The Saiyan Inferno
Posted Image

The wind off the ocean seemed to cool the air. Either that or the first hints of fall were beginning to play into the weather, a tease to what was coming in only a couple of weeks. As the breeze nipped at any bare flesh that was out in the open, it found itself pummeled against the stone monument that the Saiyan Inferno had set up many weeks ago. It still looked as vibrant as the day he had crafted it, its surface still maintaining a shine despite the salty air. The waves below lashed against the sand in a monotonous beat, soothing even to the most brutal person.

Monica stood there silently, staring at the rock. Whether she was still reading it or letting the finality of its message hit her full on, Chishan couldn’t tell. He wasn’t going to rush her; it wasn’t every day one got a chance to visit a memorial built to one’s sister.

Apio had come along with them, standing off on the edge of the water out towards the horizon. Even from here, the older saiyan could tell that his younger sibling was not happy about his choice to take the girl on as part of the crew. He had rioted against the idea, demanding that they overturn her to the authorities. And he didn’t mean the measly, mismanaged Earth ones either. No, he wanted her given to the Saiyan Empire for the attempted assassination of the Lightning Lord.

Chishan wasn’t about to do that. Though he had no clear idea what his role in the Empire was now that the war was over, he could only believe that an attempt on the life of a former general would not go over well. In fact, he was sure she would be struck down by the king himself before any chance of a trial could be formed. That’s not the fate he wanted for the younger sister of Matilda. No, he saw much potential in her.

She turned her head slightly to look at him. "Thank you…for this. When I heard about Mattie…I didn’t have time to make a grave for her. I don’t think I would ever have been able to. My world nearly crashed when I realized I would never see her again.” She glanced back at the memorial. "How did you manage to do it?”

He took a couple of steps forward until he was standing beside her, his arms crossed over his chest. She glanced away from the stone and up at him, at his eyes focused on his creation. They were intense but there was softness behind them, like the eye of a storm. “It took a long time. But I had to remember that it wasn’t about burying the dead as much as it was creating a shrine to honor her life. I knew her only for a short time but I still feel closer to her than anyone else in this world. I was ready to give up everything I am now for her, retire to the life of happiness with her as my family.” He sighed; his eyes drifting from the monument to the ground as he struggled to reveal the heart-breaking news to what would have been his sister-in-law.

“She was pregnant when she was taken. She told me earlier that morning. It was Christmas morning and I couldn’t have asked for any better present than that. You would have been an aunt.” He tore his vision away from the spot in the ground and looked to her.

She was stoic, for the most part. Her fists were shaking a bit but her face was as cold as the stone they stood before. She slowly raised her head to meet his gaze. "We have to find who did this to her.”

He waited a moment and then nodded, a confident smile just barely cracking across his lips. It was their combined mission, their ultimate goal now. And he couldn’t help but feel a bit at ease that he was sharing a path with someone who was hurt in the same depths he was. “We will.”

“Are we all set here?” The voice of his brother cracked over the wind. They both turned to look at the man, standing behind them with a sour look on his face. He took the time to look at each one of the individually; an annoyed look at his older brother and a look of judgment towards the human girl.

"You could have a little respect.” She said, her lip twitching.

“I’ve paid my respects to your sister, girl. She was a woman after my own heart; strong-willed, independent and determined. She was the woman my brother deserved. I watched her die along with him and I mourned the same as he.” He glanced at the Saiyan Inferno. “Well, not quite the same. But my point is that the past needs to be left in the past. We can’t learn from it if we don’t rise above it.” His eyes practically drilled holes through the former assassin.

Chishan could see Monica building a retort, ready to drag this argument out further than it needed to go. He put his hand on her shoulder, gripping it. She glanced at it quickly and then looked up at him, as if to question his choice to stand with his brother. But upon feeling a squeeze that was almost too gentle to feel, she let out a breath and dropped the argument.

“We should get back to the ship…”The Saiyan Inferno began, deciding that a new subject was the best way to break the tension in the air.

"And do what? Do we have another mission?” Monica asked, looking at him quizzically.

He shrugged. “Not at all. But I think we could all use some down time.”

Her gaze didn’t change. "What do you mean?”

Both saiyans blinked. Apio’s eyebrow rose. “Don’t know you know to take it easy? Relax? Any of that?”

She shot him a look. "I was an assassin. That isn’t exactly a nine-to-five job. Any period of time I had to myself was spent having to review my past mission, debrief with my superiors and get back to training my skills. About the only time that I wasn’t on the job is when I was sleeping.”

The younger brother scoffed and glanced at his brother. “Remind me never to sign up for the paid killer’s life.”

Once again, he could see that his sibling’s words were going to spark some fury in the blonde. Apio hadn’t liked Monica from the first instant they were introduced and it was quickly becoming apparent that she wasn’t thrilled with his presence either. He rubbed his forehead with his hand as he prepared for the verbal onslaught that surely was coming.

But the argument never came. As soon as her mouth opened, the ground began to tremble. All three of them snapped to attention, looking around the tiny island for a sign to what could be the source of the quaking. The shaking grew more intense by the second, the stone monument vibrating so fast that the writing on it was illegible.

“Where the hell is that coming from?!” Apio yelled, his hands curling into fists.

They were soon answered by the sound of the roaring ocean. All three pairs of eyes turned to the south, where the sea seemed to be caught in a maelstrom. The water was sloshing and whipping into the air as it was sucked down into the funnel, white foam spraying in all directions. As they watched, the whirlpool began to grow wider and wider, tripling its shape and pull in a matter of seconds. It threatened to swallow up the entire island with its girth and might.

But its spread ended almost as quickly as it began, stopping a mere twenty yards from the small piece of land. As from the center of the maelstrom rose a stone pillar. It was ancient; made of sandstone bricks that were cracked and covered in seaweed of the darkest green. More of the structure began to emerge from the watery depths, tall spires and rounded domes breaking the surface. They pulled themselves out fast and furiously, like one trying to save themselves from quicksand. The ancient temple rose taller into the sky, the sunlight bouncing off the wet and shiny surfaces.

All at once the rumbling stopped and the sea-drowned palace had risen completely to the surface, the sound of water running off its walls and roofs echoing like rain.

It was safe to say that the trio was quite bewildered. "What…the actual fuck?” Monica said slowly, her big brown eyes wide as she took in the sight before her.

“Whatever it is, it’s been underwater for years. You can see giant coral growths along its crevices.” Chishan said, taking a small step forward and pointing to said coral reefs. In the light of the day, their bright reds, blues, teals and oranges were as bright as freshly painted art.

“Why did it all of a sudden rise up here and now?” Apio asked.

Its answer came almost immediately on the tail of his words. The waters before the island seemed to part, like a gate opening. A sandstone bridge rose up out of the blue sea as easily as if it had chains on it. It led a path straight to the temple that was at least a mile out from them.

“I think it wants us to come in.” The Lightning Lord said.

The blonde-haired girl looked at him like he had three heads. "Do you make it a point to go into buildings that rose out of the ocean? Because I usually like to avoid supernatural occurrences such as that. I happen to like living.”

The saiyan glanced at her. “If you want to be a part of this team, you have to understand one thing; weird stuff is going to happen, things that you can’t rationalize will happen before your very eyes. Consider this getting your feet wet.” He said, with the pun completely intended.

Her eyes narrowed. "Did you plan this? Is this some sort of sick initiation?”

Apio chuckled. “He’s good but he’s not that good. This is just a lucky happenstance.”

"Lucky. Sure.”

"Either way…” Chishan said, pointing towards the entry way in the distance. “That’s our destination. The rug was rolled out for us. It would be rude to ignore it.” And as he finished speaking, he began to walk forward. Both Monica and Apio held their ground for a moment longer until he reached the bridge and his boots connected with the stone, apparently settling their fears, at least for the moment. They gave each other a look before following after the older saiyan.

The walk to the temple was not a long one, though they moved at a slow pace. The closer they got, the better they could see the etchings and hand-carved statues that covered the walls and roofs. They represented many different creatures from different eras of the Earth. As they passed under the gateway and entered the front terrace, they were found themselves in between two long murals that seemed to span all the way to the entrance of the main building. They dictated the evolution of species, displaying their progression from single-celled organisms to advanced, living creatures. Many of the lines ended after a certain point, cut off by extinction. It was beautiful in an utterly morbid way.

While there were plenty of smaller pavilions and temples, they were noticeably lacking in entryways. There wasn’t even a carving to hint there had ever been a way into them; they simply stood over the path like looming guardians. Other than the edifices, there was only one structure that seemed to be designed for guests. It resembled that of the Roman pantheon, though it was much smaller in size. The columns near its entry-way were worn and cracked, barely standing together on their own. The steps that led up into it had been worn away by the sea, resembling small stony indents rather than defined stairs.

"How old could this place be?” Monica asked, looking up at the tops of the surrounding constructions.

“It has an ancient aura, unlike anything I’ve felt before.” Apio said.

Chishan nodded. “This may be the oldest place I’ve ever been in.” Oldest perhaps but not the creepiest. This felt more like an archeological expedition to ancient Greek ruins than an investigation into a mysterious water palace.

As they climbed the eroded steps, they managed to see inside the confines of the ancient shrine. It seemed to have suffered the most damage over the years, the feet of statues the only remaining sign of the elegant creations. An empty space on the back wall was carved and bumpy, with colored stains on the stone. Multi-colored tiles had once graced it with majesty, a picture of something long forgotten or perhaps never known in this century.

And in the center, a coffin of some sort.

Chishan led the group as they slowly entered the dimly lit temple, all of them focused on the sarcophagus. It was not designed like a pharaoh’s last resting place but its shape and size seemed to tell that it was at least influenced by it. As Monica and Apio stopped near its feet, the Saiyan Inferno walked around it slowly, observing it.

"Everything else in this place is wrecked. But this thing seems to be perfectly intact.”

Chishan nodded as he brushed his hand along its surface. “It’s made of some kind of metal. Base analysis shows that it isn’t anything recorded in this day and age. Some kind of deep ocean mineral…or perhaps deep space.”

The girl’s eyes snapped to him. “You think this thing could be alien?”

Apio answered her. “It’s entirely possible. Ancient Avalonians came to Earth to study its atmosphere and native animal life. Many of their research pods were lost or destroyed. It’s a good chance that this could be a life pod for one of them. Though without any power, I’m sure the person inside has been dead for quite some time.”

The former assassin shook her head. “Ancient Avalonians? You mean there were space-age aliens back when we couldn’t even create fire?”

The elder brother waved his hand. “Not quite that far back but you’re on the right track. Whatever this thing is, it’s cool to the touch and seemingly unpowered. I’m sure the only thing inside now is bones.”

"Gross.”

Apio half-scoffed, half-chuckled. “Coming from an assassin whose nickname was ‘Crossbones’. That’s a riot.”

"It’s not the same thing!” Monica exclaimed, turning to face the younger brother.

“Really? Care to explain the difference?” The saiyan retorted, turning to face her as well.

The Amnesiac Saiyan lost track of their argument as he focused on the coffin in front of him. His scouter was beeping quietly as it attempted to analyze the molecular construction of it. It was complicated and definitely unknown, beyond anything he or perhaps anyone had seen in ages. It was dense, that much was for sure. But perhaps it was also malleable. His thoughts flew to the project in his ship and how he had been searching for a suitable replacement for the android’s outer armor. Whatever the Steel Legion had used was long gone and he didn’t want to layer it in multiple layers of steel either. He wanted it as quick as it had been before. He hummed lightly as he thought about it.

The sound echoed back at him.

It shocked him, his eyes widening a bit. It had come from the sarcophagus. It had been low but the frequency scanner had definitely pinged above the level of the argument right next to him.

“Wait!” He said, cutting them both off mid-sentence. They both whirled on him, their eyes fuming with anger and annoyance.

Before they could complain to him, the sound came again. A slight hum, like someone trying to remember a note to a song. All of them heard it this time and seconds after the sound faded, the temperature of the room dropped nearly ten degrees.

Before they could even speak about it, the top of the coffin exploded open and a shockwave erupted in a circle away from it. It crashed into the trio, sending them sprawling backwards as the ferocious wind tore at their bodies and yanked them away. Their arms naturally came up to cover their faces and allow their eyes to view what exactly was the source of the outrageous storm.

It wasn’t quite right to call the…thing…a man. In truth, it looked more like an elf out of some fantasy story. Its long white ears ran back to the back of its head and came to sharp points, looking more like horns than anything else. His white hair hung down around his eyes, only kept apart by the long pale green hat that hung down behind him like a sad sack. His eyes had no pupils, a pale white that seemed to glow in the shadowed temple. And tribal markings were adhered to his face; a blue triangle painted on his forehead and red splotches that went over his brows. His armor was comprised of the same mineral that had made up the coffin, though it was painted in the same tint as the hair accessory. And held in his left hand, a sword of the strangest form. It was a double helix blade that seemed to wave in the grim darkness.

“It has been ten thousand years and finally Varos the Just has returned.” He said; his voice deep and carrying the same force as the gale winds that he was releasing. He rose out of the coffin and landed on the ground softly, his metal boots clanking against the stone. His unblinking eyes turned slowly to look upon Chishan, the brows dipping just so to convey his displeasure. “I can feel this planet’s filth. I can hear its beauty dying. What have you done to this world, fiend?”

The saiyan met his gaze. “Nothing. I’m one of the people that saved it.”

“SILENCE!” The immortal roared, unleashing a blast of energy-enriched wind that struck the Saiyan Inferno in full force. He winced at it but held his ground, sneering at the being before him.

“You demand questions from me and then order me to be quiet? You’re one hypocritical son of a bitch.” He hissed.

The blade-wielding being cocked its head to the side, as if it were looking upon an insect rather than a warrior. “This one is Varos the Just, deity of righteousness and protector of Gaia. I rise every ten thousand years to survey this paradise, to ensure that it has continued on its destined path to glory. And my honor demands that I remove the unclean that attempt to drag it into darkness. You, unevolved one, are such a fiend. And I shall strike you down with great prejudice.”

Chishan was always ready for a good fight. And even as this deity threatened to wipe him off the planet, he couldn’t help but feel a slight thrill at the idea of fighting something as powerful as this. He would have voiced his eagerness too if the immortal had not taken the upper hand in ending the battle quickly and brutally. It waved its arm across its chest, dragging the sword along with it in a horizontal line. As it did so, tealish-black energy began to swirl around the blade. And then the same energy dispersal appeared at the saiyan’s feet, latching onto his boots and holding him in place. He glanced down at it and tried to wrench himself free, to no avail.

“Son of a-…” Apio yelled, moving to punch the deity. But to his surprise, another shockwave exploded out from the being and sent him crashing into the side wall, shattering stone bits from it. As he attempted to recover from the blast, teeth gnashing and fists shaking, the fractured stone seemed to heal around him. Moments later, he found himself trapped inside the sandstone, his face the only part of him sticking out. He winced and groaned, trying to free himself from the sudden appearance of matter on his limbs and torso. But he was trapped and helpless.

As for Monica, she had never seen something like this before. She had seen powerful people (none more so than Chishan to date) but this deity literally brought her to her knees. She tried to will herself to stand, to fight back and save the saiyan that had spared her life. But it was like all the energy had been sapped out of her and she could do nothing but watch in horror.

“The crushing depths of the ocean shall rid you of this filthy existence. Hasten your path to Hell and be gone, demon!”

As it laid its final damnation on the saiyan, an aqua and black funnel of water began to rise around the Saiyan Inferno. He grunted loudly as he continued to try and free himself from the watery prison that was rising up to crush his body into nothingness. It crawled up his form, past his waist and tail and heading towards his upper chest. His eyes flashed from the surge around him to the being that was sentencing him to death.

“You’re making a mistake! I am none of the things you claim me to be!” He yelled over the roaring of the tide, his arms suddenly sucked into the mini-maelstrom.

For a moment, the immortal’s eyes flickered with something that could be mistaken for curiosity. But the moment passed as quickly as it appeared. “Do not attempt to sway me with your begging. Your sentence is handed out and must be fulfilled. Begone!”

With the final declaration, the entirety of the whirlpool rose up and swallowed the saiyan’s head, taking away any chance of him trying to talk his way out of the trap. Where the saiyan had once stood, there was now an orb of spinning and crushing ocean water.

Varos closed his eyes for a moment and took a breath in, taking pride in his successful judgment. Then his attention turned to the crouched girl and the wall-trapped saiyan. He held out his sword towards them. “All vermin must be purged. For justice.”

Deep in the belly of the watery storm, a glowing pair of eyes suddenly rose to light.

For justice
