Zangya found herself now somewhere near the Third Residential Deck common area. It was just after 1400 so wandering around for a while seemed mildly necessary. She counted the steps from one place to another, carefully adding to her mental map of the station. While doing this she pondered Helana's parting advice, wondering if punctuality is a virtue, what is being an hour too early. Probably nosy, but Zangya was simply filled with such curiosity about the group she was almost a part of. The way the "boss" had been referred to was so odd. It was like they didn't want to call them that. Who was the boss, why did the few Sairosen who did say it seem so reluctant to acknowledge that. That could be a really bad thing from her perspective. Then there was the nagging feeling that this group was really different from the gangs on the station. How they were different, she was not sure yet, but definitely set apart in some way to the point of not even seeming like a gang really. Maybe it was the odd impression of honesty Zangya had picked up. At any rate in less than an hour she would have a better sample to consider. She would continue to explore for a while longer, not straying far from the appointed location until a slightly more reasonable time. So far she hadn't seen anyone else really in the area, which seemed a bit strange for a place a meal was soon to take place. She had triple checked the location to ensure participation. Her curiosity was killer, but satisfaction would soothe that. WC: 273/273 |

“Has the deck been swept?” the voice came around the corner to touch Zangya’s ears. It was the familiar authoritarian, but notably young tones of Helana. “Twice over at this point. The drones are nearly done splicing in the new ventilation system. Another few hours should see it sealed done.” The cutting accent of damaskian heritage responded with something of a very distant distaste. “Thank you, Nellic. And the seals for the doors and elevator shafts?” There was a softer note to the thanks than one would have expected from such a simple report. The shrug was almost audible, “They will have to wait for a few days. Having too many drones active in one area of the station will draw too much attention. Siberius might know his place for now, but it chafes him. It’s better not to antagonize him into poking around places he doesn’t belong.” Nellic’s voice paused for a moment and the lull was filled with a series of digital pings. “Once the ventilation is done, the drones will cycle back through their normal maintenance routines. They will reach this level’s primary elevators in about four days. The diagnostic systems have already been pre-programmed to register a mechanical flaw that will need immediate repair. The door seals will be easy enough to fold into the repair quarantine they will set up. It will all look natural if we are patient.” “Of course. If you think it will make any difference, extend it to the second cycle pass through. We have at least another few weeks of preparations yet - and that is assuming . . .” her voice trailed off into silence. “Being the first to arrive certainly has its benefits.” Helana called out to the corner she expected Zangya to appear from. The two women were sitting back in bucket seat style chairs of chromed metal lined with thin red cushions of velvet. Over a dozen other identical chairs floated leglessly around a long table set with seemingly matching red placemats and empty bowls of deep black material. The center of the table was lined with several candelabra made from seeming the same substance as the bowls - each of their outstretched arms held tall red candles burning with a small, strange flame like shimmering silver. There didn’t seem to be anyone else around, or even any indication of activity except a series of mechanical grindings and the almost constant hissing of welding torches muffled by walls and distance. Yepp, nosy was the impression that being an hour too early created. Dumb did not seem to be the reaction favored by Helena, so at least Zangy felt no need to cover up that she had heard some very interesting snippets of conversation. She felt though an extremely pressing need to tread the next few a statements very carefully. “I hope the benefit comes at not too high a cost. It seems difficult to explore this area much and I wished to embody the virtue of punctuality. This made wandering far an undesirable option.” And oh boy this did not seem like a shindig Zangya wanted to miss. As she walked into the hall from around the corner, her eyes widened, beholding the long table and its enchanting service. It mesmerized her and made the feelings of ominous foreboding and thrilling anticipation rise up within her. |
