The Saiyan Inferno
Yunzabit Heights had quite the reputation for itself. Many called it the ‘End of the Earth’ and for good reason too. Its climate is brutal; consisting of freezing cold air and heavy gusts of wind. The clouds in the sky above are so thick that no sunshine has ever shone on the lands below, leaving the ground barren and frozen. Its chalky cliffs were worn down and covered in ice, closer to glaciers than actual mounds of dirt. Though it is accessible from any direction, none have seen the center of it. Many expeditions have been formed to try and reach its middle, intent on disproving its morbid title. But the closer you move towards its center, the harsher the climate becomes. Yunzabit Heights does not like being explored and it will drive any away that attempt so.

Hence; End of the Earth.

Monica knew the stories of her childhood about the Heights true center. That two powerful gods were battling one another and had been for centuries. Or that an Ice Serpent had crashed onto the planet from Pefu and was sleeping in its nest. Some people went as far as to say that the remaining Red Ribbon Army had taken refuge here and was hiding behind a weather controlling device. No one truly knew the answer and she wasn’t really that interested in it anyways.

No, her eyes were set for the Dragonball.

The cave where she had taken shelter did very little against the harshness of the wind. She was bent low behind a boulder, her jacket wrapped tightly around her body and a scarf pulled up to her chin. And still the jagged pins of the cold tore right through her, causing her body to shake. Trained or not, there was no denying the force of this natural phenomenon superseded determination. She glanced down at the small electronic heater she had brought along, the metal coils burning a hard red. But even as they did so, she couldn’t testify to any warmth coming to her body. How long had she been sitting here? It felt like hours though it could have very well been minutes. She shifted her gaze to the cave’s entrance. Where the hell is Apio?

After their astounding victory in the dance competition at Penguin Village, Jurok had contacted them about another dragonball in the Heights. While the saiyan was excited over the idea of getting another treasure, the assassin had been quiet. She could still remember him, grinning and pumping his arms in the air. The uncomfortableness of his suit had been all but forgotten in his moment of victory. She stood there, her chest still heaving from the intense dance they had just performed. And something was stirring in her that she had never felt before.

What the hell was it?

Apio was a brash young saiyan. Though he had absorbed some of his older brother’s beliefs and mannerisms, he was still very much his own man. He had his own opinions and fought for his own reasons. They had never really gotten along before; he didn’t trust her and she didn’t like his attitude. They constantly bickered and disagreed on most motives during missions. But when they had entered that gala, playing the role of husband and wife, there had been something that wiped away all the drama. He played regular townsperson real well and she found herself genuinely laughing at his jokes and teases. And when they danced…he clearly was combat proficient and it carried over to his flow. He worked with her, moving where he needed and keeping the beat despite having no training. It was amazing…it was flattering.

What the hell is wrong with her? She’s a professionally trained assassin. She has led many men astray in attempt to complete her mission without as much as a regard for their livelihood. But now, after Chishan had taken her in, her world was crumbling apart around her. And she wasn’t sure if it made her upset or excited.

As if he was summoned by her thoughts, the saiyan warrior appeared with a screech near the entrance of the cavern. And as he completely materialized, he fell to one knee. She was moving before she even knew it, sliding to his side and throwing his arm over her shoulder so she could lift him.

“Apio, what the hell happened?” She asked, managing to get him to his feet.

“This damn cold. It tore right through my body. I was only a mile off from the dragonball.” He muttered, his voice low. As they turned, she caught the reflection of something over his shoulders. It didn’t take her long to realize that it was ice. She helped him down behind the boulder and set him right next to the heater.

“Can you feel anything? Can you feel my hands?” She asked, squeezing his fingers.

He shook his head softly. “Whole body is frozen. I can barely see.” His head drooped a little. He was nodding off.

“Hey! Stay with me. Lean close to the heater, it will warm you up.” She gave his face a smack, causing his eyes to snap open. Good. She lowered him to the ground and turned the heater to face his body. He was shivering now. And his eyes continued to droop.

“Son of a bitch…” She grumbled looking around for an answer. There were no trees in Yunzabit Heights; the closest batch was several miles away. If she left, who knows what would happen to the saiyan? If the space heater wasn’t enough…

She had no choice. She quickly dropped to the ground behind him, sliding her body up against his as compact as she could get. Both of her arms wrapped around his arms and pulled him tight to her chest. Her right hand turned over so her palm was facing upwards and a bright pink ball of energy popped into existence in between her fingers. She held it tightly and brought it close to his chest. His arms and legs would take care of themselves; he needed to keep his chest warm.

She could hear his breathing now; he was asleep. No doubt his expenditure of energy and freezing of his blood had worn him down to exhaustion. Despite the ice on his shoulders, she could feel the rest of his body was still holding a bit of warmth. And ironically it helped settle her own shivers.

But her face was written in the look of a woman at war with herself. This was the only way to ensure that they both stayed warm without the use of a fire. But at the same time, this was a closeness to another person she had never experienced before. Sure, she had been taught that cuddling together with another is a viable way to survive harsh, freezing weather. But she had been through many training sessions that required her to do just that. But this was an entirely different experience. There were no conflicting feelings inside of her from her other partners, no slight trepidation in having to wrap her arms around him and pull him close. There was no blush in her cheeks when she realized that she was cuddling with him.

She shook it off the best she could and focused on keeping her energy orb alive and heated. She was forcing a lot of energy into it so that its warmth could spread to the saiyan. She lay there for a couple minutes, quietly concentrating. But her body was losing its energy and her vision began to blur. No! She would keep this energy going for good. She could see it…she could see the ice breaking and melting on his shoulders…

And then darkness took her.

She had a dreamless sleep. And when she finally came to, there was no telling how long she had been out. The sound of the howling wind was the first thing she heard, though it could simply be her waking up. As she groggily opened her eyes, she found herself alone on the ground of the cave. Panic set in almost immediately; where was Apio? Something crackled in the air and her lower body felt much warmer than the rest. That was when she realized that the once-dark cave was illuminated. She rolled over onto her back and looked down. A fire was burning feet away from her, practically the size of a bonfire.

And standing beside it, stripped down to briefs, was Apio.

She nearly leapt out of her own clothes when she saw the state he was in. He was alive, thank the Kais. And as she slowly rose to sit up, he looked over to her.

“It’s about time. You feel a bit warmer?”

She didn’t answer him. “Why the hell are you naked?!” She couldn’t help it, it was the only question that was burning in her mind at the time.

He glanced down at himself and then back to her. “My clothes were frozen. Like literally; it felt like peeling off a metal box when I took them off. But they are hanging on the boulder behind the fire, hopefully losing some of their saturation.”

Well that answered that question. She had to pry her eyes away from his toned chest to look at his eyes. “Where did you find the wood for this? There are no trees outside.”

He chuckled. “Funny story about that. I came to a while ago, though I still felt like crap. As I struggled to my feet, I saw something sticking out of the cave wall over there.” He said, pointing to the now open hole in the stone. “At first I thought it was some kind of stone but when I touched it, I was amazed to find it was frozen roots. Apparently there had been trees here at least at some point. I tore them out of the wall and used my ki to melt the ice from them, at least enough so they could burn. And then I made us a campfire so we could warm up.”

She couldn’t help but shake her head. “That is some luck if I’ve ever heard it. I thought we were going to freeze to death.”

He looked at the fire and nodded. “I know.” And then, as he looked back at her, a smug grin had beset his face. “Is that why you felt the need to spoon me?”

Any worry that she had had for him flushed away and her usual, combative self emerged. “Spooned you?! I was doing that to save your life! You should be thanking me, not making fun of me because I put myself at risk to save you!” Furious, she jerked her head to the side and looked away from him.

He was laughing now. “Oh come on. Will you learn to take a joke? I know what you were doing. I’m not an idiot.”

“So you say.” She grumbled.

He rolled his eyes and moved over to her, bending down to look at her. “Listen, Monica. Thank you. If you hadn’t stepped in when you did…well, I don’t know what would have happened. But I have no doubt you saved my life back there and I owe you for that.”

Oh Kais. There it was again. That emotion. The sight of seeing how compassionate he could be, how caring he could come off; it had brought it back. She looked up at him. “No problem.” She said softly.

He grinned. “Get in close so you can warm up then. We need to get warm enough to get that dragonball! Maybe we can spoon in celebration afterwards.”

God damn it
