Arch-Curate
As Bebi walked through what seemed to pass as the main street in this little corner of Avalon, his sensors and scanners were working tirelessly in their quest to locate Saiyan biorhythms or any significant power levels. Thus far all he could sense was a bunch of Protectorate losers and a couple of high power levels that were too far away for his sensors to pick up any useful biometric information. In fact, save for the war effort that required a bunch of super warriors to protect it, this town was almost entirely unremarkable. As if to punctuate that thought by rebutting it, Bebi's sensors picked up something that was completely out of place on a desert world. There was a Namekian in a building seventy-five metres ahead of him. A quick glance with his optical scanners confirmed that this was the drinking establishment that he sought to find out more information about this world and the state of things upon it.

Upon entering the bar, Bebi was surprised to note that he fit in perfectly with the motley bunch of aliens in what was apparently a spacer's bar. It made sense; with war efforts going on around the clock there would always be people here after their particular shift ended. He looked up to see the Namekian he had sensed earlier behind the bar. That made more sense than his initial thought. He had been trying to calculate a good reason for a being whose diet consisted solely of water consuming a diuretic substance that would literally draw the moisture from their body. As it turned out, the Namekian was just facilitating the inebriation of those in the bar.

Bebi approached and ordered the first drink he saw. It didn't matter what it was or how deadly the concoction would be to others who consumed it. He didn’t even have a traditional gastrointestinal system. If there was something useful in the drink, it would be absorbed, otherwise it would be evacuated, irrespective of whether it was poison or not. Had he not mistaken Dr My for a Saiyan and butchered him immediately upon his proper awakening, Bebi might had commended the doctor for his work. He wasn’t sure how he had made the mistake, upon reflection: he had executed Dr Myu while the blithering idiot was sobbing on the ground about the insurrection of his "baby". It was the only name that Bebi had ever known and was a useful alias for when the name of his true existence was not appropriate. He had created quite a stirring at the temple when he had arrived, for it was allegedly preordained. He had avoided any unnecessary complications by introducing himself as Bebi rather than “The Resurrected King and Last Great Hope of the Tuffle People”.

Now there was no such need, though there really wasn't a need to introduce himself at all if he really considered it. Once the bartender had brought his drink, Bebi initiated a further conversation.

"I'm looking for some information," he replied in a low voice, trying to indicate a need for discretion.
"I might have something you're looking for; but information costs extra," replied the bartender.
"Money won't be a problem."
"What do you need to know?"
"The war, primarily and the state of play."
"Of course; there's nothing else interesting that happens on this rock except for the occasional debate about policy."
"I've heard rumors about super warriors being hired. Aren't you worried about the Legion looking too closely at what you're doing here and shut you down?"
"The Legion overstretched itself. They'll be lucky if they manage to hold what they've already taken."
"Any word on who has taken an interest?"
"What are you, a cop?"
"No,", replied Bebi, "I have some acquaintances within the community and I thought they might be here."
"You can't be a super, your power level is …" the bartender trailed off for a few moments, "… gone."
Bebi smiled smugly, "which means you should take my word for it lest you do something you will regret later."
"Who are you looking for?"
"Who is there?"
"A couple of paladins."
"Any trouble from them?"
"Not really. I heard tell of a paladin murdering a couple of robots on Namek a few months back, before the Legion revealed itself. Hell, maybe they started the whole thing. But no, nothing here on Avalon."
"So the Paladins are running the show?"
"Seems that way."
"Are they recruiting?"
"What?"
"I'm looking for work. If they're running the show, I want to know if they're recruiting."
"You misunderstand me, friend. The Paladins are the show. There are a couple of ordinary legions and that’s it. Nobody even bothers to complain because they know what happens when the Cosmic Empire takes an interest in you."
"Oh? And what is that?"
"You get dead, sir."
"So is there any work at all."
"Work, no. There might be something for you, if you’re the adventuring sort though."
"I might be. What's the details?"
"One of the bombs set off a chain reaction that revealed an ancient tomb. The archaeological community is up in arms because they want the area preserved and the workers have pulled out because there's some kind of sentinel guarding the place."
“Sounds interesting. How do I get in?”
"Any way you want that doesn't get logged. If you get caught I don't know you."
"I'd better not get caught then."
"Now you're thinking like an Imperial."

The bartender moved to serve someone else in a way that left Bebi under no illusions as to the fact that he was now dismissed to go about his business. Of course his business was their business right now, even if it would never be acknowledged publically. Looking in front of him, Bebi remembered the drink that he had ordered and downed it before exiting the bar and continuing his walk through the streets of Avalon. Judging by the way the sun had moved since he arrived, it was late afternoon. By his reckoning, that left a couple of hours that he could use to explore the place and get ready for the night's activities.

Like any self-respecting government, Avalon had a presence within the town closest to their site that was used for recordkeeping, executive work and public relations. In this situation it also meant that Bebi could find a suitable person to help him sneak in. He needed somebody with clearance to get him close enough to the bottom of the mine that he wouldn't need to pass any checkpoints while he went in search of the sentinel and the Lost tomb. He approached the entrance to the headquarters and proceeded through the automatic doors. As soon as he was inside, the mechanical part of his brain that was always on went to work and hacking into their secure servers. The biotic part continued to propel him towards the reception desk.

"Hi," he began kindly as the receptionist looked up from what she was doing, "is Mr Tomlinson here? I have an appointment."
"If you just take a seat, I will see if he's in."

When the receptionist checked her log, she would see that an appointment was indeed scheduled with Mr Tomlinson, but not for another ten minutes. It seemed to Bebi that ten minutes would be enough to hack into the secure server in order to download a schematic of the mine and to identify the person who would be in charge of lower levels of the mine for the next shift. As it turned out, the security system looked like it had been designed like a five year old and Bebi penetrated it with ease. He located the address of the employee and turned to walk out of the building. The receptionist would no doubt wonder what the hell happened but he felt reasonably sure that stranger things had happened on this planet. It took a few minutes to get to the house of the man in charge.

Rather than jump the guy in his house, Bebi waited outside for him to leave. It would be all too easy to possess his body and ride him past all of the checkpoints into the mind. Once the body was no longer useful, Bebi would leave a temporary guest in the man's brain that would dissolve during his next sleep cycle and make him forget the previous 24 hours. Given what was about to transpire, it would be reasonable to assume that the amnesia was the result of a sentinel busting loose and exploding. Bebi had a secondary plan that involved taking control of it and using it to murder the archaeologists. That might have been a little bit of an overstep on his mandate to make it look like an accident, however.

Ten minutes later, the door opened to reveal Jacen Tranada, the supervisor for the deeper well section of the mine. According to the information that he had stolen from the headquarters, Tranada’s job until the sentinel was gone was to spend his eight hour shift watching cameras and taking periodic seismic scans to make sure the beast wasn’t tunnelling through the walls or escaping through the door. It was the sort of job that didn’t have a direct overseer and meant that Bebi could pretty much have free reign once he got himself down there.

As the deep well overseer went to open his car door, he withdrew his finger in pain. Conveniently the man had just injured himself. It was the only incentive Bebi needed to leave his hiding place. As he sprang towards the open window of the car, he liquefied and slipped easily into the bloodstream of the man. It had been some time since he had done this and every time he did was a reminder as to why he shouldn’t do it again. The blood felt disgusting and navigating through to the man’s brain always took far too long. Bebi sent cells to the man’s optic nerve first in order to monitor how close they were getting to the mine site.

He continued on his way, fighting white blood cells as they tried to expel him from the body like an infection. Eventually he would figure out a way to make himself welcome when he did this but until then it would be a struggle. Bebi much preferred taking over machines. They were logically ordered and generally accepted his influence without much trouble at all. The problem with them was that Bebi needed to stay inside them to maintain control. With biotic subjects he could leave a symbiote that would serve the same purpose. He reached the overseer’s brain as the car pulled in to the car park of the mine and it was in that moment that Bebi took over Tranada’s brain. Several moments later he was in complete control of the man’s body and exiting the car. He moved quickly to the first security checkpoint and scanned himself in without a word. Another piece of information that he had gleaned from the computer system at the headquarters of the company was the security check-in procedures.

Once he was through the first checkpoint he proceeded to the locker rooms and changed into the completely pointless mine uniform that this body would wear for the duration of the shift and beyond. As he was changing, Bebi started forming the symbiote that would remain behind after he exited the body. More quickly than he had expected, Bebi arrived and logged into the computer. He began to monitor the situation within the deep and tried to use the seismic instruments to find where the sentinel was hiding. Several minutes later, the symbiote was finished but Bebi still hadn’t located the gargantuan mechanical monstrosity that was to be the hardest part of the job.

He exited the man’s body and reformed, testing his psychic link to the symbiote and determining that it was functioning optimally. He proceeded forwards towards the link, requesting that the overseer kill the camera feed so that there would be no evidence that he had been here. When he got to the door, he opened it to reveal absolutely nothing. The lights were still functioning, but the sentinel was not waiting just behind the door to ambush him as soon as he arrived as Bebi had been expecting.

Expelling the air from his lungs in a rush, Bebi moved forwards cautiously. Though the lighting was functioning, a lack of cleaning and the dust that was present and coating everything caused the light to become somewhat diffused. As a result, everything had a grainy horror movie feel to it and Bebi could understand why they had closed the area. It was downright creepy down here. Eventually, Bebi found a source of power and use it to trigger the lights.

As the area around him lit up, Bebi was immediately aware that he had received a transmission from whoever the bartender was working for. That was a new feature of which his wasn't immediately aware. Was he perhaps becoming more machine than man? It was something to be analysed but for now he had an objective which was yet to be fulfilled. He wasn’t truly interested in the sentinel, but he was interested in whoever had made it. With Dr Myu dead, there was nobody alive who could upgrade Bebi’s systems. Or so he thought. In what was nothing if not a serendipitous eventuation, there were runes carved into an ancient archway that lead to the tomb. As a being of artifice, Bebi was able to translate it after a few moments. It suggested that this was the exiled home of Archergard, the Master Craftsman. Wondering briefly if he was any relation to Archergard, Bebi crossed the threshold and went in search of the craftsman.

Roughly half an hour later, he reached the cave of the craftsman, but something stayed his hand. There was something inexplicably stopping him from entering the cave. It wasn't a physical barrier; Bebi had already tried throwing rocks into the opening with great success. He had even gone so far as to use instant transmission but whenever he went to use it, he changed his mind.

Something was obviously interacting with his mind in such a way that was making him decide not to enter the cave, but how was it doing it? He eventually decided not to enter the cave, but to walk up close to it and look around the entrance. It was then that he spotted the same glowing runes that had indicated the nature of the tomb. Unfortunately, his pattern matching software wasn't advanced enough to decipher the symbols.

Stuck with no other recourse, Bebi amplified his voice and shouted down into the cave.

"Hey! Archergard! I want to talk to you!"
“Then talk,” replied a voice from the depths of the cave. Bebi tried to use his auditory receptors to pinpoint the location but failed. It seemed that the voice was coming from everywhere.
“I am told that you are a master craftsman. I was hoping to learn from you.”
“You are lying.”
“What?”
“I have watched you for a long time, Bebi. You live to deceive and care for nothing except vengeance. That is why you cannot cross the threshold of my cave.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You exist to satisfy your own hatred. This drives you to dominate. Such a person cannot cross the threshold of my cave.”
“So because I’m not a freaking girl scout, I can’t come in? Come on, I’m not a bad guy.”
“I have taught the evilest of the evil and the best of the good. They sought me to learn. You seek to steal my knowledge.”
“I do want to learn. I’m more than just vengeance. I let a human live last week.”
“What?” Now apparently it was Archergard’s turn to hesitate.
“If I existed only for vengeance, then surely I could not let a person live once they had wronged me?”
“What did he do?”
“I don’t remember, but the point is that I am capable of making the decision not to kill someone.”
“Were that human to be a Saiyan, would you have been so forgiving.”
“The Saiyans killed my people; why would I let them live?”
“The Saiyans didn’t. Some Saiyans did. Those Saiyans are long dead.”
“Their children are still there and my people aren’t.”
“They can be.”
“No they can’t. The Saiyans fucking killed them.”
“I have been around for millennia, my dear cyborg and I have seen a great many things. One of them is a series of seven mystical objects known as dragon balls. Any being who gathers all seven dragon balls will be granted a wish. The planet Earth has been wished back before, why not the planet Plant?”
“Such a thing cannot be possible.”
“It is possible and it has happened before.”
“Are you saying that I can just find a bunch of these mystical objects and wish my people back to life?”
“Yes. It has happened before.”
“That is … interesting news.” Bebi felt the sudden urge to sit down. He walked inside the cave and propped on a stone, overcome by the news. His mechanical side was silent for several long moments before it alerted him to the fact that he was inside the cave instead of waiting outside it. Bebi looked up to see a furry creature with piercing blue eyes staring at him from a shadowy corner.
“Welcome to my home,” replied Archergard simply.
“I expected you to be more humanoid.”
“This form is simpler and allows me to better use my tools.”
“My creator isn’t alive anymore and I find myself at the limits of my potential. I need an upgrade in order to continue growing and learning.”
“I see. I must study your form to determine how I might assist you.”
“How will you do that?”
“You must fight my ultimate android. Come with me.”

As Bebi followed, he tried to calculate the probability of success. It would seem given the words of Archergard that this android would be no easy beat. When coupled with the distraction of the sub-challenge that he had been given to identify what the different runes did for the sentinel. Acutely aware of his surroundings thanks to the automatic, non-organic side of himself, Bebi was aware that this was no ordinary cave. The first indication of this was that the tunnels were far too straight; as though some supernatural force had a hand in carving them into what wasn’t the largest of mountains. It was reasonable to assume that one of the things Archergard had seen over the course of his life was a method for carving his own sanctuary out of nothing.

The tunnel widened slightly before erupting into a larger cavern that was filled with the same bio luminous plants as the burial chamber Bebi had blown up. He recognised that this fact should have filled his biological side with shame, but he did not. Nevertheless, he increased the blood flow to his face in order to cause it to darken. Bebi’s sensors picked up an approving nod from the master craftsman before the latter resumed the dogged pace with which he was walking.

Bebi wasn’t sure why he bothered to deceive the ancient being. Perhaps it was because he still didn’t understand those runes and was anxious to make sure that he didn’t get ejected from the cave before he could come to some sort of realisation. Whatever the reasoning behind it, it appeared that he was nearing the time when he would face the sentinel. As a cyborg being, Bebi had no need for warming up or any other like activity before he commenced a battle. He instead needed to watch and wait for the threat to show itself.

The master craftsman bade Bebi stand in the centre of the cavern and he had to assume that the sentinel would soon appear. His sensors monitoring everything that was going on within the cavern, Bebi was aware of the slow retreat that Archergard was beating towards a small shack at the edge of the space. It was a curious placement for a building. Why did Archergard need a shack with a roof when it was in a space that was not exposed to the elements? The supernatural nature of the formation of these caves also meant that there was a surprisingly small amount of dust around; certainly not enough to suggest the thousands of years of activity that Archergard had claimed earlier.

Bebi’s calculations were interrupted by the arrival of a diffuse energy source. It was definitely in the cavern, but appeared to be all around Bebi instead of concentrated in a single being. Perhaps this was one of the applications of the runes that Archergard spoke of. Rather than relying on his non-visual sensors, Bebi increased his visual acuity as he searched for any sign of his opponent. After a few moments he spotted a sign. It wasn’t much; just a blurred stream of oddly glowing light. Capturing an image; Bebi enhanced it as much as he could and was rewarded with a blurred outline of a glowing rune etched into the shoulder of a small sentinel. It became very obvious at this point that the rune was granting a significant amount of speed to the sentinel.

Bebi powered up and boosted his speed so that he was following the sentinel. When the enhanced metal hulk tried to shift its path, Bebi nudged it into the wall of the cavern with a satisfying crash that loosed several chunks of rock from higher up on the wall. Flashing a guilty-looked smirk in the direction of Archergard’s hut, Bebi stood back in order to see what the master craftsman’s millennia old machine had in store for him next.

The answer to his unvoiced enquiry came in the form of the robot throwing the pile of rocks off itself and standing up. The speed runes had faded and had been superseded by glowing red runes that seemed to represent strength, if the throwing of the rocks was any indication. Bebi’s hypothesis was further proven by the next thing the sentinel did. It reached down and selected one of the biggest rocks and tossed it at Bebi. As it flew through the air, Bebi’s mechanical side was abuzz with calculations. Based on the density of the rock and the speed with which it was travelling, Bebi could catch it without sustaining any damage. He did so and as soon as the intertial energy from the throw had been absorbed, threw it back at the sentinel with all of his considerable might. The already bent sentinel could do nothing to stop itself from being driven back into the wall and it was with no small amount of satisfaction that Bebi turned to regard the shack that held Archergard the Master Craftsman. His sensors picked up a very minute sound that was vaguely reminiscent of an irritated grunt. Such was Bebi’s nature that he regarded it as a great success that he had managed to get a rise out of the creature without getting himself blocked from the cave by the runes again.

Feeling somewhat charitable and curious as to what else the sentinel had to offer, Bebi walked slowly over to the rubble and slid the rock to the side. What met his eyes was a sorry sight indeed. What had been a sentinel with a slightly bend shoulder was now a pathetic piece of humanoid looking metal. Bebi doubted whether or not the thing could even get up, let alone attack him again but he nevertheless kept a keen eye out for any sort of glowing from the multitude of runes covering the body of the sentinel. Judging by these marks, Bebi still had a lot to learn but the ease with which he had beaten the sentinel had shaken his faith in the master craftsman.

“Do not lose faith in my so easy,” said the craftsman, “you see, I was not just testing your body, I was also testing your mind. You did not lose your cool, in spite of the fact that you were lead to believe that you were walking into a situation you might not be able to handle. I will help you achieve your next generation.”
