“So you want me to murder the blackheart family?”

Gohan sat with his legs folded criss-cross, his cybernetic arm resting on his knee, his real one loosely gripping a cup of coffee. It’d been a hard few weeks, adjusting to this Universe where virtually everyone was incredibly powerful and the human race had branched out into the stars. In his home Universe, Gohan was one of the strongest around; here, however, he was barely at the strength level of a common Martial Artist. It was utterly terrifying and fascinating.

To help him with the adjustment phase, Capsule Corp. had given him a couple thousand dollars and a loft overlooking the majority of North City. He’d purchased a trench coat, combat boots, four dark blue and black shirts, thermals, and four pairs of military styled pants. His loft included a moderately sized television, a pre-stocked refrigerator, two couches and one arm chair, a bookshelf stocked with books that covered recent scientific advancements, history, current events, and some of the best selling new releases in the fiction, YA, romance, Sci-Fi, and biography sections. He’d been given both a desktop and a laptop, and a few sets of training dummies to help him adjust to the new arm. The building he was in had a gym, which was helping him get back in shape after so long in the hospital and, of course, nearly being slaughtered and then rocketing through the fabric of reality.

It was through a series of news broadcasts and a quick google search of the name ‘Tatsu Markil’ that he’d come across a plea for help; on some Martial Arts Enthusiasts forum, one ‘J_Markil_1973’ had posted numerous threads asking any able Super Warriors (the blanket term for anyone possessing above par power levels, Gohan guessed) to contact her as quickly as possible. Being curious- Tatsu Markil had, apparently, been publically assassinated- Gohan tracked down her phone number and called. They set up a meeting place (a local Starbucks, as it turned out she didn’t live far from North City, and Gohan wanted some god damned pumpkin spiced coffee, because it was certainly not strictly for women) and a time… And, well, here they were.

“Yes,” Jenna said softly. She sounded distant, sad. Not at all angry, just… Bitter. “You might not be the strongest person alive, but you’re certainly powerful enough to handle the Blackhearts. Tatsu was stronger than you, but he was poisoned. It wore him down… made him weak, pathetic. They’ll be expecting me to send someone, but I’ve already sent two warriors ahead of you. They may not expect a third.”

Gohan sipped his coffee, then nodded. “I’ve fought tougher. Hell, I’ve lead entire platoons against enemies three times our strength and came out mostly unscathed. I can handle a couple of would-be Ninjas.” Jenna tilted her head slightly, her icy eyes looking him over. She seemed exceedingly analytical- if Gohan weren’t smarter, he’d believe she were scanning him. But she didn’t have any of the qualities of an Android, and he was picking up an energy source from her. It was like a young plant buried under piles of snow- dampened and hidden, but still there. For now.

“If you go to the Red Road Station- it’s a large rest stop that includes a small hotel- you’ll find Simon Blackheart. He runs intelligence for the Blackhearts- he places tags on trucks, vacationers, anyone of interest who passes by to determine where they are going and who they are. After a few weeks, a representative of the Blackhearts shows up and blackmails the person into working for them, giving them money, selling them a beloved object, or even forces them to become slaves. That’s how they gain so much wealth; they’re one of the prominent families in the North Eastern part of the continent. Soon, they’ll be spreading West; they plan to take over North City as a whole and then fan out across the rest of the world. Killing Tatsu was a statement that they can get away with virtually anything. Murder, slavery- anything.

“So, to prove to them that they aren’t so invincible, we’re going to kill Simon. Once he’s dead, they’ll scatter long enough for one of my other assassins to destroy their headquarters, and for the third to wipe out as many of them as possible. As a bonus, Crin Blackheart is supposed to be visiting the Red Road Station; kill him and it will insure that the Blackhearts don’t recover any time soon. He is their lead assassin and one of their most valued members, aside from Simon.”

Gohan nodded, downed the remainder of his coffee, and stood up, his cybernetic arm resting on the table. “Alright,” he said. His jaw tensed and his eyes closed as he worked out a game plan in his head. Getting the drop on Simon probably wouldn’t be easy… Unless he wreaked enough havoc to throw him off his game. “I’ve-“ Gohan stopped abruptly, hearing a loud cracking sound. He glanced down and saw that the cybernetic hand had squeezed the table far harder than he’d anticipated, crushing the wooden surface. He struggled for a moment, yanking his fingers free, and then raked his real hand through his hair. “I’ve got a plan. I’ll contact you when I succeed.”

He left a wad of money on the table to pay for the damage, buttoned his trench coat, and retreated into the cool morning air.

It was a few hours later that his feet touched the ground again; the wind stirred as he let his energy fade and gravity take back over. The Red Road Station was larger than he’d anticipated; the store/gas station itself was the size of a strip mall, and the hotel was a solid four stories tall. In the distance there was a truck weigh-station, a series of probably cheaper restaurants, and then trees and mountains for as far as the eye could see. Somewhere in here, Crin and Simon Blackheart lay in wait, selecting prey to hunt and control.

The Half-Saiyan wandered inside the store for a bit, examining the various foods and electronics. The magazines near the counter ranged from New York Times-esque papers to porn, the majority of which looked disturbing on multiple levels. He shuddered, then continued wandering the aisles until he tracked down the Hotel check-in. The lady behind the counter was of a dark complexion- black, maybe an islander who got sick of the beach and ocean. She spoke with a very light accent, seeming to have had years of practice masking it. She was lean, but not so muscular as to appear deadly. “Is there anyt’ing I can do for you, sir?” She smiled as she spoke, but the smile was forced, practiced. Her teeth were white, her eyes free of sleep, and her nails neatly trimmed. She was meticulous about her hygiene, despite working at an oversized truck stop.

“I’m here to speak with Simon Blackheart,” Gohan said. He paused long enough to watch her for a reaction- either there was none or she was very well practiced at masking emotions. “I’m a reporter, and an informant told me he and Tatsu Markil were old friends. My boss sent me to get a few words out of Simon before we broadcast tomorrow night.” The lady smiled, typed something into her computer, then handed the ‘reporter’ a keycard.

“This’ll getch’ya into the hotel. You’ll have’ta ask Simon ta’ let ya’ in person-a-ly.”

“Thank you, ma’am,” Gohan said with a half-forced smile. Most of his smiles were forced lately. He slid her a twenty dollar bill, still half-fake-smiling. “You might be the best receptionist this side of North City.” And now came the fun part.

Gohan got to the entrance of the hotel, slid the key in, and before the door could fully open, he pressed his foot to it and shot a wave of energy through the soles of his feet, shattering the glass. He waved his arm, launching a weak barrage of energy that destroyed the cameras and next set of glass doors. He moved through the debris effortlessly, projecting his senses out around him to avoid obstacles and people. There was screaming, but he’d made certain not to damage anything crucial to the building’s integrity, nor did he hit anyone- at least, not lethally. He turned a full circle, taking in the lobby, the people, and… Yep, there it was. The Elevators. He reared back and leaped, coming down hard on the steel doors with both of his feet. They gave way to the elevator shaft, and the Half Saiyan propelled himself upwards. When a descending elevator came into sight, he burst through a set of doors on the third floor, skidded across the hallway, and then glanced at the ceiling. A quick scan told him no one was above him, so he fired a small burst of energy to create a him-sized hole in the ceiling, then leaped up through it.

Finding Simon wasn’t too hard from there. The Half-Saiyan followed a series of wires that twisted into a set of double doors. He forced his cybernetic hand through the door, yanked it off its hinges… And then his vision blurred.

He was watching events from the perspective of an Android. The Android threw the door into the room, following it in and laughing manically. “And now,” the Android was saying, “You die!”

His vision unblurred, and he was standing over a thin, sickly looking man with chocolate-brown eyes. “Ten points,” Gohan said, but he felt as if he was not himself, as if he was one of them. He felt his face grinning, and his mind conjured an image of an Android grinning as it slaughtered one of the Rebels. He shook his head, faltering. “No… No, no, that’s not-“
He hit the ground before the pain registered. Cyan eyes glowed, but otherwise the figure was obscured by black clothing and a face mask, its hair long and pale. It wore a sleeveless leather uniform, countless guns and pockets and weapons strapped to its body. Both of its arms were cybernetic- Gohan suspected its legs and much of its internal organs were as well. The body parts looked drastically more advanced than the arm Capsule Corp. had given him. The figure spoke, and its voice was thick and rich. “Yet another Assassin. Will Markil never learn?” It- he?- took a step forward, flicked its wrist, and gripped a sword that shot out of its left arm. Gohan squirmed backwards as the figure pointed its blade, his mind racing. “Well, like the other two, you will die.”
The figure- Gohan had figured by now that it was Crin Blackheart- lunged, and before the Half-Saiyan truly knew what he was doing, he swatted the sword away with his cybernetic arm, lunged forward, and slammed his organic fist into Crin’s nose. Blood spouted out almost immediately, but that didn’t slow either of them down. Crin gripped Gohan’s shoulders and threw him into the wall, and Gohan launched a Sokidan that Crin dodged, causing it to destroy the monitors lined up at the other end of the room. Simon was scrambling towards the fallen sword, and Crin was sprinting towards Gohan to finish the job. The Half-Saiyan pressed his hands and feet to the wall and propelled himself away from Crin, rolling as he hit the floor and gripping the sword in both hands. Simon skidded to a stop, but not before Gohan drove Crin’s sword through the frail human’s chest. He twisted until he was sure nothing would stop the internal bleeding, then turned his eyes towards Crin.

The Blackheart Assassin was already upon him, hands wrapped tight around Gohan’s throat. Suddenly glass was shattering, and Gohan found himself dangling four stories above the ground. They remained there for a moment, and then Crin spoke.
“You are doing the bidding of a Witch, boy. The devil’s work. How does that make you feel?”
Gohan blinked, then gripped Crin’s wrists. “You’re trafficking humans, you sick bastard. If the devil wants to stop that, then he’s a better man than whatever god you work for.”
Crin’s irises and pupils contracted into slits, and numbers seemed to dance across his eyes. “…You’re holding back power.”

The Half-Saiyan nodded, and before Crin could react, they were both another four stories in the air; Crin was now dangling helplessly, waiting to die. “So Jenna is a witch?”
Crin was still calculating. “She employed us to kill her husband, much as she employed you to slaughter us. With our deaths and his, she has enough power to bring back an ancient evil- a Queen who ruled her nation through disease. If you disobeyed, you died slowly and painfully, consumed by innumerable sicknesses. She was a warlord, and conquered many nations; when she died, she was given a throne in Hell. If she were to return-“

Gohan launched a series of five thin beams of energy through Crin’s skull, neck, and heart, then dropped the lifeless body. It bounced when it hit the ground, many of the more fragile cybernetic parts shattering. Oil and blood leaked outwards, forming a pool. Gohan focused for a moment, his aura flaring up, and then he shot off back towards North City.

He didn't know what this Demon Queen could do, but he had to get a better evaluation of just what she was.
