"I think I get what you meant now, 'not all things that die stay dead'. It has a number of different meanings." Elric said with a yawn as he awoke. He was speaking to, of course, Shamshire. "Oh? Which meaning did you interpret to be my true meaning of the words?" Shamshire responded in a sort of whimsical manner, as though he didn't think Elric actually understood the meaning of what he was saying. "Well, there's a double meaning to that as well. There's how you wanted me to interpret it, and how you thought I'd interpret it." Elric laughed back, sitting up and resting his back to the tree he'd taken shelter under the night before. "You thought that I'd interpret that as Yayva and I still having a chance to be friends at the least." "Oh? And why do you think I'd expect you to interpret it as that?" Shamshire said, a bit stunned. "Because you think I'm stupid." Elric said bluntly as he stood up. "How you really meant it, is that Lysses and I can still be friends. His little outburst, or Argus' rather shouldn't change things. Even if it already has, it doesn't have to stay like that." "Impressive, but if you've figured that out, why are we still here?" Shamshire said matter-of-factly. "You should have used that faerie dust by now to return to Earth, to your home, and your friends." "I need to know that it's the right time. Just because I've put it behind me doesn't mean they have. In truth, I'm not sure any of them know what actually happened. Or, in turn, if he's gotten the others to turn against-- No, that's crazy. I have to remember I was attacked by Argus, not Lysses." Elric said, shaking his head. He was still tired, for a second there he thought that Lysses was some kind of bad guy and was conspiring against him. In reality, Argus wanted to get rid of Shamshire, and thought that Shamshire was using Elric to get rid of him. Where that idea came from, it was beyond Shamshire or his avatar's knowledge. "It's unlikely that any of them know it happened at all. It's likely a touchy subject, and in times like these Lysses would unlikely tell them anything that would tarnish his position as the leader of your group." Shamshire retorted, making a lot of sense. "Right, I suppose that does make sense. I just thought they'd have to ask questions. Roland seemed understanding, but Walid had to question why their lodge was wrecked in their absence." Elric said, rubbing the back of his head. "That hot-head probably already tried to take his anger out on Lysses. Tell me boy, what is it you're really worried about? It's not the others hating you for that incident, is it?" Shamshire hummed peacefully. "I suppose I can't really lie to you, you're in my head." Elric laughed a bit, "In all honesty, I'm worried they won't like the way I've changed out here. Or that they won't understand my conviction to balance." Elric hummed, letting out a sigh that was a physical representation of the burden being lifted off his shoulders. If he was honest with Shamshire, then Shamshire could help him. If he kept it tucked away, and Shamshire tried to help anyway, it'd just be intrusive of Shamshire to try and bring it up. Their relationship was fragile, Shamshire knew that. Elric was in constant question of his past still, and what Shamshire wouldn't tell him, Elric couldn't help but be skeptical. Even if he knew something that he was protecting Elric from, Elric felt like he was strong willed enough to handle the knowledge of his past. 'In time, my child' Shamshire would say if he asked. Elric stopped bothering with it and just let the memories slowly come up when his patron decided it good timing to do so. It took a bit of the weight off when Shamshire shared with Elric, but most times it also left him wanting more. The sad part was, even in time, Elric would never know the fate of his parents or blood-relatives. Shamshire didn't know anything about them because when Elric was chosen as the successor to Shamshire's previous Avatar, baby Elric was taken away from his parents so they wouldn't be in danger, from him or anyone else who might seek to harm the 'Grim Reaper' of Zaun. If Death had a home on Earth, Elric imagined that it wouldn't take long for people to start putting bricks through his windows and smashing his mailbox. It wasn't hard to imagine the kinds of things his parents would need protected from. He understood completely, but still he wished he could know them. Or, at the very least, know about the handlers that acted in stead of his parents. The more he thought about this, the more Elric could sense Shamshire being uneasy, so he stopped. It wasn't his fault that he'd been taken away. There was no process by which Shamshire selected a new Avatar, he could only deny them the status when they became of age for him to determine if they'd be a significant enough assistant. Shamshire's last Avatar refused to have anything to do with the process. He refused to listen to Shamshire or anything he had to say. So when the boy became old enough, about age eight, Shamshire released him. Then, when Elric was chosen, things went a bit smoother for awhile. Up until the point where Elric snapped, Shamshire had high hopes for him, and even now that they are past all that, Shamshire has high hopes again. It was comforting, but still he couldn't help but wonder what it was that made him such an acceptable Avatar. 968 968 |

"I think you should know, that when we left Zaun, Tyrf had already been destroyed." Shamshire said suddenly. Elric didn't know why this was important. Roland told him the PTO had destroyed it when the assaulted Zaun. However, that might just be how he thought it happened. "Just before the PTO's invasion, there was a man. A tall dark haired man of Noble background. This was just before your arrival on Earth, the last thing you did before I took you from Zaun. Understand that I'm telling you this for a reason, so just be quiet and listen." Shamshire commanded, and Elric nodded in acceptance. ---Flashback: About a year ago on Zaun. Inside Tyrf within the territory of Gram.--- The sun beat down hot on the city. A regularly peaceful park in which the adolescent and furious avatar-in-training Elric finds much solace, is disturbed by the presence of other less peaceful passersby. The quiet babble of the running water in front of Elric as he sits, relaxing on the shore of a river. The peaceful scene was a dark contrast compared to what was to come, as Elric unknowingly sits in waiting for his world to crash down around him. "Hey, freak!" a cold voice barked from behind Elric whom, at this point, wasn't too much concerned about the voice. He tried to ignore it and just hoped the man behind it would go away. Sadly, he was opening Pandora's box by prodding further. "What are you, deaf? I know you can hear me you monster! Why don't you go back to your dungeon or wherever your from and rot away like a food little freak?" The cold barking got louder as the man moved closer to the younger Elric. For someone whom was his elder, the man was acting very childish. Elric was doing nothing to anybody to harm them, it was him being recognized as Shamshire's avatar that made the man angry, not anything Elric was doing. "Not talking eh?" The voice sneered as he grabbed Elric by the collar. Immediately, Elric grabbed the man's hand. "Leave me alone. I wasn't hurting anyone." Elric pleaded politely. The man jerked his hand away as though he'd just been touched by a hot iron. "Keep your damned hands off of me! You could kill somebody doing that!" The man insisted. "You're a bigger fool than you look if you think that's true!" Elric called in return, standing to face the man. "You're afraid of something you don't understand. My job isn't to just kill people willy-nilly like you think it is." Elric tried to explain, but the man clearly wasn't going to have any of it. "Yeah, sure it isn't. My grandfather just 'died in his sleep' when he was perfectly healthy the day before." The man scoffed, spitting on Elric's shoes. Elric looked at him with disappointment. "I had nothing to do with your grandfather's passing, or anyone else's. I'm not even a full-fledged Avatar yet. Your grandfather's time ran out, and he moved on, just accept it." Elric sighed, turning away from the man and trying to sit back down. The man however, wasn't going to be so willing to let the matter go as Elric was. "I don't think so buddy. If you can't kill me, then I'm gonna show you a thing or two for taking my grandpa away from me!" The man barked, rage in his eyes. "I didn't say I couldn't kill you. I just won't be able to with a single touch like you so idiotically assumed I could." Elric spit back, trying to warn the man before he did anything stupid. However it was too late, he should have just let them go on thinking he could kill them with a single touch, then maybe the whole thing would have blown over quickly. 641 1,609 |

"Right, well then I guess I'll have to see you try!" The dark-haired man barked as he rushed towards Elric. Elric wasn't much for a fight, knowing it'd only make him appear like more of a monster, but he couldn't just run away from this conflict. The man was blinded by rage and misplaced anger. Shamshire wasn't stepping in on the conflict because at the time Elric wasn't speaking or listening to him for one reason or another. The man lunged forwards and sent a punch towards Elric's face, which he stepped out of the way of. He wasn't about to just let the guy wail on him, even if he didn't want to hit him. "I understand your pain, but this isn't any way to honor his memory." Elric warned the man, dodging punches left and right from the man. "You think you know him so well? He'd want me to take you out!" The man barked ignorantly. "I have high doubts that your grandfather would want you to attack an innocent man whom you deemed the one responsible for his death. You're acting like a fool, and he would be ashamed of you!" Elric spat, glaring at the man who paused for a second before slamming his fist into the bridge of Elric's nose. "You don't know my pappy! You wouldn't know what he'd want!" The man barked, looking satisfied that he'd landed a hit. "No, but I'm sure he wouldn't want his grandson joining him." Elric grimaced at him. "Strike me again, and you'll get to hear it from him yourself." "You're going to talk tough? You didn't even hit me yet!" The man said arrogantly. "I haven't tried." Elric said, tossing his cloak aside. "However, I'd be persuaded to do so if you don't turn around and walk away. I might not be a full fledged avatar just yet, but I've got more than enough power to teach you a lesson." "Yeah? Well then lets see it!" The man barked, drilling his fist into Elric's face yet again with a confident grin. By now a small crowd had gathered and were all rooting for the man to 'teach the freak a lesson'. Elric had been used to this, the mob mentality of his fellow Zaun, pinning him in a corner and demanding retribution for things he did not cause. "Wrong. Choice." Elric said blandly, dark black marking coming over him and his aura flaring a dark purple. He lunged at the man and wrapped his hand around his throat so tightly that it took his life away nearly instantly. When the others saw the lifeless body drop to the grass, they began running and panicking. "What's wrong? Nobody wants to teach the freak a lesson anymore!?" Elric barked, stepping slowly towards them. Guards of the city were quickly on the scene, demanding that Elric stop immediately. "You're ruining everything, boy." Shamshire warned. Elric shrugged it off. They wanted to kill him, so he'd teach them a lesson. "They're right to fear me, but they do it for all the wrong reasons! They're afraid because they think I killed their loved ones, but they should fear that I'll pass judgement for their ignorance." Elric said, walking closer to the guards as he slapped them away. He wasn't about to just stop because someone told him they'd had enough, just as nobody stopped when he told them he had enough. The crowd that was cheering for the man to kill Elric so they'd be free from the burden of the Avatar of Death, that was who needed to pay. --Returning to present time-- "So despite my warning and the presence of the guards, you continue on. You tore the city to shreds looking for any familiar face from the crowd. You weren't satisfied until the city around you looked like it'd been bombarded. Surprisingly enough, the PTO invaded that same day, so it looked like just another casualty of their arrival. You never got banished from Zaun. I took you away to protect you from the PTO and to keep you from living with this guilt when you came to your sense. Now, I trust you've grown enough to know that what you did, while it might have been hasty, wasn't really going to change much. If it wasn't by your hand, they'd have fallen to the PTO, so you need not feel guilty." Shamshire explained with a low sigh, "In a way, you just gave them the Death that they had thought was coming. Not the one they'd be surprised by" "That doesn't make it any better. They still died. Maybe I could have stopped them..." Elric said, shaking as he stared at the ground. "Roland fought them." Shamshire reminded him, "He fought them with his whole heart and couldn't stop them. He, sorry to say, is much stronger than you were back then, and even are now. You would have been decimated by them, my boy." "Shamshire?" "Yes, boy?" "Thank you..." 835 2,444 |
