Combat Rune

Well, that had been...fun? Yan had been traveling with Juch and Tomoko when he had spotted a strange billboard in space. Space billboards were often strange. They usually needed translation software, and even then, cultural cues were often missed. This billboard was poorly crafted, like no one could give a shit about it to even use photoshop, but was flashy enough with the words “MAGMA II: THE RUMBLE IN THE RUINS” spread across it. And who didn’t enjoy a rumble? Well, Juch didn’t, but Tomoko had been game and after some amusing taunting from him and Mr. Fields, Juch had agreed to attend as well, if only to keep an eye on them.

And they had rumbled! The outcome of the battle didn’t matter. The rules had been constantly changing, and dumb shit kept being added, so really, who cared who won? Certainly not the batshit crazy Namekian who was in charge. Nevertheless, Yan was taking his time to leave afterwards, gathering his affects absently and then wandering the stadium a bit when he saw a familiar face. The beautiful armored reserve Zaun, whose name he had never actually gotten. Well, he hadn’t had his name announced either.

”Nice fight,” he offers with a grin that obviously showed he enjoyed it despite the clusterfuck it had become. A fight was a fight right?

Champion I

The Crimson-haired maiden stared blankly at the floor. She had tried her best in battle, and that was the important part, right? Outcome aside, she left everything out there, just as she had done back on Zaun. It might have been a bit over a year since she was last in the ring, but she was just as at home as ever.

"Nice fight." Charming words rang from the young man who'd been taking the brunt of that halfling's attacks when she arrived. They had disposed of him quickly though, and she was happy to have gotten him out of the way. He didn't seem to be such a tough combatant, being struck down after only a few blows.

"Oh..." Gwen said, a faint smile surfacing on her face as she rubbed her neck. "Yeah I suppose it was. Same to you, it was fun, while it lasted that is." She added with a nervous laugh. "I'm Gwen, by the way. I don't believe we really had a chance for introductions, pleasantries are often discarded in the arena." She explained with a nervous laugh, letting the boy know it was not her first rodeo.

"And you are?" She asked, extending her hand to shake the young man's.

Yep, she was cute. A fierce warrior that could be cute was definitely one of his weaknesses, Anna was a fine example of that. He didn’t suppress his grin as she agreed and he nodded easily to her assessment. No, names were not often exchanged in the heat of battle, though for Yan his name was often forgotten all together. So much so, he was surprised when the girl pressed on to specifically ask him instead of let the subject drift to her own thoughts. His smile faded for a second, then fell back on his face with new energy.

”Yan,” he says, leaning forward over one of the chairs. He was in the second row, and he hesitated for a moment, then pushed himself over it with one easy motion. “Care for a rematch?” he asks after landing and dusting himself off. He looked up to her curious, obviously only meaning for a friendly spar. She seemed the type to enjoy battle, so why not? It had been awhile since he’d gone one on one against a friendly foe. The last time had actually been the man she felt similarly to. He’d lost track of Walid in the fray, but he was sure he’d turn up on fire somewhere later on.

"Hm, I guess I've still got a little fight left in me." Gwen said with a smile, standing up from her seat and leaping over the railing to get down to the arena. She hoped this wasn't breaking any of their rules, but with no event going on right now, she was sure they wouldn't care.

"So, Mr. Yan," Gwen started while she stretched out her arms. "Was that thief Walid still in the fight when you joined, or had he already succumb to battle?" She asked, rather innocently. It would have been hard to guess her motives without prying further. "I didn't expect a Zaun like myself to fall so easily." She admitted.

It was true, she hoped to make Walid pay right here in the ring. However, when she entered, he'd already been eliminated. She wondered if the man even knew Walid, but she thought she recalled his name being one of the few announced. He must have been so egocentric that he demanded it or something. She was told to enter, and she did so on a moments notice. She was already suited up on her ship, the ZSC Gloria, waiting for the call. She figured the Avatar of War of all people, who carried such big axes when they met again, to put up more of a fight.

”Just Yan,” the monkey says with a sheepish smile, as if embarrassed by the title. It was one thing to be called Mister Cass, that had certain finezze, but Mister Yan just sounded ridiculous. At least to him. He was never a fan of using too much formality in anyway. He barely troubled himself with any titles, not even in the military, to the point it got him in trouble.

”Or should I call you Miss Gwen?” he counters, his smile warming. He hopped back onto the platform, and walked to the other end of it. He blinked when the girl brought up Walid, looking over his shoulder curiously. Thief? He thought about the pink haired warrior and he had to admit, thief wasn’t below him. The guy was a reckless, flaming, idiot, who destroyed his sandwich and tried to eat it then barfed it. He didn’t really think the guy would steal anything valuable though. If he stole something, it had to be food.

”You know Wally?” he asks, not hiding his disinterest. He knew the two felt similar, and as she called him a “Zaun” he figured that was their shared race, but a race tended to make up a planet, and not all worlds were so small. ”I think he had an upset stomach,” he adds with a small shrug.

"Figures." Gwen scoffed. Far be it from Gwen to do any sort of judging, but she was astonished that the Avatar of War would have himself eliminated because of a little tummy ache. She loosened her gloves and dropped them to the arena floor. She didn't want to hurt Yan now, and besides if this was a friendly little skirmish there was no need for the bulky armor.

Piece by piece she shed the heavy iron pieces, until she was in her street clothes. Of course she really only bothered to remove the heavy pieces that'd slow her down. The breastplate, spaulders, gauntlets, greaves. She kept the boots on, as she didn't have any back up shoes around.

"Well then, I hope you're plenty prepared to see why I'm called the Eagle of Aeon." She said, a playful grin splayed on her face. It wasn't like a real fight, where she was concerned with rushing forward and being fierce, hoping to hurt her opponent quickly so that the rest of the battle could be tilted in her favor. Instead, she was lax, and rushed forward to show Yan what she was capable of. As she shot off the ground a wave of air rushed from her back, and she shot straight towards the young man. She went at him head first, bringing her right hand back, then shooting it forwards toward his chest with a palm strike.

Gwen was experience in both lethal and non-lethal practices. The latter which she only really picked up during the war. Before then, all life was sacred to her, and she never believed someone could deserve death. War changes people, as it goes, she knew there were monsters out there, and they looked like people. Those monsters deserved death. She could tell by the way he spoke and acted though, Yan was no monster.

Yan smiled at her scoff, but didn’t move to defend Walid. He had been a bit disappointed in him as well, if he was honest. It was a rare treat to get to fight side by side, it was a shame things had gotten so scrambled. He didn’t blame the man, but it was quite lame nonetheless.

He walked around the side of the ring, slow careful steps without turning away from her. It was similar to how an animal cornered their prey before attacking, and he did it instinctively while the woman stripped down from her armor. He was already in his street clothes, not even bothering with the skin tight Damaskian armor he recently acquired underneath. He hadn’t taken the rumble all that seriously, and it showed, but now he seemed at least a little more alert. His arms stayed down at his sides, but they were loose, ready to spring up at the slightest provocation.

The Eagle of Aeon, he would have to remember that. She sprung forward, and his smile grew in anticipation. ”Oop,” he lets out as her arm shot forward and he dropped down all the way to his heels to dodge. His palms pressed down into the cement and with an easy flip he sprung his feet up towards the girl’s chin. If she moved back, he’d roll all the way over, and lunge forward towards her waist in a grapple. If it hit, well he’d probably fall back and still go at her knees.

Perhaps she had been a bit overzealous trying to rush right in. Yan was a skilled fighter, that was likely how he was able to last in the tournament so long. Still, Gwen had faith in her own skills. So she was a bit conflicted, and really had no way to say who would really be the winner here. Fighting someone in a rumble is an entirely different process than fighting someone one on one. Of course, you might have a hard time convincing any old bonehead that.

She took a harsh kick on her jaw for what she'd tried to do, and she accepted that with a warrior's grace. The ginger-haired man did not waste much time, and came gunning for Gwen's knees. She wasn't quite sure how else to handle it, so she jumped, attempting to sort of somersault over the man, however as she did she pushed against his back, trying to force his momentum into the ground. She turned to the young man and giggled a bit, "So, where are you from, anyway. I've told you all these things about me, but all I know about you is your name. That hardly seems fair, now does it?"

Gwen jumped over him, pushing him down, so he went with it, curling up and taking the force of the rush into another somersault. When his feet hit the ground he sprung up, and spinning on one foot turned to face her. He looked at her with a goofy grin, obviously pleased to be fighting. Maybe he was still only treating it as a child’s game. Yan’s whole demeanor was light, like he was all about simply having a good time, and that only seemed to change to flirt.

”Hasn’t anyone told you the world’s not fair?” he asks still grinning. ”Besides, I don’t know nearly enough about you. Your name, your title, the name of where you’re from,” he says, and it was slightly apparent that “Zaun” did not actually mean much to him. It was a big galaxy, and it wasn’t surprising to hear there was a planet he didn’t know about.

”That’s all superficial,” he explains, keeping his guard up but lowering his hands once more and not going for her again just yet. ”Why don’t you tell me something real? Something about you and just you,” he says, his grin fading to a soft smile and his dark eyes were gentle and curious. His attention was solely on her, as if nothing else in the world mattered, not the fight, not the tournament, not the woman who had been in it with him. Right then, Gwen, the Zaunite Eagle of Aeon, was all he cared for.

"Hm." Gwen said, crossing her arms and looking the man over again. Perhaps she was placing too much trust in him just because he was polite and complimented her. He seemed a little secretive, and wanted to pry more into Gwen, without giving any information about himself. She gave him a cross look.

"Is this the part where I'm supposed to swoon and submit to your whims?" Gwen asked, cocking her head quite disturbed by the thought. "You've given me nothing more than a name, and sure mystery might work on some other floozy, but you're talking to the wrong girl." Gwen turned, ready to leave. She wasn't sure what would cause a person to be so secretive, but his attempts to be deep and insightful were clearly mating calls, or so that was her interpretation of them.

”Kelioux,” he says simply to her turned back, with an amused smile, hoping that would stop her from going, but not putting any faith in it. He relaxed his stance, realizing the battle was done before it had even began. He tucked his thumbs into his pants pockets and looked to her simply.

”But not according to Kelioux,” he explains, his smile shifting to a smirk. He certainly didn't look Keliouxian. He was short and his hair was a flaming red that vastly contrasted the image one got of an Academy student. He was from there however, that much could not be changed, no matter how much the masters wished it. He was not one to lie about himself, but he did find the question superficial. What could knowing about his birthplace tell her about him? She could make assumptions true, based on stereotypes and the like, but none of them would be true.

He took a moment, looking back around the stadium then sighed. He walked back across the arena, towards her because that was where the exit closest to where Juch was. When he got next to her he smiled once more. ”You are a beautiful woman, and I am prone to flirt, but my interest in you had nothing to do with getting in your pants,” he says, then gives her a soft nod, before walking past. Oh, Yan was a whore, this much was true. He would sleep with anything that wanted him. It had pretty much been proven. But, that was the key: The person had to want him. If they didn’t, he wouldn’t try a thing, but he was a collector of stories, and the Eagle of Aeon might have been a good one. Perhaps he would never know.

"Ugh," Gwen sighed, "Always so cryptic. Can't boys just say what they mean and tell the truth? Honestly." Gwen huffed, not really talking to Yan, just commenting on how he'd treated her. She didn't really know what he meant 'Kelioux but not according to Keliouxians'. What the heck could that even mean? Was he exiled?

"Hey Yan!" She called out, turning back towards him, "Don't be such a butthead next time a pretty girl asks you questions, 'kay?" She said, sticking out her tongue and bringing two fingers to her brow. She was just teasing now, and she knew it. He called her beautiful, and now she had that to hold over his head. Forever.

If he knew Walid, than that meant when she tracked him down, she'd probably be seeing him again as well. She didn't know really how she felt about the meeting with him, only that he was strange. He didn't seem to want to answer personal questions, but at the same time he didn't seem the type to have anything to hide. Yan was either very dangerous, or just a little strange.

Still, she didn't think he was a monster. No, much too handsome to be a monster.

Yan laughed a little at her first bit, but he didn’t turn back to her, his hands finding their way back into his pockets as he walked. When she called out to him, he did pause, glancing over his shoulder still with his curious expression. She called him a butthead and he laughed again, shaking his head.

”Next time don’t give up so easily,” he offers in turn. ”You got the answer pretty easily when you think about it.” Yan wasn’t much for answering personal questions the first go, and maybe that was a bad habit. He could count the number of people who knew he was from Kelioux on one hand. Hell, Juch didn’t even know, though he supposed the man had his guesses. The fact of the matter was, if she had stopped him and asked what he meant, he would have told her. It was almost the same thing with his flirtations. If someone really wanted to know, he’d tell them. The fact she didn’t press meant to him that she didn’t really want to know. He wasn’t trying to be a mystery, he simply didn’t want to waste his breath for someone who would simply forget him.

”Good bye, Gwen,” he calls, lifting his hand over his head in a small wave.
