(Continued from Elemental Fury Quest)

“Alright, here’s how our operation is going to go: The crude is in this area, our quest is to exterminate it. It is extremely tough. Rumors have it that a couple of bullets won’t be able to do the trick and that this creature is smart enough to heal its wounds.” Daniel drew a little diagram in the dirt of the area they would attack it at. “Last report stated that it was headed towards this area here Former sight of a Yaid laboratory. We’ll ambush it here. “Copter bait, we’re counting on you to cripple some of its limbs before we engage in combat, since the crude’s skull is extra hard we can’t count on a one shot one kill situation. Got it Copter ~ bait?” Gine rolled her eyes and nodded to her orders. The other fellows looked on the diagram for a little bit longer before kicking the diagram out of existence. “Alright team, let’s move.”

“there is definitely something wrong with this quest. It’s too simple.” Gine thought from her position up in the hills. “Why would Yaid send an entire group to take care of a single monster? This sounds like the job of one local. If you’re going to send an entire group, you might as well let one of the higher ranking members of local clean this mess up. Assuming it’s that dangerous in reality.” She gripped her weapon securely, she let her trigger finger rest on the side of the trigger ring as she scanned the area without the aid of her scope. If she felt she needed it, she would look through her scouter and double check a particular area, or thing she thought she saw. Everyone was in position. She could see everybody but”Nice ass.” She heard Daniel say as she plopped down beside her.

“Daniel, what are you doing out of position?” Gine asked her in a flat tone. Daniel slapped her bottom before looking over the area with him. “Its just one monster the boys can take care of it.” she said, putting his arm around her waste. She grabbed the wrist with a hand and removed it from her person. “Daniel, you’ve got to be kidding me. What was all of that about crippling the monster then?”

“Its just one monster, and its not even a big one. We got seven good guys down there with sharp swords. I think they can handle things pretty well.” he put her arms around her and tried to kiss her. “I’m totally reporting you for Sexual harassment.” She told him, pushing him off of her. “Hey Copter face, I can get you in a hell of a lot of trouble just because I’m the commander of this operation.”

Gine wasn’t sure what to do after this, or even what to say. She pushed her onto the ground and got on top of her. She started to unbuckle his pants. “I’ve wanted ” he started to unzip his pants.” to do this since the first time I saw you. Spread those legs.” he smiled to her, putting a knee in between her legs so that she couldn’t press them together. “If you’re a good girl, I might even get you promoted.” he laughed, he started to reach for her pants when a bloody hand erupted from his chest.

Daniel was throw off of Gine. She looked at her body as it writhed on the dirt before settling in a pool of blood. Gine looked up at the owner of the hand it was the very same Creature she had been ordered to kill. “Are you alright?” The creature asked her. She nodded slowly her gun was just out of reach. If she was quick enough though she could grab it and maybe shoot this guy in the head. “Your eyes ” she said, brushing Gine’s cheek with her other hand. “You’re with local too are you? Hmph I should have let him rape you, now I’ll have to worry about having you at my back.”

Her gun if she could just ”You have no clue what you’ve gotten yourself into have you?” the creature questioned her. “That’s alright then. I will tell you a story. I was like you once a local.” “You’re expendable you know? I don’t care what your rank is you’re expendable. YAID doesn’t care. They don’t care.” The monster turned its head towards the oil reactor if she wanted to Gine could grab her gun and fire. It was the perfect chance. “I was ’volunteered’ for a special research project. Are you familiar with Demons? Local third Class?”

Gine nodded. Everyone knew who she was. She was the most famous member of local there had ever been. “What about him?” Gine asked. “They’re trying to recreate it. Another Demon? Can you imagine the power they would have if they could pull something off like that? Mass Produce warriors Unimaginable ” The creature stared off into space for a moment. “I am a Failed Attempt to Recreate a Demon. I was injected with a highly concentrated dose of the same thing that you were injected with. Look at what it has done to me ” She winced as her blue eyes studied the monster’s body.

She grabbed her “weapon” and aimed it at it. “I’m sorry. I have to kill you. This is all I have.” She fired a bullet that was intended to hit the creature in the head.” You’re wrong. You have me. I would protect you.” Gine shook her head as her bullet was deflected by the long sword of one of her Comrades. “I’m sorry you don’t understand.” She said again, pulling another bullet into the feed ramp of her weapon. “No you don’t understand. This isn’t just about you.” The creature sliced one of the local’s Swords in half.

“This is about all of us. What I’m about to do is for all of your Goods! All of them. Even yours!” The monster yelled stabbing her clawed hand through another local’s chest. “IS it FOR Our good or just your vengeance?!” Another local yelled back at the creature. Gine cocked the armor and aimed fired The bullet seared through the monster’s flesh. It ate at the creature’s bones He toppled as her leg no longer supported her. “I really wish that you were my daughter ” it told Gine as it raised a hand into the air, “even so I can’t let you stop me.” she bitch slapped Gine so hard that she found that her eyes were rolling around in her head. She had become completely disoriented She was trying to figure out where she was but she just couldn’t. Where was she? What is this? Grass?

Where was she? What were those sounds of fighting? What are those blurs? She tried so hard to gain her bearings, but in the end blackness consumed her. It was night when she opened her eyes. There were dead bodies all around here. There was only one person who had survived and that was the man that Daniel had been arguing with those few days ago. “Where is everybody?” she asked stupidly, she knew that they were dead but for some reason she didn’t. The fellow said nothing. “So what’s your name?” Gine was testing the waters with this man.

He just kept rocking back and forth in a nervous manner as he stared into the flames of a fire that he probably put together. She scooted closer to the flames and stared into them as well what was he seeing in them? She saw that creature as she slaughtered her team maters claiming that it was for their own good. What is it that could possibly be good for them? How can killing someone possibly be good? Death everywhere Gine found that she was running out of things to exploit in her past. Every single connection she had every single one They were being severed one by one and Gine was becoming tougher for it. At this point she didn’t even feel anything for the people whom had died. She didn’t feel anything for them.

Not for them or for anyone else she had killed. She didn’t care for her Father or at least for the man whom had played father for her. She didn’t care about Yaid. She didn’t care about Daniel, she didn’t care about that blank face of a nameless local that was staring right back at her. She didn’t care about any of it at all Daniel’s body started ringing. Gine walked over and picked up her phone it was all bloody she didn’t care. “Daniel? Why is your report late?” It was the commander’s voice. “Is the crude dead or not?” she was asking. Gine was silent. “Daniel? Daniel?” She closed her eyes after a minute and took a deep breath. “This is 3rd class saiyan Gine. Daniel was terminated. Along with Shepard, Ulgia, Cotan, and Dandy.”

Only myself and ” the young man staring into the fire filled in her name for Gine, “Richard.” Gine nodded to her. “Only Myself and Richard have survived our first encounter with the crude.” “What? Are you kidding? It’s just a monster, how could almost all of D group get wiped out?” Gine really didn’t feel like explaining things to the commander at the current moment. Then again was the commander as misinformed as they were? This creature wasn’t even a Creature. It was a local. Why did Yaid want it dead? What did it all mean? “Commander, the crude was far more intelligent than the reports said it was. It could talk.”

“Could it? What did it say?” Gine relayed its information to the Commander, the commander said nothing afterwards. There was a moment of utter quietness upon the phone line, then at last the Commander spoke up, “Where was the last location you had contact with it?” he questioned Gine, she started poking at the fire with a stick with her free hand. “At the ambush point.” She told him. She hit a weak log and it burst into sparks as little flakes flew out of the flame.

“At the Ambush point? What in the world happened there?” Gine explained to him how the creature managed to ambush them though she didn’t mention a thing about Daniel trying to attack her. “How did you two survive?” Gine shrugged “I don’t know sir, He it knocked me out.” The commander sounded annoyed, “What about Richard? Does she have anything to add?” Gine was about to toss the phone to the fellow. “I’m not sure, here, I’ll put him on the line for you.”

She tossed the phone to Richard he let it fall to the ground as he made no real attempt to catch the object. After minutes of staring into the flame, he picked the phone up without looking and answered it. “Hello?” Meanwhile, Gine felt the cheek where the crude had slapped him. It was bruised definitely. The spot was sore and very sensitive to the touch. “Ouch, ouch, ouch ” she whispered to herself as she tested her injury.

“No sir!” Richard started to yell into the phone. He threw it onto the ground, pulled out his long sword and started hacking it into pieces all the while he continued to yell “NO SIR!“ Gine looked on the event in horror. What else could she do? If she tried to stop her she would probably end up hurting her too. Then at long last she stopped and just slumped to the ground. Now seemed like a pretty safe time to ask: “Is something wrong?” “NO SIR!” he began to tell Gine. She shook her head to herself look like she really was the only survivor. She flipped her cell phone open and started to dial a number on it. “HQ? 3rd class saiyan Gine reporting in. I don’t believe Richard is in her right mind. Requesting pick up for Richard.”

She waited for a moment while her request was processed. “Negative, D group is scheduled to have a pick up once their quest is complete and only after it is complete.” Gine hung up on the guy it seemed she really would have to go into the base and kill the Crude. She looked at Richard who nervously stared into the flames well it didn’t look like she was going anywhere. She picked up her armor and began to head down towards an abandoned oil reactor at least that was what it had been claimed to be. When she entered the building, it certainly looked that way it was dark and it put Gine on edge because the shadows seemed to move.

She walked down a hallway with her back pressed against a wall. “Gawd ” she said to herself nervously She continued down the dark reactor’s halls until she saw a light coming from a staircase embedded in the floor. She checked her surroundings before walking down into the light. She was so on edge she hated how the light made her shadow peer over the corners She pressed on towards the first door and peeked inside. “Nothing ” Oh but there was something. Something indeed, it was some kind of laboratory. Gine couldn’t possibly know what to say about this. The kind of tools they had in the room looked like they could have been used for torture.

She winced at a bloody hook sitting on top of a stool. What could that have been used for? She flinched at the thought. Gine pressed forward Then there was the call behind her ”NO SIR!! NO SIR!! NO SIR!!!” Gine shook her head. “Dammit Richard What are you doing down here ?” she whispered to herself. By the sound of it Richard was still somewhere back down the tunnel, she wouldn’t have to worry about him yet, but something was clearly wrong with him.

Gine peered around a corner and saw the crude using some of the lab equipment that had been left over he was mixing chemicals together and running them through a oil engine. “FREEZE!!!” Gine yelled at her. The crude smiled. “So strong. I really wish I had been your father I really do But I already told you that you are not allowed to stop me. I will do whatever it takes to finish my work even if it means killing you. ”

Gine wasn’t sure if she would possibly make good on her threats Especially since she was the one holding the weapon. It was impossible for her to dodge it at this range ”Your leg healed?” she questioned, noticing that the wound was gone, “Of course the oil infusion process is quite amazing really. That’s not why I’m here though I’m here to destroy YAID. I plan on continuing their work! I will infuse myself with even more energy. I will transform myself into a weapon whose soul purpose is to Destroy YAID!!!”

Gine frowned this whole scheme seemed a bit mad to her. “You can’t possibly destroy YAID. Its too powerful. Besides, I’m sworn to protect the company.” The crude shook her head. “Not for long. I’ve done something interesting here I’ve fused the Cells from oil with satan hehehehee you probably don’t even know who or what satan is do you?” Gine had to admit that she did not.

“You’ve got his cells in you.” The man lifted his hand and Gine felt a sudden pull. It was as if all the cells in her body were going against her will on a microscopic scale. She turned her gun around and put the barrel in her own mouth. “I could kill you if I wanted too but I don’t.” The crude continued his work Gine could here Richard coming down the hall yelling. “NO SIR NO SIR NO SIR NO SIR!!!” she walked into the room, and knocked Gine over. The gun fell out of her hands she grabbed it and was about to put the barrel back into her mouth. Not that she wanted to, but her body was moving on its own. “See? SEE? I can disobey your WILL I CAN!!! ALL I HAVE TO DO IS SAY NO SIR!!!” Richard charged the Crude. His attack on the Crude ruined the creature’s concentration on Gine’s body and allowed her to control herself again.

She pulled the barrel out of her mouth and flipped the armor around. She pulled back on the feed ramp and made sure there was a bullet inside. She fired; the bullet went straight through the crude’s heart. Gine shook her head at Richard and spat on the ground. Gun oil didn’t taste good. “This is 3rd class saiyan Gine Quest complete. Requesting retrieval for D Group.” She said into the speaker of her phone. “Roger that. D group, what is your position?” Gine fired off some coordinates and began to head back. There was a click sound. Gine turned her eyes and saw something fall out of the Crude's hand.

She walked over and picked it up. It was a small containing some sort of bullets. She pocketed the case of bullets after Richard's hacking splashed blood all over her face. She shook her head and started to head back towards the camp. ’They’ll be here in the morning. ’ She thought to herself Oddly enough Gine felt no guilt. She broke this man’s heart, and felt no guilt she wanted to laugh actually. It was funny to her for some reason. Her shooting her through her chest after she wanted so very badly for her and her to be father and daughter ’Everybody is crazy around here ’ She thought to herself. ’YAID has a tendency to just drive people out of their minds its seems ’

“How much longer will I be able to hold on I wonder? Well I guess this is a first. The first time that I haven’t almost killed myself on a quest For once Though this is the second time that D group has been completely wiped out” Gine waited for the helicopter to show up she saw the grass ripple as the machine touched down. She was rushed onboard while several other guys hopped off the copter to grab the dead bodies and set them up with a secondary helicopter.

Richard was forced onto the same helicopter that Gine was on and strapped to a seat. He had two locals on either side of him holding his arms and keeping him still. “All that is left now is to report to the commander At least that’s what it looks like I’m afraid of myself I’m scared that I’m becoming too heartless I just killed a man that easily could have been my friend if fate didn’t have to twist things. If the course had run correctly he would have been my friend.” She shook her head. “Yet I don’t feel any remorse. I am scared though I don’t want to lose who I am I don’t want to end up like a demon. All of these psychos couldn’t there be a person who was in their right mind for once? I guess not I’m starting to fear for my own sanity so I suppose I understand completely how those guys feel.” Gine leaned against the window as she watched plains and oceans pass by below as they flew towards the local HQ.

“Am I destined to be one of them?” That was the question that filled her head as she suffered through the debriefing and through all the speeches about the glorious dead who died fighting a terrible creature. She was commended for her Service in local, but she didn’t care about that she was getting an award for killing someone. For killing someone. The locals counted kills, but she counted high profile kills. “Next time I do a quest like this. I better make sure to have an ESCAPE PLAN.”

“Good job Murderer.”

Gine decided to check up on Richard now that the quest was over. The only other survivor of the quest, and quite possibly the only one if he hadn't saved her life. She almost died again it seemed. Even if she didn't get any physical injuries from the whole affair. She shook her head as she wrote her name on the guest list of the Hospital. Gine, local 3rd class saiyan. “Have a nice visit D" the nurse told her. She nodded, smiling. The smile felt so fake.

She walked down the hallway, following the instructions from the nurse at the desk. “ And Daniel died too. I didn't care much for that bastard, but. Still. He was trying to get into my pants. Again. He died for it. That magnificent bastard died. I feel like laughing. Now I don't have to share the Rec. Room with that asshole anymore. I wonder how Richard will take it. He's already out of her mind, and I figured that he was friends with Daniel.”

There was someone arguing in the hallway. Two doctors talking about someone's life or death. Should they go through with the procedure? Or just let the fellow die because it costs so much money and the fellow would probably never be able to pay it off. The debt would fall to the hospital. It was a typical story. Another person trapped in limbo for the time being it seemed. She made her way down into the psychiatric ward. The place where all the lunatics were put.

She didn't think Richard was crazy. It was just that he was having a nervous breakdown right now, and he probably needed some support. Then again. Her face might trigger something. What though? For good or for ill, she entered the ward and pulled up a chair by his bed. She noted that he was strapped to the bed, she must have given them a hard time. She shook her head again and slipped the flowers she brought into a vase on her night stand.

“Brought you some flowers. More importantly though. I brought you some.” She pulled out the chocolate bar she had snuck in. "You don't remember anything that happened during that attack do you?" Richard asked. He was staring straight into the ceiling. "No. he knocked me out cold.” Richard shook his head. "You sure didn't look knocked out. Then again. We all were acting the same. "

"What do you mean?" Gine questioned, opening the chocolate bar and eating it. She was a girl after all and girls had to have their chocolate. Even if the chocolate was meant for a hospitalized person. "He made us kill each other. I was about to kill you. I was about to kill you. You and I killed everybody, and I was about to kill you too.” she shook her head, tears were coming down her face. "Instead. I got control somehow and managed to subdue you. We're lucky to be alive, you're lucky to be alive. "

'So. This bruise on my face isn't from the crude hitting me? IT was from Richard hitting me? This is. I can't imagine the pain she had. Maybe that's why the Crude knocked me out. So I wouldn't feel guilt when I woke up and everyone was dead. ‘She folded her arms and looked out at another person who was strapped up. "I figured out that if I just denied her orders. With all my being. That I could fight her control. Just by saying. No sir. No sir. That’s right. Denying her orders. No. SIR.” she laughed to herself for a moment.

"They locked me up here, not because I'm crazy, but because I can't control my body. His commands are still trying to force me to move, so I have to keep on it. I have to keep denying his orders. If I don't. Then I can't control myself. I can't right now. Because I'm not saying No sir. NO SIR! No I'm not.” he laid back on her pillow, the only thing he really could do at the moment.

"I'm sorry you had to suffer.” She said with as much sincerity as she could manage. She was finding that being. Blending with the humans was becoming harder for her. Her heart was becoming rock solid day. By day. If this kept up. She didn't think that local was really somewhere she should be. It was the only place she could be though. They owned him. They patched him together so many times that he was in an insurmountable debt. They taught him all she knew. They made her body strong. What else? What else had they done for him?

They helped her escape that hell hole in the ground. El Casa de Kiko cruciate. She mentally spat on that name. Even if she really did care for the man who owned that complex, and her mother who was tied to that place until she died. Even if. Her heart was so hard now. She didn't care. She hated that place because of the moans that filled the night. It made her sick to the stomach. Some of those moans had been hers.

"Don't worry about it local 3rd class saiyan. I just ask you to enjoy life for me. Because I'm not going to be able to now.” she said with a bit of. Sorrow. In her throat. "I just wish they would end it. Prolonging my life is only increasing my pain.” Gine put a hand on her shoulder, "Don't worry. They’ll fix you. They'll stop the crude from controlling you. Then you can experience everything for yourself. You will. "

"Those are kind words. Just go. I was an ass to you before. I don't deserve sympathy.” She smiled and patted her on the head. "Get well soon and. oh. Sorry I ate the chocolate I brought you.” she laughed and shook her head, "Don't worry, I'm allergic to chocolate, you might have just saved my life. In more than one way. I have hope now. Maybe I can beat this thing after all.” Gine nodded, "Maybe. "

"I'll see you around Richard.” she stood up and began to leave. 'Maybe there is still something soft in my heart. '

Quickly spinning she brought her heel up and about. The thug tried to dodge but Kiko still caught the tip of her nose which began to bleed profusely. The third and likely the most stupid member of the group watched her friends fall to the ground and figured that the little girl could still not really hurt her she was after all bigger than her. Kiko clasped her hands tightly together and brought them sharply upward to smash into the jaw of the man. As it would turn out a Yaid jaw and she joined to companions in the dirt. Kiko looked at Gine once and stuck her tongue out at her while winking. “I guess if you are what you say you are then beating up these bozos is part of your job today.”
Did she look like a girl? Gine didn’t think so. Sure she wasn’t the most bulky of men and she had long hair but she thought that her blatant lack of breasts would have been enough to know she was male. It was no matter though for as a few of the thugs closed in on her she caught one of their wrists and spun around her arm, bringing her elbow against the side of the man’s head. She then let go of her wrist and looked over at ‘Kiko’ who was handling her own attackers.

A hand went to her shoulder and Gine grabbed it and threw her weight forward, lifting the man off the ground and over her shoulder and smacked her onto the ground hard, letting go of her hand afterwards and turning to face the remaining group members. She took a step forward and raised her fists to guard her center then threw her fist against one man’s face too quickly for her to dodge. She then returned to her center and round-house kicked another man to the ground. That was three for Kiko and four for her. Three were left.

“You fight pretty well,” said Gine backing up closer to Kiko, forgetting about her past doubts about her, “you must not be a civilian, what with the Spec Ops wanting to retrieve you and you fighting like it was nothing special. You could be local or Sentry. And no my job is to watch out for anti-Yaid activity--,” she stopped and did a double take at the woman as she made the face at her. She stuttered as she tried to say something then was suddenly caught with a stiff right hook and she went tumbling to the side. Thankfully her helmet had taken most of the blow.

Gine stood up as quickly as she could and charged the men, grabbing one around the waist and throwing her against another one, a sudden desire to protect the woman had given her new strength and motivation. It was because she recognized that face, with the tongue out and the wink. It was her buddy Karen.
Kiko heard Gine stuttering before she took a hit. She seemed to be fiercer now but Kiko did not really have time to pay attention. She was busy with her own thugs. She went to kick one but she grabbed her leg. Rather than worry she jumped and spun smashing her heel against the side of the thugs head. She realized her leg and Kiko quickly rolled to one side and as she came up she brought her fist to meet the nose of the thug she had kicked in the nose earlier. She again fell back holding her nose. Kiko turned quickly and again kicked another guy between the legs.

A man quickly wrapped her up in her arms and was rewarded with a heel being smashed between her legs. She fell backwards and Kiko used the guy on her hands and knees as a stepping stool to gain height. After stomping on her back she did an aerial round house kick to another thugs face. A thug with bright red hair and a rather nice suit strode towards Kiko. It looked like she was about to say something when Kiko jumped and planted both feet against her chest. She was sent rolling backwards and got up with an annoyed expression on her face. Kiko had gotten up again but the thugs about her seemed to have lost interest and were backing off.
Gine turned around and saw that Karen was dealing with the thugs rather nicely, recognizing the style as that which was taught to sentry and not local. Had she been working for the company and she hadn’t even realized? It was then that her hair was grabbed from behind and she was yanked backwards. Her hand instantly went up and wrapped around her hair above the hand that was holding it and jerked forward, causing the man holding it to stumble. Gine then turned and round-house kicked the guy to the ground, her hair flaring out from the movement before settling down on her back, some going over her shoulder.

He charged the other thugs who backed away quickly and a few began to run. Gine tilted her head then turned to see Kiko standing up with a less than pleased look on her face and two dusty footprints on the front of her suit. Gine couldn’t help but laugh and Kiko looked at her squarely and said, “Ah shut up.”

Gine sis, but not because she had been told to. Instead she went over to Karen and said, “Karen, do you remember me? It’s Gine,” she took her helmet off again, “your buddy, remember?” it had been a really long time since she had seen Karen. The last time was just before her father had died and Gine had been sent to the orphanage. They had been really young then but Gine would never forget the face she always used to make at her. She wondered if she would remember, too.
So the battle had ended and the guy in the suit had turned out to be a friend. This did not end problems as this Gine called her Karen and stated that she was her buddy. “Gine?” Was all she was able to get out before she fell into the turmoil of her own mind? The harder she tried to remember the more she felt the recent torment she had gone through. It was at this point that Kiko spoke up. “Gine she has Amnesia so she most likely does not remember. Although perhaps using her real name may help jog her memories. Yaid is very interested in debriefing her on her last quest.” Kiko thought Quest and Yaid but the pain was too much and she dropped to the ground twitching. After a short time Kiko sat back up she shook her head as if to tell them she still did not remember.
“Amnesia?” Gine breathed in almost disbelief, she looked from Karen to Kiko, then back to Karen. She stood up straight and took a step back, trying to figure it out, to sort out her thoughts. She sighed then looked up at Karen, tears brimming in her eyes but she did not let them fall, “she’ll remember eventually right?” she asked, her voice shaking.

“It’s too early to tell you,” said Kiko, shoving her hands into her pockets, “but the chances are good she will.”

Gine looked at Karen and blinked away the tears before she said, “I will help you remember, I promise I will do all in my power to help you remember,” she took a breath and continued, “you are my buddy, your name is Karen [last names], you are the daughter of my friend’s brother. We last saw each other right before your father died” she took a shaky breath, feeling ready to cry again. She paused there, to see if what she said sparked anything.
Kiko listened to everything they had to say and placed both hands on the sides of her head. In her mind images were flashing about rapidly like someone rapidly changing the channel. Kiko rubbed her chin as if lost in thought and Kiko lowered her head and closed her eyes trying to sort out the images. She saw herself standing in black as a casket was being lowered into the ground. She saw a picture on the wall with a man surrounded by females. She saw herself saluting a local in the uniform of a sentry. Karen could not connect the pieces of the puzzle however. No matter what something was missing in her mind. She saw herself then getting ready to go to the basic training and her father in her local uniform introducing another local as her buddy Gine the person looked similar to the man before her.

Kiko looked up then and began to cry she wanted to remember everything but could not. “I remember Gine. I remember a funeral and seeing you before I went into basic training for sentry. You were with my father something big was going to happen but I can’t remember what.” Kiko felt searing pain as she tried to remember like a burning brand had been placed over her memories. She wanted to scream but could not find the strength to do even that.

Gine closed her eyes, letting out a long yawn. She grumbled to herself to a few seconds before letting her right eyelid crack open, flooding her eyes with dim light. Patrol duty again. Ugh, what a bore. She stood atop a large metal beam that protruded from part of an under construction highway. The beam was just under two feet wide and the local was positioned at the very edge of the metal. From up on her perch, she held a commanding view of the area around her. A slight wind flowed freely between the constructs of the area, leaving her hair and the ends of her uniform to fly in the air current. The everyday lights of Dawn Town filled her vision, creating a dazzling glow of yellow and white before her. Below her, the scenery was much different; only a handful of lights lit the chasm of darkness that spread under Gine.

It was dawn, and the faint amber aura of the sun was just beginning to touch the opposite side of the city. Until about noon, this section would be bathed in the shadows of the rest of the city. Unfortunately, Gine wouldn't be there long enough to enjoy the ease of patrol in full daylight. This assignment was a punishment for her latest case of disobeyed orders. Her last quest was to keep a group of monsters away from a small town outside of Dawn Town. She had gotten carried away, chasing after the pack when they fled. Despite her victory, a second pack of monsters had assaulted her allies at the town while she was mopping the first group up. Two of the three other locals had been severely injured. When she thought about the incident, she found herself grinning. Although she had been passed up for promotion yet again, at least she managed to have some fun in all the chaos.

Gine lifted up her other eyelid, deciding that it was about time for her to get started. She pulled out a pair of headphones from her shirt pocket and put them into her ears before she started scanning across the dimmed landscape before her, looking for any sign of movement. It was odd for anyone around this neighborhood to be out this early in the morning, so it was her job to investigate anything deemed "out of the ordinary” So she turned up the music that she kept on her phone and listened to the beats as she waited. It didn't take long. The local's oil eyes honed in on a shadow darting through the streets not far away. Well, time to get to work. Gine knew better than to deviate from the quest this time, it was always dangerous to screw up twice in a row.

Without further hesitation, Gine unslung her gun from her back and hoped off the edge of the steel girder, plummeting about 10 feet to a rooftop that was just below her. From there, she jumped down twice more so that she was on the third floor of the building directly under her perch. Running across the shabby roof for about a block, Gine kept her eyes locked on the blur of movement. By now, they must have known they were being chased. At the end of the block, the local kicked off the edge of the roof, soaring across the street to a second story building. As a third floor wall rose up in front of her, she jumped to the side and slid down a metal bar that was fixated on the side of the building. Now running through the streets herself, Gine chased the shadow into an alley. She slowed her pace considerably, fearing an ambush. There. Gine moved over to a trashcan and kicked it over, pointing her armor down at the shadow behind it.

The cat, scared out of its mind, darted down the alley, quickly vanishing from sight. Gine let her gun fall to her side and dangle from her shoulder by its strap. She took a deep breath and sighed. "Just a cat.” Turning around, she walked back out of the alley and turned her music down a little so that she could better hear the sounds of the quiet morning.

The air was still, and there were barely any noises to be heard outside the rustling of wind and the occasional rodent. Among the shaded buildings, there were barely any lights on. Those that were on belonged to people that were probably preparing for work, as far off as it seemed. As Gine stepped out of the alley, she quickly checked up and down the street for any more signs of activity. All things considered, it was an uneventful morning so far. Gine turned to the right due to a strange imbullet and slowly walked down the street. Coming to an intersection, she looked down each of the streets, once again seeing nothing. As quiet as it was, Gine found it eerie to be the only one on the streets. It was almost like she was just waiting for something to happen.

He continued walking straight through the intersection, deciding it was best to push these thoughts aside. A long day would only feel longer if she kept thinking about it. When she reached the end of the next block, she noticed the sound of footsteps between the beats of her music. She pulled her headphones out tried to focus on where the sound was coming from. The footsteps grew louder and louder until it seemed as if the source was right next to her. Taking a step forward from behind a building, Gine raised her gun and quickly turned to the left.

"State your business. "

"What the? Uh. Um. S-s-sorry s-sir, I’m just on my way t-to the train sat-station.” Gine pulled her weapon from kid's neck and pointed it at his torso instead. After all, she only needed to get some information, not make them crap themself. "It's a bit early to go to the station isn't it? The train doesn't even start to get ready to depart for another hour or so. "

"THz-the engineer was going to show me some of the systems. I've been training to help keep up with maintenance on the trains. "

Gine kept her eyes trained on the kid, trying to decide if he was telling the truth or not. He wouldn't even dream of lying right now. Look how badly he's shaking, probably didn't even hear me coming. She pulled her weapon back and turned it off. "Whatever, get going, you shouldn't be out on the street this early.” The boy took off in a mad dash, trying to get away from the woman as fast as he could. Gine shook her head and chuckled softly to herself as she started walking again. Before she could go more than a few steps, her cell phone rang. She pulled it out of her pocket and flipped it open, bringing it up to her ear. "I’m here.”
A deep voice poured out of the speaker. "Gine, what’s your status?"
"Two false alarms so far, a kid headed to the station and a cat. "
There was a deep laugh from the other end.” Any casualties yet?"
"Give me a break Kiko, It’s partly your fault that I’m on this assignment anyway. "
"Hey, no complaining, you've got work to do after all.”

There was a click on the other end and Gine closed her phone. Eric, or rather, "Riot", was one of Gine's few friends and had been since she first joined Yaid. He was the other person that wasn't injured in the last quest. He had been "busy" when the monsters attacked. Although Gine didn't know exactly what he had been doing, she knew that he didn't get punished for it. Letting out a sigh, Gine put her phone is her pocket and put her headphones back on. With the flick of a switch, the faint music started up again, covering up the dead silence that filled the streets.

Almost feeling as if she were just looking for something to break up the monotony of her task, Gine slowly increased her pace. It had almost been an hour before anything else happened. It was still some time before the streets would come alive, meaning that she was still on patrol for some time. She noticed that more lights began to turn on, but it was still insignificant compared to the rest of the city. Soon, she came to the outer edge of the region and she could faintly see the black ring of lifeless wasteland that encircled Dawn Town. It wasn't a pretty sight, but one got used to it after living in the city for this long.

The edge of her stare caught movement again. Hoping that it wasn't another false alarm, Gine immediately turned around. She only managed to catch the image of a shadow fading behind the cover of the second floor wall of a building. Finally. This boredom was almost getting unbearable. He switched her music back off and began walking back down the street in a casual manner. When she reached the building where she saw the shadow, Gine ran at the wall, walking up three steps before grabbing onto a narrow ledge that the architecture created. The local pulled herself up and grabbed onto the bottom of a window frame which she used as a step ladder until she could reach the edge the roof. She hauled herself over the edge of the roof and got back to her feet.

Out of an unconscious reflex, she pulled her gun out and brought it up to her shoulder. Her eyes scanned across the roof, looking for anything that had been disturbed. After a few moments, she noticed that the layer of dust that covered the roof was compacted in some spots, forming a sort of footprint shape. These she followed to the edge of the building. She looked down and into a darkened alley through her armor scope, seeing nothing. Still following her instincts, Gine jumped down into the alley. She was surrounded on three sides by brick walls and the only path out was very narrow; only about 2 feet wide. It didn't appear that this alley was connected to the streets and further investigation revealed a crude ladder that was attached to the wall.

Gine flipped open her phone and rapidly typed in several numbers. She brought it up to her ear and spoke, keeping her voice in a low whisper. "Dark here, I might have something. Yeah, I’m in a secluded alley behind a building on Glaive Street. Yeah, standard procedure, ill report back in ten minutes.” she put her phone back and slowly moved forward with her gun in the crook of her shoulder. She tried to keep as silent as possible, but the ground was littered with trash that she kept stepping on. She looked around a corner to see single door at the end of a 20 foot passage. It took less than 30 seconds to make it to the door with minimal noise.

Gine put her ear to the wood and listened for anything on the other side. There were very quiet noises, but she couldn't quite make out what they were. Let’s do this. Gine took a deep breath and positioned herself in front of the door. She exhaled and slammed the butt of her armor down on the door handle. As she bring her armor back up she moved her other hand back to her sword's hilt and delivered a hard kick to the door, sending it crashing back on its hinges.

Two gunshots echoed through the air. One whipped past Gine's head, narrowly missing her, while the other slammed into her abdomen, losing most of its momentum as it passed through her armor. The sudden pain made her reflexes kick in, making her take cover behind the doorframe before another shot sounded off. She could feel blood seeping out of the small wound, but for now she had to ignore it. She moved into the doorway again and sprayed the inside of the dark room with 8 rounds before going back into cover. She waited a few seconds in dead silence. The absence of returning fire or any type of groaning told Gine that they must have exited the room already. She carefully walked into the doorway and felt along the wall for a light. Her fingers met a small switch and she flipped it, bathing the once dark room in a bright light.

Gine's eyes strained to adjust as she scanned across the room. It appeared to be some sort of weapons locker with machine parts and ammo clips scattered in a huge mess. Sure enough, there was a door in the far corner that was left wide open. She sighed then ran across the room and through the passage. Like the alleyway that lead here, this hall was also extremely narrow with brick wall on both sides. She realized that if there was a fight here, it would be close quarters. She put her gun back on her back and retrieved her gun, keeping it pointed ahead of her as she ran.

The farther she went, the more the light seemed to fade, until it seemed as if it was nearly pitch black. Gine slowed her pace, now listening more than she was seeing. Not far ahead, she could barely hear the sound of faint panting. When her eyes finally adjusted to the darkness, she could make out an outline of light from another door. Better hurry. Not much longer until my scheduled check in. She walked softly across the hard floor until she reached the end of the hall. A sudden burst of movement sent the door in front of her clattering across the floor, cloven in half.

The assailant stood on the other side of the room in slight shock, not expecting the local to have followed her. He had blonde hair and stood roughly 5 foot 6, probably only about 15 years old. He was wearing a leather vest and a pair of khakis. There was an out of date Yaid regulation armor leaning against the wall beside him, but he wasn't able to reach it in time. Gine lunged forward with a wild slash. The rebel had just enough time to duck under the slash and roll to the side before Gine brought her weapon, leaving a gash in the wall behind where the kid had been.

The youth quickly got to his feet and grabbed a long sword off the wall. Gine charged at him, leaving behind slash marks on the walls and floor before finally cutting in an upward motion. As her blasts made their way towards her opponent, she began to realize that there was not enough space in the room to fight efficiently. Her foe trusted forward and she just barely had time to dodge to the side. Using the momentum from the dodge, she spun around her blade and made a turning slash against the kid. Her opponent blocked the attack, but the force from the blow threw him back into a door.

Gine drove her long sword forth, slamming it into the wall where her foe was a moment before. While the local tried to pull her broadsword back out from the wall, the kid moved in for a strike. Gine jumped back at the last second, leaving a shallow cut across her chest. Grunting, she pulled her gun from her back and fired a four round burst. Two bullets caught her enemy in the legs, making him fall to his knees as he tried to follow up to her attack. Gine took two steps forward and kicked him in the side.

Just as her kick made contact, a shockwave of pain passed through her. She looked down to see blood seeping through her uniform. The ringing of a gunshot still hung in the air by the time that she had realized what happened. Another person stood in the room, holding the gun that the kid had set by the wall. "Get away from her you freak!" Another shot tore through Gine's shoulder and she fell back against the wall. Using the hilt of her weapon to hold herself up, she emptied most of her clip in the direction of the two. The one with the gun retreated, dragging the other through the doorway before they locked the door behind them. Gine slumped back against the wall and tried to catch her breath. Her cell phone rang, but she couldn't bring herself to answer. The edges of her vision blurred and everything began to darken seconds before she blacked out.

The next thing Gine knew, someone clapped their hand on her shoulder and shook her awake. "Hey. Hey. GINE! Get up.” she hazily looked up to see the massive figure of Kiko pulling her to her feet. Shaking her head to wake up the rest of the way, she realized that her wounds had been bandaged and her long sword was no longer stuck in the wall beside her, but rather resting on Kiki’s shoulder. "Nice of you to join us, now what exactly happened here?"

Trying to focus her thoughts, Gine grabbed the end of her sword's hilt and took it from her comrade. “Some kid was following me, so I went to investigate and found this place, got shot, got ambushed, then got shot a few more times. And here we are. How long was I out?" As Kiko answered the question, she looked around the room at the scars the fight left on the room. "I left as soon as you didn't answer your phone, took me about five minutes. "

"Great, then we can still catch them if we hurry. They went that way.” Gine made a motion to the door that the two went through. Kiko cracked her knuckles and nodded, a wide grin spread across her face. "We better hurry; your shift is almost over.” Soon, the duo was rushing through the compound, following the trail of blood that the shot rebel had left behind. Normally, Gine was much faster than Kiko, but she had to slow down a bit so that it didn't create too much strain on her wounds. Kiko was built like a tank, she was easily over 6 feet tall and most of her body weight was muscle. She didn't use guns, preferring a long sword that was much like Gine's own, except a bit larger.

After several minutes of traveling down into what appeared to be an underground sewer network, they came upon the armor that the kid had been carrying. By this point, Gine was starting to reach a state of complete exhaustion. She fell behind Kiko a bit and was panting fairly hard. When Kiko realized this, she slowed down a bit, which only pushed Gine to run harder to keep her pace. It didn't take long after that for them to catch up with the two rebels.

Gine started to hear heavy footsteps up ahead. Through the darkness of the tunnel, she could see two figures ahead, one supporting the other's weight while they ran. She looked through the scouter of her gun and fired her last shot, which connected with the injured kid's lower back. She fell onto the concrete and the other took off running. Kiko took off after the runner and Gine moved over to the one that had fallen, stepping on her back to hold her down. Now that she wasn't running, she started to realize just how hurt she was. The strenuous activity had caused her wounds to reopen and coat the front of her uniform in blood. There was a gash across the fabric of her shirt and a slightly bloodied cut underneath. If her prey had not been injured as well, it was likely that she could have gotten away.

Several moments later, Kiko reappeared with the second kid over her shoulder. She looked at Gine and laughed. "Alright Gine, your shift is over, I'll take care of this and you go get some rest.” Happy to oblige, she let Kiko pick up the other prisoner and hoist her onto her free shoulder before she walked away. Gine put her gun in its holster and slowly followed her comrade back out of the complex. When they reached the room where the fight had occurred, they exited out another door and soon found themselves in the streets. Now that it was late in the morning and because they were at the outer edge of the city, the sun could be seen peeking out over the tops of the larger buildings. A group of waiting MPs relieved Kiko of her burden and took them away to places unknown.

Riot shoved Gine a few steps down the street. "Hey, I said get some rest. Give my regards to Talon and Rook; they should still be resting up at HQ.” Gine nodded and walked forth, soon disappearing amongst the city streets. “You’ll be alright Gine! I promise!” That was the last words that Cisco managed to say to her before she was rushed through double doors on a stretcher. Someone pulled something over her face, and a little disoriented, Gine tried to take it off. A nurse prevented Gine from moving the mask it was very hard to breath for some reason everything started to become blurry as shouts of doctors filled the backgrounds why were all these people hovering over her? Slowly everything began to fade into black. Was this what death was like? Just endless black for all eternity? This couldn’t be It can’t be what about all those superstitions about the life stream? Wake up Gine Wake up!

Several weeks later she had been given a clean bill of health and returned to Dawn Town. It was business as usual for the entire D group, and Cisco had even finished teaching her the rules to chop sticks even though she won almost every time, Gine felt that she was starting to get pretty good too. The Rec. Room was seldom filled in the local HQ Everyone always had a quest, but D Group was special. They did pretty much every kind of quest there was. They could almost be considered a special ops unit in local. Gine sat with three fingers on her left hand and one on her right.

Across from her was her opponent, Cisco. She had two fingers on one hand and one on the other. After analyzing the situation Gine promptly said, “You’re letting me win” Cisco shook her head and replied with, “Not at all.” A sly smile crossed her face, so Gine decided to trust her and tapped her right hand with her left. She eliminated that hand from the game. Cisco tapped his right hand with her left and he now had two on her right. Gine tapped her hand with her right again and she had four fingers on her hand now. Then she did something unexpected. He brought her other hand back into the game with two fingers out, and with his left hand having two fingers as well.

“Hey, you can’t do that! That’s cheating.” Cisco shook her head at her, “No it’s not. I wanted to use this time to explain to you another of the rules: Whenever you are holding up an even number of fingers on one hand, and your other hand has been eliminated, you can split the number of fingers between your hands to remain in the game. Like what I did just now.” Gine eyed him skeptically, “You’re not just making up rules on me are you?” Cisco smiled innocently. “Who would try to pull a fast when over you?” Gine gave her a wiry smile that was followed by a look that clearly said, ‘you duh. ’

Cisco laughed it off. “Blah. I’m bored now.” he replied to her. He promptly ended the game in search of a drink from the minifridge that sat in the Rec. room. “Are you kidding? All they serve in here is water?!” Gine walked over to the fridge and took a water bottle just to spite her. “Man” Cisco took one too out of defeat. “Is this how it always is? They keep us here when we’re not on quests so they can call us any time we’re needed?” Gine nodded slowly as she twisted the top to her water bottle off. “Jabs this is boring as all get out.” Cisco twisted her hands and lifted the cap off of her water bottle as well.

Cisco took a deep swig from the bottle and wiped her mouth with his forearm. “Do you think anyone would listen to me if I made a formal request for some soft drinks to be put into the Mini fridge?” he asked Gine. The woman local shrugged and the pair fell silent. Gine stared into her water bottle, or rather through it for a moment before she gobbled it down thirstily. “If you want some soft drinks in the fridge why don’t you go get your own and put them in there?” she suggested, tossing the empty plastic bottle into the trash bin.

“Yeah, but then I’d have to share with everybody, and plus, it would be coming out of my pay check.” Gine put the top to the water bottle she had thrown away on the tip of her thumb and tried to flick it into the basket as well, but it fell short. “I’m sure you could get some of the other 3rd class saiyans to help you pay for it all.” Cisco scoffed, “Too much work.” Gine wandered over towards the fallen cap, picked it up and tossed it into the trash bin. “Hey, I’m not the one complaining because there aren’t any soft drinks.”

“Point.” Cisco lifted up his hands as if he was surrendering. “Got any paper?” Gine watched with an amused expression as Cisco took a turn about the room in search of something to write on. At last he found a crumpled receipt in the trash bin and unfolded it. He placed it so that the front of the receipt was facing the desk and the blank back side was facing up. Cisco pulled out a pen from a desk drawer and scribbled something onto the note before showing it to Gine. The local took the note from his companion and read it aloud, “If you would like the mini fridge to be stocked with soft drinks please leave a donation inside of the mini fridge.”

Cisco nodded proudly and put the note on the fridge via a magnet. “You know how some street performers put zeni in their own hat to get people to throw in money into it?” Gine nodded. Cisco pulled out some zeni and demonstrated to Gine by holding it up for her to see, opening the mini fridge and then inserting the zeni onto the bottom shelf of the fridge. “Hopefully we don’t have any ding bats in the barracks that’ll try and take the donation money.” Gine nodded and walked over to the fridge. She pulled out the spare change in her pocket and dropped it on top of Cisco’s. “That’s mighty generous of you ma’am.” Cisco gave her a salute. “Pffft.”

Gine chuckled, she turned to look up at Cisco’s face which had sudden gone pale he looked like she saw a ghost. “Cisco? What’s wrong?” She turned to see what he was staring at and felt her heart skip a beat. “Demon?” It would appear indeed that it was the long haired local. His long sword was casually held at his side as he stepped into the Rec. room. He raised her blade. Gine kicked the nearby love seat over at Demon, but he sliced it in two. This was the amount of time she needed to grab her armor and defend against her second attack. “Too fast!”

Cisco whipped out her gigantic weapon and tried to smash Demon, but the demon caught it with the palm of his hand. The man stared into Gine’s eyes and said simply, “Mother?” Gine wasn’t sure what to say to her. “Umm yes?” Demon shook his head. And spun around so that he made a torrent of slashes, Cisco defended by holding up his gigantic sword, while Gine jumped out of the way. She raised her gun and fired. It blew a whole into Demon’s chest. “Demon? I thought that loser was dead!” Cisco panted at long last.

Gine looked over at the Demon clone. It was definitely a clone, the face didn’t look anything like Demon’s now that she thought about it. “It’s not the real one. It’s just a clone.” Cisco did a double take, “Just a clone? Could’ve fooled me.” Gine rolled her eyes, “You goof ball, if he was the real one we’d probably be dead. That’s the difference between us 3rd class saiyan and a 1st class.” Gine whipped another bullet into the chamber of her gun. “I think something is seriously wrong if there are Demon clones inside of D’s Barracks.” Cisco nodded, “Probably. Let’s get on it!”

Gine and Cisco ran down the hallway towards the commander’s office. Gine felt like she needed to check with the commander since she probably knew what was going on. She kicked the door in and looked around another demon clone with a Demon. She had beheaded the commander. ’What rank are our commander’s anyways? Second Class? Or just third?’ Gine lifted up her gun, took aim at the clone’s head and blew it off. “Looks like we’re on our own.” She told Cisco. The big man nodded. “At a time like this I wish I had my gas mask.”

“Pffft, you don’t need that thing.” she shrugged in response, “You never know Gine.” he then scratched his head and asked, “Well, where to now? The commander for D group is dead, so that means we have no intelligence and no idea what is happening.” Gine shook her head, “So far we’ve found two clones I think we’re being invaded by Clones.” Cisco nodded and lifted his mighty blade onto his shoulder, “And they all got a fraction of her skill not to mention they all carry those Demon.” Gine sighed this was going to be a pain she just knew it.

“I think we have the best chance if we stick together. I doubt either one of us could take on one of these clones on our own.” Cisco nodded, “Logical.” Gine looked around the hallways surrounding the office. Unsure of which direction to choose. “Maybe we should head into the mess hall? It’s possible that some other local would have been able to make a stand there.” Cisco shrugged and started down that way. Gine didn’t need any encouraging to follow after him. He was constantly watching his back so she felt like something would pop up from behind them at any second.

“Okay, it looks clear this way!” she heard Cisco yell. She back peddled towards the sound of his voice until she arrived at the corner. She was making sure nothing was following them. She turned and followed after her partner down the corner and into the Mess Hall. It should have been somewhat she expected. It was called the mess hall after all but this was a massacre. Not a mess. There were at least seven Demon clones in here attacking some 3rd class saiyan that had all gathered together and were opening fire upon the clones.

One of the Clones got hit on the leg and then gunned down by another local. A clone was about to slice these 3rd class saiyan into pieces, but Cisco ran forward and held her massive long sword to defend against the falling Demon. Gine lifted up her own gun, she got a clone into her sight and tried to follow her despite her quick speed. She aimed a little ahead of where she was moving and fired. The bullet dug straight into her brain. Suddenly she felt a presence behind her and rolled forward. She felt some of her hair get sliced.

The woman slid on the ground and lifted her gun up again to defend against the Demon. Her gun was against her chest now, she wasn’t able to compete with the clone’s strength. Instead Gine swept the clone’s legs from out from underneath her using her own legs. The clone hit the ground and Gine jumped on top of her. She tried to use her Demon, but Gine shot her arm off. The clone began to struggle underneath Gine’s weight and knocked her gun out of her hands.

She was forced to pull out her boot knife and plunge it into the clone’s chest. She pulled the blade out and threw it at another clone. It hit her, well hit her sword. ’Unless it’s a coup de grace, I can’t seem to use my knife very well. ’ She thought quickly rolling over to grab her gun and fire at the clone that had deflected her knife. A random 3rd class saiyan gunned her down from behind, while Gine covered him by blowing off another clone’s head. Gine looked over at Cisco and saw him pin a clone against the wall with his sword. Cisco quickly maneuvered his blade and blocked an attack to his back before countering and smashing the clone with the broad side of his weapon.

“Sometimes I still wonder how you manage with that gigantic weapon.” She inquired of him. Cisco simply chuckled and gazed over at the dead Demon clones. “We took them out pretty fast. Good work guys.” Gine examined the five remaining third class saiyans that they had with them. They were all the new recruits from the days before. They were definitely scared. “Okay guys, listen up. We’re going to stick together and take these guys out. They aren’t the real thing guys. They are just clones.” She tried to explain to them. Some of them nodded and one of them even picked up a Demon. “Hey, you’re better off with a weapon. You have to be crazy good in order to use one of those things.” She told the saiyan.

“Okay Gine, we got some reinforcements, so what do we do now?” Gine wasn’t honestly sure how to answer Cisco’s question. All her life she had been told what to do, and now she needed to figure out what would be best to get these guys out alive “These guys can’t have gotten in here without tripping some alarm system I’m thinking this is an inside thing.” Gine looked at the five moons that she had gained as subordinates. “Okay, we’re going to head down into the labs and shut down whatever the crap the scientists are doing down there. There is no doubt that they are causing this.”

“Cisco! You take point, I’ll cover the back. I want you men to support Cisco with cover fire. You guys aren’t experienced enough to take on these clones, so just leave it to me and Cisco. Oh! And try not to shoot us please?” Everyone nodded, and Cisco took the lead like he had ordered. “Okay team, follow me.” Cisco folded her great long sword in half as she marched down the hallway. He held it across his chest, using it like some kind of shield. Gine on the other hand was back peddling again. She had the weirdest feeling like there was something behind them

She could hear her team, as they continued to open fire on enemies as they continued forward. Gine couldn’t spare a single look forward. She would just have to trust Cisco. She could hear the sounds of weapons clashing and gun firing. Suddenly one of the men screamed. Gine turned her head quickly and saw that a Sophia – clone had gotten past Cisco and was about to attack one of the moons. Gine opened fire and turned back to look at what was behind them. She was face to face with a Demon clone. She looked down at her chest to see that the clone had stabbed her through her heart. Gine shook her head and lifted her gun and shot the clone. ’It’s not my heart anyways’ she thought to herself.

Despite having a long sword through the chest, she was still alive. Gine put another bullet into her gun and shot the long sword and broke it. She put another bullet it and held the gun behind her back and shot the other side of the long sword out of her. This way she just a piece of metal sticking out of her chest instead of an entire sword. ’Dang it I knew I shouldn’t have taken my eyes off of our backs I need to make sure that we’re not going to be followed. I hope I don’t regret this. ’ Gine lifted her gun and pointed it at the ceiling behind them and opened fire so that the ceiling collapsed and blocked the path behind them.

“What’s going on?” one of the men with them asked, “Don’t look back.” Cisco told them. Now Gine could safely focus on what was occurring in front of them. Cisco clearly had her hands full Sophia-clones. It wasn’t so much that fact that they were that much more skilled than her, it was that she couldn’t use the full length of her sword. The suppressing fire from the moons did help though. They continued to press the clones back so that Cisco could deal with only one at a time. Gine calmly lifted her armor up and fired a shot that put holes into two of the clone’s chests.

“Eat that mother buzzards.” She told them quietly. The group continued to press forward, the skipped the elevators, and instead used the stairs to make their way down into the Yaid laboratory. “What the faux?” Gine heard Cisco announce as she opened the doors. She walked into the room as well and saw something horrific. Demon clones turning more people into Demon Clones. She watched a local get dragged and get put inside some kind of oil inducement tube. The clones then activated it and the man would slowly change into a copy of Demon. “OPEN FIRE!”

Cisco drew her blade while Gine began to unload bullet after bullet into the mass of Demon clones. She could tell the newly formed ones against the ones that had been made for a while based on the fact that the ones that had been formed already carried Demon, while the others didn’t. ’Where are they even getting all of their gear?’ She questioned mentally. She lifted up her gun and leveled the barrel with the head of another clone and blew her head off. The five mooch local that they had with them blocked the doorway and began to unload clip after clip of suppressing fire into the crowd of clones.

Gine was surprised that they all managed to survive. ’Looks like we just cleaned up the last of them here’ Gine pressed forward and patted Cisco on the back. “We did it.” she shook her head, “I’m not so sure. I think we need to blow this place just to be safe.” Gine nodded sadly. “So much for the soft drink fund.” She muttered to him. She chuckled and turned to her. When she finally saw the blade sticking out of her chest her face went pale again ”Gine!” she gasped pointing to her chest. “Cisco. Cisco.” She put her hands on his shoulders. “Calm down. My heart is still beating, and I haven’t lost any blood. ”

Cisco took a deep breath. “Okay we need to get you to the hospital.” Gine nodded, “Okay, but first.” Gine pulled out her cell phone and dialed Yaid HQ. “3rd class saiyan Gine Reporting, D Group HQ has been compromised, requesting extraction and Air strike.” The woman on the other side of the phone asked, “What is happening over there?” Gine sighed before saying, “Enemies have taken over the compound, please provide Extraction for 7 locals.” The man on the other side seemed to think to himself before complying.

“Roger that, Helicopters will arrive at the helipad on top of the building in fifteen minutes. If you are not there within five minutes of arrival, the helicopters will take off. I don’t need to say what happens after wards do I?” Gine shook her head, even though the woman probably wouldn’t be able to see her do so. “No ma’am.” Gine sighed once more and hang up. “To the roof.” She told her team. She had half the team go with her one elevator, and the others with Cisco on the next trip. They reached the helipad within moments, but then they realized their folly.

“Okay we have to defend this area if we want to get out of this alive. Take positions around the Helipad.” Gine inserted another bullet into the feed ramp of her gun and shoved it through with the bolt. “Okay, let’s hold on for just a few minutes!” Gine announced to the team. The five guys nodded, while Cisco simply spat. She unfolded her blade, releasing it to its full glory and held it in front of her warily. “Gine you better survive.” she told him. He looked at her and beamed a smile. “Don’t worry about such stupid things. We’re all going to make it. ”

The clone began to emerge. Cisco and Gine quickly proved their level of experience especially Gine. ’If my heart rate increases too much I can damage myself due to the blade that’s stuck in my chest. I just have to stay calm and make the shots ’ She initiated a breathing excursive just for this purpose and lifted the barrel of her weapon and started leveling it with enemies before firing. “I’m out of bullets!” Screamed one of the men. “Just stand your ground! Don’t move! We’ll be okay!” Easy for her to say when she was killing two clones with a single shot.

Cisco ducked underneath an attack and smashed a clone into the ground. He spun and swung, slicing seven clones at once. Cisco took one gaze at Gine and the five local and he nodded to himself. He lifted her blade high up into the air and slammed it into the concrete. A huge pit was created between the Helipad and the spot where Cisco had smashed it into existence. As the Helicopter arrived, they had to drag Gine on board as she watched in tears as Cisco stood alone smiling in a crowd of Demon clones. “You better live Gine! You hear me?” he yelled at her as the helicopter took off.

An airship soon followed the helicopter. It swooped down and something large was dropped off of it and onto the barracks. The entire thing ignited in a fantastic fireball the likes which Gine had never seen in Dawn Town before. Tears streamed down her face as one of her longest running comrades was killed she thought she could see him form among the flames, but that was just her mind creating illusions Because of Gine’s crying she had forgotten all about her breathing techniques and stared with wide open eyes as there was a sharp pain in her heart.

She was surrounded by the five local 3rd class saiyan who looked down upon her with mixed looks of sympathy and respect. Gine’s breathing began to slow her eyes flittered blackness. ’This place seems very familiar. ’ Said a voice in her mind. ’It’s too bad you don’t have any good childhood memories it would have been nice if you could have shared some with me. ’ Gine wanted to shake her head no, “I It’s not my fault” ’I know it’s not Gine. ’ The voice continued to say in a very sympathetic voice. ’Don’t feel too bad about it. ’

’But maybe your childhood wasn’t as bad as you thought it was. ’ “What do you mean? How could you even say that? Do you know what it’s like to live every day in fear? Do you know what it’s like to be a woman in a world run by men?” ’No why don’t you show me?’ “How am I supposed to do that?” ’Just remember it, and I’ll remember it with you. ’ Gine brought up all of her old memories and fears. It was almost like she was reliving the entire thing all over again. Every now and then the voice would make a comment about something. ’That’s your mother?’ It would ask. ’She is very pretty. ’ “Who are you?” ’What? You mean you forgot about me already? That makes me sad. ’ “Seriously who are you?” ’Fine I’ll give you a hint. Starts with a “C”’

Gine’s eyes popped wide open, “CISCO!” She screamed at the top of her lungs. A doctor placed her hand upon her chest and pressed her back down onto the bed. “Take it easy.” she told her. Gine looked at her uncomfortably, she didn’t even really seem to be paying attention to her. “What happened?” She questioned the man. “Well I shouldn’t have to fill you in on much since your men are the ones who told me most of what happened” she looked around the room and picked up a clipboard and began to write down information she copied from various monitors.

“They said that the D Group base was attacked by Demon look alike. You found those five guys, and you and another local are pretty much responsible for their lives. You fought down to the labs, wiped it clean and then moved to the roof for extraction. Cisco was his name? They said that he sacrificed himself so that you all could get on the helicopter and escape. Afterwards, your men claimed that you passed out.” The man walked over and hung the clip board off of a string on her bed post. “That’s all?” The Doctor shook his head.

“Of course not. Seldom is what you’re told the whole truth correct?” he tapped the clipboard he had been writing on, “Listen Gine, I know you’ve had a health issue before since you’re a saiyan and all, but this time we couldn’t find a suitable heart for you.” Gine looked down at her chest, she opened her shirt so she could see the scar on her chest fresh. “So?” Gine was asking. “We gave you a mechanical heart.” The man told her. “You’ll need to be careful about what you eat. This machine can’t deal with clogged up arteries that well, but as long as you eat a steady and healthy diet, it should be fine. ”

“Is that all?” Gine questioned, this time hopeful that it indeed was true. “Well not exactly.” The man walked over towards a cabinet and pulled out a mirror. “This isn’t a hospital Gine.” Gine looked up at this fellow with confusion as he approached her with this mirror. “This is a laboratory.” he held up the mirror and Gine looked at the demonic eye in her right eye socket in shock. “You’ll find that if you close your left eye, you’ll be able to see with extremely acute vision.” The lab technician was explaining to her. Gine indeed tested what she had said and closed her left eye. Everything became sharper clearer.

“I suggest that you keep this eye closed a majority of the day though, since it’s still a new technology that we’ve been working with, you can possibly damage yourself with prolonged usage.” Gine nodded and closed her right eye, opening up her left. “Oh and you also might have noticed that you will no longer need to use a scope. Your eye has the ability to see clearly” Gine sighed and looked around the room. “Do I have to pay for all of this?” The scientist nodded, “Yes. Since this eye is experimental, we wanted to test it on someone with your abilities. That’s pretty much why we saved your life. So if you could just pay the price for the eye, we’ll provide you with whatever medicine you need after this point.”

Gine sighed and nodded, “How much is this costing me?” She questioned the man, who opened up her wallet and pulled out her receipt for a demon eye, “2300 zeni. Don’t worry, you don’t have to transfer the money, it’s already been taken care of.” Gine laid back on her little hospital bed in defeat. “You guys you know how annoying this is to me right?” The scientist shrugged, “Would you rather be dead?” She shook her head no. “But you could have at least asked for my consent before screwing with my eyes.” The scientist placed the clipboard back onto her bed post. “By the way, due to such high commendations from not only your previous commanders, but also those five guys who claim to be under your command, local has decided to promote you to second Class at least temporarily.”

For some Reason Gine wasn’t even happy. She had been ranked up to Second Class at what cost? At Cisco’s life? Was that the price? They kept Gine in the lab for a few more days until they decided at last that she was ready for life again. She had missed Cisco’s official funeral, so she traveled down to the cemetery alone and sat by the grave. She pulled a bottle of soda from the sack she had brought with her and poured it onto the grave. “How does it taste?” She asked at last. Tears were streaming down her face. One of her friends had died Gine had to admit to herself that this was the only time that she actually felt sad that someone on her team had died.

“I’m kind of a monster aren’t I?” She questioned herself. The woman stood up, satisfied with her time spent with Cisco’s grave she began to walk away from it quite suddenly a monstrous blade dug itself into the ground in front of her. “It’s pretty fun being dead.” Said a voice. She turned around and saw no one. “You should try it some time.” Cisco hopped off of a tree branch and onto the ground below. “Miss me?” Gine ran over and hugged her. “Asshole.” She said through her tears. “Yeah I don’t even know who they buried Believe me I tried to convince them that I was alive still.”

Gine looked up at him with a large smile on her face. “I thought you were a goner.” he shrugged and then looked down at her, “I thought you were a goner hey what’s wrong with your eye?” Gine sighed and opened her eye to reveal the demon eye hiding beneath her eye lid. “Holy!” Cisco jumped back in surprise. “Is it infected or something?” she asked her, Gine shook her head no. “Yeah that helicopter dropped us off at a laboratory apparently and the only reason those scientists save my life was so that I could be a test dummy for this demon eye.”

Cisco nodded slowly, “Dang it I shouldn’t have let you go off on your own.” Gine shook her head, “I didn’t have anything to do with any of that. I passed out on the helicopter and woke up like this.” Cisco nodded and pointed towards a soda machine sitting on the side walk nearby. “Hey Gine want to have a soda?” She nodded, “I’d love to.”

A story always begins with a beginning. Perhaps it may not be grand or overly spectacular, but it always fulfills its purpose: To introduce the world. So here we paint a picture, a long wavy line springs to life upon our portrait, on one side floods a deep sea blue and on the other a tan shore line. Upon the shoreline buildings rise up out of the ground and stand proudly into the air, and people begin to flood the streets and the beach. Ships appear in the bay and cars on the roads. This entire place takes a look similar to that of a sunny beach of Florida filled with lovely dark tanned natives.

There is a sudden sound that breaks the lovely silence over this peaceful place in the horizon a helicopter’s blades cut the air past the pilot and into the cargo hold sat a woman. She was still young by all rights, but she had a look of experience to her youthful eyes. If you had to take a lucky guess, she probably is close to her thirties by this point in time, but she is definitely still in her prime. She adorned herself with bright fluorescent blue, ranging from the highlights in her hair to the fishnet shirt underneath her sleeveless purple turtleneck sweater.

She shifts uncomfortably and leans back against a crate inside of the helicopter. Her blue eyes mark her as a local. A warrior. You confirm this fact with the way she wears the smell of gun oil like any other woman would wear her perfume. At her side, leaning against her shoulder with the barrel aimed upwards was a bolt action gun. There were several bullets in a mini bandolier near the feed ramp. This is definitely a custom gun, the ring hammer awaiting to pound out any bullets is solid proof.

Across from her sat another local. He had a similar look to her, even if her face was covered with a visor his eyes revealed about as much as hers had. His wardrobe consisted of a long black coat and a plain black T-shirt. On the ground next to him was a long sword that was ridiculous in proportions: If the blade wasn’t folded in half it would have probably been twice her height, and was easily as wide. His gaze met hers and for a minute they just watched one another with indifference. Then quite suddenly the man raised her hand “Rock.”

The girl raised her hand as well, a slight smile forming upon her full, and very fluorescent lips. “Paper” She added to this man’s statement of rock. They both raised their hands and lowered them quickly, simultaneously they shouted, “Scissors!” The woman had a fist out, while the man had a fist with two fingers drew, the forefinger and middle. “Rock beats Scissors.” The woman laughed, giving her ‘scissors’ a light thump with her ‘rock’ The man shook her head, refusing to accept defeat, “That’s just because you have sharp eyes or something.” he playfully glared at the woman. “I wonder if you can even predict my calls. Well Gine?”

“Puff. I picked rock last round too.” Cisco looked at her inquisitively as if expecting an answer. ’Are you kidding? I actually have to answer him? Bled. ’ Gine sighed, “I figured that you wouldn’t expect me to pick rock again, so I picked it again.” Cisco shook his head and set up straight, “I knew you were a sniper, I didn’t know you were a general too.” Gine rolled her eyes, “Seriously, we should play chess sometime.” She replied to her with an overly sarcastic tone. It suddenly got very quiet in the helicopter, as quiet as was possible with the noise of the chopper’s blades slicing the air.

Gine stared at Cisco, and he back at her they both broke out into laughter. “Gad, we’ve been in this helicopter too long.” Gine tilted her head towards the cock pit, “Hey! How long until we reach Dawn?” The piloted tilted her head slightly so that she could project her voice back towards Gine and Cisco, “E. T. A. Fifteen minutes.” Gine nodded and then slouched much how Cisco was. “I haven’t been to This one town in forever.” Cisco raised an eyebrow and leaned forward, “Oh? You’ve been here before?” Gine kicked his boot with hers.

“Born and raised there.” He told her, “Of course I’ve been there before.” Cisco shrugged, “How was I supposed to know?” he got up and walked over towards the cock pit, examining the city in the distance. “It’s not like I’m a mind reader.” Gine shook her head, she wanted to add another witty comeback but she just didn’t feel up to it for some reason. She wasn’t sure why, because Cisco and her trying to prove they were smarter than each other, word wise, was something that they did together on a regular basis. It was like a game they were always playing.

They were always playing games, she and he. Maybe she was becoming scared yes that’s what that absurd knot in her stomach must have been. Gine was scared that she would be alone again. For as long as Gine could remember, she had always been the one to walk away. Sure she had had her close calls, for example the time she had a clawed arm stuck through her chest, oh and she could never forget the time a helicopter crashed on top of her. That one hurt a bunch too. She also had been shot in the head.

The list went on. Every time though, Gine got up and came home, even if her companions hadn’t. She was constantly being assigned new team mates over and over It didn’t bother her so much that she was practically the only woman, but it seemed that she was always alone. ’Is Cisco going to die too?’ She wondered looking at her with pity. ’It’s not like I love the guy or anything, but it’s just that, she has a pretty good record so far for being around me. ’ Gine hung her head and stared at the helicopter floor.

’I can’t last forever. ’

’Oh? Doesn’t the same apply for me? I’ve had my second chance maybe I should start counting lives at this point. ’ The local pressed her lips together as she found comfort, oddly enough, in the sound of the chopper’s blade’s slicing through the air. ’I could say the same thing to myself how much longer do I have in this career? I could die on any quest just as well as the people I’m with. We could easily all die together. ’ Gine wondered what would be worse, ’Being lonely? Or Dying. ’ They were tough choices to be certain.

She raised her head and took a deep breath. Cisco would definitely make it. She wouldn’t let him die. That was a fact. This was her determination. Gine felt it when the helicopter ceased to move forward and instead began to move downward. She looked over towards the Cock pit and saw Cisco grabbing onto the side of the arch that led to where the pilot was sitting. The helicopter touched down. Cisco walked back over towards Gine and continued for a few more paces before throwing the side door open. The sound of the helicopter’s blade’s quickly overwhelmed the cargo hold.

‘GOOD LUCK! I’LL BE HERE WHEN YOU GET BACK!” The pilot yelled to her and Cisco over the sound of rotating blades. Gine nodded and gave her a “thumbs up” before following Cisco who had promptly hopped out of the helicopter. The duo made their way across the helipad as the chopper’s blades began to slow down and rotate with less velocity. “These people don’t look like they have been seeing monsters.” This was Gine’s comment concerning the people of her Hometown, the sunny coast. That was why they had been called in anyways. To deal with a monster threat well they were here now, and yet the people were hardly cowering behind locked doors.

If Gine weren’t a local she might have understood their feelings still, but after leaving home to join local so long again she felt like she no longer understood this people. ’Well what do I care anyways? It’s not like I have any friends here. I’m just a saiyan now.’ Gine felt a sharp pang of mental pain. She didn’t really mean any of the words she had thought, but she was bitter over the last time she had been here. It really burdened her heart that everyone here that she knew and loved was nonexistent.

“Okay, I guess we got to check in with the Mayor’s office before we proceed.” Cisco said to Gine it was a suggestion really, but with no prior knowledge it was a pretty good idea. Even Gine didn’t have a clue what kind of monster would attack Dawn. “You’re probably right.” The people on the streets didn’t seem to excited that Gine or Cisco were here. They looked sort of disappointed. “I bet it’s because we’re not celebrities or something c’mon, not everyone can be famous.” Cisco commented. Gine simply nodded her head and continued walking. She still remember the streets well enough to find the Mayor’s office without directions, and led Cisco there without much of a problem.

“Did you ever come here when you were living here?” Gine shook her head in response, “No, but this place isn’t the biggest city ~ you’re bound to run into this place eventually.” Gine replied, examining the meager mayor’s office. It was small, one story tall, but it tried to play off some amount of grandeur with marble steps and marble pillars. There was a clock over the door to the office. “I wonder if This one town has a fat tub of lard for a mayor, like Dawn Town does.” Gine raised an eyebrow, “Dawn Town has a mayor?” Cisco began to laugh heartily, “That’s exactly my point.”

They headed inside, pushing the double doors open and marching towards the secretary’s desk. Of course it was a woman. She looked over her glasses at the pair. “You a local?” She asked. Gine simply nodded and let the woman study their uniforms until she was satisfied. “Alright. Come with me.” The woman stood up and led them through a series of hallways until she came to a stop at a particular door with a plaque that read ‘Mayor’s Office. ’ ’doesn’t this guy have a name?’ Gine wondered to herself. “Mr. Mayor? The locals are here.” The secretary opened the door wide enough for the man sitting at the desk inside of the room to have a view of Gine and Cisco.

“Oh good, send them in please.” The secretary only turned her head to Gine and Cisco and moved slightly out of the way so they could enter. “Oh my.” The mayor said almost as soon as the two had entered the room. Gine sat down so she would look less intimidating to the poor fellow but Cisco was oblivious of the fact that sweat seemed to be pouring down this man’s face when the room’s A/C unit had small icicles hanging off of the vents. “So, you’re from local? They only sent us Third class saiyans?” he sounded disappointed.

Cisco looked over to Gine and gave her a wink. Yup they had just been talking about that. “Maybe if you’re lucky we’ll die and they’ll send someone famous.” Cisco told the mayor. The sad thing was that the mayor looked hopeful that Gine and Cisco truly would die. Gine rolled her eyes. ’Yeah just another tub of lard like in Dawn Town. ’ She thought. “Anyways, tell us what the problem is.” Cisco questioned the mayor. The Mayor sighed and laid his head down on his desk. “Bodies have been turning up around the city” Gine and Cisco looked at one another before they turned back to the Mayor.

“Bodies? If this is a serial killer, you should have just sent the local sentry units to deal with him.” The Mayor shook his head, “The autopsy results report that each victim, after being killed, was implanted with a number of egg sacks into their bodies.” Gine winced what kind of monster laid eggs inside of dead people? It was bad enough that it was killing them. “That’s sick.” Cisco told the mayor. The man nodded, “Excuse my French, but the people here are scared shitless.” Gine raised an eyebrow, “It didn’t seem like that way when we were coming here.”

Gine dealt with the sound for the entire trip. She sat by a window with the armor between her legs as land and ocean past by. This one town it was the place her friend kiko had grown up. Looking back on her past she knew all of the sniper positions that she figured would be useful to her. There were certain buildings she had in mind She remembered seeing them from her window when Mr. Jalapeno had come to tuck her into bed at night. ”Aww get that out from between your legs.” John said, referring to her gun,

”It makes me feel inadequate.” he told Gine. ”Psh shut up J.” she laughed it off, using the name she had given him. One of the guys nudged John in the ribs, ”Hey, what was all that moaning last night, eh ‘J’? You two seem really close lately.” John laughed heartily over the sound of the chopper blades slicing through the air. ”I gave Gine a good pounding last night, she couldn’t keep it in!” she exclaimed proudly.

”H” She didn’t know what to say Her feelings were really hurt. She was on the verge of tears how could her treat her like that? She wasn’t some cheap two cent whore she could pick up off the street. ”How dare you?” She managed to put out. She turned her head from Jonathan this was taking too far. WAY too far. She looked out the window to keep the fact that she was crying a secret. She was soundless as the tears streamed down her face She could see John’s reflection in the window ”Gine ” she said, reaching out to her. Her head graced her shoulder, she knocked it off. She sat back in her seat the insensitive was trying to figure out what had she done. ”Hahha, you made her cry.” One of the other guys was saying. Gine wiped her tears. ”Shut the hell up.” She said without a single drop of emotion.

The tears were going down her face, but she was stone now. The rest of the trip was made in silence. When they were nearing the drop point, the pilot looked over her shoulder and began to give them instructions. ”When we near the drop point, Make sure your lines are secure. Attach this buckle to your belts before you jump out of the chopper.” The co pilot gave a slight demonstration. She showed them all how to buckle the line to their belts. This was standard procedure for drops as far as Gine could remember. No one questioned the man showing them the instructions. They never did. They had to be shown since there were new people on board. Everyone nodded at the completion of the demonstration. The co pilot moved back to the front and all the Members of D Group buckled their belts to the lines. ”One at a time.” John instructed them.

It took a full minute for the Helicopter to reach the clearing, the vehicle lowered a bit and the locals began to jump out one by one. Once they had hit the ground, they unbuckled their belts and the line zipped back into the helicopter. It finally came to be Gine’s turn. She hopped out of the helicopter, feeling the wind blow through her hair as she zoomed down the strip. She unbuckled the line and looked up as it whipped itself back up into the helicopter. Zzzpp! The Helicopter took off, returning to a higher elevation and heading towards the closest YAID helipad. They were on the ground now They couldn’t move into This one town without Mr. Jalapeno knowing. Gine knew this her adopted father had always boasted of such things to her.

By her estimation she must have been at least three kilometers away from the port. She looked to John for orders since she seemed to be the senior officer of D group. The fellow looked around at her men but especially at her. She saw him wanting to say something. She said nothing. “Alright gents, here’s the plan: we’ll separate and enter the port individually at different points.” he squatted down and began to draw in the dirt. It was a crude map, but it was good enough to work with. They certainly would have to make do. “Once inside, each unit will proceed to le target, Gine you will take a sniper position on this building – our informants tell us that they are probably going to be expecting us to utilize certain positions as sniper points.” she pointed at several locations on the map, indicating the “certain points”

”I believe there to be a mole in our command, so that’s why our quest is going to operate a tad different from what we have been ordered.” everyone nodded. They all understood. This was dangerous Business. Gine kicked the dirt map on the ground and they all began to move without any orders to do so. She made her way along the coast; similarly each member of D group went their own ways. All with a common goal. Gine climbed up a cliff side. Her purpose wasn’t to find a way into this one town but it was to find a quiet place to be for a moment. She sat in a small cave like structure feeling betrayed by everything.

‘J’ had abused her, her feelings betrayed her, and her loyalties seemed confused. What was she going to do? Would she really kill her own father, even if she was only an adoptive one at that? She dropped her armor and curled up in this place where no one could see her. No one would see her cry here. ”You’re such a girl.” she told herself as the tears broke down her face. What was she supposed to be? Yaid wanted a local. ‘J’ and the rest of the guys wanted a woman. Either could have ruined her life if they had wanted to. She could have just as easily been a whore or dead on a whim of either. She had been lucky though. She managed to survive this long she managed to make it this far. Was this the point where she stopped living for others and lived for herself? If that was the case, then it was the selfish path she would take.

Despite all of her confusion, she was determined to kill Mr. Jalapeno herself. She recalled being a small girl and saying her goodbyes to the man who had caused her so much trouble in the past. He had funded her trip to proper society. Sent her there on a luxury Yacht, an experience she would never have again. She cleared her eyes of tears and took a deep breath. She checked her cell phone for the time she was going to be late. She had spent too long! She got up and grabbed her gun, slinging it over her shoulders. She pulled a bullet from its carton and put it in her mouth. She made her way through the beautiful beach of this coast. The waves crashed so softly against the sand it was perfect.

The calm always came before the storm. Where else could you find such beauty on this land underneath the sun though? Dawn Town didn’t have this beauty, but this place was it really beautiful either? It wore a mask that hid its true wickedness from the world. Wasn’t it more evil to hide what you really are? Wasn’t evil that posed as good the most false? She needed a better reason to kill her target a better reason it wasn’t good enough for her to simply kill the man because the mercenaries said so.

Wasn’t it enough? She had been given a second chance at life. This was her second, second chance. There was This one town in the distance. She moved forward in all stealth she could manage. She pulled herself over a wall and dropped down onto the street of the beautiful port. She was at peace. She remembered playing in this very street with all the other bastards. Of all of them, she was the only girl that didn’t end up fucked up. Of all of them, she was the only one to make it to Dawn Town. Of all of them, it was she alone whom had become a member of local. An elite, if you will. She was above the common of this city. Of all of them, she was the only one to escape certain destitution.

It just so happened that when she peaked around the corner of the alley she saw on of the boys she had seen last time she was here. “Gine?” he asked, ”Gine! Oh my god it’s so good to see you again! “She snapped his neck. He had let down his guard and now he was dead with a quick flick. Thump. His name had been Sean. What had she done? She pressed a soft hand at her face before dragging her body into the alley. She checked the street for anyone else before proceeding towards her position. She opened the door to a conveniently empty building. The local made her way up the stairs to the roof and set up shop there. She set her armor on the ledge of the roof and looked into the scope. Where were they? There was no sign of any action taking place.

If the other locals had at least made it into town then there should at least be some – the door behind her opened. She jumped and pointed her armor at the shadow moving out from the stairs. “Gine?” The voice called to her. It was Mr. Jalapeno herself He was in her sights. pull the trigger damn you. The armor shook but did not fire as Mr. Jalapeno made an unconcerned approach. She completely ignored the fact that she was pointing a gun at her. ”My favorite! Welcome!” he said, pushing her armor to the side so she could embrace her. ”I’m glad you were a little late.” The man stroked her hair lovingly. ”My men would have shot you with the others ” he told her, his face looked pained. he turned to the stairs and pointed.

She looked and saw several of Mr. Jalapeno’s thugs bring bodies up the stairs They dropped the members of D group onto the ground in front of her. She couldn’t bare to look at all of their faces she turned her head away. Jalapeno ran her hand down her cheek. ”But, shhh. It’ll be okay now. You’re home.” she told her. ”Sorry but I Have to kill you.” She said, moving away from her and pointing the gun at her. His face looked unfazed. ”I’d gladly die for you dear heart.” he held out his arms willing to take a bullet from her weapon. ”What about Yaid?” Gine cried. Jalapeno took the armor gently away from her and handed it to one of the faceless cronies there.

”I dealt with them didn’t I?” he said pointing at the dead locals. Gine still wouldn’t look. Some of those people had been her friends. She was mad about their deaths but this was her good buddy how could you hate someone who had done so much for you? She was just guessing that Mr. Jalepeno was the iron beast due to him being fully dressed in iron. Perhaps that’s why it was so hard to kill this son of a bitch. ”Come on, come see Kiko’s family!” ”How many ?” She gulped to herself. ”She has 7 brothers and 5 sisters now!” Jalapeno said. ”Kiko’s the oldest tone now! They are all dying to know what their sister has been up to!” Jalapeno took Gine’s arm and linked her arm with his. He guided her down the stairs and through the streets back to Kiko’s first home.

She had been sat down aside Mr. Jalapeno at a table as a feast was laid out before them. Her friend’s mother walked into the room and sat beside Mr. Jalapeno she looked very happy and pregnant. ”Again ?” Her mother laughed at the response and shook her head, ”What do you mean again? Your friend’s a bastard herself you know.” The woman told her. That hurt. Gine flinched at the pain those words gave her. ”This one is Jalapeno’s.” She said. She leaned close to the man ”I finally have a man” She had had plenty of men, at least that was what Gine’s cruel thoughts told her. Gine took a moment to meet her friend’s new siblings the ones she had left had all aged several years. The brothers had become thugs mostly and the sisters they had become whores.

Why had only she been given this chance? Why did Jalapeno keep them all around? ”Lets eat!” Called Mr. Jalapeno when the feast had finally been set up. Gine’s dish was very fine cuisine. She had received a plate of Lemon peppered salmon with potatoes and beans as sides. She also had a basket of small butter rolls that were centered around a small bowl of cinnamon cream cheese spread. Even the cutlery was overly fine, it was all made of gold and studded with rubies. A little gaudy.

She had never eaten so well before though. She held out her cup and immediately it was filled with Mr. Jalapeno’s very strange orange based wine. It was very sweet with just a right amount of sourness to it. It also gave her a very satisfying buzz. She had never been so happy in her life she thought. Why was she so happy? What was wrong here? She couldn’t stop drinking and enjoying herself with her friend’s family. Everyone got up from the feast and began to go about their own doings this wasn’t where she wanted to be.

Now that she visited, she realized that she knew Kiko didn’t deserve this lifestyle. Gine pulled out the spare gun she had gotten from John a few days before. She walked into the hallway and shot her friend’s father, he died with a peaceful look on his face. His words echoed in her head. Her face was a stone as she made her escape. As she made her way down the hall she saw her friend’s mother. The woman was holding Gine’s armor to her own head. ”Why Gine?” she asked before pulling the trigger. Gine flinched as it happened. She ran over to the woman and shook her head angrily. ”I should ask you the same question” she said to the dead woman. She picked up her armor and threw it over her shoulder.

”Get HER! She killed the boss!” Some men screamed. They began to chase after her, firing whenever they caught so much as a glimpse of her around the corner. Gine pulled around a corner and waited for the thugs to catch up. When they did, she popped out and opened fire on them. Bam bam bam! Three shots, two hits. One dead. The two left continued to run after her. She ran into more security and quickly ducked left down another hallway. There was a window at the end of the way. She jumped through the window and flew through the air.

Her feet hit the concrete just in time to see the heads of many of the thugs look at the window. She turned and began to fire at them as she ran. ”This is 3rd class saiyan Gine.” The woman yelled into her cell phone. ”Target eliminated, D Group down. Moving towards rendezvous point.” She was running from building to building, taking what little cover she could until she hit the city limits. ”Roger that Gine, we’ll be there in five.” The pilot’s voice called back to her through the phone. She felt a bullet eat its way into her arm. She winced at the pain, but she had already known pain.

Emotionally she had taken the most pain possible. Physically she had already died before. Twice actually. That pretty much said she was tough as any machine could be. Her muscle toned body carried her onward and onward as she returned fire while she was running. A man walking down the street died she had nothing to do with this. She had been cornered though. She was at the clearing now, and yet some thugs had still managed to follow her. John’s weapon was out of ammo so she tossed it and pulled out her sniper gun. She took aim and tried to keep the men pinned down. She shot one in the arm, and killed another with a head shot.

”Damn it” She said to herself for almost no reason when the helicopter came and unloaded a successful round of suppressive minigun fire. Gine ran towards the chopper and grabbed onto the side, one of the people inside pulled her in as it took off. ’I’m never going to come back here again. ’she told herself as she watch It fade into the distance. When she had finally made it back to base in Dawn Town, she had relayed most of the quest to the brass. Some informant in the mercenaries had been caught and was being put through trial Gine couldn’t cry though. So many of the people she had learned to love had died. It was better this way. It really was.

That’s what she had convinced herself. ”Good work 3rd class saiyan.” Commander Justin was telling her. ”You deserve an award.” Gine pulled her armor on Justin. ”What’s the meaning of this?” Gine looked at her angrily as each of D Group’s face flashed in her eyes. “‘J’ said there was a mole in the brass. You’re the mole.” She told him. ”Now Gine I had nothing to do with D group being ambushed at this one town” Gine thwacked him with the butt of the weapon. Justin hit the floor. She cocked the gun. ”You bastard. You killed all my friends’ family in the same quest.” Justin smiled. ”Actually you’re the bastard, and you killed your friends’ family.” Justin pulled out his own gun from his shirt. Gine shot him in the heart.

Gine adjusted her awkward helmet and breathed a sigh. It was her first official quest after the incident with her friend's sister. Not the little dinky things they had been sending her on such as patrolling the slums and dealing with a bomb. No, this was a real quest, and she had almost forgotten what it felt like. The adrenaline was washing through her veins and she could hardly keep still, her hand reached over her shoulder and gripping tightly the hilt of her sword.

“Calm down yo,” said the driver of the truck, “it’s an easy quest you don’t need to get your panties in a bunch.” “You don’t understand,” said Gine to the red-headed Spec Ops who had been sent to watch over her on her quest, “this is the first chance I have to show the company I’m still trust worthy. To prove myself once more. I can’t blow it. ”

The Spec Ops made a short noise before saying, “you realize I’m not allowed to help if things go to shit right?” “I understand,” said Gine smiling at the ground, “you’re here for observation only, to make sure I don’t get out of line again.”“That’s right. ” The truck stopped and Gine burst out of the back and looked around. “Go get her yo!” called the Spec Ops and Gine nodded and ran into the forest towards Dawn. It was well after the war, and though the Dawns still hated the Yaid, they were less likely to attack, which was good. Gine walked into the town and searched around for the woman that was described in her debriefing; black hair, glasses, would be with a young girl. Gine turned and walked back out of the town thinking to herself, so far, so good.

An ominous oppression filled the air as a young girl walked through the crowd she had seen her good friend. She spotted her and hid herself for a time. She wished to know what she was doing here in her new home. Likely she is after us Serah. Serah growled at her other mind and ignored the voices of the dead as they babbled at her. When she spotted the girl she very nearly burst from hiding and struck her down then and there. However a truck pulled into view and a helmet clad male exited and introduced herself to the mother. Serah listened carefully as she was briefed.

The woman smiled at Gine. “Ah I am glad to meet you. Your quest is simple you protect me from harm while the experiment is taking place. Once its over you will permit me time to leave then you may withdraw its very simple.” She placed a hand on the little girls head and half pushed her towards a teddy bear half way between her and Serah’s hiding place. The woman then cleared her voice. “I know you are out there Serah come into view so your friend can greet you.” Serah snarled but did as she was told. Whether the massive weapon or the fact that Serah held murder in her eyes the crowd quickly found other places to hang out.

The woman smiled at Serah and her buddy. “There is Friend’s good girl now Serah kill that little bitch and drink her hearts blood for Friend.” The girl stared at Serah frozen in fear her eyes wide. I have a better idea Serah kill that bitch that made us this way. Serah was locked in place as the two powerful compulsions were laid on her. “Quickly Serah you don’t wish to keep Friend waiting. If you aren’t quick then friend will give you a pleasant spinal tap and four hundred lashes with the nail studded whip rather then the plain whip.” You must do this quickly Serah or the moment will pass. Hurry and we can be free forever. Serah clutched her head and bent double. The words quickly and hurry echoed with everything else in her head.

After what seemed like an eternity she snapped and with eyes void of any color she screamed in a bloody fury at the sky before snatching up her buddy. She rocketed forward blades to the side as she ran. It was in this instant a choice would have to be made. The local had time to save one person. If the girl was not moved then the side of her throat would be ripped open. The girl would die after two minutes of agony and abject terror. However; if the girl was moved then the stunned woman that was under her protection would be opened up like a freshly butchered hog. Death again would not be instant. It was the moment of absolute silence and stillness as Serah hung there and everything around Gine stopped.

Gine smiled and nodded but unseen by the woman her eye twitched at the word ‘experiment. ’ she looked down at the girl that was pushed and watched as the woman called someone out. A young girl appeared with death in her eyes and Gine could not help but gasp. Her gaze returned to the woman, her eyes filled with horror at her words. Her hands clenched into fists at how she thought it was unfair, her first quest after the incident and things had already gone to shit, just as Serah had warned.

As the girl let out a scream of rage Gine reacted quickly, jumping and snatching the young girl into her arms. She turned in midair so that her shoulder hit the ground and she rolled back onto her feet, drawing hi weapon from her back and getting ready to fight until a burst of blood flared out in front of her and the woman she had been sent to protect was gutted like a pig. Gine turned away and also hid the girl’s eyes from the horrible sight as she muttered, “looks like I failed the quest. ”

She couldn’t bring herself to feel regret towards letting the woman die. She had held ill-will towards the science department ever since they had the gal to experiment on her friend's sister. She was still loyal to the company, she could not deny that, but if the science department were to suddenly lose funding she would be as happy as anyone ever had been.

“Are you alright?” she whispered to the young girl before turning, holding the girl’s head against her shoulder so that she would not see the gore as she looked at the girl. Gine’s weapon was still in her hand, the boy’s weapon still in his. It was dead around the two of them for a moment, as Gine waited for whatever was going to happen next. She hoped it would not be difficult, and she hoped she would not have to kill the girl if it came to a fight.

The young girl wrapped her arms around Gine’s neck and whimpered and she cooed softly, “it’s alright honey, you just stay right here like that. Whatever you do, don’t open your eyes, don’t look. ”
The feelings that stirred through Serah as her blades cleaved open her friend were mixed. On the one hand she was sad that it had been that easy to kill the one that had made her suffer so much. On the other she was happy that she was once and for all free of her control. So she turned and oddly there was very little blood on her. Aside from her weapon that is. Serah smiled a crooked smile she had just murdered her own friend who lay in a pool of her own blood gasping in pain. Finally she shuddered and died. Well now I was not sure you would kill her. Serah ignored the voice.

Serah let her gaze fall on the little girl that seemed to be in shock. She had been rescued and she was actually glad since she wished to kill her friend and not her. Her gaze finally broke from the body of the girl and she turned her attention to the bodyguard. “Serah is not sure who you are but she suggests that you ignore the Yaid mandate and leave.” It was at this time that Serah felt her phone go off. After a moment she called out to Gine. “Hey quest got updated you are to kill the scientist and then evaluate the experiment to see if it’s sane at all. If it’s not you are to terminate that particular program. If it is sane then we leave it here.” Serah then returned to watching.

Serah knowing they meant her shifted her weapon around. The blades faced behind her at this point. “Serah does not wish for more bodies today. She will defend herself with all force however.” Serah crouched and fixed a stare at the body guard. She was not watching as Serah began to write a text. Serah shifted her feet to get a better footing since she was sure she was about to have to fight the bodyguard. The blood on the ground made that a questionable activity however as it was rapidly becoming slick.

Gine looked over at the kid as she smiled at her with the dying person at her side. With a final breath she was fully dead and Gine looked at her, “well that sucks I guess,” she then looked up as Serah called out to her that her quest had been changed. Gine looked down at the woman who she was supposed to kill that was already dead then looked at the young girl then back at Serah and said, “well she’s dead and the kid seems crazy. ” Gine then looked down at the girl as she said something and got ready to fight. Gine watched her for a moment before her phone beeped.

Gine looked at the message before shutting it and slipping it back into her pocket holding up a finger to the boy, telling her silently to wait a moment and walking to a Dawn woman and handed her the girl, “take care of her please?” the woman took the child and backed away a bit as Gine walked back to her position and slid a little to a stop. She kept in mind that the ground was slick and she held her weapon at the ready. Her quest was to assess the kid’s sanity. Her quest was not to win the fight, which she doubted she would against the child, whatever the experiment was.

Gine nodded at her own thoughts and got into her own fighting stance. She then took a step forward and did a simple vertical swing of her sword, just to test out what exactly it was she was going up against. From that she would determine if she would have to throw the fight or if the experiment could beat her without any help.

“You’re name’s Serah right?’ asked Gine, beginning the assessing part of her quest, “how’s your day been so far?”Serah carefully watched as the bodyguard gave away the girl. She was glad she was out of the danger zone she was very tired of killing people. Still when the bodyguard asked about her friend she tensed she had never even met the person. Swiftly she brought up her defense to defend as an incoming blow was launched. The weapons collided but Serah remained unharmed. Serah this one does not seem to be one of their best. Kill it quickly.

Serah rolled her shoulders disengaging the weapons. She the arced her at an upward angle. If her attack was a success she would catch the bodyguard low in the ribs. The blades were faced so that the blunt end of the weapon would strike the bodyguard. Serah began to wonder who was this person. Why did she know her and more importantly since as far as she knew her friend had never even publicly acknowledged her existence? Still the attack had begun and she would not call it back.

Gine grunted slightly as her attack was easily caught. It was a little creepy looking into the face of a seven year old that wanted to kill you but Gine didn’t think too deeply on it. Instead she thought of how her attempt t make light conversation seemed to have failed. Suddenly though the girl slipped out of the dead lock and caught Gine against her ribs. Gine stumbled to the side and held her hand over the area that would surely bruise.

“Nice hit Serah,” said Gine rubbing the sore area before holding out her weapon again, “so you got any friends here in Dawn?” Gine asked before running forward and swinging first horizontally one way before flipping the weapon around and swinging it down vertically again. She leapt back and held her weapon defensively as she tried thinking of normal thing to talk about but the kid seemed like she was not going to say anything.

“You’re smart,” said Gine, shrugging her shoulders, “a conversation works best when there are two people talking to each other, otherwise it’s like one is talking to a wall,” Gine braced herself for the next attack that was surely coming. She caught sight of Serah sitting in the truck watching the fight. The Spec Ops wouldn’t have to worry about being bored much longer though, the kid seemed to know her way around a sword, Gine predicted she would be done with the next attack or so.
Serah smiled in a cold Fashion as her blow connected. “Serah has no friends anywhere.” This comment was in response to the question by the bodyguard. She skipped back then forward catching a second downward blow. This blow was harder to defend against but Serah managed with what appeared to be ease. The bodyguard disengaged and Serah found herself getting a lecture about conversation. “Serah agrees she just has nothing to say when she is being attack for a Yaid experiment.” Serah chooses the words carefully wanting to make it seem just trying to protect herself from an oppressive company. This caused an angry mutter in the crowd.

Serah decided that she wanted to see the face of her tester. She had two ways to do so one was to ask but under the circumstances she did not think that would happen. The other was risky but would be much more fun. So she surged forward and swung her Buddy in another upward arc. If it connected then it would cause little damage unless the person had the helmet strapped on. The main point of the attack was obviously to knock the helmet off.

“Ah I see,” said Gine as the child blocked her attacks. She was definitely intelligent, and she seemed sane enough. Quest accomplished, “well if you want, I’ll be your friend. I don’t particularly like the experiments Yaid does on people either so,” Gine swung her weapon and sheathed it on her back, “that was a fun short battle yeah?” Gine thought that it was all over. However the child did not stop, she suddenly lunged forward and swung her weapon upwards. It struck against Gine’s helmet as she stumbled back and the strength of the blow rattled her head in the helmet before it finally released and few upwards into the sky.

Waist-long blond hair flowed out around Gine’s shoulders and her Crystalline blue eyes glittered as they caught the light. She bent slightly and rubbed her helmet where the most pain was. Gine could hear Serah sputter and swear. The Spec Ops had never seen Gine without her helmet, none of the Spec Ops had, and her local picture from when she joined had a picture of her with neatly cut hair. Naturally that was several years ago. Well this was certainly a change. Gine would make a mental note of this and come back to it later
