The sea was grey, and wind-tossed. White-crested waves crashed into the sides of the fishing boat, water spraying onto the deck. The sky was dark, overcast. Adelaide Peters stood on the deck, grasping the railing. He was not alone. There were about a dozen others on the deck of this small fishing vessel. All were human, which wasn't surprising, given the circumstances. Off-worlders normally didn't get involved in low level politics like this. They were a rowdy-looking bunch, although his ability to sense energy only picked up a couple strong enough to manipulate their own ki. So Adelaide ignored them, staring out over the churning sea. His thoughts were on the recent activities he'd taken part in. An old Namekian had challenged him to a fight in true shonen style, as an evil figure to gauge his will to battle, the lengths he'd go to. The power of the alien had been incredible. The Namekian wasn't like those movies, though. He had not wanted to see Adelaide's restraint, far from it. He wanted to see how far the young human would go to stop bad things from happening. He wanted to find someone who was like him, willing to stop at nothing to stop evil. Adelaide didn't know if he would ever be at that point, and had ended up disagreeing with some of the Namekian's viewpoints when they discussed it over sandwiches after the battle. The memory made him smirk. Sitting down with this other man of incalculable strength, who had just gotten done beating him into the ground, over sandwiches to discuss the nature of good and evil. Not only that, but the Namekian seemed to be wanting to create a secret organization to help people. It was an intriguing proposal. Was the best sort of good anonymous good? If someone was actively good, people could look to them as an example of how to behave. The problem with that was then people would begin to rely on the 'good' person. It was the Superman conundrum. Someone with power and the ability to do good ended up exhausting themselves because no one wanted to take responsibility for their own lives. Anonymous good, on the other hand, was positive, but didn't give anyone people to look up to. If they wanted good to continue, they had to actually put forth the effort and be decent goddamn people themselves. Adelaide pulled his thoughts from that impossible argument to his current situation. He, as well as the others here, had been hired by the rebellion on Topa Topa Island. The island had been known as a tourist destination for years up until a couple of months ago. A tyrannical dictator named Mitzurugi had taken the island by force and declared himself Grand Czar. Planetary situations being what they were, no one could spare a force to go liberate the people of Topa Topa, so the dictator had been able to keep and solidify his power. A number of the locals had resented being turned into a dictatorship, and had started a rebellion. The rebels had snuck this fishing ship off of the island with the combined life savings of several of them to hire outside help. The money wasn't spectacular, but that wasn't why Adelaide had signed up. He felt listless. Every person he ended up fighting was far more powerful than he was. They wiped the floor with him, but let him live, every time. He knew he should be grateful, but it was almost insulting. He had fought, long and hard, to get to where he was now. He was probably in the top 10 for most powerful humans in the galaxy at this point. He fought the Steel Legion, stopped a second invasion of the planet from the Ancients. Well, he had helped, at any rate. That's why he had gone to help the Rebellion. He needed to prove to himself that he was stronger that he felt. Word Count: 661 Combined Word Count: 661 |

The boat came upon Topa Topa Island at night. The island looked almost imposing, a dark silhouette of a mountain rising out of the endless ocean. The voyage had been stressful for the other fighters, who had turned mean with the weather. They yelled at the rebels who were handling the boat, at each other, and at the ocean. That wasn't counting the couple who were very loudly seasick. The fighters had been about to turn into an unruly mob when Adel had walked over to the loudest, grabbed him by the side of the head, and slammed it through the deck railing. The ease with which he could do this only cemented to Adelaide the notion he had earlier about being by far the strongest fighter the rebels had managed to hire. The other warriors had quieted down, and now only kept to their complaining at a grumble amongst themselves. They quieted the hell down, though, whenever Adel swept his bored gaze over the ship. Adelaide felt like he was going through the motions. There was a dull, hollow feeling inside of him. Like no matter what he did, he would never be respected, never be appreciated. He was always some weak, helpless thing to be swatted whenever convenient by the real fighters. What do they have that I don't? Is it because I'm human? Are humans weak? God DAMN it, I've done so much! Adel thought, anger building inside of him, Who gets to decide who's weak and who's not? I've done things! Big things! I do not deserve to be treated like this! WHY IS NOTHING I DO EVER ENOUGH TO CATCH UP?! His anger was reaching a fever pitch when a spotlight swept the ship. A voice started yelling commands over a loudspeaker. The voice was coming from a patrol boat. It was an older model, grey metal with a machine gun mount. There were about a dozen armed men on the deck of the patrol boat. The rebels had frozen. They weren't really fighters, just fisherman unhappy with how their island had been taken over. That's why they had wanted Adelaide to sail with them. They didn't understand that he was strong enough to fly under his own power. They thought he was like another of these goddamn children like the belligerent crowd on this ship. Without looking, Adelaide raised his hand. His anger let him easily gather the needed ki. A shot of shining blue-white energy erupted from his palm, speeding over to the patrol boat. The oppressive gloom of the night was lifted briefly. Faces were alight, with looks ranging from confusion to fear, to anger. The patrol boat's hull blew apart when the energy wave detonated. The wooden deck of the boat exploded upwards in a fireball. Bodies flew through the sky like rag dolls, weapons and limbs flying free of their owners. The population on the fishing boat looked at Adelaide with a mixture of terror and awe. The time has come, the walrus said, Adelaide thought, as he turned to face the island. To speak of many things. The barest flicker of effort picked the young fighter off of the ship's deck. Another twitch sent him hurtling through the air. He was sick of being on that boat. He was sick of being the weakest person in the room. He was sick of always trailing behind. He'd fix Topa Topa island. Right now. Word Count: 573 Combined Word Count: 1234 |

The island wasn't very large, compared to the landmasses closest to it. The entire population was well under a million, maybe half of that stretched out over a couple dozen square miles. Most of the population was concentrated at the capital city, Topa Topa. With a bitter thought on naming conventions, Adel pushed himself forward through the air. He was flying low to the surf, his speed sending up a spray of seawater behind him. It had begun to rain, and the cold water strung his face. Occasionally, a wave would catch him in the face, but at the speed he was moving they were torn apart. The beach of the island was coming closer. Once over land, Adelaide gained some altitude. He assumed that the lights from the capital would be easy to see, and he was not disappointed. In the distance, a dull glow illuminated the clouds. He pondered briefly the best way to approach to get what he was trying to achieve. Something dark and fast whizzed by him. Adel caught a glimpse of a metal sheen as it passed by, and exploded behind him. It appeared the anti-air guns that Mitzurugi, the dictator of the island, had purchased and installed were taking aim at him. A fierce smile took over his face, as he thought of the upcoming battle. Bring me your armies, your strongest, he thought, Let us see what you can do. Adelaide started flying towards the capital city. More shots were being fired. Now that he knew they were coming, it was almost laughably easy to dodge them. He was a smaller target than an aircraft, after all. He wound himself over and around in the air, shot after shot missing him. One dodge brought him into the path of another shell. He struck it on the side, sending the metal projectile in a spinning course towards the ground, where it hit and detonated. The brief explosions weren't enough to illuminate the dark night, but Adelaide wasn't just guided by light. The power of hundreds of thousands of souls called to him. He had not truly been in a city that wasn't destroyed since he had gained the ability to sense energy. It was so much easier than just flying and looking around. The city rapidly came into view. Automatic weapons fire screamed through the air at him. Emplaced weapons belched their dangerous contents into the air, like a swarm of angry bees in the night. Tracers, burning like shooting stars, started appearing with greater frequency. Someone on that boat must have lived and radioed ahead, he thought, Or the enemy army has access to a scouter. I should really learn to mask my ki. The enhanced illumination helped him observe the enemy. They were staged in a series of checkpoints along the roads into the city. Armored vehicles were parked across the road, their machine gun turrets being operated by men in helmets. Adelaide dropped down to the closest road. It was two lines, and a decent width. He started running along the blacktop. A sputtering burst of machine gun fire caused him to dodge to the left as the heavy bullets tore a chunk of the asphalt up. The first checkpoint he was coming to had two of these armored vehicles, and both guns were engaged with him. He closed the distance in between himself and his opponents in the blink of an eye. The first gunner was surprised when Adelaide materialized in front of him. A backhand knocked the gun off of it's mooring and onto the grass next to the road. To his credit, the gunner attempted to draw his sidearm instead of just screaming. Adelaide grabbed him by the front of his uniform and threw him into the air behind him. The frightened shout of the gunner was cut short when he connected with the pavement in a sickening thud. Adel dropped a ball of ki into the gunner's hatch of that vehicle, and jumped towards the second as it blew up. The second gunner had dropped into his vehicle and closed the hatch. Through the windshield, Adelaide could see him on the radio, yelling something frantically while giving the young fighter a wide-eyed stare. The vehicle lurched as Adelaide picked it up off of the ground. It was far heavier than he had given it credit for, but his training had given him strength beyond the limits of normal men. He grunted with the effort, but soon had the car balanced, more or less, on his shoulders. With a monumental heave, he hurled it straight up. Once it started to slow and come down, Adel shot up into the air directly underneath it. He pulled back a single fist and charged it with ki. Once in range, he fired off his punch, energy enhanced as it was. The effect was immediate. The weaker armor on the bottom of the vehicle ripped apart at his punch. The energy coursed out, created a blast wave in front of his closed fist. The vehicle tore in half, both sides detonating in a shower of scrap metal and fluids. Adelaide grinned like a madman as he stared at his hands. This is power. I am powerful. He jerked his head towards the city, able to feel the army being mobilized against him. Laughing hysterically, he dropped back to the pavement and started running. He wanted to encounter the entire army, and flying over them just seemed like cheating. Formations of troops and vehicles were staged along the main road into the capital city of Topa Topa Island. There had been reports of some kind of monster working it's way through the island's defenses. The weaponry they had at their disposal hadn't affected it so far, so the entire military had been mobilized. Artillery pieces were firing down the road. Squads of soldiers were erecting fighting positions, with machine guns spitting out pounds of hot lead. The monster hadn't been sighted by the main body of the military, but their orders were clear. Complete Overkill. Thunder shook the island as the high explosive rounds the artillery were firing exploded. With the weather and darkness, all they had to report on the monster's position were the soldiers engaging it. Checkpoint after checkpoint had stopped reporting, in a clear line towards the city. Soldiers gripped their weapons with fear and grim resolution. What sort of monster was this? Some leftover monstrosity from the Steel Legion? One of those unearthly strong Saiyans that they had heard about? Something even worse? One soldier was working on lighting a cigarette. He didn't know why he was out here. What could infantry do against monsters? He supposed he could shoot at it, but that had been the plan so far, and apparently it wasn't working. As he took a drag off of the smoldering cylinder of organic material, the firing of the artillery pieces slowed. In the lull, he heard a noise. He couldn't place it, but he kept growing louder. It was coming from down the road. With a shudder, the soldier grasped his rifle and brought it to his shoulder. He knew that noise. That was hysterical laughter. Adelaide Peters erupted from the darkness over the assembled army, crashing down on top of a fighting position. A backhand knocked the nearest soldier a few dozen feet, into another man. The soldier on Adel's right caught a left hook hard enough to send him spinning into the air. Crouching down, the young fighter leapt, aiming himself towards the closest artillery piece. He spun in the air, bringing his legs in front of him. He connected solidly with the barrel, warping the metal inwards. Adel back flipped off of the gun as it fired a shot, the munition getting trapped in the barrel and exploding. The gun blew itself apart, cutting short the screams of the firing team. Adel's back flip brought him into the nearest squad of soldiers. They opened fire with their rifles at the descending form of the warrior. He landed in the middle of them, then disappeared. Bullets ripped into the soldiers as they kept firing, blinded by the flashes of explosions and tracer rounds. Adelaide was already on the move, slamming a shoulder into an armored car. The vehicle tipped over, settling on it's side, top facing the city. Adel planted both hands on the undercarriage of the vehicle and started running. Sparks flew as he pushed the armored vehicle down the road, shoving aside soldiers, vehicles, and container walls. Once past the bulk of the troops, Adel threw the armored car behind him, then jumped once again, turning himself in the air. When the vehicle crashed to the ground he gathered his energy, and fired six shots of energy after it. They coalesced into an impressive explosion, blowing apart the roadway and destroying the remaining artillery pieces at this area. He landed lightly, on the balls of his feet. Quickly, he turned and kept running down the road. So far, the troops he had encountered, although viscerally entertaining in a way all too violent for him to be entirely comfortable with, had been a massive disappointment. Their toys broke apart quite spectacularly, though. Adelaide found himself on the outskirts of the city. Facing him were a line of tanks, with their main guns all aimed at him. The guns fired as one. Adelaide felt the world slow down as he called on his superhuman speed. He could see each round. They were large, sleek, dangerous looking metallic cylinders. Adel ran underneath them, past the tanks, and kicked himself into the air. Time sped up for him, the grey tinge leaving his field of vision. Cannon fire roared as the ordnance fired by the tanks connected with the ground where Adelaide had been standing a moment before. Adelaide cupped his hands together at his side. "Kamehame-HA!" He gathered energy between his palms, which he pushed forward. A beam of blue and white ki soared from him, striking the middle of the line of tanks. A field of destruction expanded from the point of impact, energy spreading out once it was no longer contained in the form of the attack. The tanks lifted off of the ground with the force of the blast, splitting into tiny pieces at the great destructive force they encountered. The wind roared as the explosion shook the ground. Nearby buildings cracked, windows obliterated. A few fell, kicking up more dust and debris than Adel's attack had. It was a fitting crescendo to his assault. Since he was already in the air, he activated his bukujutsu to stay aloft, and turned. The palace of the dictator was the largest building in the capital city. It wouldn't be too hard for him to spot. Word Count: 886 Combined Word Count: 3037 |

The Palace was exactly as large and gaudy as Adelaide had imagined it to be. There was still scaffolding up from where repairs crews had undoubtedly been the day before. The entire structure was designed to look vaguely Roman, with a wide avenue leading up to the steps, lined with statuary and columns. The building was surrounded by troops and vehicles. Above it were attack helicopters, firing missiles. Adelaide shot forward, grabbing one of the missiles meant for him. In mid-air, he began spinning, as if a discus thrower of ancient times. He released the missile, sending it back at the helicopter that fired it. The flying machine managed to evade the projectile easily, which Adel had been expecting. He was flying immediately behind the bomb. As the helicopter dodged above the spinning explosive, Adel flew under it, grabbing the tail. With a grunt, he began to spin it in the air. Fighting the engines of the machine was difficult, and they whined with the effort of opposing him. It was pointless, though, as the body of the machine began to move in the direction Adel was pulling. He threw the helicopter in the direction of the second, fully intent on living out his action movie fantasies at this point. The helis collided impressively. Their rotors touched first, shearing apart. High speed pieces of metal flew in every direction. The ones that headed towards the ground ripped into the ranks of enemy soldiers, tearing a gouge in their lines. Some of the soldiers began to break ranks. Adelaide couldn't exactly blame them. He had been hard on the army, and it wasn't really their fault. They had been following the orders of the Grand Czar... That thought snapped Adel back to his mission. He was supposed to stop Mitzurugi. He shouldn't have been wasting time like this, attacking these soldiers. Ignoring the bullets that were sporadically being fired in his direction, Adel flew past the remnants of the Army and into the palace. The great double doors were barred, but that made little difference. He threw a series of punches, denting the thick metal and ripping them off of their hinges. They fell to the marble floor with a huge crash. The doors led into a grand foyer, which Adel flew through to the doors on the other side. They would lead to the throne room, which was where Adelaide really wanted to be. The doors to the throne room were made of wood, and they stood up to his punches even more poorly than the previous ones. They splintered apart, showering the room with shards of wood. The throne room was sumptuously decorated in a style that Adelaide couldn't place, although the word gauche sprang to mind. Sitting on the throne, a massive monstrosity of bronze, marble, and gems, was who Adelaide could only assume was Mitzurugi, the Grand Czar. He was hoisting a rocket propelled grenade on his shoulder and aiming down the sights, which were trained on the door that Adelaide had just smashed through. He squeezed the trigger, firing the RPG at the young fighter. Adel swatted away the projectile with almost contemptuous ease. It struck a wall and exploded, showering the two men in debris. Mitzurugi's eyes grew wide, and he attempted to scramble behind his throne. Adelaide was there in a moment. He grasped the uniform of the dictator and threw him into the center of the room. Looking around, Adel ripped some piping from the wall. Adelaide turned from his work to see that the dictator had drawn a pistol, and started to fire. Adel dodged the bullets until Mitzurugi ran dry, the repeated clicking of his trigger the only sound issuing from his sidearm. He gave the dictator a flat glare, and advanced towards him. The rebels arrived at the deserted palace only fifteen minutes after Adelaide left by air. In the destroyed throne room, they found their former 'Grand Czar'. He was wrapped in metal, which had been twisted into a bow. His jaw was broken. Word Count: 675 Combined Word Count: 3712 |
