“Well, the dragonball is definitely in this city.”

Apio tapped his scouter gently, trying to get a good reading on the scans before his vision. A thunderstorm had begun to rumble in the sky above, the rain threatening to unleash itself on the city below. Interference in his scouter was expected…but it didn’t make it any less annoying.

“I just can’t get an exact reading.” He mumbled, loud enough for the female behind him to hear. She turned around to face him.

“Safe to say the electrical currents being kicked up by the storm are affecting your scouter. I’ll give it a try on mine.” And as she finished speaking, she reached up to her temple and pressed her fingers to it. Underneath the skin was a small button, connected to the cybernetic ally enhanced eyeball in the right socket.

The saiyan’s brow furrowed as he turned around to look at her. “Yours? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you with a scouter. Where the hell would you keep it?” He asked, running his eyes over her form. She carried no pack and had no pockets on her clothing deep enough to hold such a device. Though perhaps she could keep it underneath her clothing, a rogue thought popped into his head. His eyes narrowed as he took the idea seriously, analyzing the tight black leather for any abnormalities.

To the assassin, it just looked like the man was checking her out. “When you’re done staring at my rack, you could direct your attention to my eye!” She hissed at him, causing his head to suddenly jerk up.

“I wasn’t-…”

“Never mind. My right eye has a synthetic polymer coated over it that is connected to a cybernetic upgrade inside my temple here. The chip allows me to utilize scanning methods similar to your scouter as well as connect to databases I have access to. It’s standard issue for my former organization.” She didn’t even look at him, her annoyance for his presence fairly obvious by the look on his face.

Apio scoffed. “Your organization had a lot of fun little toys then. Hard to believe you’d leave. Or that they’d let you get away with hardware such as that.”

When she didn’t answer right away, he looked over at her. Her anger had melted away seemingly and was replaced with one that could only be described as furtive. Where her mind was at, he had no idea but her aversion to the statement made him even more suspicious.

She must have sensed this because she turned her head slightly to look at him. “Chishan told you why I left. And I stand by that. As for the organization, as far as they know I’m deep undercover in a guerrilla militia in the south. My next target was a radical upstart that was trying to incite revolution. It could take weeks, months, even years for me to get the perfect opportunity to kill him and escape. They know this; this isn’t the first time I’ve gone dark on missions. They’ll hear from me when the mission is up.”

The saiyan’s face was stoic. “What happens when they find out you’ve gone AWOL?”

“I haven’t planned that far ahead yet.”

He waited a beat before he nodded. “Fair enough.” His eyes moved away from the blonde and back towards the center of the small city. “It would be a lot easier if I could just connect with Night Fury’s scanner. But that damn interference…”

“It’s affecting mine too. I can’t connect to the Night Fury or any database in the nearby region. We might as well be on a beach with a metal detector.”

Apio blinked, confused. “So we have to rely on our own power to find this tiny little orange ball?”

She nodded, though it was evident on her face that she was not pleased either. “Exactly.”

He couldn’t help but sigh, embracing his face with his hand. “Perfect. That won’t take forever at all.” As he sat there, groaning and wallowing in self-pity, the assassin noticed something down in the window of the diner across the street. A flimsy piece of paper, haphazardly taped to the inside of the glass. But it was the figure near the top of it that seemed familiar.

She leapt down from the edge of the building and landed softly on the sidewalk, glancing around for any signs of people watching. No one. Good. Though she was not on some assassination mission that required the upmost aloofness, she still gave in to her training’s sense of awareness. Careful of your surroundings, note any abnormal changes in people’s behavior and always have an escape route. Important lessons for those that needed to be one with the shadows before striking. Satisfied that the lack of crowd was because of the waning day and the thunderstorm brewing, she set across the street to investigate further the target of her curiosity.

Meanwhile, Apio was still coming to grips with the harsh reality of their situation. Chishan had it simple; find the three balls with his extremely advanced scouter in the same timeframe that he and Monica could find one. Apio had been extremely lucky when Jurok discovered the first ball and no doubt that luck had turned against him now. It had been too easy, too simple. Even the monster that had been wearing the sphere was dispatched with one attack. No, fate saw fit to challenge the younger saiyan now with a mission of near impossible standards. Like finding a singular atom inside an ocean.

“Hey! Come down here!”

His head removed itself from his palm, his eyes wide and his brow furrowed. When had she moved? How had he not sensed it? She was across the street, calling him to her to look at something near the window? The younger brother of Chishan couldn’t help but be impressed with the level of stealth this girl could utilize. No wonder she was one of the most wanted assassins on the planet.

He leapt off the building and landed near the center of the street, swiftly moving to her side as she pointed at the poster in the store. Hope grew bright again in his eye as he saw the five star Dragonball printed on the parchment, with tiny lines to represent its glow as well.

His vision expanded to incorporate the rest of the poster, realizing that it wasn’t just some piece of paper declaring a find.

No, it was an advertisement. For a dance contest.

“Penguin Village Historical Society presents ‘An Evening Of Song and Dance’.” Monica read aloud. “Honored guests will be treated to a night of soothing orchestral music and fine cuisine to celebrate the historical society’s twentieth year of existence. Later on in the evening, there will be a ballroom dance contest with the grand prize being one of the legendary and exclusive Dragon balls. All residents of Penguin Village are invited. Ballroom Dance contestants may apply during event. Hmm.”

Slowly she turned to look at him, with a twinkle in her eyes that he hadn’t seen before. He knew what it was immediately. “Wait a damn minute. You’re not thinking…”

She couldn’t help but grin. “Apio. Would you like to go to the ball with me?”

“This is ridiculous.”

Apio the saiyan stood outside Penguin Village High School, dressed to the nines in formal attire. He and Monica had taken a slice of the zeni they had and used it at the local clothing store, each one purchasing the most expensive and extravagant articles so as to impress. They needed to look the parts, especially since they’d be pretending to be residents of the small village.

He rubbed his hands against his smooth black pants, his face a testament to his dislike of the fabric. The pants felt strange, the white shirt was tight against his skin and the jacket didn’t give him much room to move around in. And the tie, never again would he be wearing a damned tie. He was lucky the cashier at the store knew how to tie one and pre-tied it for him or else he’d still be tussling with the stupid thing. He tugged at it gently the more he thought about it.

The human girl had gone off somewhere to change, citing that a man should never see his date before she’s ready. To be frank, that sounded stupid to him. On Vegeta-sei, everyone wore armor decorated in battle scars. That was their formal wear and the more signs of battle, the more impressed their mate would be. No one prettied up for one another; what you got was the real deal. He sighed. What he wouldn’t give to see the warrior women of his race again.

The sound of someone clearing their throat caught his attention. He turned his head slightly to look at the source of the interruption. And then his jaw nearly hit the ground.

All thoughts of Vegeta-sei, his wanton to gaze at the saiyan women in their battle gear seemed to melt away at the sight of Monica in her pink gown. He was so used to her dressed in her black leather suit, always giving him an attitude and acting like a know-it-all. But here, standing before him in the frills and the fanciful gloves, he couldn’t help but be in awe. Underneath all that hardened walls, she was a beautiful woman underneath.

She noticed his stare and the slightest of blushes came across her cheeks. No one had ever been struck by lightning by her before. It was…odd. She couldn’t describe the feeling. She had been there moments before, similarly surprised by how good he looked in his full suit. For a full-blooded brute, he cleaned up real nice.

All the duo could do was stand there, attempting to find words. It shouldn’t have been so hard to get past their reconvention and head into the ball. After all, they had an entire elaborate lie to play for the next couple of hours before they could get to the dance contest.

“You uh…you look good.” Apio finally managed, pulling his jaw back up and reaffirming himself.

“Thanks…you too.” She said, not meeting his gaze. Another moment of awkward silence followed before she finally spoke again. “So are you ready for this?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” He said, pulling the flaps of his jacket together to put the top button in. He glanced at her. “Do you even know how to dance?”

She scoffed. “I am trainer in the art of camouflage. I was taught to ballroom dance when I was thirteen. What about you, mister saiyan warrior?”

He couldn’t help but smirk a bit. “Battle is a dance itself. I have no doubt I will be able to adjust accordingly.”

She matched his smirk with one of her own as she moved forward, sliding her arm in between his. He did his best to ignore the goose bumps that rose on his arm and neck. She looked up at him.

“Shall we then?”
