Goten was awoken by the incessant buzzing of his alarm clock. The half-breed breathed out an audible groan as he rolled over in his bed to reach his arm across to the night stand and shut it off. He sat up on his bed and let out a loud yawn, then stretched his arms out. After he wiped the sleep from his eyes he stood up from his bed and turned toward the window to open the blinds. The blazing sun illuminated his small, modest room within his one story family home. The room that he occupied actually wasn't technically his room, it had once belonged to his brother, whom moved out not long after his father left. Which in turn, left the halfing stuck with....

"Goten! Breakfast is ready!"

.....her.

Goten loved his mother, and he would never dare speak ill of her. Okay, that was a lie. He constantly spoke ill of her. But that was only because he didn't like her. She was extremely overbearing, invasive, annoying, and so much more. He knew that she ultimately wanted what was best for him, or at least, what she thought was best for him. When his father left to do whatever his father liked to do, she seemed to have accepted it. He was a free spirit, a traveling martial artists, who loved to pass down his techniques to his children. Goten didn't learn as much as Gohan did, but he still did learn quite a bit.

Unfortunately, Gohan left home much to their mother's dismay, as she had high hopes for him to one day become a scholar. That in turn put an insurmountable amount of pressure on Goten to become what Gohan could not. Couple that with the fact that his father and brother were so quick to leave him and his mother behind, and you had a recipe for deeply rooted bitterness.

Luckily for Goten, he had a rather nice, comfortable, and stable job as an IT Technician at a local office in South City. It wasn't his first choice, but he was very glad that he made the decision to go for the job. The work was extremely easy, and the pay was modest but more than adequate enough for his lifestyle.

The halfing got dressed in his more formal work attire, which consisted of a white-collared button-up shirt made of cotton material, as well as some slacks and dress shoes. He wasn't very fond of dressing up at first, but the more he did it, the more comfortable he became with doing it.
Goten gingerly approached the kitchen and was greeted by the wonderful smell of his mother's cooking. She had made several stacks of pancakes, as well as some bacon, scrambled eggs, french toast, and hard-boiled eggs. Curiously, she had set the table for four, instead of just one.

She often did it in the past when she believed that her husband and eldest son would return. It took quite awhile for Goten to finally convince her that they would never come back, so why was she doing it again?

"Mom, they're not coming back," Goten didn't like beating around the bush very much.

His mother, whom was facing away from him at the kitchen sinking wiping off her plate, simply said, "I know."

Goten blinked.

He hesitated, but only briefly. He didn't know if it would be right to proceed and get into a pointless argument with her again, but this wasn't an issue that he wanted to come home to later in the day.

If they were going to argue, then they were going to do it now.

"If you knew then you would stop doing it," Goten asserted. His tone was sharp, so sharp in fact, that his mother "accidentally" dropped the plate that she was washing in the sink, which in turn snapped in two.

"I think you know better than to use that kind of tone when speaking to your mother, Goten," She said as she casually disposed of the bisected plate.

Goten sighed heavily.

Alright so, they weren't going to get anywhere. As soon as she turned the issue back on to him, that meant that she was in denial, and that there was no use in continuing the conversation. Maybe she was just having an episode, and perhaps tomorrow she wouldn't do it again. She did have relapses, so he opted to give her the benefit of the doubt.

"Yea, whatever. Look, I gotta go, save the breakfast for tomorrow and don't worry about dinner. I'll be in late tonight," Goten said as he headed to the door. Talking with his mom always made him lose his appetite.

"Are you going to go out with that girl?" His mother asked.

Goten stopped just short of the front door. There she was again, sticking her nose into his business. He had been seeing someone for a long time now, but he had never brought her home due to the fact that his mother wasn't in the best mental state. He did mention his girlfriend to his mother as a courtesy to her, but whenever he came home late, she always attributed it to her.

"And so what if I am?" Goten shot back at her.

"Goten...." His mother glared daggers at him. She was running out of patience, and he knew it. One more push, and she would let him have it. They couldn't go one day without arguing. Not one single day. How the hell did his dad ever put up with her? How did Gohan? Or maybe they couldn't, and that's why they left. Well, all they did was make it worse for him. It wasn't always this bad back when he was in high school, and especially not back when Gohan and his father were at home too. But things had become more and more unbearable for him.

But he had to sigh heavily and reel himself back in.

They could go back and forth forever, and now certainly was not the time for that. He had to get to work soon.

"Yes, I'm seeing her later tonight. And no, it's none of your business what we end up doing. I like to keep my relationship private. Is that fair?"

He turned to face his mother, and it was at that time he realized just how old she actually was. She had deep creases and wrinkles across her visage. It gave her a very grandmotherly aura about her. Almost as if she could croak at any moment. Her hair was a complete mess, and her body was extremely frail and skinny, as if she hadn't eaten in days. He wondered what would happen to her if he ever decided to leave her. What would she end up doing to herself? How would she react?

Or, would she ultimately take her own life? The thought was scary, and very unnerving. He didn't want to be the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. Though, she did something that was quite unusual even for her. Her lips curled upward in a...smile? Yea, she definitely smiled. When she did so, her face seemed to have gained a soulful glow to it, and her creases added to her beauty, it no longer took away from it.

The sight was a rare one, to the point where Goten was quite taken aback by her simple gesture.

"Yes," His mother conceded. "Yes, that's fair."

Goten turned away from her and opened the front door, but before he stepped out for the rest of the day, he felt the need to give his mother some much needed advice.

"Please, take better care of yourself."

The office that Goten worked in was a branch office of the Walter Tech Corporation. Walter Tech Corporation was a technological business that rose from the ashes of the Galactic War. They designed and created weapons used to not only combat the Steel Legion, but Saiyan occupants and other high powered threats as well. They also spent most of their money to research beings that utilized Ki in an attempt to understand them and best neutralize them. This caused for most fighters that knew how to control their Ki to go into hiding. Public displays of Ki control were not only looked down upon, but they were highly discouraged and the perpretrator could be percieved as a threat to civilization. As for Goten? Well, he had a different problem.

He could no longer use his Ki.

It was more than just rust. For some reason or another, he did not know how to control his Ki like he did when he was a little boy. Both his father and brother had trained him ever since that he could walk, so their teachings were ingrained within him. They taught him the fundamentals, such as flight. It did not take him long at all to grasp the concept of Ki due to his Saiyan heritage. But for him to have become utteraly cut off from its use, it was uncanny. An anamoly. While he sat at his work cubicle, he began to recall everything that he had been taught in his youth. First, he concentrated on his breathing.

He breathed through his nose, and he exhaled out of his mouth. It was a steady, continious task that aimed at calming one's mind. The sound of his coworkers chatterings, their fingers typing away on their keyboard and clicking on their mouse, they were all silenced. Next came visualization. This part was as simple as it was complex, but he was able to grasp the theory relatively well. As he breathed in, he imagined a blue flame forming in the pit of his stomach. With each breath, he pictured the flame growing larger and larger.

It didn't flicker or thrash about in his intestines. On the contrary, the flame was as calm as he was. It's growth was steady, and finally it had reached its height. The third and final part, was manifestation. He placed his arm on his desk and focused on his hand. He visualized a path for the blue flame to follow. It traveled from his stomach, and through his intestines, upwards towards his upper chest cavity. From there it deviated and made a sharp turn towards his right arm, and traveled through his muscles. He could the energy as it surged through him. It was a very warm and comforting feeling, as if he was enveloped by a blanket. Finally, the blue flame reached his hand, where it would manifest itself into a ball of light and float over his open palm.

Except it didn't.

There was no light, no manifestation of his Ki at all. There was simply nothing. Frustrated, Goten unplugged his mouse from his computer and threw it across the office, where it splattered in pieces against the wall and unceremoniously fell onto the carpeted floor.
He heard a sharp whistle eminate from the adjacent cubicle, followed by a lanky fellow who peaked into Goten's cubicle and gave him a concerned look.

"Everything okay Goten?" The man asked.

The Half-breed leaned back in his chair and gave an exasperated sigh. Why the hell couldn't he manifest his Ki anymore? It made no sense! He hated to say it, but there was only one person he could turn to for help, but he wasn't quite in the mood to deal with that perverted old hermit.

"Hello, Earth to Goten. Is everything okay?" The man asked once more. This time, he had walked around and perched his back against the wall that Goten had threw his mouse at.

Goten massaged the top of his nose with his index finger and thumb, then gave a rather loud exhale. It was becoming more and more difficult to keep his temper under control. To say that the source of this anger came down to nothing more than "abandonment issues" that stemmed from both his father and brother leaving him behind seemed far too trivial of an explanation. It shouldn't be uncommon for famalies to eventually drift apart as timed passed. Everyone had the right to go their own way and seek out whatever it was that they wanted in their life. Yet, the halfing couldn't help but think that the way Gohan and his father went about it was all wrong. To just up and vanish without so much as a goodbye was....

wrong.

If he ever saw them again, he'd definitely punch them in the face. Hell, he'd probably kill them. Not literally of course, they were still his family and he loved them. But, perhaps beating them within an inch of their lives wouldn't have been so bad either.

"I'm fine, just a bit frustrated is all," Goten said as he opened his eye lids.

The man peered down at what remained of the mouse that he threw. "Just a bit huh?" He said sarcastically as he approached Goten and placed his hand on his shoulder.

"Listen Goten, I'm worried about you alright? Ever since you've started working here you've seemed...." The man tried to choose his next word carefully. "....Off. It has been several months now and you don't seem to be getting any better. That's what, the sixth mouse this week alone."

Goten stared straight ahead at his blank computer monitor. How could he have let it come to this? He tried to keep his anger under wraps as much as he could. But now he had other people worried about him. Sure, it was his friend's job to be a little concerned, and he was never shy about voicing his opinions to the half-breed, but Goten did not like to have other people worried about him. The last thing he wanted to have was anyone's pity.

"I'm fine, Lawe," Goten removed his friend's hand from his shoulder.

Although he knew that Lawe's gesture was meant to be one of comfort, that still didn't change the fact that Goten simply did not like to be touched. At all. There was only one person that had earned that privledge and even she had gotten into the habit of asking for permission first.
Lawe adjusted his glasses with his fingers and gave Goten a curt nod.

He knew that Goten was rough around the edges, so to continue to try and probe him would only cause him to upset his friend even more, and that would be counter-productive to the result that he wanted. When Goten first began to work at the office, he was extremely quiet and isolated. There was a point in time when he would down right ignore anyone who tried to talk to him. Over time however, he began to become more and more approachable. He never said much, but he at least began to acknowledge other people's existence.

It took awhile for Goten to begin to open up to Lawe, but the man assumed that the only reason he was given the oh so great honor of being able to carry a conversation with him was due to the fact that Goten respected his intelligence. Whenever Goten needed help writing or deconstructing a code, he would specifically ask for Lawe to assist him. Thus, their bond began to deepen, to the point where Goten even divulged to him that he had a girlfriend. How in the world did he ever manage to get one, the man would never know.

Though if he had to guess, it would be due to the fact that most girls were into the mysterious types. He never once spoke of where he had came from, about his family, or his schooling. He often cited that "the past meant little" to him, so in turn he became something of an enigma in the office. There have been dozens of theories floating around the work space. One of his coworkers suggested that Goten was raised by wolves who could speak their language, which would explain why he seemed so cold to other people since he was not used to human interaction. Another asserted that Goten was actually part Saiyan, and that he kept quiet about his heritage so that he wouldn't draw unnecessary attention to himself. Each theory was as ridiculous as the next, but Goten never confirmed nor denied the rumors. Instead, he ignored them completely.

Suddenly, Lawe's wristwatch began to buzz incessantly. It seemed that he had set an alarm on it, for what reason, Goten did not know, but he knew that he would soon find out.

"I almost forgot," Lawe started as he turned off the alarm. "We have a mandatory meeting at the Walter Tech Headquarters in about an hour or so. Doctor Walter himself will be doing a seminar about Ki. He seemed convince that he 'cracked the code' and he wants to share it with us before he shares it with his colleagues."

Now that was interesting. Everything that his father and brother taught him were teachings that were passed down from the perverted turtle hermit himself, who in turn learned from his own master. Maybe whatever it was that Doctor Walter had to say would help him rediscover his own Ki.

At least then he wouldn't have to go out of his way to see that perverted old man.
