Wake up The voice echoing through the darkness sounded very familiar. It sounded like his own, but different somehow. Wake up to what’s going on around you, Trunks. It was his voice, but he could hear a very distinct difference. There was an underlying anger to it that he couldn’t place. You’re not going to save your future sitting around. You’re not going to save it all at this rate. Was it possible this was another version of himself? Could they be from even further in the future? How else could he know about the mission he was on? You’re not going to find any piece of technology that can prevent what happened. There’s only one thing that will every truly be able to stop that kind of destruction. Your own power. The voice could be right. From what he’d been told Goku, his father, and all the other warriors of the past always trained to increase their own power. None of them ever sought out a machine to solve their problems. They faced disaster head on and without fear. Was this what he needed to do? Sure, if he could find a way to arrive in the time period before the warriors of his timeline were killed, he’d have the possibility of saving them, but without more strength he wouldn’t be able to. Perhaps it was time to refocus his journey. Without more power, it could all end before he even found a way to change the future. A distant echo scratched through the blackness once more. It seemed to be getting louder as it got closer. His ears were ringing. He could feel the warm trickle of blood running from them. The sound only got closer. Wake Up Trunks lifted his head from the tree he’d leaned against to relax. As his eyes opened he could see the world around him. What a dream. It’d been the first he’d had since crossing the barrier of time. Perhaps that’d been the root of what made that dream so strange. As that thought crossed his mind, he realized he could still feel the warmth of blood running from his ears. Immediately, he wiped the blood away. Neither of his ears continued to bleed after this so he’d decided to not put much thought into it for now. He’d already had enough to deal with. Dr. Gero’s lab had given him nowhere to start on his search. The altercation he found himself in there may have ultimately proved to be both a waste of time and energy. It had served one purpose however. It let him know that people much stronger than himself existed in this world and judging by the power levels he had been sensing since he arrived, there were plenty more. Whether or not it had been the odd dream he just had that inspired him, he’d decided it was best to place more stock in his own power. His whole journey would go to waste if he died before even making it back home. His strength could be considered an insurance measure in this case. There was no reason that he couldn’t use this world to his advantage beyond its technological capabilities. In the world he’d grown used to, all the strongest warriors had perished before he’d ever began training. All except his mentor, Gohan, but even he eventually… The important thing to remember was that the presence of powerful fighters wasn’t a bad thing in all aspects. He now had a chance to possibly learn from people he’d never have the chance to learn from before. West City seemed like a good place to follow up on his travels or at least that’s what Trunks had told himself. In reality his choice of location came more from him wanting the chance to see his hometown in one piece again. Even if it wasn’t really his hometown, the semi-familiar sight may be the spark he needed. It made sense to see if Capsule Corp existed in this world and if so to what capacity they operated. If there was any organization that potentially knew a thing or two about time travel, it did seem likely that it could be the people who technically already invented it. Even if they had yet to make any technological advancements in the field of time travel, the ability to speak with someone who knew anything about the concept could be worth checking into. Before leaving the campsite Trunks had set up for himself the night before, he stored his Time Machine in its capsule. It almost felt like a physical embodiment of the hope he tried to carry with him. It was what allowed him to begin this journey in the first place. He left the rest of the camp as it was however. This was the first landmark other than Gero’s lab that he’d really made. It would be good to be able to have a place to come back to after he dealt with the business he had to. After all he didn’t exactly have a house to go to in this world. The purple-haired half Saiyan took to the skies and headed in the direction of West City. It was upon reaching the city that he’d realized there were a lot more differences between this timeline and his own than he’d first thought. Things as arbitrary as the names of streets were entirely different from what he was used to. Then again there was no way of really telling if he was properly remembering the street names. It had been many years since proper navigation of the city was possible in his time. Most signs had been destroyed at some point or another and the remaining ones had either been stolen, for reasons unbeknownst to him, or vandalized. Hours passed before he found anything that resembled a science laboratory. As oddly casual as it seemed for a situation of such severity, Trunks walked straight into the lobby and approached the receptionist. It wasn’t until after he’d been asked to leave the building that he realized explaining the concept of time travel to a regular person was a bit of a leap. It probably didn’t help that he’d immediately attempted to follow up that explanation with questions about whether or not the lab had conducted any research into the matter. Perhaps he’d ruled himself unlucky too soon as when he exited that lab he could see people gathering around a screen branded with the Capsule Corp logo. He walked closer to the growing crowd to see what he could discover about the scene. An advertisement began and the crowd seemed to quiet down as it did. This advertisement was seemingly what they’d all gathered around the screen to see. Through a load of flashy graphics and bad segue ways, the focal point of the commercial seemed to be that Capsule Corp would be unveiling new technologies at their expose later. Luckily for Trunks, an address was given at the end of the ad. His watch’s GPS seemed to be working surprisingly. He programmed the address into it while it was still on screen so he could be sure that he didn’t type it in incorrectly. If there was any technology that related to time travel, Trunks held onto the hope that he’d be able to discover it at this expose. It was also somewhat exciting to be able to see the company his mother had been a key individual in in its prime. It was a feeling Trunks could almost describe as nostalgic, though he’d never really had any significant memories of the original Capsule Corp’s glory days. Trunks had managed to sneak his way into the event. An unforeseen way of entry, but one that was necessary as he hadn’t realized there was going to be an entry fee. He’d forgotten the fact that while Capsule Corp was an organization working toward the advancement of humankind, they were also a business that needed to generate revenue. Sneaking in was easier than expected. Maybe security needed to be paid more and treated more strictly because it certainly seemed they were all very relaxed. Some of them even seemed comfortable in their positions, not even really bothering to keep any kind of lookout over their given areas. It was very unbecoming of a corporation that housed such important pieces of equipment for the world. Whilst exploring the expose Trunks was able to test some of their newest products. To his dismay all of these products were capsule related. He got carried away with the enjoyment of the event. He allowed himself to be sucked in to what living in a world without genocidal androids was like. This was what he and his mother were working toward. To restore the world to a time like this. It wasn’t until the end of the expose that guilt began to wash over Trunks. He had wasted an entire day there and had made absolutely no headway into his intelligence gathering. He hadn’t been training either so he hadn’t become any stronger. He couldn’t continue to behave like this. Basking in what this world was did no good to the world he called home. Wake up, Trunks… All of the time he’d spent looking into technology had given him nothing. He was no closer to learning how to properly travel through time without crossing the barrier of another timeline. This almost felt like a defeat to him. An entire day wasted. He needed to lift himself up. In hopes of doing so, he set himself a much more attainable goal. He would train as hard as he could relentlessly for the next few days. There was nothing he could do about the lack of technological capability this Earth had offered him so far, but there was something he could do about his own lack of strength. Trunks left the city and returned to his campsite. He spent that night both hunting and gathering food to keep him fed throughout this training period. This was a goal he had to stick to. He needed something to go successfully for him. If he couldn’t get stronger then there would be no one to blame, but him. There was no need to worry about that now though. He wasn’t going to have to blame anyone because he would be stronger. He had set a goal and it was time that he finally follow through with it. It was time for him to hone the craft of battle he possessed and become a true warrior. He would be a warrior that would make his father proud. He would be a warrior that could stand alongside Goku. He would be the warrior that Gohan believed he could be and that was a promise. WC: 1,804 |
