The Saiyan Inferno
Awaken Varos’ blade began to shimmer with light again, an early warning to the ferocious attack he was about to inflict upon Monica and Apio. The saiyan in the wall couldn’t do anything to protect himself or the girl and the former assassin was too stunned to even move. Behind the deity, the watery orb that now trapped and was crushing Chishan sloshed and roared like a maelstrom. “Your ends will be swift. Prepare yourselves.” The immortal said coldly, his fingers tightening around the hilt of the double helix blade. Two tiny spots of light began to grow inside the storm behind him, like light bulbs warming up in the night. The ground began to rumble under the remaining trio, as violently as when the temple rose from the depths. But the look in the deity’s eyes told stories to the saiyan and human looking at him. He had no idea what was causing the rift… “What strange power is this?” He questioned, his eyes looking about the temple in wonder. Even Monica and Apio looked around, wondering where the source was. And then the blonde-haired girl saw the eyes in the waters, staring hard at Varos. All of a sudden, bolts of electricity began to spark in the air, manifesting out of nothing. The density of the world around them began to swell and grow, as if gravity had suddenly decided to up its amplitude. The crackling bolts of lightning seemed to grow in intensity, especially around the torrential prison. The immortal’s unseen eyes turned to look at his creation, upon realization of what was happening. “Impossible.” ”I tried to reason with you. I gave you a chance to listen to my words. But you’d rather make assumptions and act the fool. Very well then.” Light, golden light, began to grow inside the prison and the outline of saiyan’s form inside could be seen. His cloak was flapping wildly in the water and his eyes were glowing an eerie red. Apio’s breath held in his throat; he had seen his brother look like this before, when Ruzatz had taken him over the first time they met. Had the saiyan lied to Kami and himself about the demon’s whereabouts? Was that fiend still locked inside of him? With a roar, the Lightning Lord released his energy out in a crushing wave. His arms shot out to either side of him and the curvature of the orb warped and wobbled from the pressure he was releasing. It was too much to handle and seconds later, the water split apart and exploded in all directions, releasing its prisoner. It got everywhere and drenched everyone in the immediate area, including Apio’s face (since it was the only part of him that was not locked in stone). The Saiyan Inferno stood there, broiling in anger and determination. His eyes were no longer red but had returned to their normal look, his emerald eyes glaring hard at his momentary warden. A soft blue haze had begun to filter off of his entire form, becoming a glowing outline for the saiyan. The sword god stared back at him, his eyes narrowed and his focus assured.“Your evil has more power than I first estimated. I will not make the same mistake twice.” The saiyan turned his head slightly and a sly smirk came across his face. ”No…you won’t.” The deity took the threat with a grain of salt, the mere whines of a cocky demon. His arm flew across his chest again, bringing the sword along with it as he prepared to cast the same spell as before. The blade had just begun to glow when he saw, with great surprise, that the saiyan’s image was fading. His senses tingled and he looked above him, watching with great awe as the super saiyan came falling down towards him with his fist out. There was nowhere to run, no time to defend. Varos would be struck for the first time in almost seventy thousand years. The saiyan’s fist crashed against his cheek, driving his head across his shoulders and lifting his body from its standing position. His head was sent into the sandstone floor below, disappearing in the midst of dust and rubble that was flung up from the deity crashing. He traveled a good bit, nearly fifty yards, and left a jagged trench after. He crashed into the wall with a thunderous explosion, nearly shattering the entire thing in the process. In an ironic twist of fate, the crater he had created had loosened the stone around Apio’s left arm. He felt it immediately and with a loud grunt, he wrenched his limb free of the sandstone prison. He crashed his fist into the wall around his neck, fracturing the solid mass and weakening the rest of his bindings. Elbows pressed against the rock, he pushed off and pulled himself out of his own prison, dust and fragments of the pale tan wall hanging on his armor. “You alright?” Chishan asked his brother. “A bit stiff but fine.” He answered moving quickly to his older sibling’s side. The Saiyan Inferno set his eyes down on Monica, who was staring at him wide-eyed and open-mouthed. That was all she could do before the mighty show that had just performed in front of her. She had lost hope in that moment, where the Saiyan Inferno had been swallowed up by the awakened being’s power. But her shock was even greater now. He had not only survived but he was practically unscathed. “Monica, is everything alright?” He was asking, his mouth moving though her ears seemed to be deafened. She shook her head gently, clearing away the shock and awe. He bent forward, his hand extending down to her. She looked at it, surprised. In all her times working with partners, she had no experience of camaraderie. The general feeling among the elite assassins in the organization was that if there was one less comrade, the better the payout to you. Many had left their team to die so they could escape and rake in the prizes that the organization handed down. It was cruel, cold and hardening; the truest lesson in separation. And she had honestly believed that the saiyans, being the most brutal warriors of the galaxy, felt the same way. The strong survive, the weak will die. They all hated weakness and cowering was the lowest form of weakness. But here he was, offering his hand and wanting to help her. What was she to do but take it and let him help her up? "Thanks. I’m fine. Just…a bit shaken up.” She muttered, looking towards the crater in the wall. "Did you…?” “No.” He stated simply, matching her gaze to the resting place of the deity. “He’s still there. And something tells me he is going to come back angrier than before.” Apio sniffed. “So what’s the plan? Overwhelm him three against one?” The older saiyan shook his head. “That won’t work either. His power is massive, probably one of the strongest beings I’ve ever met. I don’t even stand a chance against him. But I may be able to hold him back while you two contact the Night Fury and try and get out of here.” Both of them snapped their heads to look at him. "You want us to run while you sacrifice yourself?!” “That ain’t happening, Chish. If he’s truly as strong as you say he is, you’ll need all the help you can get.” Apio responded in kind. “This isn’t a fight we can survive, together or solo. But we can limit our losses if you two escape.” Monica slashed her arm across her chest and her eyes seemed to speak volumes to her anger. "Not a chance, saiyan. You brought me on because you said I had potential. I’d be wasting that if I let you die so soon after that. No, I’m staying here and fighting beside you. To hell with surviving the fight, we’ll beat his ass into the ground.” The younger saiyan brother couldn’t help but grin. “Couldn’t have said it better myself.” Chishan looked between the two of them, resolved to fight beside him despite the overwhelming force that would surely be coming their way in moments. But even as he prepared to yell at them once more, he couldn’t help but think back to the plenty of times he had refused to retreat in the face of danger. He always stuck by his friends and his team, no matter the cost. He shook his head at them…but he was smiling as he did so. “Fine then. I’ve beaten impossible odds before. I might as well make it a theme.” His two partners nodded and they all formed up next to one another, taking fighting stances. They all focused on the caved-in wall, waiting in quiet concentration until the being returned. And return it did, seemingly phasing through the wall like it never even existed. The deity was still gripping its sword as it marched to a stop ten yards in front of them, staring at the combined forces before him. On his right cheek there was still a scuff mark where the saiyan had hit, already beginning to bruise. Who knew that gods could bruise? “You all stand together now. Foolish and futile. The power of justice is stronger than the darkness and I will erase you from existence for your arrogance.” He said, his voice unfeeling despite the insult that still marked his face. Never had Varos been touched by an unholy creature, only defeated in battle by his more powerful brethren. One would think he would be seething, like a human that was bitten by an ant. “I hope you have some stronger magic than that last spell. While I’ll never say no to a shower, salt water isn’t great for the scalp.” Chishan said, smirking like a sly dog. Varos did not find the joke funny. “Prepare yourself.” "No, prepare yourself!” Monica screamed as her hands came up. Facing out from her on the same level, she unleashed a brilliant salmon colored beam that lit up the entire room. It burst through the air with great purpose, aiming straight for the immortal’s chest. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t move. He didn’t even seem to breathe. He waited patiently for the beam to come towards him, his vision becoming swallowed up the entirety of the energy wave. Then, seconds before it would have connected, he brought his sword up and touched the head of the attack while sweeping his arm across. The beam seemed to shudder before surging off to the side, deflected as easily as one would slide curtains to the side. The pink beam surged up towards the ceiling and the deity’s eyes began to refocus on the group… Except they were all moving! As the beam cleared his path of vision, he was surprised when the same saiyan that had struck him before was already in front of him, his arm cocked back with a wicked punch. It unhinged and flung forward, crashing into his forehead. The deity winced, feeling tendrils of pain run through his skull. Oh how long it had been since it had truly felt pain. It couldn’t help but stumble backwards. The other saiyan was there, following after his brother’s attack. His leg came sweeping in a wide arc, connecting with the side of the deity’s head. His neck twisted something horrible, a grunt escaping his gritted teeth. Seventy thousand years and he had already been struck three times! As he continued to stumble, he felt a hard presence behind him. A sweeping leg that hooked around his own left leg and pulled back on it, taking away his sense of balance. His eyes went wide as he fell backwards through the air, catching a glimpse of the golden-haired creature that had gotten behind him and surprised him. This was outrageous! He hit the ground hard, the solid floor driving the wind out of his lungs. His hand curled around his blade tighter, furious and prepared to unleash all the punishment he could on these miscreants. But as he prepared to move, a bright blue light suddenly took up his vision. He looked straight up and above him was the saiyan Chishan, his arms already thrusting forward to unleash the powerful Kamehameha wave. The beam struck the immortal right in the chest and dissolved the ground behind him, flinging him down into the depths of the ocean while stuck on the head of the saiyan’s attack. But the Lightning Lord was not finished! He had already put all his faith in the Kamehameha wave wiping out an enemy this week, he wasn’t about to make the same mistake again. He instantly transmitted himself just below the trapped deity, his eyes looking up through the darkening waters. With a burst of energy he rocketed himself up to meet the back of the surprised being, his hand grabbing the back of his head. And with his current velocity, he literally pushed the immortal through the thin layer of energy on the head of the Kamehameha and thrust him deep into the surging hot ki below. He kept his hand clutching the man’s head as he continued to climb towards the surface, dragging the being through the heart of his energy attack. As they both came surging out of the other side of the teal beam, the deity roared. Underneath the water it just sounded like very loud blubbering but it still carried the tone of anger through the liquid. With a pulse of energy, he released himself from the Saiyan Inferno and turned his gaze on him, teeth gnashing. He exploded forward, literally creating a whirlpool from the force he exerted to get himself going. As he came within proximity of the saiyan, he swung his blade down in an attempt to cleave him in two. Chishan’s arm came up and met the blade, the spikes in his gauntlet latching onto the weapon and pinning it against his metallic gloves. The immortal tried to wrench his weapon free from the steel grip but his sword simply would not budge. And his focus was so centered on moving that that he didn’t see the saiyan’s fist coming up through the water. It crashed into his face once, twice, three times; each time striking the same spot on the opposing cheek than was already injured. The immortal roared again and snaked his hand forward, grabbing his opponent by the throat. Chishan hissed through his teeth, an act that unleashed a volley of bubbles, when his neck was suddenly under grip. He beat the arm holding him with his fist but found the strength in it was surpassing his own. No choice then. He twisted his other arm and freed the blade, bringing his now free arm up to smash into the deity’s nose. It was a surprise and an opening enough for the saiyan to kick off the immortal and free himself from the lethal grip. As they drifted away from one another, Chishan’s right hand took careful aim of the adversary and unleashed another attack, five energy ring quintuplets that spun through the water with deadly accuracy. They latched onto the limbs of Varos and onto his neck, quickly growing in size as they matched the being’s ki wavelength. The combined weight of them seemed to outdo the still surprised immortal and, like a body tied to a stone, he quickly began to sink. He yelled against the water and attempted to wriggle himself free. But he and his weapon sank swiftly into the darkened depths below, the only sign of his decent a line of bubbles. The Saiyan Inferno watched for a few moments longer, his body still tensed in case the being came rushing up at him. But as the seconds continued to tick by, it seemed that Varos had been sent to a watery sleep. Apio and Monica waited near the newly created hole, watching the water slosh around underneath. They had seen some flashes of light and a few bubbles come to the surface but nothing else. Just as the other saiyan prepared to dive in and find out what was going on, Chishan’s form materialized on the other side of the hole. "Did you get him?” The former assassin asked. The Amnesiac Saiyan nodded softly. “It looks like I managed to trap him. He’ll be stuck underwater for a very long time. My energy rings feed off a person’s internal energy; the more you try and use your power to escape, the heavier they get. It’ll be a good long while before-…” He was cut off by a sudden funnel of water exploding out from the hole, like a waterspout. The trio fell back as the continuous fountain of water continued to crash against the ceiling. In the center of the stream was Varos, the energy rings still holding tight to his limbs. The water spout ceased and the deity continued to hover there, seething. “I have underestimated you. You are much stronger than I first anticipated. Take pride in the fact that none have done as much as you have." As he spoke, he gave each one of his limbs a little shake and the glowing rings dissipated like dust on the wind. His free hand reached up and tore the last ring off, crushing in between his fingers as he glared at the one responsible for them. "But my code of honor is final. Your lives are forfeit.” He brought his sword in front of him, holding it completely vertical with his form. “This guy is impossible.” Chishan hissed, falling into a fighting stance again. Already he could feel the energy beginning to build in the room, like the calm before a storm. He had to think of something quick. Chishan. The voice surprised him. He looked around, searching for the source of the ethereal noise. But half a second later he realized that the source of it was inside him. Well, inside the amulet that graced his neck. The Archon hadn’t spoken to him in so long that he had truly forgotten how the ancient being sounded. What is it, Archon? I’m a little bit busy here. You must let me speak with Varos. His brow furrowed. Do you know this guy? And you’ve been letting him try and dismember us this entire time? The matters between gods is not your concern, Chishan. Now open your mind so I can speak through you. No doubt the Archon could feel the saiyan’s frustration. After all the words of encouragement and support, the ancient deity had disappeared for months while the saiyan fought in the war. There were times Chishan called out to him, asking for help and his answers never came. So now after a long time, the being had resurfaced only to speak with a fellow immortal after he had just tried to kill them all. It was fair to say that it was a bit angering. But there didn’t seem to be any other way to avoid a massacre. With a steamed sigh, he allowed the celestial being open passage into his mind. All at once, his eyes became infused with a bluish tint and the azure aura that had surrounded him before grew larger. ”Varos!” He spoke, his voice a mixture of his own and the Archon’s. Almost immediately, the energy that had been growing inside the temple dissipated. The sword moved out of the immortal’s face and his plain eyes stared at the Saiyan Inferno, a look on confusion written across his face. “What sorcery is this?” He asked of the saiyan. ”One that was taught to you when you were much younger. Or have you forgotten your old master?” The combined spirits boomed out, glowing eyes meeting glowing eyes. The voice, the words. Varos knew them well, though they hadn’t touched his ears in nearly a millennium. His sword arm dropped to his side, weakened by the emotional blow that had been dealt to him. “Archonias? How…what…how has this come to pass?” Chishan’s eyes dropped away from his gaze for a moment as the ancient being tried to bring it to words. ”It is a long story, not meant for this moment. But I have revealed myself so you will not hurt my vessel and his friends any more. They are not as you have perceived them.” The immortal was stunned to say the least. His eyes, though lacking pupils, seemed to dart back and forth while processing this sudden revelation. But he seemed to succumb to the knowledge, allowing the sword to drop from his hand and stab itself into the sandstone next to his feet. He looked back to the saiyan. “Archonias, why this one?” The ancient being was quick to answer. ”He is the last of the Teras Kasi.” That news all out shocked Varos, who fell a step back as he stared wide-eyed at the saiyan. Though the Archon was in control of his body, Chishan was still fully aware of his surroundings. And when the being he had just fought literally backpedaled in shock at what he was, he made a note of it. He had known for quite some time that he was one of the last Teras Kasi or Elemental Lords as some called them. The Archon had been the one that had informed of their history and Grand Kai had been the one that had told him. But to see a literal god fall back at the revelation? Well, that made everything a lot more interesting. Varos reaffirmed his position, straightening as he looked upon the group. He bowed his head gently. “My apologies for my brash behavior. My long sleep has hindered my thought process and my aggression was uncalled for. Please accept my deepest apologies to my old master’s friends.” “And, of course, to the newest Avatar of Justice” WC: 3,671 |

The Saiyan Inferno
"The Avatar of Justice?” Monica was the first to break the stunned silence, looking between Varos and Chishan. Apio and the girl had been staring at the Saiyan Inferno with utter surprise almost the entire time, shocked by the sudden change in his voice and nature. While the younger saiyan was aware of the Archon Amulet and the power it gave to Chishan, he had no idea that an ancient being was actually the source of that. And Monica was just learning about it now. The combined spirits of Chishan and Archonias didn’t answer, instead keeping their gaze on the immortal with a bowed head. He, in turn, raised his eyes just enough to look at the girl and saiyan with a face that begged the question. You didn’t know? “Of course, there is no other reason Archonias would imbue his soul in this mortal’s body. He is obviously one of the chosen.” The deity said, matter-of-factly. The Lightning Lord shook his head.”It is not as simple as that. The amulet that hangs around his neck houses my ethereal form. My physical form was destroyed by our enemies long ago, Varos. With my dying breath, I latched onto the closest object and etched my soul onto it. I’ve been housed in here for longer than I can remember. I’ve lent my power to only two beings during that time, two saiyans that were honorable men. Chishan is the most recent.” The swordsman god nodded softly. “I see. Even in death you prove to be a formidable ally to the side of justice.” Varos stepped over to the saiyan and bent in, looking into his eyes. “I may have a spell that will allow you temporary form, Archonias, if you wish to speak with your own voice.” Chishan’s controlled form nodded. ”The Asputesahd Spell. Without proper arms, I could not cast it myself. What luck it was to find you, my pupil.” “Luck?” Apio finally cut in, his brow drooping and his mouth opening into a snarl. “This elfish wannabe tried to send my brother to a watery death and was going to do the same to us!” He barked, furiously. The Archon-controlled Chishan’s eyes moved away from his fellow deity to look at the younger brother, a lack of sympathy in his pupils. ”Then perhaps you should consider yourself lucky you are not a weakling.” And with that statement, he turned his attention back to the immortal in front of him. Varos pulled his glove from his right hand, revealing pale white skin beneath. Gently he brought his hand up and touched the saiyan’s forehead with his middle finger and his ring finger, tucking his index and pinky against his palm. He closed his eyes and began to concentrate, an act that caused the markings on his face to glow. At the same time, the entirety of Chishan’s form became engulfed in a white light. A funnel of energy surrounded the two forms, whipping around at break neck speeds. Monica and Apio could do nothing but watch as the ancient ritual was being completed. Moments later, the air became calm and the energy disappeared from the air. Varos removed his fingers from the saiyan’s head, whose eyes had returned to their normal emerald colors. He glanced around a bit, as if he had just woken from a dream. The sound of a heavy metal object hitting the ground summoned the attention of everyone in the room. Standing outside on the rugged steps of the temple was a new person though he resembled Varos in plenty of ways. He had the same sharp ears and long white hair that flowed out of his long cap. His pupil-less eyes stared up at the group in front of him, eclipsed by red and yellow facial markings. A white cloak wrapped around his shoulders and hung down his back, the collar popped up around his face. His gauntlets were a soft bronze, shining brightly in the sun’s rays. The silver chest plate was layered with the same strange metal as Varos’, covered by two straps crossing over his pectorals. And beheld by his right hand, a long bulky sword was stabbed into the ground. The same double helix formation was wrapped around the guard and stretched up to the bottom of the fuller. ”It has been far too long since I’ve had form. I had forgotten.” Archonias said, taking in a deep breath through his nostrils. “Son of a bitch…” Apio said almost breathlessly. “You were inside the necklace?” The saiyan spoke less about his appearance and more about the gravity of power that had suddenly appeared with the Archon’s form. The younger immortal walked down to the older one and clasped him on the shoulder, an act that was returned promptly. He smiled. “It’s been an age, Archonias. I had forgotten how your presence can calm even the wildest of internal storms.” ”You compliment high, young one. This old celestial has less influence in the galaxy than before. Lest it would not be as it is now.” Varos nodded. “You can feel it too then.” The Archon nodded in turn, his head trailing lazily up to look at the blue sky above. ”Right in my bones. Ancient and new evils run amok in the universe, threatening its peace and balance. There are so few lights of hope in the darkness. My master, long gone now, once told me that such a time would come. But I never thought that I’d be around to see it.” “What exactly are you two talking about?” Chishan finally had spoken again, having regained control of his entire form. He padded down the stairs to the two talking immortals, followed after by Monica and Apio. He stopped right in front of them, his eyes dark and serious. The deities looked at him. The younger one leaned towards his counterpart slightly. “You have chosen a strange vessel, Archonias. He has little respect for our class of gods.” Archonias mused. ”That may be that he does not know what we are. I hadn’t taken the time to inform him.” The Lightning Lord scoffed. “Safe to say my assumptions flew to that when this guy rose from a coffin that had been underwater for tens of thousands of years.” He quipped, nodding towards Varos. “He also said something along the lines of being a ‘deity’. I didn’t believe him at that time; I’ve met a few that have claimed godhood only to be cast down. But once we fought…I’ve met gods and demon-kings before. He felt just like them.” "So you two…you’re actually gods? Immortality and all?” The young assassin spoke up. Archonias nodded and a small smile came to his lips as he looked at the blonde. ”Yes child. But we are no different than humans or saiyans. We are a race that was born out of nature and do eventually die. Immortality is a mirage painted by scholars to explain how beings of great power could exist. When in truth, our genetics allows us to live out extensive lifecycles. But all things that are begin must also end and such is the way of our lives.” "Unreal…” The girl whispered, holding the side of her head. The very fact had made her lightheaded. “And here I thought the three of us could beat you.” Apio quipped, somewhat grumpily. “Your bravado is impressive…but also foolish. Our race spends thousands of years training to increase our power and strength. The blond man has an impressive level of power and even he has barely a prayer if I were to unleash my full capabilities. The simple fact that the three of you were able to catch me off guard is due to my own machismo. You will do well to worship the limbs that have graced this warrior’s face.” Varos spoke harshly, as an emperor would to a subject. The Archon gave his friend a squeeze on the shoulder. ”Calm, Varos. They have never encountered our race before and as such, do not know the respect you demand. I have traveled quite some time with the saiyan Chishan and I know that the simple fact that he did not continue to attack you is him giving you respect. I can only surmise that the same goes for the human Monica and his brother Apio. And while you can chalk it up to your own boldness, the reality of the situation is that they surpassed you in that moment. As a warrior of justice, you should at least honor that.” The younger immortal nodded quickly, hearing the lesson his old master was trying to teach. He turned his attention to the trio and bowed at the hip, his arms glued to his sides. “Forgive me, saiyans Chishan and Apio and human Monica. You fought well and with great might. I have not faced such powerful opponents in many years.” Apio couldn’t help but smirk. “That’s better.” Chishan shot him a look before taking another step forward. “All pleasantries aside I have some questions for both of you. This will be a lot easier to ask out loud than hollow echoes in my head.” He said, shooting a damning look to Archonias. ”I heard your pleas, Chishan, and chose not to answer them for the simple fact that I am not some heavenly power than can always save you. You asked for guidance on any encounter that challenged your emotions and sense of honor. But I remember the man from when we first met. When you grabbed my amulet in the pits of that hell-dimension, I could read your past and your present. In the face of utter destruction that day you found, against rationality and hopelessness, the strength you needed to overcome your obstructions. It was because of that that I chose to stay with, to lend you my power and enhance your strength. I did not choose to become your shining light when you had a crisis of faith. So I stayed silent and allowed you the opportunity to solve your own riddles. It may have taken the friendships around you to build you up again but you found your way back to your rightful path. Without me. Now I hope that is the answer you were seeking for I wish to leave this subject and never speak of it again.” Archonias had prepared his speech for the saiyan, knowing full well that he had been hurt by his actions. While harsh and to the point, it was a simple lesson that parents strive to teach their children; the strength to succeed comes from inside one’s self. Our guardians will not always be there to save us. Sometimes, we have to save ourselves. And the Saiyan Inferno heard his words for what they were. His mouth closed, though it had been prepared to argue with the deity. And with a curt nod, he understood why the Archon had chosen to do what he had. There was no need to criticize him any further than he already had. ”Now. If there are other questions you have, Varos and I will be more than pleased to enlighten you.” "The Avatar of Justice. What is that?” Monica spoke up, repeating the question she had asked minutes ago. “The Avatar of Justice is the embodiment of righteousness. It was a creation by our race as a gift to the smaller, less powerful races in the universe. Every once in a while, there would be few from each species that proved to be more powerful than their brethren. Their pure hearts and sense of justice was so strong that we simply could not ignore them. They became authorities of justice, fated to travel the stars and to fight the darkness that resided in them. It was the highest honor one could receive in their existence, with all the respect and divinity that we ourselves employ.” Varos was quick to answer, reiterating the same thing his masters had told him when he was but a youngling. “So they were basically Galactic Police? Isn’t that what the Avalonian Paladins do?” Apio asked, looking to his brother. ”The paladins of Avalon worship the deity Ganr, who is a god of swordsmanship. While I’ve never personally met the being itself, I believe that many of its teachings are similar to our own. It is fair to say that the paladins may be a modern day version of our Avatars, though they act under a pyramid consortium whilst the Avatars act on their own with the aide of our people.” "What are you people called?” Varos and Archonias shared a look before the elder answered. “To put our race to a name would take quite some time, as it cannot properly be spoke in basic. It could possibly take days to finishing annunciating every syllable.” "Seriously?” ”Seriously.” “Are you the Lost?” Chishan asked, having spent the time listening and pondering the mass amounts of information coming his way. Both of the immortals seemed to darken when he asked, their soft, comforting faces twisting into hardened, almost insulted visages. ”No and you would do well not to mention them in our presence again. Do not ask further questions about them or our connection with them. That subject is forbidden.” The trio looked among themselves silently, obviously wondering what had brought on the hostile answer. As they did so, Archonias looked to his brethren. ”How much longer will the spell last?” “A few more minutes, Archonias. Then you’ll return to the amulet.” “So you guys use magic energy then, right?” Apio asked, genuinely curious. Since their meeting with the sorcerer at New East City, the younger saiyan brother had been wondering about the real differences between magic and ki. Chishan had given him a rudimentary explanation to the differentials in the ionization of the body’s natural energy. Ki was something that was naturally formed in the body while magic energy was a sort of ‘buffer’ that enhanced one’s natural force. “Not in the conventional way you are thinking of, no. Outside magic energy comes from other realms; generally imbued in that realm’s natives. But it can be transferred to items or beings in this dimension via rituals or pacts. Our magic is a creation of our own, naturally forming in our bodies. It is what you now call ‘ki’. Our spells are no different than the energy techniques you use.” “So you train your power the same as we do, by increasing your ki capacity internally.” Chishan noted. Varos nodded. “Precisely. The stronger our core magic is, the stronger our body gets.” He looked around the plaza, at the faceless buildings. “These were our training facilities, where we would fight and meditate on our lessons for years on end.” " “Did these buildings once have doors?” The young immortal shook his head. “These places are merely fabrications of what those training facilities were. In truth, the actual places themselves were on another plane of existence that could only be opened by our people. Ancient forgotten runes would be inscribed on the buildings to give us access to the other realms, where we could meet with our brethren. We relied on those dimensions for everything; housing, training, storage, weapon creation and archiving. Many relics have been lost because the symbols we used have been forgotten. Now the only thing that remains intact is my resting chamber.” “Is that one of the relics? I was wondering what it was made of.” Chishan asked. Archonias mused over the question. ”That is Katchin, the densest element in this universe. Before the universe had expanded too far, the mineral was prominent everywhere. Our species collected large amounts of it to use for construction of buildings and weapons. There was once a large depot stored in our other realm. But the runic patterns to gain access are lost to me. Now it is nearly impossible to find katchin in the natural world. It is both a blessing and a curse. Without it, many constructions will collapse and fail from outside forces. On the other hand, no empire will gain ultimate control over the universe with impregnable weapons of mass destruction.” The Lightning Lord frowned. There went any chance of getting his hands on the material. No doubt Varos would be adamantly against giving him the coffin to use. “You talk about the Avatars in the past tense. What happened to them?” “They were all mortal at first. Many of them died in righteous glory against the enemies in the dark. Others died of old age, having survived their trespasses until the twilight of their life. But a few that fought with all their might and faced the greatest dangers were blessed gifts of immortality such as us. They became gods of their species, symbols of hope and light for many who looked up at them. Eventually they would leave, journey out into the darkness beyond our galaxy in search of greater dangers. All of them were never heard from again. I can only assume they died on their quests or are living out their ancient lives in solitude. It is quite the emotional pain to live beyond your loved ones. Many don’t know how to recover from that.” Both Chishan and Monica seemed to react to that, slight changes in their eyes and a tiny twist in their mouths. They knew what it felt like. The Archon grunted and leaned a bit on his sword, his face wincing in pain. ”My time is short. The spell is wearing off.” Varos looked to his master. “Archonias, what about the saiyan Chishan? You have traveled with him, seen the limits of his soul. There must be a reason you haven’t parted from him. Is he one of the chosen ones? Do you believe he could become an Avatar of Justice?” All eyes turned to the saiyan, who shifted his gaze to meet each one. He finally settled on the white eyes of the Archon, who sighed. ”I never had the honor of being considered a judge over who becomes an Avatar or not. But given what I have seen of him and the code he follows, I’d be willing to bet he could be one. Perhaps even the last one.” “Then why not give him the honor? Let us bestow him with the righteous cause that comes with being an Avatar.” Archonias smiled softly. ”I would if I knew the ceremony. But our rituals are long forgotten, Varos. To become a true Avatar he would need to seek out ancient texts that may not exist. And even then, we’d need one of our people that knows the ritual.” “What if I find texts that tell of the ritual?” Chishan spoke up. Apio and Monica turned to look at him. “Do you want to become one of those Avatars?” His brother asked. The older saiyan ignored him and continued. “What if I track down these texts and find ones that detail how the ceremony is performed? Could you do it then?” The Archon hummed quietly before speaking. ”Do you desire to become an Avatar of Justice, Chishan? Is that your goal?” His brow lowered. “My goal is to bring justice to this world. And I don’t just want myself to be one, I want others to be. If there’s a way we can revive the Avatars, we can create a whole new authority in the galaxy. One that isn’t weighed down by politics but acts according to what is right.” He brought his hand up, enclosed into a tight fist. He couldn’t help but grin. “The universe needs this after the nightmare that was the Steel Legion. We need a force on the side of righteousness. And I plan on bringing it out for everyone that wants to join.” The elder immortal returned the smile. ”Very well then. I shall journey with you in the amulet and assist you in finding our lost rituals. With any luck, there are still alcoves of knowledge that haven’t been found.” He turned to Varos and nodded. ”Farewell, my friend. We shall return when we have found what we’re looking for. Until then, I suggest you get some rest.” The younger deity grinned and rolled his shoulder. “Not a chance. I’ve been sleeping for ten thousand years and got knocked around by these three. Clearly I need to get back to training. I still remember some of the lessons that were taught me and with them I will reawaken my old strength. I shall stay here until you return, Archonias.” The Archon didn’t get a chance to answer; instead his form became a bright light and seemed to fall apart like it had been made of pure essence. Tiny glowing particles soared into the air and floated up into the sky as the once proud and tall form of Archonias faded and his spirit returned to the amulet. The trio said their fare wells to the deity and began to leave. As Chishan was turning away, Varos spoke. “Saiyan Chishan. Archonias mentioned that you are a Teras Kasi. Do you know what that is?” The saiyan turned his head to look at the immortal. “The Teras Kasi were ancient rulers of the galaxy, hell-bent on dominating all of life. The Archon told me that warriors came together to fight them, finally overwhelming them with their numbers. But when the Teras Kasi fell, they poisoned their killers with their power, greatly enhancing them. They became known as Elemental Lords but were eventually hunted down by the forces of darkness.” The deity took a step forward. “True and not. While they did get infected by the Teras Kasi upon their death, it was not a purposeful action. The warriors fed on their kill, hoping to become the very monsters they had defeated. You see, the Teras Kasi also have another effect on mortals. Their very power is like a hunger and it spreads to all those around them. The resistance had honorable intentions when they fought back but their minds were corrupted by the influence. Once all of the Teras Kasi were gone, these newly empowered warriors declared themselves kings and queens of the universe. They labeled themselves Teras Kasi as well, though the term was mutated to mean ‘Terror Incarnate’. They all fought against one another and eventually wiped out each other, save a few. And those ones were hunted down by either rebelling nations or dark cults that desired the power as well.” The saiyan’s brow furrowed. “Why are you telling me this?” “Because Archonias will not. I can tell he has a lot of faith in you and that blinds him to the fact that you have that same infected power in you. I believe he went with you at first because he saw what you were and desired to find a way to destroy you. But he’s seen how you act and realized that you are honor-bound and full of righteous purpose. You swayed him to your side. And I worry that a part of it could be the influence of your Teras Kasi blood.” Chishan couldn’t help but feel insulted. He whirled around and hissed. “You think I’m corrupting him?” Varos’ eyes did not waver. “I am merely being truthful with you. I voice my concern for my friend just as loudly as I know you would in the same situation. And I want you to promise me that you’ll do everything in your power to prevent him from falling under the influence. I do not believe you are doing it at heart, saiyan Chishan. It merely is a curse that is in you. The more power you gain, the more the hunger will grow.” The Lightning Lord was still upset, visibly showing it with his frown and narrowed eyes. But he also understood the position that Varos was in. He was right after all; in the same place, he would be saying the same thing. “I will protect your master, Varos, as if he were my own family.” The deity bowed his head. “I will hold you to your word, saiyan Chishan, and I thank you for it. Perhaps with your finding of the texts, we can find an answer to the riddle of the Teras Kasi’s influence.” Chishan nodded. “Let’s hope so.” And with that, he turned away and began to follow after Monica and Apio. They had stopped nearly half way across the bridge when they realized he hadn’t been with them. As he walked up to them, Monica looked at him quizzically. "Everything all right, Chishan?” She questioned him. He smiled, a fake one. The impact of what Varos had just said to him still weighed heavily on his mind. But he had to be brave and strong. “Yeah, everything’s good.” At least, I hope it is. WC: 4,148 TWC: 8,819 |
