Reason was involved in almost every action that the Kaioshin had taken since he lost his power. He needed to blend in, so he mixed his appearance to look more like an alien and less divine. He needed to gain back skills, so he went training with all the masters of the Universe he could and acquired from them the best techniques that had even been used. He wanted to protect the Universe from itself during the great galactic war, so he spent his time traveling around to leaders of the Empires and fought with everything he had to bring peace and eventually helped defeat the Steel Legion itself and its leader.

It was reason that drove him to do everything he had done since taking on the basic life of a mortal, but as things progressed and his natural divinity began to slowly reveal itself more and more he started to grow concerned. Clearly he was not strong enough to take on the might of whatever Lucifer might have in store for him, but he was also now being hunted for different reasons by one of the more powerful demons that thrive in hell the powerful Storm King Khorramzadeh. It was more of a side effect of the constant meddling he found himself doing with the plans of Lucifer, but now after fighting him off on King Kai’s planet the powerful and deadly beast was now seemingly constantly on the hunt for him.

With everything on Earth becoming more and more controlled since the war rebuilding process had been put into full swing, Supreme Kai understood that it was time for him to move on. He was starting to become a creature of habit on the planet and that would only put himself and those he came in contact with in danger. The people of Earth were not completely fit to deal with this type of thing and while no place was really “ready” for the power of the Storm King; the Paladins of Avalon would provide the best chance at protecting the planet from the force of the demon. It was to that end and for that reason that he had traveled to Avalon with the one person that had gotten directly involved with his problems to this point the professor, Juch. It was his hope that being here would allow for them to get some training in and to better be ready in case of another attempt at his life by Khorramzadeh.

Their ships had been “parked” in a protected lot secured by the paladins for the most loyal protectors of the Universe. While the professor didn’t necessarily fall into that category the war decorated Supreme Kai was constantly honored as a Master Paladin even though he never went through the official training. It was an honor that only befell the bravest and most honorable warriors and something the Kaioshin took great pride in achieving during his war efforts. He took his position very seriously, but he wasn’t sure exactly what it entitled. All he knew was that he was a defender of the Universe, a role he had owned long before anyone in the Avalon order had even existed.

He didn’t hesitate after he landed to start walking towards a temple of sorts that could be seen in the distance. He turned his head and looked at the professor, ”Juch that place in the distance, that temple is the home and training center for the most powerful paladins the Avalon Protectorate has. I know you don’t seem to be the type that would eagerly join a group like the Paladins, but I feel the skills they have to teach would be invaluable for any combat situation we might find ourselves in. I hate to say it, but I feel if we continue to travel together that I will indirectly put you in harm’s way. It is not like powerful demon lords stop searching for someone they want to kill until you know the job is done. That means even though I haven’t sensed his presence in this dimension lately that I am still constantly under close watch and I have to be on high alert. I will understand if you wish to go about your own way, but I would advise against it. From my understandings of what is coming after me he is constantly watching and knows who you are as well. I doubt you would be safe on your own for long. I am truly sorry for getting you involved in this mess. Here we will have the protection or ourselves and some of the most righteous and powerful paladins in the galaxy. I believe that alone should deter the demon from coming after my at least immediately and directly as he has in the past.” The Kaioshin said hoping his friend would make the right decision for now and stay here to train and hopefully find more protection then was readily available elsewhere in the Universe.

After he finished talking he pushed slightly off the ground, casually flying to the temple and hoping that Juch would follow. Truly it was what was best for both of them at this point. The Storm King would be ruthless if he ever saw the slightest opening and Supreme Kai knew just that. As he arrived at the temple he looked over his shoulder to see Juch was still right behind him. He gave a joyous grin to his friend and then walked up to the door of the temple. Two Paladins stood before the door, both of them wearing full armor and wielding powerful swords that were issued out to only the strongest defenders of the planet. He continued to approach and as he did he pulled out his Master Paladin Signet showing it to both guards who stepped aside to let him pass. They both glared at the man following him though, the temple he was about to enter was sacred to the Paladins and they would never allow just anyone to enter. Supreme Kai knew that and spoke up again, ”He is with me. I will take responsibility for anything he does while here. I assure you though he is only here to help and learn from the best masters we have available. I believe he might even be capable of learning the most sacred of Ganr’s abilities. If that is true, then he clearly will be test well enough inside of the temple.”

The paladins knew the respect that came with the medals, signets, ribbons and rank that the Kaioshin had earned during the war. They did what good soldiers always seemed to do and they followed the words of their superior and let Juch pass as well. For them if a Master had declared it to be ok, then it clearly would be ok going forward. They walked into the temple, but before they could make it too far one of the guards rushed in from the door in a hurry and cut off Supreme Kai and Juch in their path, ”Sir, I am sorry to stop you so fast, but I just got word that a group of bandits have rushed over the mountains to the north towards a small village. A request for anyone that is able to help would was just sent out and I knew with your standing that you would be the best man for the job. It might also help to prove the non-paladin deserves to be here.”

Supreme Kai nodded and then looked at Juch. They were here for other purposes, but clearly this was going to take priority for now. It was going to be another test of Juch, one of many he would have to go through while training with the Paladins. Supreme Kai also knew he was not a traditional paladin and that he was always under scrutiny. This would be a good thing for them to take on before they began their training. It was also too much of a coincidence that no sooner did they arrive that an invasion happened. Clearly something was going on and he had to know what exactly it was.

The air was cool to touch. It was Juch’s first impression of Avalon, home of the paladins in shining white. The way that he traveled to this planet was one that he did not expect; the android had originally anticipated a relatively short ride through space, perhaps on the order of days, before arriving at the Avalonian customs. He had his visa all planned and everything. There may have been some trouble, but nothing that he couldn’t handle.

However, instead the entire trip took only the span of seconds instead of days. Whatever Shin had used, it was very effective; all those annoying paperwork procedures were bypassed within a blink of an eye. Juch removed his hand from the metallic surface of his ship and moved towards the entrance of the hangar. Now that they were ahead of schedule, what should they do first? Before they left Earth, Shin had suggested that they go and train on Avalon; since there weren’t any renowned masters on this planet—at least, none of what Juch had heard of, anyways—then the only other option would have to be at the…

The professor followed Shin, hands behind his back, listening to what his companion had to say. He followed Shin’s gaze over to the building in the distance. A massive structure; even here, he could see the various statues littered around the temple. He had seen those training centers in picture form, but never up close before. From what Shin had said, it appeared that this temple wasn’t an ordinary one. Only the best trained there. Hmm, how fascinating. It would explain the amount of detail put into such a place.

Juch was a little surprised that the temple had emerged relatively unscathed from the war; after the Steel Legion took the fight to the capital of the Protectorate, it was a bloody ordeal no matter how one would look at it. The chef took a glance at Shin the moment the topic of joining the paladins was brought up. Although his companion continued to talk, Juch was standing to the side in silent mirth, a wide grin on his scarred face.

Joining the paladins indeed! It was a funny thought. After so many times just hiding away at the mere mention of the organization so long ago, it would be rather ironic should he attempt to join their ranks decades later. But the main point was about learning, and honestly, that was what Juch was interested in in the first place; it wasn’t the only reason though. Avalon’s technological prowess was also known across the galaxy. While there may not be much time outside of training available to him, the professor still wanted to check out the bazaar. There may be some useful upgrades in store.

That is, if he can participate in training. He wasn’t a paladin, himself, that much was for certain. And trying to enter such a temple without any sort of authorization—he’d be laughed out in a second. But since Shin joined efforts with the Avalon Protectorate during the war, maybe there’d be a chance after all. It was only reasonable to assume that since Shin was confident enough to approach this training center, there was something up his sleeve.

Perhaps Shin was a paladin this whole time? Now that would be an interesting little tale. Heh, but it was entirely possible. Shin’s goals and the paladins’ seemed to match up quite nicely. Justice and good for all, or something of that sort. Juch would just have to wait and see when they approach this temple. Shin had already lifted off of the ground, and Juch was not far behind. It was even chillier outside. Keeping his arms crossed, the android trailed behind. He had kept silent during what Shin had to say, choosing to let his actions speak for him.

Sometimes, being silent is the best option.

As he followed Shin at an even slower, more leisurely pace, the android tilted his head back at the hangar that they were leaving. He’ll need to go to the temple with Shin; everything else will have to be left to Mr. Fields for now.

----

Meanwhile, a pudgy round creature back in Juch’s ship was already shuffling around, “Juuuch?” the fat cat meowed, “Let’s leave already! I wanna get the launch stuff over with so I can take a nap!”

With his short, stubby tail swishing in the air, Mr. Fields, after waiting for a whooping ten seconds for his companion, decided to see what the fuss was all about. The white quadruped struggled for a bit to get up towards the ship window, conveniently placed above a soft couch. It took him a while for his rotund body, but by the time he finally reached the glass plating, Mr. Fields was just in the nick of time to see two retreating figures in the distance.

Instead of a lush forest nearly burnt, drowned, crushed, or torn apart greeting the cat’s eyes, it was a harsh metallic hangar; other aircraft was stored by the sides, and the landscape outside looked nothing anywhere near where they were on Earth just a few seconds ago.

Mr. Fields blinked twice. What the hell just happened? Did he knock himself out without realizing it. He blinked again, attempting to comprehend what just happened. They didn’t lift off or anything; hell, Juch didn’t even get back into the ship. And yet, this was definitely not where they had landed to pick up that Shin guy. He curled his forelegs underneath his body while he thought about what happened.

After ten more seconds, he was done thinking. There were more important things to do. Like raiding the ship for those delicious dark chocolate brownies that Juch stored away somewhere. Mmmm. The feline already started salivating by the mere thought of it. Jumping down from the window sill with much more grace than he tried getting up there to begin with, Mr. Fields waddled down to the kitchen.

At about the same time, elsewhere, someone picked up a cell phone from an old drawer. Its worn surface and cracked screen signified its age, and it glowed with a feeble light. Gloved hands caressing the outside, a thumb pressed a green button with the utmost care. The message was as follows: “Arrived on Avalon. Ready for the next step.”

The receiver of this call tapped the phone gently, before returning it back into the old drawer. It will be a while before the device would be used again. Until then, it can rest a bit, doze back into slumber, away from this entire mess. What light from the machine had left died down, leaving itself back in complete darkness. Just because there was a small glow of light somewhere, does not mean that the shadows were completely expelled.

The same could be said for the afternoon sun overhead. The bright yellow glow of Hellio encompassing the entire landscape would prevail at the moment, but with time, it will soon be night without fail. During the casual flight over to the temple, there was something that lingered in the back of Juch’s mind: that encounter with the elementals back on Earth.

Whoever this demon lord is, he was a formidable foe. It was a headache to deal with those spirits that he had supposedly corrupted. Facing the actual person himself would be a challenge, something that Juch is unprepared to deal with. How does one even start with someone from the afterlife? The end all be all of life? The one thing that terrifies everyone, and the one part of living that is the most precious to all, life itself. To overcome a demon lord does not equate to overcoming death, but…an analogy could no doubt be made. This wasn’t like that PTO assassin; no, no, this was much worse. After all, Juch hadn’t even caught a glimpse of the actual enemy, only his “minions”.

It was then Juch had another sudden thought, one that he should have asked himself long ago in his own over-analytical sort of way. Why would the underworld be interested in the affairs of Shin, though? A demon lord that is seeking for Shin’s life, to drag it down into the afterlife. What was the motive behind all of this? The case regarding the elementals has not been made very clear to Juch, much less the overall picture. However, he would loath to directly ask Shin about further details; any of that would be prying, and if it was important enough, Shin would have let him know long ago. Just for his own bookkeeping, this was something to keep in mind.

They were close to the temple. Juch kept his arms folded over his chest and lowered himself down to the ground, behind where Shin had landed. He mirrored his companion’s smile, albeit briefly; as soon as Shin’s back was turned, the android’s facial expressions lowered back down to a neutral, intense stare. He wasn’t too happy to be at someplace like this, but it wasn’t like he was dragged kicking and screaming over here. Those two paladins standing guard over there was going to be troublesome. He’d prefer to stay as far away from this organization as possible, but…

Yep, there it was. Shin had one of those shiny medallions, one of those certificates. He was a paladin all this time, huh? What a twist. Well, if that was the case, then so be it. Juch adjusted the tall red hat resting on his brow. It wasn’t like this quality was basis enough to leave; it didn’t matter in the slightest. Shin didn’t know about what Juch had as his side businesses, and the professor planned to keep it that way.

The two guards let Shin through; no doubt, the thing that he had produced worked its magic on them. However, when Juch made just a tiny bit of advancement forward, those two seemed that they wanted to rip the chef to shreds. It was obvious that he wasn’t welcome here. What glare they attempted to subdue the android with was returned tenfold by Juch. Who did they think he was?

From a passerby’s point of view, it was possible that there was a spat happening between three locals. Juch had long, white hair as well, but that was where the similarities between him and the paladins ended. The staring contest would have continued for some time if someone else hadn’t spoken up. Well, Shin had more sway around these parts than what Juch had originally anticipated—a few words here, and the soldiers had stepped aside to allow the scientist entry as well.

Heh. It was good to have friends in the right places. Placing his hands down by his sides, the chef climbed the stone steps, following Shin into the large temple. There were two swords carved into the stone arc of the entrance, but the asymmetry of the design made the android pause for just a moment. Hmm, it seemed like they were two different blades. Interesting; Juch wondered what this picture entailed as he entered the temple—a feat that even months ago, he would have thought to be impossible.

The temple was very quiet. The entire surrounding area had been quiet. Hmm, how odd. For a training center, Juch had expected at least some sort of noise; but no indication of activity was available for him to detect. Hmm, perhaps they were practicing meditation? It was one explanation among many. Their footsteps echoed in the hallway, and it did not take long for a third pair to join their cacophony. A guard rushed past Juch and stopped in front of Shin.

The moment this happened, the professor tensed up. Was there a problem with their visit after all? Fortunately, within the first sentence, it turned out that this was not a case. Good, good. Juch exhaled with a soft hiss, closing his eye and paid close attention to what this guard had to say. So, a small village was going to be attacked by bandits?

Hmm. Usually, when bandits raid villages, they just steal a part of the supplies there. After all, unprotected settlements were their bread and butter. Burning something like that to the ground or taking everything that the local populace could offer would be counterproductive to the bandits’ goals. So, in this case, if his reasoning was correct so far, it was like they were making another trip to the “bank”.

It seemed to be an almost trivial matter to send Shin over there, but since they were so apprehensive about the second visitor to the temple, then perhaps they should see to this. Maybe Juch could turn this to his advantage, depending on the exact niceties of the scenario. However, it was a little odd that a request like this should turn up at this time; that last line was especially odd. It brought a scowl to the chef’s face, for certain, but it hinted at some sort of ulterior motive to this report.

Juch let out a chuckle. So, was this a test of sorts? Did the paladins really want to play this sort of game, this kind of shadow dance? If so, then their starting play could not have gone more poorly. The professor turned his head towards Shin, meeting his friend’s gaze, “…if that case,” Juch’s deep voice resonated in the otherwise quiet temple, “Then we should stop them before they reach that village to minimize damage. If this report turns out to be correct, all we have to do is to arrive at the village before the bandits. Otherwise, if their exact coordinates can be tracked, we can head there directly.”

“I have said my piece,” he concluded, closing his eye and awaited for Shin’s response. He could have gone and taken the initiative at this sort of thing, but that may have overplayed his hand a bit. After all, he was still a guest here and has yet to prove himself to the paladins’ satisfaction. He didn’t want to overstep his boundaries; Shin should be the one to execute the plan, considering his status in the order.

It was settled. Juch was right they had to move quickly if they were going to intercept the bandits before they did too much damage. For now the reports were that they were only on the outskirts of the small town, but bandits tended to move fast and Supreme Kai knew it. Without saying a word he simply nodded to the suggestion of Juch and rushed back outside before blasting off in flight with his friend right behind him. They blasted through the Avalon skies like two airplanes on an urgent bombing mission for the military or something to that extent. It would not take very long for the two of them to reach their end destination and deal with the bandits and bring them to justice. In the end that was the way things happened here. People were brought to justice not painful deaths like on other planets.

They arrived on the outskirts of town and senses and scouters began to activate doing the rest of the work for the “heroes” as the approached and landed right in front of the clan of nearly 100 bandits that had formed for a small town that was really probably less in population than the force they were about to be met with. It seemed off. It felt like something else, something incredibly bad was going on here now. Supreme Kai looked over to Juch who seemed to get wide eyed for just a moment, ”You don’t think this was a setup or something like that do you. This seems like an awfully big turnout just for a town like this. Bandits don’t normally waste resources like this from my experiences. This has trap written all over it. I think we should proceed with caution.”

The Kaioshin looked at the group of incoming of bandits who suddenly stopped seeing two men standing before them. Supreme Kai flared up his aura sending a wave of wind through the area that pushed them back a little showing that the bandits had met the end of their raid before they really had a chance to do much at all. Many of the bandits backed away seeing the display of power, but a couple stepped forward. The one in the front was the leader and while he seemed confident his eyes continued to look down to the ground and not at the two men standing before the group of bandits.

”I am here to tell you to end this peacefully or else we will have to turn you into the authorities of this planet. I don’t know why you have chosen this town, but I can tell you that you will not make it past the two of us standing before you. Surrender now and no one needs to get hurt.” Supreme Kai said trying to talk some sense into the bandits he could sense were no match for him or even his doctor friend if this turned into a physical altercation.

At that moment the two men with the apparent leader started to back away trying to take the Kaioshin up on his offer, but before they made it far he turned and in panoply fluently slaughtered both of them with a flawless series of attacks. He then looked up at Supreme Kai ignoring Juch completely, ”I was given my power by one that told me a fool like you would come to stop me. I honored him by following his instructions and knowing it would be the end of me, but in the end the gift I was given was far beyond what you could understand. My gift is not of this world, but the next. He wanted me to tell you though that he would find you no matter where you went. He would track you down no matter where you went and that you couldn’t hide amongst the paladins forever!”

As the leader finished talking the other bandits had already turned tail and took off fleeing not only from the two that came to stop them, but from their leader. He then charged at Supreme Kai as electricity and fire started to flow around him. Before he could get there though Supreme Kai noticed a net of ki come from Juch and surround the charging target.

The Kaioshin slowly approached the subdued target, but as he did the crazed man’s eyes got big and his body began to expand before self-destructing causing an eruption of Ki. Supreme Kai immediately turned and summoned down the divine aegis around himself as he moved to cover his friend from the explosion. As the smoke and light settled Supreme Kai looked over at Juch he was clearly showing some wear and tear from the explosion, but overall looked to be fine.

”I don’t like the message he gave me, but I think we should head back. This town is safe and I think the bandits realized they were misled. I hope this is last time we have to deal with this type of thing, but I am concerned it won’t be. Seems the demon that is hunting me has more tricks then I expected him to have. I am sorry that it feels like trouble keeps coming after me and you keep getting involved. I just hope it stops soon!”
