-Chapter 0- Resignation David had just taken his forty seventh call regarding a recent recall on Capsule corps's latest blunder when he heard the explosions. All too often lately some super powered alien, or freaky robot had been terrorizing the countryside. Even with all the 'heroes' one saw on the news dealing with the problem, and the support given by the rest of the Avalonian Protectorate the situation was bleak. Earth was a squishy little marshmallow, and it's people were playthings to the stronger races. As the power in the call center flickered, and computers shut down the entire facility could be found huddled under their desks. Well nearly the entire facility as David scarcely blinked an eye at the earth shaking booms that grew ever closer. He had over the past year or so grown quite tired of running, hiding, and barely managing to escape the ravages of otherworldly, and unnatural fiends. Electing to simply draw a pack of Newport menthol one hundreds from his right pocket, a lighter from his left, and spark up right there in the middle of the call floor. As the jaded twenty two year old inhaled the mentholated smoke, and blew a thick cloud of it out he heard the familiar squeak of his manager's voice over the din. “Mr. West you will put that thing out this instant, and get under a desk. Our insurance wont cover any accidents caused by your stupidity, or illnesses caused by that foul smoke!” the portly Latina woman urged pointing to the empty space beneath David's cubicle. A look of pure terror filled her eyes, and tears flowed freely despite her sharp reprimand of her less than compliant employee's behavior. David looked at the frightened woman and grinned briefly. He knew that she was serious about his smoking as she had been the lone crusader to petition the company to remove all smoking areas from the premises claiming that they were 'dirty, and ripe with disease'. Taking another long drag the youth contemplated carefully the next words to come out of his mouth. Truth be told for weeks he had been waiting for a situation like this. The perfect opportunity to announce his departure from the company. “Deb, does our cut-rate insurance even cover alien terrorists? I think in the present situation” he said coolly before blowing a thick cloud of smoke in the woman's face “my smoking is the least of our problems. That being said I won't cower any longer. If I'm going to die I might as well do it standing, and facing my attacker rather than buried alive with a name tagged cubicle over my head to identify my corpse”. David's eyes flashed with fury as he peered outside the closest window to see a building beside theirs blasted with some sort of crimson light before dust, and debris exploded from it. Screams echoed all over the call center as the frightened occupants anticipated their own demise. David pulled the pack of cigarettes out once more, and offered one to his manager silently. The shivering woman pushed her curly black hair to one side and without a word reached out for the green package. She drew one of the white cylinders from it and produced a lighter from within her cleavage to ignite it. A weak smile crossed her face as she took her first drag. Finally with David's program she attempted to calm herself a bit. “Thanks David, I appreciate it” she said with a strained voice. The anti-tobacco queen would never live this down. If she lived at all. Just then the pair noticed a figure floating by the window. A violet skinned reptilian humanoid with fangs barred peered inside looking right at them. His solid black pupil lacking eyes made David's skin crawl as they passed his gaze. The creature was wearing armor much like the planet trade organization grunts had been seen wearing during the galactic war, and if Mr. West didn't know that there was currently a ceasefire between the PTO and the Protectorate he would have sworn this terrorist was one of their troopers attempting to claim what would never be theirs. Soon enough however David relaxed as the creature passed by the window leaving them unscathed. Miracles never ceased it seemed. Allowing himself a moment to relax David retrieved his Newports from Deb, and returned them to his pocket before refocusing his attention on her. The tears streaming down her face had doubled in speed as audible sobs could now be heard. “Don't mention it. I guess I don't have to tell you I'm quitting today. Consider this my two-weeks notice submitted per usual two weeks late. I think there is much more I can do to solve these problems than just sit here and hide” David spoke calm and composed as if he had rehearsed this in the mirror for quite some time. That composure broke however as he shouted across the room.”You all should be ashamed of yourselves! Calling yourselves humans, or members of the protectorate, and showing such cowardice. How would these freaks gain a foothold here if we didn't let them? The universe thinks we are weak little sheep to be slaughtered on a whim! Why can't we rise up and show them different. Show them the fighting spirit and fury of earth!” David roared scanning the room for supporters. The speech had been much more impressive the thousand times he had repeated it to himself it seemed as no one stood up to join him. Seeing this he held one arm aloft, and concentrated hard. Azure particles of light emanated from his fingertips, and gathered into a sphere above his head. Several gasps could be heard as David growled pumping more and more energy into the sphere. He had read up on ki manipulation, and had been practicing this basic technique for a while even having use it to get away from one of the steel legion's weaker droids during the war. “See these powers are within us all. I'm an out of shape smoker who plays Call of Duty on his off time, and not some life long martial artist. With practice, and patience we could all learn to defend ourselves against those who would take this planet from us. Are you all not tired of being afraid? Tired of having to rebuild constantly? Stand with me!” David was sweating from his effort to maintain the flow of ki into the sphere. As his power rose he was certain that whatever creature was blasting the city would notice him soon. Rather than wait to be found David pointed his hand towards the window as a flying figure passed it. Taking careful aim he pushed with all his might against the orb of ki sending it hurtling towards the terrorist. The purple skinned humanoid thug was not expecting the attack as the brilliant blue orb blasted through the thick glass pane, and into his back. With a deafening shriek he lost control of his flying and plummeted towards the concrete below. Then as if he was suicidal David threw himself from the window and planted himself on the creature's back. Seeing the ground coming closer every second he was not so sure this had been a good idea. Mere inches from the ground the terrorist managed to regain control and but the brakes on leaving David, and himself hovering above the sidewalk. With a swift twist of his hips the brute launched the human from his back, and straight into the ground. A fine cloud of concrete dust flew into the air, and a distinct crack could be heard as the Alien planted his right foot between David's legs, and his left solidly on the youth's femur. Never before had Mr. West felt such pain as he looked up to see a jagged shaft of bone protruding through the skin with blood pooling up around it. He wailed in agony as the brute began stomping on his ribs shattering each one bottom to top, left to right with sickening precision. At that moment David wondered why he had picked now to become a hero. Why he had not taken the time to take a Karate class first, or lift some weights rather than fling his 'skinny fat' stoner body out of a tall office building to get into a fight with what was obviously a trained soldier was suddenly a mystery to him. Even after his speech on how humans should stand up and protect the planet they called home he could not deny the futility in his actions. After running out of ribs to crush into powder the Alien pressed a few buttons on a device he wore on his face that David knew to be a scouter. Unknown Symbols flashed across the eyepiece as the creature began to grin. The Alien then lifted David up by his collar putting their faces so close together that he could smell the Alien's foul breath. David began to cough in a manner that was a bit too fabricated, and placed his hand over his nose. “Get a tic-tac bro. Your breath smells like rotten ass.” Voice shaking, and body still in agony David had to make a smart ass comment. He knew it would probably get him killed, but if he was going to die anyway what was the point of denying himself a little fun first. The fun however was short lived as the Alien released his collar only to take a firm hold on his throat. The powerful fingers of the reptilian monster were squeezing his windpipe just short of collapsing. This thing had experience in brutally torturing humans, and knew just where to draw the line in order to keep them alive for questioning. “Enough games human. Tell me who fired that shot at me. There was no way your pathetic body could have produced a bolt of energy like that. Tell me who did it, and I might let you live.” The alien hissed making sure to spray David's face with his putrid smelling saliva. The insult was not lost on the young man who was even now trying to wipe it from his skin. “I shot you, and if I had the strength I would make you swallow another blast you freak. What the hell are you doing to my city? What have my people done to you?” David spat returning all the venom he received. Though he would not let his spirit break in front of his enemy he knew that he would not be conscious for much longer. The blood loss had been so great that even now his vision was beginning to go blurry. All he could hope for was for someone to intervene and allow him to die without too much more pain. “There is no way you could have knocked me down boy! Your power level is not even registering above a pathetic rating of one hundred. Who are you hiding from me?” The creature roared slamming a mighty left fist into David's stomach. All the force of a speeding truck concentrated into the area of a fist did it's damage well. The impact made David's knees draw up to guard his stomach, and forced a torrent of bile and blood up through his esophagus. The next thing he knew he was vomiting dark red all over the creature's shiny breastplate. “I'm not hiding anyone. Use that stupid scouter of yours and see. I am the only one in this city who can muster a power like that. Sure I'm not all that strong, but I have something you will never understand. Will, and purpose. You freak aliens, and those goddamned robots ruin everything! You kill innocent people, and strip them of the ability to resist. You poison an otherwise peaceful world! I won't let that happen any more! If the last thing I do with my life is stand up to you monsters then so be it. I'd rather die than cower at your feet for one moment longer” David managed to yell before exhausting the last of his stamina and losing consciousness. The creature was shocked. The human had stones to speak to him in such a way. Before he could truly appreciate this fact however his scouter flashed to life, and began to track a power level approaching from the rear. It noted that the power was currently in the mid five thousands, and climbing rapidly. A shudder of fear crept down his spine as he realized the truth of what was about to happen. One of the Paladins stationed on earth must be on their way. WC 901 TWC 2116 |

-Chapter I- When a hero needs saving Humans by their nature are extremely fragile, and what other species may consider a modest amount of force they shriek with pain over. Their bones are brittle, and their minds are easily broken. The one virtue the human race possesses greater than nearly any other is their sheer determination to accomplish whatever goal they set their minds to. This one mindedness is the foundation on which all human achievement is based, and along with that the only reason that the hero known as David West is still alive. Given the state that the Alien terrorist had beaten him to it was a miracle that the twenty two year old customer service representative had survived minutes let alone hours, but having the good fortune to be dropped as the Alien's attention was focused elsewhere David was given a good shot at living. Providing he didn't bleed out before help arrived of course. At the time he was dropped his unconsciousness was teetering on the edge of failing. His breath was shallow, and his heart rate slowed. Before long he slipped into a deep sleep. No sooner did he fall away from reality did David awake in a world he did not know. Miles of white stone extending straight before him bore hundreds of thousands of what appeared to be concentrated balls of luminescent smoke hovering in a line. The line was constantly moving, and in the several seconds the youth took to process his surroundings more of the wisps materialized behind him. It was not long before the truth of his environs was revealed to David. He was dead, and this was the queue to judgment. Peering above him David noticed first the odd color of the sky. Pink, and violet with an orange tinted horizon the vast expanse of the heavens of heaven was filled with dense cumulonimbus clouds that looked as if they could support the weight of several adult men. Demons of all kinds scurried past the lines, and drove about in flying cars darting to and fro. Seeing the various colors and styles of horns the creatures sported drew David's eyes in every direction. A thunderous shout of “NEXT!” snapped the young human back into focus as he realized that much more time had passed than he thought. Now he was the first person in line to enter a large marble columned building that resembled something one might see in a painting of Greek architecture. Doors easily four times Davids height made from what looked to be well decorated cherry, and ordained with brass knockers that resembled grotesque demonic faces. To the right of the left hand door stood a demon in thick lens bearing horn rim glasses, and a neat gray suit. Upon his head sat a matching fedora that mostly concealed the horns that barley protruded a half inch from it's top. The demon standing beside the door looked impatient, and snapped at David to “Move it along!” as he stopped to admire the building. The demon scowled as he pushed the door open and nudged David inside. Inside was nearly empty except for a desk, which behind sat the largest humanoid David had ever seen. Nearly the size of most buildings this enormous demon had bright red skin, and fierce looking horns. His thick beard and stressed expression gave off the illusion of permanent anger. When it dawned on the youth who exactly he was facing the urge to run away was never greater: King Yemma the god of judgment on whose whim a person was sent on to the mid lands, exalted to heaven, or damned to an eternity in hell. “State your name, and planet of origin” The giant said in a booming voice. “My name is David West, from earth. I'm dead aren't I?” David asked with his eyes wide. He hoped that he was wrong. Everything within him fought against the words he knew were coming. The inevitable damnation that awaited him. The demon king shuffles through his papers for a few moments and produced a thin manilla file on David West with a bright red 'EARTH' stamped on it's front. He riffled through the folder for a few moments before arching an eyebrow at what he was reading obviously confused. “Are you the same David West who threw himself out of a fourth story window with no hopes of landing safely to attack a Planet trade organization brute easily twenty times stronger than his strongest state while resting?” The deity inquired whilst scratching his head. It sounded to David like he hadn't heard something like this of a human in quite a long time. “Sounds about right, though you are missing the finer points of our dialogue” David quipped instantly. The humor did wonders for his fear as each laugh came out a bit of relief started to wash over him. “Now the question is, is that a good thing, or a bad thing?” “well lets see, you were selfless in action if stupid in execution. Your only thoughts at the time were of saving your species from all of the threats they face of late. I'd say that you would be going to to move onward to heaven if I had the intention of sending you anywhere. Your body is still alive down there, if badly damaged. The only reason you are here is that it looked like you may die, and I like to get started on the paperwork as early as possible.” David's faced cracked wide with a smile. Alive! He was not dead, and this all might as well be a dream. He had nothing to worry about if help arrived in time to keep him from bleeding out. Still worried about the situation he looked dead at King Yemma and asked a bold question. Normally he wouldn't have dared to ask it of anyone else, but he figured if he was going to question his decisions with anyone it might as well be the god of judgment. “If I live sir, should I continue on the road I started down today? Should I spend my life trying to protect the peoples of earth?” “Would you really listen to me if I told you not to? You have big brass ones kid I'll give you that. Jumping out of a window, and you don't even know how to fly.” The elder demon said scratching his massive beard. David was positively confused. As much as he had studied how to perform the most basic energy wave technique he had not once considered learning how to fly himself using ki. What a boon that would have been in the fight with that alien brute. Still there was nothing for it. Without a master of ki manipulation to show him the way he was lost. Stuck with his albeit impressive, but limited repertoire of beams, and blasts. “No I wouldn't listen sir. Protecting other humans from the wicked and destructive ways of aliens and androids is the most important thing I can do at this point. Where on earth could I learn to do that sort of thing, and how do I go about seeking training?” David blurted our allowing his thoughts to be heard aloud. The massive demon looked hard in thought for a few moments as if trying to recall every person on earth that had that particular ability. After a few moments he let out a sigh, and began to answer the human's question. “There are two such people on your planet that could help you get stronger. Not only learning how to fly, or harness more potent levels of power, but how to focus those powers for the greater good. One lives at the very top of a white tower in the land of Korin, and goes by the name of Kami. He isn't a human per say, but I believe your people get on alright with your neighbors the Namekians right? Your second option....well if you absolutely had to receive training from a human you could always find that old turtle of a man Roshi to give you lessons. Mind you he is a bit strange at the best of times, and a perverted old fool at his worst. Still he is one of the more knowledgeable folks on earth in martial arts, and by virtue of that Ki mastery. He runs the Kame Senin school of martial arts, and only takes one or two students on a year. He might consider you however if you come recommended by one of his old friends.” King Yemma then tapped a few times upon the crystal ball upon his desk. He put his mouth but a few inches away from it and shouted. “Baba, you old hag come see me I have need of your services”. The crystalline orb glowed violet for a minute, and then from out of no where an aged diminutive human woman dressed in black robes, and a cliche pointed hat appeared on Yemma's desk with a faint 'POP!' David had never seen such a thing and flinched a bit as the woman materialized but kept his gaze focused on the pair before him. “Yes King Yemma, you summoned me? What can I do for you I was just finishing up a bit of tea before I head off to that old goat Roshi's place for the evening. To be quite honest I told him I would be there soon, and I wouldn't want to disappoint him.” The midget of a witch grumbled as if insulted by Yemma's summons. David had not thought about how time might be different in heaven than it was on earth. Perhaps it had been several hours or days since he slipped into the next dimension and it was an unreasonable hour to contact someone. “What a coincidence it is Roshi that I want you to go see. You see that boy over there” Yemma said pointing a gargantuan finger in David's direction. “He is not quite alive, or dead at this point, but should he recover he is looking to get some training so that he may help protect earth. I feel that this is a worthwhile endeavor considering how many cases I've had since that damned galactic war from earth alone. Humans should be more interested in their own defense. I will be sending you back down to earth with a document bearing my seal. Roshi will know to train the boy up if he sees him” “So long as I don't have to try to convince him of anything myself I will be more than happy to deliver your message my lord. Now hurry up with the note so I can get there in time for supper. We're having a barbeque tonight and I wouldn't miss Roshi's grilled chicken for the world” Baba said impatiently tapping her pointed shoe loudly upon Yemma's desk. “Hold your horses, I won't keep you much longer. David this is Baba by the way. Should you ever wish to speak to me, and not go through all the trouble of being beaten half to death she can relay the message. She is a proud old bird that demands respect from younger folk so do treat her right, and she will be a powerful ally. Now Baba here is the note” Yemma stated passing the woman a scroll sealed with his personal crest. “ and you should be off. Save me a plate of that chicken if there is any extra. One doesn't get much good food here in the office.” Without saying a word the Witch snatched up the scroll, and popped once more out of the room leaving only David, and King Yemma to look at one another. Yemma began to shuffle his papers around once again apparently looking for something important. “Sir, I was wondering if I would have any chance of speaking to my mother Lucinda West. I believe she has already crossed over to this dimension, and the way she passed on earth I never was able to say goodbye” David inquired with the beginnings of a tear forming in his eye. The look of sorrow on the young man's face was almost too much even for the god of judgment to handle. Hating the news he would have to give the boy he turned his head slightly to the left avoiding his gaze. “Unlike you your mother's body was not strong enough to withstand death. Remember the wisp like creatures you fell in line with that didn't speak in any language you could hear? Those are souls, and they cannot communicate effectively with the living. Even if I could get the two of you in the same room I am doubtful that she would even remember enough about her human life at this point to recognize you. To put it bluntly you are a special case because you are so strong of body, and will for a human. Most never reach even the modest level you claim now. Understanding this you should not dwell on the notion of being reunited with your loved ones. The only one that you have a chance of seeing is your brother, and he is under close guard in Hell for the acts he committed during the war” David was not surprised to hear of his brother's damnation. Unlike many humans who had been forcefully converted to the Steel legion Davids brother Alfred had volunteered for assimilation. As such he had been able to retain most of his personality, and thus converted began to revel in the slaughter of other humans. This was a terrible crime in any system of belief, and for the perversion he allowed to occur within his body and mind he deserved any punishment the guards of hell could prescribe. Back on earth Kaya was having a rough day. Seventeen separate violent extra-terrestrial incidents in her sector alone in the past week was starting to make job stability as a paladin a thing of the past. She had been dispatched to earth as a first assignment, sort of a training mission. She never expected such a laid back planet in the eyes of the rest of the universe to have so much chaos upon it. Then again it was the birthplace of the steel legion. Having just received word of another attack on a peaceful city Kaya set out on blue wings of ki to settle the matter once and for all. Since her first days training on Avalon to don the sacred mantle of the Protectorate senate's greatest guardian's the blue haired female was a force to be feared amongst her peers. In combat training the young paladin had always been top of the class, and the worse part (for her classmates) is that she had a mind as sharp as any blessed blade she had ever been handed. The complete package Kaya was always told she was destined for greatness. Now instead of fulfilling that destiny out on Mortoseth or some PTO riddled planet that needed their aide the majority of Paladins were flocking to Earth, and Namek in order to guard their allies whom had taken heavy losses during the war. Still under partial control by the Saiyan empire Earth needed to be watched even more carefully than ever before. The lack of internal security was due largely in part to the Saiyan government not allowing the Protectorate to take a greater role in it's protection. With this in mind all of the Paladin's currently on world were to be classified as undercover, and assume roles fitting their position. Kaya had used her time on this third class underpowered world to train with one of it's foremost leaders in the areas of martial arts, and ki manipulation; Master Roshi. Mountains, forests, and open fields zoomed by as the Young Avalonian woman pushed herself to fly faster. The distress call that had alerted her noted that there were three otherworldly beings attacking at this moment all with power ratings in the mid seven thousands. This amount pathetic by Avalonian standards was well above what even the current pinnacle of on world human strength could muster combined. To be certain there were a few amongst the human race that could contend with these terrorists, but at the present time they were off the planet. Even with her target's being so underpowered the Paladin knew better than to underestimate her quarries. The rouges were likely not alone knowing the planet trade organization, and given the paranoid tenancies of their changeling masters they would have a backup plan in case they were caught by enemy law enforcement. Kaya wanted nothing to do with those cold blooded reptilian freaks. The changelings struck fear into the hearts of anyone who had ever been on the wrong side of their fearsome transformations or the vicious techniques they employed so effectively in battle. ”Damn if only I had allowed Master Jodan to send some backup here to join me. If all three of these freaks were to jump me, or if they are suppressing their strength to bait me in I am done for. Wait what is that? Something more powerful than a normal human but fading, and fast.” Kaya noticed the closer to the action she came a faint and falling power level. The energy was not of the same sharp and martial type that she was used to sensing at times like this, but instead a gentler more raw power that lacked refinement. Perhaps the brutes were training some new recruit or maybe they were killing one of the very few natural ki users on this planet. With that thought in mind the Paladin pushed even harder to rocket towards the scene of the PTO attack. Not knowing just what to expect her skin crawled as she touched down. The fearsome trio of power levels had made short work of what had obviously been a hive of human activity. This business district was nearly leveled at this point with huge mounds that once were broken down buildings now lying crumbled where the street used to be. Instead of making a scene the well trained warrior began to draw all of her resting energy deep within her. Every bit of latent power was covered up, and suppressed by her bodies natural electrical signals. A rustling noise came from Kaya's left, and she turned to meet whatever might be sneaking up on her but instead of locking her eyes on a monster she noticed the battered form of David West. Not knowing exactly what she was seeing at first the Avalonian's right hands instinctively darted to the handle of a gleaming and gilded bastard sword hung at her waist. Focusing her full concentration on him she realized two important facts; One that this had been the smaller power level she had felt as flying, and two that he despite all appearances was clinging to life as hard as he could. Instantly She released the hilt of her blade, and rushed over to the injured boy. As she reached a step of his broken form she knelt down beside him, and began rubbing her hands together as if cold. Soon enough particles of cerulean light began to flow freely from her fingertips, and she tore off what little remained of the rags that once were David's shirt. Placing both hands flat upon David's pectorals Kaya pushed out a surge of Azure light that upon coming in contact with David made his entire body jump as if a defibrillator charge had burst forth from them. His eyes opened wide, and twitched as the Avalonian's energy coursed though him. Wounds all over the human's body began to knit together, and broken bones fused with a mirror of the sickening “POP!” that had caused them. After several minutes even the faintest traces of scratches had mended. WC 1019 TWC 5449 |

A rustling noise emanating behind one of the rubble piles alerted Kaya to the presence of another creature. Turning her attention away from the still unconscious human, the Paladin stood back up to survey the area. At first she saw nothing, and was inclined to turn back to David when the faintest speck of leathery purple skin appeared from behind a mass of crumbled steel, and shattered concrete. Kaya focused her mind on that spot sensing the presence of an evil force, and realized exactly what she was dealing with: A Planet Trade Organization brute. "It's okay, you can come out. If you submit quietly no harm will befall you. On my honor as a Paladin of Ganr you will receive only justice this day!" Kaya called out to the hiding terrorist. She was sure that he would not come quietly but it was her duty to offer the savage a chance at redemption. The problem with that choice in her mind however was that it only afforded the criminals a chance to regroup. They never surrendered. Not once. "I think," The alien said as he began to float above the wreckage he had caused "that you need to leave little girl. My employer will be here any moment to survey the site of his new outpost here on Earth. If I were a paladin I would not want to be anywhere near here when Lord Glacial arrives. Still if you insist on arresting me I will be forced to put up a fight. Them Changelings don't pay don't pay if ye go and get arrested do they?". Lord Glacial was known to many Paladins for his rash attempts at taking over planets. The Changeling fiend's tactic of choice was to wipe out entire cities in a day, and replace the local governments overnight. Waves of fast breeding Saibamen were able to clear the remaining occupants within the next week. Kaya knew that if this city had been chosen to host his first outpost that there must be a hundred more brutes just like this one already searching for prime targets. With this realization Kaya knew there was no letting the PTO scumbag out of her sight. Glacial was known for 'pulling the plug' as soon as he was discovered on a world, and blowing it to pieces. Kaya could not let her enemy escape and in the process sign the death warrant for every person on the planet. Taking a deep breath the Avalonian griped the hilt of her beautifully gilded longsword firmly, and in a flash of radiant blue wings coupled with steel the creature that had been floating before her now lay motionless on the ground with his head a few hundred yards away. "you should have surrendered pal, and I'm sure the rest of your monologue was interesting. I unfortunately have the senate to warn" Kaya grumbled as she wiped the sticky green blood that had coated her blade onto the deceased terrorist's uniform. She turned her gaze over to the young man that she had stabilized moments before. Still unconscious the paladin could not be sure he would live if left to lay on the ground. Needing to hurry back to her apartment as quickly as possible the only solution for it would be for her to take him along. Half way though the flight home with his weight on her shoulder Kaya began to regret the entire notion of selflessness. WC 576 WC 6025 |
