A pair of burning red coals stared back at him from the depths of the void, piercing and unending. Yuu gazed back, silent, and watched them narrow. Within him, a myriad of feelings churned themselves into an unending frenzy of confusion and fear, and when the feelings became too much to bear he fell away into the dark. He reached for the walls of the abyss and screamed as he fell, vaguely aware that he was being swallowed up by a force so unlike himself that he couldn't put it to words.

He sat up hard, and beads of salty sweat fell off of his head like raindrops. They splattered against his chest and pillow, indifferent to the chill outside of his window. Cars streaked by like laser lights outside the glass, fading back and forth into the city while a youth with a tumultuous heart struggled beneath his sheets. Yuu watched the cars go by on the highway for a few minutes before throwing his legs over the side of his bed and bracing his head in his hands.

It was the same nightmare, over and over again. A pair of burning red eyes and a mishmash of voices that Yuu couldn't understand. They shouted out names and places and warcries, and then, like candles, they were snuffed out into the endless night. Yuu didn't understand what they were yelling about, but the whole ordeal was quite frustrating, and as he picked himself up off of the bed, he couldn't imagine why their voices called to him.

It was like they somehow expected his help, or like they thought he could save them from the demon that cast them into the black.

Yuu took care not to wake Pikkon as he approached the dresser and pulled out a black sweatshirt to cover his bare chest. He tugged it down over his head and shoulders and made sure it was well-zipped before he slipped on a pair of sandals. It wasn't the best gear for leaving the hotel late at night, especially with how close everything was to the highway, but Yuu didn't figure he'd be outside for very long. He just needed to get a bit of fresh air.

He snatched the room key off of the table against the wall and took a few coins for good measure before he stepped outside.

Yuu pulled the door shut behind him as quietly as possible and gazed out into the night with a little bit of anxiety playing across his shoulders. He could feel the demon's eyes on him from worlds away, watching his every move and burrowing deep into his soul. The youth reminded himself that he was no longer dreaming and blinked away the fear, suddenly very aware that he was alone in the parking lot.

The clock in the room (which he only vaguely remembered glancing at) said it was around midnight. It was two minutes 'till when he'd woken up. Pikkon probably wouldn't be awake for hours, especially since he wasn't supposed to be up for a good five more himself. Yuu wondered, briefly, whether or not Pikkon really needed sleep, or if he just liked doing it. Aliens weren't something he understood, despite the fact that he felt like one himself.

Earth wasn't what he'd expected.

Still, he plodded on like an exhausted soldier, meandering toward the drink machine at the end of their floor. A number of choices lingered in the machine before him, and as he surveyed them, he acknowledged that he could actually read the words written on the cans. That, he figured, was different. On Kelioux, he'd just assumed himself to be illiterate. Words always jumbled themselves up like jumping beans and flickered around before he got the chance to catch them with his eyes.

The machine's lights flickered off, and for a second, Yuu had the irrational fear that he'd broken the thing. He smacked it on the side and they jittered back to life, prompting a sigh of relief and the hasty pressing of a few buttons.

Earth was both different than what he'd expected and easier than he thought it would've been. Kelioux was hard, unforgiving, and at times, difficult to stand. Earth was the same way, but instead of hard, it was more... transparent. People weren't crafty, to the same degree. Everyone was still trying to trick him, but he could tell when they were, now. On Kelioux, it was more of a subtle coercion.

On Earth, people just wanted to use a person up until there was nothing left. Like toothpaste, they squeezed from the bottom and worked their way up the tube, making sure they got everything out. Yuu'd heard Persephone say that doing things like that was called "milking the cash cow," but he didn't really understand the phrase. Cows weren't made out of money. They were made out of flesh and beef.

Yuu paused and knelt down to grab at the can of iced coffee that fell from the machine, confident that it'd keep him awake for a little while longer. He didn't want to go back to sleep with the threat of the demon watching over him so intently. It was a terrifying thought. Demons were scary, so were red eyes, and so were dead people.

An image of the dead girl from the Inn fluttered through his head and Yuu shuddered.

"Narvi," he muttered. "That guy... he's too creepy."

He didn't know why he was talking out loud, but some part of him felt vindicated by doing it. So, he continued, tapping open the can.

"It's like he tries too hard to be wise. Like something hurt him when he was stupid, so to not be stupid, he tries too hard to be smart."

The scent of vanilla swept up on the wind and filled the youth's nose, and it took a lot of restraint for Yuu not to just chug down the whole coffee. That, he figured, would've been counterproductive. He'd have gotten the same amount of caffeine, but there wouldn't be any time spent. He'd end up falling asleep with the demon still on his mind if he rushed things.

With that in mind, he stepped over to the railing and looked out over the parking lot. Cars raced by on the street outside of it, and every once in a while, they pulled into the gas station across the way. Yuu sipped at his iced coffee and watched the people go by, still thinking of Narvi and whatever might've made him the man he was instead of the man he could've been.

"It's just better to be you, I think," he said, imitating what he'd say to Narvi if something ever came up. "I think."

The youth stood there in silence for a long time after that, watching as people got out of their cars and paid for their gas and sped on down the way. Every time someone interesting caught his eye, he made up a story for why they were there, where they were going, and how long they'd been away from home. Some of the stories were sad, and others were exciting. Most were absurdly typical. All of the men were named Jerry, and all of the women were named Jan.

About fifteen cars came and went at the gas station before Yuu finished sipping on his coffee and became aware of the chill in the air. He deposited the coffee in the trash can by the machine and stuffed his arms deep in the pockets of his sweatshirt.

He realized, in that instant, that he'd never put a pair of pants on.

Yuu frowned and grabbed at the bottoms of his boxers, suddenly flustered. His cheeks turned red and he glanced to both sides, desperately hoping that nobody'd seen him, and thankfully, nobody had.

"That's good," he mumbled, absently. He should have noticed when he didn't put any of the change in his pocket. He should've noticed when he stuffed his room key in the pocket of his sweatshirt. He should've noticed when he was putting on his flipflops -- but he didn't. He huffed, animatedly, and leaned over the railing."I'm such a dunderhead."

The walk back to his hotel room was a lot longer than the walk to the drink machine, and a lot chillier. Gusts of wind caressed his legs and stirred up the fabric of his boxers, which only stiffened Yuu's resolve to pull on a pair of warmer pants the second he entered the room.

He pulled the door (close to) shut behind him when he walked in and shot a quick glance over at Pikkon to make sure that he was still asleep before he pulled on a pair of pajama pants. They had fluffy little kitties on them and looked pretty cool, which justified it in his head. Light blue was totally one of his colors, and as he checked himself out in the dim light of the mirror, he admitted that he was rocking the color well.

He gave himself a thumbs up and slinked over to his bed, which was against the wall of the room, and sat down.

Yuu stared out the door as he sat on the edge of his bed, already feeling the faint tuggings of sleepiness weighing him down. It always came on the same way, and he'd long since learned to recognize how it started. There was a tugging feeling, and his head felt heavy, weighted by the burdens of his day. Inside of his mind, a blanket of unfurling stars rolled off into the heavens, and vanished with a gentle whisper.

Instead of closing the door, Yuu let himself fall back onto the messy comforter he'd hastily thrown off earlier. He'd only been gone like thirty minutes. His coffee somehow hadn't kicked in yet, but he was starting to... drift way away.

"I don't wanna sleep yet," he grumbled, trying desperately to avoid reaching for his pillow. Thunder rolled behind his eyes every time he blinked and invited him to lay there longer, so that he might get some rest, but Yuu powered through admirably. Every breath came in a kind of rhythmic gasp, like he were asleep already. "Just...notyet."

Yuu's eyes shot open when a chilly breeze swept into the room and Pikkon stirred. His face was cold and his head was heavy, but Yuu stood up and stumbled over to the door to pull it shut before his associate could wake up. Pikkon, so far, was the only one of his new "companions" that hadn't gotten on his bad side yet. Pikkon understood when Yuu wanted to walk out, and the Vecherkan -- Verchekan -- Bergchicken -- the green man followed him.

It was a refreshing change of pace compared to his previous situation, and so he respected the man more for it.

Yuu rubbed at his eyes and stumbled back to the table with the clock on it. He sat down in the wooden chair in front of it and rested his chin in his arms, which were crossed over the wood. He was still tired, but sleep wasn't something that came easy to him. He woke up constantly, every night, tossing and turning like some kind of frustrated child. He didn't understand it.

Then again, the nightmares were probably the reason that his sleep sucked. If it weren't for the nightmares, he would probably go the whole night without waking up... barring any sudden breezes and bouts of leaving the door wide open. If they were robbed, he would've been the one taking the blame for it. Just to be sure, Yuu cast a casual glance around the room to make sure that nothing was gone.

Once he felt safe, he leaned back over the table and stared at the wall, trying to think over the dream he'd had while asleep the last time. It was a variation on the same thing as always, but it'd been something slightly different. There was some kind of cataclysmic battle, a boy yelling for it all to stop, and a massive, gleaming sword sticking out of crushed earth.

Yuu watched as a man with one arm and spiky black hair fell to the ground, unconscious and bleeding. Another man, with blonde hair and stormy eyes, assaulted a red demon. The beast cried out in pain and frustration while an otherworldly voice struggled to comfort it, determined to save the demon from his fate at the hands of the valiant warrior before him. There was a slew of voices, and everything blurred.

The youth leaned back in his seat and glared up at the ceiling, still frustrated. There was very little for him to learn by just sitting there, trying to analyze dreams that may or may not have actually meant anything. They were typically just jumbles of things he thought about. If he had a nightmare, he thought about it. So he had more nightmares. Wasn't that how it worked, most of the time?

Yuu stood and stripped off his sweatshirt, replacing it with a blank, white tee. He pulled it on over his head and flopped down on the face of the bed with a loud thud, but Pikkon didn't stir any more than he'd done before. Yuu stared at the green man while he slept, wondering whether or not Pikkon came to Earth with any special expectations.

Yuu'd come with the expectation that he'd find out more on what happened to his parents. He expected the nightmares to stop and he'd expected everyone to love him by default, purely because he was human like them. Instead, they all looked at him differently. Like a tomato in a carrot patch, Yuu stuck out wherever he went.

"It's stupid," he mumbled, craning his neck so that he faced the wall. He was still laying on his tummy, but it didn't make his feelings any less valid. He closed his eyes and nuzzled into his blankets. "I'm awesome."

His fingers played against the sheets for what felt like an eternity until his breathing fell into another rhythm. Images started to play across his head anew, reinvigorating the scene from before.

This time, there was a blonde girl, running from an ocean of shadows that seemed endless and daunting. Fire surrounded her to shield her from the black, but it took her to the ground regardless and ate away at the flesh over her shoulder. The man with one arm swung his gaunt blade at the pink demon, who batted away the strikes with skin made of rubber and muscle made of plastic.

Yuu gasped when the black haired man hit the ground again, with an anticlimactic splatter. The youth's heart started racing again, pounding out of his chest, and he stuffed his face down into the blankets with a furor. More thunder rolled behind his eyes and when he pushed himself up on his hands, he felt it inside of his ears.

"Ughhhhhhhhhhh."

He groaned and crawled up to his pillow, only to flop on his back. Speckles in the paint on the ceiling drew his attention, and he traced them with his eyes while he tried to ignore the visions dancing around in his head. He didn't recognize any of the people in his vision. They weren't fairies. It wasn't Christmas (not that he'd ever had a Christmas).

Could they see him too?
