Man Of Honor
The incessant buzzing of an antique alarm clock awoke a fair skinned woman from her slumber. She shifted her position within her small humble bed, rolling opposite to where her alarm clock was situated upon her night stand. For the first time in a long time, she had gotten a good night's rest, and she didn't want it to end. Unfortunately, the buzzing became more and more of a nuisance, and with a great mental push, she rolled over toward her night stand and turned off her alarm clock. With a giant sigh she sat up in her bed and wiped the sleep from eyes. She pushed her covers off of her and swung her lithe legs over the side of the bed to read the time. 11:45 AM. The woman generally never slept in for such a long period of time. The quality of her sleep had always been dodgy at best, and it dropped even more after her "situation" started. Her sleep was so bad due to the fact that she was plagued with horrific nightmares that all stemmed from the same source - one faceless man. The man in her nightmares had no face, and he wore no clothes. He was blessed with a chiseled physique, but he'd never advance on her. He'd never try to touch her, to disrobe her. His neither regions gave no sign of thrill or excitement. The man simply stood still as a statue, surrounded by a looming grotesque gray smog - a smog so thick that she could barely breathe. But alas, those were the times before her dreams turned into nightmares. The real nightmares started when he began to whisper her name. "Rebecca...." She thought it was odd that the man called her name, but she reasoned to herself that it was her dreams, so of course anyone in it would know her name. However, there were times where she'd be taking a shower, working up a lather and rinsing her body off with cool water - only to hear the soft whisper of her name. "Rebecca...." The first time it happened, she was so startled that she turned to slam her fist against the shower tile, completely shattering it. At first she thought that perhaps she was crazy - that perhaps she was losing her mind. Voices in dreams shouldn't haunt people when they are outside of them, right? As much as she tried to rationalize it to herself, she couldn't. The voice continued to call her name until she felt as if her mind was on the verge of being broken completely. She reached a point to where she, however crazy as it sounded, needed to confront the man in her dreams. Like clockwork, he appeared before her again, and she attempted to question him. "Who are you!? How do you know my name!?" She sensed the man's hesitation even through the veil of smog. Her beating heart yearned for answers, she yearned for the truth. She tried to visualize the man revealing himself to her - to visualize lifting the curtain of fog between them. Instead, it remained. "Rebecca Rhodes...." The man's hushed voice barely reached her ears. How did he know her name? Who was he? Why didn't he answer any of her questions!? "Stop saying my name and answer me!" She demanded. "I am yours. And you are mine. For now, and forever. So it is now written, and so it shall be." "What!?" Rebecca exclaimed. It was then she realized that this wasn't a dream, that it wasn't just a figment of her imagination. It was a nightmare. A perpetual nightmare that haunted her even as she tried to live out her life. Dejected, Rebecca stomped her foot on the ground in frustration and gingerly made her way through the suspended cloud of fog. However, each step didn't seem to make her closer to him at all. In fact, she seemed to have began to move further and further away from him. "I am your soulmate. You are now bound to me, as I am to you. And understand the blessing I have placed upon your soul. As long as I exist, you Rebecca Rhodes, you shall not perish." After that particular nightmare ended, she was jolted awake and covered in a cold sweat. A mad man had invaded her mind and implanted himself in her dreams. He eerily whispered her name to her, even when he was no where in sight, and he had told her that she was bound to him, as if she was some sort of prized object. How could she explain this to anyone? To tell someone that she was being harassed by a person she didn't know, whose face she couldn't see, yet whose voice she could hear at any moment? She'd be put in the loony bin faster than the Saiyan occupation. However, if what the man said was true, about her being unable to perish, then did that mean that she couldn't die? She had pushed that thought out of her mind as quickly as it had came. She was losing it. What she needed were answers, not more questions. Rebecca had previously searched online for information about beings who could invade other people's minds. Her research found that people could perform alarming feats with the power of their Ki. The only thing that stopped them, aside from rigorous training, was their imagination. This meant that whomever the mysterious figure in her nightmares was, he had the power to transmit his thoughts and desires through vast distances. The power he would need to possess in order to perform such a feat would be nothing less than extraordinary - nothing less than immense. However, fortunately for her it seemed that her tormentor had a life of his own to live since he failed to harass her the previous night. Or, she pondered, what if it was simply the calm before the storm? What if he was cooking up something awful for her the next time they were to meet? She shuddered at the thought. She decided to get on with her day in order to push the vile man to the back of her mind. She had much better things to worry about. Like Walter Tech. Walter Technologies was an innovation company that rose from the ashes of the previous war. Ran by a man named Walter Wheeler, he created a company that specialized in mass producing advanced weaponry, innovative home appliances, and even video games. One such game that the company was concocting was a virtual reality game. The details were scarce at first, and Rebecca honestly didn't care much for video games for she had outgrown them long ago. However, it soon began to surface that the game would be having an open BETA testing soon. It was said that the application process would be extremely fierce and selective, although on the same note there were rumors of people being taken off of the streets and lead to Walter Tech Headquarters so that they could participate in the application process. That rumor seemed to have been in direct contradiction with the one that said that Walter Tech was being selective, but a smart journalist knows that not everything was what it seemed. There must have been an underlying criteria that only the employees at Walter Tech knew of, and those that who have been accepted to be BETA testers knew of as well. Rebecca's theory was that it would have something to do with one's own Ki signature. Why? Because Walter Tech was known for producing weaponry to neutralize Ki users. So what if they were using their intimate knowledge of Ki in order to create a video game exclusively for Ki users? She hoped it was true so that they could help her with her own ailment. |

Man Of Honor
The Walter Tech Headquarters was truly a modern marvel of the world. The building stood over one hundred and ten stories tall and was outfitted with black aluminum and bronze-tinted glass exterior. It would be less accurate to refer to the structure as a building and more or less as a tower or skyscraper. After the war, Walter Wheeler, a former small business owner, had lost everything. He lost his business, his home, and even his family. It was rumored that his wife jumped ship to Avalon with their kids for greener pastures, leaving Walter behind to wallow in his grief. He traveled from city to city to perform odd jobs and make ends meet. However, the more he traveled, the more he began to hear stories of other small business owners who had lost everything just as he had. Inspired by their stories, he took an oath to give each and every person he met a job. To get started on his vision, he took out a loan from a bank that was willing to give him a chance, and from there he began to construct his business. He wanted to have plenty of room for an insurmountable number of workers to join his ranks. Giving a job to those who didn't have one - that was his goal. The planning process for the headquarters was extremely extensive. Walter felt as if he needed over three million square feet of office space for the planned consolidation and predicated that it would perhaps grow steadily and would need room for even more. The building was designed as nine square tubes (each tube being essentially a separate building) clustered in a three-by-three matrix which formed a square base with two-hundred twenty-five foot sides. All of the nine tubes would rise all the way up to the fiftieth floor of the building, where the northwest and southeast tubes ended whilst the remaining seven continued on up. At the sixty-sixth floor, the northeast and southwest tubes end. On the ninetieth floor, the north, east, and south tubes end. The remaining west and center tubes continue up to the one-hundred and eighth floor. Overtime, the building became outfitted with more advanced structural materials to protect its facade from not only harsh weather patterns such as torrential rain, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and tsunamis, but also from random acts of destruction brought on by immensely powerful Ki users. It is said that the building has a shield system that can block any and all Ki techniques from harming it. Whether that is truly accurate or not, no one knows for sure, but no one wished to test it as well. As expected, there were hundreds upon hundreds of BETA testing prospects lining the front entrance. Thankfully, the Walter Tech headquarters had several entrances for the hopefuls to take, making the process run rather smoothly and quickly. As Rebecca approached the main entrance, a security guard ordered her to stand off to the side whilst he used a scanner on his eye to check her for any weaponry. After a brief moment and when the guard received a BLIP! of confirmation, he allowed Rebecca to carry on inside and pointed her towards the direction of the BETA testing screening process. As she made her way to the screening room, two security guards began to carry a disgruntled hopeful out of the headquarters. "This is bullshit! Why can't I be a BETA tester!?" He exclaimed to the guards. The guards held him firmly by his arms and continued to forcefully remove him from the building. "Because the computer said so," One of the guards said. "But why!? Why am I getting kicked out by my friend isn't!?" The man roared, yearning to know why he couldn't join his friend in this once in a lifetime event. "Like he said, because the computer said so," The other guard replied. Rebecca turned her attention back to the screening room and took in a deep breath. She didn't want to have traveled all this way from her humble apartment to the Walter Tech headquarters empty-handed. If the video game was in fact only taking Ki users as BETA testers, then that would cut down the available slots by a significant amount. Rebecca herself was merely an initiate and had a very fundamental working knowledge of Ki. She could use it to make herself lift something that a normal woman could not lift, such as a car or a very large couch. She could also punch a hole in a wall or practically any reinforced surface. However, what she could not do, was fly or hover, or project her Ki energy by transforming it into beams or blasts. Unfortunately for her she had never made that far into her training due to the fact that her master was a bit of a perverted odd-ball and she didn't particularly approve of his training methods. Thus, she left his small island and never returned to expand upon her training. But, now with the recent developments of her being seemingly singled out to be harassed by an exceptionally powerful being, she had kind of wished that she stayed to learn as much as she could from that old hag. Alas, she could not go back to right those wrongs, which was why she wanted to use the resources at Walter Tech to help her find a solution to her problem. She entered the screening room which was nothing more than a large office with numerous individual booths with a computer at each booth. One of the security guards escorted her to her particular booth and she was told that the all she had to do was click the “Okay” button on the monitor with her mouse to begin the survey. After a brief pause, the survey began and her first question was an odd one. Humans can fly without the aid of technology. True or false? Rebecca blinked at the screen. Was this a trick question? She knew of a few of Roshi’s students that could take flight and move swifter than any bird or plane ever could, however, the general public still weren’t fully aware of the fact that certain people could harness their innate Ki energy to fly. She contemplated the answer, but the more she thought about it the more she began to realize that perhaps she was over analyzing the question. If she knew that humans were capable of it then that was all that really mattered. If she picked True, but they deemed her answer wrong, then perhaps she came to the wrong place. He took in a deep breath and clicked the answer choice “True”, and a green check mark appeared on the screen to indicate that she had in fact chosen the correct answer choice. She gave a sigh of relief and continued on with the survey, which began to ask more and more intense questions that involved people using and harnessing their Ki energy. Humans are capable of lifting up a car with relative ease. True or False? Rebecca couldn’t help but grin at the question. This was too perfect. Her theory had been proven – Walter Tech was recruiting BETA testers that were Ki users and were throwing out the rest that weren’t. That meant that she would be able to learn more about the mysterious man in her nightmares and perhaps even ask the scientists at Walter Tech to help her come up with something, or anything, to keep him at bay. |
