NPC List: Ms. Wormwood - One of the teachers for Hiro's grade. She's not a particularly good teacher, and she often sneaks off campus for cigarette breaks and to run personal errands during the school day. Aya - Hiro's mother. A beautiful and kind woman, her parenting style contradicts that of Hiro's father. She discourages Hiro from fighting back against the bullies at school, instructing him that he should never use his great inner strength to harm other people. She spends most of her days working long hours for the village doctor as his assistant, but always spoils Hiro when she does have the opportunity to see him, which is usually early in the morning or late at night. Glenn - Hiro's father. Although not a particularly successful man, Glenn lived by a certain code of discipline that he held Hiro up to as well, and punished him appropriately when Hiro was in violation of said code. Glenn also worked long hours, though not quite as long as Aya, at a nearby foundry. Because he would be exhausted after working near hot fumes and metals all day long, he would become very irritated when his daughter, Luna, would not have dinner prepared for him when he arrived home at dusk. He would sometimes drink with his coworkers before coming home and would seek out someone to punish; Hiro would typically intervene and redirect his father's wrath towards himself. Jessie - Jessie is Hiro's closest friend. The two are completely inseparable; it was quite the oddity to see one without the other. Almost every night of the week one would be sleeping over the other's house. Jessie is a couple years older than Hiro, though he's actually a grade behind him. This plays a role in their relationship - Jessie often needs to scare away the bullies that pursue Hiro. He's not the smartest kid in his age group, but he is by no means unintelligent, and his lack of success in school is mostly a testament to his situation at home. His parents often go away for long periods of time, leaving him no food or money, and no word of when they will return. During this time, it's often difficult even for Hiro to get a hold of him, as he becomes very withdrawn when he is deeply depressed. Jessie is captain of the football team. Ryu - Another friend of Hiro, Ryu is the epitome of a bookworm - the lenses in his glasses must have been almost half-an-inch thick. He's by far and away the smartest kid in his class, and often does Hiro's homework when Hiro struggles to keep up, even giving him a 'friendly viewing angle' when test-taking. Jet - Jet is a good friend of Hiro's, though the two rarely have time to spend together outside of school. Jet plays for three sports teams during the school year and is enlisted in several student organizations. He's considered mature beyond his years, both physically and mentally, and has the most positive reputation of all the student athletes in the school. Orphen - Orphen is the class clown. He transferred to the same school as Hiro and his friends earlier in the year, and quickly found some strangers to call friends in Hiro and Jessie, although everybody quickly grew to liking him and what his sense of humor and reckless behavior would bring to the classroom. The kids usually hang out at Orphen's house after school, and everybody knows his parents very well because of how involved with the school they are. Luna - Luna was Hiro's older sister. She finished school a couple of years ago, but her father, Glenn, refuses to let her get a job. He doesn't want her to move out because she is the only one who can cook and clean while her parents work. Luna doesn't usually complain, because of everything her parents do to provide for them...although she feels that she's ready to prepare for herself, and maybe even her own family. Naomi - Naomi is the only female in Hiro's group of friends. Hiro has a childish crush on Naomi, but hasn't shared it with her or any of his friends. When Naomi was a child, Hiro and Ryu together broke into her house, which was engulfed in flames, to retrieve her. For this, Naomi feels she owes a life debt to Hiro, and it pains her to know she can do nothing to stop the bullies from attacking him. Domon - The biggest bully in the school, Domon particularly enjoys pestering Hiro. He was the biggest kid in Hiro's grade by a long shot, and nobody dared to stand up to him. Besides humiliating and robbing kids in his grade, he would often force them to do things against their will. Steiner - Domon's flunkie. Steiner is almost as big as Domon, and twice as dumb. Dr. Jaeger - ??? Dr. Ansem - ??? Turtle Hermit - A world renowned martial arts master. |

“Hiro…” Hiro was distracted. All day long he'd a sinking feeling in his gut that something was going to happen. Something...terrible. It must be nothing… he persuaded himself. Only 20 minutes of school left…nothing can possibly go wrong after I get home... “Hiro..?” The students in the classroom turned around in their seats to face Hiro, whom was clearly lost in thought. But still…I’ve never had a feeling like this before. It’s like…I’m certain that something bad is going to happen... ...I’ve never been so certain of anything. Hiro hadn’t been himself all day; this was highlighted by the fact that he passed on lunch, something that had alerted Hiro’s friends; Hiro typically had a fierce appetite. “Wake up, Hiro…” his teacher commanded, growing impatient. Hiro snapped out of his daze – he wasn’t quite sure if it was his friend, Ryu, kicking his shin under the table, or the volume of the teacher’s voice that awoke him. “So, Hiro, I don’t suppose you have an answer to my quesiton…” his teacher asked. “…” Hiro was silent. “I’m disappointed, Hiro. You’re not the best student in the class but at least you usually pay attention. Can anybody else tell me what’s the formula for the Pythagorean theorem? …Yes, go ahead Sara…” the teacher switched targets. “Hey man, are you alright?” Ryu whispered to Hiro. “You’re not yourself today…” “I know…sorry I’m fine…I just have this fee—“ SSSSSSTTTTTTOOOOOOOMMMMMMMPPPPPPP A deafeningly loud crashing sound cut him off. The teachers and the students in every classroom in the entire school fell completely silent for a moment. The lights flickered once and then faded completely, as evidently the school had lost power, and many of the students began to express their fears quietly amongst their peers. Hiro turned around when he felt a hand on his shoulder, though he couldn’t see his own hand in front of his face… Naomi was sitting behind me, he remembered. |

“Did you hear that noise, Hiro?” Naomi asked. She, like most of the students in the classroom, was startled by the power outage. “Relax,” Hiro said quietly. “That sound was probably just a power line falling down. That would explain the outage, right?” The students began to whisper over each other, and then began to talk over each other. “Be quiet!” Their teacher, Ms. Wormwood, barked. “All of you wait here; I’ll be back in just a minute.” She fumbled through her purse in the darkness until she found a cigarette lighter. “I’m going to see what the administration wants us to do about classes for the rest of today,” she said before she walked into the hallway and began navigating towards the administration offices with one hand against the wall. “Pretty creepy, huh!” said Orphen. “We’ll definitely get out of school early today! What could we possibly learn in pitch black?” “Shhh!” Naomi hushed Orphen. Anxious as she was, it seemed appropriate that she wasn’t in the mood for jokes. “Jeez…sorry Naomi…” Orphen apologized, having not realized that some students, like Naomi, were startled. The students fell silent, and minutes seemed to turn into hours. Hiro was putting on a façade; maintaining his composure on the outside to try and comfort Naomi, but on the inside he knew that no power lines fell. It couldn’t be a coincidence…he was certain from the moment he woke up that today would be horrible. The students remained silent and waited for their teacher to return. It wasn’t long before the classroom door swung open. “Alright kids, get your backpacks if you can find them and follow my voice to the front of the classroom. Obviously, I can’t teach you in darkness, so it looks like you kids lucked out…no more classes today.” She explained. Most of the students cheered…Hiro and Naomi remained silent. |

Naomi located Ryu and Hiro as the students began to funnel out of the classroom and inserted herself between them, grabbing each of them by the hand. “This way we won’t lose each other!” she explained. They would have added Orphen to their chain, but he has to sit far away, in the front of the classroom, because he’s always in trouble. It would be too difficult to find him. The three followed their teacher, as did the rest of the students, into the dark hallway. It was terrifyingly silent and dark in the narrow corridor, and some kids began to panic and push their way to the front of the line in an effort to be the closer to the adult-figure teacher. STTTTOOOOOMMMMPPPPP The crashing noise again echoed and rattled the building. This time it was much closer; so close, in fact, that the ground shook and some students were actually knocked off of their feet. Everyone was silent for a moment. Then the students in the back of the line began to push harder. The teacher, too, was terrified, and wasn’t sure what to say to the students. When the shock that had overcome the students dissipated, fear was all that remained. “I want my mommy!” exclaimed a younger student. It was just now that Hiro realized there were other classes in the hall, as well. They must have been in the main hall…that meant it was a straight line to the exit. “I’m scared!!” “What was that noise!?” But if this is the main hallway, why can’t I see the light at the end of the hall…. Hiro pondered. It’s noon….it should still be daylight outside... The teachers tried to encourage the students to approach the exit with haste, but most of the students were either completely petrified with fear or could just manage to shuffle their feet. Hiro and Naomi realized that they were pulling along Ryu. STOMP This time the sound was incredibly loud, but there was no echo. Ryu, being the bookworm that he was, understood the way that sound travels. “That sound….whatever it is….it’s right on top of us!” He exclaimed. Just then, something incredibly large and heavy struck the ceiling of the main hall from the outside, puncturing a large oval-shaped hole in the building. Hiro could make out only one thing above him while the dust from the debris settled - gazing down upon him was a pair of giant, glowing, crimson red eyes. |

The death toll was massive. Large, heavy pieces of brick and metal fell from the ceiling with enough force to flatten anything under them. Blood sprayed in every direction, drenching those that were not immediately killed in the collapse. Some students were knocked down by stray limbs that were flung towards them at high speeds. Hiro’s eyes remained fixed on the hole in the ceiling while he waited for the debris to settle. The first peculiar thing he noticed was that the sky behind the figure was a shade of dark blue, as it would be on a bright, starry night. He looked on in disbelief as he began to decipher the figure towering before them. “That’s….that’s…..!” one student began. “That’s a giant monkey!!!!” Ms. Wormwood finished. The students could hear the terror in her voice. “Everyone, run straight for the exit!!” she instructed. The ape was huge - at least 17 meters tall. Its roar was terrifying, as was its piercing red gaze. It's fur was wet and appeared to be greased together, in the way that coagulated blood makes hair adhere to itself. Hiro had a sort of sixth-sense reaction, and was just able to avoid a hurling piece of debris angled towards his direction. He refused to let go of Naomi’s hand, and in an effort to save both of them, he yanked her with him to the side. He narrowly avoided the projectile. Hiro turned his head from the beast, which remained still in the moonlight as he watched the earthlings scatter throughout the now-illuminated hall. Hiro was squeezing Naomi hand as tight as he possibly could. “L..Let’s get to the exit…” his voice was nearly silenced by fear. He took one step forward, and was at first confused, and then horrified, when he realized that Naomi’s arm had almost no weight to it whatsoever. He let go of her hand, and heard the sound of her bloody, wet arm plopping flat onto the floor. Hiro fell to his knees. “No...Naomi…” he muttered to himself as he tried to fight back his tears. He quickly failed, and began sobbing aloud. The situation had become terrifyingly real. Ryu, who was separated during the breach, recognized the sound of a distressed Hiro. He looked around frantically, and although the hall was now illuminated, he couldn’t make eye contact with his friend. Tons of kids were trying to push through the hall, some trampling others, in a desperate effort to get to safety. It was complete chaos, and anyone who wasn’t too petrified to move was only out to save themselves. |

“Leave them alone!” Naomi cried. Domon turned to face her, while Steiner continued to kick Hiro and Ryu, who were each crumpled up into a ball on the ground. “I can’t just let him go…” Domon began to explain to her. “Ryu refused to let me see his science homework. I barely passed...my pops is gonna kill me!” "Well then...maybe you should study more!!" Naomi exclaimed. Domon ignored her and turned back to Steiner, nodding to him. Domon then lept towards Hiro, pinning him down with his knees, the same as Steiner did to Ryu. The bullies began pummeling away while Hiro and Ryu struggled not to choke on their own blood. “……Stop it! ……Stop it! …….Leave them alone! …..Please!” Naomi begged between breaths. The two bigger kids showed no sign of slowing down. Hiro managed to shake an arm free and deal a blow of his own to Domon’s face. Hiro then spat his own blood into his assailants face. Overmatched as he was, Hiro refused to submit to anyone, especially a bully who thought he can take whatever he wants. “Hey you! Pick on someone your own size!” “Yeah, you guys aren’t so tough!” The far off voices would have been the sound of salvation for Hiro and Ryu, though the two were losing consciousness and couldn’t recognize them. Domon turned to Steiner. “Someone wants to play hero…” he smirked. Steiner looked at them. He could just barely identify the figures approaching them, even when he squinted. “We’re way bigger than them Domon. Way bigger. We can take them easy. You’re way tougher than Jessie!” The color flushed from Domon’s face. “Damnit…and that must be Jet with him.” “D’uh…what’s wrong boss, you can take anyone! Right?” Steiner tried to encourage his superior to accept the challenge. Unlike Domon, who could weigh a fair fight against an unfair one, Steiner was under the impression that the two of them together could break anything or anyone on a whim. Domon closed his eyes. “No, Steiner. Let’s go.” He instructed. The two departed together. Domon and Steiner were almost out of sight by the time Jessie and Jet reached Hiro and Ryu. “Cowards! You cowards!” Naomi exclaimed. Jessie slung Ryu over his shoulder, and awkwardly managed to pick up Hiro as well, to take them to the nurse’s office. |

"Hiro!" Ryu cried out. "Hiro!!!" Bedlam continued to unravel around him. It's no use...there's no way I could possibly find Hiro in this mess. I just hope he's not.... "Ryu!!" Ryu turned his head to find a friendly face. He could make him out clearly by the moonlight shining through the breached ceiling to be Jessie. “Jessie!” Ryu cried. “I can’t find Hiro or Naomi!” Jessie looked around for Hiro, but it was impossible to pick out a single child with the countless frantic students stampeding through the hall. He bent down to his knees. “Ryu, hop on.” Ryu didn’t need to ask for an explanation. He understood what Jessie was getting at – if Ryu was able to access a better vantage point, like from atop Jessie’s shoulders, he might be able to spot Hiro. He quickly hopped on, and did his best to scan the area while being swayed side to side by pushing students…. ….nothing. He scanned the area again, this time more slowly…still nothing. There was just no way he could pick out one person amidst the turmoil. Suddenly, Ryu heard his name called once more. He listened again, more carefully to figure out which direction the calls were coming from. Finally, he was able to pick Jet out of the crowd, who was able to see Ryu atop Jessie. Jet hurried over to them while Jessie let Ryu climb off his back. “Guys, we need to get out of here now!!!” Jet exclaimed. “No!” Ryu cried. “Not without Hiro!!” Jessie and Jet shared a concerned look. Nobody wanted to imagine that anything had happened to Hiro but if they tried to wait around for a miracle they’d be reduced to a puddle. Jet stepped towards Ryu and quickly threw him over his shoulder, not giving him a chance to object. “No! Stop it! You can’t leave him!” Ryu cried while he tried to violently shake himself free from Jet’s grip, but it was no use. “Hiro…” |

Domon looked to make sure nobody was around before he pushed open the gymnasium door. He sharply angled his neck to signal Steiner to walk through the door first. Domon followed him through, using his backpack to prop the door open. The afternoon sun was shining down on the athletic fields and a gentle breeze had just picked up. The early fall sun’s gentle warmth felt nice. There was no shade, but Domon and Steiner didn’t mind much. Steiner took a couple steps forward into the large grassy field. “Sure does feel good, feel good to get outta that building, eh boss?” he remarked. Steiner had a tendency to repeat fragments of a sentence or even entire sentences. His attention span was less than phenomenal. Domon reached into his shirt pocket for his pack of cigarettes, flicked the top open, and held the opened pack up to his mouth, carefully biting a single cigarette and pulling it from the pack. With the same hand, he reached back into his shirt pocket and replaced the cigarettes, retrieving a disposable lighter. He inhaled deeply while he lit the end of his cigarette and turned his head upwards to face the sky. He shut his eyes and waited until he could feel the sun’s warmth upon his face before exhaling two thick cones of smoke, one through each nostril. His shoulders dropped. “…..Hey boss, why didn’t we take care of those two punks back there?” Domon turned his head to face Steiner before he opened his eyes. “Not that I don’t think we could take them – don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a doubt in my mind that we’d crush both of them.” He folded his arms, careful not to burn himself with the ember of his cigarette. “I just didn’t feel like beating up all four of them, is all. Guess I’m in a generous mood.” Steiner scratched the back of his head. “Well uh…boss…” he hesitated. “Er…” “Ummm….” Domon grew impatient. “Spit it out!” he insisted. “Well uh…won’t everyone thing you look like a wuss now…you know, or something, something…?” Domon was surprised by Steiner’s comment and his eyes widened. He regained his usual composure quickly, though. “Oh don’t you worry about that.” He dropped his cigarette to the ground and crushed the embers beneath his shoe. “C’mon big guy, let’s get back in there before anybody starts to wonder what’s taking us so long in the bathroom.” He walked to the door and pushed it open, picking up his backpack. “After you…” he gestured with his hand in a sweeping motion. Steiner obeyed, and Domon followed him inside. |

“Hey Steiner! Over here!” Domon shouted down the long hallway. He was careful not to accidentally blow out his cigarette lighter, covering it with his hand. Can’t let that blow out… he thought. Wouldn’t be able to see much in here without this lucky thing… “I’m coming boss! I’m right over here!” he shouted. Obviously Domon couldn’t see anything more than three feet in front of him and Steiner sounded something like forty five feet away. “C’mon…Hurry up! I’m going ahead come down this hall here!” he said as he turned down the hall. Past the gym…through the cafeteria… Domon said under his breath, talking himself through the situation. Everyone was a little rattled after that huge crashing sound and all those screams. He heard the sound of screams ahead…he attributed it to rattled evacuating students. He shook it off. Phew, I can see the light ahead. Looks like we’re gonna make it to…. ….the main hall. Domon turned the corner, and his eyes widened with horror. Through the ceiling in the main hall stood an enormous gorilla, four stories in height. Blood decorated the walls of the hall, and the screams weren’t those of anxious students, but of all the traumatized children trying to squeeze out of the door at the other side of the hall. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a familiar figure curled into a ball on the ground. There was nobody left on that side of the hall, but it was clear he'd been trampled by plenty of frightened students. “Hiro!” Domon shouted, recognizing the severely injured child on the ground. Steiner caught up. After also absorbing the horror of the situation, he turned to Domon. “What do we do boss?” he asked. He sounded desperate, and terribly afraid. “Look…over there. It’s Hiro…” Domon said somberly. “What about ‘im?” Steiner questioned. “He looks either knocked out or dead…he’s toast either way boss! Toast! We gotta move!” Domon dropped his backpack. “Not if I can do anything about it!” he exclaimed, charging towards Hiro in an effort to retrieve him. “You get to the exit, Steiner!” he ordered. Steiner disobeyed, following after his best friend. The distance wasn't that far, but it seemed like an eternity with the gorilla's gaze upon them. He watched as Domon reached Hiro and threw him over his shoulder before turning to Steiner. “Let’s move!” he exclaimed. They both turned for the exit. It would be tough to get through, but they didn’t have any other option. |

The ape appeared to become mobile again. It readjusted, taking two steps. Domon looked up. The ape raised it’s hand behind its head and fixed its terrifying gaze upon Domon and Hiro. The look in his eye denoted that Domon knew his number was up. “I don’t know why I fetched you out…” Domon said to Hiro, not caring that he could not hear him. “I know I messed with you a lot…maybe I just have issues that I was taking out on you…and I know you didn’t deserve it…” Domon closed his eyes and threw Hiro to the ground, several feet away from him. Hiro regained consciousness upon impact, and felt an immense amount of pain run up his spine. He cringed as he helplessly looked up at Domon, completely unable to move any of his limbs. Domon found something to smile about when he saw Hiro open his eyes. “But to tell the truth, I never even disliked you.” He turned back down the hall. “Steiner, get Hiro to----“ He was cut off when the massive fist of the ape descended on him with a force great enough to shake the remaining loose debris from the ceiling. Domon’s fragile human body exploded under the force, and blood flooded from each direction of the ape’s fist. Hiro was drenched in his savior’s blood. Horrified, Hiro showed no reaction. He was completely incapacitated by fear. “No!” Steiner cried as he redirected his destination for Hiro. He reached Hiro safely, before the ape had even enough time to withdraw his enormous fist; which he was struggling to shake free. The ape’s fist is stuck in the ground… Steiner noted. I wouldn’t dare call that good luck… he thought to himself, refusing to admit that Domon’s death could have been for his own good. Steiner grabbed Hiro by the collar of his shirt and held him up to his own face level. “Can you run?” Steiner asked. Hiro noticed that tears were pouring out of Steiner’s eyes, but he didn’t look sad. He looked enraged. Still, he was behaving in quite the composed manner. Hiro knew why. He’s fulfilling his boss’ last wish…. He thought to himself. |

FWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET The coach exhausted himself blowing into the whistle and had to inhale deeply to catch his breath. “Let’s see some hustle, men! You think East City is taking a break right now!? Back to work!” Some of the backups groaned, while the starters, including Jet, rose to their feet. Jet took lead of the ranks – it was his job, afterall, as quarterback of the football team. The best players on the team followed, and after them, the stragglers. “I hate running laps!” one younger kid complained. “Why can’t we just play some football?” Jet turned his body around 180 degrees, running backwards whilst keeping the pace. “If you aren’t running laps, and every other team in the state is…who do you think is going to win when we meet head to head on a football field.” Jet turned around and increased his pace, trying to encourage the stragglers to do the same. “Besides, we’ll have plenty of time to run plays…we still have another week of two-a-days.” He smirked. The stragglers voiced their complaints. Jessie tagged Jet on the shoulder. Like Jet, Jessie was one of the best players on the team. He was the captain, in fact. Jessie, of course, had a sizeable advantage in that he’d been held back several times. “Thought you’d never catch up.” “Sorry, had to stop and tie my shoe back there.” They managed to share a chuckle between the two of them, but were careful not to throw their breathing out of rhythm. After running for what seemed like hours, Jessie and Jet stopped and waved to the kids behind them. To some of them, this was freedom. They were signaling that once they reached Jessie and Jet, they had reached the finish line. Some kids breezed through; other, less athletic kids were trying to sell the “shoulder walk,” taking some over a full minute to catch up. “Take a knee,” Jet commanded. The players gladly obeyed. “Boy, sounds like a dog pound out here.” Their coach remarked, referring to the heavy panting of the team. “Don’t worry, we’ll whip ya’s into shape yet. Still got a week until East City. That’s it, fellas, hit the showers.” The huddle broke, and players began walking up the hill at the end of the field towards the school. “Hey, c’mon Jet.” Jessie said. “Hiro’s done class in about a half hour. After we get showered up we won’t need to wait very long to get him.” “Right.” Jet replied. “Good idea…let’s go get something to eat.” |

“N-no..I can’t.” Hiro muttered. “I think…both of my legs are broken.” “Figures.” Steiner draped Hiro over his shoulder. “Alright. I’m sure you’re just about tired of getting carried like this. Don’t worry…we’re almost out of here.” He said as he took off for the entrance through what was now a mostly vacant main hall. When they reached the entrance to the hall they realized that any effort to push their way to the front would be futile. Steiner was unable to navigate through the mess of kids trying to get through the door. What was worse – the ape was on the move again, heading right for the entrance of the school. Steiner stopped struggling, and effectively went limp. “Hiro…I’m sorry. I don’t think I’ll ever get to make everything up to you. You know, all the beatings and everything.” He said. “Hiro, this is all I can give you.” With that, Steiner grabbed Hiro between both of his hands, holding him up over his head. “Hiro, don’t you forget this!” Steiner cried as he stretched his arms far backwards and, in an almost-superhuman feat of strength, launched Hiro fifteen feet clear over the children to the other side of the entrance. Fortunately, very few kids were able to shake themselves free from the pile at a time, so Hiro didn’t need to worry about being immediately trampled. THUDDDD Hiro collided with the ground, face-first. It didn’t seem painful at the moment. What now… He thought to himself. The problem remained that neither of his legs could support any weight in their condition. He was stuck on the ground; face down, waiting to get trampled by either a school full of kids or by a giant human killing gorilla. The gorilla’s footsteps grew nearer and nearer. He was rounding the building to exterminate the students cramped in the entrances. Hiro wanted to just give up, but he knew he couldn’t pretend. His body had been broken but his will was still strong. He still hoped for a savior. He still hoped that his friends would all get back up. |

Someone grasped a thick lock of Hiro’s hair and yanked his head backwards as to expose his face. Hiro, who was close to the point of exhaustion, struggled to lift his eyelids. His vision was cloudy. But that blonde hair…and that football jersey… Hiro thought to himself in disbelief. “You thought I’d leave ya behind, didn’t ya bud?” Jessie smirked as he lifted his younger friend off of the ground, carrying him horizontally in his arms. “But this is no time for games…that thing’s gonna attack again any second. Move!!” Jessie wasn’t ordering Hiro, of course, but Jet, whom Hiro saw was also carrying a smaller companion. Jet obeyed, and the two football stars charged as fast as they could from the school. “He shouldn’t follow us…” Ryu noted. “There’s plenty of easy pickings in the school for that…thing!” He was right, and the ape continued to rampage on school ground, picking handfuls of students up at a time and tossing them far up into the air and squashing groups of kids with his feet. The group escaped through the parking lot and were making their way through the long driveway. They couldn’t see anything but trees in every which direction. The trees along the long driveway served as a barrier to keep the outside world from affecting education. Needless to say…there’s no keeping out a giant ape… Hiro thought. “….So what’s the plan?” Ryu asked, being the first one to acknowledge that they were running in a straight line to nowhere. “We need to get to town! There’s no way they could know about that thing….!” “You’re right….” Jet remarked. “As tall as that thing is, nobody would be able to see it through the woods at the top of this hill…” “Okay, so straight to town then…” Jessie confirmed. “Where to first?” He asked. “My house!” Hiro exclaimed. “I want to see my mom!!” Hiro wiped his eyes with the rounded ends of his fists. Jet and Jessie shared a look. There were important things to do, but it was clear that Hiro was at his wit’s end. They shared a nod and set course for Hiro’s house. They were not prepared for what was awaiting them outside the thick of the trees. |

“There’s no hope for any of us…” They could see the carnage all across the valley from their vantage point. Buildings engulfed in flames and city streets painted red with blood stretched on for as far as the eye could see. The dark clouds of the night sky were much more visible from here. It seemed strangely symbolic to Hiro. The most noticeable thing, however, was the number of giant apes scattered across the landscape. There must have been at least ten or twelve of them causing carnage and destruction. “I wonder if there’s hope even for humanity…there’s just no way we could defeat such massive creatures.” “It won’t be long now.” Ryu remarked. “There won’t even be any survivors by the time we get down there. Our time’s up.” The members of the group all looked off in reflection. It couldn’t end here…it just didn’t make sense. I can’t die yet. Hiro thought. It's not right. I can’t die before I figure out where these idiot apes came from and get them back! “And I’ll kill every single one of them, too!!” Hiro exclaimed aloud. He caught his group members off guard, and at least one of them jumped when Hiro made his sudden outburst. Jessie looked down at Hiro with horror. Not because of anything he said necessarily, but because of the feeling of guilt that washed over him when he thought for a moment of breaking his word to Hiro. It’s a death wish for both of us if I take him into town… He thought to himself. “Alright.” Jessie closed his eyes. “Jet, you take Ryu to East City. If you leave now you can probably get there by dawn.” “….what are you two going to do, then?” Jet inquired, concerned for the safety of his friends. Jessie tucked Hiro in closer to his chest. “I’m going to make good on my word.” He replied. Jet was surprised and his jaw hung down. The silence was not brief. After doing some reflecting of his own, Jet turned to Jessie. “Let’s do this. Y'know, finish it…let’s get out of this place.” I just hope Hiro’s mom can hang on for a little longer…or this is going to be a waste of a trip Ryu said to himself. |

Jet and Jessie were both exhausted. The mad dash to Hiro’s house began to seem more and more like a one-way trip, as the return voyage began to seem less and less feasible. It didn’t shake anyone’s will. Hiro didn’t know how to express himself, but he was grateful to have such loyal friends. Am I being selfish? Hiro wondered to himself. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed that Ryu’s gaze was fixed upon him. He was afraid to look Ryu in the eye knowing that his selfishness could well cause his death. He looked up regardless. What he saw surprised him. Ryu’s face was smeared with dried blood - both that of his own and of others - and smut from the building collapse. The injuries he incurred during the escape were significant. Almost everyone he knew had just been crushed to death. But when Hiro looked to face him, Ryu was already smiling right back at him. ... Hiro’s home was in relatively good condition when they finally arrived. Jessie took Hiro as far as the door to let him down so that he could lean against the wall. Jet let Ryu off his back, too. The football players both propped their bodies up by putting their hands on their knees. They panted heavily. “Why don’t…you go…inside…?” “Yeah…we might not…have much time…” Jessie insisted. Right. Hiro nodded. He opened the door and hobbled inside, putting of much of his body weight as possible onto the wall. The room was mostly shrouded in darkness, though Hiro could see the faint light of moonbeams slipping through some windowpanes. Everything was silent. It crushed Hiro to think that nobody was home after coming all this way, and so he refused to. There was nobody on the first floor, and it wouldn’t make much sense to be on the top floor in a situation like this. They could be in the basement… Hiro thought to himself. Hiro moved to the staircase and began (relatively) quietly descending the first set of stairs. |

“Dr. Jaeger…” “Yes, Dr. Ansem?” “The experiment is becoming very unstable. His heart is pounding, his breathing is becoming very shallow, and he’s sweating profusely because of his spiking fever. He could die, Doctor!” “…Dr. Ansem?” “…Y…yes, Dr. Jaeger?” “Isn’t it true that you share a…rather intimate relationship with the specimen?” “Yes sir, I see how you could think-” “This is not up for debate, Dr. Ansem. We are too close to allow our own feelings about the experiment to change the outcome. This is our role, Doctor. The experiment will proceed. Continue to monitor the specimen’s status and make any adjustments necessary. He’ll live. …and if he doesn’t, it means the experiment was a failure all along – that we’ve wasted the last six years on a prayer that was not answered.” Dr. Ansem was crushed. His shoulders fell to his sides and he turned to the door. “You know…if this works, this boy will be mankind’s greatest weapon.” He spoke over his shoulder to Dr. Jaeger, who was now behind him. He took a step towards the exit. “If it works…” Dr. Jaeger stressed. He sighed heavily. These six long years have taken so much from them – especially from Dr. Ansem. “Sedate him and shut the program down.” Dr. Jaeger ordered. “But just long enough for his body to return to homeostasis. We need the program to run to completion.” Dr. Ansem found himself unable to conceal a smirk, and took one more step towards the door. “Dr. Ansem,” Dr. Jaeger interrupted his exit again. “Have you made any progress on determining whether or not the subject has been able to absorb the isolated gene?” Dr. Ansem froze. The documents were on his desk – it was entirely likely that Dr. Jaeger had already seen the documents, and he was testing Dr. Ansem’s loyalty to the experiment. He had to respond quickly. He said what felt right. “Yes…the subject’s DNA sequencing is adapting as expected to the addition of the isolated gene. If he survives the final phase of the metamorphosis, it will only be a matter of time.” “Excellent…” Dr. Jaeger replied. He seemed satisfied. |

As Hiro descended down the stairs, leaning heavily on the metal railing, he began to notice a dim light coming from the back on the basement – behind the staircase. He reached the bottom of the stairs and turned the corner. Tears flooded from Hiro’s eyes. “Mom!” Hiro cried as he dashed forward to wrap his arms around her, neglecting the injuries to his legs. He only made it a few steps, and he collapsed to the floor. Instead of pain, his face read relief. The trip wasn’t a waste of time, afterall. Aya and Luna rushed to Hiro’s sides and began to tend to his wounds. “My boy…” Aya murmured as a tear rolled down her cheek, striking Hiro’s forehead. The feeling of the droplet on his skin caused him to snap back into action. His eyes whipped open, and he rolled over to push himself off of the floor. “No, mom. We can’t stay here…as long as those apes are here, it’s not safe.” Hiro said as he struggled to rise to his feet under his own strength. “If only your father was here to see how strong his boy is…” Aya said aloud. It was evident that Hiro’s father wasn’t around. He was never around; why would he be home today. Hiro fell to the ground and stopped breathing. Everything flashed brightly at first, and then went black. He couldn’t move. ”am I dead?” He asked himself. “what is this?” “is anybody there?” “it’s dark...I’m scared…” “somebody help, I’m only a kid!!” He began to sob between desperate, panicked breaths; then crying hysterically. Eventually he was silent. He began to think of the reason why he wouldn’t go to heaven when he died. This is hell, then. He concluded. I’m…I’m not a good person? Hiro asked himself as he fell to his knees. Hiro had no way to tell how much time had actually gone by. After what felt like days, another light flashed. This light flash was similar to the previous one…it flashed very brightly, and quickly diminished. Like the flash bulb of an older camera. |

The young earthling hesitated for a second to open his eyes when he felt solid ground beneath his feet. He opened one eye, just a crack; the light was blinding after several days of darkness. Hiro shut his eye again. Damn…it’s so bright….what’s going on!? He wondecrimson anxiously. He tried again, this time putting a hand over his eyes to serve as a visor from the sun. My face…I can feel my face…I can feel again… What’s going on? His vision began to come into focus in a matter of minutes as his eyes adjusted to what was seemingly sunlight. He felt a rough wind run through his hair and could hear the buzzing of flies; the overload of sensory information all at once made Hiro want to crawl out of his skin. Then the light vanished, and Hiro fell to his knees. “No….” He looked to the dirt. “Everything…is back to the way it was…” He said as he choked on his tears. “I thought my suffering was over…” This entire experience had been inccrimsonibly taxing on the thirteen year old. A piece of him hoped that he never return from that place of darkness; at least there, suspended in nothingness, he couldn’t watch any more of his friends die. But when Hiro opened his eyes, his will was broken. Jessie, Jet, and Ryu stood ahead of him…his mother and his sister were also outside now, off to the side. Then Hiro noticed that he had been standing freely this entire time. “What’s going on…” He thought aloud, scanning the area. He could still see all of the buildings crimsonuced to rubble and engulfed in flames, and he could still see the fresh coat of blood painting the city streets. “Everything’s…the same…” He said wide-eyed, in disbelief. “Hiro…are you alright?” Jessie asked. Wait…that was Jet’s voice. He puzzlingly looked back at Jessie. “Hiro…are you alright?” Jessie asked, again. This time in his own voice. Hiro shook it off. “N…No, I’m not alright!” Hiro cried. “Because no matter how hard you try, there’s no way to explain these giant apes!!” “And what’s worse,” he added, “is that we don’t stand a chance at getting out of here.” |

“Hiro don’t say that!” Luna snapped. “Yeah, Hiro…we beat the odds once already when we got outta that school. We can pull it off again, I bet!” Jet reasoned. “This isn’t like the school!!” Hiro screamed. “That was only one of them at the…they’re crawling all over the city!” He cried. Everyone in the group grew silent as they heard a crashing sound nearby. Shit! I attracted one that was nearby… Hiro thought. Ryu honed in on where the sound came from; it was opposite a large building about 20 meters away. It must be behind there. He observed. The group remained silently anxious. Every passing second felt like a lifetime. Several moments went by. There was still no second footstep. Jet, having noticed he was brainstorming, nudged Ryu on the shoulder, and was just about to ask him what he thought happened, when…. SLAMMMMMMMMMM The tall building separating them from the ape was knocked down in one arm swing. The building collapsed directly downwards. The sound of the stone building being crushed was deafening. Through the cloud of falling dust left by the building emerged a giant, furry, brown ape, with small red piercing eyes. And he was walking towards them. The group scattered, but it was no use. They stood no chance at outrunning the enormous beast. Jet grabbed Ryu by the arm, as Jessie did with Hiro, and they quickly relocated behind an immediately available pile of rubble. Luna and Aya ran back inside the house – effectively putting themselves directly between the ape and the friends. “No mom….” Hiro couldnt find the voice to call to his mother as she pulled Luna by the hand back into the house. The ape quickly approached the children, almost walking right by Hiro’s house. But, just as the monster was passing by Hiro’s house, it suddenly stopped. It turned, and raised an arm over its head. “No!! Mom!!” Hiro cried, finding his voice this time. The beast swung his arm down from the side, removing the house from the ground entirely. An exposed Aya and Luna held each other tightly, shaking in fear, in the corner of the basement. |

“Damn!” Jessie exclaimed. He looked down at Hiro; the horror expressed on his face caused Jessie pain of his own. “Obviously we can’t beat him.” Jessie spoke quickly. With every passing second, Hiro came closer to losing his family. “Just like at the school…the only way some of us can escape is if someone distracts the beast.” He continued. Ryu’s eyes widened; “No, Jessie!” He cried. ”Don’t worry, now. I won’t go dying on ya’s yet.” Jessie took a step back and put a hand on both Ryu’s and Hiro’s heads. He turned to Jet. Jet was looking him in the eye. “Get them out of here.” Jessie ordered, and he took off. Hiro squeezed as tightly as he could around Jessie's leg to try and cling to him, but Jessie was easily able to shake free. He covered the distance between the children and the monkey with impressive speed. Jet grabbed both Ryu and Hiro by the wrist and ran off in the direction opposite the house. He basically had to drag both of them, however, as they both looked back with terror. Jessie reached the ape as he was reaching into the exposed basement. Heh, just in time. He thought to himself. “Aya! Brea! Get outta there! Run and hide!” He cried, facing the house. “Hey you big dumb ape! I’m over here! Do ya hear me!? I’m right he-“ Without readjusting his body whatsoever, the ape lifted his leg up and slammed it down directly over Jessie with incredible speed. Blood pooled out from beneath the ape’s foot. He continued to reach into the basement and emerged with a female figure in his hand. Hiro wanted to look away, more than anything. But he couldn’t. His eyes remained glued to his sister as the ape held her in his fist. The beast held her out sideways in front of his body and grabbed the other half of her body with his other hand; snapping her backwards like a twig and letting her body fall to the ground. He reached back into the basement. “No, mom!” Hiro cried. “You can’t have her!!” Tears streamed down his face as the creature picked up his mother the same way, holding each side of her in either of his hands. Her neck and head only were exposed, and Hiro could see her. He was still so close, he could see the green of her eye. She stared back at him. Hiro could never imagine what was going through her head at that moment. Hiro only wished that the ape had given his mother the same treatment as his sister and his best friend. Instead, the sound of her innards flopping against the ground echoed through the air as the ape ripped her body into two pieces. The beast proceeded to throw both halves of her corpse to the ground, and began stomping around in circles, waving his arms in the air, as he celebrated the carnage that he caused. |

Hiro could do nothing but helplessly try to shake free from Jet’s strong grip. “There’s no saving her, Hiro!” Jet exclaimed. “We need to get to the town gate.” He yanked on Hiro’s arm sharply, signaling for him to look up at him. Hiro obeyed and made eye contact. “There’s nothing left for us here.” Jet said sternly. Tears began to well up in the corners of Hiro’s eyes, but he blinked hard to fight them back. He stopped resisting Jet’s help. The trio ran as fast as they could for the gate. Hiro and Ryu couldn’t help but to watch the carnage as they passed by. Apes ripping humans to pieces and crushing all of their bones in a single blow littered the landscape. Hiro swore he even saw some apes dangling humans by the leg over their giant opened mouths, as if they were going to swallow them. The three friends reached a three-way intersection at the end of the street. “Okay guys…the town gate…it’s right down this next street!” He spoke too soon, however, as they turned the corner, and standing right there in front of them was yet another giant ape. He quickly reached down and snatched Jet from the ground. “Go!” Jet reacted quickly, and let go of Hiro and Ryu before the monster could snag all of them at once. Ryu, understanding that they now had a legitimate chance at escape, helped move Hiro along. He wasn’t moving efficiently, but at least they were putting distance between themselves and the ape. Hiro found his eyes glued to those of yet another friend’s as he met his untimely end. The giant beast pinched each of Jet’s arms between his fingers, suspending him in the air. “Hey, you!” Jet spat at the ape. “You’re going to die! You know that? You stupid FUCKING ape!” The expression on the ape’s face was almost blissful as he ripped off each of Jet’s arms. Jet cried as he fell through the air, and became silent on impact. |

Hiro turned away from Jet and faced the exit. Their footsteps and breathing were coordinated as they dashed down the home stretch. Hiro could see the town wall and the opened gate. They still had another mile or so to go, but that distance seemed to pale in comparison to the amount of ground they’d covered up to this point. He thought about everyone who’d died. So many people died to save Hiro. He turned to Ryu. “We had the best friends that anybody could ever ask for…” Hiro said in reflection. Ryu looked at the ground, and looked back at Hiro. “Hey, save your breath. We’re almost out of here, and I think we’re past all of those monkeys…” Ryu insisted. Hiro felt a sense of guilt wash over him. Why should I live? Why do I deserve to escape? BOOM His focus was disrupted by a large explosion only a few hundred feet to his right. He froze, and looked over. “No…not again…” Hiro said under his breath. Ryu tried to pull Hiro’s arm, but he couldn’t get him to budge, and he wasn’t going to leave without him. The two waited with baited breath for the beast to turn from around the corner, or to smash through the building in front of them. Instead, however, a fighter jet screamed as it soared overhead. “Help’s come, Hiro!” Ryu cried. “We just need to get...to the exit!” He explained as he yanked Hiro’s arm. He finally succeeded in moving his friend. They made haste for the town border; as they approached closer to the gate, however, they begin to realize that something was growing on the distance. It was hard to identify…whatever it was, was colored green, and the moonlight, bright as it was, didn’t provide much resolution. The two became closer and closer to the gate. Ryu stopped, grabbing Hiro’s arm. “Hiro…I have a hunch I know what’s out there…” Ryu said, thinking back to the fighter plane that soared by them. “Those are the guys that are going to kill these horrible things!” Ryu and Hiro turned around to judge the distance between them and the apes behind them. Their eyes widened with fear. They immediately ran for a nearby alley to take shelter, but it was too late. The congregation of at least four apes behind them all dropped their jaws in unison and began to form a light blue sphere of energy in the back on their throats. There was some sort of energy discharge, and four great beams of energy fired off, through the town gate, scattering the military ambush forces that were on the other side of the wall. Both Ryu and Hiro managed to find shelter from the attack, but the shockwave blew them both backwards with great force. Hiro awoke to a faint pitter-patter of bullets and explosions. Everything became cloudy, and his hearing was dulled. He didn’t have the strength to keep his neck at a looking angle, and so his head bobbed up and down as he tried to absorb his surroundings. The alley was almost completely destroyed, and Hiro couldn’t move his legs, though they didn’t appear to be damaged. Bullets flew past one direction of the alley, and volleys of magnificent light blue energy flew in the other. The last thing Hiro saw before losing consciousness was the horribly mangled body of Ryu. His back was against the wall, and he was facing Ryu, whose empty, lifeless eyes were aimed just over Hiro’s shoulder. |

Hiro nodded in and out of consciousness as artillery rained hell on the city and shrapnel splintered off in every which direction. Troops scattered throughout the city, surrounding the apes and using strange guns that fired beams of light to corral them. It was difficult for the teenager to judge the passage of time as he was nodding-out, but it must have only taken the troops a couple of hours to eliminate the ape threat. The apes roared with pain as the properly-equipped humans took them down as a team, one by one. The young earthling received a great deal of satisfaction as he heard the cries of the ape-beasts…in a sick and twisted way. He nodded began to nod off again. While resting his eyes, he envisioned himself ripping open the dead ape with his bare heads, grabbing out handfuls of guts at a time, sometimes shoving handfuls of their innards into his own mouth. “Look who’s on the top of the food chain now!” He wished he could cry as he ripped the ape’s guts to bits. When Hiro came to, he saw two shadowy figures running in his direction. A sense of anguish overcame him as he identified them by their apparel – both were wearing bright white lab coats. “Damn…not me,” he tried to speak, but his voice was too weak. He blacked out yet again. When he awoke he was in the back of what appeared to be some sort of scientific ambulance. The two scientists were hovering over him. His worst fears were realized as he saw the two scientists prepping chemicals in syringes and preparing what appeared to be other medical equipment. Whether they were treating him to get information from him or examining his wounds to gather information on the apes, he was already sure that he was about to become a lab rat. No…please… He thought. He wanted to speak, but he felt unable to locate his voice. Please, God…I’ve suffered enough… Don’t make me your science fair experiment… |

Hiro was still nodding in and out of consciousness and he began to fear that he was losing his mind. He was experiencing “time skips” in which extended periods of time would seem to lapse instantly. Objects around the vehicle began to behave strangely – changing color, for example. Objects from within the ambulance would also inexplicably disappear, even if only for a moment or two, and then reappear. The walls, ceiling and floor were all breathing and an incredibly disorienting feeling would talk Hiro over in waves. He could not have explained the discomfort if he tried, but it was as if he had two bodies but could only feel each one slightly. The two scientists were speaking to him face to face as if he could hear them, but Hiro was still entirely shell shocked from the horror he had just experienced. He remained silent, swaying from side to side in his stretcher with the motions of the ambulance. He continued to remain silent as the ambulance reached its destination and the doctors began the process of unloading him into the hospital, which, like the ambulance, appeared to be much more scientific than a regular hospital. Being smart enough for his age, Hiro noted that it would be awfully peculiar for any public health facility to be this high-tech. This had to be a private hospital or laboratory of some kind. The earthling stared into directly into his own eyes as he examined himself using the reflective chrome surfaces all around him as a mirror. Dirt and blood were smeared all over his face – the blood of Domon and Ryu, mostly. An uneven line of tears had washed the blood away in a straight line from the corner of each eye to his jawline. He was badly bruised and beaten, and although his legs had inexplicably recovered with incredible haste, he could still feel an immense amount of pain throughout his entire body, legs and all. |

“Dr. Ansem...” “Yes, Dr. Jaeger?” "How is the test subject? Is he recovering from the reboot?" Dr. Jaeger, the more aggressive scientist of the two, inquired. Dr. Ansem was nervous and couldn’t make eye contact with his colleague while he spoke to him. “It appears he's in the final phase of the simulation. I believe he's actually meeting us for the first time now." Dr. Ansem began. "But, um…” he continued. Dr. Jaeger visibly grew anxious and Dr. Ansem wasn’t especially in favor of angering the short-tempered lead doctor. “Actually, he’s not recovering very well at all…” Dr. Jaeger surprisingly kept his cool, but his tone grew strict. “You told me that we had successfully isolated the gene…” “Right.” Dr. Ansem replied. “And we did. We also tested the subject for the gene, and his body accepted the DNA adaptation. I don’t understand why the subject doesn’t have the incredible healing properties of the Saiyans. Unless…” Dr. Ansem began to pace around the room as he began to make connections in his mind. “Unless we were wrong…unless the Saiyan battle recovery property…is located on a different gene.” That observation triggered figurative light bulbs above both of the scientists heads, and they both drew the same conclusion. If they had not isolated the Saiyan recovery gene, then perhaps they had recovered something even better from their gene donor. Then again, perhaps the experiment was a failure entirely. “What about bloodlust?” Dr. Jaeger asked. “Is he keeping in touch with his humanity?” His counterpart tried to hide a smile, but couldn’t help it. “Absolutely.” Ansem neglected to mention that Hiro imagined himself consuming the insides of one of the Saiyan invaders. He didn’t need to retain his humanity when it came to slaughtering Saiyans…after all, it’s what he was being bred to do. Dr. Ansem walked over to Hiro’s unconscious body, which was afloat in a tank full of blue liquid. His nerves were plugged with wires that extended out past an opening in the top of the tank and connected to a computer, and a breathing mask was snugly attached to his face. He obviously did not have open wounds, but his body was bruised in the same places that it was in the simulation, and so his naked body was pretty black and blue, even in the real world. A side-effect of simulation sickness, the mind literally convinces the body that its been damaged. “We will need to disconnect him soon.” Dr. Ansem noted. “The subjects thoughts and feelings are becoming increasingly hard to read. He’s quite the emotional being. The simulation is failing and the subjects body can’t take much more. I also don't want to give him too much time to think back on the incident. The more time we give him to think, the greater the chance that he'll figure out that he witnessed the horrors from ten years ago through the eyes of his friend, Orphen." “I’ve already contacted the turtle hermit and explained to him how significant this child is for mankind. He agrees that this child needs to be trained properly. We’ll wake him up and send him to Kame house before the week is up.” Jaeger replied. The two breathed a heavy sigh of relief. “I can’t believe…after all this time…” “Yeah, I can’t believe we’re finally going to have a first line of defense against the Saiyans…this truly is the first step towards an independent future….” |
