pointing guns at you. You don’t mind if I rough it up a bit, right? Now drive!” The man did as he was told and now they were pulling off again. Victor held the car keys he stole up with a big smile on his face. “I’d like to see them drive their car after us without these! Hehe! People are so stupid these days.” The man breathed a sigh of relief. Victor looked in the rear view to make sure they weren’t being followed. “So, ‘Doctor’, I’m due for a check-up soon. Since I saved you, you mind giving me a discount on the exam fee? I was thinking free is a good price.” He did not appear amused. “So, is you getting guns pointed at a regular thing? If so I’m probably gonna be sticking around with you for a while.” “Who are you?” asked the man. “You can call me Victor. Nice to meet’cha! Do I call you Doctor? Or can I call you ‘Doc’? You know like ‘What’s up, Doc?’ that sorta thing?” “Grr.” “No sense of humor eh? Oh! Beef Jerky!” Victor reached down for the bag of beef jerky in the car when the ‘Doctor’ smacked his hand. “Mine! Anyway, I’m Dr. Fero Hiiragi.” Victor looked surprised. “Hey, I’ve heard your name before! You’re that big shot doctor guy who owns the big building in the middle of downtown where they make miracle drugs that probably don’t work.” “HEY! My research has made scientific breakthroughs for the last ten years!” barked back Dr. Hiiragi. “Easy easy doc! I’m just playing around. Actually because of some of your medical treatments I survived a near death experience from falling off Mt. Kogar. It’s good I get to thank you!” “Glad I could help.” “Now about that beef jerky!” “Get your own.” Words: 1,250 / 2,259 Saga: 4,648 |

Dr. Hiiragi had gained a tag along in the form of this Victor person. So far he’d proven himself to be useful when it counted but mostly annoying. He should probably just get the man to the next town and let him fend for himself. But considering Victor had just easily fended off a pair of mystery assailants, letting him go seemed unwise. “You can call me Victor. Nice to meet’cha! Do I call you Doctor? Or can I call you ‘Doc’? You know like ‘What’s up, Doc?’ that sorta thing?” “Grr.” This guy… thought Dr. Hiiragi. “No sense of humor eh? Oh! Beef Jerky!” Victor reached down for the bag of beef jerky in the car when the ‘Doctor’ smacked his hand. “Mine! Anyway, I’m Dr. Fero Hiiragi.” Victor looked surprised. “Hey, I’ve heard your name before! It’s good I get to thank you!” “Glad I could help.” “Now about that beef jerky!” “Get your own.” Silence had gone on for a few moments before Dr. Hiiragi finally decided to ask more questions. “So you don’t seem to own a car. So what are you doing out here?” Victor shrugged. “Actually I do have a car. My wife uses it. It seemed like a nice day to walk out of town. So I walked out of town.” “And your wife approved of this?” Victor looked at him with an almost childish grin. “Sandra is a very understanding woman.” Dr. Hiiragi sighed. He kept his eyes on the road. “And what about you, Doc? Where are you headed? Someplace important if you almost got gunned down!“ “I’m headed to west city. I have to drop some important research results with the people of Capsule Corp.” That was as much as he was willing to tell this man. “West City? Isn’t that place a war zone these days?” “Yes but some of the stuff I have here is to help rebuild.” Dr. Hiiragi was eager to get there and back to Dokensapato. If people were already chasing after him, it meant there was someone who wanted these papers. About an hour later into the drive, Dr. Hiiragi noticed his fuel tank running low. It seemed he forgot to fuel up entirely. Or perhaps his gas tank had been used up a bit during the chase. Dr. Hiiragi saw a rest stop nearby. It was time for a pit stop. He pulled up to a gas pump and began working on the machine. Seeing as this was going on, Victor decided to get up and stretch his legs. “I’m going to go buy some beef jerky since someone doesn’t want to share,” said Victor. “Knock yourself out. Please, “ Dr. Hiiragi replied. Victor walked off toward the store. Dr. Hiiragi looked down at the meter watching the cost of gas climb while he filled his tank. He sighed and looked back toward Victor. How’d I end up in this mess? “All things considered my life has never been easy to begin with. This is normal compared to that alien world Junior took me to.”
A long way to have come for the two of them! A day didn’t pass where Dr. Hiiragi didn’t at least think of Junior. He wondered about him a great deal. For now there wasn’t anything to do but hope for his return. Click! Dr. Hiiragi noticed the meter had stopped. His tank was full. This was good. Now they could get out of here. Now if only Victor would return. Suddenly he heard the man’s voice from behind. “Surprise!” Dr. Hiiragi turned and saw Victor standing on the other side of the car. “That place is great! Got plenty of water to drink and…” he held up four bags of beef jerky, “plenty of beef jerky! Better conserve yours because I’m not sharing mine if you run out!” “Whatever…” Victor got in the car first and strapped on his safety belt. Dr. Hiiragi was next and started up the car. They pulled off to the road again. GPS was running in case Dr. Hiiragi somehow got lost on this trip he’d taken a dozen times. Victor seemed much more pleasant now that he had his beef jerky. Strangely enough his behavior and mannerisms reminded him of someone he’d run into a while back. He tried to think of it for the time being but couldn’t. Suddenly he noticed Victor looking at a locket of sorts. He had a family picture inside. “Picture of the wife?” Dr. Hiiragi asked. “Yeah and my son. Take a look,” Victor showed him the picture and suddenly he had a flash back.
“Jared!” Victor looked surprised. “You know my boy?” “Not in a manner of speaking but yes. He’s friends with my boy or so he said! He stopped by my apartment looking for him once.” “Wow! Small world! Well if your boy and my boy are friends, I guess we can be friends too! What do ya say, doc?” “I say you got issues. We only just met each other. How can you talk so lightly?” “Hey is that any way to treat your bodyguard?” Victor asked. “Body guard!?” “Yeah you haven’t sent me packing yet! So I must be your body guard! I’m ok with that especially for a friend of my son. But next time I save you, you’re sharing the jerky!” This lousy little…! thought Dr. Hiiragi as he growled. They were headed toward an interstate bridge when suddenly an 18-wheeler came flying off the overhead highway into the traffic. It crashed and forced several cars in front to stop, including Dr. Hiiragi’s car. “What the hell!?” shouted Dr. Hiiragi. It wasn’t long before they could hear screams and yelling outside the car. Dr. Hiiragi could see that Victor’s lighthearted expressions had gone away. The man was now facing the highway with a glare. “Someone drove that thing off the upper highway!” Said Dr. Hiiragi Victor was already grabbing his bags. “Out of the car now!” Dr. Hiiragi grabbed the briefcase and his bags. Then he hopped out of the car. The two men started running for the side, mostly because he was following Victor. They were at the edge of the road when suddenly an explosion went off. The pair went falling off the side of the road as the rush of flames and the shockwaves of the explosion came. The two went rolling down the side of the hill. Dr. Hiiragi felt his head knock against something hard and soon landed on the bottom of the hill, entirely unconscious. His body stopped near the water but only because Victor had managed to balance himself and stop them both. His hand still gripped the briefcase in it. But he lay unconscious now with a bruise on his forehead. Victor looked over to him and saw him knocked out. “Ey doc! Doc, you ok?” There flames were beginning to spread up above and a response team was being radio’d for by highway police. Help would be here soon. But the question of the cause of this disaster quickly picked up. Victor put the bags belonging to both of them in his backpack and attempted to wave help over for them. They had to get back up to the highway with the rest of the public. It was most likely that the cause of this was still around and possibly looking for Dr. Hiiragi at this point Words: 2,629 /5,018 Saga: 7,277 |

I should find plenty of what I want here!” He began to rummage through the shelves, picking out the stuff he wanted. But as he started reaching for the junk, his wife’s voice went off in his head. You need to be taking better care of yourself! He sighed realizing that she was right. Even with all of his training, junk food only got in the way. So for now it was just the jerky and lots of water. He quickly found it all and went to the counter to pay for it. He looked down at his family picture and sighed. For them he should take better care of himself. Plus Jared was off getting stronger. What would he think if he were to come home and find his old man a total fat slob? That fall off Mount Kogar really took it out of him back then. Jared showed some fine courage.
He paid for the food and left the store. Dr. Hiiragi seemed to be finishing up with filling the gas tank. He plopped his hands down on the hood of the car and put on a bit of a grin. “Surprise!” Dr. Hiiragi turned and saw Victor standing on the other side of the car. “That place is great!
