The Saiyan Inferno
|
“You found a what?” Apio stood in front of his brother, a smug grin on his face. In his hand, held up for all to see, was the shining orange ball he had retrieved from the giant. Despite having been underground for Kais knew how long, it still had a pristine sheen around its form that almost made it glow against the light. The four dark orange stars in its center seemed to always stay put, as if they were moving around on in the inside of the orb. “I don’t think I stuttered. Maybe my amazing feat is just too hard to comprehend. I got a Dragonball, Chishan.” The younger sibling said, his pride carrying his voice. The Saiyan Inferno was stunned. Not by the fact that his brother had completed the deed but more so that he was even able to begin it. The Dragonballs were not easy objects to find, hidden in the deep recesses of planets. This was sometimes out of luck or other times because some organism had found one without knowing what it was. Whatever the reason or circumstance, they were considered relics of legendary status; undertaking a quest for them was considered as epic as taking part in a pilgrimage for the Holy Grail. Chishan, himself, had been lucky to find one on Kanassa. But here was his younger brother, proudly holding one up for him and the crew to see. “It’s magnificent. A true gem if I’ve ever seen one.” Jurok said, leaning in close to admire it. The rest of the Night Fury’s crew was huddled right behind him, all of their eyes transfixed on the honey-colored ball. “Apio, do you have any idea what you’ve found?” The older brother asked, looking at the other man. The saiyan’s grin seemed to widen. “Gathered one of the stones that can grant us great power, of course. I read your logs on the balls; I know what they’re capable of doing. A single wish of anything we desire. That sounds like something worth searching for, wouldn’t you say? Besides, you lost your old one in the crash. I figured replacing it would be a nice gesture.” The Lightning Lord couldn’t help it. His lips spread and the laugh that escaped echoed inside the small room. “You’ve got some great luck there, brother. This entire time I’ve been looking past the small things that could help us in our quests and then you step in and find the best means of doing it. Great work.” He reached forward and clasped Apio on the shoulder. “Aw come on now, you’ve going to make me blush.” The younger one said with a wry smirk. He brought the orb down between them and moved it forward, offering it to Chishan. “I imagine you’ve got a secure place for this?” The older saiyan took the Dragonball in his right hand, feeling its weight and surface. The perfectly smooth crystal was cool to the touch, sending his mind back to over a year ago. The dark halls of the ancient Kanassan temple and the hairy beast that attacked him from the shadows came flying back to the front of his memories. He could still feel the razor blade teeth piercing the flesh of his arm and smell the old, fiery breath of the monster. It was in the stomach of that creature he had found the treasure, covered in flesh and matter he would rather not remember. Kais, it had been a beauty even then. “It looks different than the one you had before, doesn’t it?” Apio noted. Jurok took a step forward. “When Apio and I utilized the ship’s scanner to locate it, we noticed its difference. We based it against the logs you had uploaded to our databases. The sonic waves were weaker than the original Dragonball you had observed and there are more of them, seven of them to be exact. A full set, according to our initial readings. Apio hummed as he stared at the ball. “The stars are different too. The ones he originally had encased five black stars while this one has four red stars. I wonder if that’s the reason for the different energy signatures. Or perhaps that’s a lasting trademark of its creator?” The first officer’s brow furrowed slightly. “Creator? You think someone actually made these things?” Apio nodded. “It’s just like Archonias said. Everything has a beginning and an end. No doubt these objects were created by someone and imbued them with magical energy. That’s about the only thing that makes sense for them to even exist. The real question is; who did it?” Jurok shrugged. “Maybe it was him and the other one…Varos? Or maybe the Avatars of Justice. There is still a lot we don’t know about either one of those groups. And they lived thousands of years ago. And given what you’ve told us, there’s no doubt that had the power to create objects like these.” A moment of silence before Apio’s snapped. “Or the Kais! Chishan told me that they had a much stronger presence in the universe eons ago; they could have created these as a reward for the most determined adventurers like myself. That would make sense!” “Or…”Chishan said, interrupting the brain storming session going on in front of him. “It’s something much simpler than you’re making it out to be.” Both of the other saiyans turned to look at him. “What do you mean?” They asked together. Chishan smiled gently as he moved around them to the closest monitor, sliding into the seat swiftly and smoothly. His hands flew to the laser grid keyboard, fingers punching the invisible keys. The monitor swapped away from its resting screen and immediately dove into the archives inside the ship, flipping through multiple files until it settled on a certain program. It expanded to take up the entire screen. Chishan tapped a key near the top of the board and the screen went black, transferring the image to the main projector in the center of the bridge. The holographic projects flashed to light and began to hum gently as they displayed the file for all to see. In the center of the screen was the Earthen Dragonball, the number one star to be exact. On its right hovered the number one star of the Black Star Dragonballs. And on its left was another Dragonball, though it was nearly ten times the size of the other two. They spun slowly as if on an axis. The Saiyan Inferno stood up in front of the projection. “The Dragonballs are actually a creation by the Namekians. Utilizing stones and models of dragons, certain members that belonged to the Dragon Clan caste can forge the magical balls. Generally it takes about one hundred days for the ritual to be complete and reflects the creator’s design to the dot. The Earth Dragonballs were created by Kami many years ago. The Blackstar Dragonballs were created even before that by some unnamed namekian. And the Namekian Dragonballs are the creation of Guru, the leader of their race. Each set has its own properties; such as the Namekian ones being able to grant three wishes. No one knows what powers the Blackstar balls hold for no one has ever used them. In fact, they were thought to be lost last I checked.” Chishan turned back to the group behind him. “I had studied the lore behind the relics during my training with Roshi. They fascinated me because up to that point, I only believed ki energy to be a driving force in the universe. Magic seemed so…farfetched. It wasn’t until I met Kami that I learned differently.” “So it…wasn’t anything grand at all. It was simple a couple of namekians imbuing stones with magical energy.” Apio said, his voice a bit disappointed. Chishan smiled. “That may be so but that’s still a phenomenal event, isn’t it? Human alchemists tried for years to change one material to another, convinced they could turn stone to gold or water to wine. But only a couple hundred light-years away, a group of aliens spend over three months focusing their ki and magical energy to create these orbs that summon a mystical and powerful dragon. It’s incredible, isn’t it?” Apio looked at his brother and then back at the balls still circling in front of them. And then he chuckled softly. “Yeah, I guess it is.” Jurok cut his attention away from the mesmerizing display to look at his captain. “So what’s the plan then? We’ve got one of the balls and we need six more.” The Lightning Lord grinned. “I’ve built a Dragon Radar directly into my scouter. I can take the three balls that are located in the northern hemisphere. Apio, you start looking for the next two with Monica. I’m sure the two of you can handle doing that since you’re so good at finding them now?” The younger brother smirked. “Please, I’ll be able to find both of them before she can even fly in the right direction.” And as he finished saying that, he moved past the group to the door, most likely heading down to the lower decks to talk to the former assassin. For Chishan, he continued to stand there watching his brother. The rest of the crew moved back to their designated spots, the allure of the history lesson lost on them now. He turned his hand over again, looking at the pristine orb that he clutched so tightly. It was true he felt the need to use his wish for more power. No doubt he could make himself quite the formidable warrior if he asked the great dragon for it. He had heard stories of the many wishes the dragon could grant. Power, wealth, immortality. All of them were mouth-watering and desirable. But there was one wish that seemed to stand out to him even more so… The ability to bring back someone who has died. Chishan had come to terms with Matilda’s death. He had to if he ever wanted to move forward with his life. He would still be stuck in the same angry loop he had been in during the beginning of the war if he hadn’t. But being over it doesn’t mean he would pass up the opportunity to bring her back. After all, if the power was his to use, why shouldn’t he? She had lost her life so young; she deserved another chance to live and grow old. Maybe even with him. A glimmer of hope seemed to sparkle in his eyes as he gripped the orb just a bit tighter. He had been handed another chance, by his brother of all people. He wasn’t about to put that to waste. He would use this wish the only way he could; the right way. WC: 1,809 |
