Elric let out a long sigh as he looked down into the dark red liquid in his cup. He'd ordered it about half an hour ago but had yet to take a sip. Instead he was savoring the aroma. The inn was calm and the air was still. The only sound polluting his thoughts was the quiet crackling of the fire. The light of which mad the shadow of the wooden mug in-hand dance on the table as he set it down again. His thoughts were deep. He thought of home, Earth, and of his friends there. He also wondered how much stronger they'd gotten in his absence. He felt bad because he'd spent all this time honing his sword skills, not getting very much stronger. Still, it was a necessary skill. Fists alone might not always do it, and if he was going to carry a sword he should damn well know how to use it. Just as Elric was settling in, ready to kick back in his chair and snooze for a bit before he left into the cold night, a figure came before him. It was a dark shadowy figure, it took a near human shape before the Zaun, but said nothing to him. Elric's head slowly lifted from his drink to see the shadow. He was taken a bit off guard, and tilted a little too far back in his chair. The chair rattled as it fell to the ground and he stood to face the creature. At first he looked in disbelief, but when he rubbed his eyes and it still stood, a towering shadow before him with eyes glowing red, he knew it had to be real. "What are you? What do you want?" Elric commanded, his hand resting on the butt of his sword's hilt, warning that if the thing made a move he didn't like, he'd cut it in two. Giving it a glare that would rival the Phagian Berserker, Lysses', he waited for a reply. "Assistance, if you can spare it." The ghastly figure groaned. The way it sounded was so weak, it reminded Elric of Shamshire the last time they spoke. "Please, hear my tale before you make up your mind." The ghost groaned, retracting its arm back into itself. Elric looked it over, seeing it as no real threat. He tapped the button on the side of his scouter. The power level came back as nearly nonexistent. Whatever this thing was, it wasn't going to be able to hurt Elric even if it tried. "Alright, let's hear it then." Elric said, crossing his arms and relaxing his shoulders. "I'm not sure how much longer I have to tell you this, so I'll be quick. There's a group of mercenaries that have been killing the innocent inhabitants of the town. That's why this place is so baron. They operate out of an old factory down the hill from here. I too, was one of their victims. It was with great determination was I able to manifest myself to ask for assistance. Please, I beg of you, stop them before they've killed everyone." The ghoul rambled on. Elric scratched his chin. He wasn't sure why someone would just start killing inhabitants, there had to be a reason. "What purpose do they have behind the killings? I'm sure it's not just nonsensical slaying. They'd not be killing so many without a cause." Elric hummed in reply. He looked deeply again at his drink. "Are you telling me you think they might have justifications for their actions?!" The ghoul groaned, appalled by what he thought Elric was saying. "No, but I need to know what I'm dealing with here. If they're using the life force for some kind of world-breaker device, if they're gaining power from it, et cetera." Elric jabbed calmly. He didn't take kindly jumping to conclusions. He was a strategist, no matter how much he'd like to rely on instincts now in fights, he'd like to address the situation with at least some form of caution. "Hm, I suppose you're right. I apologize. Yes, I should have mentioned, their stealing the souls of their victims for longer life spans. I'm not sure how they're doing it-" "And I don't much care, that's all I needed to hear." Elric cut off the ghost. "I give you my word they'll be dealt with. You can rest easy. I'm sorry you had to perish for them to be stopped, but I'll not let your efforts to contact me be in vain." Elric said, replacing the chair he'd knocked over. He dumped his mug of drink into the fire, causing it to roar a bright purple, and placed it on the counter for the barkeeper to find when he returned. He left money to pay for his drink, and a decent tip. He didn't have small change, so he was really just being quick rather than generous. Whatever these things were, Elric wasn't going to let these guys fight the laws of death. Nobody cheats death, it's an inevitability. They'd pay for stealing the lives of others, that was for sure. Elric clenched his fists. He'd still been in his second form, still trying to master it. It'd been three whole days since he'd been gifted it by Shamshire, and still it hadn't faded. Still, it might have been a bit draining, but he was sure he could handle whomever was taking the lives of the inhabitants. 908 908 |

Elric kept his cloak snug around him as he walked through the blowing snow. With the snow crunching under each step, he looked onward with a glaring determination in his eyes. He only removed his hands from his cloak for a moment to switch on his scouter so that he could find this factory more quickly. He saw many small blips for powers in the high hundreds, but other than that there was only one small group of strong powers. Each of them at around ten-thousand, they'd be no match for Elric when he got there. There were three in total, and he could tell that they had to be the ones the ghostly figure spoke of. They were at what looked to be a factory with smoke pluming out of the chimney signaling someone had to be there. There was no pretending that they weren't there, it was clear. Elric was making a bee-line for them, and they had no idea. Under his cloak, his left hand gripped the hilt of his katana. He was ready for this. He needed to assert himself as a threat to all those who tried to cheat death, and an enemy to those who were already dead and walking among the living. The closer he got to the group, the more his skin burned. It was the markings, but he knew that all too well. It meant that he was getting closer to unnatural beings. Demons, or just people who'd lived far longer than they should have. That would mean that the Avalonians are not the first to be plagued by their presence. That just meant the retribution would be even greater. Elric pushed through the main doors of the facility, letting the blaring wind announce his arrival as it carried snow several feet into the factory. As the doors closed behind him, in one swift motion, Elric tossed his cloak to the side and approached the three alien looking men sitting around a furnace in the center of the factory. He had certainly made his presence known, but they all three just stood in shock at his arrival. "Hey kid, you sure you're supposed to be hear right now? Shouldn't you be off hiding like the rest of 'em?" the fatter of the three chuckled, his toad-like neck bulging as he did so. Elric got closer, and as he did the marking on his arms burned with the intensity of the sun. He growled in anger at them for being the cause of that pain. "No, I'm right where I need to be to put an end to your three." Elric said with a smirk. "Yeah, and what makesssss you think you can sssstop ussss?" a very slender and serpent-like man stood from his seat as he hissed. His voice definitely matched his appearance, there was no doubting that. "I am the Hand of Shamshire, the God of Time and Passing. By the law of the universe I will bring your unnatural lives to a late end. Your soul-stealing days are finished, and I will bring your reckoning." Elric commanded as though he'd rehearsed the line. In reality it was off the top of his head, and he didn't much care how it sounded to them, all they had to get from it was they were about to die. "Huh, you and what army, kid?" The big guy laughed again. Elric let out a short scoff himself before dashing forward and slamming his palm into the man's many chins. He took a look at the others who seemed astonished by his speed. "What, didn't quite see that? Let me show you a replay!" Elric growled. As if by some sort of magic, he and the toad-like gentleman were back in their previous positions, but the toad man was still knocked out cold. Dashing forward again, he slammed his open palm again into the man's chin, sending him flying onto the floor just as he did before. "Catch it that time? Or do I need to do it again?" "Real funny kid!" The snake man barked, but the third man didn't reply at all, he was quiet in shock, or perhaps fear. "For a guy who seems so much like a snake, I'd think you would have a forked tongue." Elric smirked, drawing his blade. He held it out in front of him and kept the confident smirk on his face. "I'm sure I could fix that faster than you can beg me not to." "Wh--" The man began to question but was cut off by Elric's sword slicing through his upperlip, down through his tongue, and piercing his jaw before stopping halfway down his chest. As Elric pulled his sword out of the man's diaphragm, let's just say that his body couldn't operate with a forked heart. His attention immediately turned to the last standing gentleman. He stepped towards him, shaking the blood off of his blade. "And you, the quiet one, any first and last words?" Elric smirked as he stepped towards the man who backed into a wall. As Elric got closer, the man got progressively more concerned, until suddenly he grinned. Elric's scouter beeped with a power just behind him, the toad man. Elric quickly flipped his blade and thrust it through the chest of the man behind him. It seemed to happen instantly, but in truth Elric was tapping into Shamshire's time-manipulating power a little more than usual. He was able to turn entirely around and stab the man through the center of his chest without it looking like anything more than a blink. "Trying to sneak up on the Hand of Shamshire, quite a naive move." Elric sighed, astounded by his opponent's stupidity. In a quick swirling motion, he pulled his blade from the toad man's chest and lunged forward, slashing the throat of the quiet blue man whom tried to lure him into the toad man's trap. The act seemed quite cold, but Elric had no mercy for the trio. They had more than proven themselves as the scum he had already knew they were. He shook the blood from his blade again and made his way to the door. He stopped only to pick up his cloak and to cover himself again for the journey back to the inn for another drink. When he took his seat again, the figure took shape again before him. Elric raised his hand to dismiss what he thought was incoming thanks. "They are dead, but the creatures that gave them the ability are not. I fear I cannot find peace until I'm sure this can never happen again. Please, won't you do this one last thing for me?" 1,119 2,027 |
