A Melodic Snowfall: The Trial of a God

Gohan was thankful for many things, but at this particular moment, he was most thankful for the insulated uniform that Stron allowed him to keep.

When he'd arrived at KAME House, Roshi asked the Dimensional Traveler just what sort of training he sought. "Well," Gohan had said, "I want to gain a stronger mastery over myself. I am... I am volatile, Master Roshi. My dreams are haunted and my body demands vengeance on threats that aren't present here. And it's only a matter of time before I either run myself into the ground or cause the deaths of innocent civilians."

"Well then," Roshi said softly,"You have come to the wrong Hermit, boy. I can teach you to harness that aggression, but I can't teach you to dampen it. I specialize in the unleashing of inner rage- you want to hone it, trim it down, and gain mastery of it. For that, you'll need to seek... Well. You'll have to speak with Earth's very own God."

Gohan lingered at KAME house for a few days, eating, resting, and studying some of Roshi's non-porn books. But eventually, his nightmares started again; the secluded island had offered him a brief reprieve, but it seemed that the vacation was over. So he copied some of Roshi's maps, packed a few meals, and left.

The flight to mainland took roughly four hours, including one stop on a cruise ship to relieve himself. From there, he caught a taxi and rode to the nearest bus station. There, he took a bus to the nearest town, then continued this pattern of flying and public transit until he reached his loft in North City. By then, a full two days had passed; a full week and a half since the last time he'd seen his loft. As he arrived, he found a note plastered to his door.

Gohan,
You are to, at your leisure, report to the Planetary Guard camp outside of Little North. Due to rioting, the Guard has been stationed in and around this sector of North City to contain the violence. You are to be further briefed upon arrival.

Sincerely, Srg. Stron.

The Half Saiyan slipped the note into his coat pocket, unlocked the door, and shut it behind him. Shockingly, his loft was cleaned thoroughly, and seemed to be fully stocked on food. Apparently either the Planetary Guard or Capsule Corp. had people running maintenance while he was away. "How sweet," Gohan said to no one in particular, "keeping things in shape in exchange for experimenting on me."

He cooked himself a meal of two bacon burgers, a plateful of fries, and a large glass of Cocacola, and ate in silence. When he finished, he hunted down the remote and turned on the news- apparently the rioting was severe, and four people were dead already, including one soldier. It was slowly spreading to other parts of North City, and both local authorities and the military were working to contain the violence as best as possible without using lethal force. Gohan would get down there sooner or later, but for now, he was exhausted from travelling.

The Half Saiyan slept a while, and thankfully, the sleep was dreamless. He showered, used a thin wave of Ki to shave away the stubble that was beginning to sprout on his face (it took longer for hair to grow on him due to his Saiyan blood, and so this was something that only had to happen once every few weeks) and then dressed. He dawned his civilian clothes, rather than the Planetary Guard uniform that Stron had given him, and left.

He stopped first at a local clothing shop- a boutique, with some fancy title in a foreign language that the Half Saiyan didn't bother to catch the name of. He bought a dark gray snow hat and thick, dark brown gloves, then walked for a while. It was early October, and the snow had begun to pile up only a few weeks prior; now it was a wonderland, and to top it off, Halloween decorations were plastered all over the richer parts of the city. There were kids already wearing costumes, running around and pretending to be their favorite Heroes and 'Super Warriors.' One of them was dressed as the famous 'Mr. Satan,' one of the champions in the World Tournament from years passed. Another was dressed like Master Roshi in his youth, shouting 'Kamehameha!' and waving his arms at the boy dressed as Mr. Satan. It was cute, and reminded Gohan of his youth; the last Halloween before the War, he'd been twelve or so years old, and dressed as his favorite comic book hero, the Curse Bearer. The Curse Bearer could cure anyone of any illness, but in turn, he lost one day of his life. He wasn't an amazing hero- he was basically just a Doctor- but the idea of saving people at the cost of your own life fascinated his younger self.

And then, of course, the war started. Gohan's father, Goku, fell ill. All of the 'Z Warriors' from his Universe rallied together and went to battle; Tien died first. Piccolo was severely wounded. After that, they retreated, and the military snapped into action. After suffering heavy casualties, both the Z Warriors and the Military fought together, and they started to win. They captured five of the labs that the Androids were being produced from, but it wasn't enough; two of the Officers of the Android/Cyborg army, #17 and #18, lead attacks that wiped out Yamcha, Krillin, and five military bases. That was within the first month.

The United Human Forces, as the whole of Earth began calling itself, became careful. They attacked only once per week, and did so in small, fast forces. While this minimalized military casualties, it was only doing so much to quell the Android Armies. So, the Z Warriors began training UHF soldiers in the use of Ki; it helped, but only to a small degree. While the UHF did its best to fight, the Androids wiped out all unguarded life; cities, towns, villages, tribes- all humans who weren't hidden or protected died.

By the second year of the war, the warriors that remained- Piccolo, Vegeta, Gohan, a slowly recovering Goku, Master Roshi, and a young Trunks, lead a platoon of Soldiers to Kami's Lookout. There, they trained in relative safety, each taking turns using the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Gohan had never used it himself- Kami said something along the lines of "You are too young, and will have more use of this later in life."

It took roughly three months for the entire Platoon to go through the Hyperbolic Time Chamber twice; it took another month for the Z Warriors, excluding Gohan, to train in it twice. They took Goku in to speed his recovery, and it worked. With the entire platoon and most of the Z Warriors stronger than ever, they returned to the UHF Headquarters...

Only to find it in ruin.

They retreated instead to Capsule Corp.'s hidden labs in the mountains outside of North City, where Gohan lived the last seven years of his life.

When he was fourteen, the Super Platoon and the Z Warriors lead a massive attack against the Android Army, destroying one of their largest bases. When he was fifteen, Vegeta left Gohan and Trunks with a wealth of knowledge about the extinct Saiyan Empire. Vegeta died the following week in a battle against one of the Android Officers, #16. When he was sixteen, Piccolo fused with Kami and helped slay Android Officer #16, avenging Vegeta's death. When he was seventeen, Piccolo-Kami left Gohan and the rest of Humanity with his knowledge of Earth's history, and of the stars. He told them that, if they could find his ship, they could manufacture a way to escape into the stars.

When he was eighteen, they'd found and reverse engineered Kami's ship. They planned to escape with it, but the hidden lab was attacked. Goku was killed in the chaos, along with a large portion of the UHF. The survivors escaped to Capsule Corp.'s main head quarters in West City.

There, one of the scientists had a breakthrough. He used the template of Kami's ship with the theoretical work on time travel, and created a ship that could travel both time and space. With nearly everyone dead, Gohan, Piccolo-Kami, and a young Trunks were the last remaining Super Warriors, aside from the Super Platoon, which was missing most of its members. Instead of attacking, they focused on defending the Headquarters by distracting the Androids.

When Gohan was nineteen, Piccolo-Kami was killed, or simply vanished. Regardless, Gohan never saw the Namekian again.

At twenty, Gohan had taken Trunks's training into his own hands, and was desperately trying to prepare the boy to defend Humanity to the last.

During a skirmish with a handful of Cyborgs, Gohan lost his arm.

At twenty one, Gohan was shocked by a Cyborg that looked exactly like his father... Because it was his father.

That was when the final attack happened.

Trunks's head was thrown into Gohan's hands.

The Half Saiyan escaped. He was the last survivor of his Earth.

Gohan blinked away tears and shook his head, realizing that he'd wandered into a poorer district. In the distance, he could hear gun shots; someone with an air of authority was shouting orders. He made his way to the source of the noise, and discovered that he'd managed to walk all the way to the Planetary Guard's camp. The Half Saiyan pulled up his collar so that it hid his lower face from view, then walked quietly onto the scene. If he was lucky, this wouldn't take much more than a show of power to quell the rioters.

Gohan stood a good distance away from the action, his snow hat pulled down and his collar pulled up to obscure his face as best as possible. His hands were deep inside his coat pockets, his head downcast but his eyes looking up, taking in the action. He leaned against a building casually, lowering his power level enough to avoid drawing attention.

Three lines of Soldiers encircled a massive crowd of people; the rooftops were lined with officers, SWAT teams, and Planetary Guard members. He had no doubt that at least one of them saw him, but they were too preoccupied to deduce his identity. And so they discarded him as little more than a civilian, drawn by the noise.

One of the rioters screamed, and in turn, they all screamed, surging against the lines of soldiers. They began throwing things- bricks, bottles, eggs, rotten vegetables and fruit, car keys- anything that was on hand came flying outward, smacking into militia, buildings, cars, and everything else that happened to be in the line of fire. A bottle smashed a few feet away from Gohan, and at first he didn't react- until he noticed the small dancing flame that erupted into an explosion of fire. A Molotov cocktail.

The Half Saiyan reacted on instinct, pulling his hands free of his pockets and unleashing two waves of energy to quell the flame. This action was enough to stop the rioters and the militia alike.

An authoritative voice shouted something, and the air seemed to grow thicker, and the snow began to fall again, heavier than before. The soldiers stepped forward; Gohan saw something glistening on the ends of one of their guns... And then the streets were filling with blood. The screaming was louder than before, and more objects were being thrown. The crowd surged against the soldiers, trying desperately to get free, to escape- but it was too late for that.

Gohan would not be a part of this. He would not be part of the slaughter. He'd speak to Stron later, try to determine just what the hell had happened here.

The Half Saiyan slipped back the way he'd come, then took off flying. He had the map to Kami's Lookout in his back pocket; he'd go and meet the so-called God of Earth, and, with luck, begin training under him. He did his best to put the slaughter out of his mind; it was too much like the early days of the War with the Androids.

He could worry about it later, when he had the power to stop it.

"...An Anomaly approaches."

Kami stood silently on the edge of his lookout, His eyes closed and his body tensed. He clutched His staff tight, and let his mind expand. This was a technique he'd mastered many, many years ago. He was, to his knowledge, one of few in the Universe to have even the slightest grasp of it; the other was named Guru. The technique, which in the Old Days allowed one to claim Guardianship of a planet, was Omniscience. It would stay with Kami and Kami alone, until his end was in sight; and then he would pass it on to Mr. Popo, or whomever he deemed worthy at the time.

He'd been largely silent during this... War. He'd remained silent when the planet Earth was taken over by the Saiyans. He imagined, on Namek, Guru did the same. Their lives were safe, for the Dragonballs made their planets valuable. An ambassador from the so-called Avalon Protectorate was sent to inform Kami of the sudden change in government; the God cared not. His life was secure, and until such a time that the Earth itself was in danger of total destruction, he would not act. The inhabitants mattered little, although Humans were pleasantly predictable, compared to... Saiyans.

And, speaking of Saiyans, there was one ascending the tower below. Or, there was half of one; Kami had trained many warriors of many species, Half Saiyans included. But this one in particular- there was something to his aura. 'Something not of this Universe,' Kami thought. He'd heard a tear in reality some weeks prior, but assumed it was someone returning from the Afterlife. Perhaps that wasn't the case; he'd her whispers that the Earthlings had devised a method of transgressing Time. Perhaps this Half Saiyan was of another time... Another reality.

The God gestured for his servant and disciple, Mr. Popo, to come to him. The genie did likewise, bowing respectfully before moving in beside the ancient Namekian.

"M'lord," spoke the Genie.

Kami bowed his head, his brows drawn together in thought. "Fetch tea, Mr. Popo, and prepare a room. We are receiving a guest very soon."

"Of course, M'lord. Might I ask who?"

"A Saiyan. From what I can sense, he is of a good heart. I want only to ask why he seeks training- for that is surely what he seeks. I may yet have tasks for him to carry out... Maybe even a brief quest. But we must greet this boy with proper accommodations. I am viewed as a God, and I will treat my guests likewise." The Genie bowed again and went to carry out his orders. Kami bowed his head, letting his mind expand once more, taking in the events of the world as a whole.
