The reception at Capsule Corp HQ was abuzz with activity. Chairs had been set out in the usually empty space before the front desk, rows and rows of folding wooden chairs. Almost three-quarters of them were full, with people coming and going in droves. The receptionist behind the desk was working hard, beads of sweat regularly appearing on her brow before she wiped them away. Her black hair was tied back in a high ponytail to keep it out of her eyes, but several threads had come loose and threatened to move in front of her face. The interviews for the Earth Defence Force were the cause for the crowd of people. People from across the world were flocking to West City to join the newly expanded Force, tempted by the promise of good pay and accommodation. Many of them still had no homes, destroyed and abandoned from the war. Almost everybody was accepted and placed into one of the roles that the EDF had on offer. Everybody had a job to do, the posters had said; everybody could help in some way or another. The receptionist raised her head slowly, her eyes still on the desk in front of her. A pair of names flashed across the screen in front of her, and her eyes moved to the waiting people. “Tsukiyama Yuu, Goku Jr. and Launch,” she said, looking around at the people. Once they walked over to the desk she smiled at them, looking at the screen once more. “You’ll be in room number four, just down the hallway to your left. Mr. Harris will be waiting for you.” Once they walked away, she leaned back in her seat, wiping more sweat from her brow. She reached over the desk and turned a dial slightly further, turning down the temperature on the air conditioning. A woman walked out of the corridor to her right, smiled at the receptionist, and then left the building. Another successful candidate, it seems… As she watched the woman leave, more names flashed across her screen. She glanced at them quickly, typing a few keys with a practiced hand. “Adelaide Peters and Jared Miruzuki,” she said loudly. She picked up a nearby glass and took a sip of the water within. She smiled as she heard footsteps approach, and looked at her screen again. “Ms. Briefs will see you now, room number one please. Just down the corridor on the left” {***} Within her office, Bulma let out a sigh. She had seen a score of people already, but none had matched up to her high expectations. Sure, they were fine to perform basic tasks for the Force, but she needed people with more power, more potential, if it was to ever be the success that she had dreamed. She ran a hand through her blue hair as she looked at the paper in front of her. She wore it in a casual manner today, sitting upon her shoulders in soft curls. The next pair seemed to have some potential, at least. She knew little about the one called Adelaide, but Jared was a veteran of the war, and had personally helped to remove the threat of the Steel Legion from the blue planet. If anybody was going to match her expectations, it would be him. She sat back in her leather chair, hands placed on the desk. All she had to do now was wait for the knock on the door, and hope that the men behind it would be good enough. ---------- Words: 589 |

Edit: Totally didn't know about the one thread limit when I posted here. I hope to finish up here by late next week so I can post my trial quest. --- Goku Jr would walk through town, moving slow and keeping a low profile. There were busy bees as far as the eye could see. A good deal of them were working on road repairs while many houses were still in shambles. Why roads were so important in a world where flying craft was the norm was beyond the young hybrid. If he were in charge, he would have made sure people had a place to stay before bothering with any sort of road work. Maybe he was being a little too critical of the situation. Surely the people in charge knew what they were doing! He was on his way to the Capsule Corp HQ where some organization going by EDF was holding interviews. Goku Jr. had never been one to go out of his way to help people. Hell, he had been so young over the past violent years that he had no choice but to run away from fights. But now things were different. He had the ability to fight now, albeit at a low level all things considered. His gentle and caring nature had drawn him to ‘try out’ for the EDF and see what he could do to help the needy. It wasn’t long before the hybrid reached the HQ and saw just how many people were likewise drawn to the neat organization. Some of these people just looked homeless and just desperate for work. Others looked clearly well off but still eager to help. Perhaps it didn’t matter how much money you had if your planet’s existence was at stake. With a hearty smile, Goku Jr waited in line for several hours as the line moved ever so slowly. He didn’t mind the wait, but he felt bad for whoever was having to go through all these applicants. Perhaps next time they’d have a few more people helping out? When it was finally his turn to register, Goku Jr. found out that there was still more waiting to sit through. At this point, he was getting a little frustrated. At least there was a place to sit down and take a break. It was air conditioned in here too which was much better than the awful heat he had to stand in outside. Some time passed and eventually, it seemed as though it was his turn to speak with someone. The receptionist called his name along with two others and only recognized his name several seconds after the announcement had ended. Jumping to his feet, he would turn his head to face the receptionist and play back the message in his head. He and two others were to meet someone named Mr. Harris. The name didn’t’ ring a bell. He was expecting to meet one of the Briefs but he guessed he shouldn’t have gotten his hopes up. Surely they were rich enough to employ people to go through applicants. Well, the hybrid would put his best foot forwards as he walked down the proper hallway and walked into room number four. -507 words |

Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense. Something about the air in the building seemed off. Ty couldn’t tell if it was the temperature or the humidity or just the formality of the situation he’d found himself in, but that mysterious X Factor in the environment was throwing him off. Fidgeting in his seat, the human looked down at his notes, trying to focus. So far, Tyrome hadn’t actually been sent anyone at all. At first, he’d been glad, because the lack of interviewees had kept him from looking like the amateur businessman he was; however, that had been over an hour ago, and the pressure of the event was starting to build up in his mind. Either he wasn’t going to be sent anyone at all, and this was all some elaborate prank to make him the most useless council member of the 7, or he was about to be sent a mass influx of people and had no idea how to handle it. For the third time that day, Tyrome wondered why he’d decided to take to the forefront of this movement - Bulma had come to him directly and asked, and he still found it difficult to say no to the elegant sexiness she exuded, but he should have found some way to say no anyway. Tugging at his collars, he noticed the phone on his desk start to ring. Picking it up, he heard his secretary (because he had a secretary, to handle most of the jobs he didn’t even think about) on the other end. “Your first trio of hopefuls are coming over, Mr. Harris. I’m putting their info on your screen as we speak.” Glancing down at his desk, he saw the crystal clear glass shift into three files laying side by side, labeled ‘Son Goku Jr’, ‘Tsukiyama Yuu’, and ‘Launch’, respectively. Also, a thick, black, 4 inch blinder rose up on the three sides of the glass Tyrome wasn’t sitting at, functioning as a mini cubicle so nobody who happened to walk in could see what was on his desk without standing up and looking directly over the desk. “Thank you, Sharon,” Tyrome mumbled, trying to keep his shock from being obvious. “Call me again when one of them is ready to come in, but I’m not going to pick up. Just let them through the door after it rings a couple times, so I know they’re coming.” “Of course, sir,” she pleasantly replied. Putting the phone back down, Tyrome waited. He considered glancing over the files before they showed up, but figured it would be best if he looked at the individual files while they were actually in the office with him, so as to keep from getting confused before he even met any of them. Launch, though... the name bugged him. Why was this a one name man? Was he not human? He’d been told that the humanoid hybrids would be handled by the General - which meant this was potentially an alien from another world coming to Earth to “help out.” Ty started to click the link (because he needed to know the deal with this alien as past situations with them hadn’t led him to have any great love for foreign creatures) but finally decided to stick to his guns and kept his hands to himself. Ring... ring... ring... ri--. The signal. Goku Jr’s file, the one on the far left, began blinking with a brighter intensity than it had in the past. Touching it gently, he saw the image of a manilla envelope opening and papers flying all across the screen, and in the top left was a small portrait of him. He looks like a kid... maybe it’s an old picture, though. “Come in!” Tyrome shouted, deciding there was only one way to find out. Waiting until the youth had taken a seat in the chair (and trying to stifle his disappointment at this being a literal prepubescent child) he glanced down at the files in front of him. Unbuttoning the outer jacket to his suit, Tyrome stood up and leaned over the desk, hand outstretched. “Hey, Goku Jr, right? I’m Mr. Harris, but you can call me Ty.” He wasn’t sure how he looked doing that, but he’d seen that introductory move in enough movies to know it was probably what professionals did to greet people. Going back to his own chair, he asked, “So, I have a test that I’m going to run you by, but before we get into that, I’m just curious, man - why exactly do you want to get into the Earth Defense Force? You...” He fell silent for a second, before starting off with the elephant in the room. “Actually, scratch that. To be honest, you look too young to have even applied. I know you’re strong, but I don’t want to hire children to fight in galactic wars, and my files don’t actually tell me how old you are. Can you tell me?” Word Count: 841 Tyrome Count: 841 |

Goku Jr entered the room and looked around to see who he suspected was Mr. Harris. Trying not to make direct eye contact, the hybrid would politely tilt his head and take a seat across from the man. Many thoughts were running through the boy’s mind, but the most prominent was that he hadn’t dressed for the occasion. While he was sitting there in hipster jeans and a ripped shirt, his interviewer was rocking a suit. Goku Jr put his worries aside though, tons of people in line didn’t have suits on. How could they be expected to wear one in this scorching heat anyways? It wasn’t long before Mr. Harris addressed him and offered a hand. Goku Jr would give a nervous smile, say “yep that’s me,” and do his best to shake a hand twice the size of his own. And then came the big moment that the hybrid had been waiting for. They were going to discuss his age and his reason for wanting to join. Thankfully, he had had plenty of time to rehearse while standing in line all day. “Your fliers say anyone can help, and that’s what I intend to do. I don’t think anyone expects you to put children on the front lines, but there has to be something we can do. I’d rather work towards a cause than sit at home all day waiting for my school to get rebuilt.” He would pause and adjust himself in his seat. “Maybe that’s a little off topic. I’m 12 years old this month and I’ve been working as a bodyguard contractor for the past few years. I typically accompany clients up to a hundred miles outside the city and make sure nothing bad happens to them. I was hoping to have a similar position at your organization, but I’m open to anything really.” -309 |

Tyrome looked down at Goku Jr once again, nodding at his reply. 12 was still young, but he could certainly be involved in nonthreatening jobs. He certainly seemed chipper and ready to work. It was difficult to turn down such an energetically excited potential worker. Nodding to himself, he reached over and grabbed a sheet of paper, passing it to the... Saiyan? along with a pen and explaining, “If you could just sign this release form explaining that any mental or physical stress you may receive during this interview isn’t the fault of the EDF and you were a willing participant, I’ll go ahead and take you over to our testing chambers.” Brushing his hair forward a few times to keep his waves straight, Ty watched GJ sign his name, nervously waiting. He would have asked more questions, but he really didn’t think in the case of someone who would most likely end up working low-risk jobs that were absolutely beneficial to the success of the Force, he’d need to know much more than what was in the file and in GJ’s face. Getting up, he walked around the desk and said, “You can just leave the paper there on the desk, and I’ll make sure my secretary gets it. Have you ever been in a simulator before?” he asked absently, opening the door and letting Goku Jr pass through. Leaning down near Sharon’s ear, he whispered, “Text me if any of the others show up. Oh, also - I left his slip on the desk - can you get that for me?” She nodded happily, and Ty breathed a sigh of relief. It really did seem nice having someone who he could boss around, but he was still unsure how much he could boss her around before he became ‘that’ kind of boss. Pushing it out of his mind for the time being, he put his arm around Goku Jr’s shoulder, and led him down the hallway. “You know, you’re a really good man, doing this. Volunteering, I mean. I know I wouldn’t have... really, ever,” he added, surprising himself. “I never really was much of the hero type, and people like you give me hope for the future of Earth.” Stopping at the room labeled ‘Rea_Sim_003’, he opened the door and gestured for Goku Jr to go inside. Staying outside the room himself, he closed the door and walked to the room next to it, where the control panel was located. In it, he found an average looking woman staring at a wall of buttons and lights and switches that made it look like something out of a sci-fi movie. “What do you want, Ty?” she asked, a mixture of boredom and interest spiking her tone as she watched Goku Jr through the glass. Surprised, he asked, “You know my name?” She almost smiled and replied, “Well, yeah, I mean you’re the only-- uh, well, you know. It’s hard to forget you.” “Right.” Suddenly very aware of himself, the African American sighed. Deciding to let it go (because if nothing else, it did seem to give him recognition), he explained, “The kid wants to be a bodyguard. Set up a simulation where he has to get some low level politician out of the city - except make it challenging. I wanna see what he can do.” “No problem,” she said, typing into a keyboard he hadn’t even noticed was there before that moment. The world changed in the room, and West City began to take shape. Specifically, Goku Jr seemed to be inside an office, and as more definition took shape, it became clear that the city was being bombed. The office was in shambles, and a simulation of a man was hiding under a desk whimpering, as distant bombs went off in the background. Speaking into the microphone, the woman explained to GJ what was going on. “The person under the desk is Mayor Chandle. Get him to the Rusty Mountains near East City. West is being attacked by a race of aliens who can transform into dragons and spit fire. They can’t fly, but they’re as big as an eighteen wheeler, and their leader has ordered them to destroy any semblence of organization on Earth, and that includes political leaders. There’s a safe house in East, however, that they haven’t found out about. Watch out also for pedestrians and stop any rioters along the way, because you don’t want any random deaths on your watch either.” “Good luck.” Turning the mic off, she spun around in her chair and looked up at Ty with a sparkle in her eye. “Wanna watch me fuck with him?” “Why not? Sharon’ll let me know if I have to go back to the office.” Taking a seat, he watched to see how his prospective EDF joinee would react. Word Count: 805 Tyrome Count: 1,646 |

Goku Jr would sign the paperwork, place it as instructed, and then follow Mr. Harris to the simulation room. “I know what they are, but I’ve never been in one before,” he would say when asked. He guessed they were going to put him through some sort of test. And so, the hybrid would settle down in the room and gasp as the world started to change around him. He wasn’t sure how the world was changing in particular. He wondered if this was all happening in his mind, or if the simulator was just projecting a really convincing hologram. Well, it probably didn’t matter either way; Goku Jr didn’t know any offensive ki attacks yet so he doubted he would cause any damage to the room. Just as the world finished shifting, Goku Jr heard Mr. Harris’ voice come out of nowhere. With a quick glance to the ceiling, he noticed that the voice was being projected through some sort of intercom. Or maybe that was just his brain trying to rationalize the source of the noise. In any case, he was charged with the task of escorting this mayor to east city, break up any riots, save people from dragons, and hopefully not getting himself killed in the process. Could he even feel pain? One quick pinch to his thigh confirmed that he could indeed feel pain. This would be interesting. Once he finally got adjusted to moving his body in this simulation world, the hybrid would reach down and grab the mayor by his hand. He was dressed in a suit which was definitely not how you avoided getting killed by aliens that wanted to kill important people. In any other situation, Goku Jr would have simply asked the man to change, but something told him he didn’t have the time for that. There was something moving outside the building that was causing extremely violent vibrations in the floors and walls. With a frown and an apologetic look, Goku Jr would tear the suit jacket off with one fluid motion and toss it to the side. The mayor, who would now be wearing suit pants and an undershirt, looked so confused as to why a little kid was undressing him in such a violent manner. He would have probably put up a fight, but he was too busy being scared at the tremors going through the building. “Hello sir,” Goku Jr would say, since this guy obviously didn’t know what was going on. “I’ve been hired to escort you to East City. There’s been an alien attack and your compliance would be much appreciated. The mayor would give one look outside then say, “Okay kid, let’s get out of here. There’s a helicopter on the roof.” Goku Jr facepalmed himself and shook his head, “Nah dude, they are specifically seeking to kill leadership. If you take off in that, you’re just going to be a big target. As soon as we get out of here, you’re getting new clothes and we’re going to travel like ordinary people. The more discreet the better.” He couldn’t believe that they were wasting so much time talking. It was time to get out of here before the cracks in the walls got any bigger. The hybrid would grab the mayor by his right arm, then jump out the window. Of course, the mayor screamed like he was about to get murdered. What part about be discreet did this guy not understand? Well, now they were falling from about the fifteenth floor of a tall building. There were large dragon looking aliens down below terrorizing the people that were flowing out of the building’s first floor. One dragon roared and sent a massive pillar of flame into the first floor, causing a massive explosion. Nope nope nope. One crisis at a time, he would think to himself as he gathered his ki into his core and blasted the mayor and himself away from the building and towards a rooftop. He would push the mayor behind a large crate before looking over at the destruction that was unfolding back at the building. These dragons were definitely stronger than anything Goku Jr had ever gone up against before and there was probably no point in trying to actually kill them. As he listened to the screams of the people, he realized that they probably put him against such strong enemies to see how he would react in a situation such as this. Well, he wasn’t one to disappoint! “Stay here, nobody should be able to see you. I’m going to go see what I can do about those dragons.” “Dragons?” the mayor would ask, but Goku Jr was already flying at top speed towards the building that was now toppling towards the ground. By the time he got there, the building had completely fallen and there were intermittent explosions going off every few seconds within the rubble. The dumbass dragons had gotten smashed by the building as it had fell so they weren’t an issue anymore. The best the hybrid could do was fly around and use his sensing ability to look for any survivors under the rubble. There weren’t that many, maybe ten tops and they were fairly easy to save by lifting a few pieces of rubble off of their trapped bodies. He would gather them up and place them well out of sight and say “stay out of sight and stick to small buildings for shelter. They’re mainly targeting infrastructure and political leaders.” What else could he have said? If they were stupid enough to go out in the open, they probably deserved to get eaten. Well, now that that was taken care of, he would head back to where he had left the mayor. However, when he got there, he found that the mayor had completely changed his appearance. The middle aged man had somehow grabbed hold of a briefcase before they had jumped out the window. It apparently contained some pretty neat weaponry since now the man had a shit ton of knives strapped to his waist. He also had a hooded black robe that completely covered his body and face. In his left hand could be seen a high spec pair of binoculars and in his right hand was a wireless radio. And what were those things pinned to his robe… were those hand grenades? This was getting a little ridiculous. “You think you got enough power there sir?” “Well,” he said with a chuckle, “when shit goes down, you gotta be ready. I’m not a competent fighter by any means, but this gear has gotten me out of quite a few sticky situations. So what’s the plan?” Goku Jr was pleased that this guy had regained his bearings and appeared somewhat knowledgeable about how to prepare for crisis situations. “We travel by foot. I could fly you to East City, but something tells me these aliens would spot us pretty easily. They can turn into dragons too, so there’s a chance they would just fly after us and that’s not a risk I’m willing to take unless absolutely necessary.” The mayor nodded and headed towards the service elevator. “we better get a move on then, I don’t’ want to be jumping off another building any time soon.” And so, the pair would exit the building and start their journey towards the edge of the city. They didn’t encounter any aliens in dragon form for the great majority of the trip and only occasionally saw regular aliens sweeping high-class residential areas. Every few minutes, horrible screams of people getting executed could be heard. However, there was little Goku Jr could so about that. No matter how much he wanted to go over and give those alien scumbags a piece of his mind, it wasn’t like he could win against one of those behemoths. No, he would continue with his primary mission of getting this batman wannabe mayor out of here. Several hours passed and they arrived at the city limit where the aliens had completely taken control. This in itself wasn’t very strange. What was odd was that they were actually letting people pass through. The process seemed to be: round a group of people up, check their biometrics, kill anybody on ‘the list,’ then let everyone else get out. Goku Jr could only assume that they were sparing most of the population so that they could be used as slaves once the planet takeover was complete. It was food for thought, at least. And for the second time today, the hybrid found himself waiting in line. Perhaps due to the programming of this artificial world, time seemed to fast forward ever so slightly and it was almost no time before it was their turn to have their biometrics tested. During this time, Goku Jr and the mayor had had some time to think of how they would get out of this predicament. After all, the mayor was undoubtedly on the list and would be killed as soon as he was scanned. The alien in charge of their group would walk around and speak “ok everyone, remove your hoods and hats. You won’t be hurt unless you’re on our shit list.” Most people had gotten the gist of this process down from waiting in line and did as they were told. When the alien finally got to the mayor, the bio-scanner started to beep rapidly. The alien smirked at the mayor then called out, “hey looks like we found one!” At that, he would point his enormous blaster at the mayor and turn the safety off. The mayor was quick to react by throwing a smoke grenade at the alien’s head while Goku Jr quickly tackled the beast’s legs. The alien roared and began to morph into what was probably his dragon form. Thankfully, the smoke grenade was doing its trick and obscuring vision for everyone in the area! Goku Jr grabbed hold of the mayor then ran at top speed out of the containment area and punched right through the makeshift walls that had been erected. By the time the dragon and other aliens spotted them, they were already several hundred meters away. However, this didn’t deter them in the slightest. Within a minute they had hopped into their cars and were blasting after them at top speeds. Fuck, the hybrid would think to himself. Now would be the exact time that he wished that he knew some kind of ki attack that would buy them some time or maybe even obliterate these assholes once and for all. Feeling as though he had no other choice, Goku Jr would grab hold of the mayor and lift him into the air in order to narrowly dodge a combination of flame and blaster shots. The mayor shouted in fear and tossed the last of his grenades. One of them luckily landed in one of the vehicles causing a massive explosion probably killing most of them. The one who had already morphed into a dragon, however, was still hot on their tail. It looked like there was no choice but to put up a fight to the death! “Drop me on his back!” the mayor would shout as Goku Jr dodged yet another spout of flames. “sure thing boss,” he would shout back as he circled around and placed him gently on the back. Before the dragon could realize what had happened, Goku Jr zoomed back to its front and delivered a kick to its neck. There was no noticeable effect other than a throbbing pain in the boy’s foot. Having completely forgotten about the mayor momentarily, the dragon focused on Goku Jr and snapped its jaws, narrowly ripping away most of the boy’s already ripped shirt. It was at this point that the hybrid noticed that the mayor was slowly but bravely moving up the dragon’s neck. Perhaps it didn’t feel him due to its incredibly thick armor? Or maybe it was just too busy trying to take the boy out of the picture. With a mighty roar, the dragon swung its right foot and smashed the hybrid into the ground. It was just about to rear its head and finish the job, but the mayor had finally reached the head. With a roar of his own, the mayor drove a knife into each of the dragon’s eyes. This didn’t make the dragon happy at all. It screeched and emitted flames in every direction imaginable. At least it lifted its foot which allowed Goku Jr to speed over to the mayor, lift him up, and fly him away as fast as he could. “Thanks,” he would say. He was partially embarrassed for having been saved by his client, but he just wanted to get this over with now. There wasn’t any sight of alien life for the remainder of the journey, so the rest of the mission was trivial. After several more hours of traveling the two arrived at East City where Goku Jr would pass on his client to the human guards at the gate. Hopefully the young hybrid had done well. -exit?- -2189 |
