PRESENT DAY: Everything went black for Hiro. He wasn’t sure if he’d lost consciousness or even died – he halfway hoped for the latter. I give up… Hiro thought to himself. Mom.. Jessie… Ryu… Naomi… Jet… Luna… He listed the names of those he knew that were slaughtered by the ape. He even mourned Domon, Steiner, and Ms. Wormwood. A tiny spec of light seemed to appear in the far off distance. As his eyes adjusted to the light in the room the spec of light became closer and closer; bigger and bigger, until that spec of light illuminated the machine-ridden laboratory all around Hiro. In front of Hiro stood the two familiar doctors – Ansem and Jaeger. In this world, Hiro noted that Dr. Ansem looked seemingly different. In fact, he looked almost exactly like…. “Dad…?” Hiro asked, puzzlingly. Peculiar as it was, the earthling was only now able to identify his father as the ambitious junior scientist. Not because his physical appearance was greatly altered in any way, but instead because while Hiro was plugged into the simulation, certain memories of his needed to be manipulated. After all, they were building a weapon that would be highly capable of protecting them from the Saiyans if raised properly, but could also be expediting their own demise if Hiro were to side with his effective half-brothers-in-arms – the terrible apes. They needed to ensure at all costs that this investment would not turn around on them. “You must have a thousand questions, kiddo….” Dr. Jaeger spoke as Dr. Ansem’s eyes remained fixated on the floor just in front of his feet. Hiro sat and listened as the two scientists explained, in an elaborately constructed lie, the past several days to him – little did Hiro know that he was first plugged into the simulation several years ago. They told Hiro that the Saiyans had attacked and that he was recovered from the shock. Anything else that was peculiar was mostly attributed to trauma…the teenaged earthling had no idea that the attack had really occurred years before, and while his friends truly did die horrifically in the attack, he wasn’t anywhere to be found – because he had already been plugged into a virtual world by his father, whom Hiro would most certainly call a mad scientist if only he knew. |

“…so then you understand, Hiro?” His father asked to make sure Hiro was happy going through with this, as if he had a choice in the matter. “Master Roshi is a really strong guy…strong enough to beat those monkeys even. He’s gunna make your strong and disciplined like him, so that you can take on those monkeys like him!” Hiro thought back to his time in the hospital; staring at his own reflection - blood and tears were smeared across his face; his hair was dripping with sweat from the stress he had just undergone. He then looked up at the so-called “turtle hermit,” whose appearance matched his nickname surprisingly well. He then looked back to his father. The thirteen year old in Hiro resurfaced as anxiety overcame him. Living without one of his parents was always tough – now he would have to live with this old, wrinkly man instead of either of his parents. “I’m friendlier than I look,” Roshi began. “And I can make you strong and disciplined, like your father said. Do you want me to teach you to defend yourself?” Roshi asked, his big round sunglasses aimed downwards and Hiro’s shorter stature. Hiro nodded, proving that while he was not fearless, his disdain for the apes was greater than his own anxiety. Roshi observed this, noting that he would never need to motivate this student himself – Hiro had a heart full of love turned into hate to fuel his growth. “Your first lesson will be a history lesson – do you know who the Saiyans are?” Roshi asked. Ansem cleared his throat. Roshi turned to Ansem. “I’ll give you two a minute.” He said before he turned and hobbled away, leaning on his walking stick. This was the first time that Hiro could actually remember meeting his father, and so it seemed peculiar that he didn’t want to leave his side. Ansem put a hand on Hiro’s shoulder. “I don’t want you to waste a single moment on you.” Ansem abruptly said to his son. Hiro was taken back. “Your mother is dead because you didn’t just die at that school. Because you lured that monkey to her and your friends.” Ansem turned his back to Hiro, who began sobbing terribly after a moment of immense horror. Tears silently streamed down Dr. Ansems face as he walked away, having given his experiment one last nudge in the right direction. He tried, hard, to convince himself that he made the right choice, trading in his own son for a chance at human independence.
