Vengeance (Read first)
Witch's Brew: Echoes of a Fallen Realm Gohan gnawed on his nails, pacing tirelessly along the mouth of the cavern he'd been living out of. He’d phoned Capsule Corp. to keep his loft locked down until further notice, and had been living out of this stupid hole in this stupid mountain for the better part of a week. Jenna was somewhere deeper within the cavern, lying in comatose. The Half-Saiyan didn't want to risk hunting her down just yet; he wanted to wait, see if the Military could figure it out, and see if this Demon Queen would actually appear at all. The army was certainly prepared. As he’d flown in, he saw numerous platoons patrolling the wilderness, searching for any signs of the Witch. There were experimental mechs at the ready, along with three lines of tanks. There were twelve camps encircling the forest, and eight more scattered within it. No one dared get too close to the mountain- until the Half-Saiyan landed in the middle of their main camp. The soldiers- Planetary Guard, judging from the uniforms- fired, but stopped when they realized it wasn't working. He met with the man in charge- or, rather, the lady in charge. Or, if she wasn't in charge, she was certainly one of the more respected soldiers of this particular camp. She went by Sergeant Stron; short brown hair, dark eyes, and somehow more… Alive than the others. Like she’d retained a sense of her civilian life. Which he was sure most Soldiers did, but she was actively displaying it with a crooked smirk. “You’re one of those Super Warriors, eh?” “If that’s what you call us. If you don’t mind my asking- what’s all this about?” Sgt. Stron laced her arms together behind her back, pacing. Gohan slid his hands into the pockets of his black trench coat, digging his heel into the dirt. “Someone tipped off local authorities to some kind of ‘Demonic Activity.’ After the last few years- what, with that intergalactic war bullshit, the Android attacks, that sudden realization that we’ve been guarded by some Protectorate- we’re willing to believe almost anything. The Avalonians or Avalanians or whatever-the-fuck, they gave us some technological upgrades; a few satellites that can get a read on Power levels, new guns and armor, Scouters… So we put it to use, and we pinpointed a massive source of energy to this mountain. They called us in- the Planetary Guard- first. The military showed up not long after. We’ve been stationed here since Monday, and the energy has only increased in strength. It’s starting to stagnate, and we believe that means it’s about to do… Something.” Since none of the soldiers had clearance to go inside the Mountain, Gohan decided to fly in himself. He set up a sort of camp at the mouth of Jenna’s cave, and he’d been there ever since. Once a day, he flew down to get food and water, but otherwise he stood vigil. He’d gone deeper into the cave only twice, but it was a maze; Jenna’s energy ricocheted off the walls, making it impossible to trace. Which meant they’d have to wait until she, or whatever she was summoning, came for them. The moon rose. Gohan stared at it for a time, imagining one of the full blooded Saiyans on Earth turning into an Ape. He pictured it fighting the military, much like this thing Jenna was summoning would be doing. Gohan would have to kill the Demon Queen before it caused too much damage; he figured if he were anywhere near an Oozaru, he’d probably kill it, too. Hell, if he was standing next to a petty abusive human, he doubted he’d be able to hold himself back from killing it. That was something he was starting to realize; he had no tolerance. If something was volatile, it was as good as dead. He slept for a time, and his dreams put him in the position of an Android slaughtering innocents. He watched his arms ripping rebels and scientists limb by limb, heard his voice laughing hysterically as he did. And then he saw his reflection; half of his face was missing, the automated bits and pieces whirring loudly. He felt sick. He felt violent. He placed his palms to his head and let the energy consume him, killing him. The Half-Saiyan sprang out of bed, falling to his hands and knees and vomiting his dinner out over the edge of the cave. He lay there for some time, breathing deeply and letting the cool air dry the sweat that had encased his body. He couldn't tell if mere minutes or several hours had passed before he stood. He tugged his shirt on over his bare chest, pulled socks and boots on over his feet, and wrapped his coat around his body. He’d taken to sleeping in pants and nothing else; it made for less laundry ruined by cold sweats and puke. Gohan flew around the perimeter of the wilderness for a time, his eyes closed as the wind whipped against his skin. Ever since the day he lost his arm, he’d had nightmares. At first they were simple; he would dream that he was going to school, going to class, and as he sat down he would go to write something. As he’d lift the pencil, his arm would fall off. He’d go to pick it up, tears and confusion rippling through him. The entire class would laugh, and then the teacher would laugh, and he’d look up and the teacher would be an Android. As the war against the Androids raged on, the nightmares grew steadily worse. Eventually, it got to the point where he’d stay awake for days at a time to avoid them. And that went on until the Escape. Only recently had they evolved to a point where he was the Androids. And that… That terrified him. Perhaps more than anything else. Something inside of him was convinced it was the villain, or that it was becoming the villain. Or, worse, something inside him wanted to be evil. Wanted to slaughter innocents. By the time his head was clear enough to focus, the sun was rising. He circled back towards Stron’s camp and touched down in time to see several soldiers sprinting towards something on the outer edge of the camp. Three more zoomed by him, and a fourth- Stron herself. He reached out and caught her by the shoulder, bringing her to a complete stop. She looked offended, annoyed, and tired, but still had the strange… Humanness, to her expression. “What’s happening?” Stron gestured towards the edge of the camp. “The Witch. It’s not the main source of energy, but something crawled out of a cave near the ass end of the Mountain, went on a rampage and wiped out one of the camps. It carved a path through the woods straight towards us, and now…” There was a scream, and they both took off running in the direction of the thing. It was small, maybe 4’6”, and it looked something similar to human. Its eyes were black and purple, blood dripping from the sockets. Its nose was missing, replaced with snake-like slits, and its lips were gone. Its gums had receded up into its skull, making its teeth look that much sharper. Four tendrils waved behind its back, crackling with energy. Already two soldiers were dead, and the thing was… Feasting on them. Stron opened fire, and Gohan rushed forward. His aura burst to life as he brought his knee to the thing’s face. There was a contained explosion between his knee and the creature’s nose that sent the creature flying. The Half-Saiyan skidded to a stop, faced both is palms in the direction he’d sent the thing flying, and unleashed a volley of energy. There was an explosion of blue and red and green, and then smoke. Before it even cleared, he knew the monster was still living. It was after him before he could blink; two tendrils wrapped around his legs, sending massive amounts of electricity into his skin. The tendrils contracted, and then the creature was literally on him, wrapping its other two tendrils around his shoulders and pulling itself down. Its mouth hung open, ready to rip into Gohan’s neck. The Half Saiyan’s eyes widened, and he let loose a scream. The creature seemed to take this as a sign of surrender; a sign that Gohan had given up any chance of surviving. And that was its mistake. Its grip loosened, and Gohan screamed again; this time, however, energy rippled up from his throat and consumed the thing’s skull, vaporizing it and sealing the neck shut from the intense heat. Gohan stumbled backwards. His muscles were locking up, and the pseudo-nerves in his cybernetic arm were malfunctioning. He fell backwards and found himself staring at the sky. Stron stood over him. Then there were medics, an engineer, and finally, blackness. WC: 1488 |

He awoke in a tent, to the smell of blood and the sound of clanging metal. He turned his head and found that one of the Planetary Guardsmen was evening out dents in the cybernetic arm, while another was adjusting the wiring within. Gohan realized that he was naked, and shortly after that, realized he was covered in a green ointment. He couldn’t feel the burns or any of the damage that the imp-like creature had dealt to him, which meant that this ointment was either numbing him or healing him. He opened and closed his hand, felt everything, and concluded that it was healing him. One of the Doctors noticed that he was awake and dosed him with some kind of drug. The world began to spin. The colors ran together, until they consumed each other and became black. His eyes lost focus, and then he was unconscious again. The Half Saiyan had many dreams. He was slaughtering soldiers for nothing more than his own enjoyment. He was destroying cities. He was himself, with only one arm, fighting against an Android version of himself. He was holding a dead Rebel in his arm, screaming into the night, his aura raging, drawing the attention of the Android Army. He was angry. He was staring at his best friend's disembodied head. Watching an Android laughing hysterically , holding the rest of his friend's body. It must have been at least half a day before Gohan woke back up, because it was night time again. Only one Planetary Guardsmen remained in the tent, and she was asleep. The Half Saiyan stood, noting that he was now in a patient's robe and that the ointment was gone. He was mostly healed, besides a handful of tiny scratches and bruises. His cybernetic arm was fixed, and even seemed to be functioning a bit better than before. He'd have to learn to maintain it from whoever it was that fixed it. After locating clothes- an un-tagged and badgeless Planetary Guard uniform- the Gohan let his mind stretch outwards, and made note of all of the strongest energies in the area. There was one ever-present one somewhere deep within the mountain, and it was starting to expand outwards. Outwards. As if on cue, the ground began to shake. The sleeping soldier awoke with a jolt, looked around wildly, and saw Gohan standing dead still, garbed in an unmarked Planetary Guard uniform. Numerous emotions rose through the soldier- confusion, annoyance, offense, fear, and anger. She stood, levelled her gun, and said, "What the hell are you doing up? And why the hell are you wearing one of our uniforms?" Gohan turned slowly, his aura gradually brightening from translucent to a thick, dark blue color with each passing second. "Because," he replied, "I'm not fighting in a robe." The Soldier looked confused. She blinked, and suddenly the Half Saiyan had materialized before her, effortlessly taking the gun from her hands. He was experiencing a massive rush of energy, a sudden increase in strength. He'd not felt one quite like this in some months, since the last time he was brought to the brink of death by one of the Android Army's officers. Before his Universe's Vegeta had died, the self proclaimed Prince had explained that Saiyans possessed a trait called 'Zenkai.' When a Saiyan is heavily wounded in battle, his strength drastically increases once he recovers. Gohan suspected this rush was exactly that; Zenkai. He moved the flaps of the tent aside, got a running start, and leaped. He flew towards the Mountain at top speeds, his aura trailing behind him. The energy at the center of the Mountain was growing stronger and stronger. A storm was brewing overhead, and dozens of mechs, four tanks, and at least four hundred soldiers were converging around its perimeter. The Half Saiyan touched down at the front lines, just next to Srg. Stron. He glanced at her, and she nodded at him. "When whatever this is breaks out, open fire." Stron nodded. "Obviously," she said. "Hopefully it's shocked by the sudden bombardment; I'll use the moment to hunt down Jenna. Hopefully killing her will banish this... thing." "You could have done it already. Blown up the mountain, slain Jenna in the process," Stron pointed out. "...No... No, I couldn't have. You'd all have fired at me. And besides that, I don't think I'm strong enough to blow up a Mountain. Or, I mean... I don't know. I wasn't functioning at my best; it would've just made a dent." Stron shrugged. "Too late now." Gohan nodded. Someone shouted an order, and then others echoed it, and then there was silence. A crack opened up in the mountain. Gohan closed his eyes, focusing until he pinpointed Jenna. She was deep underground, and there was a massive layer of energy between him and her. The Demon Queen, and maybe even a small army of Demons. Fire erupted from the crack, and more cracks formed. Gohan tensed and relaxed his body, preparing. The Earth shook, and a wave of energy bust upwards, vaporizing the mountain and creating an opening big enough for... Whatever this thing was to crawl out. Gunfire. Explosions. Screaming. Energy. Gohan sprinted, then leaped, then flew. Fire and bullets whizzed and whipped by him. Those Imp-things were everywhere, but they seemed weaker than the one from earlier. And, there, floating some fifty feet in the air, was the Demon Queen. All down her spine were the same electrified tendrils. Fire rippled around and from within her- not an aura, but literal hellfire. Her skin was crisped in a way that made her look like a living plague corpse. Her hair was a a brighter, hotter fire than her aura. She was clothed in golden armor, and wielded axes in either hand. Somewhere below the Earth was Jenna, her soul and the souls she'd consumed acting as a portal for the Demon Queen and her small army to pour into the World. Gohan was now standing on the edge of the crater, staring down into flames. More and more demons were crawling forth. Jenna was no where in sight- in other words, she was deep inside the fire. The Half Saiyan took a deep breath. He dove. And then the world was no more, and instead he found himself plummeting into the depths of someone's personalized Hell. WC: 1063 TWC: 2551 |

The first sensation that the Half Saiyan recognized was burning. It was constant, unending, and all consuming. When he opened his eyes, he saw that his body was not actually being harmed- the sensation was meant only to torment those who were experiencing it. The second thing he noticed was the screaming; all around him, invisible bodies screamed and moaned into the hellfire. There was no real language being shouted, just guttural, animalistic bellowing. Gohan touched down on solid ground after a few minutes of plummeting. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but fire. Occasionally something would dart through the flame- spirits, imps, demons, even a few soldiers who must have fallen in from above. The Half Saiyan concluded that this must not be actual hell, but the bottom of the crater that the Demon Queen had formed. The witch's fire was rapidly converting everything it touched into a hellish nature, but it was not, in fact, Hell. He walked. He walked for some time- maybe minutes, maybe an entire hour- before something finally happened. From the fire, a hand grasped his ankle and pulled weakly. Gohan glanced down at the hand before yanking his foot away, turning and lunging into the fire. He yanked at the hand and came away with the body of a crisp corpse. Or, it looked like a corpse, besides the blinking sapphire eyes. It turned its gaze to him, opening and clothing its charred lips before finally uttering a word. "Late." The Half Saiyan tilted his head and squinted, studying the mostly dead thing. "What do you mean, 'late'?" "She is... Free." The thing struggled to raise its free arm, and pointed to Gohan's right. "That... way..." The Half Saiyan nodded, then grasped the half corpse's neck in his hand. It mouthed the word 'Thanks,' before he twisted his wrist and broke its neck. It would not suffer, except maybe in real Hell. He took off running in the direction the corpse had pointed, and it wasn't long before the witch's fire dispersed. He was in a clearing that was surrounded by some sort of energy that was keeping the flame at bay. A large cauldron lay on its side, its contents spilled all across the mossy floor. Leaned over the cauldron was Jenna, her body thin and frail. Red energy wafted up from her body, through the energy barrier, and out through the flames. The Demon Queen was still drawing on the souls that Jenna had consumed, but soon she would be siphoning power from the souls of the Planetary Guard. Killing Jenna probably wouldn't do much now- it might weaken the Demon Queen for a moment, but Gohan had a feeling that it was beyond something as simple as slaying the energy source now. He moved to Jenna quickly, first checking for a pulse- there was one- and then shoving her from the cauldron and onto the mossy, potion-soaked ground. She stared at him blankly, and anger welled up within him. He'd taken the assassin job to avenge this woman's husband, but she'd been the one to kill him. She'd used Gohan as a means to acquire two additional souls that were just powerful enough to sustain her spell. He'd been used, and it disgusted him. Jenna began to laugh, and it caused the Half Saiyan to snap. He crushed her wrist under his boot, and her face contorted in pain, but she kept laughing. "You're too late... Too late. It is done. It is done and you are too late, and now she is free, and the World is hers. No more wars from the stars; she will slay them all. The more she consumes, the stronger she becomes. She is free. You are too late and it is done." Gohan stood for still, his mind racing back into the war against the Androids. He remembered how they spread, consuming everything around them. They were unstoppable. He would not let this Earth fall to the same apocalyptic fate as his. Anger welled up within him. The entirety of existence suddenly seemed sharper. Vivid. Real. It was as if he was Awake for the first time. It was as if he had Awakened. He stared at Jenna, and he could practically hear the blood coursing through her veins. Every little heart beat, every breath- it was all turned up to full volume. The colors of her skin and blood were sharp; it was as if his eyes were those of an Eagle. He brought his foot down on her chest and ended her life. All at once, the energy barrier began to collapse. Fire poured into the clearing, but Gohan rocketed upwards. The awakened feeling was beginning to fade, and the Half Saiyan knew he had to use it while it was present. He was free of the flame within minutes, and he realized that much of the wilderness had been scorched. The Planetary Guard was being pushed back, but it looked as if no more than a few dozen soldiers had fallen. Only two mechs lay in ruin, the rest still working vigorously. He kept flying, though. He focused all of the excess energy into his palms, reared back, and surged onward. Soon he was within arm's reach of the Demon Queen. With a roar, he let loose a condensed sphere of energy that slammed into the Demon Queen at full force. She was thrown higher into the air as the sphere drilled into her abdomen. Gohan sped up, smashing into the sphere and causing it to explode. Both the Queen and Gohan plummeted to Earth. The Half Saiyan managed to redirect his course, maneuvering until he was above the Demon Queen. He grasped her arms in his hands and moved her directly above his head, facing the ground. She lashed out at him, trying to gain the upper hand... But then they smacked into the ground, and her spine snapped, and Gohan's real and cybernetic arm snapped, and the world turned into a searing white inferno. Gohan was in a white room, strange people in blue uniforms talking rapidly and pressing needles into his skin. He was floating in a green tank, various people at computers letting out sighs of relief as a machine began to beep. He was in the middle of a room that whirred loudly, as if hundreds of machines were working all at once. Something sharp pressed into his armless shoulder. He was an Android, who saw his reflection and self destructed out of disgust. A child without an arm, looking for his mother. A man without a body, screaming into a flaming wasteland. And then, finally, he was propped up in his bed in his loft in North City. Two soldiers stood at the other end of the room, guarding the door. The TV was on, blaring the News. "An inferno has consumed the local National Park; due to a massive crater, it's theorized a meteorite of some kind smashed into the mountain. The Planetary Guard has spent the last week on clean up, putting out fires and rescuing any wildlife that can be rescued, and scouting for survivors. Some conspiracy theorists claim that this was not some freak accident, but the work of some sort of demonic force. After all, with the sudden seat on the Avalon Protectorate- and the revelation that we are neither alone in the Universe, nor quite advanced enough to rule over it, has rocked our foundations... Whose to say that Demons aren't real?" Gohan groaned. One of the guards at the door glanced in his direction, then murmured something into her helmet. A few minutes later, an older soldier- a grizzled looking man with short gray and black hair, a clean shaven face, and one bright green eye (the other was milky, rather obviously blind) marched into the loft. He prodded at Gohan's arm, midsection, legs, and jaw. He stuck a needle into the Half Saiyan's arm, waved one of the guards over, and told them to go have it tested for any sort of infections. He injected a dark blue liquid into Gohan, which chased away the sleepyness and woke him up entirely. "Names Doctor Mic'. Used to be a foot soldier; fought on the front lines and took more bullets than you can imagine, but survived. Caught some kinda poison in muh' left eye, triggered some kinda cataract growth. Could wear an eyepatch, but I'm too damn prideful. Anyways. You've been out for a week or so now; we managed to trap the... Erg... 'Demon Queen'-" he used air quotes to emphasize that he was skeptical of the Queen's nature- "- and had her shipped to a lab pretty far under the ocean. They're finding out what they can about her biology and origins, then dumping her in the Marianas Trench. Even if she gets free of her cage and survives the pressure down there, she can't spread any fire, and we've concluded she needs fire to move fly; she'll be more or less stranded for a long while. "On that note, you. You're the first Super Warrior we've actually gotten close to who hasn't run off the second they see us. I've met a member or two of that... Protectorate thing... And they're strong. The scouters they gave us? Couldn't even track the numbers without shutting down. We figure if we can trace the DNA of just one Super Warrior, we can replicate that sort of power in the common soldier-" "No." "Excuse me?" "What's your name again?" "Doctor Mic'. Or, uh, Dr. Michael Leroy." "Yeah," Gohan murmured. He recognized the name. Dr. Leroy; he was an associate of Gero. He'd been one of the ones to develop the Cyborgs, the half-human, half-android species. "I'm not cooperating with you. Last time someone cooperated with you, it brought the human race to extinction." Leroy looked genuinely offended, then angry. "Listen here, boy, just because you helped nullify the threat of that... Queen thing-" Gohan shoved his covers aside, grabbed Leroy by the collar of his coat, and lifted him into the air. "I'll work alongside the Planetary Guard to save people. I'll help them salvage technology. I'll help them learn to use Ki. But I will not give them a short cut to becoming what you call Super Warriors, and I will not let you be in charge of me. In my Universe- I'm sure you cajoled that information from Capsule Corp.- you helped bring about the Androids. You were the cause of my being here." Leroy paled at the mention of Androids. "I... I once worked alongside the Red Ribbon Army, but I've since changed-" Gohan spat. He looked at the two guards, who had their guns trained on him. "You let this trash into your military?" They shifted uncomfortably. "I don't doubt he's got more than enough of my blood to start his work. I want to speak with whoever is supposed to be in charge of this man, and then I want to see his work so far." They made no movement. He looked at Leroy, who was still dangling helplessly in the air. The Half Saiyan threw him in the direction of the two guards; Leroy rolled, and was wise enough to stay laying down. "Now." Grudgingly, they complied. It was an hour and a half before the helicopter landed. It was another hour before Gohan was leaned over a railing, examining three soldiers who were being rehabilitated into new, 'Super Powered' bodies. They weren't massive, but their muscles were more toned and their hair had darkened. They were stronger than most of the soldiers around them, but not stronger than Gohan himself. He figured it was mostly Saiyan DNA that was affecting them; Gohan was Half Saiyan, but his human blood watered down a lot of the perks of Saiyan blood. In these soldiers, his human blood combined with theirs, drowning the Saiyan blood that much more. Their hair, while darker, was not black. Gohan concluded that they weren't as dangerous as he'd first suspected. So long as Leroy didn't get his hands on a more powerful test subject, and so long as he didn't secure any pure Saiyan blood, these soldiers were... Well, at the worst, they'd be able to handle fights a bit better. The blood didn't seem to affect their Ki, which meant that all it did was boost their physical attributes a bit. He glanced at Leroy, then nodded. "This... Is fine. Do not experiment further with my blood, or I will find and destroy your research." Leroy looked confused and angry. Gohan crossed his arms. "If I find out that you're working with the Red Ribbon Army, it's your head." Before any of them could say anything, he left. They'd be in contact sooner or later, asking him to teach the Super Soldiers to use Ki. He might oblige. For now, though, there was a particular someone that Gohan had to seek out. It took three hours of flight, two buses (he had to sleep), and a boat just to reach the place where the Hermit was known to live. It took another hour of flight to locate his island. When the Half Saiyan finally touched down on the sand, it was the third night of his journey. The ocean was calm tonight, and the sky cloudless. He could see all of the stars, and even just make out a Space Station that was in low orbit. It was, strangely, beautiful. Gohan found Roshi inside, curled up by an old TV, a pile of magazines (dirty) and books (large text books. Maybe he was going back to college?) on either side of his chair. He was snoring loudly, but awoke quickly when the Half Saiyan tapped his shoulder. "Whu- G... Gohan?" "Not exactly. Or, uh, not the one you might know. I'm from another reality- I'm sure you've heard about some strange 'time machine' on the news by now- and I've come here to train with you." Roshi waved tiredly, gave a thumbs up, then passed back out. Gohan blinked, shrugged, and helped himself to the Turtle Hermit's kitchen. After a quick meal of leftover turkey and potatoes, the Dimensional Traveler found an empty corner of the house- there were various students scattered about, also snoring heavily- and rested.
