Greenville was a small, quaint town with old grey-brick houses and plenty of character. The houses were sparsely arrayed, with farmland interspersed among the houses to grow crops. Ox had come here before, both to visit and more often just passing through. He was running an errand for Master Roshi, whom he had very recently come under the tutelage of again, and had surprised Ox given his older age. Roshi had seen something in him though, the same thing he had seen in him when he was a boy, after Ox had fought and barely defeated a powerful martial artist who was attempting to rob a bank. With a renewed sense of purpose and meaning, Ox strode with a self-confidence he had not felt in years. Ox needed to stop by at Greenville for a break, some food and supplies. Underneath his white shirt remained a few bandages around his torso, and his face still bore the remnants of a bruise, all from his fight with the martial artist who tried to rob a bank. As Ox strode through the quaint little roads of the town, he found an attractive little cafe. Buying a sandwich and a coffee, he sat down at a table, his huge mass threatening to snap the chair underneath him. He seemed unperturbed however, and ate his meal in silence while reading the local newspaper. The cafe door opened and four rough-looking men walked in wearing biker jackets. They looked oddly out of place for a quaint town such as this. Ox noticed that in the corner of each of the men's left eye, was a small tattoo, about half an inch long, of a snake. While Ox was at first intrigued, he concluded that they must just be passing through like he was, and went back to his newspaper. He saw a headline that caught his eye, VIPER GANG TERRORISES GREENVILLE As Ox scanned the article, of particular note was a this, "...gang members are easily identified by the viper tattoo located near their left eye." Ox stopped reading, and looked up at the men again. They were now sitting at a table, waiting to be served, and no, he was not imagining it, they did indeed have snake tattoos by their left eye. Ox furrowed his brows in concern, not entirely sure what course of action he should take. Oh, so you're a hero now, are you?, came his thoughts. No, I'm not... there's no need for me to do anything. What could I achieve? This can be left to the police, or some other vigilante. Ox continued to eat and drink in silence, going back to the newspaper and trying to forget he saw anything. As the waitress came forward to serve them, she quite obviously looked uncomfortable, and clearly knew they were Viper gang members. They caught Ox's eye again as they began blowing kisses at the waitress. They laughed among themselves, "Come on baby let's go for a party!" She became visibly even more uncomfortable, and could only nervously laugh, not daring to say no to them. Things became worse as one grabbed her hand, and she instinctively pulled her hand away. The mood of the gang members suddenly changed, "Why you gotta be like that? We're only fooling around, girl." They grabbed her hand again, and she pulled her hand away, again, and the gang members visibly became more irritated. Who knew what they'd do next. Ox did not want to find out. He should have acted sooner. "Alright fellas, why don't you leave the nice lady alone?" Ox stood up to his full height of 10 feet, crouching inside the little cafe. The gang members were taken aback by his huge size, but soon regained their composure, as one of them, seemingly the leader of the four, spoke out, "Or you gonna do what, tubby?" Ox chuckled, "How about we take this outside?" He had a newfound confidence now, especially after training with Master Roshi for a short while, but he needed to be on his guard, he couldn't risk underestimating them. The gang members said nothing, stood up and left, beckoning Ox to follow. Ox complied, and squeezed himself out the door and into the small secluded street that had brought him there. What was once a quaint, picturesque alley was now a dangerous one with no eyewitnesses or security cameras. This did not bother Ox however, and he stood to his full height in the street as the four gang members gathered around them. There was no warning as one immediately charged, knife in hand. Ox had to act quickly, his fist coming forward and slamming the gang member across the head before he could reach him with his knife. Fortunately for Ox, his large size ensured his long arms could have a pretty good reach before they'd get to him. The gang member was knocked to the ground hard, knocked out cold. Ox had to be careful not to kill them, he wasn't dealing with super-powered martial artists here, but your common everyday criminal. Ox had to keep moving, and the gang members were clearly surprised by his speed as he whipped around and grabbed another gang member, throwing him hard at a house, the gang member crashing through a window. Oops. Ox then turned to the remaining two gang members, both of whom stood there with their mouths agape. One drew a pistol out from his pocket, but before he could even lift it up Ox had already jumped into the air and landed on the poor sod. Ouch. The last remaining gang member gulped, and looked Ox up and down. He still had his small knife drawn, but began taking a few steps back. "Screw this." Dropping his knife to the ground he turned around and ran for his life. He was horrified to hear loud running behind him, each bound making a thud as it hit the ground. Ox was quickly gaining on the criminal, his deceptive size masking his impressive speed. His training with Roshi was going well, and he was able to run at least as fast as your average athlete. He could not fly yet, however, but these things would come with time, Ox was sure. The fact he was even training with Roshi again, and was now on the tail of a criminal, would have been an unbelievable thought to him just a few weeks ago. Ox made one final leap through the sky, and landed in front of the gang member, pivoting around to face him. Before the gang member could do anything, Ox was already grabbing him with one hand, and pushed him hard against the nearby brick wall. "Who are you? Who do you work for? Where are they based?" "Man, I don't know what you're talking about, c'mon," "What is your name?" "J-Lin, my name is J-Lin." "Okay J-Lin, and who do you work for?" "C'mon man just let me go," Ox seemed to ease his grip, pulling the man back, but then pushing him forward again and tightening his grip, slamming him against the brick wall so hard it began to crack. The man cried out in pain. "Okay okay man, you crazy or what? Our boss is Shao." "And where is Shao based?" "Man, he's gonna kill me if I say this," "And what do you think I will do if you don't?" With these words Ox looked more menacing than he had in years. Gone was the soft cuddly granddad, and here was a giant of a man who sought to reclaim his title as a warrior-king. It had the intended effect, and the criminal's eyes widened with fear, "Hedgerow Street... the Emerald inn... we're in the basement." "You've been too kind." Ox let go of the criminal, who turned and ran, tripping up at one point and falling head-first onto the road. Ox shook his head, and walked back towards the town. As he walked back to the other unconscious gang members, the police were already at the scene, arresting them. One of the policemen gave Ox a nod, evidently having heard the story from the waitress, and Ox nodded back and continued on. A short, rotund man was also on the scene, having a bald head and a curly moustache. He ran up to Ox, "Oh, I heard what you did! Thank you so much. I'm the mayor of this town, and it pains me to see what has become of it. We have a real problem. If you could please help us again, and get rid of these goons once and for all-" "I'm already on it." Ox continued to walk past the mayor, and towards the signpost that pointed in Hedgerow Street's direction. It was not a long distance, and after about five minutes of walking he found himself outside the Emerald inn. The building had an attractive green hue to its bricks, as the name might have suggested, and the sign for the inn had a dragon curled up into what looked like an emerald. Ox walked up the steps and entered. The place looked quite ordinary for an inn, and was quite active at this time of the day, in the evening. There were quite a few people drinking and eating, and Ox walked up to the bartender, "Could I visit your wine cellar and see your collection?" The bartender looked over his shoulder in the corner, and then looked back at Ox "...What a strange question, I can just list you what I have-" "No worries, I know where it is now." Ox walked in the direction the bartender was looking, in the corner of inn. He noticed the cellar door on the floor, and could feel a few eyes looking at him as he did near it. Well, no time like the present. Ox jumped as high as he could in this cramped inn, and landed hard on the cellar door, crashing through the wooden door. He only had a split second to take in his surroundings, and as he was still landing he noticed a dankly lit room with four men sitting inside. They were not like the other gang members, but looked a lot older, and were wearing golden chains with vipers attached. It did not take a genius to guess this was the command structure, and the brains behind the operation. As Ox landed, he stood up and grinned, "Time to cut off the head of the snake." Ox charged forward, and he would be lying if he said he did not enjoy the thrill and rush of battle. He felt young again, and although his bandaged body still ached from his previous fight, adrenalin took care of most of the pain. Ox picked up the remains of the wooden cellar door as he ran, and smashed into one of the men with the wooden door in front of him. The men were clearly still in shock, but by now had managed to at least draw their knives. Ox charged at another, and the gang elder could only uselessly poke the wooden door with a knife as Ox charged with it in front of him, and slammed the elder against the wall. Two down, two to go. Ox turned to final two, though one of them seemed strangely calm, and had not even drawn a weapon. Ox's attention could not stay on that one for long though, as the other was charging at him with spinning nunchucks. They were not the easiest to dodge, and Ox growled in pain as the nunchucks slammed into his torso, hitting his bandaged area and opening up the wounds underneath. Ox raised his fists, and then with a snarl his right fist came flying forward, avoiding the nunchucks and slamming his opponent in the face, sending him to the ground unconscious. And now here was the final opponent. He was a bald muscular man, and could only smile. "Let me guess. Shao?" "You guess correctly. I will have to kill the whelp who coughed that up." "I am afraid you will not get the chance to. I'm taking you in." Shao laughed, "Sure, go ahead and try." Shao had backed himself against a wall, his hand reaching down below and pressing a switch. A drawer suddenly slid out from the wall, with an assault rifle inside. Shao pulled it out quick, and Ox began to charge, but it was too late, Shao was already aiming the rifle at him and began to fire. Ox could move quick, but he did not move quick enough to dodge bullets. His body veered off to the right to avoid the weapon, and he growled in pain as a bullet scraped the side of his torso. The cellar was large, and there were many barrels and bottles of various alcohol lying around, in rows of shelves. Ox scrambled to one of the rows. Ox sat around the corner, clutching his side and panting. "Come out come out, big man." Shao laughed and began spraying the assault rifle in all directions as he walked past the shelves of alcohol. Ox ducked his head to not be caught by a stray bullet. How was he supposed to get out of this one? He was strong, but not strong enough to take on bullets without, well, dying. As Ox sat there, he stared at the bottles around him, one of them labelled "80 proof rum". Perfect. Ox grabbed one of the bottles, and swung around the corner to face Shao. The man laughed, and pulled down on the trigger again to fire. Ox chucked the rum bottle at Shao, and dived back behind the corner again. As the rum bottle flew through the air, and neared Shao, a stray bullet caught it, piercing through the glass and- Boom. The rum caught alight and the bottle exploded, Shao could be heard crying out in pain as his face and body were burned, but since it was only a bottle this was not serious. Ox did not waste any time as he ran forward and grabbed Shao, delivering a blow to the head that knocked him out cold. Ox then dropped Shao to the ground, and let out a deep breath as it was finally over. -------- Ox was now outside the Emerald inn, and politely smiled as the mayor thanked him, "Oh thank you! With the Viper's command gone, they have nothing, no purpose, no tactics, our police can take care of the rest. You have brought peace back to Greenville," the mayor then beckoned over the media, "Please, let's take a picture for the camera, me and you. You never told me your name?" "There's no need." Ox raised a hand to stop any oncoming media. He could not stop having pictures taken of him, but he was not about to stand around and pose for them like some celebrity. He was not a celebrity. He was just running errands for Master Roshi, and he could not sit in that cafe and do nothing. That was it, he kept reminding himself. Regardless, Ox felt good. He could never have imagined he would be doing what he is doing now. Gathering up his things from the cafe, he made his way back to the road, and back to running errands. WC: 2,566 |
