The Avatar of War
Continued Over From...
Already by Raphael's words and rage, the warrior of Laerys could tell that he’d said something wrong. That wasn’t his first time doing something like that. For some reason he had a habit of saying the wrong things at the wrong time. Regardless he felt like he needed to say what he did. The last he tried to, someone or rather something showed up and ruined his chances.

Just then as Roland mentioned something about their patrons and how they were feeling about Zaun, the warrior realized something. Ever since he left Zaun for his final time, Brontos never mentioned their home world. It seemed as if the God of War only cared about improving Walid’s abilities. Was it to brag about his Avatar or was he secretly preparing the warrior for reclaiming Zaun, or was it something else entirely.

“Now that you mention it,” the wanderer muttered under his breath while looking up at the ceiling, “Brontos seems only interested in improving me, maybe for a War?” Suddenly as he looked straight ahead to notice that one of his comrade was pinned down. When he looked to see who it was, he was shocked. Why was Kami’s caretaker doing something like that?

Either way, seeing an ally of Walid’s made the pink haired warrior very angry. It was as if a switch had flipped on once his mind processed their situation. His pupils vanished away, almost like the normal Walid had gone to sleep or something and a brand new one took his place. The Berserker managed to jump into action by attacking the genie. The blonde haired Zaunite didn’t have to tell Walid to get ready, he was already prepared.

Moments later after Lysses had spoken, the Avatar of War shot forth like a speeding bullet for the black genie that he once knew. Normally while he was in his battle mode, nothing else mattered. His other side was slowly causing him to resist the urge to attack wildly. Still, Walid moved one of his arms up, aiming for Mr. Popo’s throat and pinned him on the ground. He wanted answered, and didn’t want to wait much longer.

“Who the hell are you,” the warrior bellowed out, wanting to show whoever it was that was causing the genie to attack them, “You’re not Mr. Popo.” Walid knew the black genie, and despite Kami’s caretaker always having a blank expression on his face, he never would harm a fly. The only thing he could think of was some sort of possession.

“You have until the count of five, and then I’ll unleash hell,” the warrior added, “One…. Two…. Three…” Right before he could even count the next number, he felt a strange wind send shivers down his spine. He couldn’t explain what it was, but went back to his count. He wanted to show the creature he meant business.

“F-four and f-five…” the genie said before the warrior could and then stared at Walid. Before the warrior could make his move, he felt as a strange invisible force first brushed against him. After that it grew stronger and managed to send him flying. His flight managed to come to an end the moment his back slammed right into the wall. He didn’t know who was controlling the friendly, yet strange genie, but it wasn’t Mr. Popo.

Normally in a situation like that the warrior could call upon his patron for help, but decided not to. He wanted to see if he was capable of a feat without Brontos’s help so that he could show the God of War that he was ready. His goal wasn’t to try and stop Mr. Popo; it was to see if he could have a clam head while doing so. He wanted to help the genie, not kill him.

Raphael pushed his plate forward. He just simply had no more room left in his stomach. The meal was beyond words. Everything was cooked to perfection. Seeing as Roland was the Avatar of Wisdom, it shouldn’t have been that big of a surprise that he could cook flawlessly, but it was just that, a surprise. Raphael didn’t know much of the powers that Talos bestowed to his Avatar.

The tone shifted from laughter and hunger, to a deadpan serious. The Avatar of Wisdom began to confront Walid’s statement of Zaun. Detailing the PTO’s assault against his homeland of Gram. It was Raph’s first time hearing of it. He didn’t know that Gram had been attacked at all. Then again he was from the innermost city within Antilles. Had he not been granted the knowledge from Gygesse he probably wouldn’t even know of Gram’s existence to begin with. He was quite the shelter child with little knowledge on anything that wasn’t Antillesian.

His head nodded with each point that Roland pinned. A single point halted Raphael’s mind, “So far, Talos has been quiet on the subject. Has any of your patron gods made any mention of a unified effort to reclaim Zaun?” The question stunned the others at it did himself. A moment of dead silence eclipsed the room.

One by one the Avatars began to plead their Avatar’s case. Lysses with Argus held silent. Walid and Brontos were focused on self improvement. “I was actually sent from Antilles to gather you guys. It was Gygesse and my sole mission to get back to Zaun, and cleanse it of the war. To be honest, Neither me nor Gygesse even knew of this ‘PTO’ until today. The only problems that we thought Zaun had were lack of resources within Antilles’ surrounding countries, Your countries.

That was the original intent of the war. Phage and Laerys came as one and invaded with weaponry that the likes of Zaun had never seen. It was the precursor to the planet being consumed by the tides of battle. I can feel each life being taken as it happens. The pain at first cut like a knife, but now I’ve become accustomed to it. That’s something that should never happen. E...each life should end by nature’s hand.
” Tears began rolling down the Antillesian’s face. Just speaking of the burden that he had to bear with Gygess… was just as painful as it sounded and equally dark. Being numbed to the point where a life being taken no longer affects you… Makes your life just as cold.

Fading out the darkness of the conversation. A swift dark figure imposed on the meeting. He rushed into Roland. Slamming him into the wall with a single hand. His sickly voice claiming the avatar’s soul. This being’s life force was tainted with darkness. Raphael could only see a blackened veil within him.

Something is covering his life’s energy. I’ve never seen such a thing before!” He yelled out kicking his chair back, “What is this magic?

Walid had been flung into the wall, and Raphael couldn’t budge from the table. What could they possibly do against a foe of this strength? He couldn’t even fight this force off his body for the time being. He could only watch onward.

Mr. Popo grimaced as he felt the thing in his body lash out at the Zaunites with telekinetic force. The first one, a grizzled warrior named Roland hurled across the room. Some how the abomination controlling him had taken control of his nearly endless magical power. He knew that if he didn't’ get control soon, it would absorb more of his power and most likely lead to the entire earth exploding, if not the entire solar system.

The other Zaunites in the room started to jump to their feet, clearly dismayed by the sudden intrusion on their nice dinner. He could see empty plates and a cask of ale on the table. It made him feel a pang of sadness. He had intruded on their lives and conversation. Something he could never forgive himself for, even if he was possessed.

The pink-haired Zaunite rose to challenge him. Popo remembered him as Walid, and that he had an huge appetite. In fact, all the Zaunites did, as after they left the Room of Spirit and Time, most of the stores were spent. Especially the stock of honey buns.

“You have until the count of five, and then I’ll unleash hell,” Walid said. “One…. Two…. Three.”

“F-four and f-five,” the creature said in its Not-Popo raspy voice, and then lashed out with more telekinetic power.

The white haired one, who Mr. Popo didn’t recognize, said something in regards to the abomination attached to him. “Something is covering his life’s energy. I’ve never seen such a thing before!” He yelled out kicking his chair back, “What is this magic?”

The abomination sent out telekinetic force to hold the white-haired Zaunite in place. But, its power was starting to wane, having to exert so much of it on so many targets. The Zaunites were no slouches, that was for sure, each one strong enough to break planets and crush entire civilizations--if not for their benevolent.

“H-Help me! This thing has taken my b-b-b-ody,” Mr. Popo said, but before he could say more the abomination silenced him.

There were two potential targets left, a little red haired girl with weak ki, and a blonde haired fighter. Mr. Popo remembered him as Lysses.

“Ra-gghag!” it said, all before grabbing Lysses by the face and checking him through the wall. They flew out into the swirling snow. Popo could hear the grunts of effort as Lysses tried to break away from his grip, trying to target his elbow joint. But, even the force of his blows weren’t enough to bend the joint. Popo also felt his telekinetic force on the other release as he focused poor Lysses.

The abomination slammed Lysses through a half dozen trees, feet crunching in the snow, before releasing him into the air. He moved at lightning speed, in Lysses eyes no doubt it would have seemed as though he vanished completely. When he appeared again he sent out an earth shattering palm strike, and could of swore he heard Lysses arm crack under the power of it.

Popo’s mouth then opened, a huge ball of ki swelled in the center of his mouth. It then erupted outwards, engulfing Lysses whole and lighting up the whole forest in its glow.

***

Roland hit the ground with a thud and let out a long ragged exhale. He clamored to his feet, looking to the giant hole in the side of the lodge. His eye twitched with frustration. He had just got the place livable again, and the damn genie had to go and ruin it.

“Raphael is right, there is a strange magic corrupting his body. I can feel it. Talos has seen magic like this before. It’s ancient and powerful. We have to break the spell if we want to save the genie. We just need to slow him down long enough. Me and Raphael can combine our powers, the powers of Wisdom and Nature to shatter the mystical bonds. Walid, it’s up to you and Lysses to hold him off for a moment.”

Roland shot a glance to Ruby who looked wide eyed with fear and concern. “What are you doing standing there still? Run!”

His daughter muttered something under her breath and ran down the hall, out of the dining room.

He turned to Raphael. “I’m going to create a magic circle. Can you draw mana from the forest around us to accelerate the spell? We need mana of the purest nature for this to work. I think the earth creatures will suffice.”

Roland jumped through the hole in the wall, reaching to his hip. He drew out the Son of Swords, a dagger that he kept as a side arm. The dagger was curved and covered in strange runes. The snow had fallen fast, leaving a nice blanket on the ground. He slid into his knees and started to carve the circle in the dirt, carefully, as Talos projected into his mind the patterns.

His wave sailed over the Genie's shoulder, blasting through the window and blowing out the frame. Lysses nearly hissed in response to the miss, but said nothing, choosing to take careful aim as Walid stepped forward. The Avatar of War had lowered his shoulder in order to follow the trail of the blast, fists flying and arms moving in an effort to suppress the little black genie. It was the strangest situation he'd ever seen. Popo, himself, was a friendly fellow. Lysses couldn't think of the last time that he'd raised a hand in anger; in fact, until that very moment, he'd been under the impression that such a thing was impossible.

When Popo overpowered Walid, Lysses stepped around the table, fist still encompassed by free-flowing tendrils of his power. He didn't see the Genie's sudden movement coming, but attempted to react anyway, stepping backwards and inadvertently helping the Genie's cause. Popo's fingers fought to close around the edges of the Berserker's face as his feet shoved forward, forcing Lysses through the wall and into the snowy forest outside. The blonde grunted audibly, groaning and objecting with fervent growls.

The world outside of Popo's grip blurred and shivered as Lysses' hands went to work at battering the genie's arm. He struck again and again, swinging the hammer against the anvil with a violent intensity. The genie's very body felt different than usual. His flabby arms had been covered in muscle by the white material, making the sinew feel like katchin. Steel, at least, broke; katchin did not. The pain was real and visceral, but striking seemed to alleviate it by taking Lysses' attention away from the fingers closed around his face.

His back crashed through tree after tree, each one driving fleets of splinters into and leaving an armada of scarlet scratches across his shoulders and back. Then, suddenly, he found himself released. His body floated backward over the snow, limbs flowing out from his body as if carried by a macabre current; he had been losing consciousness hardly a moment prior. He blinked his eyes, trying to rid his head of the pain that had surrounded it on all sides-- but before he could regain himself, Popo was once again upon him.

The genie vanished as Lysses opened his eyes, forcing the blonde to throw his hands up in a rough defense. Popo's palm collided with Lysses' forearm, cracking the bone and forcing a painful pop from the joint. The Phagian resisted the urge to scream, choosing instead to respond in as simple an alternative as he could.

"Gah-- fuck!"

He flew backwards, feet burying themselves into the snow and kicking up a trail of thin powder as he powerslided across the ground. He glanced down at his left arm, which seemed to have been partially broken by the palm thrust, before turning his attention back to the somehow deadly genie that was once again taking aim in his direction. Electricity gathered around the corners of his lips; Lysses' eyes widened. He knew damn well what was coming, but there was no way he was going to stop in in time.

His non-shattered arm rose in his defense, wreathed in a barrier of glistening lightning. Popo's blast exploded across the mountainside, swallowing the Berserker whole and melting the snow that had lingered beneath his feet. That time, he screamed; the sound echoed through the chilly mountain air and threatened to overpower the sound of roaring ki.

He emerged from the blast wave only as it faded, having been knocked off of his feet; energy burns covered his flesh, having ripped off the upper half of his shirt in order to leave him exposed. It took him a moment to regain his breath, but as the heat in the air dispersed, Lysses managed to prop himself up on his back elbow. Having been knocked flat on his ass by a chubby genie was not his prouded moment, but at the same time, it wasn't the most shameful.

"Argus, why the hell does this have to happen to me?" he muttered, struggling to get to his feet.

With a feral roar and clenched fists, Lysses unleashed a hellish scream into the air. Immediately, the world cracked and crackled, startled by the reemergence of his golden aura. He was not going to just let himself get beaten up by some pudgy black dude that cleaned carpets all day. He loved Popo like a creepy uncle, but that was no excuse. The thing that covered his skin was definitively not Popo.

"Alright then, come at me now! Let's see what you've got!"

As the warrior laid there, pressed against the wall, he heard it. He heard the cries that Kami’s caretaker let out and caused his brain to flicker back on like a button had been pushed. There was only one thing that truly enraged the Avatar of War, and that was seeing an ally suffering. He considered the black genie as one of his comrades and so he was going to do everything in his power to help him, even if it takes his life.

He then watched as his rival was slammed through a wall, and saw as Mr. Popo went along with him. Normally Walid wouldn’t have cared much about the Berserker. Usually he wanted to see just what bounds Lysses had so that when he challenged him in battle, it would be interesting. Unlike those other times though, he was furious and wanted to make the monster pay. He just hoped that in the process of things, he won’t lose who he was.

“Concentration Walid, that’s the key--”

As soon as the pink haired warrior’s patron spoke, he completely tuned him out. He didn’t want Brontos’s help; he wanted to see if he had what it took himself. The God of War wasn’t pleased by the situations, but knew that Walid had his reasons. Suddenly Walid overheard Roland coming up with a plan and told him to hold the genie off for Raphael and him. That caused Walid to grin and crack his knuckles.

“With pleasure,” the warrior muttered and then rushed out of the gaping wall like a speeding bullet. He didn’t know where the genie was, nor did he know where his rival was. He did however notice a few trees that fell and caused him to realize that Lysses would be at the end of its path. Or at least, that’s what the Avatar of War hoped for. After a while he noticed Lysses’s yell and then knew where his comrade was.

It didn’t take him very long to reach the Berserker but something felt off to him. The genie was nowhere in sight, where did he go? Regardless he decided to take his time to see if his rival was injured and to possibly come up with a plan to distract Mr. Popo from the others. Right as the Avatar of War took one step, he felt as something smacked right into his cheek.

“What the hell…” he looked to see what it was, it was the black genie and he was staring right at the pink haired warrior. His facial expression scared the pink haired warrior; it was so blank that it looked as if the genie was looking deep into his soul. He didn’t want to lose his focus on his mission though, and to do that, he swung his leg around to strike the menace down.

Before it could land, the genie managed to maneuver out of Walid’s way and then vanished without a trace. The Avatar of War looked around to see if he could spot the genie. Before he knew it, Mr. Popo was right in front of him and extended his arm out. In a few short moments, the genie pressed his open palm towards the warrior’s chest and then Walid felt heat.

Before he knew it, Mr. Popo shot out a beam and caused the Avatar of War to sail through the air. Walid didn’t like that, but he had a plan. First he brought his arms behind his back and started to charge up a beam. Without uttering the words he usually said for the Kamehameha wave, he brought his arms forward to propel himself to head straight back to the black genie. He then extended out his arm, aiming for a powerful strike at Kami’s caretaker.

“You’ll have to do better than that against me!” the warrior shouted. He thought that the genie would move out of the way, but he was prepared it if did. He started to charge something in his hand and once Mr. Popo moved out of the way, he would attack with it. No one disgraces the Avatars of Zaun.

The massive genie threw Lysses about like a ragdoll. Almost completely destroying the lodge in just mere seconds. It was quite the display of power and restraint. The real Popo must be in there and fighting it from within, or else the Avatars would have been erased from existance. This single genie alone held the power of the entire planet of Zaun. It was miraculous to say the least and slightly terrifying.

I’m going to create a magic circle. Can you draw mana from the forest around us to accelerate the spell? We need mana of the purest nature for this to work. I think the earth creatures will suffice.” Roland’s idea was a bold one. Raphael had never tried tapping into the mana of anything. His Goddess hadn’t told nor shown him of the that ability if even it existed, but he would need to try here and now.

Gygesse take me” His eyes glazed over with pure energy. Gygesse’s consciousness overtook his mind. The Goddess had assumed full control.

Ambar nosta na H tuule lyaa tuure.” Her voice rang out through the woods. The very forestry lighting a bright green. Every living creature and plant’s life force began to flow through to the lodge. A calming stream of green energy began to swarm the avatar. Motioning her hands around as if to dance within the energy. Molding and shaping it into a fluorescent orb. “As you requested Roland, here is your mana.

This is more than enough for the task at hand, but do be careful. There’s no way of truly gauging the power of this. The Earthen forrest is rather weak compared to those of Antilles, in terms of life force, but in Beauty… Even Antilles pales in comparison. Truly a beautiful place you’ve found.
” The goddess drifted off topic and into a rant of the aesthetically pleasing terrain. She was always one to speak of and appreciate life in all forms.

Her focus moved on from Roland’s magic circle over to the fight between Lysses and this mystical genie. The Phagian had been tossed about and beaten down like a red headed stepchild. Gygesse could feel his body being pushed to the very limits of pain and dismay. The genie as pointed out before was immensely powerful. “Roland, I’m going to help them. Please hurry."

Stepping out into the wilderness, Gygesse raised her hands. Sending a wave of energy across the land. The forestry that had been destroyed magically healed. Everything just as pristine as it was to begin with. “Lysses fall back to me! You’ve sustained too much damage, there’s no way you can continue on like this!” Her silken voice cried out for the berserker’s retreat. Almost like a mother calling in her children.

Mr. Popo felt bad for these valiant warriors, the way they were throwing everything at him. Slowly but surely, the abomination was wriggling its way deeper into the fabric of his being. Slowly but surely, he could feel himself fading. It was a subtle thing, like moving down a tunnel, deeper into the shadows. The light grew smaller by the moment.

Something crashed into his stomach. A fist and the strength of the attacker carried him backwards into the air. The force the impact sent a resounding shockwave through the forest, swaying the pines, displacing the black clouds above and revealing the night’s stars. The pink haired warrior that delivered it kept going, past him, only turn and fire a large beam.

The abomination twisted Popo’s body around, without moving the legs. If he had a spine it would have snapped in two, but his body wasn’t made of such weakness as flesh. Torso facing backwards, legs facing forward he swiped at the beam. It bent, careening away where it exploded into the forest, sending a giant fireball and splinters of wood into the air.

Please run, Popo wanted to say, but he could no longer speak. The abomination had control over him now.

The light became a pinpoint. He couldn’t see or hear out of his own eyes.

***

”Perfect Raphael. Thank you. With this energy we should be able to cleanse his body from that corruption,” Roland said and stood. The carving on the ground was intricate, swooping circles and arcs, inlaid with runes. With the pure mana of nature within it, the grooves began to glow a bright white.

”Now to get him over here,” Roland said and scratched his chin.

He motioned towards Rahael. ”I’m going to get his attention. You might want to stand back.”

Roland balled his fists and drew out the power of Talos. It started as thin golden light shrouding his figure, but within moments it grew to a billowing aura, the flame like tendrils lapping at the sky like a bon fire. He just need to make his mana big enough to get Popo’s attention. He saw a large explosion, Walid had fired a beam that Popo diverted.

”Hrah!”

Roland’s mana expanded rapidly as he called upon Talos’s power, fueling his transformation. Both of his irises turned a bright crimson. The ground shook, but he controlled the rapid expanding of his mana, to not let it destroy the magic circle beneath his feet.

Called by his expanding energy, the Popo-Abomination whipped its twisted body around. Blank circular eyes gazed down at Roland, expressionless, but at the same time predatory. Despite Roland’s ever-growing power, he felt crushed by Popo’s stare. The power within it was almost enough to bring him to his knees. The sounds of the battle and everything around him faded away, as if he were being crushed.

This mana, its so powerful. Even at my full strength I can barely stand to look into his eyes. I’ve heard tales of warriors ending fights with only a glance, but I never believed it to be true. Such power!

Popo rocketed towards him, a sonic boom resounding through the sky. Paralyzed, Roland fought with each passing millisecond to get control of himself. He managed to drop to his knees and set his hands upon the magic circle. Now, he needed to only say the words.

The forest below Popo split with his flight, carving a huge trench. Trees were upturned, snow and dirt flinged into the air in every direction. Roland felt the ground shift, the crack moving fast, towards him and the circle. If it disrupted the lines of power… then…

”Secret Magic: Purify!”

Talos’s magic ignited, the white light shooting up in a broad pillar towards the heavens. Roland turned, throwing up his arm to shield himself from just how blinding it was. The Popo-Abomination flew straight into it and a moment later Roland heard a blood curdling screech, as if a thousand demons were torn to shreds all at once. The pillar shook and vibrated, sending out white bolts of electrical energy, like wicked pale fingers across the dark sky.

The pillar dissipated a moment later and Roland heard a thud in front of him. He stood and stumbled back next to Raphael. Mr. Popo lay on the ground in front of his large trench, where the circle had been drawn, wisps of smoke coming off of his black body. Roland no longer saw the veins of corruption wriggling on his form.

Then he caught a flicker of motion through the trees, a white mass of tentacles slithering away. Exhausted from his energy drain, Roland could barely move and slumped.

”Hurry Raphael--the corruption, it went into the trees!”

Lysses managed to scramble back up the mountainside just in time to see Walid and Popo engaged in battle. Scratches littered his exposed arms and rips had been made in the fabric of his shirt, likely from his own bout with the diminutive djinn. He had been slammed through a number of trees and forced to the ground with hardly a batted eye; somehow, Popo had come into an awful lot of power. It was likely from the strange, almost liquid concrete-esque substance that now seemed to cover his entire body. It served as both his sword and shield, allowing him to utilize a foreign and offensive power while protecting him from the inside out.

That was something that Lysses had noted before, though. He had first picked up on it when the Genie's arm refused to break under the force of Lysses' fists. Walid's, it seemed, had no better luck. The pink haired warrior managed to land a deafeningly powerful blow against the genie's abdomen, prompting the world around the collision to explode. Shockwaves shook the snow from the pines and forced Lysses' teeth to shake in his mouth, but the blonde continued forward despite the pain. His boots sloshed uphill through the snow as Popo slapped Walid's blast aside.

It went spiraling off course, exploding somewhere deep in the forest and creating a blossom of fire and smoke that soon took over the skies. The Phagian grimaced in response, using what remained of his energy to take to the skies in an effort to meet back up with Walid as Popo sped off. He came grinding to a halt in the air beside his comrade, shrouded in a veil of gold and purple energy. It crackled and hummed, begging to be unleashed on the foe that had already wounded him.

"You noticed it too, right?" he grunted, still breathing heavily.

"The white stuff all over him. I don't know what it is, but I know I haven't seen it before. When I tried to punch him to get him off of me, it was hard enough to damn near break my fingers. It felt like my whole body was going to cave in before his elbow even thought about budging."

He used his proper, uninjured arm to scratch at the back of his head. He wasn't sure how to proceed; on the one hand, Popo was immensely powerful. On the other, he was now racing directly for their comrades inside the lodge. He could vaguely see the puffing smoke coming from the chimney in the distance, in the same direction that Popo had taken off for.

Lysses frowned, grinding his teeth together and hesitantly floating forward. He signaled for Walid to follow in his wake with a subtle flick of the wrist as he burst off across the sky, breaking through the tree-line in hot pursuit of their foe as he neared the lodge. At the very least, he would be able to get a small grasp of the situation by approaching. He would learn nothing by staying back and observing, like a child waiting patiently for his mother.

By the time Lysses arrived on the scene, the corruption that had once been inside of Popo seemed to have fled, making haste for the treeline he'd just emerged from. Instead of tracking it, he descended toward the downed Genie, seeking to aid him in any way he could. Roland seemed to be shouting for Raphael to take action, which, to Lysses, meant that he was free to examine the genie.

From what he could tell, Roland had used some kind of spell on the substance controlling Popo's body, expelling it forcefully. Lysses made sure to roll Popo over onto his back, so that he could breathe properly, before checking his body for any exterior damage. For all he knew, that white substance was going to leave a fresh bundle of scars.

"Popo, what happened...?" he whispered, voice low.

His assault was a success, but when he turned to fire his next attack in case the black genie fled, he was disappointed to see that it was knocked away like it was nothing. The warrior never thought that Mr. Popo was powerful, but didn’t think that way after that. The trees that were destroyed could be replaced, but the Avatar of war didn’t want to imagine what the fiend could do to a crowded city. He didn’t know how, but they needed to put him out before that happened.

The pink haired warrior watched as his rival took to the air, mostly likely to regroup. Walid decided to do the same was speechless to what his comrade had to say. What white stuff… He knew that he probably should have paid attention to see if there was anything out of the ordinary, but it was kind of hard to do that while something was trying to beat you up.

“Wait we can’t lose him!” the warrior said as he noticed the genie gone from the scene, “We’re supposed to distract him for the gang.” Thankfully the Berserker went after their foe and decided to do the same. A trail of snow shot into the air as he went in pursuit for Mr. Popo. It was one thing if just his comrades were there, but there was also a child in the lodge. He didn’t even want to think about what would happen if they didn’t get there in time.

Finally the duo reached the lodge, but they weren’t greeted with what the pink haired warrior thought they would be. Mr. Popo was on the ground and it seemed as if whatever was controlling him had vanished away. Well this sucks, I was hoping for a brawl. As much as he wanted to finish things, he was happy that his friends were safe. He didn’t know what he would do without others being around him anymore.

“It’s… It’s… not finished…” the Avatar of War heard the genie utter and was completely confused. Was the monstrosity still alive? He looked around, scanned the place for anything out of the ordinary but couldn’t. The more he thought about it, he thought that it was just Mr. Popo being unstable from what had just happened. Walid knew that he’d too be traumatized by something like that.

“Don’t worry about it now, you’re okay,” the warrior said to hopefully comfort the black genie, “Sorry I had to ruff you up... or try to at least.” It was true, he only managed to get in maybe a couple shots in, his other attempts went unharmed thanks to whatever was controlling the genie. Just then, the warrior noticed as he heard something slithering in the snow behind them. He couldn’t pinpoint the exact source, but his ears were sure that something was moving.

“The creature… it’s still alive…” the black genie said, and Walid knew that he was right. He could only assume that whatever it was, was seeking for another vessel. The pink haired warrior wasn’t going to allow something like that to happen. He calmly turned around with a focused look on his face, and stood still, waiting for whatever it was to show itself.

When he would catch so much as a whiff of the creature, he would fire nonstop. Whatever it was didn’t deserve to live. Too many innocent people would suffer if it did. They needed to exterminate it before it got stronger or horrible things would happen, much like their home planet.

Watching on as Roland’s energy consumed his being for a brief moment, Raphael stepped back. Accepting everything that was happening. The forest was being terraformed by Roland’s touch. Forestry turned about as snow and dirt were tossed like rain through the sky. Tectonic shifts swayed the group for a brief second. The power of this Earth’s mana was incredibly. Toss that in with Roland’s combined power and you get this… It was absolutely magnificent.

Secret Magic: Purify!” Roland commanded the circle. The Avatar of Talos released a beam of white energy into the sky. It quickly consumed the corrupted Mr. Popo. Shaking and erupting the pillar dispersed. The massive genie slammed into the earth. He had landed at just the tip of the crater Roland had created. He was a lucky one. Had his fall landed him in that he would surely be done for.

His life force is faltering” Raphael stared into Popo’s energy. Yes the corruption had been dispersed from his being, but the damage he had sustained did not. Roland put a little too much oomph into his magic. It was deeply concerning, but without doubting the Avatar of Wisdom, Raph turned his attention to the forest.

The corruption had begun to spread like a plague across the beautiful woodland. Warping and twisting tree after tree as it sucked away the very essence of life. It was sickening watching on as each and every bit of foliage wilted away in just mere seconds. Gygess, I need your full power for this. I’m not quite sure what will come of it, but please lend it to me. The avatar begged for his patron’s true power and blessing.

He had never experienced her purest form of power. His body had never been in peak condition to channel the pure energy of Life and Growth. Should Gygesse accept the plea, his body could disperse and leave Gygesse as nothing more than a floating entity of energy. Being that she had no true physical form, or rather hadn’t had one in years. She would have to return to Zaun to truly reform and claim another Avatar. That alone was completely out of the question and almost not worth the risk… but some things are worth risking in this world.

A terrifying thought just crossed your mind, please don’t think so negatively. I trust that you can do this, I believe you can handle it. Just don’t over do it. I pray that you know and understand the limits of your own body here on Earth.

The Goddess’ words rang clear through his mind as his eyes were consumed with darkened green energy. His body becoming a beacon of pure life force. Almost phasing his physical form completely as he began to ascend above the forestry. The corruption had began to settle in amidst the snow filled land, and this Avatar state had to stop it.

Raphael began to gesture his hands in a push / pull motion. Bending and forcing the very strains of life. Twisting and turning them. The trees slowly started to respond to the Avatar’s movements. Bending back and forth whilst regaining their health. The land that Roland had trenched pulled together and reformed just as it was. The beautiful foilage regained its darkened green coloring. A peaceful tranquility spell made for expelling darkness from the land.

Wave upon wave of blackened energy began to flow towards Raphael’s fingertips. Every once of darkness that had consumed Popo was now nothing more than a hardened sphere. Void like cries emanating from it. It was sickening and depressing to hold. Just feeling such darkness tainted the purity of the Avatar’s heart. “Absolution!” A combined voice of Gygesse and Raphael roared across the land. Dispersing the sphere and cleansing the landscape of darkness.

It was over. The abyssal magic that was used had been eradicated. A sigh of released dropped from the Avatar’s lips as his eyes returned to normal. Gygesse’s energy pulled back and locked away for another day as he descended from the sky.

Everything was perfectly healthy once more. The forest as beautiful as the day the Zaunites arrived, and Popo’s health beginning to stabilize. His spell affected more than just plants. It had a minimal effect on all living organisms within the casting range. “Popo was it? This magic, I’ve never seen anything like it across my or my patron’s life. Please if you remember anything, tell us where it came from.” Raphael begged as he took a knee by the injured genie.

Lysses watched, paralyzed, as the corruption began to spread to the trees. It ate away at the wood and aged it, leaving everything it touched blackened and decrepit. He could literally feel the sinister energy pouring off of it as it infected the world around it, tearing away at the life of the forest and leaving naught but death behind. In the wake of cataclysmic devastation, only the devastation remained. On the ground, Popo stirred, warning the group that the threat had not yet abated. Lysses, quite obviously, did not need to be told that.

He stood as Raphael stepped forward, eyeing the silver haired Avatar with a mixture of apprehension and determination. If any of them could do away with the substance, it was Raphael. With Gygess at his side, he had mastery over all Life in Nature's domain. He could feel it and sense it and seek it out wherever it hid away. In the distance, the liquid corruption ran through the trees, struggling to outrun the wrath of the Goddess.

A wave of life shot forward over the soil, reviving the deadened wood and wrinkled shrubbery. Like wildfire, it spread over the forest and raced toward the corruption, obviously seeking to purify it. Raphael's hands continued to weave forward and backward, but he seemed to have things under control.

"It... I was cleaning Kami-sama's room," began the chubby little genie, from his place at Walid's side. He was clearly still terrified, but he did a decent enough job of putting on a brave front for the rest of his comrades. It was likely that he hadn't been expecting to see them in the way he had; coincidentally, Lysses hadn't been expecting to see him at all. He'd last seen Popo while preparing to enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for the first time. The genie had been, perhaps understandably, busy with something when he'd emerged and hadn't been there. "It was waiting for me... K-kami was s-sick and I was just trying to help..."

Lysses put a hand on the little black genie's shoulder, nodding his head.

"It's perfectly alright, Popo. We won't hold this against you," he said.

Popo shook his head and turned to look at Raphael, hands gripping the sides of his arms and rubbing enthusiastically in an attempt to keep himself warm. It was clear, to Lysses at least, that Genies weren't supposed to be in cold weather.

"I d-d-don't know what it w-was, but it... it s-sounded like s-some kind of v-virus," he explained. "It... c-came from in-inside the loo-lookout..."

Lysses crossed his arms over his chest, and glanced toward his comrades. Roland, who seemed content with the threat having been stopped, nodded his head.

"I'm going to go check on Ruby," he explained. "You guys figure out if he knows anything. We'll talk about it together in a few minutes."

Lysses watched him trek through the snow, breaking the trench line from the circle he'd created and heading back towards the Lodge. It had only just occurred to him that Ruby had went off to hide. He figured, maybe, that he should have gone to check on her as well... but that could wait. She had become a strong kid and could probably fend for herself.

"So, what do we do now? Should we take him back to the Lookout?"

"W-warming up w-would be nice a-as well," interjected Popo.

When the abomination slowly ate away at the trees, Walid stood frozen with fear. It was like he could sense the vile creature with his heart and it wasn’t pleasant. Suddenly he watched as Raphael began to take care of it and he couldn’t help but be impressed with his comrade. The Avatar of War couldn’t feel his legs; his comrade however was able to withstand it. He wasn’t sure why, but he was thankful that someone was able to move.

If not, he wasn’t sure that the creature would be eliminated. They couldn’t allow something like that to roam the planet, not with millions of innocent lives at risk. The pink haired warrior watched in awe as Raphael condensed the abomination into sphere and while that happened, Walid couldn’t bear to see his ally holding such a thing. He knew that if he was the one to do it, he would have probably fainted.

The sphere then broke and with it, the existence of the abomination was no more. They however, could not rest up just yet. There was still the matter of Mr. Popo to take care of. The pink haired Zaunite figured that the black genie was exhausted from what just happened. He wasn’t in any shape to fly back to the Lookout in such a condition. That was when Walid decided to step in, he would make sure that Kami’s assistant was safe.

“Just hop on my back,” the warrior ducked down to allow the genie to climb onto him, “We’ll get you back to Kami, you need to rest.” The Avatar of War himself thought that he needed one as well after that fight, but he always made his allies a priority before himself. After all, where would he be without them?

“Al---Alright if you insist,” Mr. Popo said as he started to climb onto Walid’s back, “D--Don’t forget to take a break if you need to.” With that, the pink haired warrior hovered above the ground a few feet into the air and waited for the others before going.

“I think Roland should be fine here now that the creature is gone,” he said, “But if anyone wants to stay, go ahead, I can always handle this solo if need be.” The Avatar of War didn’t want to make everyone feel guilty into going. He just assumed that everyone wanted to rest after what happened. As soon as he was finished, the Zaunite would relax as well, but only after their mission was over with.

On that note, the warrior ascended into the air and began to head towards the Lookout. While he did so, he couldn’t stop thinking about the abomination they destroyed. He wondered what would happen if they would encounter a foe with that kind of dark energy again. The Avatar of War couldn’t move an inch. If something like that were to happen again, how could his allies trust him to help?

“Don’t worry Walid. If something like that happens, I can always help you out.”
“You’re like a son to me, I won’t let anything or anyone harm you without a fight.”

Pushing up from his knee, Raphael scratched his head. Popo spoke of it being some sort of virus, yet it was comprised of pure evil and darkness. Just in a physical form you could feel and hear the agony that was held within. Everything about it screamed bad. It was just odd that he had found something like cleaning out someone’s storage room.

Hmm, if he truly found this within the look out. Then we should probably make that our next move. Everything about this seems off. I mean just look at this way, If I nor Roland knew the origins of that magic then no one on this planet or let alone any other would know what the hell it is.” He began to rant on waving his hands about in confusion.

Even through Gygesse’s knowledge base, I can’t pull anything about it. I’ve never felt so in the, dare I say it, when it comes to this stuff. At least not sense I’ve had Gygesse. I can’t even begin to imagine how Roland feel about it. He’s the freakin Avatar of Wisdom for crying out loud.” A sense of dumbfoundedness consumed his thoughts. It was like his entire mental index had been cleared over something so small, or large… He just didn’t know anymore.

Yea yea, I’ll stay here and rest for a moment. Think I’m just gonna relax and meditate for a while. At least try to cleanse my mind of this nonsense.” The avatar tossed his hands in the air and brought them to a crossed rest at the crown of his head. He started to walk back towards the severely damage lodge. Resting quickly became his primary objective. Getting all this black magic off his mind whilst Gygesse took care of the research. She could at least try to analyze the essence of it.

He did happen to grab a small sample of it as he held it. It was more than a bold strategy, but hopefully it would pay off in the end. And Gygesse find the loose end that he could not. Roland would be the ideal person to get the sample too, but it was one purely from memory. He could just transmit that to the Avatar.

That would surely makes things way too easy. Having such a power to share things such as memories between others. Would make every broken situation like this 100x easier, but easy was just something that the Zaunites didn’t quite know to begin with. Nothing had ever been given to them without a fight. This would be no different.

Umm, Raph. You should probably aid Walid. If there does seem to be more of that magic, er virus, at this lookout he mentioned. We would be the only ones able to despell it. As much faith as I have in him to complete any task given, Walid just isn’t the right person to be faced with that single task.

Ugh, I guess you’re right. Right as his feet made contact with the wooden porch, Gygesse’s words of reasoning were released. Aside from being the Goddes of Nature and Growth, she was a God of Timing. Always chiming in at the perfect moment to keep him from resting or taking a break in any form, and this… this one moment took the cake. He didn’t want to do any more work. All he wanted was rest and to mull over the situation.

Shaking his doubt from his mind, he turned and jumped towards the sky. “Walid slow down, man! Lemme catch up!” He called out as he peaked through the tree tops. Walid was much faster than he was when it came to flight, but moving along Earth’s crust… Raphael was a million times faster. His primary mode of travel was moving along through the very strain of life. Fusing his body with the Earth and instantly getting where he needed to be.

They arrived at Kami's Palace just short of an hour later. Roland, predictably, had stayed behind in order to tend to his daughter and start working on repairing the lodge. So far, that made two times in total that Lysses had inadvertently led to the destruction of at least one wall. Hopefully, the breach Popo had made would be a little bit easier to repair than the gaping hole in the foundations he'd made while fighting Elric. Remembering the incident left him with a pang of guilt hanging heavy in his gut, but as his boots touched the marble stonework, he made no comment of it. It wasn't his job to worry about the past.

His job was to figure out what had infected Popo.

They had managed to get him to elaborate a little bit on the thing that had been found beneath the lookout while on their way there. In the distant past, the Earth had been host to a strange virus from another world. The virus had ravaged the land and nearly left the world bereft of life by the time Kami had managed to seal it in a weakly corked bottle and lock it away in the depths of the palace. Unfortunately, it seemed as though Popo had managed to break the bottle while doing some cleaning.

A portion of the infection had attached itself to the little genie, marking him as its host in an attempt to stay alive. Meanwhile, the rest of it had slithered away, content to stew in another part of the palace while Popo sought out other, equally fitting hosts.

"Alright, it looks like Kami is still asleep," whispered Lysses, as he straightened and took a look at the palace's exterior. The sky above was dark, but the golden dome in the center of the lookout continued to shine on with an ancient elegance, leaving them to bask in its glow while they approached the front door. "Popo, what's the safest location on the lookout?"

The genie, who had hopped down from Walid's back, spoke slowly and carefully.

"I-- well, it's probably the Hyperbolic Time Chamber..."

Lysses shot him a backwards glance.

"I mean, where's the safest place that you can go and come back out once we're done?"

Popo twiddled his thumbs, staying in step with the group while he considered his options. The truth was, he could go in and out of the chamber as many times as he liked; his people, as he would later explain, were uniquely immune to the limitations of the chamber.

"I can come and go as I please, Lysses... If one of you would be so kind as to get me to the door, I can close it and come back out again in a month. By then, at least two hours should have passed, surely."

"Alright then, I'll trust that. One of us will get you there safely," said Lysses.

"Before we do, we need to know where the virus is hiding. What places should we be looking?"

"According to Kami, the original form the virus took was best kept in cold, dark places... if there's anywhere like that on the lookout, it would be somewhere down below, known as the Pendulum Room... it's said that the room can take the form of any harsh environment the user wishes to live through, but that it will always induce some form of trial. There's no telling what you'll be required to do in order to come out unharmed..."

It was a good that Raphael decided to join them on their travel to Kami’s Lookout. As far as the Avatar of War knew, his comrade had never been there. The pink haired warrior learned a lot of things from training with the Guardian of Earth. Some things the he didn’t want to share with others because they were personal. There was also the matter of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Inside, you could get a year worth of training in a day.

The moment the black genie climbed down from Walid’s back, was also the moment the warrior fell to the ground. He knew that his comrades would probably call him lazy, but it was tiring tapping into his War Mode. It drains him of a lot of energy. Add that with the damage that Mr. Popo did to his body and you get a worn out Avatar of War. Regardless he got back to his feet quickly after; he wanted to see if the planet was indeed safe.

He then heard where the virus could be and was immediately focused again. He cracked his knuckles and had a smirk on his face to hide how he truly felt. The genie mentioned that their destination would be in a cold, dark place. The pink haired Zaunite didn’t want to enter such a place with a vile creature in the midst. It would however, provide him with practice for future threats.

“I’ll go to the Pendulum Room to take care of whatever the hell that thing is,” the warrior said as he walked off. Living at the Lookout gave him some advantage; he knew where most rooms were. Even though he was a regular guest though, that’s not to say that he doesn’t get lost. One day, he had to shout for someone to find him. Walid then finally found the door to the room he was searching for.

He had to admit, it took him a while to open the door. He was afraid and didn’t know what to expect within that room. The pink haired warrior mustered up the strength finally and entered inside. Once he was there, he found himself in a room filled with darkness. There was no light, and he could practically see his breath every time he breathed. Still, he decided to remain cool so that he could defeat whatever it was they were looking for.

“Hey Virus, if you’re here,” he said and then shouted, “GET YOUR BUTT OUT HERE NOW SO I CAN DESTROY YOU!” He of course knew that it wouldn’t be as simple as that, but he figured he’d give it a shot nonetheless. The pink haired Zaunite then started to walk around and as he did, he could hear his steps echoing around the place. It was starting to spook him, but he remained strong. He wanted his comrades to trust him when he was needed.

After a while, he decided to look back and see if anyone followed him until he realized he couldn’t see a thing. Well this is just great. He then wondered if he should spark his energy to illuminate the room, but was scared as to what he would find.

Raphael’s feet touched down on the enormous circular structure. It was quite the beautiful place, but oddly enough it felt like it was too big for what it held. The giant half moon size for just a small building in the middle seemed like a bit much for someone to call home. Then again it was the home of the Guardian of Earth, so it had to offer some advantage as a lookout.

Shifting his focus and posture over to Walid and Popo, Raphael made way. He helped the genie to his feet after Walid had released him. “I can sense the virus, I’ll deal with Popo. You two should be able to handle what ever challenge you meet in this Pendulum Room he spoke of. If what I sense is right, then the virus could be dealt with without Gygesse’s magic.” Raphael spoke out in hopes to motivate his comrades.

This black magic virus was one to not fool with. It was of unearthly origins and there was truly no telling what it was capable of, but they didn’t need to hear that. The avatar didn’t lie to them. They did have a chance of cleansing the lookout without Gygesse, but it would be a rather difficult task. One that they would truly have to strive forward for.

Best of luck to you.” He spoke once more as the trio parted ways. Raphael started off towards the Time Chamber in the center of isle. It felt like miles to get to the arch ways of the chamber.

This is the place, right?” He inquired.

Yes, this is the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. I’m rather surprised that you’ve never heard of it.” The genie replied in a winded tone. He was still fighting to recover from Roland’s cleansing magic. Which was more than understandable. He had took in a massive amount of Talos’ power. Probably more than enough to kill an earthling.

You sure this will help you?” Raphael questioned the genie once more.

More than you could imagine. One day out here is a year within there.” Popo answered the final question as he pushed the chamber doors open. He faded into the pure white abyss and the doors locked with a chime. A clock began to tick and hour glass began to drop. The genie was now on the chamber’s clock.

Lysses waited until Raphael had disappeared from sight before he set off after Walid, walking at a brisk pace. The pink haired fighter had always been relatively quick to act, but he hadn't wasted any time in heading down to the Pendulum Room. The Pendulum Room was at the bottom most point of Kami's Lookout, and was, itself, fairly massive. The room, itself, was at least a mile long and a half mile wide. Once the intended user stepped onto a pad in the center of the room, it would begin to change, transporting the user to their trial and leaving them to their fate until they either died inside or their trial was completed.

By the time Lysses caught up to Walid, he had just begun to enter the blackness that the Pendulum Room had become. Typically, the room was supposed to be well lit and bright. Instead, it was dark and secluded. A thick, piercing blackness enveloped the both of them as they moved further inward, forced to track each other by the sound of their own footsteps. Lysses didn't know how the creature had managed to invoke such a powerful darkness, but he didn't care for it.

"I'm going to try and light this place up a little," he whispered.

Lysses extended his hand and took a deep breath, summoning a wreath of golden flame that crackled to life along the length of his wrist and fingertips. It did very little to pierce the dark veil that surrounded them, but it granted the pair enough room to move. The uneven flooring beneath their feet had been revealed, at least. The Pendulum Room, unlike the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, was not one built for any sort of comfort. While the Hyperbolic Time Chamber was dangerous and difficult to deal with, it was also secluded.

Nobody in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber had to worry about a ghoul sneaking up on them from behind.

Lysses turned his head to look at Walid as they walked, examining the Avatar's face for any sign of emotion or revelation. It didn't look like Walid had heard anything either. He returned his attention to the path ahead.

"If we can find the center of the room, we can trap it in a trial, but that might be dangerous. Do you think we should just bomb the place and see if we can light it up a little bit? Maybe flush it out? One of us could fire off a few blasts while the other one takes out the virus host?"

He figured his Starburst Barrage could do the trick, if it came down to it. The Starburst Barrage was a simple technique in essence, but one that required a fair amount of mana and energy. Step one was creating a massive shockwave, step two was firing off a series of powerful flares that were meant to converge upon an enemy. Of course, in their case, the flares would just be firing up at the ceiling and casting light down upon them.

Another set of footsteps alerted the Avatar of War and cause him to worry once more. He soon however stopped once he heard his rival speak. The pink haired warrior was getting ready to attack and was fully prepared to strike his comrade. Had the Berserker not said anything, he would probably have gotten a barrage of punches to his face. Putting trivial things aside, the warrior watched as Lysses lit the place up with his energy.

He then scanned the place with his eyes to see if he could spot anything out of the ordinary. Unfortunately for him though, he could hardly see what was in front of him. It was still too dark to see and that caused the warrior’s patience to get thinner. He wanted to quickly get their mission over with so that he could rest, he was tired and he could hardly feel his legs from all the wasted energy and pain.

A plan was then formed and honestly when Walid heard it, he wondered if that was a smart thing to try. While one smoked it out, the other had to try and capture it. What would happen if the one trying to make a grab for the virus were to be caught in said assault? Regardless though, he decided to try it. After all they didn’t really have any other options.

“Set fire to the place,” he said as he dropped down into a stance, “And I’ll rush for it.” Still even though he went along with the plan, he wondered if he should have. He was already worn out; he wasn’t sure just how much longer he could last if he were to get blasted by his rival. Despite all of his feelings, he wanted to hurry things along so he simply gritted his teeth and waited for whatever the Berserker would unleash.

“Don’t worry Walid, you’re warrior, you can handle just about any obstacle.”
Even with words of encouragement from his patron, the Avatar of War was still a little uneasy. Just as a precaution though, he brought out his axe that was straddled on his hip. If any harm were to come to him from the Berserker’s attack, Walid was ready to slash it away like grass. Hopefully he would be able to strike down the virus as well he thought. If not, there was always plan B. He readied a wave of fire in his throat just in case the monstrosity would flee.

Walid paused to consider the proposition for a long moment, but eventually seemed to decide that it was the best option for them to take. Lysses nodded solemnly and slowly began to levitate, kicking off from the ground so that he could get some proper leverage. He didn't want to risk letting the virus creep up on him while he was taking care of business by lighting the room, and he also wanted to be able to fire off a good salvo at the creature if he managed to catch it sneaking up on Walid. Most importantly, he reasoned, light was best cast from on high. He would be able to illuminate more of the room by unleashing his energy barrage from a hundred feet up in the air than he would from the ground.

Energy swirled and massed around him, wrapping itself around his flesh and igniting his entire body with a glorious, golden fire. He brought his knees in toward his chest and flexed his arms, forcing a rail of shivering lightning to ran rampant over his spine. At his core, energy continued to dance and shimmer, slowly building outward from within him in order to encompass as much of the darkness as possible.

It ate away at the air around him, snapping and crackling as it devoured the blackness. Within the sphere of lethal power, Lysses had begun to sweat; he was putting more energy into the Starburst Barrage than he typically did. He had to be sure to light up enough of the room that Walid could find the creature before it escaped. The only way out would have been to go back the way they'd come, or to take possession over one of them. With the energy surrounding Lysses, he severely doubted that the virus would be able to worm its way in without getting erased. That left only Walid exposed.

The blonde's fingertips flexed in place, and the sphere of energy wavered in response. He was coming up to his maximum capacity; his skin had been replaced by thick sheets of ki, and from the depths of his eyes, only purple flares remained. He had come to form a supernova in the center of the room, shining brightly like a star over all. Below, on the ground, the virus slithered back toward the darkness, temporarily illuminated by the light. It sought to flee before Walid could catch it.

Lysses groaned with effort as he watched the creature scamper off into the dark. He had to do something to keep the area alight while Walid hunted it down, otherwise he risked letting them both be overcome.

The energy that had surrounded him suddenly expanded with a sickening crack as Lysses thrust his arms and legs out. He screamed with a furious power, unleashing an army of flares from within the massive sphere of energy, which went streaking through the room and extending the length of his light. It struggled to touch the corners of the room, illuminating every nook and cranny in an effort to help the Phagian's comrade. Hopefully, Walid would be able to hunt it down before the light show gave out.

"Walid! You've got to catch it!" he screamed, body rigid as the supernova's light began to wane.

The Avatar of War
Blasts after blasts left from his comrade and slowly began to brighten up the place. All while that was taking place, the Avatar of War couldn’t help but stare at the light. Being trapped a dark, confined place reminded him too much of his past. The warrior never wanted to go back to those days and his rival’s barrage helped to make sure that he wouldn’t be cornered by darkness. The room was also much larger than he thought it was.

Before he could continue on with his thoughts, he remembered that he had a task to take care of. He needed to sniff out the virus before it had a chance to flee. Unfortunately for the vile creature, it was out of luck against Walid. He had the sense of a thousand beasts when it came to hunting. No one was safe hiding from him; he would be on them in a matter of moments without them even knowing it.

Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed it. He saw as an odd creature began to slither away from where he was standing. Quickly as fast as the warrior could, he kicked off the ground and darted towards the virus. Energy began to rain down as well, but thankfully the Zaunite was prepared. He batted each one away with his axe as he started to close the gap between him and the abomination. Walid was too determined to allow it to flee.

Finally he reached within range of it and when he did, the Avatar of War went in for his assault. Fire after fire expelled from his mouth and closed off every escape route the virus could take. With it boxed in, Walid dashed in and swung his axe. After just one, he could already tell that it wasn’t going to be easy. The creature tried to slither around his arm as he swung to which the Zaunite responded with a quick punch to what he assumed to be its face.

“You’ll have to do better than that!” he proclaimed as he backed away from the creature, “Try this one for size!” He first cupped his hands and placed them behind his back, then started to charge up a bright blue wave of energy. After only a few seconds it was ready and the Avatar brought his arms forward for the assault. He let out a grunt as he pushed his energy out and watched as his attack began to head for the virus. Already though he knew that wouldn’t be enough.

The warrior disappeared from sight for a moment, and then reappeared above the creature. In each hand he charged up more energy and fired to make sure that the creature couldn’t slide from either side. With it boxed in yet again, he made his move. He launched his leg for the virus multiple times to explode the abomination into a million pieces. Thankfully for him, each one landed and when they did, a bright explosion engulfed both Walid and the virus.

A smoldering pink haired Zaunite finally stumbled from the flames and said with a grin on his face, “That’ll teach it to mess with me!” Before he had another chance to speak, he collapsed onto the ground. His fatigue finally kicked in and left him with no feeling in his body. The creature was no more, but was the Avatar of War fine?

Lysses slowly floated back down to the ground when he saw that Walid had dealt with the virus beast, his shoulders slumped and a trail of gold falling haphazardly from them. He felt like an angel that'd burned off all of his wings, forced to the ground and left to despair in the wake of cataclysmic devastation. By the time his boots touched the ground, Walid had already fallen to the floor. It didn't take much more time for Lysses to sink to a single knee. He could understand how the wandering warfighter had become so fatigued; he had, after all, taken the brunt of Popo's assault. He quickly fell from the knee to laying down on his arms and elbows, taken by the fatigue.

"I think it's over..." he said, slowly rolling onto his back and staring up into the darkness.

For the first time in months, he felt weak. He felt as though he had been weighed, measured, and found wanting. The muscles in his arms had all but given out, and he could feel the creeping feeling of cramps sneaking up from the depths of his calves. Even had Walid stood up and ordered him to march, Lysses didn't think that he'd be able to do it. He'd only lasted a fraction longer than Walid had because he'd been beaten up a little bit less to begin with.

The silence felt overwhelming. It forced him to dwell on the thoughts he didn't want to face, but he didn't seem to be capable of thinking about anything else. He had thought himself strong for the longest time. He had beaten back legions of steel soldiers and metal men, conquered the wilds of a foreign world and decimated an entire army. He had been the champion of the arena hardly two years ago, and now... now, he found himself laying flat on his back, failing to fight for a world that wasn't even his.

Worst of all, he was without his Patron.

Beyond the feeling of desperate inferiority and beyond the mark of the lost lingered the feeling of abandonment. It wasn't that Argus was gone. He could feel Argus, dwelling within him and imbuing him with an otherworldly power so rarely possessed. He could feel his Patron's warmth... but he could hear no words. Any requests were met with silence, granting him no respite or reassurance. Often, Argus had told him that he lacked the proper instinct; Argus told him that he thought too much, or held back too often.

His fingers balled into fists while he contemplated the silence. He could hear Walid breathing off to the side, clearly alive, but fairly tired. He hadn't heard any motion in what'd felt like an eternity. The blonde exhaled, turning his head in the direction the breathing was coming from. He had to say something.

"We weren't strong enough for this," he breathed.

"Some chubby little genie had me by the throat, and I couldn't even make his arm move. I was punching at it for years, but it just wouldn't break. The joint wouldn't bend."

Lysses rolled onto his front, propping himself up on his arms but letting his forehead touch the ground. He was still in disbelief; he had dismantled entire worlds and destroyed machinations of the darkest variety. He was a hero and a warrior, and he found himself lacking. How could he save their home world without being able to save someone else's? Earth was smaller than Zaun. The people were weaker and so were their opponents.

"We need to train harder," he suggested.

The Avatar of War
Being left on the ground, exhausted caused the pink haired warrior to really think about something. What he wanted more than anything in the world was to make sure that his comrades were safe. As much as he wanted that, he was also aware that his body had limits. His sudden realization wouldn’t change how he felt or the way he acted, but it was depressing to know that one day he wouldn’t be able to help them.

He also thought about trying to get them stronger so that he wouldn’t need to, but he knew that it wouldn’t solve anything. The Avatar of War knew that no matter what, he would still try and push himself until he was drained of all his energy. He guessed that he would need to try and control himself, kind of what Brontos wanted him to do with keeping his power under his control. Walid was aware that it would take some time to get used to that, but he was willing to get it a try.

Finally after a while lying on the ground, the warrior mustered up enough energy to get back up. Still even though he could feel his legs, it didn’t change the fact that they were still on fire. Suddenly he overheard his comrade mentioning something. It was as if he read his mind about everyone getting stronger. But time is the problem. The Avatar of War knew that people didn’t get powerful over night, they needed time.

“Wait a minute,” he muttered as an idea popped into his head, “The Hyperbolic Time Chamber! We can enter inside and train!” Walid didn’t know why he didn’t think of his idea sooner; a year long of training was the perfect way for his comrades and him to become stronger. The only problem he thought though was Raphael. It would be his first time and when the pink haired Zaunite entered it a couple months ago, he remembered it being brutal.

“Alright let’s go and see how the others are doing,” he said, placing his thoughts aside and realizing that he left his other comrade inside the chamber with Kami’s assistant. Quickly, but slowly Walid began walking out of the room they were in and started heading for the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. He also hoped that his rival was hot on his trail because he wanted to hurry up and see if the Avatar of Life and Growth was fine.

Being inside of the chamber must have been natural for the black genie. Raphael on the other hand, was probably not used to it and could be pinned down by the gravity. The Avatar of War’s protective instincts suddenly kicked in and gave him the strength to walk around. His walk changed into a brisk walk until he was practically running for the chamber. He went around a few stairs as well as descending down a couple to reach the place where his friend was.

Don’t worry I’m on my way. He also thought about the abomination that controlled the black genie and started to wonder if they had really vanquished it. What if they had left their comrade trapped with the creature? So many questions ran through the Zaunite’s head, but he wouldn’t know until he got there.

Lysses waited until Walid stood up to stand up himself, determined to get as much rest as possible. He would have rather just stayed there on the ground, but it probably wouldn't have been the most productive idea. Now that they had managed to destroy the virus, the time had come to go check on Raphael. It took all of the strength in his legs to raise himself up off of the ground, but with a little bit of effort, he managed to clamber to his feet and start off after Walid. Admittedly, he had already thought of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber as an option for their training method, but he wasn't going to rain on the other man's parade.

In fact, he'd been the one to bring it up earlier, probably planting the seed of thought in Walid's head. Thankfully, they'd had a similar enough thought process that they'd have probably both arrived at the same conclusion regardless. They had both gone in separately last time, but if they both went in together... They would probably come out even stronger than they'd ever imagined. At the very least, that was the goal. Under their current conditions, it would not be possible to gain a large amount of strength without an awful lot of effort.

It took them at least ten minutes to get to the top of the palace, their travel time delayed by the fatigue that had taken hold of their bones. It was both interesting and irritating how much harder a little bit of fatigue made every task.

By the time they arrived at the topmost floor, Roland seemed to be making his own landing. Ruby landed just behind him, her feet bouncing off of the marble and carrying her forward so that she was in perfect step with her father. Lysses gave them a brief nod and stood in wait for them as Walid went to go check on Raphael, knowing that the Warfighter would be enough. Considering the fact that they'd wiped out the abomination below, Lysses sincerely doubted that there'd be any trouble.

"Any trouble, kid?" asked Roland.

Lysses let his left hand rest on his hip and ruffled Ruby's hair with the other, causing her to blush slightly the second he looked away from her. He could have explained the entire incident in pretty vivid detail, but he didn't think that it was worth it.

"Nah, we're all good here. We took out the virus-thing when we showed up, but we're probably going to stay here for the night," he explained. "We're wiped out completely. Walid and I needed at least twenty minutes each to get off of our feet after we blew all of our energy."

Roland nodded and hefted a bag from over his shoulder. It looked like a typical black duffel bag, but as Lysses took it and rifled through it, he discovered that it held a few fresh changes of clothes. He sighed in relief.

"Figured you guys would say that, so I went ahead and brought some spare clothes from the lodge. Not all of it's gonna fit, but it shouldn't be much of a problem for you."

Lysses would have hugged him if he had the energy. Instead, he patted the other man on the back and threw the bag's strap over his shoulder. He was glad to have something else to change into. Walid would probably be equally thrilled. At least, that was what Lysses figured. Both of their clothes had been ruined by snow and wooden shrapnel.

"I'll take this to Walid and give him an update. We're going to be entering the Hyperbolic Time Chamber soon, so that we can train harder before we go to Kelioux."

Roland's brow furrowed slightly at Lysses' response, but he didn't say anything. It was possible that he'd misheard what Lysses was saying earlier about his Patron, anyway. Acting without proper knowledge would have been foolhardy.

"If you say so. I'll go ahead and take Ruby downstairs. I'm sure she doesn't really want to sleep in the lodge tonight, and some good instruction from a revitalized Popo might do her some good in the morning."

They nodded, and then walked in silence to the front door of the palace.

Nothing more needed to be said.

The Avatar of War
The warrior continued his journey to see if his comrade was safe from harm’s way. While he did so, he noticed that Roland had made his appearance at Kami’s Lookout. Normally he would have checked to see how his daughter and him were okay as well, but he knew that his rival was enough for that task. He first needed to see how Raphael was doing. For all he knew, that could be a battle going on.

Finally Walid reached the door to the chamber and opened it up. Once he was inside, he shielded his eyes from the white abyss attempting to blind him. He thought that he was used to the chamber’s appearance, but he guessed he was wrong. It didn’t matter though; he could fight without his eyes if he had to. Thankfully he didn’t hear any explosions nor did he hear the sounds of agony. It was peaceful even for him.

He then noticed the black genie sitting down and a sign of relief flew straight down his spine. It would appear that his worries were for nothing… or at least he thought so. Suddenly the gravity of the chamber got to him and pinned him onto the ground. Mr. Popo, who was in the process of having tea, saw that and quickly rushed to the Avatar of War’s aid. Walid was nice enough to help him get back to Kami; he thought the least he could do was help out the Zaunite.

“Walid,” he said as he reached the fallen warrior, “Are you okay? What of the Virus?” No matter how hard Kami’s assistant tried, a response wouldn’t come out. That was when he decided to help the warrior up and take him out of the room. He thought the Hyperbolic Time Chamber was no place for the injured. Before he could though, words began to swim out of the Avatar of War’s mouth.

“Yeah I’m fine,” he said, struggling to stand up without the genie to lean on, “As for the Virus, let’s just say that’s a different story.” The warrior was starting to fall face down on the ground again, but he stopped himself before he could. He wanted to show everyone that he wasn’t injured. He wanted to move passed his body’s natural limits so that he could take out any foe that was classified as a threat to his comrades and him.

A good rest however was needed, even he saw that. He slowly staggered to one of the beds with the black genie walking beside him in case he was needed. Walid then fell right on one of the beds and started to fade away to his dreams. As he did so, Mr. Popo watched and was amazed. He could see that the Avatar of War was a man who knew no bounds. He would stop at anything to help protect those that he loved. He just hoped that in the process, it wouldn’t get him killed as well.
