The flat screen behind the bar soundlessly relayed the evening's six'o'clock tragedies. A few shootings, a drowned litter of puppies, and another little kid gone missing. This time it was little Avery Johnson. His mother provided a tearful soundbite for the newscasters, a desperate plea for not only her kid's rescue but the other seven who had yet to be ransomed. Hercule knocked back a shot in their honor.

"Shame about those kids," the bartender said the same thing everyone had been saying since the first disappearance. But he had a bar to run, why do something about it right? Why interrupt your daily routine? If you pitied the kids hard enough they would probably just save themselves, they all seemed sure of it.

"Yeah, damn shame," Hercule said with more than a little mockery in his voice.

He flipped a bill onto the counter and walked out to the sidewalk. Could use some fresh air. But it smelled like smoke and piss, so he took to flight, with no particular direction in mind. He could go home and watch some TV, but they'd just be talking about those kids again wouldn't they? Maybe there was a bar playing some sports instead of the news. There definitely was, but he wasn't in the mood for it. Before he really knew where he was going he'd left West City behind and was flying east with the afternoon sun warming his back.

East city's lights twinkled slowly over the horizon, a beckoning oasis to the tired traveler. He flew lower to land. The complex sounds of night life danced vibrantly in his ears; cars, music, crowds, all a welcomed interruption to the hours of wind rushing by. Hercule landed in the center of East City's main street. It was breathtaking. Sky scrapers lined with bright flashing screens on all sides made his skin crawl with anticipation. However with his budget they wouldn't let him through the door. One day he'd be there. They'd roll out the red carpet, he'd get to the top if it killed him.

The night ended in a two story motel with yellowing walls and newspaper for doormats, but the room only ran him 40 zeni a night. He didn't know where to start but that was a problem for the morning.

His phone rang. He rolled over and checked it for the time before he answered; it was nearly an hour before he'd set his alarm. What a cheat.

"Hello," he answered groggily.

"Hey Herc, I ran by your place last night. You out of town?" Sid had been checking up on him lately. It was annoying.

"Yeah, East City. Why were you at my place?"

He didn't get an answer. "What the hell are you doing in East City? I could have booked you solid for this weekend."

Hercule grunted and sat up. What a hassle, waking up to this much nagging. Was this why he never married? "Have you been watching the news?"

"Yeah...don't tell me y-"

"I'm going to find those kids."

"Jeezus Herc, that's what the cops are for."

"And what a fine job they've done, 8 kids missing and no end in sight."

"Well how the hell are you going to show up an entire police force?"

It didn't sound so easy when he put it that way. "I'm still figuring that part out."

"Hold on," Sid told him before putting down the phone. Herc could hear tapping on a keyboard through the line for a minute or so. He took the time to put on some pants and check the mini fridge for something edible, or alcoholic.

"Alright, I'm on my way. Where are you staying?"

"What, why would you come?"

"You're too stupid to do this yourself Herc, I'm sorry but it's true. And I've got an idea that could either get you killed or make you a big damn hero."

A big damn hero huh? Not bad. He couldn't help but smile. "I'm at Le Don on Cape Street."

"Wow, what's that like half a star?"

"Shut up Sid." He hung up and tossed the phone on the bed. The only alcohol in the whole room was a travel bottle of mouthwash. It would have to do for now.
