The Saiyan Inferno
|
Before the Harvest The younger brother of Chishan, Apio, had been training. But now he was here. He grunted as he landed on the ground with a hard thud, his shoulders crashing against the polished surface. He let his body roll over his head and slammed his feet into the ground, stopping his wild skid before it got a chance to get going. Pale, empty eyes twisted to look up at his aggressor, his teeth clenched. The ground shook beneath him as his enemy approached. It was a giant, for all he could tell. It stood nearly ten feet tall, its upper form almost completely shadowed by the darkness near the ceiling. Every now and then it would bend down slightly after stepping and a glimmer of its black, soulless eyes could be seen. Its skin was pale blue, like it had been frostbitten from head to toe. Hair covered its knuckles and knees, a mass of matted black moss. It was like something straight out of a fantasy story. It grumbled as it spoke, trying to understand the situation. It knew that this glowing man with the monkey tail was an enemy or, better yet, food. Large plump muscles covered up fat that was surely juicy and delectable. Its dark, grey tongue pierced beyond its lips to lap at its mouth, the idea of this particular dinner enticing the creature forward. All it had to do was get its hands on it, break its neck and then chow down. Apio, on the other hand, had different ideas. Though none of them had involved this ghastly creature. Even as he stared up at the monster, he could remember back to how this all began. He had been training, as he often did in his down time, aboard the Night Fury. The gravitational training chamber was a lot smaller than the one on the Phoenixfall but the difficulty of its programs was far superior. Chishan had been tinkering and improving his old training simulations, creating a simulator that truly tested a warrior’s resolve. Being of the same blood and determination, the younger brother was ready and willing to put his own strength to the test. The training orbs hummed in the air, sounding closer to fans blowing than anything. But their mechanical eyes opened to a beat, unleashing globe after globe of artificial ki energy down upon the transformed man. His glowing eye sockets narrowed as the swarm of blasts came raining down upon him. As they crashed into his form, the image splintered apart like one batting at a plume of fog. He reformed a few feet away, sliding on the tiled floor and spinning around on his heels. In his right hand he held a ball of energy, his fingers keeping it locked against his palm. As the orbs turned slowly to retarget him, he thrust his arm forward and sent the globe soaring up to the closest drone. It smashed into its face, erupting in a brilliant explosion that illuminated the entirety of the room. A sly grin came across his face and his other hand began to glow as well, prepared to launch more attacks on the other drones. But as the smoke cleared, his face wrinkled with surprise. The damn thing was still functioning! Not only that, but a thin energy film was crackling over its surface. It hadn’t even been damaged. The once dark mechanical eye began to glow a bright red, and its brothers matched the light. Suddenly, blasts nearly half the size of him began to plunder the ground around him. He was far too shaken, far too surprised, to do much but stand there and throw up his arms for defense. The explosions around him rocked his body, causing his bones to quake in his skin. For synthetic machines, these things sure packed a punch! He shouldn’t have been so surprised. He fought a few Steel Legion units before their deactivation. Their synthetic energy was strong and their tactics were methodical, capable of planning on attack patterns for almost any type of scenario. It had been his sheer power and speed difference that had set him apart from the lowly units. If he had been weaker, no doubt their impressive coordination would have done him in. And these drones were programmed to mirror his power level, unleashing attacks that were fairly dangerous. Even as the smoke began to clear around him, his arms were covered in bruises and burns that were still sizzling. He hissed between clenched teeth as he looked up at the circling trifecta, their eyes already set on him again. No doubt another barrage was coming his way; he had set the parameters to test him to his very limits. The machines wouldn’t shut down until he was unconscious on the ground. He flexed his hands and rose back to his feet, his aura already beginning to build around him again. His brother could stand up against this training; he must be able to match that level as well! His muscles throbbed and his body ached but he would keep pushing himself no matter what. Or at least he would have it if weren’t for the sudden buzz over the ship’s intercom. As programmed, the simulation began to shut down and the trio of drones began to power off. Slowly they sunk to the ground, their metal bodies sliding towards their middles. In seconds, they were nothing but round discs about the size of a CD, hovering just an inch above the ground. The floor opened up and accepted the three resting drones into their resource stations, ready to rejuvenate them and prepare them for the next training session. As for Apio, he groaned. Just as things were about to get interesting and he was being summoned. With a release of air through his nostrils, he allowed his False Super Saiyan form to fall from him. His hair fell back into its place and his pupils swam back to the surface of his eyes. “What is it?” He said aloud, knowing full well that whoever was calling him could pick up his sound waves. A crackle over the speakers before a voice. “Sorry to interrupt, Apio. But I found something I think you might be interested in.” It was Jurok, Chishan’s first officer. “Is it something Chishan wanted us to look into or something different?” He asked, his curiosity piqued. Something other than training for the day? Sure, he’d bite. “No, it’s a strange reading that maybe you can pinpoint. Come up to the bridge and I’ll explain more.” The younger sibling would have said something further…but decided against it. Questioning it here would be pointless if the full explanation was awaiting him only a few decks above. With another sigh, he turned and marched out the door. Conquering this particular training sequence would have to wait for another day. As he passed through the doors leading to the bridge, he found the thin, gruff saiyan officer waiting for him. Their eyes met instantly. “I happened to be overlooking some of Chishan’s files he uploaded to the Night Fury recently. A lot of history from the Phoenixfall, analyses and recordings of his findings. And I happened upon his files on the Black Star Dragonball he found on Kanassa. He said that after running a scan over the ball, he found it emitted a slight signal that was so high-pitched, it couldn’t be heard by mortal ears. He assumed that the creation of the balls attributed to this…phenomenon. He also recorded that he only picked it up after using a high-frequency sonar. He had created a device that he liked to call a “Dragon Radar” that would help him locate other Dragonballs.” The officer explained quickly. “You found another Black Star ball on Earth?” Apio asked, his eyes snapping to the man. Jurok shook his head. “Not exactly. The signal wasn’t the same. It’s on a lower pitch than the one your brother has. But its definitely a Dragonball of some sort. And there are seven of them down there.” The younger saiyan’s eyes widened. “I’ve heard the tales that if you bring all seven of a set together, you can get a wish granted. Are you saying that an entire set is down on Earth right now?” The officer nodded and added in a small smile. “And I’ve got the exact location of one of them.” And that’s how the young saiyan had found himself down on the planet. He had found the large cave on the mountain and followed its path downwards into the darkness. As he moved further into the depths, he found plenty of other rare stones and minerals embedded in the earth. But nothing as rare as the treasure he was hunting. After a bit of traveling, he had come upon an underground temple. Of course the saiyan was skeptical of ancient temples now, after his run in with Varos. And apparently his skepticism had been well-founded. As he crossed through the entry-way of the door, he found the giant sitting in the center of the room, munching on a bloodied piece of clothing. As the saiyan looked closer, he found it was a snow jacket from a person. Apparently his sudden intrusion on the beast’s dinner had made him the dessert. Finding the Dragonball wasn’t hard; it hung from the creature’s ear on a golden earring. Even in the darkened cave, he could see it shine. He couldn’t make out with starred ball he had found and, in the moment, it really didn’t matter. He had to worry about its owner that had swatted the saiyan away twice so far. “You’re really pissing me off, pal.” The saiyan spat, rising to his feet once more. The giant didn’t answer verbally, instead it kept marching on towards him. He couldn’t take the chance of getting too close again; the massive hands of the monster would surely wrap around him and snap him like a twig. Even with his supernaturally dense body, it wouldn’t be too hard to twist and bend him if he couldn’t control himself. No, there seemed to be only one solution. His hands thrust forward, his fingers splayed and palms facing forwards. With a practiced speed that the giant couldn’t possibly comprehend, his arms pumped in all directions in front of him, tapping the positions unseen in the air to build up energy. The ground shook underneath him from the monster’s approach but he held his ground firm. As ki energy began to glow around his fingers, he brought his arms back to their original positions. His pointer fingers and thumbs met, forming a perfect triangle with the giant in the center. “Suck on this then!” He bellowed as a giant golden globe erupted from his palms, striking the creature in the stomach. Its eyes bugged out as the energy tore through its skin and plunged out the other side of its body, incinerating everything in the middle. Its eyes rolled up into its head and then it fell to its knees, the burned flesh near the hole still sizzling. With a loud thumb it fell back onto the ground, dead. Apio let out a breath and dropped his hands to his sides. “That’s better.” He said softly to himself as he walked over to the corpse, careful to walk around its massive form. He bent down to one knee when he got to the creature’s head. He could see the Dragonball, hanging from the thing’s ear. With a hard tug, he pulled the earring from its hanging spot and brought the orange orb up to the light. Four tiny stars lay in its crystalline center, forever frozen. The saiyan smirked. “One down.” WC: 1,963 |
