”No, no, NO! Master Roshi snapped as he brought the large rounded end of his walking stick down upon the top of Hiro’s head. Hiro went cross-eyed and his limbs jolted outwards reflexively. Having lost his footing, the young earthling fell flat on his butt. He took a moment to gather himself before sniffling and wiping his nose on his sleeve; he looked up at his Master sheepishly.

“How many times have I got to tell you, if you’re not going to do it right, don’t do it at all!”

Hiro looked around puzzlingly before refocusing on the Turtle Hermit. Truthfully, Hiro didn’t know what shoe shining had to do with self defense, but then again he was pretty sure Roshi hadn’t taught him anything about self defense to date.

The young earthling was distracted by the calls of seagulls flying overhead. He spent so much time doing chores for Roshi that he never really had the time to enjoy the simple pleasures that Kame House had to offer. It was a beautiful day out - the ocean was blue as far as the eye could see and the sun gently kissed your skin; there was hardly a cloud in the sky. Master Roshi sure seemed like he was enjoying the gentle crashing of the waves and the calming winds while he rested in his reclining beach chair. It really would make sense for him to be wearing sandals or flip-flops instead of shoes on the beach. Hiro thought to himself. I guess that would mean he’d have to think of something else for me to do, though… He joked to himself.

Roshi looked back down at Hiro, who had already shined the shoes to perfection. Well I guess I am just bullying the kid at this point… He thought before jumping up out of his seat. His old bones were surprisingly agile – though not incredibly impressive, as Roshi winced over in pain for a moment after overdoing himself without stretching.

”Okay Hiro, I think that’s enough shoe-shining for one day, even if you did do a half-assed job…” Roshi said. He couldn’t give the kid too much credit this early in his training.

”Go ahead and get some rest. Tomorrow I’m going to take you to the mainland; we have some errands to run.” Hiro looked like he was about to start celebrating before Roshi interrupted him. ”Don’t get ahead of yourself! We won’t be doing anything fun and it’ll be boring and you’ll be stuck with an old man doing chores all day heh heh!” Roshi burst out in laughter as proceeded to retreat into Kame House.

Hiro’s puzzled expression revealed his feelings as he watched Roshi walk away, still on his knees from shining shoes. He waited until after Roshi shut the door to speak.

“….what?” Hiro was left wondering in confusion.

Roshi leaned out the window. ”You say somethin’? Heh heh!” Roshi continued to clutch his ribs in laughter.

”N…no it was nothing master!” Hiro replied as he nervously hurried after his Master into Kame House.

Hiro felt a bolt of sheer terror shoot upwards through his spine as he lost his grip when a rock protruding from the mountainside crumbled to pieces in his hand. He held his breath as he looked down, watching the clay-colored rocks plummet to the Earth far below. The young earthling took a moment to regain his composure as he dangled from one arm off of the side of the mountain. “I thought you said we were going to run some errands today…” Hiro muttered begrudgingly.

He almost lost his grip when he felt a familiar wooden walking stick bonk him on the back of the head. ”I wouldn’t have brought you all the way out here if I wanted to hear you complain!” Roshi began. Hiro had been so focused on overcoming the obstacle that he had forgotten he was carrying the old man on his back. ”You could have done plenty of that at Kame House!”

It was a shame that once again Roshi had detracted from Hiro’s ability to enjoy the beautiful landscape around him. Woah… He thought to himself as he just now realized the sun was setting. The red-orange tint of the setting desert sun was something that he’d never seen before. He turned to face directly up the mountain.

The human youth recklessly pulled down on the rock he was hanging from, launching himself several feet upwards. He quickly swung his free hand around, grasping another protruded rock from the mountainside for dear life. He let out an audible sigh of relief as he had succeeded yet another death defying maneuver.

The earthling turned to look over his shoulder to see if he had warranted a reaction from Roshi - …nothing. This guy’s going to kill me! Hiro thought to himself as he calculated his next jump. He didn’t want to take too long between his jumps again; the last time he took a break, Roshi made him start over.

Hiro was preparing to bite off more than he could chew with a very difficult jump – the Turtle Hermit didn’t realize until it was too late. ”No, Hir-“ He tried to intervene, but it was too late. Hiro pushed off the wall with his feet and pulled down on the rock he was currently hanging from, just like Roshi had shown him.

Unlike what Roshi had shown him, Hiro’s jump was nearly twice the distance of any jump he’d performed yet; this was not a safe maneuver from their current altitude. Hiro’s fingertips just barely reached the next protruding rock, but when he formed his grip, he realized that he had grasped nothing but air. Hiro cried in terror as he began to feel gravity pulling his body back down to the Earth.

The earthling fell, as did Roshi. In an effort to decrease reduce their mass, Roshi detached from Hiro and fell separately.

Hiro crashed into several rocky structures on his way down; while the collisions were painful, they were obviously preferable to a free fall to the death. After repeatedly being thrown downwards by gravity along the mountainside, he finally met the ground with an audible THUD.

Everything went black.

“He’s so young and fragile, it’s a miracle he survived taking a tumble like that…”

“Fragile?! He’s young, but this kid is tough as nails!”

“He sure is ripped up; I feel bad for the poor little fella.”

“He shouldn’t have been playing out there by himself, he got himself into this!”

“Oh no, he looks like he received brain damage…his poor mother!”

“Of all places for him to wind up; this place isn’t safe for a kid like him right now!”

Hiro, briefly unable to pry open his eyes after awakening, felt something damp rubbing off on his face. Judging the soft object by its relatively rough texture, he took it to be a damp washcloth.

I…I’ve alive?? But how, I should have been crushed… Hiro thought to himself as he recalled plummeting from the mountainside to the rocky desert terrain below.

After gathering himself, Hiro attempted to unhinge his eyelids. He groaned as light from the lanterns in the room flooded into his retinas. The light was dim, but the earthling’s skull shared a piece if the rough landing; his mind was not as ready to snap back into action as his body was.

Upon recognizing a sign of life from the young human, the occupants of the room filled-in and began to examine him like a test subject. All of a sudden Hiro felt very claustrophobic.

”HEY!” a stern female voice bolted. ”Back off!” Hiro faced the strong female across the room as the other inhabitants of the room parted to make way for her.

She wall tall – for a woman, anyway. She was a relatively attractive woman of a seasoned age – to Hiro she seemed “old,” but that was only Hiro’s skewed perspective (as a thirteen-year-old). Her hair was of a brownish shade but he couldn’t deduce much more than that about her by the dimly illuminated lanterns. He was able to deduce the structure they were inside to be some kind of small hut or one room house. It wasn’t a tent; there was a complete kitchen, bedroom and living space. There were many herbs and pickled animal parts scattered across the room; wherever he’s found himself, it appeared to be some sort of village doctor who believed in homemade remedies for most ailments.

So, little boy…why don’t you tell us how you ended up out there…

“So you see, Master Roshi is probably wondering where I am…” Hiro concluded.

“….Master?” The nice lady asked. Hiro figured her name was Brea – on account of all the other adults referred to her by that name. ”That’s a funny thing for you to call your parents...”

”Oh, no, he’s not my adult. He’s my master! I’m training to be a great martial artist one day!” Hiro explained. Brea and the other adults looked at him puzzlingly.

”Huh? Shouldn’t you want to be a doctor or an astronaut or something?” Brea asked. ”Y’know, like a normal kid?”

Hiro flipped backwards and landed on his hands so that his entire body was perpendicular to the ground. He proceeded to walk around in circles on his hands. ”Do I like like a normal kid to you?” Hiro asked playfully and then stuck his tongue out. Brea giggled momentarily.

”So thanks for looking out for me guys, but like I was saying I really need to find him and make sure he’s alright. I’m sure he’s worried about me too.” Hiro said. That adults in the room looked around at each other, sharing glances. Something was up.

”Well, you see…” One adult began to speak. ”The real problem, Hiro, is that we can’t responsibly let you go on your own.” Brea said before sighing deeply. ”The next time one of the men goes into town to get supplies, I’m sure we could arrange for you to go with him…”

Hiro smirked. ”Guys, there’s no need to worry about me!” He began.

”You don’t understand Hiro….” Brea cut him off. ”I’m sure you’re a really tough kid, Hiro, but we can’t let you take to the roads by yourself while…. Brea stopped and looked about the room, as if she were distracted.

She turned back to Hiro. ”While the child killer is still claiming victims…!” she said. Hiro made note of a single tear rolling down Brea’s cheek. She definitely is emotionally attached to this situation somehow… Hiro thought. I’d better just stick around for a little and make her happy. Besides maybe there really is a child killer on the loose…

Hiro looked upwards at Brea. ”Alright, I’ll stay for a little!” Hiro exclaimed.

”Great!” Brea exclaimed, as her mood changed dramatically. ”Follow me, I’ll introduce you to the other kids!”
