The quiet crackling of the fire was gone. It was replaced now by the blurring whirl of the wind as it whipped snow into Elric's face. He'd wrapped his face in a scarf, only allowing his eyes to peek through. Though somehow, that seemed to be enough for the weather to get in. Elric's face was cold and numbing as he mad his way towards what should be a more temperate wasteland. He'd fly regularly, but flying in conditions like this would be hazardous. He could barely see three feet in front of him, so it was doubtful he could stop if say a tree or a mountain appeared in front of him. Instead, he relied on his two feet and his heartbeat.

With the wind at his back, he was making good time. The wastelands were supposedly only three miles out from the inn, and he'd be willing to guess he wasn't more than a quarter mile away now. H was glad too, because he was beginning to lose feeling in his face, despite the burning markings that should have been keeping him warm. Then again, he'd stopped feeling their pain hours ago, so perhaps they'd finally cooled. Whether or not they had, he continued on, seeing now green in front of him a few hundred yards. Quickly, with the realization the way was clear, he took to the skies!

Shaking off the burden of the cold weather behind him, Elric threw off his coat and became enthralled in the sun's rays. The gentle and relaxing warmth returned to his body, but not to the point where it was burning. He raised his hand to his face, feeling the markings finally. He was too anxious about it being more painful if he touched them before, how one wouldn't fiddle around touching an open wound in fear it'd sting. They were indeed much larger marking than before, the dark spikes reaching closer to his mouth and eyes. The markings on his arms had been a clear reflection of the growth of the markings on his face, he knew that now. His hair still had streaks of the bright purple color, a strange change, but one he kind of liked. He brushed it out of his eyes with a smile.

Before him stood a spectre like the one in the bar, except this one seemed much more stout and a bit shorter. It's eyes too glowed red, and it's hand came out of it's amorphous body and pointed off and into the distance. Elric wasn't sure if it was going to speak or not for a moment, and he'd almost just went off in the direction it pointed when it finally did.

"There is the most benevolent of creatures in the wastelands here. It's the only one of it's kind, to my knowledge, and it is how the men in the mountain village had gotten their power." The ghostly figure groaned, a heavy burden on it clearly. Elric could tell this spirit was weaker, perhaps it'd been dead a lot longer. Maybe even one of the victims of the beast itself and not the men. Elric nodded to let the man know he was ready for the rest of his message, but at the same time hoped he didn't strain himself too much.

"It too feeds on the souls of men to keep it's youth. It's metabolism seems to be much greater however, only having eaten a soul every few years when someone wanders into these parts unexpectedly. I too was victim of it's dastardly ways. Kais, it seems like eons ago. I long for the time when I can rest." The spirit groaned. Elric didn't expect an explanation for how the many got their ability to sustain themselves of souls from the creature. He was more focused on ending it.

"You're safe to rest now, spirit. Peace will be with you short enough." Elric said with a bow. His hand instinctively wrapped around the hilt of his blade. The look on his face was blank. Not one of sinister intentions or the look of a man going off for vengeance. Instead he carried the look of a man doing his duty. Though his hair and garb looked a bit disheveled, he was calm. His only want right there and then was to finish his job so he could rest.

Taking the direction of the spectre's pointing hand, Elric clicked on his scouter to see how far away this beast was. Until that point, Elric thought he'd be out here for hours looking. Instead, he saw the reading on his scouter show it was a short five-hundred feet ahead of him. He let a small smirk crawl on his face, but not one of arrogance. This smirk was paired with a small chortle of satisfaction. He'd be able to rest sooner than he thought. After this ordeal was done, he'd release his transformation and get a good night's sleep for once.

The twisting and turning path through the forest was turned into a short ordeal as Elric sped through the air, bobbing and weaving through the trees with his bullet-time-like vision of the world around him. Though Shamshire was quite, his blessing was still upon the boy. The speed he was traveling and the speed he was seeing were two very different things. He was outside what looked to be the den of the beast in no time. Raising his palm to the mouth of the cave, Elric shot a small Ki blast towards the creature's location. There was a long paused as it shot into the darkness. After what seemed like an eternity, it finally exploded.

The low rumble of earthen rock crumbling inside was worrying for a moment. Elric feared he'd buried the beast and wouldn't be able to confirm it's death. Though, to his relief the beast let out a loud growl as the rumbling settled. For a short moment, the air was still again before Elric could hear the scraping of it's claws on the rock beneath them. What appeared in the mouth of the cave sniffing the air like a hungry tiger was something unlike any creature Elric had seen before. Much uglier than anything on Earth, and certainly not as cool looking as a Kassack from Juno. The creature's long tong whipped in the air, as though he was tasting the aromas rather than smelling them.

"Damn, you're one ugly beast, aren't you?" Elric laughed. He drew his blade and waited for the thing to pick up his scent, taking a cautious but confident stance where he stood. The beast took only a second more to lunge at him, wrapping it jaws around the blade of his sword. Realizing it wasn't grasping any meat, the monster shook it's head wildly trying to tear the sword from Elric's grip. Elric's hand held tight as his free hand cocked back and he thrust an open-palmed strike towards the beast's snout.

With a sharp whine the beast released it's bite on the sword and stepped back a moment before lunging at Elric again. This time, Elric stepped out of the way, dashing towards the beast's side with his blade outstretched. His blade dug into it's pelt deep, splitting it's side open from it's shoulder to it's hip. The blood ran quick, but the beast didn't acknowledge the gash except with a growl of anger. Elric had winged it now, it wasn't out for just food, but for revenge. A laughable cause in the eyes of Elric.

The beast was weak in comparison. It was stronger than all the men in the factory combined, but still, a single entity against Elric in this state, he'd have a hard time finding a good match that wasn't Chishan. Less he ran into the changeling man from the Astral realm, but something told Elric that wasn't a run-in he'd survive. The Zaun's blade dripped of blood before he shook it clean, letting it splatter on the ground, before putting it back in his scabbard. This beast wasn't long for this world, and he didn't need his blade to finish the job. Instead, he raised his palm towards the beast.

"By the Hand of Shamshire, I release you of your unnatural bond to this realm. You're free to rest your tired spirit." Elric recited as Ki swelled into his palm. The necklace around his neck danced around wickedly, signaling it's activation. As the beam erupted, the beast was blown away, eradicating the planet of it's burden, and restoring a bit of balance to the universe. For the first time in his life, he felt comfortable with the title 'Grim Reaper'. It was his job, not that he enjoyed it, but it was his place in this world. He'd been given purpose by Shamshire's hand, and he'd only lived this long thanks to the patron, so he felt it his duty to try and balance the universe. At the very least, he could try and shift it more towards balance.

With the smoldering ashes of the beast at his feet, Elric shot through the air back to where he'd met the second spirit. He was relieved to see that the spirit was no longer there and that it could rest easy thanks to him. He let out a sigh and laid in the grass. He figured with the day he'd had, he deserved a nap.

"I must say, I'm impressed with your new sense of responsibility." Shamshire said, sounding much healthier and perkier than he had in ages. Elric was surprised, and caught himself with a bit of a grin.

"It's about time you woke up. What has it been, a week since you gave me this gift?" Elric laughed releasing the power and the markings from his skin. The sensation he got from them going away was one of impeccable relief.

"Wait a minute, I thought I was clear that this wasn't a toy for you to break out every time you got bored!" Shamshire barked.

"Relax, I never released it from when you gave it to me. I've been busy trying to master it. I think I've just about got it too." Elric said with an arrogant smirk.

"Ugh," Shamshire scoffed, stunned by Elric's reply. He couldn't believe that Elric had sustained the form for a week straight. "Well, then excuse my temper. I'm even more so impressed now, boy. You're shaping up to be quite the pupil. But tell me, why the sudden change about the whole 'Grim Reaper' deal?"

"It was simple really when I had time to think about it. As a kid, you don't want to know you're going to grow up and have all this responsibility. Especially if that responsibility is keeping the balance between the realm of the living and the dead. People have gone too long thinking that there wasn't any consequence for their actions to prolong their lives, so much so that the line between living and dead has become blurred. I figure, with the time I have in this life I might as well try and help make it easier for you with the next avatar." Elric laughed, thinking way too far into the future for his own good.

"So, what makes someone living? Does that not mean you wish to get rid of me, and the rest of the Patrons?" Shamshire quipped.

"What do you mean? You guys are gods!" Elric retorted, confused.

"Yes, but he have consciousness, does our lack of physical form really mean we are not alive? Or are we immortal for good reasons? And what reasons are good reasons? You might find yourself asking these questions. Your quest is noble and selfless, I'll give you that. I just pray that you're not doing it for the wrong reasons, you understand? I want to be very clear, the line is and always has been blurred. You can't reinstate some sort of natural law when the laws have been broken since the beginning of time itself. You can only hope to eradicate those who are doing so for selfish and unjust purposes." Shamshire explained, giving Elric all sorts of things to think about that he didn't even imagine before.

"You once said, 'All things live, all things grow, all things die'." Elric hummed.

"So?" Shamshire inquired, unsure of where Elric was going with this.

"Did you mean that in a literal sense. Or were you warning me about this moment here, what you're talking about when you said what I know about the living and the dead might come into question?" Elric said seriously.

"I suppose it was more broad than just the literal sense, yes." Shamshire sighed, not having thought of it like that.

"At the time, I thought it was a foreshadowing of my relationship with Yayva. When she decided I was a piece of filth that she wanted nothing to do with, I supposed I was right." Elric sighed, putting his hands behind his head. "Now I'm wondering if that was just me being a love-struck fool or not."

"What if I told you that not everything that dies, stays dead?"
