A young Xaphiel kicked a soccer ball in and out between his legs, swiftly gliding across the turf. He wore his favorite black hoodie with short sleeves and his black shorts with cleats on his feet. His plump little eight year old face wore a great, big smile over it and the boy was having the time of his life just hanging out with some friends at the park in his city. He would kick it to them, passing it and fro, with no real goal. Just a good time passing the ball around.

His dad was watching from a bench, while also enjoying a book. He wore a two piece suit, all black, but with a grey tie. He had square framed glasses and a very clean cut hairstyle. His mustache was thick, but also clean cut. He would just peer over the top of the pages from time to time, making sure that his son was still okay and most of all, that he was still where he left him. The child’s laughter filled the air and they continued to pass the ball around to each other. It eventually would evolve into a game of trying to steal the ball from the holder.

“You’re gonna have to be quicker than that!” Xaphiel jeered, as one of his friends would aggressively come in for a steal. Xaphiel was able to maneuver the ball with his feet and side step them with a sense of fluidity before running off with it in the opposite direction. He laughed as he did so, not noticing that another one of his friends was coming in for a slide tackle and knocked it straight out of his possession. This caused him to stumble forward and trip over the ball, landing face first.

His friends all laughed together and continued their game, now with someone else holding onto the ball. Xaphiel winced a bit, looking back down at his scraped knee and his elbow, as well. A bit of blood, but nothing to cry about. His father looked over the pages of his book once more and Xaphiel looked up to meet his gaze. They locked eyes for a minute, and Xaphiel immediately stopped his wincing to hop to his feet. He then smirked confidently at his father, his eyes watering a bit trying to feign off any pain. The boy looked away and then dashed back off to get back into the game.

Xaphiel’s father grinned himself and shook his head before, readjusting his glasses on his face and looking back down at the words in his book. That boy is something else..

The boys continued going hard, playing at it and eventually even setting up goals to have themselves a game. This was a perfect day for the kid, no other way he liked to spend his summer vacations. It would beat the seemingly infinite amount of days he spent going to his stuffy private school by a longshot every time. It was like hell to him, so he really cherished these days. However, his father insisted that his son get the absolute best education possible. He wanted to avoid his son entering his own profession and would see to it that it was done by any means necessary.

If it meant that his son would resent him or that his pockets ran dry, so be it. Anything for the health and longevity of his son. With the boy’s mother being gone, his father had not found it in himself to love another yet and wasn’t sure that he ever would. For him, this was just it. Xaphiel was the only thing that really kept him going. He would do positively whatever it took to keep Xaphiel safe.

Safe from what?

His father’s phone would ring and although it wasn’t very loud at all, the sound always happened to catch the attention of Xaphiel if he were nearby. Because he knew what it meant, more often than not. He was in the middle of making a play on the grassy, makeshift football field and froze just as he was supposed to be open for a cross to finish the goal attempt. The ball rolled entirely by him as his teammates would groan in disapproval.

”Awww, c’mon, Xaph!!...” they shouted at him, his gaze still on his father who was now already on the phone and talking with the caller that was unknown to Xaphiel. The boy ignored his friends entirely, who were still trying to get his attention.

”What, now??.. Erm.. yes. Sorry, sir. Yes, I can be there shortly… Yes, sir..” With that, the other line immediately clicked on his father and he set the phone back down. He motioned for Xaphiel to come to him, whom he already knew was watching him from the grass field. Xaphiel dashed off, waving back to his friends on his way. “Sorry, guys.. ! Gotta go!”

Of course, they forgave him. He was one of the most well liked children amongst his peers and often times, they would worship the ground he walked on. It was almost annoying, even. As he got closer, his father was tucking his phone back into his left pocket of his blazer and standing back to his feet. He smiled down at his son and placed his hand on his head to scruffle up his hair a little bit playfully. Xaphiel grumbled a bit, annoyed bit and swatted his father’s hand away before following him back to their car.

“Where we goin’, Dad? Who was that?” Xaphiel asked, although he really already knew what the answer would be. It was the same as it always was. It never really changed. It wasn’t like his father often had anything else of importance to do and if it ever caused him to leap up in such a hurry, it was almost always the same answer each time.

”Business, Xaphiel.”

Of course.

With that, the two climbed into the vehicle, Xaph hopping into the backseat and strapping himself in before sulking into the corner of the seat with his chin tucked into his hand in a sort of mopey position. His father sat into the driver’s seat and let out a deep sigh, looking into the rearview mirror at his apparently disappointed son. He then gave him a warm smile and reassured him, ”We will be back another time, your friends won’t be going anywhere. And this run will be a quick one. I promise!”

Xaphiel didn’t budge an inch. He remained in the same position and continued to sulk. Of course he just didn’t believe his father’s promise and rightfully so. It wasn’t the first time it was made and it wouldn’t be the first time it was broken. He scoffed at the promise and turned his nose up even further while looking out the window at his friends who got to continue playing. How crappy was it that they got to continue enjoying their day while he was stuck having to play ridealong with his old man to do whatever hell it was he had to do all the time?

“Yeah, whatever you say, dad..” He responded, as his father turned his view from the road and once again back to his son through the car’s mirror. He couldn’t help but feel overwhelming guilt. He fully understood why his son would be so upset. His job often robbed Xaphiel of time not just between them, but also between Xaphiel and his friends. It wasn’t fair to suck a kid’s childhood dry like that so much, but without his mother around, it wasn’t easy. Also, his father was not the type to burden or inconvenience others, so he certainly didn’t have any plans to hand Xaphiel off to a parent at the park. Nor did he trust anyone enough. So, when it was time for him to get up and move, Xaphiel would just to tag along. The pains of always being on call for work.

So, his father would have to grit his teeth and keep on moving. One day, Xaphiel would come to understand.

His phone would ring again, but this time he would ignore the call. No sense answering a phone call that would just rush him. Wasn’t going to get him to his destination any sooner and would actually probably only serve as a hindrance.

They drove for about another twenty minutes before arriving where they needed to be. It was a rather shady looking area, and very unlike any place his father had pulled up with him in the car before. This must have been urgent.

Xaphiel observed the area as his father would look back at him. ”.. Look, Xaph…” his father began, as Xaphiel reluctantly looked up to look at him. Just as his father was opening his mouth again to speak, Xaphiel’s eyes widened as a flash of light was beginning to glow in the not so off distance. He couldn’t quite make out what it was, but he could see it was emitting from a shadowy figure that looked like it was a person. Before his father could notice it for himself, it was too late and the light was heading toward the car in a sort of direct beam. He tried to shout a warning, “Dad.. !”

As his dad heard, he turned his head around to look but it was too late.

The beam made it’s impact with the vehicle and immediately the car was sent flying a few feet before tumbling back down and across the pavement, rolling at least six times. The blast would send both Xaphiel and his father flying out from the car, which would end up completely totalled and mangled, crashed into one of the buildings which looked like an old, abandoned liquor store or corner store.

Debris had still been raining from the sky and Xaphiel had been knocked unconscious for quite a bit. When he had finally come to, he opened his eyes and had to wipe some blood from his face in order to see, as it had covered a lot of his hair that was in his face. After doing so, he could finally see.

Instantly, he regretted having opened his eyes. He closed them once again, hoping that it was just a nightmare. The pain he felt physically paled in comparison to the pain he felt emotionally at the sight before him. His father had been completely decimated, his body so obviously limp and devoid of life. He dangled over another car before sliding down off of it and onto the ground. His eyes remained open, as he fell and his gaze happened to meet with that of his son’s.

Posted Image

Xaphiel eyes welled up with tears as he could see a man walking away from his father’s corpse and the child could hear him laughing a bit. They tucked their hands in their pockets and walked away nonchalantly as if they’d done nothing more than a chore. Like they had just taken out the trash. Not a hint of guilt or remorse. It was even closer to the idea that maybe they’d enjoyed what they had just done.

Xaphiel groaned as he tried to drag himself toward his father, his eyes now completely filled with tears. “Dad.. D-Daddd…”

He tried crying out to him, but the words could hardly escape him. He’d already had trouble breathing, as some of his ribs had undoubtedly been broken, as well as several other bones. His lung may have been collapsed, also. It was a miracle that he’d even survived, let alone that he was even able to slightly pull himself across the ground. His tears continued, sobbing his way trying to make his words come out and partly still trying to make sense of this. This, which still had to be some sort of nightmare. It couldn’t be happening.

Having dragged himself as close as he could, he would again start to lose consciousness. His tears would turn to those of rage as he now looked up to see this man just casually strolling away from the mess he had made. Every fiber of Xaphiel’s being ached for vengeance, but his chance was just slowly and callously making it’s way out of his reach. Between the exhaustion of his own emotions and the dragging of his own half dead body, he would just fade into a complete blackness.

There was nothing more he could do. Surely, this had to be the end. He would meet his father on the other side and also be reunited with his mother. It couldn’t be all bad. They could all finally be together again. Just how his other dreams were. His dreams of better days. It was all so close.

”Xaph, wake up.. ! I’ve got something to show you! Come on, get up..!”

The professor prodded at Xaphiel’s cold body with his cane, poking harder each time. A lit cigarette hung from his lip, a plume cloud of smoke blew off in Xaphiel’s direction. The stench of the thing was what woke him from his stasis more so than all of the racket Strider was making trying to get him up. Xaphiel rose up from his bed, feeling his internal systems starting to come to life just any actual organs might start to pick up again. He then rubbed his face and stretched his arms out, before looking at Strider. Xaphiel was still in strictly boxer shorts and would have to get dressed. He looked at Strider with a look of detest, as he absolutely hated being woken up by anything but his own free will.

“Strider.. Do you really have to do that crap inside?” he asked, referring to the cigarette. The smell always pissed him off more than anything else about this place.

”Well, it ain’t like the second hand smoke is gonna kill ya..”

Xaphiel groaned and slid off of his bed and into his slippers as he passed his way over toward his armoire. “Yeah, well, the smell just might. Just give it a break, will you? And in my room, no less? If I see a drop of ash in here..”

Just as he said it, Strider’s cigarette which had been burning for quite sometime without being ashed finally caved and dropped a chunk of cash directly onto Xaphiel’s carpet. It was like he could see it in slow motion and even saw the impact of it on the carpet. Immediately, he knew that would leave yet another gross, grey ass stain. “Dammit, Strider, what the hell --”

Strider then began hobbling his way out of Xaphiel’s room and outward toward his lab. ”Yeah, yeah.. I’ll clean it up, come on.. I have to show you something, get your ass out here.”

Xaphiel watched the old man coolly walk out of the room at an eased pace and groaned before cursing under his breath. He reached into his armoire and grabbed one of his dozens of black shirts before shutting it again. He then grabbed some of the aerospray that he had sitting on his nightstand beside his bed and basically bombed the room with it in hopes of getting rid of some of that putrid tobacco odor.

After he’d almost basically emptied the entire canister, he tossed what remained back behind him and onto his bed before heading out of his room to follow Strider. He tucked his hands into his pajama pants and shut his eyes as he walked. He just wanted to get this over with, as it was probably nothing at all important. Strider always thought he was making some kind of grand discovery or something. Half of the time, it was some new insect or some other crap that Xaphiel just simply didn’t care much about or for.
Still, he obliged. It kept the old man happy. He arrived in Strider’s lab and the old man was already sitting at his desk looking up at his computer. On the screen, he brought up a map of their galaxy and then zoomed in on a certain planet. As he did, a drop down scroll opened up on-screen and revealed the name of the planet, as well as a bunch of archived information. The information included the environment, inhabitants and their populations, as well as various other miscellaneous information.

“What is this.. ?” Xaphiel asked him, his curiosity actually having been piqued at this point.

Strider grinned with joy at the sight of Xaphiel being interested. ”Glad you should ask. This, my boy, is Avalon. This is where you’ll be going to continue your journey of evolution.”

Xaphiel dropped his eyes from the screen and back down to Strider who was beaming with delight upon him, his smile creating even more creases on his wrinkly face. ”That is what you wanted, isn’t it? You said you wanted to test the lengths of your power, right?”

Xaphiel nodded, and shrugged, “Well, yeah..--”

”Great.. ! That is where you’ll want to head. Their advancements in cybernetics when it comes to cyborgs and just about anything else is far beyond anything that I’d be capable here on Earth with the resources I’m dealt. There’s also no way I would be able to make the trip to get what I would need to experiment with you, myself. You’d be better off taking the journey all your own. You understand?”

Xaphiel just continued to look at Strider. It was all a bit much to take in and he just couldn’t come up with the words to respond. So, instead, he would just nod. Surely he could figure out just exactly what to do somewhere down the road. Strider then slapped his hands together in a quick clap before hopping to his feet. He was quite spry suddenly, probably from the excitement. “Perfect! Now, that’s not all I wanted to show you.. I’m sure you were wondering just how you were going to get there.. !”

Strider then walked over a few yards to a panel that was on a wall just next to a large, steel plated sliding door. He typed in a series of letters and numbers before pressing ‘execute’ and the large door began to slide open slowly but smoothly. ”You’re gonna love this..”

As the door opened, Xaphiel could sort of peer into the room which looked to be a hangar of sorts. Not exactly large, but big enough to fit what Strider had housed inside of it. ”Voila.. !”

Strider exclaimed, presenting Xaphiel a ship. It was spherical looking and was actually pretty huge. Definitely the size of maybe a medium sized condo. “You did this.. ?”

”Well, it was a fixer-upper, but I added on some features and still am. Even repainted it and what not. Well, the drones helped. But, you get the idea. Now, I hadn’t named her yet, I was going to leave that up to you.. “

“I don’t know what to say.” Xaphiel said softly, before turning his sight from the ship and back to Strider. “Thanks, pops. You never cease to amaze.”

”Heck, anything to get ya outta here.” he jested, not too good with accepting thank yous. ”I’ll expect you to bring me some souvenirs, of course. I’ll have a grocery list ready? “

Strider paced around the ship for a moment before preparing to open it up with a remote he held in his hand. ”Come, let me give you the grand tou--”

Strider was interrupted when a low toned sound started ringing out from his lab’s computer, sounding like an alarm. That usually only went off if something was nearing or having already entered the Earth’s atmosphere. Was this it.. ?

[dohtml]<iframe width="80" height="75" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qKF4hD3cpUc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>[/dohtml]

Xaphiel dashed off back into the laboratory with Strider slow, but close behind. Once he got in the lab, he looked up at the screen and the computer would confirm his fears. Something was headed their way. It wasn’t moving particularly fast, but it was massive and it was definitely headed for Earth. “Damn it..”

Strider had know idea what it was, as Xaphiel hadn’t even mentioned it to him yet. However, the cyborg was pretty convinced that this was it. If it wasn’t, then it surely meant more problems compiling on top of what he had already somewhat expected. Still, this was well beyond expectations. Not to mention, they had to be at least a little bit early. “Shit, this is bad..”

Strider adjusted his glasses while looking at the screen and attempted to zoom in as much as he could on the object in the atmosphere. He was linked into one of the government’s satellites that had been orbiting the planet and would zoom as much as possible without sacrificing too much visual quality. He had to make out what it was. ”Xaph.. ? You know something about this ship?”

Xaphiel’s eyes widened and his heart sank as he looked away from the screen sharply. There was no denying it, now. This was definitely it. Why is that ship so damn huge?

“She didn’t say anything about that..” he murmured to himself under his breath. The self doubt was beginning to rush over him. There was no way he could take this on by himself. He could even sense the energy of those onboard as the ship got closer. It was certainly not only three souls onboard as he had expected. Not even close. Earth may have been in serious peril. “This isn’t right..”

”Xaphiel, what are you talking about?! Who didn’t say anything!”

Xaphiel raised his gaze from the ground and unclenched his tightly squeezed fist to look back at Strider. Xaphiel began to explain everything that he knew about the situation.

“I had a dream..”
