Gadr swished his hand through the holographic display. Thousands of stars, represented by pinpoints of lights, dispersed into random directions, before coalescing back into their original spots a moment later. He yawned and leaned back in the hard metal seat. The Command Center of the ship flickered and flitted with life all around him. The computer displays dancing with data and symbols, the entirety of it thrust under dim azure light.

After cryosleep for seven thousand years, he thought he would be excited to be awake. But, he just felt bored. The surveys of the North Quadrant had proven to be disappointing. His race having faded long ago, leaving nothing more than hollowed out ruins spread across thousands of worlds. Some were populated by new races, others vacant lifeless spheres.

Hodr entered, his boots clicking on the deck as he strode forward. His uniform, pearly white, was pressed to perfection, his big green eyes stark in contrast to the hazy blue. Otherwise, Hodr was a mountain of a man, broad shoulders, thick armed. His chin looked like a block of stone, hewed by a crude chisel, that fact complimented by his dull gray skin and stark white hair.

Gadr leaned forward and rested his chin in his palms. “Hodr. I am bored.”

“You are lazy, not bored. There is a difference. Your father would be disgraced,” Hodr said.

Gadr waved him off. “That old fool is long in the grave. So, how did your survey go?”

“Well. Apparently the beings are known as Keliouxians. They appear to be our direct descendants but they have fallen off. The Saiyans, Avalanians, and Damaskians also appear to share parts of our DNA, although they are horribly diluted. I found it interesting how modified the Saiyans are, it appears they have undergone some unnatural evolution. But, I cannot prove that. I believe they were biologically engineered, spliced with some sort of apes. This has given them great power, but they have still lost a great deal.”

“So? What I hear is, we slept for nothing. How pleasant. A bunch of mongrel races have laid ruin to our legacy. What was it they call us? They don’t even remember our name, do they?”

“They call us the Lost. Aptly put, I might say, as our race has vanished eons ago, at least in their relative time spans. Most of them are very infantile races. Don’t be so dismayed my young friend. There is hope after all.”

Gadr stood up and slinked past him, flipping his cape over one shoulder. “I am going back into cryosleep. Wake me up in another millennia or two. This is depressing.”

“No,” Hodr said, slamming a massive palm on his shoulder. “If we sleep for any longer, it may be too late for all life. We need to act now, begin the Reclamation. I didn’t share with you the rest of my research.”

“What else did you find? Another dust ball with some more runts?”

“Yes. The human race of Earth. They appear, however, to be the fruit that fell furthest from our genetic tree. But, their planet, however is much greater of an interest to me. It is directly on a junction of galactic ley lines. It would take us eons to find a similar place. Just enough energy for us to do what we need to do. Plus, it appears to be guarded by powerful warriors. As they say, power attracts power. There would no doubt be a battle.”

Gadr grinned. “Well, now you’re speaking my language, old man.”

Roland and his daughter Ruby materialized outside of Central City. The air around them rippled with magical radiation, rainbows of light refracting in all directions. The tall grass, fields of wheat and barley stretched out for countless miles, rimmed by the jagged teeth of mountains, capped with white snow. Roland could immediately see the spires of Central City rising up towards the heavens, reflecting the sun’s light, making them look as if they were set aflame.

“This… is Earth,” Ruby said under her breath.

Roland smiled fondly at his daughter’s amazement. It was far better than terror or sadness. After her rescue, she had come full circle the past few weeks. No doubt, visiting Pool of the Ancestors and meeting with Roland’s wife’s spirit had helped put her at east. She stood just above his waist, a girl of twelve Zaun years. She had red hair, long down the length of her back. Her eyes were a bright molten gold, filled with wonder and awe, just like her mother’s had been.

Couched in the corner of Roland’s arm and shoulder was the Father of Swords. The massive blade stood taller than he was. Its handle and pommel, wrapped with braided leather, extended a good half a foot past the top of his head. It had a battered crossguard and the immense blade was sheathed with a simple cloth scabbard. The blade itself was nearly as wide as he was, a sword meant for a giant or a mad man, but now Roland's responsibility. Being that it was so cumbersome, he didn’t look forward to carrying it around. Regardless, he lifted it and slung it over his shoulder, and waded out into field.

The Son, the dagger that complimented it, rested at his hip, sheathed on his belt. The two weapons had been placed in his protection and given to him to use against the forces of evil out there. Roland felt better that he had the blades in his possession, rather than someone who would use them for dark means. Then again, adding another responsibility to his already growing pool didn’t make him at ease.

He had to look after a teenage daughter, serve as the Avatar of the God of Wisdom, and protect ancient weapons tainted by demonic magic.

Ruby trotted after him. “Dad, are we going to meet your friend Walid?”

Roland reached out mentally, probing for Walid’s mana signature. “I think he’s preoccupied right now. We’ll meet him soon. Don't worry.”

The Saiyan Inferno
Not much can be said for the experience of coming back to the real world after having spent a year in complete and utter whiteness.

The words simply do not do the feeling justice.

As the duo stepped out of the door from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to the tiled floor of Kami's Lookout, the sudden array of colors is the first thing that caught Chishan's attention. The off-whites, the soft maroons. Oh how it felt to see it. He couldn't help but grin as he stopped in front of the Guardian of Earth and his genie friend, Mr. Popo.

"I trust your time was well spent?" The elder namekian asked, resting his right hand on his wooden cane.

"You know, it's been about a year since I've used it...but the Time Chamber is an experience all in itself. I'll admit I'm fairly relieved to be out. The air just...smells right out here." The saiyan said, taking a deep sniff of the fresh, cool high-atmosphere wind.

"I don't know what you're complaining about. I thought that was a great experience. I haven't felt this great since I got out of boot camp." Monica said, smacking her right fist into her left's open palm. "How about we go find Apio and have ourselves a little sparring match?"

Mr. Popo blinked. "You're...still that excited? Most humans are exhausted once they leave the chamber, wanting to sleep for days."

It seemed that the very word popped the former assassin's zesty balloon. "Oh god, a real bed? Never mind, I would rather go crash for a couple of hours." And just as quickly as she had jumped at the idea of fighting, the human girl slunk away towards her temporary room in need of some dire rest.

The old guardian glanced at Chishan. "I think it's fair to say you trained her hard."

He nodded. "I put her through the ringer. She had a lot of pent-up anger inside of her that needed to be purged before I could really get through to her though. That took literally weeks." He said, already remembering his 'lessons' that had resulted in the blonde storming off. "But she progressed really fast. Though in the past couple of days, she had flown off to train deeper inside the chamber. I think she really was pushing herself."

Kami hummed. "She's not the only one. I can sense quite the increase in your power, Chishan. You must have done some personal training yourself."

The Saiyan Inferno let a sly smirk come across his face as he shrugged. "I might have sped my way to some of the deepest parts of the chamber. Let me tell you, I don't think I've felt gravity that heavy before in my life. I must have been at least two hundred times Earth's gravity."

Mr. Popo nodded with a smile. "Oh yes, the chamber gets stronger and denser the deeper you go inside. Many people worry about putting themselves though the rigorous training out there for fear of collapsing. They worry they'll never make it back to the door."

Chishan yawned and stretched his arms up towards the ceiling. "Well, that was fun. But I think its time for me to go out and get acclimated with the world again."

"You know, you said the same thing when you came out last time."

He shrugged. "Perhaps but that doesn't make it any less true. I'm going to head to my favorite steak restaurant. Well...of course that's counting that its still standing after the Steel Legion pulverized Central City. Only one way to find out." And as he finished speaking, his form tore apart and disappeared from existence.

Kami sighed softly, though it wasn't altogether a sad one. "It amazes me that man can be so carefree with all the tragedy he's had to go through in such a short time."

Mr. Popo nodded. "I wonder if he bottles it up. That wouldn't be good at all."

The namekian shook his head. "No Mr. Popo, something tells me the tension that he's been feeling over the past few months may indeed be gone. I just hope he hasn't forgotten the past too much, else he won't be able to remember the lessons he learned from it."

-----

The Lightning Lord appeared in the center of Central City, materializing right next to one of the water fountains. He glanced back at the battered piece of architecture, eying the broken rubble and missing water. This had been here before the war, he remembered it spraying high into the air before raining down into the small pool below it. Children had played in it, passing pedestrians would stop there to sit for a moment or to read a book on lunch break. But that had been a long time ago, when the Steel Legion hadn't run over the human race like ants.

He turned his eyes away from it and looked up the road. A lot of the construction had been going on in the centralized sector, where the old Earth Defense Forces building had been. Of course, it was more likely to be called the Steel Legion's former main hub at this point but that was just thinking about semantics. Either way, it had been deemed unsalvageable and was condemned to be torn down. In its place, a large statue would be erected for the men, women and children who lost their lives during the Legion's occupation, whether they were fighting back or not. Their memory deserved to be honored, if only to remind the human race of what had happened to them.

This particular sector was still heavily damaged, though many of the rubble patches and bodies had been removed. Some of the shops had managed to reopen with limited supplies, specifically sold to those that had lost a lot during the war.

The real tragedy is that was, in fact, everyone.

He strolled down the street, focused on the small corner of a building in front of him. The glass had been blasted out and the green tapestry that had hung over the entrance had been completely shredded. Green tarp covered the street around it, where shards of glass and piles of trash had been gathered. But he couldn't help but smile when he saw the metal seats and chairs set up on patio and customers seated.

Perhaps this was his lucky day.

Hodr rested his hand on the top of the cage. Inside a beast loosed a deep growl, followed by an acidic hiss. Hodr made a clicking sound with his tongue, silencing it. Gadr could barely see the beast, but by its shadow he could tell it was lying down now.

Clusters of the same sort of cages littered the cargo hold. Gadr could see shadows of movement inside each of them, and heard whispers of movement and low growls. Occasionally, from between the bars wispy tentacles appeared out, flicking and flitting before being withdrawn inside.

“So, what do you plan to do with a bunch of animals?”

Hodr did not smile, but instead he cleared his throat and folded his arms in front of him. Gadr wondered if he had ever seen the giant scientist ever smile. It wasn’t likely. They had spent eons together, scouting forward in time, researching and waiting for the perfect moment to revive their race. Apparently, Hodr thought that time was now. Gadr didn’t understand that, but was glad for some sort of activity. Sitting in cryosleep for thousands of years wasn’t his idea of living. Having every single person you loved and cared about be dead, turned to ash and dust by the ravages of time, didn’t help either.

“These are Whisper Hounds. They are from a planet at the very edge of this galaxy, and they have a very unique ability. They can teleport short distances. They are remarkably intelligent and fast, making them great hunters. I have trained this group to seek out targets and lock them down. Their tentacles and their bites are venomous. One bite or sting will paralyze even the most powerful of beings. They are the perfect hunters,” Hodr said.

“What will we do after they’ve paralyzed these fighters?”

Hodr pointed at Gadr. “You will eliminate them. That is your purpose in this mission, is it not?”

Gadr shook his head. “No, dammit. I am a warrior not... an assassin.”

Hodr shook his head. “Well, there is only one of you and perhaps dozens that could face you on this planet. Despite your astounding power, I very much doubt you could fight a veritable army. So, let us use cunning and intelligence to fight potential enemies. You’re not an assassin, yes, but from what I understand, as a warrior, it is far more important that you defeat your foes. Am I wrong?”

“You being wrong about something? Can that happen?”

“It is possible. Every scientist must be willing to admit that they are wrong at times. But in this, I think my logic reigns supreme. Come then warrior help me load these cages into the drop pod.”

Central City, from what Roland understood was Earth’s Capital and center of government was beginning to rebuild. Still rubble lined the streets, along with the battered carcasses of war. He saw heaps of deactivated Steel Legion robots, once human beings, all converted into war machines.

People, having returned to Earth, were picking up the pieces. Large machinery with buckets and cranes moved hunks of fallen buildings, cleaning the roadways. With the return of citizens, so did commerce. Some shops had reopened, along with restaurants and cafes. Ruby walked alongside Roland as they moved down the street. Many humans gave him strange stares, uncomfortable. No doubt because of the massive sword that rested on his shoulder.

“I’m starving,” Roland said. “What about you kiddo?”

Ruby perked an eyebrow and patted her stomach. “I have been. No offense, but we haven’t even anything since we left Gradius’s hut. And, his food was terrible.

“Come on, you didn’t like giant crustacean stew? I saw you wolf it down.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Dad, I was starving. Like I am now. But, I didn’t find good at all,” Ruby said.

“Did Lord Gandrick feed you?” Roland asked, his voice taking a more serious tone.

“If blocks of cold protein and nutrient slop count as food, then yes.”

“Bastard. I’m glad I killed him.”

She chuckled. “Me too. He always ate like a king.”

Roland was glad she could joke about her experiences a bit more. No doubt it made things easier for her to deal with. He was lucky that Gandrick never hurt her. Real lucky.

“You’ll be relieved, Earth food is quite… good. I must admit, much better than Zaun. They like to make things real flavorful.”

Roland rounded the corner and spotted a cafe. Even among the rubble, people were seated drinking out of steaming cups and talking among each other. Roland spotted a hooded fellow, with a tuft of brown hair and recognized him immediately. He strode over and dropped his massive sword, leaning on it as if it were a cane.

“If it is isn’t Chishan, greetings friend,” Roland said.

“Oh, and I would like you to meet someone. Chishan, this is my daughter Ruby.”

The red haired girl smiled bright and waved at Chishan, staying close to her dad’s side. “Hello sir,” she said.

After introductions, Roland took a seat and ordered sandwiches for his daughter and himself. As they waited for a meal, Roland turned to Chishan. “So, how have things been going here? I see the humans have done a good deal of rebuilding. I’ve been off world for a few weeks, I went and rescued my daughter here. Have you seen Walid or any of the other Avatars in a while? I’m meaning to catch up with them.”

The Saiyan Inferno
It has been far too long,

He leaned back in his metal chair and watched the waiter walk away, satisfied that his order was about to be filled. All he had to do was wait.

Saiyan appetites were known to include pretty much anything that could rationally be cut up or cooked. Their stomachs were lined with layers of protection against poisons and their stomach acid had evolved to break down most products safely, including raw meat. Saiyans afterall were warriors and, as such, had to be able to eat anything they could get their hands on.

But Chishan was not raised on living off the natural world. He had been pampered to a point. Oboe had fed him on Damaskia, the Shadowguard had fed him, Master Roshi had fed him, Rubic's vessel the Codex had fed him, Maverick had fed him, his own vessel's cooks had fed him and so on and so forth. He had never experienced what it was like to live off the land since he never found himself short on money or on allies that could provide sustenance. So to say the saiyan was a bit sheltered...wasn't entirely off the mark.

He had first tasted Earthly delicacies on his first trip to the planet, gorging himself on numerous plates. But he had found that the heavily cooked, greasy meat slabs that came from 'cows' were his favorite. And nothing was more delicious to the Saiyan Inferno than a nice, well-done T-bone steak.

Even the very thought caused his mouth to water and he quickly picked up his glass of water and took a sip, hoping to curb his appetite for a bit longer. He had chosen to sit at a table for six, despite the complaints of the wait staff. Of course, after he had put in his order for food, they quickly understood; it wasn't just one t-bone steak, it was three. And at least a dozen sides to follow that as well. He needed as much room as possible, though he had no doubt he would clean his plates in record time.

His eyes turned to watch the people passing by, each traveling on their own separate journeys. Despite everything that had happened on Earth in recent time, it seemed that mankind was quickly adapting to the cataclysmic event and moving forward. Despite the hundreds upon thousands of saiyan warriors that still stood guard in many of the cities, they had seemed to go back to normal living. An amazing feat, given the reputation of the Saiyan Empire. Surely everyone in the galaxy was waiting with baited breath for the king to give the order and all of humanity to suddenly go from free people to slaves.

The idea caused his brow to furrow. He would be on the opposing side of the king then, arguing in Earth's favor. He had met plenty of humans with great levels of potential and they all deserved a chance to rise to that level of inherent destiny. They could become great warriors themselves in time, even powerful allies for the Saiyan Empire against the malicious Planetary Trade Organization. Yes, he could argue with his king until he was hoarse or threatened with treason.

And even then...he might still stand firm.

The sound of a heavy metal object hitting the ground caught his attention and dashed his thought process. His eyes darted from the nonexistent realm of contemplation and glanced at the new intruder. The hardened stare quickly softened and a small smile came across his lips as he realized it was an old friend; Roland of Gilead. The rusty-haired man stood there grinning and wielding a sword that was much too large for him.

"Roland." He said with a grin and a nod. "Glad to see you. It's been quite some time. Please have a seat. I always welcome company."

"Ruby." He repeated the name, committing it to memory. He reached out and shook her hand gently. "It's a pleasure. Feel free to call me Chishan. Sir makes me sound...old." Even as he spoke, he thought back to the fact that he was in fact a whole year older.

The waiter came back to take the new arrivals' orders, a matching pair of sandwich plates. The very thought of a roast beef sandwich rumbled Chishan's stomach and he quickly caught the waiter and placed an order for one, adding on to his already mighty meal.

He turned his gaze back to the Zaunite and his daughter. "It seems everyone is beginning to finally move on. The rebuilding process is slow but they seem determined to prove they can rise above this. There are still a lot of people missing but...well, no need to bring up negative thoughts." He said, shaking his hand in front of his face as if to wave a fly away.

He nodded softly to Roland's question. "Walid I've seen quite a bit recently. I ran into him in Gingertown a couple days ago. Elric has been off training for quite a few weeks, trying to get his strength up before he attempts another lesson with me." He chuckled gently. "He was...a bit worse for wear after the last time." He racked his brain for a moment before he spoke again. "To my knowledge, those are the only ones I've met. I know there are a few more around but I've yet to run into them."

Finally their meals came. Well, to be more precise, the sandwiches came and the first two plates for Chishan came. A trio of baked potatoes with scallions, butter and bacon and a plate of honey-roasted chicken wings, another set of three. He smacked his lips together and rubbed his hands slowly in a circle, excited. "So tell me Roland; exactly where have you been? And what happened to you, Ruby, if you don't mind me asking."

"It seems everyone is beginning to finally move on. The rebuilding process is slow but they seem determined to prove they can rise above this. There are still a lot of people missing but...well, no need to bring up negative thoughts,” Chishan said.

Roland shook his head, a frown visible on his face. “I traveled the Earth extensively and I saw a quite bit of the devastation. While, there are a lot of worlds out there who have suffered worse from war, seeing this planet in such a state made me really think about just how far evil’s hand can reach. Earth in many ways, is a beacon of light and hope. There’s definitely something special here, it’s almost in the air.”

He motioned to the people sitting all around them, nonchalantly. “These humans, they’re not as fast or strong as we Zaunites, or even Saiyans such as yourself. Yet, they persevere, no matter what.”

Roland had seen humans pulling their lives out of the rubble. Scraping together whatever they had left, helping out each other. It made him think about how he had simply given up on Zaun. It made him want to go back and fight the PTO, to reclaim his home world once again. But, first, he wanted to help humanity, see it flourish once again.

"Walid I've seen quite a bit recently. I ran into him in Gingertown a couple days ago. Elric has been off training for quite a few weeks, trying to get his strength up before he attempts another lesson with me. He was...a bit worse for wear after the last time. To my knowledge, those are the only ones I've met. I know there are a few more around but I've yet to run into them,” Chishan said.

Just knowing that his comrades, at least two of them, were well off made Roland feel a bit better. He relaxed visibly, slumping in his seat. He took a long sip of his drink and glanced over at his daughter, she seemed to be engaged with her sandwich with a fervor he had never seen before. Even his wife Schala’s cooking had never inspired such ravenous behavior out of the girl.

“I’m glad that Walid is doing well,”] Roland said, leaning forward and steepling his fingers. “The kid is a firecracker…. literally. I trained with him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. In there we spent a year together. He didn’t say much after we left.”

"So tell me Roland; exactly where have you been? And what happened to you, Ruby, if you don't mind me asking."

Roland raised his eyebrows and shook his head. “That’s quite the story. Where do I even begin?”

Ruby, having polished off the last of her sandwich had some crumbs on her chin. She patted them off with a napkin and faced Chishan, vigor in her taut expression. “I was taken by smelly alien named Gandrick. He made me serve him wine and tell his other servants what to do. I followed him around to all different planets and he taunted me about my dad and mom being dead and not being able to save me. I didn’t know if I would ever be free of him.”

Roland’s jaw had dropped a little. Never did he expect Ruby to jump into an explanation like that, especially so soon after what had happened. The way she spoke, there was no frustration, fear, or even embarrassment. In fact, it seemed she had a measure of pride. Part of him understood it. Sometimes, when he made it through a gauntlet, he would feel the same way. It made him puff his chest out and feel grateful that he survived where others did not.

“I received a message, shortly after me and Walid completed our stay in the Chamber. It was from some sort of anti-PTO group, they called me to Cataylisma. I tried to rescue her, but was overwhelmed on my first attempt. If it weren’t for Talos’s, the God of Wisdom, and his power, I wouldn’t have made it out alive. I wound up on Kelioux where I briefly trained with one of Grandmaster Adel’s students. He taught me how to focus my energy so that I can detect the mana of others. With that, I was able to pin-point Ruby’s location and retrieve her. I killed Gandrick.”

Roland briefly glanced at the giant sword that leaned up against the table and let out a low whistle. “As for this baby, that’s story for another day.”

Just as he said that, Roland spotted something out of the corner of his eye. A trail of fire moved across the sky, pointed by a glowing sphere. It looked like an asteroid or some sort of debris falling into the atmosphere, until he saw it bank hard and make a plummeting descent. A half moment later its sonic boom shook the city, rattling the tables and any windows still within their sills.

Roland waited and then the sound of a massive explosion followed by a shockwave and gust of wind passed over them. He got to his feet, taking the Father of Swords by its handle and slinging it back on his shoulder.

“Ruby, you stay here. Stay out of trouble. I’m going to go see what just landed outside of the city. Something tells me, it might not be good. Things falling from space seldom are.”

Roland nodded to Chishan, who anticipated would come along and floated up into the air. There were a few gasps from the people sitting at the tables, but they all in all looked far too terrified at the streamer of black smoke and dust raising into the sky.

The object that fell wasn’t very big, smaller than an attack pod. It didn’t land directly either, instead it landed at an angle, digging a large smoldering trench across the grasslands. Roland set down beside it, jamming his huge sword into the upturned soil beside him. As he approached it, he could see that it wasn’t any sort of natural object. Bullet shaped, it had smooth lines, and thin grooves glowing with azure light.

Roland dared not touch it, instead he looked at Chishan. “You ever seen anything like this?”

Before he could respond he heard a series of low pops and jets of steam shot out of it. A hatch opened up and from within he saw a dozen or so sets of burning red eyes.

“Incoming.”

The first one shot out at Roland and he could see its shape. A sleek beast, to say the least, with long wispy tentacles and a nasty set of dripping jaws. Roland side stepped it, hearing its teeth clack as it missed him by inches. He kicked it in the side and it went tumbling through the air, landing on the other side of the scar.

Then it flickered out of sight, leaving behind a wispy glow of radiation. Mouth agape, Roland almost had the side of his leg torn out if it weren’t for a last minute backflip. He shifted, glancing back to see half the pack launching an attack on Chishan.

The Saiyan Inferno
He saw Earth as a beacon of light and hope...

So...Roland felt it too.

It had been a lingering emotion in the saiyan's body every time he set foot here. Even when he had first come to the planet, bright-eyed and unaware of the galaxy in a whole, he felt some special feeling deep inside that he could never quite explain. Earth was a miracle of sorts in the galactic landscape. Its people were not as technically advanced or battle driven as many of the other known races but they had a resilience that simply could not be snuffed. The Earth was a gem, still unrefined but beautiful in the great fabric of the universe. Its potential was far grander than others.

He smiled softly. "Unrelenting determination. As a whole, they stand steadfast against the raging waves of our time. They have their bad eggs of course, as do we all. But the greater portion of them are wholly good. It's...admirable."

He laughed as the conversation switched to Walid. "That he is. I can't imagine what it was like spending an entire year with him in an enclosed space. It surely must have been interesting." He thought back to yesterday, how young he had been in this Earthly time before he had entered the faster-paced dimension of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

"I myself just left the chamber not a few hours ago. I know you feel my pain when I say that I felt the need to get some real, restaurant cooked food. Rationed supplies gets old real fast." He spoke in between bites of his potatoes, holding each one like one would hold a hot dog and biting right into it. The flavors swirled on his tongue, electrifying his senses and causing his smile to spread even farther. No more stove-warmed meals for him, he was enjoying the finest of cuisines.

He stopped long enough to listen to Ruby's story, his demeanor hardening at the harrowing tale. He continued to hold his food in place and chewed softly as Roland pounded out the details of his adventure to save her. He nearly choked as the man gave thanks to a deity known as Talos for his survival and his brain sparked with plenty of thoughts. The Saiyan Inferno had met quite a few gods in recent weeks, including the ancient watchers of the universe, but he had never heard of this Talos, God of Wisdom. Perhaps he was a divine being only known on Zaun, the home planet of many of his recent friends. He had have to question this further at a better time and place.

"The Planetary Trade Organization." He said softly, spite practically dripping off his tongue as he said it aloud. "I've only had a few run-ins with them but they have not been pleasant. It seems everywhere they go, they simply cause chaos, devastation and destruction. I am sorry for what happened to you Ruby but I also must admire your spirit in the face of it. Many would have been broken by that but you...you held strong. I have no doubt your father is proud of you for that." He said, a small smile returning to his lips.

Just then, he noticed the man's eyes turned to an object off in the distance. He turned his head around to look at what could be catching his attention and a pit in his stomach almost instantly formed. Something was falling from the sky, an object clad in fire and smoke as it descended from the heavens. For half a moment, he thought it was an arriving saiyan pod but it was far too small to be that. And when it suddenly banked and rammed itself straight down towards the ground, he knew for a fact that this was something foreign.

And, even now, he felt something...unpleasant.

He returned Roland's nod and followed after him as quickly as possible, his energy already beginning to boil in his pool. The anticipation of returning to battle after a year away was already coursing adrenaline through his body. Below he could hear the whispers and cries of the people on the ground, their fear-stricken eyes focused on the trail of black smoke. These humans that had just started to heal from the war...

His fingers curled tighter into his palm.

Whatever the thing was, it landed about as gracefully as a crashing ship. A trench had been torn in its wake, sending soil splashing over the gentle green grass. He and Roland landed next to the object in question, looking it over intently. It reminded him a giant bullet, though it was grooved with glowing colors and decorative etches. It didn't look friendly on the face of it and that worried Chishan even more.

Roland asked him something but his focus was completely set on the object as it suddenly came to life, hissing and popping at them. Jets of heated air escaped from it in a loud whine before a small hatch opened at the end of it. And deep within the shadowed interior, dozens of glowing eyes looked back at the two men.

He saw the first one make a mad dash for the Zaunite, apparently in hopes of taking him off guard. The swordsman quickly dodged and knocked the creature away but by then, the saiyan's gaze had turned to the pack of canine-looking things beginning to surround him. The long, gray tentacles attached to them waved wildly in the air and the rows of sharpened teeth seemed to glisten in the sunlight. The saiyan had never seen creatures like these before...

And he had no desire to see anymore.

The first one that leapt at him simply had no chance. He had seen its approach in his mind, a bright flash and sound in his ears that presented the foretold attack for him and him alone. He quickly and easily stepped to the side to avoid it, his arms already coming up in front of him and his muscles bulging from anticipation.

One of its brethren followed right after, apparently hoping it could present a greater danger to its prey. But Chishan had moved into a steady and formed defensive stance, ready for an attack such as this. He bent at the knee and his right arm shot up in a hard uppercut that crashed into the creature's stomach. He heard the air explode out of its mouth, even through the sound of its teeth clacking furiously. He opened his fist against the hardened skin and unleashed a brutal ki blast right into the animal's body, sending it soaring into the air on the head of the blast.

The group anticipated that this prey would not go down as easily as first thought, staying back and circling around him. They snapped at one another, apparently their form of communication. They were planning.

"That's real clever." He said to them. "But you should never give your foe a chance to retaliate." And as he finished speaking, his arms shot out to the side and a dome of ki energy materialized around him, its golden light flashing as bright as the sun. With a grunt, he caused the dome to expand in a complete three hundred and sixty degree angle, crashing into the heads of the creatures and sending them spiraling backwards.

The grass underneath him had been completely incinerated, leaving behind rings of scorched earth around the saiyan. He had used the small explosion of his aura as a means to transform as well, his emerald eyes now staring back at the black creatures as they got to their feet again. A few had been knocked closer to Roland and turned towards him, choosing him over the newly ascended saiyan.

Three remained for him. As he prepared to attack, the trio suddenly disappeared with a loud pop and a radiating after glow. He paused long enough to figure out that they had teleported. Interesting. Teleporting pack hunters. His knees bent and then quickly straightened, rocketing him into the air.

Let's see how they fly.

That One Human
Adelaide Peters found himself in the remains of Central City. He ended up being there at least once a week, helping move rubble. Most of the city was still in shambles, but even so soon after it's destruction, reconstruction was beginning. There was construction equipment of all shapes and varieties around.

The people were trickling back in, too. This helped Adel, since it meant more hands to essential tasks. There were a few days where he had been put on C.R. duty, also known as Corpse Retrieval.

That was the worst experience of the young fighter's life. It had seemed there for a while that every time he had moved a rock there was another charred remain of a human being. Sometimes they weren't charred. Adel didn't know if that was worse or better. The first day he had retched until his stomach was empty.

The particular job had given him this empty feeling deep inside. He had stopped looking forward to each day. Even the serenity of Master Roshi's island had seemed fake, like a veneer over the twisted bodies. He even saw them in his dreams, which he admitted was a pleasant change from his near-nightly dreams of being slaughtered by the Steel Legion.

Seeing the people starting to move back in had given him hope again. Sometimes, with the death and destruction all around, he forgot about the human spirit. He didn't want to call it tenacity or valor. To him, the single best attribute of humanity was it's sheer stubbornness. The ability to weather any storm, pick up, and start all over again.

That stubbornness was what had allowed humanity to colonize the planet, after all. Following the great beasts of the plains and glaciers all over, then finally refusing to leave a nice area they found. It gave Adel hope, to see people too stubborn to leave even the ruins of the city they had grown up in and around.

Adel had not grown up in Central City, but he felt an obligation to be there. He had some lingering guilt over not being able to help stop the Legion earlier. People had died, many people, and he hadn't been able to help.

So he helped now. Super human strength came in handy when someone needed concrete and rebar moved with a more delicate touch. That was what he was doing now, holding up part of a collapsed garage so another man could clear away smaller debris and set up come braces to keep the destroyed roof up, at least temporarily.

It was a slow process, but finally the other man finished. Adel's arms burned from the exertion, but he felt good, even if he was choking on concrete dust. They walked outside, all smiles, and went over to a cooler. The other guy popped it open and tossed Adel a bottle of water, grabbing one for himself.

Adel wiped the sweat off of his brow, and took a drink of the water. It was a beautiful day, puffy white clouds framed by an endless blue sky.

While he took his break and looked up, something caught his eye. It looked like a flaming meteor. Whatever it was, it was dropping out of the sky fast, straight towards the center of town.

Adelaide grimaced, and quickly finished his water. Some kind of chaos was afoot, and he knew Central City had been through enough. This time, here was something he could help with. With a quick kick-off, he pushed himself into the air.

When he flew more closer, he could make out several shapes near a cafe that had been set up. Some of them were clearly human, or at least human-esque, but others were some kind of weird dog Cthulhu mixes. Now, Adelaide wasn't too experienced when it came to monsters, but those definitely appeared to be the sort of things you would warn people about in ancient myths and legends.

Two of the forms he recognized. One had been leading the counter-attack against the Steel Legion. The other was the drunk guy he had a quick sparring session with a couple months ago, and had also been at the battle. Adel was amazed at how much more powerful they seemed to be from then. He had vastly improved, but this was comparing a stream a massive waterfall, that was how much of an energy difference he could sense between himself and them.

They were fighting the dog creatures, but it was the other forms that worried Adelaide the most. There were regular people around, and some of those monstrosities looked like they were getting hungry.

Adel saw one of the slavering beasts move towards a young woman, in her teens like he was. She was paralyzed with fright, and had fallen to her knees, where most of the rest of the regular people had ran. Without hesitation, the young warrior shot towards her, empowering his normal flight with some extra energy.

The beast closest to the woman jumped forward, jaws snapping. Adel flew past the two, grabbing the girl's sweater and arm. She yanked off of the ground just as the monster's jaws slammed shut, closing on (thankfully) empty air. Adel pulled the woman into his arms as he flew, navigating around tables, chairs, and rubble.

With a sudden glow, the dog monster appeared in front of him. Thinking quickly, Adel tossed the girl into the air as hard as he could manage, and spun around. A quick exertion of willpower charged his legs with energy, and he slammed both feet into the slavering beast's head. "Detonate!" he yelled, triggering the ki to explode. The monster's head whipped to the side, and Adel used it's shoulder as a springboard to catapult himself into the air, flying upward to catch the now-falling girl.

He flew to the next street over and dropped the girl off, then turned around in air to go back. He was sure he hadn't done more than annoyed the beast, and Adel knew that help was always appreciated, even if it came from the little guy.

These are no mindless beasts, Roland thought as he surveyed the situation. The way they moved, zig-zagging and flanking him, attempting to corner and take him down like some sort of herd mammal frustrated him. He lashed out with his foot, catching one under the jaw. It made a sound somewhere between a gurgle and a yelp and skidded across the open fields, a good distance.

Snapping jaws came at him from both sides. Roland’s clenched fist glowed white hot with raw mana, crackling to life around his finger tips. He thrust his hand out, a white blast of mana lighting up the air between him and one of the hounds. It exploded in a blinding flash, the dog severed in half. Yellow blood and fleshy debris splattered all over, but Roland paid no heed.

Because the others were upon him. The good thing was, the Father of Swords wasn’t far off at all. Roland jumped back, his fingers curling around the braided leather handle. He yanked it free of the loose soil and spun it around, pulling the cloth scabbard off.

The length of its cobalt blade rippled with energy, the many runes etched along it glowing bright red with raw power. He could feel it pulling on his own mana, drawing into it, fueling its own arcane power. Dark power resided within the blade, but it wasn’t inherently evil, not if its wielder remained calm and used discretion. The only downside was, once the blade was drawn it needed to be whetted with blood. Lucky for Roland, there were foes whose blood would suffice.

Despite its massive size, once drawn it became light, like a feather. He wielded it one hand, swinging it in wide arcs. The first hound that gnashed at him found itself without half of a head and lower legs, crumpling into the dirt, yellow blood gushing out. It didn’t even make a sound. Roland drew the The Son of Swords, the much smaller dagger that complimented the Father, from its sheath on his hip and shoved it into the mouth of a teleporting biter that attempted to take a bite out of his thigh. Fearing that it might still crash its jaws down, he left the Son jammed in there and withdrew his hand, taking the Father two-handed.

He cleaved through two more in swift slashes, dashing along the length of the trench. Until, one teleported in front of him. He tried to sideswipe, but its jaws sunk into his calf and he let out a low grunt. The Father tore it into two pieces with ease and he stumbled forward.

”Shit,” Roland said, looking down at the wound. Crimson stained is pant leg and he felt cold wash over him. He took a stuttering step and fell to one knee. The massive sword fell from his hand, clanking to the ground beside him. Fear hit him like a hammer on an anvil and he grimaced as he realized what was happening to him.

Feeling left his lower body first, turning his legs to wet noodles beneath him. He managed to turn sideways, lying on his side instead of face first into the dirt.

“Chishan. Don’t let them bite you,” he managed to say, as his face and upper body went slack.

As he went to say more, nothing happened. He lie there, feeling nothing out of his body, barely breathing. No doubt the paralysis would soon make it so he stopped breathing. And then, well, he would be dead. Roland cursed himself for being so careless, but that wouldn’t help him now. He just hoped Chishan could do something for him, else he doubted he would be making it back to his daughter.

The Saiyan Inferno
Well, they couldn't fly but they sure could teleport fast.

His ascent into the air was met by the quick reappearing of the canine monsters. They made sure to materialize above him and fall down with the jaws aimed for him, aiming to tear chunks from his form. It was tactical planning that the saiyan never knew base creatures could have. He would be impressed if he wasn't so focused on avoiding their teeth.

He zipped back and forth in the air, continuing to climb towards the heavens. Two seconds; it took the creatures two seconds to soar past him, evaporate and then reappear above him. The timing was phenomenal and deadly and required the super saiyan use every inch of his power. He had to wait for an opening to launch his own assault; one wrong move and he would be mincemeat.

He changed his trajectory, arcing his entire body to be perpendicular to the ground. They continued to pop into existence above and in front of him, their jaws clacking at the empty sir where he had just been. So coordinated and without a means of communication. This couldn't be some random stack. His eyes opened s bit in realization. No, this is a strategic assault. These things lay the ground work for the troops to follow after. The very idea that some... force was launching a new attack on Earth so shortly after the war...

It filled him with fury.

The latest monster popped in front of him, its body surrounded on the thick layer of radiation. As the saiyan came in, he moved to the side to avoid it and its jaw smashed shut on nothing but sir. But he didn't move far; his arm snapped down and grabbed the creature by the back of its neck, his fingers digging in. This caused the creature's mouth to open as it garbled in pain. Half a second; that's all he had before the next one appeared. And right on time, it zapped into existence, furious and snarling...

But instead it found its monstrous compatriot in front of it. Chishan grabbed his prisoner with both hands as its open maw crashed into the throat of the new arrival. With a hard push, he forced the mouth shut. Yellow blood exploded out of the neck of the other creature, along with s half garbled squeal. The force caused the entire head of the victim to pop off and spin wildly towards the ground. With one dispatched, Chishan wasted little time in wrenching the neck of his prisoner in a full circle, completely severing the spinal column.

That's when heard Roland yell out. His eyes snapped to the limp man on the ground, watching as his body betrayed him. Oh Kais, that was the plan. These things paralyze the enemy force and then the next wave would come in to clean up the stragglers. Barbaric!

He really should have been watching in front of him.

He heard the pop and just managed to bring his attention to the front when the next pair of jaws came in. But it was too late to dodge; it was already in his zone. Acting more out of self-preservation, the Saiyan Inferno snapped both his arms up to protect his face and neck. His left hand grabbed the razor sharp grown on its face while his right grabbed the jaw-line. He could feel the sharpened edge biting into his gauntlet, attempting to break through the hardened steel. The sharp rows of teeth gnashed in his face as the two free fell towards the ground, each one wrestling for control.

"You ugly son of a-" He hissed as his eyes began to glow a deep red. As the rows of razor blades parted once more, he unleased two hyper focused beams of energy right down the gullet of the vile thing. The two thing lines popped out the other side of its skull, creating two perfectly round holes. Its tension ceased almost immediately and any life in it was extinguished.

Chishan's back met the ground with s thunderous crash, sending plumes of dirt and grass into the air and ground around them. But he had little time to wait; he shoved the corpse off of his body and leapt up onto his feet. Two separate mental hands extended out of him; one dove into the pouch tied around his waist and pulled a senzu bean out into the open air. The other latched onto one of the creature's teeth and gave it a hard tug, testing it from the gums. With a grunt, he mentally crushed the bean into powder and sent it soaring right into the paralyzed mouth of Roland. No time to waste he told himself as he forced the condensed healing powder down into the stomach of his friend. Unfortunately, the saiyan couldn't force the man's stomach to digest the gift he had given; he could only hope that it hadn't frozen up as well.

But in case it had, he needed an alternative. "Scan and identify hazardous chemicals. Locate possible healing solvents compatible to identified toxins." He said aloud to his scouter, holding up the tooth on front of him. The green lens flickered to a digital reticule and began to process the object.

They had seemingly won this battle. But what was waiting in space to follow after?

Adelaide made good time back to the battle, but it seemed like it was already over. The Saiyan was standing over the corpses of the remaining dog beasts, but the other alien was lying on the ground nearby.

The Saiyan didn't appear too incredibly concerned with his erstwhile ally, so Adel decided that it was probably for the best not to pursue the matter. He could still sense Roland's energy, even guttering as it was, so death seemed unlikely.

For things like this to take out a fighter as powerful as he is..., Adel thought, This can't be just a random thing. Space Dogthuhlus don't just appear. With that in mind, Adel decided to try to see what, if anything, the other fighters knew about this situation.

Adelaide lightly touched down a short distance from Chishan and started walking towards him. "Um, yes, hello," he said, tripping over his words, "I didn't mean to bother you, but, um, yes, I got the last civvie out," Adelaide pointed over to where he dropped the girl off, then at Roland, "Ah, yeah, is he going to be okay? Also, the hell were those space dog monsters?" With that, Adelaide slapped himself on the forehead, "Yeah, sorry. Let me try that again as less of an idiot. My name is Adelaide. Um, sir, we met before, when we counter-attacked the Steel Legion. Well, we didn't really meet, just that we were both, um, there," Adelaide made a short bow, "I am glad to see that you are well. I mean, well, aside from this." The intense presence of the Saiyan in front of him was ruining Adel's ability to communicate effectively.

The young fighter moved over to the monster with the holes out the back of it's head. "Do you think it's the Legion? I mean, I know this isn't their style, using 'organics', but you never know, right?" Adel scratched his eyebrow. Having to figure out why someone was attacking was much harder than simply fending off the attack. Unfortunately, Adelaide Peters didn't have an understanding of interstellar, well, anything, really. That kind of put a hindrance on his whole 'deductive reasoning' plan.

What didn't make sense to Adelaide was why would they attack Central City. It was already devastated from previous invasion attempts. It was the tactical equivalent of attacking a fort that had already been blown to rubble by artillery. He gestured towards the monsters with a stray hand. "I'm pretty sure I'm missing something. Probably a lot of things. Why do this?"

With a sigh, Adel looked up at the sky. It was still as beautiful as before, still as clear. Now, though, there seemed to be a menace in the clarity. Something out there wanted a fight, and Adelaide was more than happy to oblige.

"Scan and identify hazardous chemicals. Locate possible healing solvents compatible to identified toxins,” Chishan said.

Roland could feel his body resuming normality. Whatever Chishan had put into his mouth had worked, and fast. He could scarcely believe he was able to pick himself up and rise to his feet. Checking his leg, he noticed that the wound that once marred his flesh now had turned to frew new skin, the only reminder being dried blood on his skin and staining his pants.

Bending over, he picked up the Father of Swords. Rivulets of yellow blood ran down the length of the blade. Its runes were still glowing bright hot. He swept the blade sideways, the blood flinging off in every direction.

“That is one hell of a neurotic those beats have,” Roland said. He rested the big sword against his shoulder. “You saved my ass Chishan. Looks like I owe you one.”

"Um, yes, hello," a stranger said. Roland turned, scratching his unshaven face. He looked like a kid, wearing glasses. But, Roland could sense a measure of strength in him. Much more than ordinary humans. The longer he stared, the more he realized he knew this kid. HIs memories were quite foggy, and vague. Maybe he had been drunk when he met him. People’s faces always became a blur in his memory when he was drunk.

"I didn't mean to bother you, but, um, yes, I got the last civvie out," the kid pointed over to where he dropped the girl off, then at Roland, "Ah, yeah, is he going to be okay? Also, the hell were those space dog monsters?"

“I think I’ll make it,” Roland said as he surveyed the dead beasts. He had left the Son of Swords, the companion to the Father in the mouth of one of the beasts. Spotting the one, which lay in a violent puddle of its own blood, he bent over and fished the companion blade out, being extra careful not to let its teeth so much as scratch him. “As for what these beasts are, who knows. They were sent here by someone though, see that space pod over there. Its different technology I’ve never seen before.”

From the pommel to point the dagger was covered in blood. Roland was forced to use his cape to wipe it clean. He rubbed it hesitantly, frowning in disgust the entire time.

The newcomer slapped himself on the forehead, "Yeah, sorry. Let me try that again as less of an idiot. My name is Adelaide. Um, sir, we met before, when we counter-attacked the Steel Legion. Well, we didn't really meet, just that we were both, um, there," Adelaide said to Chishan. He then gave him a short bow, "I am glad to see that you are well. I mean, well, aside from this.”

Roland sheathed the Son on the scabbard of his belt. He picked up the Father’s cloth scabbard and slid it over the giant blade.

“Keep your senses peeled. I don’t think this is the end. These creatures were just a vanguard, meant to incapacitate whoever came to investigate. I don’t know what they’ll do next, but I don’t think it’s going to be good.”

“They’re rebuilding that city. Let me level it,” Gadr said, his arms crossed as he stared out of his viewport at the blue-green planet below. It took up the entirety of the field of view. Clouds swirled and drifted. Gadr had a fondness for blue planets, they always seemed so serene. Setting foot upon them always proved to be beautiful as well. He was eager to head down there and finish what the dogs had failed. But, it wasn’t his call.

“Senseless slaughter will accomplish little. Our concern was with the powerful warriors that reside here, remember?” Hodr said, his voice giving no hint of emotion, as usual.

“They killed all your Whisper Hounds.”

“That was a miscalculation on my part. The Saiyan, he is far more powerful than I was able to detect through my scans. I am quite amazed, to say the least, that he can reach such power levels without any sort of mechanical augmentation,” Hodr said.

Floating in front of him on a holographic display was Chishan, head to toe, floating like a toy. Hodr spun the model of his body around, various symbols and letters appearing and disappearing around it. He touched a holographic node and suddenly the model turned bright gold, the hair standing on end, eyes becoming emerald green.

After a moment he shook his head and walked over to a circular vault, rapping his fingers on the display there as he punched in a combination. The vault opened with a loud whirring sound. Gadr could see eerie blue light glowing inside. Hodr withdrew a disc, with six sockets, each socket held spherical stone glowing bright. He had never seen the Miracle Stones so alight. Usually, they were dull gray, sometimes with the faintest glow of power. They looked like miniature suns, blazing bright. It hurt his eyes.

“You see, the ley line energies here are so powerful that they are at their maximum potential. We cannot let this opportunity pass us. If the Reclamation is to work, we need to be hasty.”

“Let me kill them then,” Gadr said.

“Fine. Just be swift about it,” Hodr said.

“Before I go, I can do this my way, right?”

Hodr stared at the glowing stones, their blue light reflecting upon his hard facial features. “Do what you must.”

Gadr’s feet pounded on the metal deck as he strode down the long hall, past sweeping angular bulkheads. Doors hissed open in front of him. The armory wasn’t far. He turned left down a side hall and to a giant circular door. Retinal scans picked up his presence and he pressed his hand on a wall panel. The door thrummed to life, sliding open.

His mechanized armor stood like a sentinel warrior, on its stand. It took him a few minutes to put each piece on. They locked together as he fastened them, tucking the helmet under his arm. One a wall rack rested many different weapons, but the one he wanted was his plasma pike. It looked like a long shaft of steel, but when he flicked the switch, it burst to life, a buzzing amethyst blade erupting from the top. He swiped the air with it, the blade buzzing and snapping on the air, leaving the putrid scent of burning ozone lingering.

The Saiyan Inferno
The saiyan's head twisted around slowly as another power approached, his emerald eyes glinting in the sunlight as he beheld Adelaide. This was a human, one that had braved his chances to join Roland and he on the battlefield. And even as he looked over the man, he felt like he had seen him before. Though perhaps he resembled someone else; Chishan didn't truly know.

Movement from his ally caught his attention and he looked over to see Roland finally getting to his feet. Good he thought with a small smile. The senzu bean did its job. Glad to know I don't need to go searching for other elements to cure this mysterious paralyzing agent. And yet, he didn't halt his scouter's scanning. No, in fact it hardened his choice to continue; he wanted to know exactly what had been coating the dagger-like teeth of these monsters.

"Don't mention it, Roland. I know you would have done the same for me," He said quickly to the man's words, nodding softly. It was a small movement that many men shared; one that begged the question 'Are you okay? Are you sure?' without having to actually use the words. Underlying man language.

The newcomer finally spoke, his voice hesitant and his language broken. He was nervous yet by his own words, he braved the canine aliens to save a civilian. Perhaps it was a social anxiety but it was too soon to tell. He waited for the man to finish speaking before he finally turned to him.

"Adelaide. I'm Chishan. No need to call me 'sir'. That makes me sound extremely old," He said, offering a humored side glance to Roland. "Thank you for helping with the crowd. Sometimes its hard to maintain a safety perimeter when you're in the thicket of battle. As for the beasts, I'm with Roland." He walked cautiously over to the pods and kneeled down next to it, eyes scanning over its strange form. "I've never seen this type of technology."

His scouter beeped and he glanced at it. 'No results found' flashed across the screen in big, bold letters. The toxins were completely alien to any database known to galaxy. "Curious," He said softly before his gaze returned to the pod. "Deep scan for structural keynotes and process a blueprint reading on the design. Identify known elements if any," His scouter responded yet again, quickly flashing a red light over the pod to decompress its form onto a digital grid. Then silently it went to work.

"I figured the same thing, Roland," He said, getting to his feet and turning to the two allies. "These creatures came here to incapacitate their enemy so the real force can come down without heavy resistance. Whatever they were heralding..."

"It surely will be coming soon."
