The Lookout, Kami's Lookout, was a bastion of peace in a war-torn world. It floated serenely in the air, like an unchanging crystal, playing sentinel to all of creation. It was here that Adelaide had come to gain power. Master Roshi still had much to teach him, but the rumors he had heard about the training of the mysterious Namekian only known as Kami were legendary. Adelaide was not disappointed. Kami's training was different from Master Roshi's. Where Master Roshi had been concerned with fundamentals, like speed and energy control, Kami's training was rather brutal. It was endurance training, pushing the trainee to the limit in every sense of the word. Adelaide usually ended his training beaten, bloodied, and barely able to stand. He loved it. This was the sort of training he needed if he was going to keep with Rem, Chishan, Vlad, Roland, and the rest of those insanely powerful warriors he had met over his travels. He always felt like he was lagging behind, even though he knew, knew his power had increased substantially since he had started his exploration into the world of super powered fighters. The continual setbacks of his losing fight after fight had begun to get to him. Kami didn't care about any of that. Well, he did, but in this sort of detached way, like a grandparent. Adel supposed it was because the elderly Master had been through some intense times in his own right. It was the imagining of those times that had kept Adel from opening up to his erstwhile mentor. Each person had their own baggage, and he felt that it wasn't fair to share his with someone who obviously had their own. So Adelaide had come here to get stronger. Because every day, it seemed, he could feel the increase in his own power. In the Galaxy there were other beings. So strong they resonated in his subconscious. Even now, there were pairs or small groups of incredibly powerful fighters battling all over the face of the Earth. He imagined that he could feel the warmth of their energy even over these distances. It was kind of funny, on reflection. Earth was considered mostly a Galactic backwater. So pathetic that it was under the 'protection' of the Saiyan Empire. Why, then, did it always seem like everyone was fighting on or over it? It couldn't be the dragon balls. From what Adelaide had gleaned through conversations with the Masters he had trained under so far, the Dragon balls of Earth were considerably weaker than the other sets out there. The planet Namek, for example, which Adelaide knew was Kami's home world, had not been fought over anywhere near the number of times Earth had, despite also possessing a set. It wasn't that Earth had no importance in the Galactic scene. The exact opposite. Earth was incredibly important, for a variety of reasons. It had two legendary martial arts masters on it, which was apparently very rare from what he had heard. Pair that with the Dragon balls and an apparently unique heterogeneous planetary culture, it lead to a situation which had all of the Galactic powers eying the Earth hungrily. So there was more than enough motivation for a young human to gain as much power as possible. He had spoken about it with Kami at length. The wizened Namekian had suggested a course that not everyone took. The Lookout apparently had a room which allowed you to face challenges far beyond what you could normally. It relied on some kind of mental interface that Adelaide wasn't very familiar with, but then all of this was pretty new to him, in a manner of speaking. Most advanced technology as well as energy manipulation wasn't standard teaching in Earth schools. If Adelaide didn't know any better he would've called it a conspiracy. Most humans lived a pitiable life, chained to the Earth and unable to grasp the latent energy inside of them. Not everyone was cut out to be a fighter, but there really was no excuse for every human not to know how to fly. Even with the beatings, mental trauma, impalement, attempted disintegration, and assorted injuries that being super powered brought, flying still made it worthwhile. Heck, Adelaide owned a rather large spaceship and didn't use it if he needed to get around the planet, since flying was just so viscerally enjoyable. So now Adel was sitting, with his legs crossed, in a dark room. No, dark wasn't the correct description. The walls ate the light as they extended an indeterminate distance, leaving only the faintest shimmer coming off of the floor. There was a massive metal and crystal pendulum hanging from the ceiling above his head. He had to assume that was where the room had gotten it's name from. It looked relatively plain, considering the warnings Kami had given him along with the fact that it was in a room that apparently broke the laws of physics. The Namekian Master wasn't here now. He had other students to attend to, so Adel had been left in the capable hands of Kami's assistant, Mister Popo. The young fighter couldn't think of a description that would sound messed up if he tried explaining it to someone who didn't know Mister Popo, so he just thought of the mysterious black-skinned being as Kami's Assistant. Slowly, the Pendulum drew upwards, moving through half of it's arc as it prepared to swing. "Be Ready." Those were the only words Mister Popo had said when the Pendulum began to move. There was a click, and the large metallic shape swung in front of Adel's vision. Adelaide was on a battlefield. He'd seen one or two in the last year. They had a certain feel that was unmissable to those who'd been in them before. Little things, like the complete destruction of everything in every direction. Distant screaming, that sort of thing. In this battlefield's case, it was a wrecked city. It wasn't Central City, as far as Adel could tell, as CC didn't have mountains so close that they could be seen in the haze. The sky was overcast and tinged with red. Adelaide didn't even know if he was on Earth anymore. He began to walk forward, deeper into the twisted ruins of metal and concrete. It was then that his ability to sense energy came back to him like a tidal wave. He was surrounded by massive power sources. It was like if he had been able to sense the Steel Legion. For a moment Adelaide was lost in a whirling maelstrom of sensory information, threatening to overwhelm him. What brought him back to reality was the storefront he was walking by exploding. He was showered with glass and wood as he rolled out of the way, coming up in a fighting stance. Directly in front of him appeared a massive, brutish-looking fighter. He (well, it looked like a 'he') was probably two meters tall, and packing more muscle on one arm than Adelaide did on his entire body. Adel's energy sense wasn't giving him a good feeling either. This fighter was far stronger than he. Welp, par for the course, Adelaide thought with an internal sigh. It wasn't all the surprising when the hulking warrior backhanded him into the ruined building than had just been blown up. Crunching through what was left of the wooden frame and glass in the windows set Adel's teeth on edge. It was always this sort of thing when he was fighting. It was like there wasn't anyone in the Universe who was weaker, or even on the same level as he was. It was humiliating, honestly. That was the thought process which led to Adel making a decision. No holding back, no conserving energy. He didn't know how long this training was supposed to go on but he was just going to go all-out until one of them was dead. He mentally released the limiter on his power and strengthened himself to his full ability. The ruined building he was in began to vibrate with the power he was channeling. Finding a good piece of wall, he braced both feet on it and called his ki. The remains of the building erupted as he kicked himself off, surrounded in the ki needed to fly. He pulled back a fist. The short glimpse of the fighter he got showed a shocked expression. That was filed away in his mind for future reference. He was going to make this guy have that expression as many times as possible. He threw his fist forward, connecting with the jaw of the huge fighter. Adelaide had done special training to increase his punching power. It had begun with such a simple thing as Master Roshi giving him additional weights to wear on his arms at all times. Then came punching boards. Then stones. Then concrete. Before he knew it, Adelaide's punch had become strong enough to punch through tank armor with nothing more than mild discomfort. This wasn't the path to combat most fighters took, what with the presence of incredibly power weapons in the Universe apparently waiting for the strong to come and claim them, but Adel didn't trust any of that. His fists were attached, so he could never lose them, and so he was going to make sure that they could hit as hard as super humanly possible. From the things Master Roshi and Kami had told him, his punching strength was above that of most fighters around his power, even a few above his. All of that training paid off as the concussive force from the punch threw the massive warrior back several feet and onto his back. He showed surprising dexterity by rolling his legs up and using them to spring forward directly at Adelaide. This time, though, the young warrior was ready. Kami stood in the darkest next to the oldest friend he had ever known, his manservant, confidant, and man-at-arms Mister Popo. "How is he doing?" The old Namekian asked, his voice quiet in the vast space. He had sent many warriors into the Pendulum Room before Adelaide, and would many more in the future. He always let them think that he wouldn't be advised of their performance until after the fact. That wasn't exactly true, however. Kami still enjoyed keeping tabs on his pupils, as sometimes they surprised him with a clever interpretation of instructions, a new technique, or (even better) tapping into a higher level of power than they had been able to reach previously. This time, though, Mister Popo shook his head. "Surprising. He had not fled against the stronger opponent. More than that, he is winning." The Namekian didn't know how to take that. Rarely did anyone keep slamming their head against the wall of a vastly superior opponent. It was only the special ones who did anything like 'win' against them for any length of time. "How is that possible?" he asked his long time friend. "Because he has abandoned any semblance of strategy. His training in purely physical combat, coupled with his above-average ability to take punishment, he is surpassing his opponent in a physical content. Any time his enemy stops to gather energy for an attack, Adelaide is there with a flurry of attacks," Mister Popo looked up to his aged Master, "He is not saving anything. If this fight does not end quickly, he will be overpowered by dint of his opponent having a greater reserve of power to call upon." Kami gave a concerned look to the seated form of his latest pupil. There were scars, some recent on his flesh. The stories he had behind them were terrible. For someone who was so young he had been through much more than others. Not even a full year ago he was a normal human, unconcerned with the greater Galaxy, the tribulations of the movers and shakers. His acquisition of the ability to manipulate energy, and the vast power that came with that, had forcibly pulled him into that world. Worry lines creased Kami's already ragged features. Something inside the young man was broken. Some could handle the constant fighting, the jockeying for position in the Galaxy, like it was natural for them. They rode the flow of activity until they secured some kind of personal power from which they could enact long-standing plans, changing the very landscape of interstellar politics. Those were the people currently running or fighting for the various factions that had divided the Galaxy into the current quagmire is was. Others, like Adelaide, were not made for it. Tossed into the maelstrom of constant warfare, they would break apart. Often they simply left, becoming teachers in out of the way villages. Others became drunks, simple laborers, anything to take their minds off of the blood that could never wash off of their hands. The cracks were starting to show in Adelaide's facade. The boy hid a terrible anger. It made him dangerous in combat, but it also left him vulnerable. If he lost control of it, he started to burn himself up. He had described his fight with Rem in which he had lost himself in his memories. There was a deeper problem than simple anger. Adelaide was not in the right mindset where he could accept the various petty cruelties of the Galaxy. It was eating him from the inside. Kami did not know if the young fighter was strong enough to withstand it. The worst part of it all was that there was little Kami could do about it. Adel had to overcome his demons himself. Either he could come to grips with the pain and destruction this lifestyle caused, or it would consume him. Kami felt that he understood the young man enough to know that he wouldn't run from this. He had some kind of strange sense of obligation regarding being a super powered fighter. The elderly Namekian had asked Adel about it after noticing the first time. "Humans are weak," he had said with a heavy voice, "This is well known. There are only, maybe, thirty humans in the entire Galaxy who have achieved a level of power that's not entirely ignorable. My people, my planet, we're seen as weak, a backwater province that the greater powers can enslave and trade amongst each other at will. The Avalonians, the Saiyans, the PTO. Everyone wants us, and there's nothing we can do about it." He had turned to face Kami at that point. His eyes were dead, glassy. Like he had already accepted his mortality. "I will stop that. I will free my world, or I will die in the attempt." Both of them had very different opinions on the definition of slave, but there was little to fault. For all of the goodwill in interstellar politics, neither the Protectorate nor the Saiyan Empire really cared what Earth had to say. Earthlings weren't even allowed to govern their own planet. With a wry chuckle, Kami thought that even Earth's Guardian was of a race other than human. Even a gilded cage was still a cage. And he was right about the opinions on humans as well. In a manner of speaking, of course. Humans weren't really thought of on the Galactic scale. Mainly because so few traveled outside of the bounds of their planet. His desire to 'save' humanity was not needed. Sure, they weren't really allowed to rule their own planet, but they were safe. There were few forces in the Universe which would tangle with the Saiyan Empire to attack the Earth. It simply wasn't important enough. The Steel Legion had been horrific, but they were gone, dead and buried. A surge of energy in the room brought Kami back to the present. Adel's physical form was responding to the telepathic combat. He brow was furrowed, sweat beaded across his forehead and jaw. The elderly Namekian was sure that he could hear the sinews and muscles of his arms, with how tightly the human had his fists clenched. Most warriors didn't have reactions like this, mainly because most of the fighters that entered the Pendulum Room were not at the power that Adel already possessed. That was something else about his student that irritated Kami. Adelaide was powerful. Probably in the top fifteen of pure-blooded humans in the Universe. He didn't see that, though. The inferiority complex he carried around in his head was impressive. His student could not see his own power. He only saw the losses he had suffered. The warriors vastly more powerful than how he even was now. To most, that would be a motivator to work harder. It worked like that with Adelaide, after a fashion. The amount of effort he put into any project he encountered was impressive for any race, much less a human. There wasn't a positive motivation behind it, though. He was filled with despair. He had fought beside and against some of the most powerful beings to ever live, and he felt that no matter what he did he would never equal their ability. Despair was an emotion the elderly Namekian was familiar with. Just not so much from one so young. He flung himself into battle with all of the effort of a death seeker. That was why he held nothing back, why he never planned ahead of whatever fight he was in. Adelaide did not expect to come back from any of these battles. It was disheartening to realize that fact. That the person you were training did not think he was strong enough to live past the next fight. Word Count: 1299 Combined Word Count: 2950 |

Concrete blew apart, chunks flying in every directions. Buildings, row after row, blasted into pieces. The beam of energy, shining in the haze, tore through them with a casual ease. Finally, it hit it's intended target, a warrior of strength and size. With a light brighter than noontime, the beam detonated into a massive explosion. Cutting through the light was the form of Adelaide Peters, blurred from speed. With both fists he slammed into the block of the fighter. The two began to trade blows. The impact of each strike blew debris and dust away from their location. Their forms became hazy as they moved to keep up with each other. To an uninitiated eye, it seemed like they were flickering in and out of vision. For a split second, they would appear, trading punches. Adelaide was beyond coherent thought. The world seemed red to him, but he did not notice it. All he could think about was the other person. His enemy. They were still standing, still fighting back. They were tiring more slowly than he was, taking hits better. It was insulting. It was angering. How fucking DARE HE, his internal voiced screamed. You are not stronger than me. YOU CANNOT BE STRONGER THAN ME I WILL NOT ACCEPT THAT. He slipped beneath a wide hay maker to deliver three rapid punches to his opponent's midsection, to as little (seeming) affect as any of his attacks previously. Sure, there was damage, but it wasn't enough. It was never enough. The young human was losing. Even if he could not form coherent thoughts, he knew that. Something in his guy told him that. It pissed him off more. Everything he did lately was lose. Everyone he fought not only beat him, they destroyed him. Nothing he did was of any importance. It was a baby playing at the games of adulthood. No doubt his opponents found it hilarious, this jumped up clod kicker from that disgusting little hovel of a planet, Earth. That thought hurt more than the hits his opponent was landing. That he was so weak, so inconsequential. That the other races were laughing at him behind his back. Sure, they seemed polite enough when you encountered them. That is, when they weren't trying to kill you to prove to themselves that you were 'good' enough to talk to. What a joke! He was still pissed off from the Rem fight. That wasn't how you really sought out allies, by attacking people in the middle of the street and just expecting someone to step up and try to stop you. What gave him the qualifications? What gave him the Kamikai damned right to pass judgement? That was aliens for you, though. The 'lesser race' of humans weren't smart or strong enough to form their own opinions. They needed looking after, shepherding. Give me a fucking break. What hurt the most was how NICE it all seemed to the people who couldn't see through it, see the carefully hidden smirks and snickers. They didn't respect Earth. Hell, they didn't even care about Earth. It was just a pawn in their huge chess game. A trade here, a war there. Who cared, right? They're just humans, RIGHT?! Nothing of consequence? Who cared if they had Dragon balls, and Martial Arts Masters, and Senzu Beans. They were just weak little humans, waiting on some stronger race to control them. They were practically asking to be enslaved! Those thoughts kept running through his head. They did all day, all night. They were the thoughts that were with him always. He couldn't escape from them except when he was training, and sometimes not even then. It felt like a fire inside of him, this hate. He nurtured it, fed it his bitter, diseased thoughts. He drew from it's power. Yes, there was power in hate. Great power. He would use that power, one day, to get revenge on every single alien who thought the human race was too weak to protect themselves. Distracted, Adelaide missed the fake out from his opponent. One of his wrists was seized in a meaty fist. The other slammed into his midsection in a rapid staccato. He was flung into the air next. The warrior opened his mouth, and a massive green beam of energy erupted from it. The young human had no way of dodging or blocking it. He had been pushing himself too strong too early on, and had run out of energy. Weakly, he raised a block. He felt himself become engulfed in the energy, felt the concussive force rip into his body. He was back on the floor of the Pendulum Room, panting. Scrambling to his feet, Adelaide look around, fists raised. It took him a minute to remember where he was, to lower his arms and relax. He turned to see Kami and Mister Popo standing by the entrance to the room. The looks they had on their faces were odd. What does that mean? he thought as he walked forward, feeling the hate swell within him. He crushed it down. These were his friends and trainers. Word Count: 855 Combined Word Count: 3805 |
