Darkness...

Bleak...empty...darkness...

Why was it always darkness? Surely there was something other than darkness. But no, when pressed there was nothing beyond that. All he had ever known was darkness. There was no way that could be true. He knew deep within that there was more than just this. If only he could remember something....

Wait. There! A glimmer of light. A radiant beam cutting through the darkness and bringing with it the impression of something. A sound. One that he knew from long ago, and one that he had not heard for what seemed a lifetime. Laughter.

When it broke through the gloom he could feel his spirit lift. If he was aware of a physical being it would be smiling. The sound was innocent and sweet. Feminine in nature. It was that of a child. One that he felt should be closer to him. One that for some reason he felt a tug of regret over. Where was she though? Surely if he could hear her she must be near.

He tried to push through the veil and reach out for the sound. It was as if he were buried under a million grains of sand and with each attempt he only sunk deeper and deeper into it.

"No!" He shouted within.

He struggled again and for a brief moment he saw the smiling face of a little girl. But then the smile faded and in that brief moment he knew that his regret was due to this little girl. The laughter stopped and he heard a loud crack like that of a gunshot, and then the girl screamed.

“He’s flat lining!”

The long drawn out death note carried throughout the room and over the commotion of half a dozen nurses and doctors rushing into the room.

“What the hell happened!?” the doctor demanded of the lead nurse.

“I don’t know sir. He’s been unresponsive for days and not a thing has changed until now. It was like he suddenly just quit fighting.” A redheaded woman replied.

“Damn it! Where’s my crash cart!?”

A nurse quickly responded by pulling over a cart with a machine and paddles on it. She adjusted a few dials before a whirring noise filled the air.

“Clear!” The doc shouted as he placed the paddles against the John Doe’s chest.

A loud pulse of energy shot forth and the man’s body jumped on the table. Still the life support machines screeched as if mocking the medical team. Thrice more the doctor charged and shocked the man, trying in vain to resuscitate him. He cranked up the voltage once more and placed the paddles. As the shock surged and the patient’s body bucked the doctor was taken off guard suddenly as the dying man shot up from the bed, knocking him to the floor.

His eyes must have been deceiving him. There was no way, it must have been the shock of it but he could have sworn that his eyes were glowing white, no discernible iris or pupil. Light seemed to seep from every orifice and he could see in the others as well that their hair was on end. It felt as if they were all standing next to a high voltage generator, the energy palpable in the thrum within their chests.

The unnamed man looked around as if he weren’t truly seeing at all. Without so much as laying a hand on anyone the nurses were shoved back suddenly by an invisible force, flying backward before hitting walls or equipment. As everyone watched the patient his eyes locked on the doctor before a voice seemed to come from all around them but the words were unintelligible. The only thing that was for certain was they did not bode well and this man was not an ordinary man. As quickly as the episode took place something changed within the man. Suddenly the glow dissipated and instead of a creature in its place stood an average man. His crystalline eyes roamed over the scene. The feeling of intimidation was completely gone and all that remained in its place was a man whom seemed scared and confused.

Before anyone could react he darted for the window. With a flying leap he shattered through the plate glass and out into the open air. The doctor rushed to the window to see the escapee crouched on the grass three stories below completely unharmed.

“Call security!” He shouted, but he knew it was too late. The man, or whatever he was, was gone.

As he ran he heard the sound of cars swerving to avoid him. He heard shouts from behind but he didn’t look back. He knew that he needed to do whatever it took to get out of the public eye and find someplace to collect his wits. His head felt muddled. The more he tried to focus the worse it got. It was as if he was in between the real world and a dream. Something felt off but he couldn’t be sure what it was. He hoped that finding a place to rest might help.

As soon as he could he jumped off into an alleyway, leaning back against the wall to catch his breath. After a moment he realized that he really had no need to catch his breath. Although he might not know much about himself he could tell one thing…he was in shape. The cool of the building behind him seeped into his skin and he felt a rush of relief. A sudden intake of breath drew his attention to the right. A young homeless woman looked up from her resting place and caught his eyes. After a second her eyes once more roamed down him before a blush came to her cheeks.

He realized then that in his haste to escape his captors he had failed to realize he was only garbed in a hospital robe, and that did not fair well when he dove through the window. So now he was exposed to the elements and indeed quite visible to the naked eye as well. He bowed in apology and did his best to conceal himself. After a short walk he spotted some clothes out to dry on a line. It was his good luck that a pair of simple cloth pants of a size that would fit him hung there. He grabbed the pants and threw them on, it would certainly draw less attention to not be running around in the nude.

Now that he was clothed his mind could return to other issues, such as figuring out where he was and what was going on. He went to set off in another direction when a sudden grumbling of his stomach drew his attention. It would only make sense that his appetite had not suffered after being in a hospital unconscious. He needed to find food and fast. Now that he looked around he realized that he had been on the outskirts of a small town when he first ran away. Ahead of him a series of farms and homesteads stretched out. He placed a hand on his stomach and decided that the farms were worth a shot.

It was easy enough to make his way out of the town and closer to the farmhouses thanks in part to the rolling fields of tall grass leading away and into the rural lands. He kept the nearest road to his right so he did get too far off the beaten path and get himself lost. Shortly though the tall grass came to an abrupt halt where it was evident the property owner had felled to weeds. He looked to verify the coast was clear before sliding out as stealthily as possible and bolting to the side of the big red building before him.

Just as he prepared to make his way toward the crops of vegetables nearby he heard a loud humming coming from down the road. He glanced to the horizon and could see a large cloud of dust steadily gaining on their position. Something about it was ominous and he could tell by the sudden lack of singing birds and creatures that the rest of the world felt it too. He slid himself along the side of the building to get a better glimpse of what the commotion was all about. It seemed that the cloud was caused by a couple of vehicles rolling down the road with thuggish looking men hanging out of windows and grasping on to hoods.

The cars slowed to a halt in front of the nearest home before a rather poisonous looking fellow climbed out and stood before the front door. A creak emanated from within and the screen swung open to reveal an old man. Although it was evident he was well past his prime there was a certain force to his pride as he stood alone before the dangerous looking group.

“Well looky what we have here boys! I was sure he would have run off by now. It looks like the old man has more spine to him than I assumed. Too bad we are gonna have to break it soon.”

The group behind him joined in laughter. Together it sounded like a hiss. There was something seriously off about these fellows. Still the man stood strong before the group.

“I told you hoodlums before, there’s nothing for your kind here and I’ve got nothing else to give you. You do what you need to do.”

Even from behind the barn the shock on the criminals face was evident. The old man raised his chin in defiance but the stranger could tell that there was fear in his eyes. He had overcome his fear and was doing the only thing he could now. The younger man spit on the ground before the innocent farmer.

“Well, you son of a…I guess we’re just going to have to teach you a lesson, aren’t we boys?”

The leader of the gang sneered and turned toward his buddies to get in a good laugh with the lot of them. There was a change in his posture though, a telegraph of what was to happen next. He spun quickly with his right hand cocked back, aiming to cheap shot the old man across the face. The blow never landed though.

Before he could even think the stranger was in action. It was as if suddenly the fog had lifted on his mind and everything was clear once more. For that moment he knew what he had to do. Everything seemed like slow motion around him. Faster than should have been possible he darted out and stood before the man as a protector. The punch landed squarely in his open palm as his fingers closed over the strike. His left arm was fully extended and his eyes burrowed into the aggressor as the realization of shock overtook him.

“What the hell? Who are you? How did you….?” He stammered.

“We do not harm the innocent.” The stranger muttered.

The gangster sought to free his hand to no avail.

“Hey! Lemme go! Lemme go! Boys! Get him!”

Everything was a blur. The gang rushed him, easily twenty men. Once again everything slowed. He kicked out at the first sending him back into the man behind him into a heap. He used their leader as a weapon against them, never letting go of his fist no matter how hard he struggled. It couldn’t have lasted thirty seconds but the fight was ended swiftly. Soon he stood just as before, holding the fist of the leader as the gang groaned in pain around them.

“What are you!?” He shouted, pupils dialating in fear.

“I am death incarnate.” He whispered.

His hand moved of its own accord. He broke the man’s arm in three places, reversed his knees an doubled him over with a gut strike.

“And your time has come.”

His right hand shot up and grasped the man’s trachea. He practically oozed fear and then as the strangers right hand gripped tighter and pulled it was over. Blood pooled on the ground as the rest of the gang quickly high tailed it away.

The farmer stepped forward cautiously and laid a hand on the newcomer’s shoulder. He flinched for a moment but then his clarity again faded as quickly as it had come.

“What’s your name boy?” the man asked.

As if drawn up out of the deep the response came to his libs unbidden.

“I am Azrael….”
